Ralf S. Engelschalld91e2011999-08-09 11:14:08 +00005 Changes between 0.9.4 and 0.9.5 [xx XXX 1999]
6
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00007 *) Very preliminary certificate chain verify code. Currently just tests
8 the untrusted certificates for consistency with the verify purpose
9 (which is set when the X509_STORE_CTX structure is set up) and checks
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +000010 the pathlength. There is a NO_CHAIN_VERIFY compilation option to keep
11 the old behaviour: this is because when it is finally working it will
12 reject chains with invalid extensions whereas before it made no checks
13 at all.
14
15 Still needs some trust checking code.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +000016
17 Also added X509_STORE_CTX_new() and X509_STORE_CTX_free() functions
18 which should be used for version portability: especially since the
19 verify structure is likely to change more often now.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +000020
21 Two new options to the verify program: -untrusted allows a set of
22 untrusted certificates to be passed in and -purpose which sets the
23 intended purpose of the certificate. If a purpose is set then the
24 new chain verify code is used to check extension consistency.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +000025 [Steve Henson]
26
27 *) Support for the authority information access extension.
Dr. Stephen Henson6d3724d1999-11-23 18:50:28 +000028 [Steve Henson]
29
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +000030 *) Modify RSA and DSA PEM read routines to transparently handle
31 PKCS#8 format private keys. New *_PUBKEY_* functions that handle
32 public keys in a format compatible with certificate
33 SubjectPublicKeyInfo structures. Unfortunately there were already
34 functions called *_PublicKey_* which used various odd formats so
35 these are retained for compatability: however the DSA variants were
36 never in a public release so they have been deleted. Changed dsa/rsa
37 utilities to handle the new format: note no releases ever handled public
38 keys so we should be OK.
39
40 The primary motivation for this change is to avoid the same fiasco
41 that dogs private keys: there are several incompatible private key
42 formats some of which are standard and some OpenSSL specific and
43 require various evil hacks to allow partial transparent handling and
44 even then it doesn't work with DER formats. Given the option anything
45 other than PKCS#8 should be dumped: but the other formats have to
46 stay in the name of compatability.
47
48 With public keys and the benefit of hindsight one standard format
49 is used which works with EVP_PKEY, RSA or DSA structures: though
50 it clearly returns an error if you try to read the wrong kind of key.
51
52 Added a -pubkey option to the 'x509' utility to output the public key.
53 Also rename the EVP_PKEY_get_*() to EVP_PKEY_rget_*() and add
54 EVP_PKEY_rset_*() functions that do the same as the EVP_PKEY_assign_*()
55 except they up the reference count of the added key (they don't "swallow"
56 the supplied key).
57 [Steve Henson]
58
59 *) Fixes to crypto/x509/by_file.c the code to read in certificates and
60 CRLs would fail if the file contained no certificates or no CRLs:
61 added a new function to read in both types and return the number
62 read: this means that if none are read it will be an error. The
63 DER versions of the certificate and CRL reader would always fail
64 because it isn't possible to mix certificates and CRLs in DER format
65 without choking one or the other routine. Changed this to just read
66 a certificate: this is the best we can do. Also modified the code
67 in apps/verify.c to take notice of return codes: it was previously
68 attempting to read in certificates from NULL pointers and ignoring
69 any errors: this is one reason why the cert and CRL reader seemed
70 to work. It doesn't check return codes from the default certificate
71 routines: these may well fail if the certificates aren't installed.
72 [Steve Henson]
73
Dr. Stephen Hensona716d721999-11-19 02:19:58 +000074 *) Code to support otherName option in GeneralName.
75 [Steve Henson]
76
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +000077 *) First update to verify code. Change the verify utility
78 so it warns if it is passed a self signed certificate:
79 for consistency with the normal behaviour. X509_verify
80 has been modified to it will now verify a self signed
81 certificate if *exactly* the same certificate appears
82 in the store: it was previously impossible to trust a
83 single self signed certificate. This means that:
84 openssl verify ss.pem
85 now gives a warning about a self signed certificate but
86 openssl verify -CAfile ss.pem ss.pem
87 is OK.
88 [Steve Henson]
89
Bodo Möllerb1fe6ca1999-11-16 23:15:41 +000090 *) For servers, store verify_result in SSL_SESSION data structure
91 (and add it to external session representation).
92 This is needed when client certificate verifications fails,
93 but an application-provided verification callback (set by
94 SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback) allows accepting the session
95 anyway (i.e. leaves x509_store_ctx->error != X509_V_OK
96 but returns 1): When the session is reused, we have to set
97 ssl->verify_result to the appropriate error code to avoid
98 security holes.
99 [Bodo Moeller, problem pointed out by Lutz Jaenicke]
100
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +0000101 *) Fix a bug in the new PKCS#7 code: it didn't consider the
102 case in PKCS7_dataInit() where the signed PKCS7 structure
103 didn't contain any existing data because it was being created.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +0000104 [Po-Cheng Chen <pocheng@nst.com.tw>, slightly modified by Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +0000105
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd699ac1999-11-16 02:49:25 +0000106 *) Add a salt to the key derivation routines in enc.c. This
107 forms the first 8 bytes of the encrypted file. Also add a
108 -S option to allow a salt to be input on the command line.
109 [Steve Henson]
110
Dr. Stephen Hensone947f391999-11-16 00:56:03 +0000111 *) New function X509_cmp(). Oddly enough there wasn't a function
112 to compare two certificates. We do this by working out the SHA1
113 hash and comparing that. X509_cmp() will be needed by the trust
114 code.
115 [Steve Henson]
116
Mark J. Coxb7cfcfb1999-11-15 16:31:31 +0000117 *) Correctly increment the reference count in the SSL_SESSION pointer
118 returned from SSL_get_session().
119 [Geoff Thorpe <geoff@eu.c2.net>]
120
Dr. Stephen Henson06556a11999-11-14 23:10:50 +0000121 *) Fix for 'req': it was adding a null to request attributes.
122 Also change the X509_LOOKUP and X509_INFO code to handle
123 certificate auxiliary information.
124 [Steve Henson]
125
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +0000126 *) Add support for 40 and 64 bit RC2 and RC4 algorithms: document
127 the 'enc' command.
128 [Steve Henson]
129
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +0000130 *) Add the possibility to add extra information to the memory leak
131 detecting output, to form tracebacks, showing from where each
132 allocation was originated. Also updated sid code to be multi-
133 thread-safe.
134 [Richard Levitte]
135
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +0000136 *) Add options -text and -noout to pkcs7 utility and delete the
Dr. Stephen Henson954ef7e1999-11-12 01:42:25 +0000137 encryption options which never did anything. Update docs.
138 [Steve Henson]
139
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf298111999-11-11 18:41:31 +0000140 *) Add options to some of the utilities to allow the pass phrase
141 to be included on either the command line (not recommended on
142 OSes like Unix) or read from the environment. Update the
143 manpages and fix a few bugs.
144 [Steve Henson]
145
Dr. Stephen Hensonaba3e651999-11-10 02:52:17 +0000146 *) Add a few manpages for some of the openssl commands.
147 [Steve Henson]
148
Dr. Stephen Hensona0ad17b1999-11-08 13:58:08 +0000149 *) Fix the -revoke option in ca. It was freeing up memory twice,
150 leaking and not finding already revoked certificates.
151 [Steve Henson]
152
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +0000153 *) Extensive changes to support certificate auxiliary information.
154 This involves the use of X509_CERT_AUX structure and X509_AUX
155 functions. An X509_AUX function such as PEM_read_X509_AUX()
156 can still read in a certificate file in the usual way but it
157 will also read in any additional "auxiliary information". By
158 doing things this way a fair degree of compatability can be
159 retained: existing certificates can have this information added
160 using the new 'x509' options.
161
162 Current auxiliary information includes an "alias" and some trust
163 settings. The trust settings will ultimately be used in enhanced
164 certificate chain verification routines: currently a certificate
165 can only be trusted if it is self signed and then it is trusted
166 for all purposes.
167 [Steve Henson]
168
Mark J. Coxce2c95b1999-11-03 14:10:10 +0000169 *) Fix assembler for Alpha (tested only on DEC OSF not Linux or *BSD). The
170 problem was that one of the replacement routines had not been working since
171 SSLeay releases. For now the offending routine has been replaced with
172 non-optimised assembler. Even so, this now gives around 95% performance
173 improvement for 1024 bit RSA signs.
174 [Mark Cox]
175
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +0000176 *) Hack to fix PKCS#7 decryption when used with some unorthodox RC2
177 handling. Most clients have the effective key size in bits equal to
178 the key length in bits: so a 40 bit RC2 key uses a 40 bit (5 byte) key.
179 A few however don't do this and instead use the size of the decrypted key
180 to determine the RC2 key length and the AlgorithmIdentifier to determine
181 the effective key length. In this case the effective key lenth can still
182 be 40 bits but the key length can be 168 bits for example. This is fixed
183 by manually forcing an RC2 key into the EVP_PKEY structure because the
184 EVP code can't currently handle unusual RC2 key sizes: it always assumes
185 the key length and effective key length are equal.
186 [Steve Henson]
187
Dr. Stephen Henson74400f71999-10-27 00:15:11 +0000188 *) Add a bunch of functions that should simplify the creation of
189 X509_NAME structures. Now you should be able to do:
190 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, "CN", MBSTRING_ASC, "Steve", -1, -1, 0);
191 and have it automatically work out the correct field type and fill in
192 the structures. The more adventurous can try:
193 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, field, MBSTRING_UTF8, str, -1, -1, 0);
194 and it will (hopefully) work out the correct multibyte encoding.
195 [Steve Henson]
196
197 *) Change the 'req' utility to use the new field handling and multibyte
198 copy routines. Before the DN field creation was handled in an ad hoc
199 way in req, ca, and x509 which was rather broken and didn't support
200 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings. Since some software doesn't implement
201 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings yet, they can be enabled using the config file
202 using the dirstring_type option. See the new comment in the default
203 openssl.cnf for more info.
204 [Steve Henson]
205
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +0000206 *) Make crypto/rand/md_rand.c more robust:
Bodo Möller62ac2931999-10-26 16:26:48 +0000207 - Assure unique random numbers after fork().
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +0000208 - Make sure that concurrent threads access the global counter and
209 md serializably so that we never lose entropy in them
210 or use exactly the same state in multiple threads.
211 Access to the large state is not always serializable because
212 the additional locking could be a performance killer, and
213 md should be large enough anyway.
214 [Bodo Moeller]
215
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000216 *) New file apps/app_rand.c with commonly needed functionality
217 for handling the random seed file.
218
219 Use the random seed file in some applications that previously did not:
220 ca,
221 dsaparam -genkey (which also ignored its `-rand' option),
222 s_client,
223 s_server,
224 x509 (when signing).
225 Except on systems with /dev/urandom, it is crucial to have a random
226 seed file at least for key creation, DSA signing, and for DH exchanges;
Bodo Möller99e87561999-10-26 11:19:42 +0000227 for RSA signatures we could do without one.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000228
229 gendh and gendsa (unlike genrsa) used to read only the first byte
230 of each file listed in the `-rand' option. The function as previously
231 found in genrsa is now in app_rand.c and is used by all programs
232 that support `-rand'.
233 [Bodo Moeller]
234
235 *) In RAND_write_file, use mode 0600 for creating files;
236 don't just chmod when it may be too late.
237 [Bodo Moeller]
238
239 *) Report an error from X509_STORE_load_locations
240 when X509_LOOKUP_load_file or X509_LOOKUP_add_dir failed.
241 [Bill Perry]
242
Dr. Stephen Henson462f79e1999-10-21 13:20:49 +0000243 *) New function ASN1_mbstring_copy() this copies a string in either
244 ASCII, Unicode, Universal (4 bytes per character) or UTF8 format
245 into an ASN1_STRING type. A mask of permissible types is passed
246 and it chooses the "minimal" type to use or an error if not type
247 is suitable.
248 [Steve Henson]
249
Dr. Stephen Henson08e9c1a1999-10-20 01:50:23 +0000250 *) Add function equivalents to the various macros in asn1.h. The old
251 macros are retained with an M_ prefix. Code inside the library can
252 use the M_ macros. External code (including the openssl utility)
253 should *NOT* in order to be "shared library friendly".
254 [Steve Henson]
255
Dr. Stephen Henson673b1021999-10-13 01:11:56 +0000256 *) Add various functions that can check a certificate's extensions
