Ralf S. Engelschall651d0af1998-12-22 15:04:48 +00003 _______________
4
Ralf S. Engelschalld91e2011999-08-09 11:14:08 +00005 Changes between 0.9.4 and 0.9.5 [xx XXX 1999]
6
Mark J. Coxb7cfcfb1999-11-15 16:31:31 +00007 *) Correctly increment the reference count in the SSL_SESSION pointer
8 returned from SSL_get_session().
9 [Geoff Thorpe <geoff@eu.c2.net>]
10
Dr. Stephen Henson06556a11999-11-14 23:10:50 +000011 *) Fix for 'req': it was adding a null to request attributes.
12 Also change the X509_LOOKUP and X509_INFO code to handle
13 certificate auxiliary information.
14 [Steve Henson]
15
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +000016 *) Add support for 40 and 64 bit RC2 and RC4 algorithms: document
17 the 'enc' command.
18 [Steve Henson]
19
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +000020 *) Add the possibility to add extra information to the memory leak
21 detecting output, to form tracebacks, showing from where each
22 allocation was originated. Also updated sid code to be multi-
23 thread-safe.
24 [Richard Levitte]
25
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +000026 *) Add options -text and -noout to pkcs7 utility and delete the
Dr. Stephen Henson954ef7e1999-11-12 01:42:25 +000027 encryption options which never did anything. Update docs.
28 [Steve Henson]
29
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf298111999-11-11 18:41:31 +000030 *) Add options to some of the utilities to allow the pass phrase
31 to be included on either the command line (not recommended on
32 OSes like Unix) or read from the environment. Update the
33 manpages and fix a few bugs.
34 [Steve Henson]
35
Dr. Stephen Hensonaba3e651999-11-10 02:52:17 +000036 *) Add a few manpages for some of the openssl commands.
37 [Steve Henson]
38
Dr. Stephen Hensona0ad17b1999-11-08 13:58:08 +000039 *) Fix the -revoke option in ca. It was freeing up memory twice,
40 leaking and not finding already revoked certificates.
41 [Steve Henson]
42
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +000043 *) Extensive changes to support certificate auxiliary information.
44 This involves the use of X509_CERT_AUX structure and X509_AUX
45 functions. An X509_AUX function such as PEM_read_X509_AUX()
46 can still read in a certificate file in the usual way but it
47 will also read in any additional "auxiliary information". By
48 doing things this way a fair degree of compatability can be
49 retained: existing certificates can have this information added
50 using the new 'x509' options.
51
52 Current auxiliary information includes an "alias" and some trust
53 settings. The trust settings will ultimately be used in enhanced
54 certificate chain verification routines: currently a certificate
55 can only be trusted if it is self signed and then it is trusted
56 for all purposes.
57 [Steve Henson]
58
Mark J. Coxce2c95b1999-11-03 14:10:10 +000059 *) Fix assembler for Alpha (tested only on DEC OSF not Linux or *BSD). The
60 problem was that one of the replacement routines had not been working since
61 SSLeay releases. For now the offending routine has been replaced with
62 non-optimised assembler. Even so, this now gives around 95% performance
63 improvement for 1024 bit RSA signs.
64 [Mark Cox]
65
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +000066 *) Hack to fix PKCS#7 decryption when used with some unorthodox RC2
67 handling. Most clients have the effective key size in bits equal to
68 the key length in bits: so a 40 bit RC2 key uses a 40 bit (5 byte) key.
69 A few however don't do this and instead use the size of the decrypted key
70 to determine the RC2 key length and the AlgorithmIdentifier to determine
71 the effective key length. In this case the effective key lenth can still
72 be 40 bits but the key length can be 168 bits for example. This is fixed
73 by manually forcing an RC2 key into the EVP_PKEY structure because the
74 EVP code can't currently handle unusual RC2 key sizes: it always assumes
75 the key length and effective key length are equal.
76 [Steve Henson]
77
Dr. Stephen Henson74400f71999-10-27 00:15:11 +000078 *) Add a bunch of functions that should simplify the creation of
79 X509_NAME structures. Now you should be able to do:
80 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, "CN", MBSTRING_ASC, "Steve", -1, -1, 0);
81 and have it automatically work out the correct field type and fill in
82 the structures. The more adventurous can try:
83 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, field, MBSTRING_UTF8, str, -1, -1, 0);
84 and it will (hopefully) work out the correct multibyte encoding.
85 [Steve Henson]
86
87 *) Change the 'req' utility to use the new field handling and multibyte
88 copy routines. Before the DN field creation was handled in an ad hoc
89 way in req, ca, and x509 which was rather broken and didn't support
90 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings. Since some software doesn't implement
91 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings yet, they can be enabled using the config file
92 using the dirstring_type option. See the new comment in the default
93 openssl.cnf for more info.
94 [Steve Henson]
95
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +000096 *) Make crypto/rand/md_rand.c more robust:
Bodo Möller62ac2931999-10-26 16:26:48 +000097 - Assure unique random numbers after fork().
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +000098 - Make sure that concurrent threads access the global counter and
99 md serializably so that we never lose entropy in them
100 or use exactly the same state in multiple threads.
101 Access to the large state is not always serializable because
102 the additional locking could be a performance killer, and
103 md should be large enough anyway.
104 [Bodo Moeller]
105
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000106 *) New file apps/app_rand.c with commonly needed functionality
107 for handling the random seed file.
108
109 Use the random seed file in some applications that previously did not:
110 ca,
111 dsaparam -genkey (which also ignored its `-rand' option),
112 s_client,
113 s_server,
114 x509 (when signing).
115 Except on systems with /dev/urandom, it is crucial to have a random
116 seed file at least for key creation, DSA signing, and for DH exchanges;
Bodo Möller99e87561999-10-26 11:19:42 +0000117 for RSA signatures we could do without one.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000118
119 gendh and gendsa (unlike genrsa) used to read only the first byte
120 of each file listed in the `-rand' option. The function as previously
121 found in genrsa is now in app_rand.c and is used by all programs
122 that support `-rand'.
123 [Bodo Moeller]
124
125 *) In RAND_write_file, use mode 0600 for creating files;
126 don't just chmod when it may be too late.
127 [Bodo Moeller]
128
129 *) Report an error from X509_STORE_load_locations
130 when X509_LOOKUP_load_file or X509_LOOKUP_add_dir failed.
131 [Bill Perry]
132
Dr. Stephen Henson462f79e1999-10-21 13:20:49 +0000133 *) New function ASN1_mbstring_copy() this copies a string in either
134 ASCII, Unicode, Universal (4 bytes per character) or UTF8 format
135 into an ASN1_STRING type. A mask of permissible types is passed
136 and it chooses the "minimal" type to use or an error if not type
137 is suitable.
138 [Steve Henson]
139
Dr. Stephen Henson08e9c1a1999-10-20 01:50:23 +0000140 *) Add function equivalents to the various macros in asn1.h. The old
141 macros are retained with an M_ prefix. Code inside the library can
142 use the M_ macros. External code (including the openssl utility)
143 should *NOT* in order to be "shared library friendly".
144 [Steve Henson]
145
Dr. Stephen Henson673b1021999-10-13 01:11:56 +0000146 *) Add various functions that can check a certificate's extensions
147 to see if it usable for various purposes such as SSL client,
148 server or S/MIME and CAs of these types. This is currently
149 VERY EXPERIMENTAL but will ultimately be used for certificate chain
150 verification. Also added a -purpose flag to x509 utility to
151 print out all the purposes.
152 [Steve Henson]
153
Dr. Stephen Henson56a3fec1999-10-11 01:30:04 +0000154 *) Add a CRYPTO_EX_DATA to X509 certificate structure and associated
155 functions.
156 [Steve Henson]
157
Dr. Stephen Henson4654ef91999-10-09 02:54:10 +0000158 *) New X509V3_{X509,CRL,REVOKED}_get_d2i() functions. These will search
159 for, obtain and decode and extension and obtain its critical flag.
160 This allows all the necessary extension code to be handled in a
161 single function call.
162 [Steve Henson]
163
Andy Polyakov7e102e21999-10-07 12:10:26 +0000164 *) RC4 tune-up featuring 30-40% performance improvement on most RISC
165 platforms. See crypto/rc4/rc4_enc.c for further details.
166 [Andy Polyakov]
167
Dr. Stephen Hensond71c6bc1999-10-05 13:10:21 +0000168 *) New -noout option to asn1parse. This causes no output to be produced
169 its main use is when combined with -strparse and -out to extract data
170 from a file (which may not be in ASN.1 format).
171 [Steve Henson]
172
Dr. Stephen Henson2d681b71999-10-05 12:57:50 +0000173 *) Fix for pkcs12 program. It was hashing an invalid certificate pointer
174 when producing the local key id.
175 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
176
Dr. Stephen Henson3908cdf1999-10-04 23:56:06 +0000177 *) New option -dhparam in s_server. This allows a DH parameter file to be
178 stated explicitly. If it is not stated then it tries the first server
179 certificate file. The previous behaviour hard coded the filename
180 "server.pem".
181 [Steve Henson]
182
Dr. Stephen Henson3ea23631999-10-04 21:17:47 +0000183 *) Add -pubin and -pubout options to the rsa and dsa commands. These allow
184 a public key to be input or output. For example:
185 openssl rsa -in key.pem -pubout -out pubkey.pem
186 Also added necessary DSA public key functions to handle this.
187 [Steve Henson]
188
Dr. Stephen Henson393f2c61999-10-04 12:08:59 +0000189 *) Fix so PKCS7_dataVerify() doesn't crash if no certificates are contained
190 in the message. This was handled by allowing
191 X509_find_by_issuer_and_serial() to tolerate a NULL passed to it.
192 [Steve Henson, reported by Sampo Kellomaki <sampo@mail.neuronio.pt>]
193
194 *) Fix for bug in d2i_ASN1_bytes(): other ASN1 functions add an extra null
195 to the end of the strings whereas this didn't. This would cause problems
196 if strings read with d2i_ASN1_bytes() were later modified.
