Ralf S. Engelschalld91e2011999-08-09 11:14:08 +00005 Changes between 0.9.4 and 0.9.5 [xx XXX 1999]
6
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +00007 *) Fixes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities, change the 'req' program so it uses
8 the new code. Add documentation for this stuff.
9 [Steve Henson]
10
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +000011 *) Changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities. These have been renamed from
12 X509_*() to X509at_*() on the grounds that they don't handle X509
13 structures and behave in an analagous way to the X509v3 functions:
14 they shouldn't be called directly but wrapper functions should be used
15 instead.
16
17 So we also now have some wrapper functions that call the X509at functions
18 when passed certificate requests. (TO DO: similar things can be done with
19 PKCS#7 signed and unsigned attributes, PKCS#12 attributes and a few other
20 things. Some of these need some d2i or i2d and print functionality
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +000021 because they handle more complex structures.)
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +000022 [Steve Henson]
23
Ulf Mölleraa82db42000-01-16 21:10:00 +000024 *) Add missing #ifndefs that caused missing symbols when building libssl
25 as a shared library without RSA. Use #ifndef NO_SSL2 instead of
26 NO_RSA in ssl/s2*.c.
27 [Kris Kennaway <kris@hub.freebsd.org>, modified by Ulf Möller]
28
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +000029 *) Precautions against using the PRNG uninitialized: RAND_bytes() now
Bodo Möller09837602000-01-13 21:20:26 +000030 has a return value which indicates the quality of the random data
31 (1 = ok, 0 = not seeded). Also an error is recorded on the thread's
Ulf Möller373b5752000-01-16 15:58:17 +000032 error queue. New function RAND_pseudo_bytes() generates output that is
33 guaranteed to be unique but not unpredictable.
Bodo Möller09837602000-01-13 21:20:26 +000034 (TO DO: always check the result of RAND_bytes when it is used in the
Ulf Möller373b5752000-01-16 15:58:17 +000035 library, or use RAND_pseudo_bytes instead, because leaving the
36 error in the error queue but reporting success in a function that
37 uses RAND_bytes could confuse things considerably.)
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +000038 [Ulf Möller]
39
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +000040 *) Do more iterations of Rabin-Miller probable prime test (specifically,
41 3 for 1024-bit primes, 6 for 512-bit primes, 12 for 256-bit primes
42 instead of only 2 for all lengths; see BN_prime_checks definition
43 in crypto/bn/bn.h for the complete table). This guarantees a
44 false-positive rate of at most 2^-80 (actually less because we are
45 additionally doing trial division) for random input.
46 [Bodo Moeller]
47
Bodo Möller3cc6cde2000-01-11 08:09:27 +000048 *) Rewrite ssl3_read_n (ssl/s3_pkt.c) avoiding a couple of bugs.
Bodo Möllerc51ae172000-01-11 01:07:26 +000049 [Bodo Moeller]
50
Dr. Stephen Henson25f923d2000-01-09 14:21:40 +000051 *) New function X509_CTX_rget_chain(), this returns the chain
52 from an X509_CTX structure with a dup of the stack and all
53 the X509 reference counts upped: so the stack will exist
54 after X509_CTX_cleanup() has been called. Modify pkcs12.c
55 to use this.
56
57 Also make SSL_SESSION_print() print out the verify return
58 code.
59 [Steve Henson]
60
Dr. Stephen Hensondad666f2000-01-08 03:16:04 +000061 *) Add manpage for the pkcs12 command. Also change the default
62 behaviour so MAC iteration counts are used unless the new
63 -nomaciter option is used. This improves file security and
64 only older versions of MSIE (4.0 for example) need it.
65 [Steve Henson]
66
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +000067 *) Honor the no-xxx Configure options when creating .DEF files.
68 [Ulf Möller]
69
Dr. Stephen Henson35f48502000-01-07 00:55:54 +000070 *) Add PKCS#10 attributes to field table: challengePassword,
71 unstructuredName and unstructuredAddress. These are taken from
72 draft PKCS#9 v2.0 but are compatible with v1.2 provided no
73 international characters are used.
74
75 More changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE code: allow the setting of types
76 based on strings. Remove the 'loc' parameter when adding
77 attributes because these will be a SET OF encoding which is sorted
78 in ASN1 order.
79 [Steve Henson]
80
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +000081 *) Initial changes to the 'req' utility to allow request generation
82 automation. This will allow an application to just generate a template
83 file containing all the field values and have req construct the
84 request.
85
86 Initial support for X509_ATTRIBUTE handling. Stacks of these are
87 used all over the place including certificate requests and PKCS#7
88 structures. They are currently handled manually where necessary with
89 some primitive wrappers for PKCS#7. The new functions behave in a
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +000090 manner analogous to the X509 extension functions: they allow
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +000091 attributes to be looked up by NID and added.
92
93 Later something similar to the X509V3 code would be desirable to
94 automatically handle the encoding, decoding and printing of the
95 more complex types. The string types like challengePassword can
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +000096 be handled by the string table functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +000097
98 Also modified the multi byte string table handling. Now there is
99 a 'global mask' which masks out certain types. The table itself
100 can use the flag STABLE_NO_MASK to ignore the mask setting: this
101 is useful when for example there is only one permissible type
102 (as in countryName) and using the mask might result in no valid
103 types at all.
104 [Steve Henson]
105
Bodo Möllerca031092000-01-06 01:19:17 +0000106 *) Clean up 'Finished' handling, and add functions SSL_get_finished and
107 SSL_get_peer_finished to allow applications to obtain the latest
108 Finished messages sent to the peer or expected from the peer,
109 respectively. (SSL_get_peer_finished is usually the Finished message
110 actually received from the peer, otherwise the protocol will be aborted.)
111
112 As the Finished message are message digests of the complete handshake
113 (with a total of 192 bits for TLS 1.0 and more for SSL 3.0), they can
114 be used for external authentication procedures when the authentication
115 provided by SSL/TLS is not desired or is not enough.
Bodo Möllerf2d9a322000-01-06 00:24:24 +0000116 [Bodo Moeller]
117
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +0000118 *) Enhanced support for Alpha Linux is added. Now ./config checks if
119 the host supports BWX extension and if Compaq C is present on the
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000120 $PATH. Just exploiting of the BWX extension results in 20-30%
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +0000121 performance kick for some algorithms, e.g. DES and RC4 to mention
122 a couple. Compaq C in turn generates ~20% faster code for MD5 and
123 SHA1.
124 [Andy Polyakov]
125
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +0000126 *) Add support for MS "fast SGC". This is arguably a violation of the
127 SSL3/TLS protocol. Netscape SGC does two handshakes: the first with
128 weak crypto and after checking the certificate is SGC a second one
129 with strong crypto. MS SGC stops the first handshake after receiving
130 the server certificate message and sends a second client hello. Since
131 a server will typically do all the time consuming operations before
132 expecting any further messages from the client (server key exchange
133 is the most expensive) there is little difference between the two.
134
135 To get OpenSSL to support MS SGC we have to permit a second client
136 hello message after we have sent server done. In addition we have to
137 reset the MAC if we do get this second client hello and include the
138 data just received.
139 [Steve Henson]
140
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +0000141 *) Add a function 'd2i_AutoPrivateKey()' this will automatically decide
142 if a DER encoded private key is RSA or DSA traditional format. Changed
143 d2i_PrivateKey_bio() to use it. This is only needed for the "traditional"
144 format DER encoded private key. Newer code should use PKCS#8 format which
145 has the key type encoded in the ASN1 structure. Added DER private key
146 support to pkcs8 application.
147 [Steve Henson]
148
Bodo Möller47134b71999-12-29 17:43:03 +0000149 *) SSL 3/TLS 1 servers now don't request certificates when an anonymous
150 ciphersuites has been selected (as required by the SSL 3/TLS 1
151 specifications). Exception: When SSL_VERIFY_FAIL_IF_NO_PEER_CERT
152 is set, we interpret this as a request to violate the specification
153 (the worst that can happen is a handshake failure, and 'correct'
154 behaviour would result in a handshake failure anyway).
155 [Bodo Moeller]
156
Bodo Möller45fd4db1999-12-29 14:29:32 +0000157 *) In SSL_CTX_add_session, take into account that there might be multiple
158 SSL_SESSION structures with the same session ID (e.g. when two threads
159 concurrently obtain them from an external cache).
160 The internal cache can handle only one SSL_SESSION with a given ID,
161 so if there's a conflict, we now throw out the old one to achieve
162 consistency.
163 [Bodo Moeller]
164
Dr. Stephen Hensonf45f40f1999-12-29 02:59:18 +0000165 *) Add OIDs for idea and blowfish in CBC mode. This will allow both
166 to be used in PKCS#5 v2.0 and S/MIME. Also add checking to
167 some routines that use cipher OIDs: some ciphers do not have OIDs
168 defined and so they cannot be used for S/MIME and PKCS#5 v2.0 for
169 example.
170 [Steve Henson]
171
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +0000172 *) Simplify the trust setting structure and code. Now we just have
173 two sequences of OIDs for trusted and rejected settings. These will
174 typically have values the same as the extended key usage extension
175 and any application specific purposes.
176
177 The trust checking code now has a default behaviour: it will just
178 check for an object with the same NID as the passed id. Functions can
179 be provided to override either the default behaviour or the behaviour
180 for a given id. SSL client, server and email already have functions
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +0000181 in place for compatibility: they check the NID and also return "trusted"
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +0000182 if the certificate is self signed.
183 [Steve Henson]
184
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +0000185 *) Add d2i,i2d bio/fp functions for PrivateKey: these convert the
186 traditional format into an EVP_PKEY structure.
187 [Steve Henson]
188
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +0000189 *) Add a password callback function PEM_cb() which either prompts for
190 a password if usr_data is NULL or otherwise assumes it is a null
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +0000191 terminated password. Allow passwords to be passed on command line
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +0000192 environment or config files in a few more utilities.
193 [Steve Henson]
194
Dr. Stephen Henson525f51f1999-12-23 02:02:42 +0000195 *) Add a bunch of DER and PEM functions to handle PKCS#8 format private
196 keys. Add some short names for PKCS#8 PBE algorithms and allow them
197 to be specified on the command line for the pkcs8 and pkcs12 utilities.
198 Update documentation.
199 [Steve Henson]
200
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +0000201 *) Support for ASN1 "NULL" type. This could be handled before by using
202 ASN1_TYPE but there wasn't any function that would try to read a NULL
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000203 and produce an error if it couldn't. For compatibility we also have
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +0000204 ASN1_NULL_new() and ASN1_NULL_free() functions but these are faked and
205 don't allocate anything because they don't need to.
206 [Steve Henson]
207
Andy Polyakov099f1b31999-12-19 16:17:45 +0000208 *) Initial support for MacOS is now provided. Examine INSTALL.MacOS
209 for details.
210 [Andy Polyakov, Roy Woods <roy@centicsystems.ca>]
211
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +0000212 *) Rebuild of the memory allocation routines used by OpenSSL code and
213 possibly others as well. The purpose is to make an interface that
214 provide hooks so anyone can build a separate set of allocation and
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +0000215 deallocation routines to be used by OpenSSL, for example memory
216 pool implementations, or something else, which was previously hard
217 since Malloc(), Realloc() and Free() were defined as macros having
Richard Levittede73e392000-01-11 22:32:37 +0000218 the values malloc, realloc and free, respectively (except for Win32
219 compilations). The same is provided for memory debugging code.
220 OpenSSL already comes with functionality to find memory leaks, but
221 this gives people a chance to debug other memory problems.
Richard Levitted8df48a1999-12-18 01:14:39 +0000222
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +0000223 With these changes, a new set of functions and macros have appeared:
224
225 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() [F]
226 CRYPTO_get_mem_debug_functions() [F]
227 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options() [F]
228 CRYPTO_dbg_get_options() [F]
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000229 CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() [M]
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +0000230
231 The memory debug functions are NULL by default, unless the library
232 is compiled with CRYPTO_MDEBUG or friends is defined. If someone
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +0000233 wants to debug memory anyway, CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() (which
234 gives the standard debugging functions that come with OpenSSL) or
235 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() (tells OpenSSL to use functions
236 provided by the library user) must be used. When the standard
237 debugging functions are used, CRYPTO_dbg_set_options can be used to
238 request additional information:
239 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options(V_CYRPTO_MDEBUG_xxx) corresponds to setting
240 the CRYPTO_MDEBUG_xxx macro when compiling the library.
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +0000241
242 Also, things like CRYPTO_set_mem_functions will always give the
243 expected result (the new set of functions is used for allocation
244 and deallocation) at all times, regardless of platform and compiler
245 options.
