Ralf S. Engelschall9cb09691998-12-31 09:36:40 +00006 Changes between 0.9.1c and 0.9.2
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00007
8 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
9 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
10 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
11 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
12 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +000013
14 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
15 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +000016
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +000017 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
18 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
19 [Steve Henson]
20
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +000021 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
22 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
23 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
24 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
25 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
26 (e.g. s_server).
27 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
28 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
29 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
30 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
31 no way to reconfigure them.
32 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
33 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
34 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
35 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
36 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
37 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
38
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +000039 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
40 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
41 recognized by the users.
42 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
43
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +000044 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
45 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
46 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
47 already masked variable.
48 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
49
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +000050 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
51 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
52
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +000053 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
54 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
55 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
56 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
57
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +000058 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
59 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
60 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
61
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +000062 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
63 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
64 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
65 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
66 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
67 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
68 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
69 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
70 now, too.
71 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
72
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +000073 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
74 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
75 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
76
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +000077 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
78 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
79 config file.
80 [Steve Henson]
81
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +000082 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
83 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
84
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +000085 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
86 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
87 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
88 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
89 [Ben Laurie]
90
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +000091 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
92 [Steve Henson]
93
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +000094 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
95 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
96
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +000097 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
98 [Ben Laurie]
99
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +0000100 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
101 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
102 [Steve Henson]
103
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +0000104 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
105 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
106 [Steve Henson]
107
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +0000108 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
109 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
110 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
111 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
112 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
113 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
114 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
115 Ben Laurie]
116
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +0000117 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
118 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
119
120 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
121 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
122 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
123 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
124 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
125
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +0000126 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
127 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +0000128 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +0000129 [Steve Henson]
130
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +0000131 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
132 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for
133 an example.
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +0000134 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +0000135
Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +0000136 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
137 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
138 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
139
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +0000140 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
141 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
142 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
143 build instructions.
144 [Steve Henson]
145
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +0000146 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
147 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
148 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
149 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
150 [Steve Henson]
151
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +0000152 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
153 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
154 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
155 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
156 [Ben Laurie]
157
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +0000158 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
159 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
160 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
161 so it wasn't spotted.
162 [Steve Henson, reported by Erwann ABALEA <eabalea@certplus.com>]
163
Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +0000164 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
165 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
166 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
167 vectors if you have them.
168 [Ben Laurie]
169
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +0000170 *) Correct caclulation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
171 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
172 [Ben Laurie]
173
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +0000174 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
175 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
176 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
177 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
178 If you do a:
179 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
180 it will update them.
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +0000181 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +0000182
Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +0000183 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
184 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
185 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
186 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
187 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
188 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
189 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
190 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
191
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +0000192 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
193 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
194 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
195 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
196 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
197 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
198 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
199 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
200 the crypto/md/ stuff).
201 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
202
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +0000203 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
204 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
205 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
206 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
207 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
208 [Steve Henson]
209
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +0000210 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the
211 INTEGER code.
212 [Steve Henson]
213
Mark J. Cox351d8991999-01-31 12:14:39 +0000214 *) Add new function, EVP_MD_CTX_copy() to replace frequent use of memcpy.
215 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
216
Ralf S. Engelschallb621d771999-01-31 11:10:10 +0000217 *) Make sure `make rehash' target really finds the `openssl' program.
218 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
219
Ben Lauriea96e7811999-01-30 17:53:00 +0000220 *) Squeeze another 7% of speed out of MD5 assembler, at least on a P2. I'd
221 like to hear about it if this slows down other processors.
222 [Ben Laurie]
223
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +0000224 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.
225 [Alan Batie <batie@aahz.jf.intel.com>]
226
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +0000227 *) Fixed ms/32all.bat script: `no_asm' -> `no-asm'
228 [Rainer W. Gerling <gerling@mpg-gv.mpg.de>]
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +0000229
230 *) New program nseq to manipulate netscape certificate sequences
231 [Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +0000232
Dr. Stephen Henson9fe84291999-01-29 01:53:55 +0000233 *) Modify crl2pkcs7 so it supports multiple -certfile arguments. Fix a
234 few typos.
235 [Steve Henson]
236
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +0000237 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION
238 but the BN code had some problems that would cause failures when
239 doing certificate verification and some other functions.
240 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
241
Dr. Stephen Henson92c046c1999-01-28 00:16:44 +0000242 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
243 [Steve Henson]
244
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +0000245 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
246 [Steve Henson]
247
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +0000248 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
249 [Steve Henson]
250
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +0000251 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
252 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
253 [Steve Henson]
254
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +0000255 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
256 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
257 CA extensions.
258 [Steve Henson]
259
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +0000260 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the
261 error code, add initial support to X509_print() and x509 application.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +0000262 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +0000263
Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +0000264 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
265 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
266 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
267 [Steve Henson]
268
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +0000269 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
270 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
271 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
272 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
273 properly to be processed.
274 [Steve Henson]
275
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +0000276 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
277 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
278 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
279 [Ben Laurie]
280
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +0000281 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.
282 [Ben Laurie, reported by Jeremy Hylton <jeremy@cnri.reston.va.us>]
283
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +0000284 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
285 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
286 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
287 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
288 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
289 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
290 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
291 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
292 or delete all the .err files.
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +0000293 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +0000294
Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +0000295 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
296 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
297 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
298 to regenerate it if needed.
299 [Ben Laurie, reported (with fix for C version) by Jun-ichiro itojun
300 Hagino <itojun@kame.net>]
301
302 *) File was opened incorrectly in randfile.c.
303 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
304
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +0000305 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
306 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
307 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
308 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
309 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
310 [Steve Henson]
311
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +0000312 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.
313 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
314
Ben Laurie512d2221999-01-17 14:14:41 +0000315 *) Remove pointless MD5 hash when using DSA keys in ca.
316 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
317
Ben Laurie2c1ef381999-01-17 14:10:08 +0000318 *) Generate an error if given an empty string as a cert directory. Also
319 generate an error if handed NULL (previously returned 0 to indicate an
320 error, but didn't set one).
321 [Ben Laurie, reported by Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
322
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +0000323 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
324 [Ben Laurie]
325
Dr. Stephen Hensonee13f9b1999-01-14 18:25:07 +0000326 *) Fix the dummy function BN_ref_mod_exp() in rsaref.c to have the correct
327 parameters. This was causing a warning which killed off the Win32 compile.
328 [Steve Henson]
329
Dr. Stephen Henson27eb6221999-01-14 18:21:57 +0000330 *) Remove C++ style comments from crypto/bn/bn_local.h.
331 [Neil Costigan <neil.costigan@celocom.com>]
332
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +0000333 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
334 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
335 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
336 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
337 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
338 OID is not part of the table.