197 [Steve Henson, reported by Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
198
Dr. Stephen Henson4579dd51999-10-02 13:33:06 +0000199 *) Fix for base64 decode bug. When a base64 bio reads only one line of
200 data and it contains EOF it will end up returning an error. This is
201 caused by input 46 bytes long. The cause is due to the way base64
202 BIOs find the start of base64 encoded data. They do this by trying a
203 trial decode on each line until they find one that works. When they
204 do a flag is set and it starts again knowing it can pass all the
205 data directly through the decoder. Unfortunately it doesn't reset
206 the context it uses. This means that if EOF is reached an attempt
207 is made to pass two EOFs through the context and this causes the
208 resulting error. This can also cause other problems as well. As is
209 usual with these problems it takes *ages* to find and the fix is
210 trivial: move one line.
211 [Steve Henson, reported by ian@uns.ns.ac.yu (Ivan Nejgebauer) ]
212
Dr. Stephen Henson06f45361999-09-20 22:09:17 +0000213 *) Ugly workaround to get s_client and s_server working under Windows. The
214 old code wouldn't work because it needed to select() on sockets and the
215 tty (for keypresses and to see if data could be written). Win32 only
216 supports select() on sockets so we select() with a 1s timeout on the
217 sockets and then see if any characters are waiting to be read, if none
218 are present then we retry, we also assume we can always write data to
219 the tty. This isn't nice because the code then blocks until we've
220 received a complete line of data and it is effectively polling the
221 keyboard at 1s intervals: however it's quite a bit better than not
222 working at all :-) A dedicated Windows application might handle this
223 with an event loop for example.
224 [Steve Henson]
225
Dr. Stephen Henson1c800191999-09-18 22:37:44 +0000226 *) Enhance RSA_METHOD structure. Now there are two extra methods, rsa_sign
227 and rsa_verify. When the RSA_FLAGS_SIGN_VER option is set these functions
228 will be called when RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() are used. This is useful
229 if rsa_pub_dec() and rsa_priv_enc() equivalents are not available.
230 For this to work properly RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt()
231 should *not* be used: RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() must be used instead.
232 This necessitated the support of an extra signature type NID_md5_sha1
233 for SSL signatures and modifications to the SSL library to use it instead
234 of calling RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt().
235 [Steve Henson]
236
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +0000237 *) Add new -verify -CAfile and -CApath options to the crl program, these
238 will lookup a CRL issuers certificate and verify the signature in a
239 similar way to the verify program. Tidy up the crl program so it
240 no longer acesses structures directly. Make the ASN1 CRL parsing a bit
241 less strict. It will now permit CRL extensions even if it is not
242 a V2 CRL: this will allow it to tolerate some broken CRLs.
243 [Steve Henson]
244
Bodo Möller396f6311999-09-08 21:58:13 +0000245 *) Initialize all non-automatic variables each time one of the openssl
246 sub-programs is started (this is necessary as they may be started
247 multiple times from the "OpenSSL>" prompt).
248 [Lennart Bang, Bodo Moeller]
249
Dr. Stephen Henson4a61a641999-09-08 18:02:25 +0000250 *) Preliminary compilation option RSA_NULL which disables RSA crypto without
251 removing all other RSA functionality (this is what NO_RSA does). This
252 is so (for example) those in the US can disable those operations covered
253 by the RSA patent while allowing storage and parsing of RSA keys and RSA
254 key generation.
255 [Steve Henson]
256
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +0000257 *) Non-copying interface to BIO pairs.
Bodo Möller6f7af151999-09-10 14:03:21 +0000258 (still largely untested)
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +0000259 [Bodo Moeller]
260
Dr. Stephen Hensona785abc1999-09-07 12:16:29 +0000261 *) New function ANS1_tag2str() to convert an ASN1 tag to a descriptive
262 ASCII string. This was handled independently in various places before.
263 [Steve Henson]
264
Dr. Stephen Hensonaef838f1999-09-04 17:19:55 +0000265 *) New functions UTF8_getc() and UTF8_putc() that parse and generate
266 UTF8 strings a character at a time.
267 [Steve Henson]
268
Bodo Möller074309b1999-09-03 16:33:11 +0000269 *) Use client_version from client hello to select the protocol
270 (s23_srvr.c) and for RSA client key exchange verification
271 (s3_srvr.c), as required by the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 specifications.
272 [Bodo Moeller]
273
Dr. Stephen Henson8ce97161999-09-03 01:08:34 +0000274 *) Add various utility functions to handle SPKACs, these were previously
275 handled by poking round in the structure internals. Added new function
276 NETSCAPE_SPKI_print() to print out SPKAC and a new utility 'spkac' to
277 print, verify and generate SPKACs. Based on an original idea from
278 Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@comune.modena.it> but extensively modified.
279 [Steve Henson]
280
Andy Polyakov2d4287d1999-08-28 13:18:25 +0000281 *) RIPEMD160 is operational on all platforms and is back in 'make test'.
282 [Andy Polyakov]
283
Dr. Stephen Henson87a25f91999-08-27 00:08:17 +0000284 *) Allow the config file extension section to be overwritten on the
285 command line. Based on an original idea from Massimiliano Pala
286 <madwolf@comune.modena.it>. The new option is called -extensions
287 and can be applied to ca, req and x509. Also -reqexts to override
288 the request extensions in req and -crlexts to override the crl extensions
289 in ca.
290 [Steve Henson]
291
Dr. Stephen Hensonf9150e51999-08-25 23:18:23 +0000292 *) Add new feature to the SPKAC handling in ca. Now you can include
293 the same field multiple times by preceding it by "XXXX." for example:
294 1.OU="Unit name 1"
295 2.OU="Unit name 2"
296 this is the same syntax as used in the req config file.
297 [Steve Henson]
298
Dr. Stephen Hensonc79b16e1999-08-25 16:59:26 +0000299 *) Allow certificate extensions to be added to certificate requests. These
300 are specified in a 'req_extensions' option of the req section of the
301 config file. They can be printed out with the -text option to req but
302 are otherwise ignored at present.
303 [Steve Henson]
304
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000305 *) Fix a horrible bug in enc_read() in crypto/evp/bio_enc.c: if the first
Bodo Möller0f7e6fe1999-09-24 20:24:24 +0000306 data read consists of only the final block it would not decrypted because
Dr. Stephen Henson7b65c321999-08-24 13:21:35 +0000307 EVP_CipherUpdate() would correctly report zero bytes had been decrypted.
308 A misplaced 'break' also meant the decrypted final block might not be
309 copied until the next read.
310 [Steve Henson]
311
Dr. Stephen Henson13066ce1999-08-23 23:11:32 +0000312 *) Initial support for DH_METHOD. Again based on RSA_METHOD. Also added
313 a few extra parameters to the DH structure: these will be useful if
314 for example we want the value of 'q' or implement X9.42 DH.
315 [Steve Henson]
316
Dr. Stephen Hensonc0711f71999-08-22 17:57:38 +0000317 *) Initial support for DSA_METHOD. This is based on the RSA_METHOD and
318 provides hooks that allow the default DSA functions or functions on a
319 "per key" basis to be replaced. This allows hardware acceleration and
320 hardware key storage to be handled without major modification to the
321 library. Also added low level modexp hooks and CRYPTO_EX structure and
322 associated functions.
323 [Steve Henson]
324
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +0000325 *) Add a new flag to memory BIOs, BIO_FLAG_MEM_RDONLY. This marks the BIO
326 as "read only": it can't be written to and the buffer it points to will
327 not be freed. Reading from a read only BIO is much more efficient than
328 a normal memory BIO. This was added because there are several times when
329 an area of memory needs to be read from a BIO. The previous method was
330 to create a memory BIO and write the data to it, this results in two
331 copies of the data and an O(n^2) reading algorithm. There is a new
332 function BIO_new_mem_buf() which creates a read only memory BIO from
333 an area of memory. Also modified the PKCS#7 routines to use read only
334 memory BIOSs.
335 [Steve Henson]
336
Bodo Möllerde1915e1999-08-18 17:14:42 +0000337 *) Bugfix: ssl23_get_client_hello did not work properly when called in
338 state SSL23_ST_SR_CLNT_HELLO_B, i.e. when the first 7 bytes of
339 a SSLv2-compatible client hello for SSLv3 or TLSv1 could be read,
340 but a retry condition occured while trying to read the rest.
341 [Bodo Moeller]
342
Dr. Stephen Hensonc6c34501999-08-17 12:58:01 +0000343 *) The PKCS7_ENC_CONTENT_new() function was setting the content type as
344 NID_pkcs7_encrypted by default: this was wrong since this should almost
345 always be NID_pkcs7_data. Also modified the PKCS7_set_type() to handle
346 the encrypted data type: this is a more sensible place to put it and it
347 allows the PKCS#12 code to be tidied up that duplicated this
348 functionality.
349 [Steve Henson]
350
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +0000351 *) Changed obj_dat.pl script so it takes its input and output files on
352 the command line. This should avoid shell escape redirection problems
353 under Win32.
354 [Steve Henson]
355
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +0000356 *) Initial support for certificate extension requests, these are included
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +0000357 in things like Xenroll certificate requests. Included functions to allow
358 extensions to be obtained and added.
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +0000359 [Steve Henson]
360
Bodo Möller1b1a6e71999-08-09 13:01:48 +0000361 *) -crlf option to s_client and s_server for sending newlines as
362 CRLF (as required by many protocols).
363 [Bodo Moeller]
364
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +0000365 Changes between 0.9.3a and 0.9.4 [09 Aug 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +0000366
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +0000367 *) Install libRSAglue.a when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +0000368 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000369
Ralf S. Engelschall96395151999-08-08 10:15:43 +0000370 *) A few more ``#ifndef NO_FP_API / #endif'' pairs for consistency.
371 [Andrija Antonijevic <TheAntony2@bigfoot.com>]
372
Dr. Stephen Hensoned7f60f1999-08-06 21:47:09 +0000373 *) Fix -startdate and -enddate (which was missing) arguments to 'ca'
374 program.