246
247 To finish it up, some functions that were never use in any other
248 way than through macros have a new API and new semantic:
249
250 CRYPTO_dbg_malloc()
251 CRYPTO_dbg_realloc()
252 CRYPTO_dbg_free()
253
254 All macros of value have retained their old syntax.
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +0000255 [Richard Levitte and Bodo Moeller]
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +0000256
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2166641999-12-11 20:04:06 +0000257 *) Some S/MIME fixes. The OID for SMIMECapabilities was wrong, the
258 ordering of SMIMECapabilities wasn't in "strength order" and there
259 was a missing NULL in the AlgorithmIdentifier for the SHA1 signature
260 algorithm.
261 [Steve Henson]
262
Dr. Stephen Hensond8223ef1999-12-10 13:46:48 +0000263 *) Some ASN1 types with illegal zero length encoding (INTEGER,
264 ENUMERATED and OBJECT IDENTIFIER) choked the ASN1 routines.
265 [Frans Heymans <fheymans@isaserver.be>, modified by Steve Henson]
266
Dr. Stephen Henson5a9a4b21999-12-05 00:40:59 +0000267 *) Merge in my S/MIME library for OpenSSL. This provides a simple
268 S/MIME API on top of the PKCS#7 code, a MIME parser (with enough
269 functionality to handle multipart/signed properly) and a utility
270 called 'smime' to call all this stuff. This is based on code I
271 originally wrote for Celo who have kindly allowed it to be
272 included in OpenSSL.
273 [Steve Henson]
274
Bodo Möllercddfe781999-12-03 20:24:21 +0000275 *) Add variants des_set_key_checked and des_set_key_unchecked of
276 des_set_key (aka des_key_sched). Global variable des_check_key
277 decides which of these is called by des_set_key; this way
278 des_check_key behaves as it always did, but applications and
279 the library itself, which was buggy for des_check_key == 1,
280 have a cleaner way to pick the version they need.
281 [Bodo Moeller]
282
Dr. Stephen Henson21131f01999-12-03 03:46:18 +0000283 *) New function PKCS12_newpass() which changes the password of a
284 PKCS12 structure.
285 [Steve Henson]
286
Dr. Stephen Hensondd413411999-12-02 02:33:56 +0000287 *) Modify X509_TRUST and X509_PURPOSE so it also uses a static and
288 dynamic mix. In both cases the ids can be used as an index into the
289 table. Also modified the X509_TRUST_add() and X509_PURPOSE_add()
290 functions so they accept a list of the field values and the
291 application doesn't need to directly manipulate the X509_TRUST
292 structure.
293 [Steve Henson]
294
295 *) Modify the ASN1_STRING_TABLE stuff so it also uses bsearch and doesn't
296 need initialising.
297 [Steve Henson]
298
Dr. Stephen Henson08cba611999-12-01 01:49:46 +0000299 *) Modify the way the V3 extension code looks up extensions. This now
300 works in a similar way to the object code: we have some "standard"
301 extensions in a static table which is searched with OBJ_bsearch()
302 and the application can add dynamic ones if needed. The file
303 crypto/x509v3/ext_dat.h now has the info: this file needs to be
304 updated whenever a new extension is added to the core code and kept
305 in ext_nid order. There is a simple program 'tabtest.c' which checks
306 this. New extensions are not added too often so this file can readily
307 be maintained manually.
308
309 There are two big advantages in doing things this way. The extensions
310 can be looked up immediately and no longer need to be "added" using
311 X509V3_add_standard_extensions(): this function now does nothing.
312 [Side note: I get *lots* of email saying the extension code doesn't
313 work because people forget to call this function]
314 Also no dynamic allocation is done unless new extensions are added:
315 so if we don't add custom extensions there is no need to call
316 X509V3_EXT_cleanup().
317 [Steve Henson]
318
Ben Lauriefea9afb1999-11-30 20:15:19 +0000319 *) Modify enc utility's salting as follows: make salting the default. Add a
320 magic header, so unsalted files fail gracefully instead of just decrypting
321 to garbage. This is because not salting is a big security hole, so people
322 should be discouraged from doing it.
323 [Ben Laurie]
324
Dr. Stephen Henson98682321999-11-27 01:14:04 +0000325 *) Fixes and enhancements to the 'x509' utility. It allowed a message
326 digest to be passed on the command line but it only used this
327 parameter when signing a certificate. Modified so all relevant
328 operations are affected by the digest parameter including the
329 -fingerprint and -x509toreq options. Also -x509toreq choked if a
330 DSA key was used because it didn't fix the digest.
331 [Steve Henson]
332
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +0000333 *) Initial certificate chain verify code. Currently tests the untrusted
334 certificates for consistency with the verify purpose (which is set
335 when the X509_STORE_CTX structure is set up) and checks the pathlength.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +0000336
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +0000337 There is a NO_CHAIN_VERIFY compilation option to keep the old behaviour:
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +0000338 this is because it will reject chains with invalid extensions whereas
339 every previous version of OpenSSL and SSLeay made no checks at all.
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +0000340
341 Trust code: checks the root CA for the relevant trust settings. Trust
342 settings have an initial value consistent with the verify purpose: e.g.
343 if the verify purpose is for SSL client use it expects the CA to be
344 trusted for SSL client use. However the default value can be changed to
345 permit custom trust settings: one example of this would be to only trust
346 certificates from a specific "secure" set of CAs.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +0000347
348 Also added X509_STORE_CTX_new() and X509_STORE_CTX_free() functions
349 which should be used for version portability: especially since the
350 verify structure is likely to change more often now.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +0000351
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +0000352 SSL integration. Add purpose and trust to SSL_CTX and SSL and functions
353 to set them. If not set then assume SSL clients will verify SSL servers
354 and vice versa.
355
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +0000356 Two new options to the verify program: -untrusted allows a set of
357 untrusted certificates to be passed in and -purpose which sets the
358 intended purpose of the certificate. If a purpose is set then the
359 new chain verify code is used to check extension consistency.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +0000360 [Steve Henson]
361
362 *) Support for the authority information access extension.
Dr. Stephen Henson6d3724d1999-11-23 18:50:28 +0000363 [Steve Henson]
364
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +0000365 *) Modify RSA and DSA PEM read routines to transparently handle
366 PKCS#8 format private keys. New *_PUBKEY_* functions that handle
367 public keys in a format compatible with certificate
368 SubjectPublicKeyInfo structures. Unfortunately there were already
369 functions called *_PublicKey_* which used various odd formats so
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000370 these are retained for compatibility: however the DSA variants were
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +0000371 never in a public release so they have been deleted. Changed dsa/rsa
372 utilities to handle the new format: note no releases ever handled public
373 keys so we should be OK.
374
375 The primary motivation for this change is to avoid the same fiasco
376 that dogs private keys: there are several incompatible private key
377 formats some of which are standard and some OpenSSL specific and
378 require various evil hacks to allow partial transparent handling and
379 even then it doesn't work with DER formats. Given the option anything
380 other than PKCS#8 should be dumped: but the other formats have to
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000381 stay in the name of compatibility.
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +0000382
383 With public keys and the benefit of hindsight one standard format
384 is used which works with EVP_PKEY, RSA or DSA structures: though
385 it clearly returns an error if you try to read the wrong kind of key.
386
387 Added a -pubkey option to the 'x509' utility to output the public key.
388 Also rename the EVP_PKEY_get_*() to EVP_PKEY_rget_*() and add
389 EVP_PKEY_rset_*() functions that do the same as the EVP_PKEY_assign_*()
390 except they up the reference count of the added key (they don't "swallow"
391 the supplied key).
392 [Steve Henson]
393
394 *) Fixes to crypto/x509/by_file.c the code to read in certificates and
395 CRLs would fail if the file contained no certificates or no CRLs:
396 added a new function to read in both types and return the number
397 read: this means that if none are read it will be an error. The
398 DER versions of the certificate and CRL reader would always fail
399 because it isn't possible to mix certificates and CRLs in DER format
400 without choking one or the other routine. Changed this to just read
401 a certificate: this is the best we can do. Also modified the code
402 in apps/verify.c to take notice of return codes: it was previously
403 attempting to read in certificates from NULL pointers and ignoring
404 any errors: this is one reason why the cert and CRL reader seemed
405 to work. It doesn't check return codes from the default certificate
406 routines: these may well fail if the certificates aren't installed.
407 [Steve Henson]
408
Dr. Stephen Hensona716d721999-11-19 02:19:58 +0000409 *) Code to support otherName option in GeneralName.
410 [Steve Henson]
411
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +0000412 *) First update to verify code. Change the verify utility
413 so it warns if it is passed a self signed certificate:
414 for consistency with the normal behaviour. X509_verify
415 has been modified to it will now verify a self signed
416 certificate if *exactly* the same certificate appears
417 in the store: it was previously impossible to trust a
418 single self signed certificate. This means that:
419 openssl verify ss.pem
420 now gives a warning about a self signed certificate but
421 openssl verify -CAfile ss.pem ss.pem
422 is OK.
423 [Steve Henson]
424
Bodo Möllerb1fe6ca1999-11-16 23:15:41 +0000425 *) For servers, store verify_result in SSL_SESSION data structure
426 (and add it to external session representation).
427 This is needed when client certificate verifications fails,
428 but an application-provided verification callback (set by
429 SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback) allows accepting the session
430 anyway (i.e. leaves x509_store_ctx->error != X509_V_OK
431 but returns 1): When the session is reused, we have to set
432 ssl->verify_result to the appropriate error code to avoid
433 security holes.
434 [Bodo Moeller, problem pointed out by Lutz Jaenicke]
435
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +0000436 *) Fix a bug in the new PKCS#7 code: it didn't consider the
437 case in PKCS7_dataInit() where the signed PKCS7 structure
438 didn't contain any existing data because it was being created.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +0000439 [Po-Cheng Chen <pocheng@nst.com.tw>, slightly modified by Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +0000440
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd699ac1999-11-16 02:49:25 +0000441 *) Add a salt to the key derivation routines in enc.c. This
442 forms the first 8 bytes of the encrypted file. Also add a
443 -S option to allow a salt to be input on the command line.
444 [Steve Henson]
445
Dr. Stephen Hensone947f391999-11-16 00:56:03 +0000446 *) New function X509_cmp(). Oddly enough there wasn't a function
447 to compare two certificates. We do this by working out the SHA1
448 hash and comparing that. X509_cmp() will be needed by the trust
449 code.
450 [Steve Henson]
451
Mark J. Coxb7cfcfb1999-11-15 16:31:31 +0000452 *) Correctly increment the reference count in the SSL_SESSION pointer
453 returned from SSL_get_session().
454 [Geoff Thorpe <geoff@eu.c2.net>]
455
Dr. Stephen Henson06556a11999-11-14 23:10:50 +0000456 *) Fix for 'req': it was adding a null to request attributes.
457 Also change the X509_LOOKUP and X509_INFO code to handle
458 certificate auxiliary information.
459 [Steve Henson]
460
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +0000461 *) Add support for 40 and 64 bit RC2 and RC4 algorithms: document
462 the 'enc' command.
463 [Steve Henson]
464
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +0000465 *) Add the possibility to add extra information to the memory leak
466 detecting output, to form tracebacks, showing from where each
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +0000467 allocation was originated: CRYPTO_push_info("constant string") adds
468 the string plus current file name and line number to a per-thread
469 stack, CRYPTO_pop_info() does the obvious, CRYPTO_remove_all_info()
470 is like calling CYRPTO_pop_info() until the stack is empty.
471 Also updated memory leak detection code to be multi-thread-safe.
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +0000472 [Richard Levitte]
473
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +0000474 *) Add options -text and -noout to pkcs7 utility and delete the
Dr. Stephen Henson954ef7e1999-11-12 01:42:25 +0000475 encryption options which never did anything. Update docs.
476 [Steve Henson]
477
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf298111999-11-11 18:41:31 +0000478 *) Add options to some of the utilities to allow the pass phrase
479 to be included on either the command line (not recommended on
480 OSes like Unix) or read from the environment. Update the
481 manpages and fix a few bugs.
482 [Steve Henson]
483
Dr. Stephen Hensonaba3e651999-11-10 02:52:17 +0000484 *) Add a few manpages for some of the openssl commands.
485 [Steve Henson]
486
Dr. Stephen Hensona0ad17b1999-11-08 13:58:08 +0000487 *) Fix the -revoke option in ca. It was freeing up memory twice,
488 leaking and not finding already revoked certificates.
489 [Steve Henson]
490
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +0000491 *) Extensive changes to support certificate auxiliary information.