257 to see if it usable for various purposes such as SSL client,
258 server or S/MIME and CAs of these types. This is currently
259 VERY EXPERIMENTAL but will ultimately be used for certificate chain
260 verification. Also added a -purpose flag to x509 utility to
261 print out all the purposes.
262 [Steve Henson]
263
Dr. Stephen Henson56a3fec1999-10-11 01:30:04 +0000264 *) Add a CRYPTO_EX_DATA to X509 certificate structure and associated
265 functions.
266 [Steve Henson]
267
Dr. Stephen Henson4654ef91999-10-09 02:54:10 +0000268 *) New X509V3_{X509,CRL,REVOKED}_get_d2i() functions. These will search
269 for, obtain and decode and extension and obtain its critical flag.
270 This allows all the necessary extension code to be handled in a
271 single function call.
272 [Steve Henson]
273
Andy Polyakov7e102e21999-10-07 12:10:26 +0000274 *) RC4 tune-up featuring 30-40% performance improvement on most RISC
275 platforms. See crypto/rc4/rc4_enc.c for further details.
276 [Andy Polyakov]
277
Dr. Stephen Hensond71c6bc1999-10-05 13:10:21 +0000278 *) New -noout option to asn1parse. This causes no output to be produced
279 its main use is when combined with -strparse and -out to extract data
280 from a file (which may not be in ASN.1 format).
281 [Steve Henson]
282
Dr. Stephen Henson2d681b71999-10-05 12:57:50 +0000283 *) Fix for pkcs12 program. It was hashing an invalid certificate pointer
284 when producing the local key id.
285 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
286
Dr. Stephen Henson3908cdf1999-10-04 23:56:06 +0000287 *) New option -dhparam in s_server. This allows a DH parameter file to be
288 stated explicitly. If it is not stated then it tries the first server
289 certificate file. The previous behaviour hard coded the filename
290 "server.pem".
291 [Steve Henson]
292
Dr. Stephen Henson3ea23631999-10-04 21:17:47 +0000293 *) Add -pubin and -pubout options to the rsa and dsa commands. These allow
294 a public key to be input or output. For example:
295 openssl rsa -in key.pem -pubout -out pubkey.pem
296 Also added necessary DSA public key functions to handle this.
297 [Steve Henson]
298
Dr. Stephen Henson393f2c61999-10-04 12:08:59 +0000299 *) Fix so PKCS7_dataVerify() doesn't crash if no certificates are contained
300 in the message. This was handled by allowing
301 X509_find_by_issuer_and_serial() to tolerate a NULL passed to it.
302 [Steve Henson, reported by Sampo Kellomaki <sampo@mail.neuronio.pt>]
303
304 *) Fix for bug in d2i_ASN1_bytes(): other ASN1 functions add an extra null
305 to the end of the strings whereas this didn't. This would cause problems
306 if strings read with d2i_ASN1_bytes() were later modified.
307 [Steve Henson, reported by Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
308
Dr. Stephen Henson4579dd51999-10-02 13:33:06 +0000309 *) Fix for base64 decode bug. When a base64 bio reads only one line of
310 data and it contains EOF it will end up returning an error. This is
311 caused by input 46 bytes long. The cause is due to the way base64
312 BIOs find the start of base64 encoded data. They do this by trying a
313 trial decode on each line until they find one that works. When they
314 do a flag is set and it starts again knowing it can pass all the
315 data directly through the decoder. Unfortunately it doesn't reset
316 the context it uses. This means that if EOF is reached an attempt
317 is made to pass two EOFs through the context and this causes the
318 resulting error. This can also cause other problems as well. As is
319 usual with these problems it takes *ages* to find and the fix is
320 trivial: move one line.
321 [Steve Henson, reported by ian@uns.ns.ac.yu (Ivan Nejgebauer) ]
322
Dr. Stephen Henson06f45361999-09-20 22:09:17 +0000323 *) Ugly workaround to get s_client and s_server working under Windows. The
324 old code wouldn't work because it needed to select() on sockets and the
325 tty (for keypresses and to see if data could be written). Win32 only
326 supports select() on sockets so we select() with a 1s timeout on the
327 sockets and then see if any characters are waiting to be read, if none
328 are present then we retry, we also assume we can always write data to
329 the tty. This isn't nice because the code then blocks until we've
330 received a complete line of data and it is effectively polling the
331 keyboard at 1s intervals: however it's quite a bit better than not
332 working at all :-) A dedicated Windows application might handle this
333 with an event loop for example.
334 [Steve Henson]
335
Dr. Stephen Henson1c800191999-09-18 22:37:44 +0000336 *) Enhance RSA_METHOD structure. Now there are two extra methods, rsa_sign
337 and rsa_verify. When the RSA_FLAGS_SIGN_VER option is set these functions
338 will be called when RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() are used. This is useful
339 if rsa_pub_dec() and rsa_priv_enc() equivalents are not available.
340 For this to work properly RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt()
341 should *not* be used: RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() must be used instead.
342 This necessitated the support of an extra signature type NID_md5_sha1
343 for SSL signatures and modifications to the SSL library to use it instead
344 of calling RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt().
345 [Steve Henson]
346
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +0000347 *) Add new -verify -CAfile and -CApath options to the crl program, these
348 will lookup a CRL issuers certificate and verify the signature in a
349 similar way to the verify program. Tidy up the crl program so it
350 no longer acesses structures directly. Make the ASN1 CRL parsing a bit
351 less strict. It will now permit CRL extensions even if it is not
352 a V2 CRL: this will allow it to tolerate some broken CRLs.
353 [Steve Henson]
354
Bodo Möller396f6311999-09-08 21:58:13 +0000355 *) Initialize all non-automatic variables each time one of the openssl
356 sub-programs is started (this is necessary as they may be started
357 multiple times from the "OpenSSL>" prompt).
358 [Lennart Bang, Bodo Moeller]
359
Dr. Stephen Henson4a61a641999-09-08 18:02:25 +0000360 *) Preliminary compilation option RSA_NULL which disables RSA crypto without
361 removing all other RSA functionality (this is what NO_RSA does). This
362 is so (for example) those in the US can disable those operations covered
363 by the RSA patent while allowing storage and parsing of RSA keys and RSA
364 key generation.
365 [Steve Henson]
366
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +0000367 *) Non-copying interface to BIO pairs.
Bodo Möller6f7af151999-09-10 14:03:21 +0000368 (still largely untested)
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +0000369 [Bodo Moeller]
370
Dr. Stephen Hensona785abc1999-09-07 12:16:29 +0000371 *) New function ANS1_tag2str() to convert an ASN1 tag to a descriptive
372 ASCII string. This was handled independently in various places before.
373 [Steve Henson]
374
Dr. Stephen Hensonaef838f1999-09-04 17:19:55 +0000375 *) New functions UTF8_getc() and UTF8_putc() that parse and generate
376 UTF8 strings a character at a time.
377 [Steve Henson]
378
Bodo Möller074309b1999-09-03 16:33:11 +0000379 *) Use client_version from client hello to select the protocol
380 (s23_srvr.c) and for RSA client key exchange verification
381 (s3_srvr.c), as required by the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 specifications.
382 [Bodo Moeller]
383
Dr. Stephen Henson8ce97161999-09-03 01:08:34 +0000384 *) Add various utility functions to handle SPKACs, these were previously
385 handled by poking round in the structure internals. Added new function
386 NETSCAPE_SPKI_print() to print out SPKAC and a new utility 'spkac' to
387 print, verify and generate SPKACs. Based on an original idea from
388 Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@comune.modena.it> but extensively modified.
389 [Steve Henson]
390
Andy Polyakov2d4287d1999-08-28 13:18:25 +0000391 *) RIPEMD160 is operational on all platforms and is back in 'make test'.
392 [Andy Polyakov]
393
Dr. Stephen Henson87a25f91999-08-27 00:08:17 +0000394 *) Allow the config file extension section to be overwritten on the
395 command line. Based on an original idea from Massimiliano Pala
396 <madwolf@comune.modena.it>. The new option is called -extensions
397 and can be applied to ca, req and x509. Also -reqexts to override
398 the request extensions in req and -crlexts to override the crl extensions
399 in ca.
400 [Steve Henson]
401
Dr. Stephen Hensonf9150e51999-08-25 23:18:23 +0000402 *) Add new feature to the SPKAC handling in ca. Now you can include
403 the same field multiple times by preceding it by "XXXX." for example:
404 1.OU="Unit name 1"
405 2.OU="Unit name 2"
406 this is the same syntax as used in the req config file.
407 [Steve Henson]
408
Dr. Stephen Hensonc79b16e1999-08-25 16:59:26 +0000409 *) Allow certificate extensions to be added to certificate requests. These
410 are specified in a 'req_extensions' option of the req section of the
411 config file. They can be printed out with the -text option to req but
412 are otherwise ignored at present.
413 [Steve Henson]
414
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000415 *) Fix a horrible bug in enc_read() in crypto/evp/bio_enc.c: if the first
Bodo Möller0f7e6fe1999-09-24 20:24:24 +0000416 data read consists of only the final block it would not decrypted because
Dr. Stephen Henson7b65c321999-08-24 13:21:35 +0000417 EVP_CipherUpdate() would correctly report zero bytes had been decrypted.
418 A misplaced 'break' also meant the decrypted final block might not be
419 copied until the next read.
420 [Steve Henson]
421
Dr. Stephen Henson13066ce1999-08-23 23:11:32 +0000422 *) Initial support for DH_METHOD. Again based on RSA_METHOD. Also added
423 a few extra parameters to the DH structure: these will be useful if
424 for example we want the value of 'q' or implement X9.42 DH.
425 [Steve Henson]
426
Dr. Stephen Hensonc0711f71999-08-22 17:57:38 +0000427 *) Initial support for DSA_METHOD. This is based on the RSA_METHOD and
428 provides hooks that allow the default DSA functions or functions on a
429 "per key" basis to be replaced. This allows hardware acceleration and
430 hardware key storage to be handled without major modification to the
431 library. Also added low level modexp hooks and CRYPTO_EX structure and
432 associated functions.
433 [Steve Henson]
434
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +0000435 *) Add a new flag to memory BIOs, BIO_FLAG_MEM_RDONLY. This marks the BIO
436 as "read only": it can't be written to and the buffer it points to will
437 not be freed. Reading from a read only BIO is much more efficient than
438 a normal memory BIO. This was added because there are several times when
439 an area of memory needs to be read from a BIO. The previous method was
440 to create a memory BIO and write the data to it, this results in two
441 copies of the data and an O(n^2) reading algorithm. There is a new
442 function BIO_new_mem_buf() which creates a read only memory BIO from
443 an area of memory. Also modified the PKCS#7 routines to use read only
444 memory BIOSs.
445 [Steve Henson]
446
Bodo Möllerde1915e1999-08-18 17:14:42 +0000447 *) Bugfix: ssl23_get_client_hello did not work properly when called in
448 state SSL23_ST_SR_CLNT_HELLO_B, i.e. when the first 7 bytes of
449 a SSLv2-compatible client hello for SSLv3 or TLSv1 could be read,
450 but a retry condition occured while trying to read the rest.
451 [Bodo Moeller]
452
Dr. Stephen Hensonc6c34501999-08-17 12:58:01 +0000453 *) The PKCS7_ENC_CONTENT_new() function was setting the content type as
454 NID_pkcs7_encrypted by default: this was wrong since this should almost
455 always be NID_pkcs7_data. Also modified the PKCS7_set_type() to handle
456 the encrypted data type: this is a more sensible place to put it and it
457 allows the PKCS#12 code to be tidied up that duplicated this
458 functionality.
459 [Steve Henson]
460
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +0000461 *) Changed obj_dat.pl script so it takes its input and output files on
462 the command line. This should avoid shell escape redirection problems
463 under Win32.
464 [Steve Henson]
465
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +0000466 *) Initial support for certificate extension requests, these are included
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +0000467 in things like Xenroll certificate requests. Included functions to allow
468 extensions to be obtained and added.
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +0000469 [Steve Henson]
470
Bodo Möller1b1a6e71999-08-09 13:01:48 +0000471 *) -crlf option to s_client and s_server for sending newlines as
472 CRLF (as required by many protocols).
473 [Bodo Moeller]
474
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +0000475 Changes between 0.9.3a and 0.9.4 [09 Aug 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +0000476
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +0000477 *) Install libRSAglue.a when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +0000478 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000479
Ralf S. Engelschall96395151999-08-08 10:15:43 +0000480 *) A few more ``#ifndef NO_FP_API / #endif'' pairs for consistency.
481 [Andrija Antonijevic <TheAntony2@bigfoot.com>]
482
Dr. Stephen Hensoned7f60f1999-08-06 21:47:09 +0000483 *) Fix -startdate and -enddate (which was missing) arguments to 'ca'
484 program.
485 [Steve Henson]
486
Bodo Möller48c843c1999-08-05 11:50:18 +0000487 *) New function DSA_dup_DH, which duplicates DSA parameters/keys as
488 DH parameters/keys (q is lost during that conversion, but the resulting
489 DH parameters contain its length).
490
491 For 1024-bit p, DSA_generate_parameters followed by DSA_dup_DH is
492 much faster than DH_generate_parameters (which creates parameters
493 where p = 2*q + 1), and also the smaller q makes DH computations
494 much more efficient (160-bit exponentiation instead of 1024-bit
495 exponentiation); so this provides a convenient way to support DHE
496 ciphersuites in SSL/TLS servers (see ssl/ssltest.c). It is of
497 utter importance to use