375 [Steve Henson]
376
Bodo Möller48c843c1999-08-05 11:50:18 +0000377 *) New function DSA_dup_DH, which duplicates DSA parameters/keys as
378 DH parameters/keys (q is lost during that conversion, but the resulting
379 DH parameters contain its length).
380
381 For 1024-bit p, DSA_generate_parameters followed by DSA_dup_DH is
382 much faster than DH_generate_parameters (which creates parameters
383 where p = 2*q + 1), and also the smaller q makes DH computations
384 much more efficient (160-bit exponentiation instead of 1024-bit
385 exponentiation); so this provides a convenient way to support DHE
386 ciphersuites in SSL/TLS servers (see ssl/ssltest.c). It is of
387 utter importance to use
388 SSL_CTX_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
389 or
390 SSL_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
391 when such DH parameters are used, because otherwise small subgroup
392 attacks may become possible!
393 [Bodo Moeller]
394
395 *) Avoid memory leak in i2d_DHparams.
396 [Bodo Moeller]
397
Dr. Stephen Henson922180d1999-07-30 01:12:46 +0000398 *) Allow the -k option to be used more than once in the enc program:
399 this allows the same encrypted message to be read by multiple recipients.
400 [Steve Henson]
401
Dr. Stephen Henson3e3d2ea1999-07-27 22:22:58 +0000402 *) New function OBJ_obj2txt(buf, buf_len, a, no_name), this converts
403 an ASN1_OBJECT to a text string. If the "no_name" parameter is set then
404 it will always use the numerical form of the OID, even if it has a short
405 or long name.
406 [Steve Henson]
407
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +0000408 *) Added an extra RSA flag: RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY. Previously the rsa_mod_exp
409 method only got called if p,q,dmp1,dmq1,iqmp components were present,
410 otherwise bn_mod_exp was called. In the case of hardware keys for example
411 no private key components need be present and it might store extra data
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000412 in the RSA structure, which cannot be accessed from bn_mod_exp.
413 By setting RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY rsa_mod_exp will always be called for
414 private key operations.
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +0000415 [Steve Henson]
416
Andy Polyakova0618e31999-07-25 15:13:49 +0000417 *) Added support for SPARC Linux.
418 [Andy Polyakov]
419
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000420 *) pem_password_cb function type incompatibly changed from
421 typedef int pem_password_cb(char *buf, int size, int rwflag);
422 to
423 ....(char *buf, int size, int rwflag, void *userdata);
424 so that applications can pass data to their callbacks:
425 The PEM[_ASN1]_{read,write}... functions and macros now take an
426 additional void * argument, which is just handed through whenever
427 the password callback is called.
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000428 [Damien Miller <dmiller@ilogic.com.au>; tiny changes by Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000429
430 New function SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata.
431
432 Compatibility note: As many C implementations push function arguments
433 onto the stack in reverse order, the new library version is likely to
434 interoperate with programs that have been compiled with the old
435 pem_password_cb definition (PEM_whatever takes some data that
436 happens to be on the stack as its last argument, and the callback
437 just ignores this garbage); but there is no guarantee whatsoever that
438 this will work.
Bodo Möller0cceb1c1999-05-30 23:54:52 +0000439
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +0000440 *) The -DPLATFORM="\"$(PLATFORM)\"" definition and the similar -DCFLAGS=...
441 (both in crypto/Makefile.ssl for use by crypto/cversion.c) caused
442 problems not only on Windows, but also on some Unix platforms.
Bodo Möller2e0fc871999-07-27 09:10:36 +0000443 To avoid problematic command lines, these definitions are now in an
Bodo Möller57119941999-07-29 12:57:23 +0000444 auto-generated file crypto/buildinf.h (created by crypto/Makefile.ssl
445 for standard "make" builds, by util/mk1mf.pl for "mk1mf" builds).
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +0000446 [Bodo Moeller]
447
Andy Polyakov73634551999-07-20 15:50:20 +0000448 *) MIPS III/IV assembler module is reimplemented.
449 [Andy Polyakov]
450
Ulf Möller64344501999-07-16 00:50:45 +0000451 *) More DES library cleanups: remove references to srand/rand and
452 delete an unused file.
453 [Ulf Möller]
454
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +0000455 *) Add support for the the free Netwide assembler (NASM) under Win32,
456 since not many people have MASM (ml) and it can be hard to obtain.
457 This is currently experimental but it seems to work OK and pass all
458 the tests. Check out INSTALL.W32 for info.
459 [Steve Henson]
460
Bodo Möller50596581999-07-12 17:15:42 +0000461 *) Fix memory leaks in s3_clnt.c: All non-anonymous SSL3/TLS1 connections
462 without temporary keys kept an extra copy of the server key,
463 and connections with temporary keys did not free everything in case
464 of an error.
465 [Bodo Moeller]
466
Bodo Möller03cd4941999-07-11 22:00:55 +0000467 *) New function RSA_check_key and new openssl rsa option -check
468 for verifying the consistency of RSA keys.
469 [Ulf Moeller, Bodo Moeller]
470
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +0000471 *) Various changes to make Win32 compile work:
472 1. Casts to avoid "loss of data" warnings in p5_crpt2.c
473 2. Change unsigned int to int in b_dump.c to avoid "signed/unsigned
474 comparison" warnings.
475 3. Add sk_<TYPE>_sort to DEF file generator and do make update.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +0000476 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +0000477
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5139391999-07-11 12:40:46 +0000478 *) Add a debugging option to PKCS#5 v2 key generation function: when
479 you #define DEBUG_PKCS5V2 passwords, salts, iteration counts and
480 derived keys are printed to stderr.
481 [Steve Henson]
482
Dr. Stephen Henson0ab8beb1999-07-11 12:30:55 +0000483 *) Copy the flags in ASN1_STRING_dup().
484 [Roman E. Pavlov <pre@mo.msk.ru>]
485
Dr. Stephen Hensonf7daafa1999-07-11 01:48:21 +0000486 *) The x509 application mishandled signing requests containing DSA
487 keys when the signing key was also DSA and the parameters didn't match.
488
489 It was supposed to omit the parameters when they matched the signing key:
490 the verifying software was then supposed to automatically use the CA's
491 parameters if they were absent from the end user certificate.
492
493 Omitting parameters is no longer recommended. The test was also
494 the wrong way round! This was probably due to unusual behaviour in
495 EVP_cmp_parameters() which returns 1 if the parameters match.
496 This meant that parameters were omitted when they *didn't* match and
497 the certificate was useless. Certificates signed with 'ca' didn't have
498 this bug.
499 [Steve Henson, reported by Doug Erickson <Doug.Erickson@Part.NET>]
500
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +0000501 *) Memory leak checking (-DCRYPTO_MDEBUG) had some problems.
502 The interface is as follows:
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +0000503 Applications can use
504 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ON) aka MemCheck_start(),
505 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_OFF) aka MemCheck_stop();
506 "off" is now the default.
507 The library internally uses
508 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_DISABLE) aka MemCheck_off(),
509 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ENABLE) aka MemCheck_on()
510 to disable memory-checking temporarily.
511
512 Some inconsistent states that previously were possible (and were
513 even the default) are now avoided.
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +0000514
515 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_TIME is new and additionally stores the current time
516 with each memory chunk allocated; this is occasionally more helpful
517 than just having a counter.
Bodo Möllere3911161999-07-19 10:36:10 +0000518
519 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_THREAD is also new and adds the thread ID.
520
521 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_ALL enables all of the above, plus any future
522 extensions.
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +0000523 [Bodo Moeller]
524
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +0000525 *) Introduce "mode" for SSL structures (with defaults in SSL_CTX),
526 which largely parallels "options", but is for changing API behaviour,
527 whereas "options" are about protocol behaviour.
Bodo Möller9c962481999-07-19 12:59:12 +0000528 Initial "mode" flags are:
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +0000529
530 SSL_MODE_ENABLE_PARTIAL_WRITE Allow SSL_write to report success when
531 a single record has been written.
532 SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER Don't insist that SSL_write
533 retries use the same buffer location.
534 (But all of the contents must be
535 copied!)
536 [Bodo Moeller]
537
538 *) Bugfix: SSL_set_mode ignored its parameter, only SSL_CTX_set_mode
539 worked.
540
Ulf Möller5271ebd1999-06-30 00:42:56 +0000541 *) Fix problems with no-hmac etc.
542 [Ulf Möller, pointed out by Brian Wellington <bwelling@tislabs.com>]
543
Dr. Stephen Hensonce8b2571999-06-29 22:22:42 +0000544 *) New functions RSA_get_default_method(), RSA_set_method() and
545 RSA_get_method(). These allows replacement of RSA_METHODs without having
546 to mess around with the internals of an RSA structure.
547 [Steve Henson]
548
Bodo Möller9c729e01999-06-25 14:04:10 +0000549 *) Fix memory leaks in DSA_do_sign and DSA_is_prime.
550 Also really enable memory leak checks in openssl.c and in some
551 test programs.
552 [Chad C. Mulligan, Bodo Moeller]
553
Dr. Stephen Henson034292a1999-06-24 01:50:27 +0000554 *) Fix a bug in d2i_ASN1_INTEGER() and i2d_ASN1_INTEGER() which can mess
555 up the length of negative integers. This has now been simplified to just
556 store the length when it is first determined and use it later, rather
557 than trying to keep track of where data is copied and updating it to
558 point to the end.
559 [Steve Henson, reported by Brien Wheeler
560 <bwheeler@authentica-security.com>]
561
Dr. Stephen Henson170afce1999-06-22 13:33:22 +0000562 *) Add a new function PKCS7_signatureVerify. This allows the verification
563 of a PKCS#7 signature but with the signing certificate passed to the
564 function itself. This contrasts with PKCS7_dataVerify which assumes the
565 certificate is present in the PKCS#7 structure. This isn't always the
566 case: certificates can be omitted from a PKCS#7 structure and be
567 distributed by "out of band" means (such as a certificate database).
568 [Steve Henson]
569
Dr. Stephen Hensondbd665c1999-06-22 01:38:31 +0000570 *) Complete the PEM_* macros with DECLARE_PEM versions to replace the
571 function prototypes in pem.h, also change util/mkdef.pl to add the
572 necessary function names.