492 This involves the use of X509_CERT_AUX structure and X509_AUX
493 functions. An X509_AUX function such as PEM_read_X509_AUX()
494 can still read in a certificate file in the usual way but it
495 will also read in any additional "auxiliary information". By
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000496 doing things this way a fair degree of compatibility can be
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +0000497 retained: existing certificates can have this information added
498 using the new 'x509' options.
499
500 Current auxiliary information includes an "alias" and some trust
501 settings. The trust settings will ultimately be used in enhanced
502 certificate chain verification routines: currently a certificate
503 can only be trusted if it is self signed and then it is trusted
504 for all purposes.
505 [Steve Henson]
506
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +0000507 *) Fix assembler for Alpha (tested only on DEC OSF not Linux or *BSD).
508 The problem was that one of the replacement routines had not been working
509 since SSLeay releases. For now the offending routine has been replaced
510 with non-optimised assembler. Even so, this now gives around 95%
511 performance improvement for 1024 bit RSA signs.
Mark J. Coxce2c95b1999-11-03 14:10:10 +0000512 [Mark Cox]
513
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +0000514 *) Hack to fix PKCS#7 decryption when used with some unorthodox RC2
515 handling. Most clients have the effective key size in bits equal to
516 the key length in bits: so a 40 bit RC2 key uses a 40 bit (5 byte) key.
517 A few however don't do this and instead use the size of the decrypted key
518 to determine the RC2 key length and the AlgorithmIdentifier to determine
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000519 the effective key length. In this case the effective key length can still
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +0000520 be 40 bits but the key length can be 168 bits for example. This is fixed
521 by manually forcing an RC2 key into the EVP_PKEY structure because the
522 EVP code can't currently handle unusual RC2 key sizes: it always assumes
523 the key length and effective key length are equal.
524 [Steve Henson]
525
Dr. Stephen Henson74400f71999-10-27 00:15:11 +0000526 *) Add a bunch of functions that should simplify the creation of
527 X509_NAME structures. Now you should be able to do:
528 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, "CN", MBSTRING_ASC, "Steve", -1, -1, 0);
529 and have it automatically work out the correct field type and fill in
530 the structures. The more adventurous can try:
531 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, field, MBSTRING_UTF8, str, -1, -1, 0);
532 and it will (hopefully) work out the correct multibyte encoding.
533 [Steve Henson]
534
535 *) Change the 'req' utility to use the new field handling and multibyte
536 copy routines. Before the DN field creation was handled in an ad hoc
537 way in req, ca, and x509 which was rather broken and didn't support
538 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings. Since some software doesn't implement
539 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings yet, they can be enabled using the config file
540 using the dirstring_type option. See the new comment in the default
541 openssl.cnf for more info.
542 [Steve Henson]
543
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +0000544 *) Make crypto/rand/md_rand.c more robust:
Bodo Möller62ac2931999-10-26 16:26:48 +0000545 - Assure unique random numbers after fork().
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +0000546 - Make sure that concurrent threads access the global counter and
547 md serializably so that we never lose entropy in them
548 or use exactly the same state in multiple threads.
549 Access to the large state is not always serializable because
550 the additional locking could be a performance killer, and
551 md should be large enough anyway.
552 [Bodo Moeller]
553
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000554 *) New file apps/app_rand.c with commonly needed functionality
555 for handling the random seed file.
556
557 Use the random seed file in some applications that previously did not:
558 ca,
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000559 dsaparam -genkey (which also ignored its '-rand' option),
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000560 s_client,
561 s_server,
562 x509 (when signing).
563 Except on systems with /dev/urandom, it is crucial to have a random
564 seed file at least for key creation, DSA signing, and for DH exchanges;
Bodo Möller99e87561999-10-26 11:19:42 +0000565 for RSA signatures we could do without one.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000566
567 gendh and gendsa (unlike genrsa) used to read only the first byte
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000568 of each file listed in the '-rand' option. The function as previously
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000569 found in genrsa is now in app_rand.c and is used by all programs
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000570 that support '-rand'.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +0000571 [Bodo Moeller]
572
573 *) In RAND_write_file, use mode 0600 for creating files;
574 don't just chmod when it may be too late.
575 [Bodo Moeller]
576
577 *) Report an error from X509_STORE_load_locations
578 when X509_LOOKUP_load_file or X509_LOOKUP_add_dir failed.
579 [Bill Perry]
580
Dr. Stephen Henson462f79e1999-10-21 13:20:49 +0000581 *) New function ASN1_mbstring_copy() this copies a string in either
582 ASCII, Unicode, Universal (4 bytes per character) or UTF8 format
583 into an ASN1_STRING type. A mask of permissible types is passed
584 and it chooses the "minimal" type to use or an error if not type
585 is suitable.
586 [Steve Henson]
587
Dr. Stephen Henson08e9c1a1999-10-20 01:50:23 +0000588 *) Add function equivalents to the various macros in asn1.h. The old
589 macros are retained with an M_ prefix. Code inside the library can
590 use the M_ macros. External code (including the openssl utility)
591 should *NOT* in order to be "shared library friendly".
592 [Steve Henson]
593
Dr. Stephen Henson673b1021999-10-13 01:11:56 +0000594 *) Add various functions that can check a certificate's extensions
595 to see if it usable for various purposes such as SSL client,
596 server or S/MIME and CAs of these types. This is currently
597 VERY EXPERIMENTAL but will ultimately be used for certificate chain
598 verification. Also added a -purpose flag to x509 utility to
599 print out all the purposes.
600 [Steve Henson]
601
Dr. Stephen Henson56a3fec1999-10-11 01:30:04 +0000602 *) Add a CRYPTO_EX_DATA to X509 certificate structure and associated
603 functions.
604 [Steve Henson]
605
Dr. Stephen Henson4654ef91999-10-09 02:54:10 +0000606 *) New X509V3_{X509,CRL,REVOKED}_get_d2i() functions. These will search
607 for, obtain and decode and extension and obtain its critical flag.
608 This allows all the necessary extension code to be handled in a
609 single function call.
610 [Steve Henson]
611
Andy Polyakov7e102e21999-10-07 12:10:26 +0000612 *) RC4 tune-up featuring 30-40% performance improvement on most RISC
613 platforms. See crypto/rc4/rc4_enc.c for further details.
614 [Andy Polyakov]
615
Dr. Stephen Hensond71c6bc1999-10-05 13:10:21 +0000616 *) New -noout option to asn1parse. This causes no output to be produced
617 its main use is when combined with -strparse and -out to extract data
618 from a file (which may not be in ASN.1 format).
619 [Steve Henson]
620
Dr. Stephen Henson2d681b71999-10-05 12:57:50 +0000621 *) Fix for pkcs12 program. It was hashing an invalid certificate pointer
622 when producing the local key id.
623 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
624
Dr. Stephen Henson3908cdf1999-10-04 23:56:06 +0000625 *) New option -dhparam in s_server. This allows a DH parameter file to be
626 stated explicitly. If it is not stated then it tries the first server
627 certificate file. The previous behaviour hard coded the filename
628 "server.pem".
629 [Steve Henson]
630
Dr. Stephen Henson3ea23631999-10-04 21:17:47 +0000631 *) Add -pubin and -pubout options to the rsa and dsa commands. These allow
632 a public key to be input or output. For example:
633 openssl rsa -in key.pem -pubout -out pubkey.pem
634 Also added necessary DSA public key functions to handle this.
635 [Steve Henson]
636
Dr. Stephen Henson393f2c61999-10-04 12:08:59 +0000637 *) Fix so PKCS7_dataVerify() doesn't crash if no certificates are contained
638 in the message. This was handled by allowing
639 X509_find_by_issuer_and_serial() to tolerate a NULL passed to it.
640 [Steve Henson, reported by Sampo Kellomaki <sampo@mail.neuronio.pt>]
641
642 *) Fix for bug in d2i_ASN1_bytes(): other ASN1 functions add an extra null
643 to the end of the strings whereas this didn't. This would cause problems
644 if strings read with d2i_ASN1_bytes() were later modified.
645 [Steve Henson, reported by Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
646
Dr. Stephen Henson4579dd51999-10-02 13:33:06 +0000647 *) Fix for base64 decode bug. When a base64 bio reads only one line of
648 data and it contains EOF it will end up returning an error. This is
649 caused by input 46 bytes long. The cause is due to the way base64
650 BIOs find the start of base64 encoded data. They do this by trying a
651 trial decode on each line until they find one that works. When they
652 do a flag is set and it starts again knowing it can pass all the
653 data directly through the decoder. Unfortunately it doesn't reset
654 the context it uses. This means that if EOF is reached an attempt
655 is made to pass two EOFs through the context and this causes the
656 resulting error. This can also cause other problems as well. As is
657 usual with these problems it takes *ages* to find and the fix is
658 trivial: move one line.
659 [Steve Henson, reported by ian@uns.ns.ac.yu (Ivan Nejgebauer) ]
660
Dr. Stephen Henson06f45361999-09-20 22:09:17 +0000661 *) Ugly workaround to get s_client and s_server working under Windows. The
662 old code wouldn't work because it needed to select() on sockets and the
663 tty (for keypresses and to see if data could be written). Win32 only
664 supports select() on sockets so we select() with a 1s timeout on the
665 sockets and then see if any characters are waiting to be read, if none
666 are present then we retry, we also assume we can always write data to
667 the tty. This isn't nice because the code then blocks until we've
668 received a complete line of data and it is effectively polling the
669 keyboard at 1s intervals: however it's quite a bit better than not
670 working at all :-) A dedicated Windows application might handle this
671 with an event loop for example.
672 [Steve Henson]
673
Dr. Stephen Henson1c800191999-09-18 22:37:44 +0000674 *) Enhance RSA_METHOD structure. Now there are two extra methods, rsa_sign
675 and rsa_verify. When the RSA_FLAGS_SIGN_VER option is set these functions
676 will be called when RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() are used. This is useful
677 if rsa_pub_dec() and rsa_priv_enc() equivalents are not available.
678 For this to work properly RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt()
679 should *not* be used: RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() must be used instead.
680 This necessitated the support of an extra signature type NID_md5_sha1
681 for SSL signatures and modifications to the SSL library to use it instead
682 of calling RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt().
683 [Steve Henson]
684
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +0000685 *) Add new -verify -CAfile and -CApath options to the crl program, these
686 will lookup a CRL issuers certificate and verify the signature in a
687 similar way to the verify program. Tidy up the crl program so it
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000688 no longer accesses structures directly. Make the ASN1 CRL parsing a bit
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +0000689 less strict. It will now permit CRL extensions even if it is not
690 a V2 CRL: this will allow it to tolerate some broken CRLs.
691 [Steve Henson]
692
Bodo Möller396f6311999-09-08 21:58:13 +0000693 *) Initialize all non-automatic variables each time one of the openssl
694 sub-programs is started (this is necessary as they may be started
695 multiple times from the "OpenSSL>" prompt).
696 [Lennart Bang, Bodo Moeller]
697
Dr. Stephen Henson4a61a641999-09-08 18:02:25 +0000698 *) Preliminary compilation option RSA_NULL which disables RSA crypto without
699 removing all other RSA functionality (this is what NO_RSA does). This
700 is so (for example) those in the US can disable those operations covered
701 by the RSA patent while allowing storage and parsing of RSA keys and RSA
702 key generation.
703 [Steve Henson]
704
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +0000705 *) Non-copying interface to BIO pairs.
Bodo Möller6f7af151999-09-10 14:03:21 +0000706 (still largely untested)
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +0000707 [Bodo Moeller]
708
Dr. Stephen Hensona785abc1999-09-07 12:16:29 +0000709 *) New function ANS1_tag2str() to convert an ASN1 tag to a descriptive
710 ASCII string. This was handled independently in various places before.
711 [Steve Henson]
712
Dr. Stephen Hensonaef838f1999-09-04 17:19:55 +0000713 *) New functions UTF8_getc() and UTF8_putc() that parse and generate
714 UTF8 strings a character at a time.
715 [Steve Henson]
716
Bodo Möller074309b1999-09-03 16:33:11 +0000717 *) Use client_version from client hello to select the protocol
718 (s23_srvr.c) and for RSA client key exchange verification
719 (s3_srvr.c), as required by the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 specifications.
720 [Bodo Moeller]
721
Dr. Stephen Henson8ce97161999-09-03 01:08:34 +0000722 *) Add various utility functions to handle SPKACs, these were previously
723 handled by poking round in the structure internals. Added new function
724 NETSCAPE_SPKI_print() to print out SPKAC and a new utility 'spkac' to
725 print, verify and generate SPKACs. Based on an original idea from
726 Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@comune.modena.it> but extensively modified.