498 SSL_CTX_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
499 or
500 SSL_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
501 when such DH parameters are used, because otherwise small subgroup
502 attacks may become possible!
503 [Bodo Moeller]
504
505 *) Avoid memory leak in i2d_DHparams.
506 [Bodo Moeller]
507
Dr. Stephen Henson922180d1999-07-30 01:12:46 +0000508 *) Allow the -k option to be used more than once in the enc program:
509 this allows the same encrypted message to be read by multiple recipients.
510 [Steve Henson]
511
Dr. Stephen Henson3e3d2ea1999-07-27 22:22:58 +0000512 *) New function OBJ_obj2txt(buf, buf_len, a, no_name), this converts
513 an ASN1_OBJECT to a text string. If the "no_name" parameter is set then
514 it will always use the numerical form of the OID, even if it has a short
515 or long name.
516 [Steve Henson]
517
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +0000518 *) Added an extra RSA flag: RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY. Previously the rsa_mod_exp
519 method only got called if p,q,dmp1,dmq1,iqmp components were present,
520 otherwise bn_mod_exp was called. In the case of hardware keys for example
521 no private key components need be present and it might store extra data
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000522 in the RSA structure, which cannot be accessed from bn_mod_exp.
523 By setting RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY rsa_mod_exp will always be called for
524 private key operations.
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +0000525 [Steve Henson]
526
Andy Polyakova0618e31999-07-25 15:13:49 +0000527 *) Added support for SPARC Linux.
528 [Andy Polyakov]
529
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000530 *) pem_password_cb function type incompatibly changed from
531 typedef int pem_password_cb(char *buf, int size, int rwflag);
532 to
533 ....(char *buf, int size, int rwflag, void *userdata);
534 so that applications can pass data to their callbacks:
535 The PEM[_ASN1]_{read,write}... functions and macros now take an
536 additional void * argument, which is just handed through whenever
537 the password callback is called.
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000538 [Damien Miller <dmiller@ilogic.com.au>; tiny changes by Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000539
540 New function SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata.
541
542 Compatibility note: As many C implementations push function arguments
543 onto the stack in reverse order, the new library version is likely to
544 interoperate with programs that have been compiled with the old
545 pem_password_cb definition (PEM_whatever takes some data that
546 happens to be on the stack as its last argument, and the callback
547 just ignores this garbage); but there is no guarantee whatsoever that
548 this will work.
Bodo Möller0cceb1c1999-05-30 23:54:52 +0000549
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +0000550 *) The -DPLATFORM="\"$(PLATFORM)\"" definition and the similar -DCFLAGS=...
551 (both in crypto/Makefile.ssl for use by crypto/cversion.c) caused
552 problems not only on Windows, but also on some Unix platforms.
Bodo Möller2e0fc871999-07-27 09:10:36 +0000553 To avoid problematic command lines, these definitions are now in an
Bodo Möller57119941999-07-29 12:57:23 +0000554 auto-generated file crypto/buildinf.h (created by crypto/Makefile.ssl
555 for standard "make" builds, by util/mk1mf.pl for "mk1mf" builds).
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +0000556 [Bodo Moeller]
557
Andy Polyakov73634551999-07-20 15:50:20 +0000558 *) MIPS III/IV assembler module is reimplemented.
559 [Andy Polyakov]
560
Ulf Möller64344501999-07-16 00:50:45 +0000561 *) More DES library cleanups: remove references to srand/rand and
562 delete an unused file.
563 [Ulf Möller]
564
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +0000565 *) Add support for the the free Netwide assembler (NASM) under Win32,
566 since not many people have MASM (ml) and it can be hard to obtain.
567 This is currently experimental but it seems to work OK and pass all
568 the tests. Check out INSTALL.W32 for info.
569 [Steve Henson]
570
Bodo Möller50596581999-07-12 17:15:42 +0000571 *) Fix memory leaks in s3_clnt.c: All non-anonymous SSL3/TLS1 connections
572 without temporary keys kept an extra copy of the server key,
573 and connections with temporary keys did not free everything in case
574 of an error.
575 [Bodo Moeller]
576
Bodo Möller03cd4941999-07-11 22:00:55 +0000577 *) New function RSA_check_key and new openssl rsa option -check
578 for verifying the consistency of RSA keys.
579 [Ulf Moeller, Bodo Moeller]
580
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +0000581 *) Various changes to make Win32 compile work:
582 1. Casts to avoid "loss of data" warnings in p5_crpt2.c
583 2. Change unsigned int to int in b_dump.c to avoid "signed/unsigned
584 comparison" warnings.
585 3. Add sk_<TYPE>_sort to DEF file generator and do make update.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +0000586 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +0000587
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5139391999-07-11 12:40:46 +0000588 *) Add a debugging option to PKCS#5 v2 key generation function: when
589 you #define DEBUG_PKCS5V2 passwords, salts, iteration counts and
590 derived keys are printed to stderr.
591 [Steve Henson]
592
Dr. Stephen Henson0ab8beb1999-07-11 12:30:55 +0000593 *) Copy the flags in ASN1_STRING_dup().
594 [Roman E. Pavlov <pre@mo.msk.ru>]
595
Dr. Stephen Hensonf7daafa1999-07-11 01:48:21 +0000596 *) The x509 application mishandled signing requests containing DSA
597 keys when the signing key was also DSA and the parameters didn't match.
598
599 It was supposed to omit the parameters when they matched the signing key:
600 the verifying software was then supposed to automatically use the CA's
601 parameters if they were absent from the end user certificate.
602
603 Omitting parameters is no longer recommended. The test was also
604 the wrong way round! This was probably due to unusual behaviour in
605 EVP_cmp_parameters() which returns 1 if the parameters match.
606 This meant that parameters were omitted when they *didn't* match and
607 the certificate was useless. Certificates signed with 'ca' didn't have
608 this bug.
609 [Steve Henson, reported by Doug Erickson <Doug.Erickson@Part.NET>]
610
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +0000611 *) Memory leak checking (-DCRYPTO_MDEBUG) had some problems.
612 The interface is as follows:
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +0000613 Applications can use
614 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ON) aka MemCheck_start(),
615 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_OFF) aka MemCheck_stop();
616 "off" is now the default.
617 The library internally uses
618 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_DISABLE) aka MemCheck_off(),
619 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ENABLE) aka MemCheck_on()
620 to disable memory-checking temporarily.
621
622 Some inconsistent states that previously were possible (and were
623 even the default) are now avoided.
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +0000624
625 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_TIME is new and additionally stores the current time
626 with each memory chunk allocated; this is occasionally more helpful
627 than just having a counter.
Bodo Möllere3911161999-07-19 10:36:10 +0000628
629 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_THREAD is also new and adds the thread ID.
630
631 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_ALL enables all of the above, plus any future
632 extensions.
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +0000633 [Bodo Moeller]
634
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +0000635 *) Introduce "mode" for SSL structures (with defaults in SSL_CTX),
636 which largely parallels "options", but is for changing API behaviour,
637 whereas "options" are about protocol behaviour.
Bodo Möller9c962481999-07-19 12:59:12 +0000638 Initial "mode" flags are:
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +0000639
640 SSL_MODE_ENABLE_PARTIAL_WRITE Allow SSL_write to report success when
641 a single record has been written.
642 SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER Don't insist that SSL_write
643 retries use the same buffer location.
644 (But all of the contents must be
645 copied!)
646 [Bodo Moeller]
647
648 *) Bugfix: SSL_set_mode ignored its parameter, only SSL_CTX_set_mode
649 worked.
650
Ulf Möller5271ebd1999-06-30 00:42:56 +0000651 *) Fix problems with no-hmac etc.
652 [Ulf Möller, pointed out by Brian Wellington <bwelling@tislabs.com>]
653
Dr. Stephen Hensonce8b2571999-06-29 22:22:42 +0000654 *) New functions RSA_get_default_method(), RSA_set_method() and
655 RSA_get_method(). These allows replacement of RSA_METHODs without having
656 to mess around with the internals of an RSA structure.
657 [Steve Henson]
658
Bodo Möller9c729e01999-06-25 14:04:10 +0000659 *) Fix memory leaks in DSA_do_sign and DSA_is_prime.
660 Also really enable memory leak checks in openssl.c and in some
661 test programs.
662 [Chad C. Mulligan, Bodo Moeller]
663
Dr. Stephen Henson034292a1999-06-24 01:50:27 +0000664 *) Fix a bug in d2i_ASN1_INTEGER() and i2d_ASN1_INTEGER() which can mess
665 up the length of negative integers. This has now been simplified to just
666 store the length when it is first determined and use it later, rather
667 than trying to keep track of where data is copied and updating it to
668 point to the end.
669 [Steve Henson, reported by Brien Wheeler
670 <bwheeler@authentica-security.com>]
671
Dr. Stephen Henson170afce1999-06-22 13:33:22 +0000672 *) Add a new function PKCS7_signatureVerify. This allows the verification
673 of a PKCS#7 signature but with the signing certificate passed to the
674 function itself. This contrasts with PKCS7_dataVerify which assumes the
675 certificate is present in the PKCS#7 structure. This isn't always the
676 case: certificates can be omitted from a PKCS#7 structure and be
677 distributed by "out of band" means (such as a certificate database).
678 [Steve Henson]
679
Dr. Stephen Hensondbd665c1999-06-22 01:38:31 +0000680 *) Complete the PEM_* macros with DECLARE_PEM versions to replace the
681 function prototypes in pem.h, also change util/mkdef.pl to add the
682 necessary function names.
683 [Steve Henson]
684
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +0000685 *) mk1mf.pl (used by Windows builds) did not properly read the
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +0000686 options set by Configure in the top level Makefile, and Configure
Bodo Möller975d3dc1999-07-09 13:02:14 +0000687 was not even able to write more than one option correctly.
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +0000688 Fixed, now "no-idea no-rc5 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG" etc. works as intended.
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +0000689 [Bodo Moeller]
690
Dr. Stephen Henson8623f691999-06-20 17:36:11 +0000691 *) New functions CONF_load_bio() and CONF_load_fp() to allow a config
692 file to be loaded from a BIO or FILE pointer. The BIO version will
693 for example allow memory BIOs to contain config info.
694 [Steve Henson]
695
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +0000696 *) New function "CRYPTO_num_locks" that returns CRYPTO_NUM_LOCKS.
697 Whoever hopes to achieve shared-library compatibility across versions
698 must use this, not the compile-time macro.
Bodo Möller11af1a21999-06-18 18:22:38 +0000699 (Exercise 0.9.4: Which is the minimum library version required by
700 such programs?)
701 Note: All this applies only to multi-threaded programs, others don't
702 need locks.
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +0000703 [Bodo Moeller]
704
Bodo Möller95d29591999-06-12 01:03:40 +0000705 *) Add missing case to s3_clnt.c state machine -- one of the new SSL tests
706 through a BIO pair triggered the default case, i.e.
707 SSLerr(...,SSL_R_UNKNOWN_STATE).
708 [Bodo Moeller]
709
710 *) New "BIO pair" concept (crypto/bio/bss_bio.c) so that applications
711 can use the SSL library even if none of the specific BIOs is
712 appropriate.
713 [Bodo Moeller]
714
Dr. Stephen Henson9bce3071999-06-11 22:30:45 +0000715 *) Fix a bug in i2d_DSAPublicKey() which meant it returned the wrong value
716 for the encoded length.
717 [Jeon KyoungHo <khjeon@sds.samsung.co.kr>]
718
Dr. Stephen Henson565d1061999-06-11 01:58:42 +0000719 *) Add initial documentation of the X509V3 functions.
720 [Steve Henson]
721
Dr. Stephen Hensonb7d135b1999-06-10 17:32:52 +0000722 *) Add a new pair of functions PEM_write_PKCS8PrivateKey() and
723 PEM_write_bio_PKCS8PrivateKey() that are equivalent to
724 PEM_write_PrivateKey() and PEM_write_bio_PrivateKey() but use the more
725 secure PKCS#8 private key format with a high iteration count.
726 [Steve Henson]
727
Ralf S. Engelschall9d9b5591999-06-10 08:13:52 +0000728 *) Fix determination of Perl interpreter: A perl or perl5
729 _directory_ in $PATH was also accepted as the interpreter.
730 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
731
Dr. Stephen Henson5f6d0ea1999-06-09 23:33:48 +0000732 *) Fix demos/sign/sign.c: well there wasn't anything strictly speaking
733 wrong with it but it was very old and did things like calling
734 PEM_ASN1_read() directly and used MD5 for the hash not to mention some
735 unusual formatting.
736 [Steve Henson]
737
Dr. Stephen Hensonf62676b1999-06-09 18:05:30 +0000738 *) Fix demos/selfsign.c: it used obsolete and deleted functions, changed
739 to use the new extension code.
740 [Steve Henson]
741
742 *) Implement the PEM_read/PEM_write functions in crypto/pem/pem_all.c
743 with macros. This should make it easier to change their form, add extra
744 arguments etc. Fix a few PEM prototypes which didn't have cipher as a
745 constant.
746 [Steve Henson]
747
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +0000748 *) Add to configuration table a new entry that can specify an alternative