573 [Steve Henson]
574
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +0000575 *) mk1mf.pl (used by Windows builds) did not properly read the
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +0000576 options set by Configure in the top level Makefile, and Configure
Bodo Möller975d3dc1999-07-09 13:02:14 +0000577 was not even able to write more than one option correctly.
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +0000578 Fixed, now "no-idea no-rc5 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG" etc. works as intended.
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +0000579 [Bodo Moeller]
580
Dr. Stephen Henson8623f691999-06-20 17:36:11 +0000581 *) New functions CONF_load_bio() and CONF_load_fp() to allow a config
582 file to be loaded from a BIO or FILE pointer. The BIO version will
583 for example allow memory BIOs to contain config info.
584 [Steve Henson]
585
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +0000586 *) New function "CRYPTO_num_locks" that returns CRYPTO_NUM_LOCKS.
587 Whoever hopes to achieve shared-library compatibility across versions
588 must use this, not the compile-time macro.
Bodo Möller11af1a21999-06-18 18:22:38 +0000589 (Exercise 0.9.4: Which is the minimum library version required by
590 such programs?)
591 Note: All this applies only to multi-threaded programs, others don't
592 need locks.
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +0000593 [Bodo Moeller]
594
Bodo Möller95d29591999-06-12 01:03:40 +0000595 *) Add missing case to s3_clnt.c state machine -- one of the new SSL tests
596 through a BIO pair triggered the default case, i.e.
597 SSLerr(...,SSL_R_UNKNOWN_STATE).
598 [Bodo Moeller]
599
600 *) New "BIO pair" concept (crypto/bio/bss_bio.c) so that applications
601 can use the SSL library even if none of the specific BIOs is
602 appropriate.
603 [Bodo Moeller]
604
Dr. Stephen Henson9bce3071999-06-11 22:30:45 +0000605 *) Fix a bug in i2d_DSAPublicKey() which meant it returned the wrong value
606 for the encoded length.
607 [Jeon KyoungHo <khjeon@sds.samsung.co.kr>]
608
Dr. Stephen Henson565d1061999-06-11 01:58:42 +0000609 *) Add initial documentation of the X509V3 functions.
610 [Steve Henson]
611
Dr. Stephen Hensonb7d135b1999-06-10 17:32:52 +0000612 *) Add a new pair of functions PEM_write_PKCS8PrivateKey() and
613 PEM_write_bio_PKCS8PrivateKey() that are equivalent to
614 PEM_write_PrivateKey() and PEM_write_bio_PrivateKey() but use the more
615 secure PKCS#8 private key format with a high iteration count.
616 [Steve Henson]
617
Ralf S. Engelschall9d9b5591999-06-10 08:13:52 +0000618 *) Fix determination of Perl interpreter: A perl or perl5
619 _directory_ in $PATH was also accepted as the interpreter.
620 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
621
Dr. Stephen Henson5f6d0ea1999-06-09 23:33:48 +0000622 *) Fix demos/sign/sign.c: well there wasn't anything strictly speaking
623 wrong with it but it was very old and did things like calling
624 PEM_ASN1_read() directly and used MD5 for the hash not to mention some
625 unusual formatting.
626 [Steve Henson]
627
Dr. Stephen Hensonf62676b1999-06-09 18:05:30 +0000628 *) Fix demos/selfsign.c: it used obsolete and deleted functions, changed
629 to use the new extension code.
630 [Steve Henson]
631
632 *) Implement the PEM_read/PEM_write functions in crypto/pem/pem_all.c
633 with macros. This should make it easier to change their form, add extra
634 arguments etc. Fix a few PEM prototypes which didn't have cipher as a
635 constant.
636 [Steve Henson]
637
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +0000638 *) Add to configuration table a new entry that can specify an alternative
639 name for unistd.h (for pre-POSIX systems); we need this for NeXTstep,
640 according to Mark Crispin <MRC@Panda.COM>.
641 [Bodo Moeller]
642
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +0000643#if 0
Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +0000644 *) DES CBC did not update the IV. Weird.
645 [Ben Laurie]
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +0000646#else
Bodo Möllera7bd0391999-06-09 18:01:49 +0000647 des_cbc_encrypt does not update the IV, but des_ncbc_encrypt does.
648 Changing the behaviour of the former might break existing programs --
649 where IV updating is needed, des_ncbc_encrypt can be used.
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +0000650#endif
Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +0000651
Ben Laurie233bf731999-06-09 10:19:53 +0000652 *) When bntest is run from "make test" it drives bc to check its
653 calculations, as well as internally checking them. If an internal check
654 fails, it needs to cause bc to give a non-zero result or make test carries
655 on without noticing the failure. Fixed.
656 [Ben Laurie]
657
Ulf Möller908eb7b1999-06-08 16:35:11 +0000658 *) DES library cleanups.
659 [Ulf Möller]
660
Dr. Stephen Henson8eb57af1999-06-08 00:09:51 +0000661 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 PBE algorithms. This will permit PKCS#8 to be
662 used with any cipher unlike PKCS#5 v1.5 which can at most handle 64 bit
663 ciphers. NOTE: although the key derivation function has been verified
664 against some published test vectors it has not been extensively tested
665 yet. Added a -v2 "cipher" option to pkcs8 application to allow the use
666 of v2.0.
667 [Steve Henson]
668
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +0000669 *) Instead of "mkdir -p", which is not fully portable, use new
670 Perl script "util/mkdir-p.pl".
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +0000671 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +0000672
Dr. Stephen Henson69cbf461999-06-06 13:07:13 +0000673 *) Rewrite the way password based encryption (PBE) is handled. It used to
674 assume that the ASN1 AlgorithmIdentifier parameter was a PBEParameter
675 structure. This was true for the PKCS#5 v1.5 and PKCS#12 PBE algorithms
676 but doesn't apply to PKCS#5 v2.0 where it can be something else. Now
677 the 'parameter' field of the AlgorithmIdentifier is passed to the
678 underlying key generation function so it must do its own ASN1 parsing.
679 This has also changed the EVP_PBE_CipherInit() function which now has a
680 'parameter' argument instead of literal salt and iteration count values
681 and the function EVP_PBE_ALGOR_CipherInit() has been deleted.
682 [Steve Henson]
683
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +0000684 *) Support for PKCS#5 v1.5 compatible password based encryption algorithms
Dr. Stephen Hensone7871ff1999-06-05 12:39:10 +0000685 and PKCS#8 functionality. New 'pkcs8' application linked to openssl.
686 Needed to change the PEM_STRING_EVP_PKEY value which was just "PRIVATE
687 KEY" because this clashed with PKCS#8 unencrypted string. Since this
688 value was just used as a "magic string" and not used directly its
689 value doesn't matter.
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +0000690 [Steve Henson]
691
Ben Laurie84c15db1999-06-04 22:23:10 +0000692 *) Introduce some semblance of const correctness to BN. Shame C doesn't
693 support mutable.
694 [Ben Laurie]
695
Bodo Möller272c9331999-06-07 00:26:20 +0000696 *) "linux-sparc64" configuration (ultrapenguin).

Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +0000752
Ulf Möllere14d4441999-05-20 01:43:07 +0000753 *) Bignum library bug fix. IRIX 6 passes "make test" now!
754 This also avoids the problems with SC4.2 and unpatched SC5.
755 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
756
Dr. Stephen Hensone84240d1999-05-19 12:45:16 +0000757 *) New functions sk_num, sk_value and sk_set to replace the previous macros.
758 These are required because of the typesafe stack would otherwise break
759 existing code. If old code used a structure member which used to be STACK
760 and is now STACK_OF (for example cert in a PKCS7_SIGNED structure) with
761 sk_num or sk_value it would produce an error because the num, data members
762 are not present in STACK_OF. Now it just produces a warning. sk_set
763 replaces the old method of assigning a value to sk_value
764 (e.g. sk_value(x, i) = y) which the library used in a few cases. Any code
765 that does this will no longer work (and should use sk_set instead) but
766 this could be regarded as a "questionable" behaviour anyway.
767 [Steve Henson]
768
Dr. Stephen Henson1b266da1999-05-16 17:32:32 +0000769 *) Fix most of the other PKCS#7 bugs. The "experimental" code can now
770 correctly handle encrypted S/MIME data.
771 [Steve Henson]
772
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +0000773 *) Change type of various DES function arguments from des_cblock
Bodo Möllerf43c8141999-05-16 14:20:17 +0000774 (which means, in function argument declarations, pointer to char)
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +0000775 to des_cblock * (meaning pointer to array with 8 char elements),
776 which allows the compiler to do more typechecking; it was like
777 that back in SSLeay, but with lots of ugly casts.
778
779 Introduce new type const_des_cblock.
780 [Bodo Moeller]
781
Dr. Stephen Henson84fa7041999-05-16 00:25:36 +0000782 *) Reorganise the PKCS#7 library and get rid of some of the more obvious
783 problems: find RecipientInfo structure that matches recipient certificate
784 and initialise the ASN1 structures properly based on passed cipher.
785 [Steve Henson]
786
Ben Laurie62bad771999-05-15 15:59:28 +0000787 *) Belatedly make the BN tests actually check the results.
788 [Ben Laurie]
789
Dr. Stephen Henson1ad2ecb1999-05-14 18:21:21 +0000790 *) Fix the encoding and decoding of negative ASN1 INTEGERS and conversion
791 to and from BNs: it was completely broken. New compilation option
792 NEG_PUBKEY_BUG to allow for some broken certificates that encode public
793 key elements as negative integers.
794 [Steve Henson]
795
Ulf Möllerbd3576d1999-05-13 13:16:42 +0000796 *) Reorganize and speed up MD5.
797 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
798
Ulf Möller7d7d2cb1999-05-13 11:37:32 +0000799 *) VMS support.
800 [Richard Levitte <richard@levitte.org>]
801
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5eac851999-05-12 01:56:27 +0000802 *) New option -out to asn1parse to allow the parsed structure to be
803 output to a file. This is most useful when combined with the -strparse
804 option to examine the output of things like OCTET STRINGS.