727 [Steve Henson]
728
Andy Polyakov2d4287d1999-08-28 13:18:25 +0000729 *) RIPEMD160 is operational on all platforms and is back in 'make test'.
730 [Andy Polyakov]
731
Dr. Stephen Henson87a25f91999-08-27 00:08:17 +0000732 *) Allow the config file extension section to be overwritten on the
733 command line. Based on an original idea from Massimiliano Pala
734 <madwolf@comune.modena.it>. The new option is called -extensions
735 and can be applied to ca, req and x509. Also -reqexts to override
736 the request extensions in req and -crlexts to override the crl extensions
737 in ca.
738 [Steve Henson]
739
Dr. Stephen Hensonf9150e51999-08-25 23:18:23 +0000740 *) Add new feature to the SPKAC handling in ca. Now you can include
741 the same field multiple times by preceding it by "XXXX." for example:
742 1.OU="Unit name 1"
743 2.OU="Unit name 2"
744 this is the same syntax as used in the req config file.
745 [Steve Henson]
746
Dr. Stephen Hensonc79b16e1999-08-25 16:59:26 +0000747 *) Allow certificate extensions to be added to certificate requests. These
748 are specified in a 'req_extensions' option of the req section of the
749 config file. They can be printed out with the -text option to req but
750 are otherwise ignored at present.
751 [Steve Henson]
752
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000753 *) Fix a horrible bug in enc_read() in crypto/evp/bio_enc.c: if the first
Bodo Möller0f7e6fe1999-09-24 20:24:24 +0000754 data read consists of only the final block it would not decrypted because
Dr. Stephen Henson7b65c321999-08-24 13:21:35 +0000755 EVP_CipherUpdate() would correctly report zero bytes had been decrypted.
756 A misplaced 'break' also meant the decrypted final block might not be
757 copied until the next read.
758 [Steve Henson]
759
Dr. Stephen Henson13066ce1999-08-23 23:11:32 +0000760 *) Initial support for DH_METHOD. Again based on RSA_METHOD. Also added
761 a few extra parameters to the DH structure: these will be useful if
762 for example we want the value of 'q' or implement X9.42 DH.
763 [Steve Henson]
764
Dr. Stephen Hensonc0711f71999-08-22 17:57:38 +0000765 *) Initial support for DSA_METHOD. This is based on the RSA_METHOD and
766 provides hooks that allow the default DSA functions or functions on a
767 "per key" basis to be replaced. This allows hardware acceleration and
768 hardware key storage to be handled without major modification to the
769 library. Also added low level modexp hooks and CRYPTO_EX structure and
770 associated functions.
771 [Steve Henson]
772
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +0000773 *) Add a new flag to memory BIOs, BIO_FLAG_MEM_RDONLY. This marks the BIO
774 as "read only": it can't be written to and the buffer it points to will
775 not be freed. Reading from a read only BIO is much more efficient than
776 a normal memory BIO. This was added because there are several times when
777 an area of memory needs to be read from a BIO. The previous method was
778 to create a memory BIO and write the data to it, this results in two
779 copies of the data and an O(n^2) reading algorithm. There is a new
780 function BIO_new_mem_buf() which creates a read only memory BIO from
781 an area of memory. Also modified the PKCS#7 routines to use read only
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000782 memory BIOs.
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +0000783 [Steve Henson]
784
Bodo Möllerde1915e1999-08-18 17:14:42 +0000785 *) Bugfix: ssl23_get_client_hello did not work properly when called in
786 state SSL23_ST_SR_CLNT_HELLO_B, i.e. when the first 7 bytes of
787 a SSLv2-compatible client hello for SSLv3 or TLSv1 could be read,
788 but a retry condition occured while trying to read the rest.
789 [Bodo Moeller]
790
Dr. Stephen Hensonc6c34501999-08-17 12:58:01 +0000791 *) The PKCS7_ENC_CONTENT_new() function was setting the content type as
792 NID_pkcs7_encrypted by default: this was wrong since this should almost
793 always be NID_pkcs7_data. Also modified the PKCS7_set_type() to handle
794 the encrypted data type: this is a more sensible place to put it and it
795 allows the PKCS#12 code to be tidied up that duplicated this
796 functionality.
797 [Steve Henson]
798
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +0000799 *) Changed obj_dat.pl script so it takes its input and output files on
800 the command line. This should avoid shell escape redirection problems
801 under Win32.
802 [Steve Henson]
803
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +0000804 *) Initial support for certificate extension requests, these are included
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +0000805 in things like Xenroll certificate requests. Included functions to allow
806 extensions to be obtained and added.
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +0000807 [Steve Henson]
808
Bodo Möller1b1a6e71999-08-09 13:01:48 +0000809 *) -crlf option to s_client and s_server for sending newlines as
810 CRLF (as required by many protocols).
811 [Bodo Moeller]
812
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +0000813 Changes between 0.9.3a and 0.9.4 [09 Aug 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +0000814
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +0000815 *) Install libRSAglue.a when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +0000816 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000817
Ralf S. Engelschall96395151999-08-08 10:15:43 +0000818 *) A few more ``#ifndef NO_FP_API / #endif'' pairs for consistency.
819 [Andrija Antonijevic <TheAntony2@bigfoot.com>]
820
Dr. Stephen Hensoned7f60f1999-08-06 21:47:09 +0000821 *) Fix -startdate and -enddate (which was missing) arguments to 'ca'
822 program.
823 [Steve Henson]
824
Bodo Möller48c843c1999-08-05 11:50:18 +0000825 *) New function DSA_dup_DH, which duplicates DSA parameters/keys as
826 DH parameters/keys (q is lost during that conversion, but the resulting
827 DH parameters contain its length).
828
829 For 1024-bit p, DSA_generate_parameters followed by DSA_dup_DH is
830 much faster than DH_generate_parameters (which creates parameters
831 where p = 2*q + 1), and also the smaller q makes DH computations
832 much more efficient (160-bit exponentiation instead of 1024-bit
833 exponentiation); so this provides a convenient way to support DHE
834 ciphersuites in SSL/TLS servers (see ssl/ssltest.c). It is of
835 utter importance to use
836 SSL_CTX_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
837 or
838 SSL_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
839 when such DH parameters are used, because otherwise small subgroup
840 attacks may become possible!
841 [Bodo Moeller]
842
843 *) Avoid memory leak in i2d_DHparams.
844 [Bodo Moeller]
845
Dr. Stephen Henson922180d1999-07-30 01:12:46 +0000846 *) Allow the -k option to be used more than once in the enc program:
847 this allows the same encrypted message to be read by multiple recipients.
848 [Steve Henson]
849
Dr. Stephen Henson3e3d2ea1999-07-27 22:22:58 +0000850 *) New function OBJ_obj2txt(buf, buf_len, a, no_name), this converts
851 an ASN1_OBJECT to a text string. If the "no_name" parameter is set then
852 it will always use the numerical form of the OID, even if it has a short
853 or long name.
854 [Steve Henson]
855
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +0000856 *) Added an extra RSA flag: RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY. Previously the rsa_mod_exp
857 method only got called if p,q,dmp1,dmq1,iqmp components were present,
858 otherwise bn_mod_exp was called. In the case of hardware keys for example
859 no private key components need be present and it might store extra data
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000860 in the RSA structure, which cannot be accessed from bn_mod_exp.
861 By setting RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY rsa_mod_exp will always be called for
862 private key operations.
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +0000863 [Steve Henson]
864
Andy Polyakova0618e31999-07-25 15:13:49 +0000865 *) Added support for SPARC Linux.
866 [Andy Polyakov]
867
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000868 *) pem_password_cb function type incompatibly changed from
869 typedef int pem_password_cb(char *buf, int size, int rwflag);
870 to
871 ....(char *buf, int size, int rwflag, void *userdata);
872 so that applications can pass data to their callbacks:
873 The PEM[_ASN1]_{read,write}... functions and macros now take an
874 additional void * argument, which is just handed through whenever
875 the password callback is called.
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +0000876 [Damien Miller <dmiller@ilogic.com.au>; tiny changes by Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +0000877
878 New function SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata.
879
880 Compatibility note: As many C implementations push function arguments
881 onto the stack in reverse order, the new library version is likely to
882 interoperate with programs that have been compiled with the old
883 pem_password_cb definition (PEM_whatever takes some data that
884 happens to be on the stack as its last argument, and the callback
885 just ignores this garbage); but there is no guarantee whatsoever that
886 this will work.
Bodo Möller0cceb1c1999-05-30 23:54:52 +0000887
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +0000888 *) The -DPLATFORM="\"$(PLATFORM)\"" definition and the similar -DCFLAGS=...
889 (both in crypto/Makefile.ssl for use by crypto/cversion.c) caused
890 problems not only on Windows, but also on some Unix platforms.
Bodo Möller2e0fc871999-07-27 09:10:36 +0000891 To avoid problematic command lines, these definitions are now in an
Bodo Möller57119941999-07-29 12:57:23 +0000892 auto-generated file crypto/buildinf.h (created by crypto/Makefile.ssl
893 for standard "make" builds, by util/mk1mf.pl for "mk1mf" builds).
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +0000894 [Bodo Moeller]
895
Andy Polyakov73634551999-07-20 15:50:20 +0000896 *) MIPS III/IV assembler module is reimplemented.
897 [Andy Polyakov]
898
Ulf Möller64344501999-07-16 00:50:45 +0000899 *) More DES library cleanups: remove references to srand/rand and
900 delete an unused file.
901 [Ulf Möller]
902
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +0000903 *) Add support for the the free Netwide assembler (NASM) under Win32,
904 since not many people have MASM (ml) and it can be hard to obtain.
905 This is currently experimental but it seems to work OK and pass all
906 the tests. Check out INSTALL.W32 for info.
907 [Steve Henson]
908
Bodo Möller50596581999-07-12 17:15:42 +0000909 *) Fix memory leaks in s3_clnt.c: All non-anonymous SSL3/TLS1 connections
910 without temporary keys kept an extra copy of the server key,
911 and connections with temporary keys did not free everything in case
912 of an error.
913 [Bodo Moeller]
914
Bodo Möller03cd4941999-07-11 22:00:55 +0000915 *) New function RSA_check_key and new openssl rsa option -check
916 for verifying the consistency of RSA keys.
917 [Ulf Moeller, Bodo Moeller]
918
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +0000919 *) Various changes to make Win32 compile work:
920 1. Casts to avoid "loss of data" warnings in p5_crpt2.c
921 2. Change unsigned int to int in b_dump.c to avoid "signed/unsigned
922 comparison" warnings.
923 3. Add sk_<TYPE>_sort to DEF file generator and do make update.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +0000924 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +0000925
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5139391999-07-11 12:40:46 +0000926 *) Add a debugging option to PKCS#5 v2 key generation function: when
927 you #define DEBUG_PKCS5V2 passwords, salts, iteration counts and
928 derived keys are printed to stderr.
929 [Steve Henson]
930
Dr. Stephen Henson0ab8beb1999-07-11 12:30:55 +0000931 *) Copy the flags in ASN1_STRING_dup().
932 [Roman E. Pavlov <pre@mo.msk.ru>]
933
Dr. Stephen Hensonf7daafa1999-07-11 01:48:21 +0000934 *) The x509 application mishandled signing requests containing DSA
935 keys when the signing key was also DSA and the parameters didn't match.
936
937 It was supposed to omit the parameters when they matched the signing key:
938 the verifying software was then supposed to automatically use the CA's
939 parameters if they were absent from the end user certificate.
940
941 Omitting parameters is no longer recommended. The test was also
942 the wrong way round! This was probably due to unusual behaviour in
943 EVP_cmp_parameters() which returns 1 if the parameters match.
944 This meant that parameters were omitted when they *didn't* match and
945 the certificate was useless. Certificates signed with 'ca' didn't have
946 this bug.
947 [Steve Henson, reported by Doug Erickson <Doug.Erickson@Part.NET>]
948
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +0000949 *) Memory leak checking (-DCRYPTO_MDEBUG) had some problems.
950 The interface is as follows:
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +0000951 Applications can use
952 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ON) aka MemCheck_start(),
953 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_OFF) aka MemCheck_stop();
954 "off" is now the default.
955 The library internally uses
956 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_DISABLE) aka MemCheck_off(),
957 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ENABLE) aka MemCheck_on()
958 to disable memory-checking temporarily.
959
960 Some inconsistent states that previously were possible (and were
961 even the default) are now avoided.
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +0000962
963 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_TIME is new and additionally stores the current time
964 with each memory chunk allocated; this is occasionally more helpful
965 than just having a counter.
Bodo Möllere3911161999-07-19 10:36:10 +0000966
967 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_THREAD is also new and adds the thread ID.