750 according to Mark Crispin <MRC@Panda.COM>.

765 on without noticing the failure. Fixed.
766 [Ben Laurie]
767
Ulf Möller908eb7b1999-06-08 16:35:11 +0000768 *) DES library cleanups.
769 [Ulf Möller]
770
Dr. Stephen Henson8eb57af1999-06-08 00:09:51 +0000771 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 PBE algorithms. This will permit PKCS#8 to be
772 used with any cipher unlike PKCS#5 v1.5 which can at most handle 64 bit
773 ciphers. NOTE: although the key derivation function has been verified
774 against some published test vectors it has not been extensively tested
775 yet. Added a -v2 "cipher" option to pkcs8 application to allow the use
776 of v2.0.

Dr. Stephen Henson69cbf461999-06-06 13:07:13 +0000783 *) Rewrite the way password based encryption (PBE) is handled. It used to
784 assume that the ASN1 AlgorithmIdentifier parameter was a PBEParameter
785 structure. This was true for the PKCS#5 v1.5 and PKCS#12 PBE algorithms
786 but doesn't apply to PKCS#5 v2.0 where it can be something else. Now
787 the 'parameter' field of the AlgorithmIdentifier is passed to the
788 underlying key generation function so it must do its own ASN1 parsing.
789 This has also changed the EVP_PBE_CipherInit() function which now has a
790 'parameter' argument instead of literal salt and iteration count values
791 and the function EVP_PBE_ALGOR_CipherInit() has been deleted.
792 [Steve Henson]
793
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +0000794 *) Support for PKCS#5 v1.5 compatible password based encryption algorithms
Dr. Stephen Hensone7871ff1999-06-05 12:39:10 +0000795 and PKCS#8 functionality. New 'pkcs8' application linked to openssl.
796 Needed to change the PEM_STRING_EVP_PKEY value which was just "PRIVATE
797 KEY" because this clashed with PKCS#8 unencrypted string. Since this
798 value was just used as a "magic string" and not used directly its
799 value doesn't matter.

Ulf Möllere14d4441999-05-20 01:43:07 +0000863 *) Bignum library bug fix. IRIX 6 passes "make test" now!

865 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
866
Dr. Stephen Hensone84240d1999-05-19 12:45:16 +0000867 *) New functions sk_num, sk_value and sk_set to replace the previous macros.
868 These are required because of the typesafe stack would otherwise break
869 existing code. If old code used a structure member which used to be STACK
870 and is now STACK_OF (for example cert in a PKCS7_SIGNED structure) with
871 sk_num or sk_value it would produce an error because the num, data members
872 are not present in STACK_OF. Now it just produces a warning. sk_set
873 replaces the old method of assigning a value to sk_value
874 (e.g. sk_value(x, i) = y) which the library used in a few cases. Any code
875 that does this will no longer work (and should use sk_set instead) but
876 this could be regarded as a "questionable" behaviour anyway.
877 [Steve Henson]
878
Dr. Stephen Henson1b266da1999-05-16 17:32:32 +0000879 *) Fix most of the other PKCS#7 bugs. The "experimental" code can now