805 [Steve Henson]
806
Bodo Möllerb31b04d1999-05-11 07:43:16 +0000807 *) Make SSL library a little more fool-proof by not requiring any longer
808 that SSL_set_{accept,connect}_state be called before
809 SSL_{accept,connect} may be used (SSL_set_..._state is omitted
810 in many applications because usually everything *appeared* to work as
811 intended anyway -- now it really works as intended).
812 [Bodo Moeller]
813
Ulf Möllerd5a2ea41999-05-10 23:59:28 +0000814 *) Move openssl.cnf out of lib/.
815 [Ulf Möller]
816
Ralf S. Engelschall397f7031999-05-10 08:33:56 +0000817 *) Fix various things to let OpenSSL even pass ``egcc -pipe -O2 -Wall
818 -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wmissing-prototypes
819 -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Winline'' with EGCS 1.1.2+
820 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
821
Dr. Stephen Henson884e8ec1999-05-10 00:47:42 +0000822 *) Various fixes to the EVP and PKCS#7 code. It may now be able to
823 handle PKCS#7 enveloped data properly.
824 [Sebastian Akerman <sak@parallelconsulting.com>, modified by Steve]
825
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +0000826 *) Create a duplicate of the SSL_CTX's CERT in SSL_new instead of
827 copying pointers. The cert_st handling is changed by this in
828 various ways (and thus what used to be known as ctx->default_cert
829 is now called ctx->cert, since we don't resort to s->ctx->[default_]cert
830 any longer when s->cert does not give us what we need).
831 ssl_cert_instantiate becomes obsolete by this change.
832 As soon as we've got the new code right (possibly it already is?),
833 we have solved a couple of bugs of the earlier code where s->cert
834 was used as if it could not have been shared with other SSL structures.
835
836 Note that using the SSL API in certain dirty ways now will result
837 in different behaviour than observed with earlier library versions:
838 Changing settings for an SSL_CTX *ctx after having done s = SSL_new(ctx)
839 does not influence s as it used to.
840
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +0000841 In order to clean up things more thoroughly, inside SSL_SESSION
Bodo Möllerb56bce41999-05-13 15:09:38 +0000842 we don't use CERT any longer, but a new structure SESS_CERT
843 that holds per-session data (if available); currently, this is
844 the peer's certificate chain and, for clients, the server's certificate
845 and temporary key. CERT holds only those values that can have
846 meaningful defaults in an SSL_CTX.
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +0000847 [Bodo Moeller]
848
Dr. Stephen Hensonc8b41851999-05-09 16:39:11 +0000849 *) New function X509V3_EXT_i2d() to create an X509_EXTENSION structure
850 from the internal representation. Various PKCS#7 fixes: remove some
851 evil casts and set the enc_dig_alg field properly based on the signing
852 key type.
853 [Steve Henson]
854
Dr. Stephen Hensone40b7ab1999-05-08 12:59:50 +0000855 *) Allow PKCS#12 password to be set from the command line or the
856 environment. Let 'ca' get its config file name from the environment
857 variables "OPENSSL_CONF" or "SSLEAY_CONF" (for consistency with 'req'
858 and 'x509').
859 [Steve Henson]
860
861 *) Allow certificate policies extension to use an IA5STRING for the
862 organization field. This is contrary to the PKIX definition but
863 VeriSign uses it and IE5 only recognises this form. Document 'x509'
864 extension option.
865 [Steve Henson]
866
Ben Laurie5b640021999-05-07 15:42:23 +0000867 *) Add PEDANTIC compiler flag to allow compilation with gcc -pedantic,
868 without disallowing inline assembler and the like for non-pedantic builds.
869 [Ben Laurie]
870
Ulf Möller31a674d1999-05-06 00:46:34 +0000871 *) Support Borland C++ builder.
872 [Janez Jere <jj@void.si>, modified by Ulf Möller]
873
874 *) Support Mingw32.
875 [Ulf Möller]
876
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +0000877 *) SHA-1 cleanups and performance enhancements.
878 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
879
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +0000880 *) Sparc v8plus assembler for the bignum library.
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +0000881 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +0000882
Ulf Möllerafd1f9e1999-05-04 11:52:26 +0000883 *) Accept any -xxx and +xxx compiler options in Configure.
884 [Ulf Möller]
885
886 *) Update HPUX configuration.
887 [Anonymous]
888
Ralf S. Engelschalldee75ec1999-05-04 10:15:02 +0000889 *) Add missing sk_<type>_unshift() function to safestack.h
890 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
891
Bodo Möllerb3ca6451999-05-01 17:43:52 +0000892 *) New function SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file that sets the
893 "extra_cert"s in addition to the certificate. (This makes sense
894 only for "PEM" format files, as chains as a whole are not
895 DER-encoded.)
896 [Bodo Moeller]
897
Bodo Möller7f897141999-05-01 03:20:40 +0000898 *) Support verify_depth from the SSL API.
899 x509_vfy.c had what can be considered an off-by-one-error:
900 Its depth (which was not part of the external interface)
901 was actually counting the number of certificates in a chain;
902 now it really counts the depth.
903 [Bodo Moeller]
904
Bodo Möllerdc1f6071999-05-01 20:16:35 +0000905 *) Bugfix in crypto/x509/x509_cmp.c: The SSLerr macro was used
906 instead of X509err, which often resulted in confusing error
907 messages since the error codes are not globally unique
908 (e.g. an alleged error in ssl3_accept when a certificate
909 didn't match the private key).
910
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +0000911 *) New function SSL_CTX_set_session_id_context that allows to set a default
Bodo Möllerdd1462f1999-05-01 00:07:42 +0000912 value (so that you don't need SSL_set_session_id_context for each
913 connection using the SSL_CTX).
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +0000914 [Bodo Moeller]
915
Ulf Möllerc6652741999-04-29 21:56:13 +0000916 *) OAEP decoding bug fix.
917 [Ulf Möller]
918
Bodo Möllere5f30451999-04-29 21:52:08 +0000919 *) Support INSTALL_PREFIX for package builders, as proposed by
920 David Harris.
921 [Bodo Moeller]
922
Bodo Möller87bc2c01999-04-29 16:10:41 +0000923 *) New Configure options "threads" and "no-threads". For systems
924 where the proper compiler options are known (currently Solaris
925 and Linux), "threads" is the default.
926 [Bodo Moeller]
927
Bodo Möller6e6acfd1999-04-28 22:33:54 +0000928 *) New script util/mklink.pl as a faster substitute for util/mklink.sh.
929 [Bodo Moeller]
930
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +0000931 *) Install various scripts to $(OPENSSLDIR)/misc, not to
932 $(INSTALLTOP)/bin -- they shouldn't clutter directories
933 such as /usr/local/bin.
934 [Bodo Moeller]
935
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +0000936 *) "make linux-shared" to build shared libraries.
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +0000937 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +0000938
Ulf Möllerf5d7a031999-04-27 01:14:46 +0000939 *) New Configure option no-<cipher> (rsa, idea, rc5, ...).
940 [Ulf Möller]
941
Dr. Stephen Hensonb64f8251999-04-27 00:36:20 +0000942 *) Add the PKCS#12 API documentation to openssl.txt. Preliminary support for
943 extension adding in x509 utility.
944 [Steve Henson]
945
Ulf Möllera9be3af1999-04-26 16:43:10 +0000946 *) Remove NOPROTO sections and error code comments.
947 [Ulf Möller]
948
Dr. Stephen Henson47339f61999-04-26 00:23:10 +0000949 *) Partial rewrite of the DEF file generator to now parse the ANSI
950 prototypes.
951 [Steve Henson]
952
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +0000953 *) New Configure options --prefix=DIR and --openssldir=DIR.
Ulf Möller9c4711c1999-04-24 23:39:52 +0000954 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +0000955
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +0000956 *) Complete rewrite of the error code script(s). It is all now handled
957 by one script at the top level which handles error code gathering,
958 header rewriting and C source file generation. It should be much better
959 than the old method: it now uses a modified version of Ulf's parser to
960 read the ANSI prototypes in all header files (thus the old K&R definitions
961 aren't needed for error creation any more) and do a better job of
962 translating function codes into names. The old 'ASN1 error code imbedded
963 in a comment' is no longer necessary and it doesn't use .err files which
Dr. Stephen Henson6e781e81999-04-24 13:28:57 +0000964 have now been deleted. Also the error code call doesn't have to appear all
965 on one line (which resulted in some large lines...).
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +0000966 [Steve Henson]
967
Bodo Möller018b4ee1999-04-23 22:38:22 +0000968 *) Change #include filenames from <foo.h> to <openssl/foo.h>.
Bodo Möller92df9601999-04-23 22:20:21 +0000969 [Bodo Moeller]
970
Bodo Möller85f48f71999-04-22 14:28:38 +0000971 *) Change behaviour of ssl2_read when facing length-0 packets: Don't return
972 0 (which usually indicates a closed connection), but continue reading.
973 [Bodo Moeller]
974
Bodo Möller90b8bbb1999-04-22 13:38:03 +0000975 *) Fix some race conditions.
976 [Bodo Moeller]
977
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +0000978 *) Add support for CRL distribution points extension. Add Certificate
979 Policies and CRL distribution points documentation.
980 [Steve Henson]
981
Ulf Möller8e10f2b1999-04-21 17:31:05 +0000982 *) Move the autogenerated header file parts to crypto/opensslconf.h.
983 [Ulf Möller]
984
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +0000985 *) Fix new 56-bit DES export ciphersuites: they were using 7 bytes instead of
986 8 of keying material. Merlin has also confirmed interop with this fix
987 between OpenSSL and Baltimore C/SSL 2.0 and J/SSL 2.0.
988 [Merlin Hughes <merlin@baltimore.ie>]
989
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +0000990 *) Fix lots of warnings.
991 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
992
993 *) In add_cert_dir() in crypto/x509/by_dir.c, break out of the loop if
994 the directory spec didn't end with a LIST_SEPARATOR_CHAR.
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +0000995 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +0000996
Ulf Möller8fb04b91999-04-20 16:23:03 +0000997 *) Fix problems with sizeof(long) == 8.