968
969 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_ALL enables all of the above, plus any future
970 extensions.
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +0000971 [Bodo Moeller]
972
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +0000973 *) Introduce "mode" for SSL structures (with defaults in SSL_CTX),
974 which largely parallels "options", but is for changing API behaviour,
975 whereas "options" are about protocol behaviour.
Bodo Möller9c962481999-07-19 12:59:12 +0000976 Initial "mode" flags are:
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +0000977
978 SSL_MODE_ENABLE_PARTIAL_WRITE Allow SSL_write to report success when
979 a single record has been written.
980 SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER Don't insist that SSL_write
981 retries use the same buffer location.
982 (But all of the contents must be
983 copied!)
984 [Bodo Moeller]
985
986 *) Bugfix: SSL_set_mode ignored its parameter, only SSL_CTX_set_mode
987 worked.
988
Ulf Möller5271ebd1999-06-30 00:42:56 +0000989 *) Fix problems with no-hmac etc.
990 [Ulf Möller, pointed out by Brian Wellington <bwelling@tislabs.com>]
991
Dr. Stephen Hensonce8b2571999-06-29 22:22:42 +0000992 *) New functions RSA_get_default_method(), RSA_set_method() and
993 RSA_get_method(). These allows replacement of RSA_METHODs without having
994 to mess around with the internals of an RSA structure.
995 [Steve Henson]
996
Bodo Möller9c729e01999-06-25 14:04:10 +0000997 *) Fix memory leaks in DSA_do_sign and DSA_is_prime.
998 Also really enable memory leak checks in openssl.c and in some
999 test programs.
1000 [Chad C. Mulligan, Bodo Moeller]
1001
Dr. Stephen Henson034292a1999-06-24 01:50:27 +00001002 *) Fix a bug in d2i_ASN1_INTEGER() and i2d_ASN1_INTEGER() which can mess
1003 up the length of negative integers. This has now been simplified to just
1004 store the length when it is first determined and use it later, rather
1005 than trying to keep track of where data is copied and updating it to
1006 point to the end.
1007 [Steve Henson, reported by Brien Wheeler
1008 <bwheeler@authentica-security.com>]
1009
Dr. Stephen Henson170afce1999-06-22 13:33:22 +00001010 *) Add a new function PKCS7_signatureVerify. This allows the verification
1011 of a PKCS#7 signature but with the signing certificate passed to the
1012 function itself. This contrasts with PKCS7_dataVerify which assumes the
1013 certificate is present in the PKCS#7 structure. This isn't always the
1014 case: certificates can be omitted from a PKCS#7 structure and be
1015 distributed by "out of band" means (such as a certificate database).
1016 [Steve Henson]
1017
Dr. Stephen Hensondbd665c1999-06-22 01:38:31 +00001018 *) Complete the PEM_* macros with DECLARE_PEM versions to replace the
1019 function prototypes in pem.h, also change util/mkdef.pl to add the
1020 necessary function names.
1021 [Steve Henson]
1022
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00001023 *) mk1mf.pl (used by Windows builds) did not properly read the
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00001024 options set by Configure in the top level Makefile, and Configure
Bodo Möller975d3dc1999-07-09 13:02:14 +00001025 was not even able to write more than one option correctly.
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00001026 Fixed, now "no-idea no-rc5 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG" etc. works as intended.
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00001027 [Bodo Moeller]
1028
Dr. Stephen Henson8623f691999-06-20 17:36:11 +00001029 *) New functions CONF_load_bio() and CONF_load_fp() to allow a config
1030 file to be loaded from a BIO or FILE pointer. The BIO version will
1031 for example allow memory BIOs to contain config info.
1032 [Steve Henson]
1033
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00001034 *) New function "CRYPTO_num_locks" that returns CRYPTO_NUM_LOCKS.
1035 Whoever hopes to achieve shared-library compatibility across versions
1036 must use this, not the compile-time macro.
Bodo Möller11af1a21999-06-18 18:22:38 +00001037 (Exercise 0.9.4: Which is the minimum library version required by
1038 such programs?)
1039 Note: All this applies only to multi-threaded programs, others don't
1040 need locks.
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00001041 [Bodo Moeller]
1042
Bodo Möller95d29591999-06-12 01:03:40 +00001043 *) Add missing case to s3_clnt.c state machine -- one of the new SSL tests
1044 through a BIO pair triggered the default case, i.e.
1045 SSLerr(...,SSL_R_UNKNOWN_STATE).
1046 [Bodo Moeller]
1047
1048 *) New "BIO pair" concept (crypto/bio/bss_bio.c) so that applications
1049 can use the SSL library even if none of the specific BIOs is
1050 appropriate.
1051 [Bodo Moeller]
1052
Dr. Stephen Henson9bce3071999-06-11 22:30:45 +00001053 *) Fix a bug in i2d_DSAPublicKey() which meant it returned the wrong value
1054 for the encoded length.
1055 [Jeon KyoungHo <khjeon@sds.samsung.co.kr>]
1056
Dr. Stephen Henson565d1061999-06-11 01:58:42 +00001057 *) Add initial documentation of the X509V3 functions.
1058 [Steve Henson]
1059
Dr. Stephen Hensonb7d135b1999-06-10 17:32:52 +00001060 *) Add a new pair of functions PEM_write_PKCS8PrivateKey() and
1061 PEM_write_bio_PKCS8PrivateKey() that are equivalent to
1062 PEM_write_PrivateKey() and PEM_write_bio_PrivateKey() but use the more
1063 secure PKCS#8 private key format with a high iteration count.
1064 [Steve Henson]
1065
Ralf S. Engelschall9d9b5591999-06-10 08:13:52 +00001066 *) Fix determination of Perl interpreter: A perl or perl5
1067 _directory_ in $PATH was also accepted as the interpreter.
1068 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1069
Dr. Stephen Henson5f6d0ea1999-06-09 23:33:48 +00001070 *) Fix demos/sign/sign.c: well there wasn't anything strictly speaking
1071 wrong with it but it was very old and did things like calling
1072 PEM_ASN1_read() directly and used MD5 for the hash not to mention some
1073 unusual formatting.
1074 [Steve Henson]
1075
Dr. Stephen Hensonf62676b1999-06-09 18:05:30 +00001076 *) Fix demos/selfsign.c: it used obsolete and deleted functions, changed
1077 to use the new extension code.
1078 [Steve Henson]
1079
1080 *) Implement the PEM_read/PEM_write functions in crypto/pem/pem_all.c
1081 with macros. This should make it easier to change their form, add extra
1082 arguments etc. Fix a few PEM prototypes which didn't have cipher as a
1083 constant.
1084 [Steve Henson]
1085
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00001086 *) Add to configuration table a new entry that can specify an alternative
1087 name for unistd.h (for pre-POSIX systems); we need this for NeXTstep,
1088 according to Mark Crispin <MRC@Panda.COM>.
1089 [Bodo Moeller]

Ben Laurie233bf731999-06-09 10:19:53 +00001100 *) When bntest is run from "make test" it drives bc to check its
1101 calculations, as well as internally checking them. If an internal check
1102 fails, it needs to cause bc to give a non-zero result or make test carries
1103 on without noticing the failure. Fixed.
1104 [Ben Laurie]
1105
Ulf Möller908eb7b1999-06-08 16:35:11 +00001106 *) DES library cleanups.
1107 [Ulf Möller]
1108
Dr. Stephen Henson8eb57af1999-06-08 00:09:51 +00001109 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 PBE algorithms. This will permit PKCS#8 to be
1110 used with any cipher unlike PKCS#5 v1.5 which can at most handle 64 bit
1111 ciphers. NOTE: although the key derivation function has been verified
1112 against some published test vectors it has not been extensively tested
1113 yet. Added a -v2 "cipher" option to pkcs8 application to allow the use
1114 of v2.0.
1115 [Steve Henson]
1116
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00001117 *) Instead of "mkdir -p", which is not fully portable, use new

Dr. Stephen Henson69cbf461999-06-06 13:07:13 +00001121 *) Rewrite the way password based encryption (PBE) is handled. It used to
1122 assume that the ASN1 AlgorithmIdentifier parameter was a PBEParameter
1123 structure. This was true for the PKCS#5 v1.5 and PKCS#12 PBE algorithms
1124 but doesn't apply to PKCS#5 v2.0 where it can be something else. Now
1125 the 'parameter' field of the AlgorithmIdentifier is passed to the
1126 underlying key generation function so it must do its own ASN1 parsing.
1127 This has also changed the EVP_PBE_CipherInit() function which now has a
1128 'parameter' argument instead of literal salt and iteration count values
1129 and the function EVP_PBE_ALGOR_CipherInit() has been deleted.
1130 [Steve Henson]
1131
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00001132 *) Support for PKCS#5 v1.5 compatible password based encryption algorithms
Dr. Stephen Hensone7871ff1999-06-05 12:39:10 +00001133 and PKCS#8 functionality. New 'pkcs8' application linked to openssl.
1134 Needed to change the PEM_STRING_EVP_PKEY value which was just "PRIVATE
1135 KEY" because this clashed with PKCS#8 unencrypted string. Since this
1136 value was just used as a "magic string" and not used directly its
1137 value doesn't matter.
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00001138 [Steve Henson]
1139
Ben Laurie84c15db1999-06-04 22:23:10 +00001140 *) Introduce some semblance of const correctness to BN. Shame C doesn't

1150 [Ulf Möller]
1151
1152 *) Support the EBCDIC character set (work in progress).
1153 File ebcdic.c not yet included because it has a different license.
1154 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
1155

1166 [Ben Laurie]
1167
Bodo Möller885982d1999-06-04 21:46:35 +00001168 *) New configuration variants "bsdi-elf-gcc" (BSD/OS 4.x).

1183 [Steve Henson]
1184
Bodo Möller472bde41999-05-27 20:49:27 +00001185 *) Updates for Win32 to assembler version of MD5.
1186 [Steve Henson]
1187
1188 *) Set #! path to perl in apps/der_chop to where we found it
1189 instead of using a fixed path.
1190 [Bodo Moeller]
1191
1192 *) SHA library changes for irix64-mips4-cc.

Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00001200
Ulf Möllere14d4441999-05-20 01:43:07 +00001201 *) Bignum library bug fix. IRIX 6 passes "make test" now!
1202 This also avoids the problems with SC4.2 and unpatched SC5.
1203 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1204
Dr. Stephen Hensone84240d1999-05-19 12:45:16 +00001205 *) New functions sk_num, sk_value and sk_set to replace the previous macros.
1206 These are required because of the typesafe stack would otherwise break
1207 existing code. If old code used a structure member which used to be STACK
1208 and is now STACK_OF (for example cert in a PKCS7_SIGNED structure) with
1209 sk_num or sk_value it would produce an error because the num, data members
1210 are not present in STACK_OF. Now it just produces a warning. sk_set
1211 replaces the old method of assigning a value to sk_value
1212 (e.g. sk_value(x, i) = y) which the library used in a few cases. Any code
1213 that does this will no longer work (and should use sk_set instead) but
1214 this could be regarded as a "questionable" behaviour anyway.
1215 [Steve Henson]
1216
Dr. Stephen Henson1b266da1999-05-16 17:32:32 +00001217 *) Fix most of the other PKCS#7 bugs. The "experimental" code can now
1218 correctly handle encrypted S/MIME data.
1219 [Steve Henson]
1220
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00001221 *) Change type of various DES function arguments from des_cblock
Bodo Möllerf43c8141999-05-16 14:20:17 +00001222 (which means, in function argument declarations, pointer to char)
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00001223 to des_cblock * (meaning pointer to array with 8 char elements),
1224 which allows the compiler to do more typechecking; it was like
1225 that back in SSLeay, but with lots of ugly casts.
1226
1227 Introduce new type const_des_cblock.
1228 [Bodo Moeller]
1229
Dr. Stephen Henson84fa7041999-05-16 00:25:36 +00001230 *) Reorganise the PKCS#7 library and get rid of some of the more obvious
1231 problems: find RecipientInfo structure that matches recipient certificate
1232 and initialise the ASN1 structures properly based on passed cipher.
1233 [Steve Henson]
1234
Ben Laurie62bad771999-05-15 15:59:28 +00001235 *) Belatedly make the BN tests actually check the results.
1236 [Ben Laurie]
1237
Dr. Stephen Henson1ad2ecb1999-05-14 18:21:21 +00001238 *) Fix the encoding and decoding of negative ASN1 INTEGERS and conversion
1239 to and from BNs: it was completely broken. New compilation option
1240 NEG_PUBKEY_BUG to allow for some broken certificates that encode public
1241 key elements as negative integers.