881 [Steve Henson]
882
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +0000883 *) Change type of various DES function arguments from des_cblock
Bodo Möllerf43c8141999-05-16 14:20:17 +0000884 (which means, in function argument declarations, pointer to char)
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +0000885 to des_cblock * (meaning pointer to array with 8 char elements),
886 which allows the compiler to do more typechecking; it was like
887 that back in SSLeay, but with lots of ugly casts.
888
889 Introduce new type const_des_cblock.
890 [Bodo Moeller]
891
Dr. Stephen Henson84fa7041999-05-16 00:25:36 +0000892 *) Reorganise the PKCS#7 library and get rid of some of the more obvious
893 problems: find RecipientInfo structure that matches recipient certificate
894 and initialise the ASN1 structures properly based on passed cipher.
895 [Steve Henson]
896
Ben Laurie62bad771999-05-15 15:59:28 +0000897 *) Belatedly make the BN tests actually check the results.
898 [Ben Laurie]
899
Dr. Stephen Henson1ad2ecb1999-05-14 18:21:21 +0000900 *) Fix the encoding and decoding of negative ASN1 INTEGERS and conversion
901 to and from BNs: it was completely broken. New compilation option
902 NEG_PUBKEY_BUG to allow for some broken certificates that encode public
903 key elements as negative integers.
904 [Steve Henson]
905
Ulf Möllerbd3576d1999-05-13 13:16:42 +0000906 *) Reorganize and speed up MD5.
907 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
908
Ulf Möller7d7d2cb1999-05-13 11:37:32 +0000909 *) VMS support.
910 [Richard Levitte <richard@levitte.org>]
911
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5eac851999-05-12 01:56:27 +0000912 *) New option -out to asn1parse to allow the parsed structure to be
913 output to a file. This is most useful when combined with the -strparse
914 option to examine the output of things like OCTET STRINGS.
915 [Steve Henson]
916
Bodo Möllerb31b04d1999-05-11 07:43:16 +0000917 *) Make SSL library a little more fool-proof by not requiring any longer
918 that SSL_set_{accept,connect}_state be called before
919 SSL_{accept,connect} may be used (SSL_set_..._state is omitted
920 in many applications because usually everything *appeared* to work as
921 intended anyway -- now it really works as intended).
922 [Bodo Moeller]
923
Ulf Möllerd5a2ea41999-05-10 23:59:28 +0000924 *) Move openssl.cnf out of lib/.
925 [Ulf Möller]
926
Ralf S. Engelschall397f7031999-05-10 08:33:56 +0000927 *) Fix various things to let OpenSSL even pass ``egcc -pipe -O2 -Wall
928 -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wmissing-prototypes
929 -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Winline'' with EGCS 1.1.2+
930 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
931
Dr. Stephen Henson884e8ec1999-05-10 00:47:42 +0000932 *) Various fixes to the EVP and PKCS#7 code. It may now be able to
933 handle PKCS#7 enveloped data properly.
934 [Sebastian Akerman <sak@parallelconsulting.com>, modified by Steve]
935
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +0000936 *) Create a duplicate of the SSL_CTX's CERT in SSL_new instead of
937 copying pointers. The cert_st handling is changed by this in
938 various ways (and thus what used to be known as ctx->default_cert
939 is now called ctx->cert, since we don't resort to s->ctx->[default_]cert
940 any longer when s->cert does not give us what we need).
941 ssl_cert_instantiate becomes obsolete by this change.
942 As soon as we've got the new code right (possibly it already is?),
943 we have solved a couple of bugs of the earlier code where s->cert
944 was used as if it could not have been shared with other SSL structures.
945
946 Note that using the SSL API in certain dirty ways now will result
947 in different behaviour than observed with earlier library versions:
948 Changing settings for an SSL_CTX *ctx after having done s = SSL_new(ctx)
949 does not influence s as it used to.
950
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +0000951 In order to clean up things more thoroughly, inside SSL_SESSION
Bodo Möllerb56bce41999-05-13 15:09:38 +0000952 we don't use CERT any longer, but a new structure SESS_CERT
953 that holds per-session data (if available); currently, this is
954 the peer's certificate chain and, for clients, the server's certificate
955 and temporary key. CERT holds only those values that can have
956 meaningful defaults in an SSL_CTX.
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +0000957 [Bodo Moeller]
958
Dr. Stephen Hensonc8b41851999-05-09 16:39:11 +0000959 *) New function X509V3_EXT_i2d() to create an X509_EXTENSION structure
960 from the internal representation. Various PKCS#7 fixes: remove some
961 evil casts and set the enc_dig_alg field properly based on the signing
962 key type.
963 [Steve Henson]
964
Dr. Stephen Hensone40b7ab1999-05-08 12:59:50 +0000965 *) Allow PKCS#12 password to be set from the command line or the
966 environment. Let 'ca' get its config file name from the environment
967 variables "OPENSSL_CONF" or "SSLEAY_CONF" (for consistency with 'req'
968 and 'x509').
969 [Steve Henson]
970
971 *) Allow certificate policies extension to use an IA5STRING for the
972 organization field. This is contrary to the PKIX definition but
973 VeriSign uses it and IE5 only recognises this form. Document 'x509'
974 extension option.
975 [Steve Henson]
976
Ben Laurie5b640021999-05-07 15:42:23 +0000977 *) Add PEDANTIC compiler flag to allow compilation with gcc -pedantic,
978 without disallowing inline assembler and the like for non-pedantic builds.
979 [Ben Laurie]
980
Ulf Möller31a674d1999-05-06 00:46:34 +0000981 *) Support Borland C++ builder.
982 [Janez Jere <jj@void.si>, modified by Ulf Möller]
983
984 *) Support Mingw32.
985 [Ulf Möller]
986
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +0000987 *) SHA-1 cleanups and performance enhancements.

Ulf Möllerafd1f9e1999-05-04 11:52:26 +0000993 *) Accept any -xxx and +xxx compiler options in Configure.
994 [Ulf Möller]
995
996 *) Update HPUX configuration.
997 [Anonymous]
998
Ralf S. Engelschalldee75ec1999-05-04 10:15:02 +0000999 *) Add missing sk_<type>_unshift() function to safestack.h
1000 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1001
Bodo Möllerb3ca6451999-05-01 17:43:52 +00001002 *) New function SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file that sets the
1003 "extra_cert"s in addition to the certificate. (This makes sense
1004 only for "PEM" format files, as chains as a whole are not
1005 DER-encoded.)
1006 [Bodo Moeller]
1007
Bodo Möller7f897141999-05-01 03:20:40 +00001008 *) Support verify_depth from the SSL API.
1009 x509_vfy.c had what can be considered an off-by-one-error:
1010 Its depth (which was not part of the external interface)
1011 was actually counting the number of certificates in a chain;
1012 now it really counts the depth.
1013 [Bodo Moeller]
1014
Bodo Möllerdc1f6071999-05-01 20:16:35 +00001015 *) Bugfix in crypto/x509/x509_cmp.c: The SSLerr macro was used
1016 instead of X509err, which often resulted in confusing error
1017 messages since the error codes are not globally unique
1018 (e.g. an alleged error in ssl3_accept when a certificate
1019 didn't match the private key).
1020
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00001021 *) New function SSL_CTX_set_session_id_context that allows to set a default
Bodo Möllerdd1462f1999-05-01 00:07:42 +00001022 value (so that you don't need SSL_set_session_id_context for each

1025
Ulf Möllerc6652741999-04-29 21:56:13 +00001026 *) OAEP decoding bug fix.
1027 [Ulf Möller]
1028
Bodo Möllere5f30451999-04-29 21:52:08 +00001029 *) Support INSTALL_PREFIX for package builders, as proposed by
1030 David Harris.
1031 [Bodo Moeller]
1032
Bodo Möller87bc2c01999-04-29 16:10:41 +00001033 *) New Configure options "threads" and "no-threads". For systems
1034 where the proper compiler options are known (currently Solaris
1035 and Linux), "threads" is the default.
1036 [Bodo Moeller]
1037
Bodo Möller6e6acfd1999-04-28 22:33:54 +00001038 *) New script util/mklink.pl as a faster substitute for util/mklink.sh.
1039 [Bodo Moeller]
1040
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00001041 *) Install various scripts to $(OPENSSLDIR)/misc, not to
1042 $(INSTALLTOP)/bin -- they shouldn't clutter directories
1043 such as /usr/local/bin.
1044 [Bodo Moeller]
1045
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00001046 *) "make linux-shared" to build shared libraries.

Ulf Möllerf5d7a031999-04-27 01:14:46 +00001049 *) New Configure option no-<cipher> (rsa, idea, rc5, ...).
1050 [Ulf Möller]
1051
Dr. Stephen Hensonb64f8251999-04-27 00:36:20 +00001052 *) Add the PKCS#12 API documentation to openssl.txt. Preliminary support for
1053 extension adding in x509 utility.
1054 [Steve Henson]
1055
Ulf Möllera9be3af1999-04-26 16:43:10 +00001056 *) Remove NOPROTO sections and error code comments.
1057 [Ulf Möller]
1058
Dr. Stephen Henson47339f61999-04-26 00:23:10 +00001059 *) Partial rewrite of the DEF file generator to now parse the ANSI
1060 prototypes.
1061 [Steve Henson]
1062
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00001063 *) New Configure options --prefix=DIR and --openssldir=DIR.
Ulf Möller9c4711c1999-04-24 23:39:52 +00001064 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00001065
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00001066 *) Complete rewrite of the error code script(s). It is all now handled
1067 by one script at the top level which handles error code gathering,
1068 header rewriting and C source file generation. It should be much better
1069 than the old method: it now uses a modified version of Ulf's parser to
1070 read the ANSI prototypes in all header files (thus the old K&R definitions
1071 aren't needed for error creation any more) and do a better job of
1072 translating function codes into names. The old 'ASN1 error code imbedded
1073 in a comment' is no longer necessary and it doesn't use .err files which
Dr. Stephen Henson6e781e81999-04-24 13:28:57 +00001074 have now been deleted. Also the error code call doesn't have to appear all
1075 on one line (which resulted in some large lines...).
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00001076 [Steve Henson]
1077
Bodo Möller018b4ee1999-04-23 22:38:22 +00001078 *) Change #include filenames from <foo.h> to <openssl/foo.h>.
Bodo Möller92df9601999-04-23 22:20:21 +00001079 [Bodo Moeller]
1080
Bodo Möller85f48f71999-04-22 14:28:38 +00001081 *) Change behaviour of ssl2_read when facing length-0 packets: Don't return
1082 0 (which usually indicates a closed connection), but continue reading.
1083 [Bodo Moeller]
1084
Bodo Möller90b8bbb1999-04-22 13:38:03 +00001085 *) Fix some race conditions.
1086 [Bodo Moeller]
1087
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00001088 *) Add support for CRL distribution points extension. Add Certificate
1089 Policies and CRL distribution points documentation.
1090 [Steve Henson]
1091
Ulf Möller8e10f2b1999-04-21 17:31:05 +00001092 *) Move the autogenerated header file parts to crypto/opensslconf.h.
1093 [Ulf Möller]
1094
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00001095 *) Fix new 56-bit DES export ciphersuites: they were using 7 bytes instead of
1096 8 of keying material. Merlin has also confirmed interop with this fix
1097 between OpenSSL and Baltimore C/SSL 2.0 and J/SSL 2.0.
1098 [Merlin Hughes <merlin@baltimore.ie>]
1099
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00001100 *) Fix lots of warnings.
1101 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1102
1103 *) In add_cert_dir() in crypto/x509/by_dir.c, break out of the loop if
1104 the directory spec didn't end with a LIST_SEPARATOR_CHAR.
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00001105 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]

1111 [Ulf Möller]
1112
Ulf Möllerdf82f5c1999-04-19 14:45:02 +00001113 *) Fix typos in error codes.