998 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
999
Ulf Möller6b691a51999-04-19 21:31:43 +00001000 *) Change functions to ANSI C.
1001 [Ulf Möller]
1002
Ulf Möllerdf82f5c1999-04-19 14:45:02 +00001003 *) Fix typos in error codes.
1004 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>, Ulf Möller]
1005
Ulf Möller22a4f961999-04-19 13:54:11 +00001006 *) Remove defunct assembler files from Configure.
1007 [Ulf Möller]
1008
Ulf Möller5e85b6a1999-04-19 13:41:45 +00001009 *) SPARC v8 assembler BIGNUM implementation.
1010 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1011
Dr. Stephen Henson3edd7ed1999-04-19 17:55:11 +00001012 *) Support for Certificate Policies extension: both print and set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00001013 Various additions to support the r2i method this uses.
Dr. Stephen Henson41b731f1999-04-18 23:21:03 +00001014 [Steve Henson]
1015
Ben Lauriee7788021999-04-17 21:25:43 +00001016 *) A lot of constification, and fix a bug in X509_NAME_oneline() that could
1017 return a const string when you are expecting an allocated buffer.
1018 [Ben Laurie]
1019
Dr. Stephen Hensonc83e5231999-04-17 23:55:39 +00001020 *) Add support for ASN1 types UTF8String and VISIBLESTRING, also the CHOICE
1021 types DirectoryString and DisplayText.
Dr. Stephen Hensond77b3051999-04-17 15:53:32 +00001022 [Steve Henson]
1023
Dr. Stephen Henson1d48dd01999-04-16 23:57:04 +00001024 *) Add code to allow r2i extensions to access the configuration database,
1025 add an LHASH database driver and add several ctx helper functions.
1026 [Steve Henson]
1027
Dr. Stephen Henson953937b1999-04-15 23:07:00 +00001028 *) Fix an evil bug in bn_expand2() which caused various BN functions to
1029 fail when they extended the size of a BIGNUM.
1030 [Steve Henson]
1031
Dr. Stephen Henson28a98801999-04-14 23:44:41 +00001032 *) Various utility functions to handle SXNet extension. Modify mkdef.pl to
1033 support typesafe stack.
1034 [Steve Henson]
1035
Ben Laurie8f7de4f1999-04-14 11:13:47 +00001036 *) Fix typo in SSL_[gs]et_options().
1037 [Nils Frostberg <nils@medcom.se>]
1038
Dr. Stephen Henson0490a861999-04-13 23:56:39 +00001039 *) Delete various functions and files that belonged to the (now obsolete)
1040 old X509V3 handling code.
1041 [Steve Henson]
1042
Ulf Möller5fbe91d1999-04-13 00:58:49 +00001043 *) New Configure option "rsaref".
1044 [Ulf Möller]
1045
Bodo Möller5fd4e2b1999-04-12 19:58:17 +00001046 *) Don't auto-generate pem.h.
1047 [Bodo Moeller]
1048
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00001049 *) Introduce type-safe ASN.1 SETs.
1050 [Ben Laurie]
1051
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00001052 *) Convert various additional casted stacks to type-safe STACK_OF() variants.
Ben Laurie135a1dc1999-05-07 09:18:25 +00001053 [Ben Laurie, Ralf S. Engelschall, Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00001054
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00001055 *) Introduce type-safe STACKs. This will almost certainly break lots of code
1056 that links with OpenSSL (well at least cause lots of warnings), but fear
1057 not: the conversion is trivial, and it eliminates loads of evil casts. A
1058 few STACKed things have been converted already. Feel free to convert more.
1059 In the fullness of time, I'll do away with the STACK type altogether.
1060 [Ben Laurie]
1061
Ralf S. Engelschallf9a25931999-04-12 11:45:14 +00001062 *) Add `openssl ca -revoke <certfile>' facility which revokes a certificate
1063 specified in <certfile> by updating the entry in the index.txt file.
1064 This way one no longer has to edit the index.txt file manually for
1065 revoking a certificate. The -revoke option does the gory details now.
1066 [Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@openca.org>, Ralf S. Engelschall]
1067
Ralf S. Engelschall2f0cd191999-04-12 10:36:16 +00001068 *) Fix `openssl crl -noout -text' combination where `-noout' killed the
1069 `-text' option at all and this way the `-noout -text' combination was
1070 inconsistent in `openssl crl' with the friends in `openssl x509|rsa|dsa'.
1071 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1072
Ralf S. Engelschall268c2101999-04-12 09:59:05 +00001073 *) Make sure a corresponding plain text error message exists for the
1074 X509_V_ERR_CERT_REVOKED/23 error number which can occur when a
1075 verify callback function determined that a certificate was revoked.
1076 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1077
Bodo Möllerfc8ee061999-04-11 02:49:35 +00001078 *) Bugfix: In test/testenc, don't test "openssl <cipher>" for
1079 ciphers that were excluded, e.g. by -DNO_IDEA. Also, test
1080 all available cipers including rc5, which was forgotten until now.
1081 In order to let the testing shell script know which algorithms
1082 are available, a new (up to now undocumented) command
1083 "openssl list-cipher-commands" is used.
1084 [Bodo Moeller]
1085
Bodo Möllerc7ac31e1999-04-09 20:54:25 +00001086 *) Bugfix: s_client occasionally would sleep in select() when
1087 it should have checked SSL_pending() first.
1088 [Bodo Moeller]
1089
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00001090 *) New functions DSA_do_sign and DSA_do_verify to provide access to
1091 the raw DSA values prior to ASN.1 encoding.
1092 [Ulf Möller]
1093
1094 *) Tweaks to Configure
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00001095 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00001096
Dr. Stephen Hensond2e26dc1999-04-08 23:55:42 +00001097 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 ASN1 PBES2 structures. No other support,
1098 yet...
1099 [Steve Henson]
1100
Ulf Möller99aab161999-04-01 12:34:33 +00001101 *) New variables $(RANLIB) and $(PERL) in the Makefiles.
1102 [Ulf Möller]
1103
Ulf Möller2613c1f1999-03-31 12:38:27 +00001104 *) New config option to avoid instructions that are illegal on the 80386.
1105 The default code is faster, but requires at least a 486.
1106 [Ulf Möller]
1107
Bodo Möller6d02d8e1999-03-31 12:06:30 +00001108 *) Got rid of old SSL2_CLIENT_VERSION (inconsistently used) and
1109 SSL2_SERVER_VERSION (not used at all) macros, which are now the
1110 same as SSL2_VERSION anyway.
1111 [Bodo Moeller]
1112
1113 *) New "-showcerts" option for s_client.
1114 [Bodo Moeller]
1115
Dr. Stephen Hensonee0508d1999-03-29 17:50:26 +00001116 *) Still more PKCS#12 integration. Add pkcs12 application to openssl
1117 application. Various cleanups and fixes.
1118 [Steve Henson]
1119
Dr. Stephen Henson8d8c7261999-03-28 23:17:34 +00001120 *) More PKCS#12 integration. Add new pkcs12 directory with Makefile.ssl and
1121 modify error routines to work internally. Add error codes and PBE init
1122 to library startup routines.
1123 [Steve Henson]
1124
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00001125 *) Further PKCS#12 integration. Added password based encryption, PKCS#8 and
1126 packing functions to asn1 and evp. Changed function names and error
1127 codes along the way.
1128 [Steve Henson]
1129
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00001130 *) PKCS12 integration: and so it begins... First of several patches to
1131 slowly integrate PKCS#12 functionality into OpenSSL. Add PKCS#12
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00001132 objects to objects.h
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00001133 [Steve Henson]
1134
Dr. Stephen Henson785cdf21999-03-27 14:06:25 +00001135 *) Add a new 'indent' option to some X509V3 extension code. Initial ASN1
1136 and display support for Thawte strong extranet extension.
1137 [Steve Henson]
1138
Ben Laurieba423ad1999-03-27 13:03:37 +00001139 *) Add LinuxPPC support.
1140 [Jeff Dubrule <igor@pobox.org>]
1141
Ben Laurie67da3df1999-03-27 12:53:21 +00001142 *) Get rid of redundant BN file bn_mulw.c, and rename bn_div64 to
1143 bn_div_words in alpha.s.
1144 [Hannes Reinecke <H.Reinecke@hw.ac.uk> and Ben Laurie]
1145
Ralf S. Engelschall0e9fc711999-03-25 07:49:33 +00001146 *) Make sure the RSA OAEP test is skipped under -DRSAref because
1147 OAEP isn't supported when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
1148 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1149
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00001150 *) Move definitions of IS_SET/IS_SEQUENCE inside crypto/asn1/asn1.h
1151 so they no longer are missing under -DNOPROTO.
1152 [Soren S. Jorvang <soren@t.dk>]
1153
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00001154
1155 Changes between 0.9.1c and 0.9.2b [22 Mar 1999]
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00001156
Ben Laurieb4cadc61999-03-22 12:22:14 +00001157 *) Make SSL_get_peer_cert_chain() work in servers. Unfortunately, it still
1158 doesn't work when the session is reused. Coming soon!
1159 [Ben Laurie]
1160
1161 *) Fix a security hole, that allows sessions to be reused in the wrong
1162 context thus bypassing client cert protection! All software that uses
1163 client certs and session caches in multiple contexts NEEDS PATCHING to
1164 allow session reuse! A fuller solution is in the works.
1165 [Ben Laurie, problem pointed out by Holger Reif, Bodo Moeller (and ???)]
1166
Ralf S. Engelschallafb23061999-03-20 13:04:12 +00001167 *) Some more source tree cleanups (removed obsolete files
1168 crypto/bf/asm/bf586.pl, test/test.txt and crypto/sha/asm/f.s; changed
1169 permission on "config" script to be executable) and a fix for the INSTALL
1170 document.
1171 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1172
Dr. Stephen Henson199d59e1999-03-14 01:16:45 +00001173 *) Remove some legacy and erroneous uses of malloc, free instead of
1174 Malloc, Free.
1175 [Lennart Bang <lob@netstream.se>, with minor changes by Steve]
1176
Ben Laurieb4899bb1999-03-12 20:41:09 +00001177 *) Make rsa_oaep_test return non-zero on error.