1242 [Steve Henson]
1243
Ulf Möllerbd3576d1999-05-13 13:16:42 +00001244 *) Reorganize and speed up MD5.
1245 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1246
Ulf Möller7d7d2cb1999-05-13 11:37:32 +00001247 *) VMS support.
1248 [Richard Levitte <richard@levitte.org>]
1249
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5eac851999-05-12 01:56:27 +00001250 *) New option -out to asn1parse to allow the parsed structure to be
1251 output to a file. This is most useful when combined with the -strparse
1252 option to examine the output of things like OCTET STRINGS.
1253 [Steve Henson]
1254
Bodo Möllerb31b04d1999-05-11 07:43:16 +00001255 *) Make SSL library a little more fool-proof by not requiring any longer
1256 that SSL_set_{accept,connect}_state be called before
1257 SSL_{accept,connect} may be used (SSL_set_..._state is omitted
1258 in many applications because usually everything *appeared* to work as
1259 intended anyway -- now it really works as intended).
1260 [Bodo Moeller]
1261
Ulf Möllerd5a2ea41999-05-10 23:59:28 +00001262 *) Move openssl.cnf out of lib/.
1263 [Ulf Möller]
1264
Ralf S. Engelschall397f7031999-05-10 08:33:56 +00001265 *) Fix various things to let OpenSSL even pass ``egcc -pipe -O2 -Wall
1266 -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wmissing-prototypes
1267 -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Winline'' with EGCS 1.1.2+
1268 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1269
Dr. Stephen Henson884e8ec1999-05-10 00:47:42 +00001270 *) Various fixes to the EVP and PKCS#7 code. It may now be able to
1271 handle PKCS#7 enveloped data properly.
1272 [Sebastian Akerman <sak@parallelconsulting.com>, modified by Steve]
1273
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00001274 *) Create a duplicate of the SSL_CTX's CERT in SSL_new instead of
1275 copying pointers. The cert_st handling is changed by this in
1276 various ways (and thus what used to be known as ctx->default_cert
1277 is now called ctx->cert, since we don't resort to s->ctx->[default_]cert
1278 any longer when s->cert does not give us what we need).
1279 ssl_cert_instantiate becomes obsolete by this change.
1280 As soon as we've got the new code right (possibly it already is?),
1281 we have solved a couple of bugs of the earlier code where s->cert
1282 was used as if it could not have been shared with other SSL structures.
1283
1284 Note that using the SSL API in certain dirty ways now will result
1285 in different behaviour than observed with earlier library versions:
1286 Changing settings for an SSL_CTX *ctx after having done s = SSL_new(ctx)
1287 does not influence s as it used to.
1288
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00001289 In order to clean up things more thoroughly, inside SSL_SESSION
Bodo Möllerb56bce41999-05-13 15:09:38 +00001290 we don't use CERT any longer, but a new structure SESS_CERT
1291 that holds per-session data (if available); currently, this is
1292 the peer's certificate chain and, for clients, the server's certificate
1293 and temporary key. CERT holds only those values that can have
1294 meaningful defaults in an SSL_CTX.
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00001295 [Bodo Moeller]
1296
Dr. Stephen Hensonc8b41851999-05-09 16:39:11 +00001297 *) New function X509V3_EXT_i2d() to create an X509_EXTENSION structure
1298 from the internal representation. Various PKCS#7 fixes: remove some
1299 evil casts and set the enc_dig_alg field properly based on the signing
1300 key type.
1301 [Steve Henson]
1302
Dr. Stephen Hensone40b7ab1999-05-08 12:59:50 +00001303 *) Allow PKCS#12 password to be set from the command line or the
1304 environment. Let 'ca' get its config file name from the environment
1305 variables "OPENSSL_CONF" or "SSLEAY_CONF" (for consistency with 'req'
1306 and 'x509').
1307 [Steve Henson]
1308
1309 *) Allow certificate policies extension to use an IA5STRING for the
1310 organization field. This is contrary to the PKIX definition but
1311 VeriSign uses it and IE5 only recognises this form. Document 'x509'
1312 extension option.
1313 [Steve Henson]
1314
Ben Laurie5b640021999-05-07 15:42:23 +00001315 *) Add PEDANTIC compiler flag to allow compilation with gcc -pedantic,
1316 without disallowing inline assembler and the like for non-pedantic builds.
1317 [Ben Laurie]
1318
Ulf Möller31a674d1999-05-06 00:46:34 +00001319 *) Support Borland C++ builder.
1320 [Janez Jere <jj@void.si>, modified by Ulf Möller]
1321
1322 *) Support Mingw32.
1323 [Ulf Möller]
1324
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00001325 *) SHA-1 cleanups and performance enhancements.
1326 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1327
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00001328 *) Sparc v8plus assembler for the bignum library.

Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00001330
Ulf Möllerafd1f9e1999-05-04 11:52:26 +00001331 *) Accept any -xxx and +xxx compiler options in Configure.
1332 [Ulf Möller]
1333
1334 *) Update HPUX configuration.
1335 [Anonymous]
1336
Ralf S. Engelschalldee75ec1999-05-04 10:15:02 +00001337 *) Add missing sk_<type>_unshift() function to safestack.h
1338 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1339
Bodo Möllerb3ca6451999-05-01 17:43:52 +00001340 *) New function SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file that sets the
1341 "extra_cert"s in addition to the certificate. (This makes sense
1342 only for "PEM" format files, as chains as a whole are not
1343 DER-encoded.)
1344 [Bodo Moeller]
1345
Bodo Möller7f897141999-05-01 03:20:40 +00001346 *) Support verify_depth from the SSL API.
1347 x509_vfy.c had what can be considered an off-by-one-error:
1348 Its depth (which was not part of the external interface)
1349 was actually counting the number of certificates in a chain;
1350 now it really counts the depth.
1351 [Bodo Moeller]
1352
Bodo Möllerdc1f6071999-05-01 20:16:35 +00001353 *) Bugfix in crypto/x509/x509_cmp.c: The SSLerr macro was used
1354 instead of X509err, which often resulted in confusing error
1355 messages since the error codes are not globally unique
1356 (e.g. an alleged error in ssl3_accept when a certificate
1357 didn't match the private key).
1358
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00001359 *) New function SSL_CTX_set_session_id_context that allows to set a default
Bodo Möllerdd1462f1999-05-01 00:07:42 +00001360 value (so that you don't need SSL_set_session_id_context for each
1361 connection using the SSL_CTX).
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00001362 [Bodo Moeller]
1363
Ulf Möllerc6652741999-04-29 21:56:13 +00001364 *) OAEP decoding bug fix.
1365 [Ulf Möller]
1366
Bodo Möllere5f30451999-04-29 21:52:08 +00001367 *) Support INSTALL_PREFIX for package builders, as proposed by
1368 David Harris.
1369 [Bodo Moeller]
1370
Bodo Möller87bc2c01999-04-29 16:10:41 +00001371 *) New Configure options "threads" and "no-threads". For systems
1372 where the proper compiler options are known (currently Solaris
1373 and Linux), "threads" is the default.
1374 [Bodo Moeller]
1375
Bodo Möller6e6acfd1999-04-28 22:33:54 +00001376 *) New script util/mklink.pl as a faster substitute for util/mklink.sh.
1377 [Bodo Moeller]
1378
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00001379 *) Install various scripts to $(OPENSSLDIR)/misc, not to
1380 $(INSTALLTOP)/bin -- they shouldn't clutter directories
1381 such as /usr/local/bin.
1382 [Bodo Moeller]
1383
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00001384 *) "make linux-shared" to build shared libraries.
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00001385 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00001386
Ulf Möllerf5d7a031999-04-27 01:14:46 +00001387 *) New Configure option no-<cipher> (rsa, idea, rc5, ...).
1388 [Ulf Möller]
1389
Dr. Stephen Hensonb64f8251999-04-27 00:36:20 +00001390 *) Add the PKCS#12 API documentation to openssl.txt. Preliminary support for
1391 extension adding in x509 utility.
1392 [Steve Henson]
1393
Ulf Möllera9be3af1999-04-26 16:43:10 +00001394 *) Remove NOPROTO sections and error code comments.
1395 [Ulf Möller]
1396
Dr. Stephen Henson47339f61999-04-26 00:23:10 +00001397 *) Partial rewrite of the DEF file generator to now parse the ANSI
1398 prototypes.
1399 [Steve Henson]
1400
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00001401 *) New Configure options --prefix=DIR and --openssldir=DIR.
Ulf Möller9c4711c1999-04-24 23:39:52 +00001402 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00001403
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00001404 *) Complete rewrite of the error code script(s). It is all now handled
1405 by one script at the top level which handles error code gathering,
1406 header rewriting and C source file generation. It should be much better
1407 than the old method: it now uses a modified version of Ulf's parser to
1408 read the ANSI prototypes in all header files (thus the old K&R definitions
1409 aren't needed for error creation any more) and do a better job of
1410 translating function codes into names. The old 'ASN1 error code imbedded
1411 in a comment' is no longer necessary and it doesn't use .err files which
Dr. Stephen Henson6e781e81999-04-24 13:28:57 +00001412 have now been deleted. Also the error code call doesn't have to appear all
1413 on one line (which resulted in some large lines...).
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00001414 [Steve Henson]
1415
Bodo Möller018b4ee1999-04-23 22:38:22 +00001416 *) Change #include filenames from <foo.h> to <openssl/foo.h>.
Bodo Möller92df9601999-04-23 22:20:21 +00001417 [Bodo Moeller]
1418
Bodo Möller85f48f71999-04-22 14:28:38 +00001419 *) Change behaviour of ssl2_read when facing length-0 packets: Don't return
1420 0 (which usually indicates a closed connection), but continue reading.
1421 [Bodo Moeller]
1422
Bodo Möller90b8bbb1999-04-22 13:38:03 +00001423 *) Fix some race conditions.
1424 [Bodo Moeller]
1425
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00001426 *) Add support for CRL distribution points extension. Add Certificate
1427 Policies and CRL distribution points documentation.
1428 [Steve Henson]
1429
Ulf Möller8e10f2b1999-04-21 17:31:05 +00001430 *) Move the autogenerated header file parts to crypto/opensslconf.h.
1431 [Ulf Möller]
1432
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00001433 *) Fix new 56-bit DES export ciphersuites: they were using 7 bytes instead of
1434 8 of keying material. Merlin has also confirmed interop with this fix
1435 between OpenSSL and Baltimore C/SSL 2.0 and J/SSL 2.0.
1436 [Merlin Hughes <merlin@baltimore.ie>]
1437
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00001438 *) Fix lots of warnings.
1439 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1440
1441 *) In add_cert_dir() in crypto/x509/by_dir.c, break out of the loop if
1442 the directory spec didn't end with a LIST_SEPARATOR_CHAR.
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00001443 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00001444

1446 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1447
Ulf Möller6b691a51999-04-19 21:31:43 +00001448 *) Change functions to ANSI C.
1449 [Ulf Möller]
1450
Ulf Möllerdf82f5c1999-04-19 14:45:02 +00001451 *) Fix typos in error codes.
1452 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>, Ulf Möller]
1453
Ulf Möller22a4f961999-04-19 13:54:11 +00001454 *) Remove defunct assembler files from Configure.
1455 [Ulf Möller]
1456
Ulf Möller5e85b6a1999-04-19 13:41:45 +00001457 *) SPARC v8 assembler BIGNUM implementation.
1458 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1459
Dr. Stephen Henson3edd7ed1999-04-19 17:55:11 +00001460 *) Support for Certificate Policies extension: both print and set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00001461 Various additions to support the r2i method this uses.
Dr. Stephen Henson41b731f1999-04-18 23:21:03 +00001462 [Steve Henson]
1463
Ben Lauriee7788021999-04-17 21:25:43 +00001464 *) A lot of constification, and fix a bug in X509_NAME_oneline() that could
1465 return a const string when you are expecting an allocated buffer.
1466 [Ben Laurie]
1467
Dr. Stephen Hensonc83e5231999-04-17 23:55:39 +00001468 *) Add support for ASN1 types UTF8String and VISIBLESTRING, also the CHOICE
1469 types DirectoryString and DisplayText.
Dr. Stephen Hensond77b3051999-04-17 15:53:32 +00001470 [Steve Henson]
1471
Dr. Stephen Henson1d48dd01999-04-16 23:57:04 +00001472 *) Add code to allow r2i extensions to access the configuration database,
1473 add an LHASH database driver and add several ctx helper functions.
1474 [Steve Henson]
1475
Dr. Stephen Henson953937b1999-04-15 23:07:00 +00001476 *) Fix an evil bug in bn_expand2() which caused various BN functions to
1477 fail when they extended the size of a BIGNUM.