1117 [Ulf Möller]
1118
Ulf Möller5e85b6a1999-04-19 13:41:45 +00001119 *) SPARC v8 assembler BIGNUM implementation.
1120 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1121
Dr. Stephen Henson3edd7ed1999-04-19 17:55:11 +00001122 *) Support for Certificate Policies extension: both print and set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00001123 Various additions to support the r2i method this uses.
Dr. Stephen Henson41b731f1999-04-18 23:21:03 +00001124 [Steve Henson]
1125
Ben Lauriee7788021999-04-17 21:25:43 +00001126 *) A lot of constification, and fix a bug in X509_NAME_oneline() that could
1127 return a const string when you are expecting an allocated buffer.
1128 [Ben Laurie]
1129
Dr. Stephen Hensonc83e5231999-04-17 23:55:39 +00001130 *) Add support for ASN1 types UTF8String and VISIBLESTRING, also the CHOICE
1131 types DirectoryString and DisplayText.
Dr. Stephen Hensond77b3051999-04-17 15:53:32 +00001132 [Steve Henson]
1133
Dr. Stephen Henson1d48dd01999-04-16 23:57:04 +00001134 *) Add code to allow r2i extensions to access the configuration database,
1135 add an LHASH database driver and add several ctx helper functions.
1136 [Steve Henson]
1137
Dr. Stephen Henson953937b1999-04-15 23:07:00 +00001138 *) Fix an evil bug in bn_expand2() which caused various BN functions to
1139 fail when they extended the size of a BIGNUM.
1140 [Steve Henson]
1141
Dr. Stephen Henson28a98801999-04-14 23:44:41 +00001142 *) Various utility functions to handle SXNet extension. Modify mkdef.pl to
1143 support typesafe stack.
1144 [Steve Henson]
1145
Ben Laurie8f7de4f1999-04-14 11:13:47 +00001146 *) Fix typo in SSL_[gs]et_options().
1147 [Nils Frostberg <nils@medcom.se>]
1148
Dr. Stephen Henson0490a861999-04-13 23:56:39 +00001149 *) Delete various functions and files that belonged to the (now obsolete)
1150 old X509V3 handling code.
1151 [Steve Henson]
1152
Ulf Möller5fbe91d1999-04-13 00:58:49 +00001153 *) New Configure option "rsaref".
1154 [Ulf Möller]
1155
Bodo Möller5fd4e2b1999-04-12 19:58:17 +00001156 *) Don't auto-generate pem.h.