1178 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1179
Ben Laurie29c0fcc1999-03-12 20:26:27 +00001180 *) Add support for native Solaris shared libraries. Configure
1181 solaris-sparc-sc4-pic, make, then run shlib/solaris-sc4.sh. It'd be nice
1182 if someone would make that last step automatic.
1183 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@AdNovum.CH>]
1184
Ben Lauriecadf1261999-03-12 19:58:43 +00001185 *) ctx_size was not built with the right compiler during "make links". Fixed.
1186 [Ben Laurie]
1187
Dr. Stephen Hensonbc420ac1999-03-12 01:43:28 +00001188 *) Change the meaning of 'ALL' in the cipher list. It now means "everything
1189 except NULL ciphers". This means the default cipher list will no longer
1190 enable NULL ciphers. They need to be specifically enabled e.g. with
1191 the string "DEFAULT:eNULL".
1192 [Steve Henson]
1193
Dr. Stephen Hensonabd4c911999-03-11 02:42:13 +00001194 *) Fix to RSA private encryption routines: if p < q then it would
1195 occasionally produce an invalid result. This will only happen with
1196 externally generated keys because OpenSSL (and SSLeay) ensure p > q.
1197 [Steve Henson]
1198
Ralf S. Engelschall7e37e721999-03-10 19:57:05 +00001199 *) Be less restrictive and allow also `perl util/perlpath.pl
1200 /path/to/bin/perl' in addition to `perl util/perlpath.pl /path/to/bin',
1201 because this way one can also use an interpreter named `perl5' (which is
1202 usually the name of Perl 5.xxx on platforms where an Perl 4.x is still
1203 installed as `perl').
1204 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1205
Ralf S. Engelschall637691e1999-03-10 19:51:43 +00001206 *) Let util/clean-depend.pl work also with older Perl 5.00x versions.
1207 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1208
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00001209 *) Fix Makefile.org so CC,CFLAG etc are passed to 'make links' add
1210 advapi32.lib to Win32 build and change the pem test comparision
1211 to fc.exe (thanks to Ulrich Kroener <kroneru@yahoo.com> for the
Dr. Stephen Henson38138021999-03-10 18:30:48 +00001212 suggestion). Fix misplaced ASNI prototypes and declarations in evp.h
1213 and crypto/des/ede_cbcm_enc.c.
1214 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00001215
Ben Laurieb241fef1999-03-09 11:37:23 +00001216 *) DES quad checksum was broken on big-endian architectures. Fixed.
1217 [Ben Laurie]
1218
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001219 *) Comment out two functions in bio.h that aren't implemented. Fix up the
1220 Win32 test batch file so it (might) work again. The Win32 test batch file
1221 is horrible: I feel ill....
1222 [Steve Henson]
1223
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00001224 *) Move various #ifdefs around so NO_SYSLOG, NO_DIRENT etc are now selected
1225 in e_os.h. Audit of header files to check ANSI and non ANSI
1226 sections: 10 functions were absent from non ANSI section and not exported
1227 from Windows DLLs. Fixed up libeay.num for new functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001228 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00001229
Ralf S. Engelschalld10f0521999-03-08 12:35:01 +00001230 *) Make `openssl version' output lines consistent.
1231 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1232
Ralf S. Engelschallc0e538e1999-03-08 11:41:26 +00001233 *) Fix Win32 symbol export lists for BIO functions: Added
1234 BIO_get_ex_new_index, BIO_get_ex_num, BIO_get_ex_data and BIO_set_ex_data
1235 to ms/libeay{16,32}.def.
1236 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1237
Ralf S. Engelschall84107e61999-03-08 11:25:49 +00001238 *) Second round of fixing the OpenSSL perl/ stuff. It now at least compiled
1239 fine under Unix and passes some trivial tests I've now added. But the
1240 whole stuff is horribly incomplete, so a README.1ST with a disclaimer was
1241 added to make sure no one expects that this stuff really works in the
1242 OpenSSL 0.9.2 release. Additionally I've started to clean the XS sources
1243 up and fixed a few little bugs and inconsistencies in OpenSSL.{pm,xs} and
1244 openssl_bio.xs.
1245 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1246
Ben Laurie26a08461999-03-07 15:08:38 +00001247 *) Fix the generation of two part addresses in perl.
1248 [Kenji Miyake <kenji@miyake.org>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
1249
Ben Laurie7d3ce7b1999-03-07 14:17:32 +00001250 *) Add config entry for Linux on MIPS.
1251 [John Tobey <jtobey@channel1.com>]
1252
Ben Laurieefadf601999-03-07 15:21:08 +00001253 *) Make links whenever Configure is run, unless we are on Windoze.
Ben Lauriecba50681999-03-07 14:05:36 +00001254 [Ben Laurie]
1255
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00001256 *) Permit extensions to be added to CRLs using crl_section in openssl.cnf.
1257 Currently only issuerAltName and AuthorityKeyIdentifier make any sense
1258 in CRLs.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001259 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00001260
Ralf S. Engelschall116e3151999-03-06 16:07:47 +00001261 *) Add a useful kludge to allow package maintainers to specify compiler and
1262 other platforms details on the command line without having to patch the
1263 Configure script everytime: One now can use ``perl Configure
1264 <id>:<details>'', i.e. platform ids are allowed to have details appended
1265 to them (seperated by colons). This is treated as there would be a static
1266 pre-configured entry in Configure's %table under key <id> with value
1267 <details> and ``perl Configure <id>'' is called. So, when you want to
1268 perform a quick test-compile under FreeBSD 3.1 with pgcc and without
1269 assembler stuff you can use ``perl Configure "FreeBSD-elf:pgcc:-O6:::"''
1270 now, which overrides the FreeBSD-elf entry on-the-fly.
1271 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1272
Ben Lauriebc348241999-03-06 15:21:02 +00001273 *) Disable new TLS1 ciphersuites by default: they aren't official yet.
1274 [Ben Laurie]
1275
Ralf S. Engelschall3eb0ed61999-03-06 14:35:03 +00001276 *) Allow DSO flags like -fpic, -fPIC, -KPIC etc. to be specified
1277 on the `perl Configure ...' command line. This way one can compile
1278 OpenSSL libraries with Position Independent Code (PIC) which is needed
1279 for linking it into DSOs.
1280 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1281
Ben Laurief415fa31999-03-06 14:09:36 +00001282 *) Remarkably, export ciphers were totally broken and no-one had noticed!
1283 Fixed.
1284 [Ben Laurie]
1285
Ralf S. Engelschall0b903ec1999-03-06 13:29:09 +00001286 *) Cleaned up the LICENSE document: The official contact for any license
1287 questions now is the OpenSSL core team under openssl-core@openssl.org.
1288 And add a paragraph about the dual-license situation to make sure people
1289 recognize that _BOTH_ the OpenSSL license _AND_ the SSLeay license apply
1290 to the OpenSSL toolkit.
1291 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1292
Ralf S. Engelschallbb8f3c51999-03-06 12:32:06 +00001293 *) General source tree makefile cleanups: Made `making xxx in yyy...'
1294 display consistent in the source tree and replaced `/bin/rm' by `rm'.
1295 Additonally cleaned up the `make links' target: Remove unnecessary
1296 semicolons, subsequent redundant removes, inline point.sh into mklink.sh
1297 to speed processing and no longer clutter the display with confusing
1298 stuff. Instead only the actually done links are displayed.
1299 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1300
Ben Laurie988788f1999-03-06 12:09:36 +00001301 *) Permit null encryption ciphersuites, used for authentication only. It used
1302 to be necessary to set the preprocessor define SSL_ALLOW_ENULL to do this.
1303 It is now necessary to set SSL_FORBID_ENULL to prevent the use of null
1304 encryption.
1305 [Ben Laurie]
1306
Dr. Stephen Henson924acc51999-03-05 02:05:15 +00001307 *) Add a bunch of fixes to the PKCS#7 stuff. It used to sometimes reorder
1308 signed attributes when verifying signatures (this would break them),
1309 the detached data encoding was wrong and public keys obtained using
1310 X509_get_pubkey() weren't freed.
1311 [Steve Henson]
1312
Dr. Stephen Hensond00b7aa1999-03-05 01:07:04 +00001313 *) Add text documentation for the BUFFER functions. Also added a work around
1314 to a Win95 console bug. This was triggered by the password read stuff: the
1315 last character typed gets carried over to the next fread(). If you were
1316 generating a new cert request using 'req' for example then the last
1317 character of the passphrase would be CR which would then enter the first
1318 field as blank.
Dr. Stephen Henson9985bed1999-03-04 23:29:51 +00001319 [Steve Henson]
1320
Ralf S. Engelschall789285a1999-03-04 12:55:42 +00001321 *) Added the new `Includes OpenSSL Cryptography Software' button as
1322 doc/openssl_button.{gif,html} which is similar in style to the old SSLeay
1323 button and can be used by applications based on OpenSSL to show the
1324 relationship to the OpenSSL project.
1325 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1326
Ralf S. Engelschalla06c6021999-03-04 07:54:01 +00001327 *) Remove confusing variables in function signatures in files
1328 ssl/ssl_lib.c and ssl/ssl.h.
1329 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
1330
Ralf S. Engelschall8d697db1999-03-04 07:47:27 +00001331 *) Don't install bss_file.c under PREFIX/include/
1332 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
1333
Dr. Stephen Henson06c68491999-03-03 02:01:26 +00001334 *) Get the Win32 compile working again. Modify mkdef.pl so it can handle
1335 functions that return function pointers and has support for NT specific
1336 stuff. Fix mk1mf.pl and VC-32.pl to support NT differences also. Various
1337 #ifdef WIN32 and WINNTs sprinkled about the place and some changes from
1338 unsigned to signed types: this was killing the Win32 compile.