1478 [Steve Henson]
1479
Dr. Stephen Henson28a98801999-04-14 23:44:41 +00001480 *) Various utility functions to handle SXNet extension. Modify mkdef.pl to
1481 support typesafe stack.
1482 [Steve Henson]
1483
Ben Laurie8f7de4f1999-04-14 11:13:47 +00001484 *) Fix typo in SSL_[gs]et_options().
1485 [Nils Frostberg <nils@medcom.se>]
1486
Dr. Stephen Henson0490a861999-04-13 23:56:39 +00001487 *) Delete various functions and files that belonged to the (now obsolete)
1488 old X509V3 handling code.
1489 [Steve Henson]
1490
Ulf Möller5fbe91d1999-04-13 00:58:49 +00001491 *) New Configure option "rsaref".
1492 [Ulf Möller]
1493
Bodo Möller5fd4e2b1999-04-12 19:58:17 +00001494 *) Don't auto-generate pem.h.
1495 [Bodo Moeller]
1496
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00001497 *) Introduce type-safe ASN.1 SETs.
1498 [Ben Laurie]
1499
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00001500 *) Convert various additional casted stacks to type-safe STACK_OF() variants.
Ben Laurie135a1dc1999-05-07 09:18:25 +00001501 [Ben Laurie, Ralf S. Engelschall, Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00001502
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00001503 *) Introduce type-safe STACKs. This will almost certainly break lots of code
1504 that links with OpenSSL (well at least cause lots of warnings), but fear
1505 not: the conversion is trivial, and it eliminates loads of evil casts. A
1506 few STACKed things have been converted already. Feel free to convert more.
1507 In the fullness of time, I'll do away with the STACK type altogether.
1508 [Ben Laurie]
1509
Ralf S. Engelschallf9a25931999-04-12 11:45:14 +00001510 *) Add `openssl ca -revoke <certfile>' facility which revokes a certificate
1511 specified in <certfile> by updating the entry in the index.txt file.
1512 This way one no longer has to edit the index.txt file manually for
1513 revoking a certificate. The -revoke option does the gory details now.
1514 [Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@openca.org>, Ralf S. Engelschall]
1515
Ralf S. Engelschall2f0cd191999-04-12 10:36:16 +00001516 *) Fix `openssl crl -noout -text' combination where `-noout' killed the
1517 `-text' option at all and this way the `-noout -text' combination was
1518 inconsistent in `openssl crl' with the friends in `openssl x509|rsa|dsa'.
1519 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1520
Ralf S. Engelschall268c2101999-04-12 09:59:05 +00001521 *) Make sure a corresponding plain text error message exists for the
1522 X509_V_ERR_CERT_REVOKED/23 error number which can occur when a
1523 verify callback function determined that a certificate was revoked.
1524 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1525
Bodo Möllerfc8ee061999-04-11 02:49:35 +00001526 *) Bugfix: In test/testenc, don't test "openssl <cipher>" for
1527 ciphers that were excluded, e.g. by -DNO_IDEA. Also, test
1528 all available cipers including rc5, which was forgotten until now.
1529 In order to let the testing shell script know which algorithms
1530 are available, a new (up to now undocumented) command
1531 "openssl list-cipher-commands" is used.
1532 [Bodo Moeller]
1533
Bodo Möllerc7ac31e1999-04-09 20:54:25 +00001534 *) Bugfix: s_client occasionally would sleep in select() when
1535 it should have checked SSL_pending() first.
1536 [Bodo Moeller]
1537
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00001538 *) New functions DSA_do_sign and DSA_do_verify to provide access to
1539 the raw DSA values prior to ASN.1 encoding.
1540 [Ulf Möller]
1541
1542 *) Tweaks to Configure
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00001543 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00001544
Dr. Stephen Hensond2e26dc1999-04-08 23:55:42 +00001545 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 ASN1 PBES2 structures. No other support,
1546 yet...
1547 [Steve Henson]
1548
Ulf Möller99aab161999-04-01 12:34:33 +00001549 *) New variables $(RANLIB) and $(PERL) in the Makefiles.
1550 [Ulf Möller]
1551
Ulf Möller2613c1f1999-03-31 12:38:27 +00001552 *) New config option to avoid instructions that are illegal on the 80386.
1553 The default code is faster, but requires at least a 486.
1554 [Ulf Möller]
1555
Bodo Möller6d02d8e1999-03-31 12:06:30 +00001556 *) Got rid of old SSL2_CLIENT_VERSION (inconsistently used) and
1557 SSL2_SERVER_VERSION (not used at all) macros, which are now the
1558 same as SSL2_VERSION anyway.
1559 [Bodo Moeller]
1560
1561 *) New "-showcerts" option for s_client.
1562 [Bodo Moeller]
1563
Dr. Stephen Hensonee0508d1999-03-29 17:50:26 +00001564 *) Still more PKCS#12 integration. Add pkcs12 application to openssl
1565 application. Various cleanups and fixes.
1566 [Steve Henson]
1567
Dr. Stephen Henson8d8c7261999-03-28 23:17:34 +00001568 *) More PKCS#12 integration. Add new pkcs12 directory with Makefile.ssl and
1569 modify error routines to work internally. Add error codes and PBE init
1570 to library startup routines.
1571 [Steve Henson]
1572
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00001573 *) Further PKCS#12 integration. Added password based encryption, PKCS#8 and
1574 packing functions to asn1 and evp. Changed function names and error
1575 codes along the way.
1576 [Steve Henson]
1577
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00001578 *) PKCS12 integration: and so it begins... First of several patches to
1579 slowly integrate PKCS#12 functionality into OpenSSL. Add PKCS#12
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00001580 objects to objects.h
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00001581 [Steve Henson]
1582
Dr. Stephen Henson785cdf21999-03-27 14:06:25 +00001583 *) Add a new 'indent' option to some X509V3 extension code. Initial ASN1
1584 and display support for Thawte strong extranet extension.
1585 [Steve Henson]
1586
Ben Laurieba423ad1999-03-27 13:03:37 +00001587 *) Add LinuxPPC support.
1588 [Jeff Dubrule <igor@pobox.org>]
1589
Ben Laurie67da3df1999-03-27 12:53:21 +00001590 *) Get rid of redundant BN file bn_mulw.c, and rename bn_div64 to
1591 bn_div_words in alpha.s.
1592 [Hannes Reinecke <H.Reinecke@hw.ac.uk> and Ben Laurie]
1593
Ralf S. Engelschall0e9fc711999-03-25 07:49:33 +00001594 *) Make sure the RSA OAEP test is skipped under -DRSAref because
1595 OAEP isn't supported when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
1596 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1597
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00001598 *) Move definitions of IS_SET/IS_SEQUENCE inside crypto/asn1/asn1.h
1599 so they no longer are missing under -DNOPROTO.
1600 [Soren S. Jorvang <soren@t.dk>]
1601
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00001602
1603 Changes between 0.9.1c and 0.9.2b [22 Mar 1999]
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00001604
Ben Laurieb4cadc61999-03-22 12:22:14 +00001605 *) Make SSL_get_peer_cert_chain() work in servers. Unfortunately, it still
1606 doesn't work when the session is reused. Coming soon!
1607 [Ben Laurie]
1608
1609 *) Fix a security hole, that allows sessions to be reused in the wrong
1610 context thus bypassing client cert protection! All software that uses
1611 client certs and session caches in multiple contexts NEEDS PATCHING to
1612 allow session reuse! A fuller solution is in the works.
1613 [Ben Laurie, problem pointed out by Holger Reif, Bodo Moeller (and ???)]
1614
Ralf S. Engelschallafb23061999-03-20 13:04:12 +00001615 *) Some more source tree cleanups (removed obsolete files
1616 crypto/bf/asm/bf586.pl, test/test.txt and crypto/sha/asm/f.s; changed
1617 permission on "config" script to be executable) and a fix for the INSTALL
1618 document.
1619 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1620
Dr. Stephen Henson199d59e1999-03-14 01:16:45 +00001621 *) Remove some legacy and erroneous uses of malloc, free instead of
1622 Malloc, Free.
1623 [Lennart Bang <lob@netstream.se>, with minor changes by Steve]
1624
Ben Laurieb4899bb1999-03-12 20:41:09 +00001625 *) Make rsa_oaep_test return non-zero on error.
1626 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1627
Ben Laurie29c0fcc1999-03-12 20:26:27 +00001628 *) Add support for native Solaris shared libraries. Configure
1629 solaris-sparc-sc4-pic, make, then run shlib/solaris-sc4.sh. It'd be nice
1630 if someone would make that last step automatic.
1631 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@AdNovum.CH>]
1632
Ben Lauriecadf1261999-03-12 19:58:43 +00001633 *) ctx_size was not built with the right compiler during "make links". Fixed.
1634 [Ben Laurie]
1635
Dr. Stephen Hensonbc420ac1999-03-12 01:43:28 +00001636 *) Change the meaning of 'ALL' in the cipher list. It now means "everything
1637 except NULL ciphers". This means the default cipher list will no longer
1638 enable NULL ciphers. They need to be specifically enabled e.g. with
1639 the string "DEFAULT:eNULL".
1640 [Steve Henson]
1641
Dr. Stephen Hensonabd4c911999-03-11 02:42:13 +00001642 *) Fix to RSA private encryption routines: if p < q then it would
1643 occasionally produce an invalid result. This will only happen with
1644 externally generated keys because OpenSSL (and SSLeay) ensure p > q.
1645 [Steve Henson]
1646
Ralf S. Engelschall7e37e721999-03-10 19:57:05 +00001647 *) Be less restrictive and allow also `perl util/perlpath.pl
1648 /path/to/bin/perl' in addition to `perl util/perlpath.pl /path/to/bin',
1649 because this way one can also use an interpreter named `perl5' (which is
1650 usually the name of Perl 5.xxx on platforms where an Perl 4.x is still
1651 installed as `perl').
1652 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1653
Ralf S. Engelschall637691e1999-03-10 19:51:43 +00001654 *) Let util/clean-depend.pl work also with older Perl 5.00x versions.
1655 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
1656
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00001657 *) Fix Makefile.org so CC,CFLAG etc are passed to 'make links' add
1658 advapi32.lib to Win32 build and change the pem test comparision
1659 to fc.exe (thanks to Ulrich Kroener <kroneru@yahoo.com> for the
Dr. Stephen Henson38138021999-03-10 18:30:48 +00001660 suggestion). Fix misplaced ASNI prototypes and declarations in evp.h
1661 and crypto/des/ede_cbcm_enc.c.
1662 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00001663
Ben Laurieb241fef1999-03-09 11:37:23 +00001664 *) DES quad checksum was broken on big-endian architectures. Fixed.
1665 [Ben Laurie]
1666
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001667 *) Comment out two functions in bio.h that aren't implemented. Fix up the
1668 Win32 test batch file so it (might) work again. The Win32 test batch file
1669 is horrible: I feel ill....
1670 [Steve Henson]
1671
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00001672 *) Move various #ifdefs around so NO_SYSLOG, NO_DIRENT etc are now selected
1673 in e_os.h. Audit of header files to check ANSI and non ANSI
1674 sections: 10 functions were absent from non ANSI section and not exported
1675 from Windows DLLs. Fixed up libeay.num for new functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001676 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00001677
Ralf S. Engelschalld10f0521999-03-08 12:35:01 +00001678 *) Make `openssl version' output lines consistent.
1679 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1680
Ralf S. Engelschallc0e538e1999-03-08 11:41:26 +00001681 *) Fix Win32 symbol export lists for BIO functions: Added
1682 BIO_get_ex_new_index, BIO_get_ex_num, BIO_get_ex_data and BIO_set_ex_data
1683 to ms/libeay{16,32}.def.
1684 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1685
Ralf S. Engelschall84107e61999-03-08 11:25:49 +00001686 *) Second round of fixing the OpenSSL perl/ stuff. It now at least compiled
1687 fine under Unix and passes some trivial tests I've now added. But the
1688 whole stuff is horribly incomplete, so a README.1ST with a disclaimer was
1689 added to make sure no one expects that this stuff really works in the
1690 OpenSSL 0.9.2 release. Additionally I've started to clean the XS sources
1691 up and fixed a few little bugs and inconsistencies in OpenSSL.{pm,xs} and
1692 openssl_bio.xs.
1693 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1694
Ben Laurie26a08461999-03-07 15:08:38 +00001695 *) Fix the generation of two part addresses in perl.
1696 [Kenji Miyake <kenji@miyake.org>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
1697
Ben Laurie7d3ce7b1999-03-07 14:17:32 +00001698 *) Add config entry for Linux on MIPS.