1160 [Ben Laurie]
1161
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00001162 *) Convert various additional casted stacks to type-safe STACK_OF() variants.
Ben Laurie135a1dc1999-05-07 09:18:25 +00001163 [Ben Laurie, Ralf S. Engelschall, Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00001164
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00001165 *) Introduce type-safe STACKs. This will almost certainly break lots of code
1166 that links with OpenSSL (well at least cause lots of warnings), but fear
1167 not: the conversion is trivial, and it eliminates loads of evil casts. A
1168 few STACKed things have been converted already. Feel free to convert more.
1169 In the fullness of time, I'll do away with the STACK type altogether.
1170 [Ben Laurie]
1171
Ralf S. Engelschallf9a25931999-04-12 11:45:14 +00001172 *) Add `openssl ca -revoke <certfile>' facility which revokes a certificate
1173 specified in <certfile> by updating the entry in the index.txt file.
1174 This way one no longer has to edit the index.txt file manually for
1175 revoking a certificate. The -revoke option does the gory details now.
1176 [Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@openca.org>, Ralf S. Engelschall]
1177
Ralf S. Engelschall2f0cd191999-04-12 10:36:16 +00001178 *) Fix `openssl crl -noout -text' combination where `-noout' killed the
1179 `-text' option at all and this way the `-noout -text' combination was
1180 inconsistent in `openssl crl' with the friends in `openssl x509|rsa|dsa'.
1181 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1182
Ralf S. Engelschall268c2101999-04-12 09:59:05 +00001183 *) Make sure a corresponding plain text error message exists for the
1184 X509_V_ERR_CERT_REVOKED/23 error number which can occur when a
1185 verify callback function determined that a certificate was revoked.
1186 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1187
Bodo Möllerfc8ee061999-04-11 02:49:35 +00001188 *) Bugfix: In test/testenc, don't test "openssl <cipher>" for
1189 ciphers that were excluded, e.g. by -DNO_IDEA. Also, test
1190 all available cipers including rc5, which was forgotten until now.
1191 In order to let the testing shell script know which algorithms
1192 are available, a new (up to now undocumented) command
1193 "openssl list-cipher-commands" is used.
1194 [Bodo Moeller]
1195
Bodo Möllerc7ac31e1999-04-09 20:54:25 +00001196 *) Bugfix: s_client occasionally would sleep in select() when
1197 it should have checked SSL_pending() first.
1198 [Bodo Moeller]
1199
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00001200 *) New functions DSA_do_sign and DSA_do_verify to provide access to
1201 the raw DSA values prior to ASN.1 encoding.
1202 [Ulf Möller]
1203
1204 *) Tweaks to Configure
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00001205 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00001206
Dr. Stephen Hensond2e26dc1999-04-08 23:55:42 +00001207 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 ASN1 PBES2 structures. No other support,
1208 yet...
1209 [Steve Henson]
1210
Ulf Möller99aab161999-04-01 12:34:33 +00001211 *) New variables $(RANLIB) and $(PERL) in the Makefiles.
1212 [Ulf Möller]
1213
Ulf Möller2613c1f1999-03-31 12:38:27 +00001214 *) New config option to avoid instructions that are illegal on the 80386.
1215 The default code is faster, but requires at least a 486.
1216 [Ulf Möller]
1217
Bodo Möller6d02d8e1999-03-31 12:06:30 +00001218 *) Got rid of old SSL2_CLIENT_VERSION (inconsistently used) and
1219 SSL2_SERVER_VERSION (not used at all) macros, which are now the
1220 same as SSL2_VERSION anyway.
1221 [Bodo Moeller]
1222
1223 *) New "-showcerts" option for s_client.
1224 [Bodo Moeller]
1225
Dr. Stephen Hensonee0508d1999-03-29 17:50:26 +00001226 *) Still more PKCS#12 integration. Add pkcs12 application to openssl
1227 application. Various cleanups and fixes.
1228 [Steve Henson]
1229
Dr. Stephen Henson8d8c7261999-03-28 23:17:34 +00001230 *) More PKCS#12 integration. Add new pkcs12 directory with Makefile.ssl and
1231 modify error routines to work internally. Add error codes and PBE init
1232 to library startup routines.
1233 [Steve Henson]
1234
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00001235 *) Further PKCS#12 integration. Added password based encryption, PKCS#8 and
1236 packing functions to asn1 and evp. Changed function names and error
1237 codes along the way.
1238 [Steve Henson]
1239
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00001240 *) PKCS12 integration: and so it begins... First of several patches to
1241 slowly integrate PKCS#12 functionality into OpenSSL. Add PKCS#12
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00001242 objects to objects.h
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00001243 [Steve Henson]
1244
Dr. Stephen Henson785cdf21999-03-27 14:06:25 +00001245 *) Add a new 'indent' option to some X509V3 extension code. Initial ASN1
1246 and display support for Thawte strong extranet extension.
1247 [Steve Henson]
1248
Ben Laurieba423ad1999-03-27 13:03:37 +00001249 *) Add LinuxPPC support.
1250 [Jeff Dubrule <igor@pobox.org>]
1251
Ben Laurie67da3df1999-03-27 12:53:21 +00001252 *) Get rid of redundant BN file bn_mulw.c, and rename bn_div64 to
1253 bn_div_words in alpha.s.
1254 [Hannes Reinecke <H.Reinecke@hw.ac.uk> and Ben Laurie]
1255
Ralf S. Engelschall0e9fc711999-03-25 07:49:33 +00001256 *) Make sure the RSA OAEP test is skipped under -DRSAref because
1257 OAEP isn't supported when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
1258 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1259
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00001260 *) Move definitions of IS_SET/IS_SEQUENCE inside crypto/asn1/asn1.h
1261 so they no longer are missing under -DNOPROTO.
1262 [Soren S. Jorvang <soren@t.dk>]
1263
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00001264
1265 Changes between 0.9.1c and 0.9.2b [22 Mar 1999]
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00001266
Ben Laurieb4cadc61999-03-22 12:22:14 +00001267 *) Make SSL_get_peer_cert_chain() work in servers. Unfortunately, it still
1268 doesn't work when the session is reused. Coming soon!
1269 [Ben Laurie]
1270
1271 *) Fix a security hole, that allows sessions to be reused in the wrong
1272 context thus bypassing client cert protection! All software that uses
1273 client certs and session caches in multiple contexts NEEDS PATCHING to
1274 allow session reuse! A fuller solution is in the works.
1275 [Ben Laurie, problem pointed out by Holger Reif, Bodo Moeller (and ???)]
1276
Ralf S. Engelschallafb23061999-03-20 13:04:12 +00001277 *) Some more source tree cleanups (removed obsolete files
1278 crypto/bf/asm/bf586.pl, test/test.txt and crypto/sha/asm/f.s; changed
1279 permission on "config" script to be executable) and a fix for the INSTALL
1280 document.
1281 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1282
Dr. Stephen Henson199d59e1999-03-14 01:16:45 +00001283 *) Remove some legacy and erroneous uses of malloc, free instead of
1284 Malloc, Free.
1285 [Lennart Bang <lob@netstream.se>, with minor changes by Steve]
1286
Ben Laurieb4899bb1999-03-12 20:41:09 +00001287 *) Make rsa_oaep_test return non-zero on error.
1288 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1289
Ben Laurie29c0fcc1999-03-12 20:26:27 +00001290 *) Add support for native Solaris shared libraries. Configure
1291 solaris-sparc-sc4-pic, make, then run shlib/solaris-sc4.sh. It'd be nice
1292 if someone would make that last step automatic.
1293 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@AdNovum.CH>]
1294
Ben Lauriecadf1261999-03-12 19:58:43 +00001295 *) ctx_size was not built with the right compiler during "make links". Fixed.
1296 [Ben Laurie]
1297
Dr. Stephen Hensonbc420ac1999-03-12 01:43:28 +00001298 *) Change the meaning of 'ALL' in the cipher list. It now means "everything
1299 except NULL ciphers". This means the default cipher list will no longer
1300 enable NULL ciphers. They need to be specifically enabled e.g. with
1301 the string "DEFAULT:eNULL".
1302 [Steve Henson]
1303
Dr. Stephen Hensonabd4c911999-03-11 02:42:13 +00001304 *) Fix to RSA private encryption routines: if p < q then it would
1305 occasionally produce an invalid result. This will only happen with
1306 externally generated keys because OpenSSL (and SSLeay) ensure p > q.
1307 [Steve Henson]
1308
Ralf S. Engelschall7e37e721999-03-10 19:57:05 +00001309 *) Be less restrictive and allow also `perl util/perlpath.pl
1310 /path/to/bin/perl' in addition to `perl util/perlpath.pl /path/to/bin',
1311 because this way one can also use an interpreter named `perl5' (which is
1312 usually the name of Perl 5.xxx on platforms where an Perl 4.x is still
1313 installed as `perl').
1314 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1315
Ralf S. Engelschall637691e1999-03-10 19:51:43 +00001316 *) Let util/clean-depend.pl work also with older Perl 5.00x versions.
1317 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1318
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00001319 *) Fix Makefile.org so CC,CFLAG etc are passed to 'make links' add
1320 advapi32.lib to Win32 build and change the pem test comparision
1321 to fc.exe (thanks to Ulrich Kroener <kroneru@yahoo.com> for the
Dr. Stephen Henson38138021999-03-10 18:30:48 +00001322 suggestion). Fix misplaced ASNI prototypes and declarations in evp.h
1323 and crypto/des/ede_cbcm_enc.c.
1324 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00001325
Ben Laurieb241fef1999-03-09 11:37:23 +00001326 *) DES quad checksum was broken on big-endian architectures. Fixed.
1327 [Ben Laurie]
1328
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001329 *) Comment out two functions in bio.h that aren't implemented. Fix up the
1330 Win32 test batch file so it (might) work again. The Win32 test batch file
1331 is horrible: I feel ill....
1332 [Steve Henson]
1333
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00001334 *) Move various #ifdefs around so NO_SYSLOG, NO_DIRENT etc are now selected
1335 in e_os.h. Audit of header files to check ANSI and non ANSI
1336 sections: 10 functions were absent from non ANSI section and not exported
1337 from Windows DLLs. Fixed up libeay.num for new functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001338 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00001339
Ralf S. Engelschalld10f0521999-03-08 12:35:01 +00001340 *) Make `openssl version' output lines consistent.
1341 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1342
Ralf S. Engelschallc0e538e1999-03-08 11:41:26 +00001343 *) Fix Win32 symbol export lists for BIO functions: Added
1344 BIO_get_ex_new_index, BIO_get_ex_num, BIO_get_ex_data and BIO_set_ex_data
1345 to ms/libeay{16,32}.def.
1346 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1347
Ralf S. Engelschall84107e61999-03-08 11:25:49 +00001348 *) Second round of fixing the OpenSSL perl/ stuff. It now at least compiled
1349 fine under Unix and passes some trivial tests I've now added. But the
1350 whole stuff is horribly incomplete, so a README.1ST with a disclaimer was
1351 added to make sure no one expects that this stuff really works in the
1352 OpenSSL 0.9.2 release. Additionally I've started to clean the XS sources
1353 up and fixed a few little bugs and inconsistencies in OpenSSL.{pm,xs} and
1354 openssl_bio.xs.
1355 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1356
Ben Laurie26a08461999-03-07 15:08:38 +00001357 *) Fix the generation of two part addresses in perl.
1358 [Kenji Miyake <kenji@miyake.org>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
1359
Ben Laurie7d3ce7b1999-03-07 14:17:32 +00001360 *) Add config entry for Linux on MIPS.
1361 [John Tobey <jtobey@channel1.com>]
1362
Ben Laurieefadf601999-03-07 15:21:08 +00001363 *) Make links whenever Configure is run, unless we are on Windoze.
Ben Lauriecba50681999-03-07 14:05:36 +00001364 [Ben Laurie]
1365
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00001366 *) Permit extensions to be added to CRLs using crl_section in openssl.cnf.
1367 Currently only issuerAltName and AuthorityKeyIdentifier make any sense
1368 in CRLs.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001369 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00001370
Ralf S. Engelschall116e3151999-03-06 16:07:47 +00001371 *) Add a useful kludge to allow package maintainers to specify compiler and
1372 other platforms details on the command line without having to patch the
1373 Configure script everytime: One now can use ``perl Configure
1374 <id>:<details>'', i.e. platform ids are allowed to have details appended
1375 to them (seperated by colons). This is treated as there would be a static
1376 pre-configured entry in Configure's %table under key <id> with value
1377 <details> and ``perl Configure <id>'' is called. So, when you want to
1378 perform a quick test-compile under FreeBSD 3.1 with pgcc and without
1379 assembler stuff you can use ``perl Configure "FreeBSD-elf:pgcc:-O6:::"''
1380 now, which overrides the FreeBSD-elf entry on-the-fly.
1381 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1382
Ben Lauriebc348241999-03-06 15:21:02 +00001383 *) Disable new TLS1 ciphersuites by default: they aren't official yet.
1384 [Ben Laurie]
1385
Ralf S. Engelschall3eb0ed61999-03-06 14:35:03 +00001386 *) Allow DSO flags like -fpic, -fPIC, -KPIC etc. to be specified
1387 on the `perl Configure ...' command line. This way one can compile
1388 OpenSSL libraries with Position Independent Code (PIC) which is needed
1389 for linking it into DSOs.
1390 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1391
Ben Laurief415fa31999-03-06 14:09:36 +00001392 *) Remarkably, export ciphers were totally broken and no-one had noticed!
1393 Fixed.
1394 [Ben Laurie]
1395
Ralf S. Engelschall0b903ec1999-03-06 13:29:09 +00001396 *) Cleaned up the LICENSE document: The official contact for any license
1397 questions now is the OpenSSL core team under openssl-core@openssl.org.
1398 And add a paragraph about the dual-license situation to make sure people
1399 recognize that _BOTH_ the OpenSSL license _AND_ the SSLeay license apply
1400 to the OpenSSL toolkit.
1401 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1402
Ralf S. Engelschallbb8f3c51999-03-06 12:32:06 +00001403 *) General source tree makefile cleanups: Made `making xxx in yyy...'
1404 display consistent in the source tree and replaced `/bin/rm' by `rm'.
1405 Additonally cleaned up the `make links' target: Remove unnecessary
1406 semicolons, subsequent redundant removes, inline point.sh into mklink.sh
1407 to speed processing and no longer clutter the display with confusing
1408 stuff. Instead only the actually done links are displayed.
1409 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1410
Ben Laurie988788f1999-03-06 12:09:36 +00001411 *) Permit null encryption ciphersuites, used for authentication only. It used
1412 to be necessary to set the preprocessor define SSL_ALLOW_ENULL to do this.
1413 It is now necessary to set SSL_FORBID_ENULL to prevent the use of null
1414 encryption.
1415 [Ben Laurie]
1416
Dr. Stephen Henson924acc51999-03-05 02:05:15 +00001417 *) Add a bunch of fixes to the PKCS#7 stuff. It used to sometimes reorder
1418 signed attributes when verifying signatures (this would break them),
1419 the detached data encoding was wrong and public keys obtained using
1420 X509_get_pubkey() weren't freed.
1421 [Steve Henson]
1422
Dr. Stephen Hensond00b7aa1999-03-05 01:07:04 +00001423 *) Add text documentation for the BUFFER functions. Also added a work around
1424 to a Win95 console bug. This was triggered by the password read stuff: the
1425 last character typed gets carried over to the next fread(). If you were
1426 generating a new cert request using 'req' for example then the last
1427 character of the passphrase would be CR which would then enter the first
1428 field as blank.
Dr. Stephen Henson9985bed1999-03-04 23:29:51 +00001429 [Steve Henson]
1430
Ralf S. Engelschall789285a1999-03-04 12:55:42 +00001431 *) Added the new `Includes OpenSSL Cryptography Software' button as
1432 doc/openssl_button.{gif,html} which is similar in style to the old SSLeay
1433 button and can be used by applications based on OpenSSL to show the
1434 relationship to the OpenSSL project.
1435 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1436
Ralf S. Engelschalla06c6021999-03-04 07:54:01 +00001437 *) Remove confusing variables in function signatures in files
1438 ssl/ssl_lib.c and ssl/ssl.h.
1439 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
1440
Ralf S. Engelschall8d697db1999-03-04 07:47:27 +00001441 *) Don't install bss_file.c under PREFIX/include/
1442 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
1443
Dr. Stephen Henson06c68491999-03-03 02:01:26 +00001444 *) Get the Win32 compile working again. Modify mkdef.pl so it can handle
1445 functions that return function pointers and has support for NT specific
1446 stuff. Fix mk1mf.pl and VC-32.pl to support NT differences also. Various
1447 #ifdef WIN32 and WINNTs sprinkled about the place and some changes from
1448 unsigned to signed types: this was killing the Win32 compile.
1449 [Steve Henson]
1450
Ralf S. Engelschall72e442a1999-03-22 15:50:34 +00001451 *) Add new certificate file to stack functions,
1452 SSL_add_dir_cert_subjects_to_stack() and
1453 SSL_add_file_cert_subjects_to_stack(). These largely supplant
1454 SSL_load_client_CA_file(), and can be used to add multiple certs easily
1455 to a stack (usually this is then handed to SSL_CTX_set_client_CA_list()).
Ben Laurieeb90a481999-02-28 17:41:55 +00001456 This means that Apache-SSL and similar packages don't have to mess around
1457 to add as many CAs as they want to the preferred list.
1458 [Ben Laurie]
1459
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00001460 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
1461 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
1462 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
1463 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
1464 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +00001465
1466 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
1467 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00001468
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +00001469 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
1470 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
1471 [Steve Henson]
1472
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +00001473 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
1474 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
1475 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
1476 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
1477 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
1478 (e.g. s_server).
1479 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
1480 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
1481 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
1482 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
1483 no way to reconfigure them.
1484 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
1485 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
1486 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
1487 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
1488 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
1489 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1490
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +00001491 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
1492 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
1493 recognized by the users.
1494 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1495
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +00001496 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
1497 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
1498 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
1499 already masked variable.
1500 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1501
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +00001502 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
1503 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1504
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +00001505 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
1506 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
1507 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
1508 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1509
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +00001510 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
1511 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
1512 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1513
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +00001514 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
1515 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
1516 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
1517 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
1518 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
1519 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
1520 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
1521 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
1522 now, too.
1523 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1524
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +00001525 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
1526 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
1527 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
1528
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +00001529 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
1530 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
1531 config file.
1532 [Steve Henson]
1533
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +00001534 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
1535 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
1536
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +00001537 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
1538 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
1539 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
1540 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
1541 [Ben Laurie]
1542
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +00001543 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
1544 [Steve Henson]
1545
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +00001546 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
1547 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1548
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +00001549 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
1550 [Ben Laurie]
1551
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +00001552 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
1553 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
1554 [Steve Henson]
1555
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00001556 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
1557 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
1558 [Steve Henson]
1559
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +00001560 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
1561 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
1562 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
1563 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
1564 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
1565 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
1566 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
1567 Ben Laurie]
1568
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +00001569 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
1570 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1571
1572 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
1573 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
1574 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
1575 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
1576 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1577
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001578 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
1579 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00001580 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001581 [Steve Henson]
1582
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00001583 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
1584 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for
1585 an example.
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001586 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00001587
Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +00001588 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
1589 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
1590 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
1591
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +00001592 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
1593 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
1594 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
1595 build instructions.
1596 [Steve Henson]
1597
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +00001598 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
1599 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
1600 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
1601 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
1602 [Steve Henson]
1603
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +00001604 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
1605 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
1606 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
1607 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
1608 [Ben Laurie]
1609
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00001610 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
1611 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
1612 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
1613 so it wasn't spotted.
1614 [Steve Henson, reported by Erwann ABALEA <eabalea@certplus.com>]
1615
Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +00001616 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
1617 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
1618 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
1619 vectors if you have them.
1620 [Ben Laurie]
1621
Ralf S. Engelschall2c6ccde1999-03-06 14:01:29 +00001622 *) Correct calculation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +00001623 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
1624 [Ben Laurie]
1625
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00001626 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
1627 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
1628 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
1629 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
1630 If you do a:
1631 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
1632 it will update them.
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00001633 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00001634
Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +00001635 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
1636 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
1637 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
1638 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
1639 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
1640 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
1641 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
1642 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1643
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +00001644 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
1645 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
1646 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
1647 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
1648 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
1649 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
1650 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
1651 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
1652 the crypto/md/ stuff).
1653 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1654
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +00001655 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
1656 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
1657 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
1658 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
1659 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
1660 [Steve Henson]
1661
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +00001662 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the
1663 INTEGER code.
1664 [Steve Henson]
1665
Mark J. Cox351d8991999-01-31 12:14:39 +00001666 *) Add new function, EVP_MD_CTX_copy() to replace frequent use of memcpy.
1667 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1668
Ralf S. Engelschallb621d771999-01-31 11:10:10 +00001669 *) Make sure `make rehash' target really finds the `openssl' program.
1670 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1671
Ben Lauriea96e7811999-01-30 17:53:00 +00001672 *) Squeeze another 7% of speed out of MD5 assembler, at least on a P2. I'd
1673 like to hear about it if this slows down other processors.
1674 [Ben Laurie]
1675
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +00001676 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.

Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00001681
1682 *) New program nseq to manipulate netscape certificate sequences
1683 [Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +00001684
Dr. Stephen Henson9fe84291999-01-29 01:53:55 +00001685 *) Modify crl2pkcs7 so it supports multiple -certfile arguments. Fix a
1686 few typos.
1687 [Steve Henson]
1688
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +00001689 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION
1690 but the BN code had some problems that would cause failures when
1691 doing certificate verification and some other functions.
1692 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1693
Dr. Stephen Henson92c046c1999-01-28 00:16:44 +00001694 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
1695 [Steve Henson]
1696
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00001697 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
1698 [Steve Henson]
1699
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +00001700 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
1701 [Steve Henson]
1702
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +00001703 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
1704 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
1705 [Steve Henson]
1706
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00001707 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
1708 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
1709 CA extensions.
1710 [Steve Henson]
1711
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00001712 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the
1713 error code, add initial support to X509_print() and x509 application.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00001714 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00001715
Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +00001716 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
1717 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
1718 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
1719 [Steve Henson]
1720
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00001721 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
1722 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
1723 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
1724 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
1725 properly to be processed.
1726 [Steve Henson]
1727
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +00001728 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
1729 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
1730 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
1731 [Ben Laurie]
1732
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +00001733 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.

1735
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00001736 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
1737 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
1738 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
1739 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
1740 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
1741 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
1742 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
1743 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
1744 or delete all the .err files.

Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +00001747 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
1748 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
1749 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
1750 to regenerate it if needed.
1751 [Ben Laurie, reported (with fix for C version) by Jun-ichiro itojun
1752 Hagino <itojun@kame.net>]
1753
1754 *) File was opened incorrectly in randfile.c.

1756
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +00001757 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
1758 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
1759 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
1760 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
1761 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
1762 [Steve Henson]
1763
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +00001764 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.
1765 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1766
Ben Laurie512d2221999-01-17 14:14:41 +00001767 *) Remove pointless MD5 hash when using DSA keys in ca.
1768 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
1769
Ben Laurie2c1ef381999-01-17 14:10:08 +00001770 *) Generate an error if given an empty string as a cert directory. Also
1771 generate an error if handed NULL (previously returned 0 to indicate an
1772 error, but didn't set one).
1773 [Ben Laurie, reported by Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
1774
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +00001775 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
1776 [Ben Laurie]
1777
Dr. Stephen Hensonee13f9b1999-01-14 18:25:07 +00001778 *) Fix the dummy function BN_ref_mod_exp() in rsaref.c to have the correct
1779 parameters. This was causing a warning which killed off the Win32 compile.
1780 [Steve Henson]
1781
Dr. Stephen Henson27eb6221999-01-14 18:21:57 +00001782 *) Remove C++ style comments from crypto/bn/bn_local.h.
1783 [Neil Costigan <neil.costigan@celocom.com>]
1784
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +00001785 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
1786 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
1787 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
1788 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
1789 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
1790 OID is not part of the table.
1791 [Steve Henson]
1792
Ben Lauriea6801a91999-01-10 20:36:02 +00001793 *) Add prototypes to X509 lookup/verify methods, fixing a bug in
1794 X509_LOOKUP_by_alias().
1795 [Ben Laurie]
1796
Ben Laurie50acf461999-01-09 19:15:59 +00001797 *) Sort openssl functions by name.
1798 [Ben Laurie]
1799
Dr. Stephen Henson7f9b7b01999-01-09 17:29:34 +00001800 *) Get the gendsa program working (hopefully) and add it to app list. Remove
1801 encryption from sample DSA keys (in case anyone is interested the password
1802 was "1234").
1803 [Steve Henson]
1804
Ben Lauriee03ddfa1999-01-07 19:15:59 +00001805 *) Make _all_ *_free functions accept a NULL pointer.

1811
Ben Lauriec13d4791999-01-07 00:16:37 +00001812 *) s_server should send the CAfile as acceptable CAs, not its own cert.

1817
Ben Laurie5b001151999-01-06 23:18:08 +00001818 *) Temp key "for export" tests were wrong in s3_srvr.c.
1819 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
1820
Ben Laurief8c3c051999-01-06 22:53:34 +00001821 *) Add prototype for temp key callback functions
1822 SSL_CTX_set_tmp_{rsa,dh}_callback().
1823 [Ben Laurie]
1824
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00001825 *) Make DH_free() tolerate being passed a NULL pointer (like RSA_free() and
1826 DSA_free()). Make X509_PUBKEY_set() check for errors in d2i_PublicKey().
Dr. Stephen Henson384c4791999-01-06 01:41:21 +00001827 [Steve Henson]

1840
Ralf S. Engelschallcb0f35d1999-01-03 15:31:11 +00001841 *) Make sure the already existing X509_STORE->depth variable is initialized
1842 in X509_STORE_new(), but document the fact that this variable is still
1843 unused in the certificate verification process.
1844 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1845
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcf6451999-01-03 01:08:33 +00001846 *) Fix the various library and apps files to free up pkeys obtained from
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00001847 X509_PUBKEY_get() et al. Also allow x509.c to handle netscape extensions.

1849
Ben Lauriecdbb8c21999-01-02 19:04:27 +00001850 *) Fix reference counting in X509_PUBKEY_get(). This makes
1851 demos/maurice/example2.c work, amongst others, probably.
1852 [Steve Henson and Ben Laurie]
1853
Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00001854 *) First cut of a cleanup for apps/. First the `ssleay' program is now named
1855 `openssl' and second, the shortcut symlinks for the `openssl <command>'
1856 are no longer created. This way we have a single and consistent command
1857 line interface `openssl <command>', similar to `cvs <command>'.

1862 [Steve Henson]
1863
Dr. Stephen Hensonebc828c1999-01-01 18:43:44 +00001864 *) Add CA.pl, perl version of CA.sh, add extended key usage OID.

1880 [Ben Laurie]
1881
stephen792a9001998-12-31 01:35:07 +00001882 *) Enhanced the err-ins.pl script so it makes the error library number
1883 global and can add a library name. This is needed for external ASN1 and
1884 other error libraries.
1885 [Steve Henson]
1886
1887 *) Fixed sk_insert which never worked properly.
1888 [Steve Henson]
1889
1890 *) Fix ASN1 macros so they can handle indefinite length construted
1891 EXPLICIT tags. Some non standard certificates use these: they can now
1892 be read in.
1893 [Steve Henson]
1894
Ralf S. Engelschallce72df11998-12-30 23:07:32 +00001895 *) Merged the various old/obsolete SSLeay documentation files (doc/xxx.doc)
1896 into a single doc/ssleay.txt bundle. This way the information is still
1897 preserved but no longer messes up this directory. Now it's new room for
1898 the new set of documenation files.
1899 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1900
Ben Laurie4098e891998-12-29 21:43:55 +00001901 *) SETs were incorrectly DER encoded. This was a major pain, because they
1902 shared code with SEQUENCEs, which aren't coded the same. This means that
1903 almost everything to do with SETs or SEQUENCEs has either changed name or
1904 number of arguments.
1905 [Ben Laurie, based on a partial fix by GP Jayan <gp@nsj.co.jp>]
1906
1907 *) Fix test data to work with the above.
1908 [Ben Laurie]
1909
Ben Laurie03f8b041998-12-29 17:22:31 +00001910 *) Fix the RSA header declarations that hid a bug I fixed in 0.9.0b but

1915 [Ben Laurie]
1916
Ben Laurie1641cb61998-12-28 17:08:48 +00001917 *) Fix various bugs in Configure. This affects the following platforms:

1943 because the symlink to include/ was missing.
1944 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1945
1946 *) Incorporated the popular no-RSA/DSA-only patches

1951 when "ssleay" is still not found.
1952 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1953
1954 *) Added more platforms to Configure: Cray T3E, HPUX 11,

1961 to make a "cvs update" really silent.
1962 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1963
1964 *) Recompiled the error-definition header files and added
1965 missing symbols to the Win32 linker tables.
1966 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1967
1968 *) Cleaned up the top-level documents;
1969 o new files: CHANGES and LICENSE
