- Network errors could pollute the buffers because -1 isn't noticed in an
  "unsigned int".
- Remove redundant processing with machine->ssl is NULL.
- Remove compiler warnings about uninitialised 'ctx' (it's not used
  uninitialised, but gcc can't see that).