1339 [Steve Henson]
1340
Ralf S. Engelschall72e442a1999-03-22 15:50:34 +00001341 *) Add new certificate file to stack functions,
1342 SSL_add_dir_cert_subjects_to_stack() and
1343 SSL_add_file_cert_subjects_to_stack(). These largely supplant
1344 SSL_load_client_CA_file(), and can be used to add multiple certs easily
1345 to a stack (usually this is then handed to SSL_CTX_set_client_CA_list()).
Ben Laurieeb90a481999-02-28 17:41:55 +00001346 This means that Apache-SSL and similar packages don't have to mess around
1347 to add as many CAs as they want to the preferred list.
1348 [Ben Laurie]
1349
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00001350 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
1351 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
1352 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
1353 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
1354 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +00001355
1356 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
1357 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00001358
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +00001359 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
1360 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
1361 [Steve Henson]
1362
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +00001363 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
1364 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
1365 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
1366 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
1367 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
1368 (e.g. s_server).
1369 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
1370 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
1371 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
1372 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
1373 no way to reconfigure them.
1374 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
1375 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
1376 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
1377 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
1378 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
1379 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1380
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +00001381 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
1382 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
1383 recognized by the users.
1384 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1385
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +00001386 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
1387 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
1388 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
1389 already masked variable.
1390 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1391
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +00001392 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
1393 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1394
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +00001395 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
1396 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
1397 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
1398 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1399
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +00001400 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
1401 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
1402 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1403
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +00001404 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
1405 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
1406 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
1407 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
1408 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
1409 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
1410 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
1411 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
1412 now, too.
1413 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1414
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +00001415 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
1416 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
1417 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
1418
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +00001419 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
1420 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
1421 config file.
1422 [Steve Henson]
1423
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +00001424 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
1425 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
1426
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +00001427 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
1428 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
1429 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
1430 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
1431 [Ben Laurie]
1432
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +00001433 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
1434 [Steve Henson]
1435
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +00001436 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
1437 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1438
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +00001439 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
1440 [Ben Laurie]
1441
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +00001442 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
1443 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
1444 [Steve Henson]
1445
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00001446 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
1447 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
1448 [Steve Henson]
1449
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +00001450 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
1451 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
1452 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
1453 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
1454 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
1455 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
1456 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
1457 Ben Laurie]
1458
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +00001459 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
1460 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1461
1462 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
1463 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
1464 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
1465 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
1466 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1467
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001468 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
1469 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00001470 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001471 [Steve Henson]
1472
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00001473 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
1474 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for
1475 an example.
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001476 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00001477
Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +00001478 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
1479 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
1480 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
1481
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +00001482 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
1483 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
1484 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
1485 build instructions.
1486 [Steve Henson]
1487
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +00001488 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
1489 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
1490 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
1491 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
1492 [Steve Henson]
1493
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +00001494 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
1495 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
1496 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
1497 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
1498 [Ben Laurie]
1499
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00001500 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
1501 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
1502 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
1503 so it wasn't spotted.
1504 [Steve Henson, reported by Erwann ABALEA <eabalea@certplus.com>]
1505
Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +00001506 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
1507 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
1508 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
1509 vectors if you have them.
1510 [Ben Laurie]
1511
Ralf S. Engelschall2c6ccde1999-03-06 14:01:29 +00001512 *) Correct calculation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +00001513 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
1514 [Ben Laurie]
1515
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00001516 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
1517 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
1518 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
1519 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
1520 If you do a:
1521 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
1522 it will update them.
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00001523 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00001524
Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +00001525 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
1526 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
1527 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
1528 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
1529 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
1530 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
1531 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
1532 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1533
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +00001534 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
1535 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
1536 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
1537 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
1538 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
1539 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
1540 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
1541 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
1542 the crypto/md/ stuff).
1543 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1544
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +00001545 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
1546 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
1547 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
1548 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
1549 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
1550 [Steve Henson]
1551
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +00001552 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the
1553 INTEGER code.
1554 [Steve Henson]
1555
Mark J. Cox351d8991999-01-31 12:14:39 +00001556 *) Add new function, EVP_MD_CTX_copy() to replace frequent use of memcpy.
1557 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1558
Ralf S. Engelschallb621d771999-01-31 11:10:10 +00001559 *) Make sure `make rehash' target really finds the `openssl' program.
1560 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1561
Ben Lauriea96e7811999-01-30 17:53:00 +00001562 *) Squeeze another 7% of speed out of MD5 assembler, at least on a P2. I'd
1563 like to hear about it if this slows down other processors.
1564 [Ben Laurie]
1565
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +00001566 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.
1567 [Alan Batie <batie@aahz.jf.intel.com>]
1568
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00001569 *) Fixed ms/32all.bat script: `no_asm' -> `no-asm'
1570 [Rainer W. Gerling <gerling@mpg-gv.mpg.de>]
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00001571
1572 *) New program nseq to manipulate netscape certificate sequences
1573 [Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +00001574
Dr. Stephen Henson9fe84291999-01-29 01:53:55 +00001575 *) Modify crl2pkcs7 so it supports multiple -certfile arguments. Fix a
1576 few typos.
1577 [Steve Henson]
1578
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +00001579 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION
1580 but the BN code had some problems that would cause failures when
1581 doing certificate verification and some other functions.
1582 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1583
Dr. Stephen Henson92c046c1999-01-28 00:16:44 +00001584 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
1585 [Steve Henson]
1586
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00001587 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
1588 [Steve Henson]
1589
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +00001590 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
1591 [Steve Henson]
1592
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +00001593 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
1594 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
1595 [Steve Henson]
1596
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00001597 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
1598 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
1599 CA extensions.
1600 [Steve Henson]
1601
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00001602 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the
1603 error code, add initial support to X509_print() and x509 application.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00001604 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00001605
Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +00001606 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
1607 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
1608 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
1609 [Steve Henson]
1610
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00001611 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
1612 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
1613 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
1614 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
1615 properly to be processed.
1616 [Steve Henson]
1617
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +00001618 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
1619 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
1620 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
1621 [Ben Laurie]
1622
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +00001623 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.
1624 [Ben Laurie, reported by Jeremy Hylton <jeremy@cnri.reston.va.us>]
1625
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00001626 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
1627 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
1628 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
1629 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
1630 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
1631 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
1632 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
1633 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
1634 or delete all the .err files.
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00001635 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00001636
Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +00001637 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
1638 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
1639 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
1640 to regenerate it if needed.
1641 [Ben Laurie, reported (with fix for C version) by Jun-ichiro itojun
1642 Hagino <itojun@kame.net>]
1643
1644 *) File was opened incorrectly in randfile.c.
1645 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1646
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +00001647 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
1648 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
1649 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
1650 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
1651 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
1652 [Steve Henson]
1653
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +00001654 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.
1655 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1656
Ben Laurie512d2221999-01-17 14:14:41 +00001657 *) Remove pointless MD5 hash when using DSA keys in ca.
1658 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
1659
Ben Laurie2c1ef381999-01-17 14:10:08 +00001660 *) Generate an error if given an empty string as a cert directory. Also
1661 generate an error if handed NULL (previously returned 0 to indicate an
1662 error, but didn't set one).
1663 [Ben Laurie, reported by Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
1664
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +00001665 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
1666 [Ben Laurie]
1667

1674
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +00001675 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
1676 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
1677 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
1678 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
1679 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
1680 OID is not part of the table.

1707
Ben Laurie5b001151999-01-06 23:18:08 +00001708 *) Temp key "for export" tests were wrong in s3_srvr.c.
1709 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
1710
Ben Laurief8c3c051999-01-06 22:53:34 +00001711 *) Add prototype for temp key callback functions
1712 SSL_CTX_set_tmp_{rsa,dh}_callback().
1713 [Ben Laurie]
1714
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00001715 *) Make DH_free() tolerate being passed a NULL pointer (like RSA_free() and
1716 DSA_free()). Make X509_PUBKEY_set() check for errors in d2i_PublicKey().
Dr. Stephen Henson384c4791999-01-06 01:41:21 +00001717 [Steve Henson]

1730
Ralf S. Engelschallcb0f35d1999-01-03 15:31:11 +00001731 *) Make sure the already existing X509_STORE->depth variable is initialized
1732 in X509_STORE_new(), but document the fact that this variable is still
1733 unused in the certificate verification process.
1734 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1735
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcf6451999-01-03 01:08:33 +00001736 *) Fix the various library and apps files to free up pkeys obtained from
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00001737 X509_PUBKEY_get() et al. Also allow x509.c to handle netscape extensions.

1742 [Steve Henson and Ben Laurie]
1743
Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00001744 *) First cut of a cleanup for apps/. First the `ssleay' program is now named
1745 `openssl' and second, the shortcut symlinks for the `openssl <command>'
1746 are no longer created. This way we have a single and consistent command
1747 line interface `openssl <command>', similar to `cvs <command>'.
Ben Lauriecdbb8c21999-01-02 19:04:27 +00001748 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Paul Sutton and Ben Laurie]

1770 [Ben Laurie]
1771
stephen792a9001998-12-31 01:35:07 +00001772 *) Enhanced the err-ins.pl script so it makes the error library number
1773 global and can add a library name. This is needed for external ASN1 and
1774 other error libraries.
1775 [Steve Henson]
1776
1777 *) Fixed sk_insert which never worked properly.
1778 [Steve Henson]
1779
1780 *) Fix ASN1 macros so they can handle indefinite length construted

1783 [Steve Henson]
1784
Ralf S. Engelschallce72df11998-12-30 23:07:32 +00001785 *) Merged the various old/obsolete SSLeay documentation files (doc/xxx.doc)
1786 into a single doc/ssleay.txt bundle. This way the information is still
1787 preserved but no longer messes up this directory. Now it's new room for
1788 the new set of documenation files.
1789 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1790
Ben Laurie4098e891998-12-29 21:43:55 +00001791 *) SETs were incorrectly DER encoded. This was a major pain, because they
1792 shared code with SEQUENCEs, which aren't coded the same. This means that
1793 almost everything to do with SETs or SEQUENCEs has either changed name or
1794 number of arguments.
1795 [Ben Laurie, based on a partial fix by GP Jayan <gp@nsj.co.jp>]