1699 [John Tobey <jtobey@channel1.com>]
1700
Ben Laurieefadf601999-03-07 15:21:08 +00001701 *) Make links whenever Configure is run, unless we are on Windoze.
Ben Lauriecba50681999-03-07 14:05:36 +00001702 [Ben Laurie]
1703
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00001704 *) Permit extensions to be added to CRLs using crl_section in openssl.cnf.
1705 Currently only issuerAltName and AuthorityKeyIdentifier make any sense
1706 in CRLs.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00001707 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00001708
Ralf S. Engelschall116e3151999-03-06 16:07:47 +00001709 *) Add a useful kludge to allow package maintainers to specify compiler and
1710 other platforms details on the command line without having to patch the
1711 Configure script everytime: One now can use ``perl Configure
1712 <id>:<details>'', i.e. platform ids are allowed to have details appended
1713 to them (seperated by colons). This is treated as there would be a static
1714 pre-configured entry in Configure's %table under key <id> with value
1715 <details> and ``perl Configure <id>'' is called. So, when you want to
1716 perform a quick test-compile under FreeBSD 3.1 with pgcc and without
1717 assembler stuff you can use ``perl Configure "FreeBSD-elf:pgcc:-O6:::"''
1718 now, which overrides the FreeBSD-elf entry on-the-fly.
1719 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1720
Ben Lauriebc348241999-03-06 15:21:02 +00001721 *) Disable new TLS1 ciphersuites by default: they aren't official yet.
1722 [Ben Laurie]
1723
Ralf S. Engelschall3eb0ed61999-03-06 14:35:03 +00001724 *) Allow DSO flags like -fpic, -fPIC, -KPIC etc. to be specified
1725 on the `perl Configure ...' command line. This way one can compile
1726 OpenSSL libraries with Position Independent Code (PIC) which is needed
1727 for linking it into DSOs.
1728 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1729
Ben Laurief415fa31999-03-06 14:09:36 +00001730 *) Remarkably, export ciphers were totally broken and no-one had noticed!
1731 Fixed.
1732 [Ben Laurie]
1733
Ralf S. Engelschall0b903ec1999-03-06 13:29:09 +00001734 *) Cleaned up the LICENSE document: The official contact for any license
1735 questions now is the OpenSSL core team under openssl-core@openssl.org.
1736 And add a paragraph about the dual-license situation to make sure people
1737 recognize that _BOTH_ the OpenSSL license _AND_ the SSLeay license apply
1738 to the OpenSSL toolkit.
1739 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1740
Ralf S. Engelschallbb8f3c51999-03-06 12:32:06 +00001741 *) General source tree makefile cleanups: Made `making xxx in yyy...'
1742 display consistent in the source tree and replaced `/bin/rm' by `rm'.
1743 Additonally cleaned up the `make links' target: Remove unnecessary
1744 semicolons, subsequent redundant removes, inline point.sh into mklink.sh
1745 to speed processing and no longer clutter the display with confusing
1746 stuff. Instead only the actually done links are displayed.
1747 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1748
Ben Laurie988788f1999-03-06 12:09:36 +00001749 *) Permit null encryption ciphersuites, used for authentication only. It used
1750 to be necessary to set the preprocessor define SSL_ALLOW_ENULL to do this.
1751 It is now necessary to set SSL_FORBID_ENULL to prevent the use of null
1752 encryption.
1753 [Ben Laurie]
1754
Dr. Stephen Henson924acc51999-03-05 02:05:15 +00001755 *) Add a bunch of fixes to the PKCS#7 stuff. It used to sometimes reorder
1756 signed attributes when verifying signatures (this would break them),
1757 the detached data encoding was wrong and public keys obtained using
1758 X509_get_pubkey() weren't freed.
1759 [Steve Henson]
1760
Dr. Stephen Hensond00b7aa1999-03-05 01:07:04 +00001761 *) Add text documentation for the BUFFER functions. Also added a work around
1762 to a Win95 console bug. This was triggered by the password read stuff: the
1763 last character typed gets carried over to the next fread(). If you were
1764 generating a new cert request using 'req' for example then the last
1765 character of the passphrase would be CR which would then enter the first
1766 field as blank.
Dr. Stephen Henson9985bed1999-03-04 23:29:51 +00001767 [Steve Henson]
1768
Ralf S. Engelschall789285a1999-03-04 12:55:42 +00001769 *) Added the new `Includes OpenSSL Cryptography Software' button as
1770 doc/openssl_button.{gif,html} which is similar in style to the old SSLeay
1771 button and can be used by applications based on OpenSSL to show the
1772 relationship to the OpenSSL project.
1773 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1774
Ralf S. Engelschalla06c6021999-03-04 07:54:01 +00001775 *) Remove confusing variables in function signatures in files
1776 ssl/ssl_lib.c and ssl/ssl.h.
1777 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
1778
Ralf S. Engelschall8d697db1999-03-04 07:47:27 +00001779 *) Don't install bss_file.c under PREFIX/include/
1780 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
1781
Dr. Stephen Henson06c68491999-03-03 02:01:26 +00001782 *) Get the Win32 compile working again. Modify mkdef.pl so it can handle
1783 functions that return function pointers and has support for NT specific
1784 stuff. Fix mk1mf.pl and VC-32.pl to support NT differences also. Various
1785 #ifdef WIN32 and WINNTs sprinkled about the place and some changes from
1786 unsigned to signed types: this was killing the Win32 compile.
1787 [Steve Henson]
1788
Ralf S. Engelschall72e442a1999-03-22 15:50:34 +00001789 *) Add new certificate file to stack functions,
1790 SSL_add_dir_cert_subjects_to_stack() and
1791 SSL_add_file_cert_subjects_to_stack(). These largely supplant
1792 SSL_load_client_CA_file(), and can be used to add multiple certs easily
1793 to a stack (usually this is then handed to SSL_CTX_set_client_CA_list()).
Ben Laurieeb90a481999-02-28 17:41:55 +00001794 This means that Apache-SSL and similar packages don't have to mess around
1795 to add as many CAs as they want to the preferred list.
1796 [Ben Laurie]
1797
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00001798 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
1799 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
1800 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
1801 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
1802 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +00001803
1804 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
1805 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00001806
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +00001807 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
1808 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
1809 [Steve Henson]
1810
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +00001811 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
1812 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
1813 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
1814 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
1815 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
1816 (e.g. s_server).
1817 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
1818 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
1819 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
1820 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
1821 no way to reconfigure them.
1822 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
1823 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
1824 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
1825 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
1826 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
1827 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1828
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +00001829 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
1830 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
1831 recognized by the users.
1832 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1833
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +00001834 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
1835 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
1836 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
1837 already masked variable.
1838 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1839
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +00001840 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
1841 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1842
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +00001843 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
1844 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
1845 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
1846 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1847
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +00001848 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
1849 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
1850 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1851
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +00001852 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
1853 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
1854 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
1855 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
1856 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
1857 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
1858 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
1859 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
1860 now, too.
1861 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1862
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +00001863 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
1864 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
1865 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
1866
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +00001867 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
1868 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
1869 config file.
1870 [Steve Henson]
1871
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +00001872 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
1873 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
1874
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +00001875 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
1876 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
1877 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
1878 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
1879 [Ben Laurie]
1880
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +00001881 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
1882 [Steve Henson]
1883
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +00001884 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
1885 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
1886
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +00001887 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
1888 [Ben Laurie]
1889
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +00001890 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
1891 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
1892 [Steve Henson]
1893
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00001894 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
1895 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
1896 [Steve Henson]
1897
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +00001898 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
1899 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
1900 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
1901 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
1902 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
1903 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
1904 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
1905 Ben Laurie]
1906
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +00001907 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
1908 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1909
1910 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
1911 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
1912 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
1913 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
1914 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
1915
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001916 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
1917 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00001918 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001919 [Steve Henson]
1920
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00001921 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
1922 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for
1923 an example.
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00001924 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00001925
Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +00001926 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
1927 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
1928 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
1929
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +00001930 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
1931 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
1932 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
1933 build instructions.
1934 [Steve Henson]
1935
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +00001936 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
1937 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
1938 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
1939 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
1940 [Steve Henson]
1941
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +00001942 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
1943 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
1944 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
1945 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
1946 [Ben Laurie]
1947
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00001948 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
1949 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
1950 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
1951 so it wasn't spotted.
1952 [Steve Henson, reported by Erwann ABALEA <eabalea@certplus.com>]
1953
Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +00001954 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
1955 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
1956 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
1957 vectors if you have them.
1958 [Ben Laurie]
1959
Ralf S. Engelschall2c6ccde1999-03-06 14:01:29 +00001960 *) Correct calculation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +00001961 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
1962 [Ben Laurie]
1963
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00001964 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
1965 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
1966 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
1967 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
1968 If you do a:
1969 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
1970 it will update them.
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00001971 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00001972
Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +00001973 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
1974 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
1975 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
1976 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
1977 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
1978 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
1979 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
1980 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1981
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +00001982 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
1983 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
1984 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
1985 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
1986 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
1987 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
1988 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
1989 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
1990 the crypto/md/ stuff).
1991 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1992
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +00001993 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
1994 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
1995 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
1996 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
1997 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
1998 [Steve Henson]
1999
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +00002000 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the
2001 INTEGER code.
2002 [Steve Henson]
2003
Mark J. Cox351d8991999-01-31 12:14:39 +00002004 *) Add new function, EVP_MD_CTX_copy() to replace frequent use of memcpy.
2005 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
2006
Ralf S. Engelschallb621d771999-01-31 11:10:10 +00002007 *) Make sure `make rehash' target really finds the `openssl' program.
2008 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2009
Ben Lauriea96e7811999-01-30 17:53:00 +00002010 *) Squeeze another 7% of speed out of MD5 assembler, at least on a P2. I'd
2011 like to hear about it if this slows down other processors.
2012 [Ben Laurie]
2013
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +00002014 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.
2015 [Alan Batie <batie@aahz.jf.intel.com>]
2016
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00002017 *) Fixed ms/32all.bat script: `no_asm' -> `no-asm'
2018 [Rainer W. Gerling <gerling@mpg-gv.mpg.de>]
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00002019
2020 *) New program nseq to manipulate netscape certificate sequences
2021 [Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +00002022
Dr. Stephen Henson9fe84291999-01-29 01:53:55 +00002023 *) Modify crl2pkcs7 so it supports multiple -certfile arguments. Fix a
2024 few typos.
2025 [Steve Henson]
2026
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +00002027 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION
2028 but the BN code had some problems that would cause failures when
2029 doing certificate verification and some other functions.
2030 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
2031
Dr. Stephen Henson92c046c1999-01-28 00:16:44 +00002032 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
2033 [Steve Henson]
2034
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00002035 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
2036 [Steve Henson]
2037
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +00002038 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
2039 [Steve Henson]
2040
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +00002041 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
2042 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
2043 [Steve Henson]
2044
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00002045 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
2046 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
2047 CA extensions.
2048 [Steve Henson]
2049
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00002050 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the
2051 error code, add initial support to X509_print() and x509 application.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00002052 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00002053
Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +00002054 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
2055 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
2056 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
2057 [Steve Henson]
2058
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00002059 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
2060 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
2061 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
2062 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
2063 properly to be processed.
2064 [Steve Henson]
2065
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +00002066 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
2067 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
2068 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
2069 [Ben Laurie]
2070
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +00002071 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.
2072 [Ben Laurie, reported by Jeremy Hylton <jeremy@cnri.reston.va.us>]
2073
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00002074 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
2075 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
2076 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
2077 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
2078 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
2079 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
2080 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
2081 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
2082 or delete all the .err files.
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00002083 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00002084
Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +00002085 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
2086 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
2087 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
2088 to regenerate it if needed.
2089 [Ben Laurie, reported (with fix for C version) by Jun-ichiro itojun
2090 Hagino <itojun@kame.net>]
2091
2092 *) File was opened incorrectly in randfile.c.
2093 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2094
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +00002095 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
2096 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
2097 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
2098 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
2099 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
2100 [Steve Henson]
2101
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +00002102 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.
2103 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2104
Ben Laurie512d2221999-01-17 14:14:41 +00002105 *) Remove pointless MD5 hash when using DSA keys in ca.
2106 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2107
Ben Laurie2c1ef381999-01-17 14:10:08 +00002108 *) Generate an error if given an empty string as a cert directory. Also
2109 generate an error if handed NULL (previously returned 0 to indicate an
2110 error, but didn't set one).
2111 [Ben Laurie, reported by Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2112
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +00002113 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
2114 [Ben Laurie]
2115
Dr. Stephen Hensonee13f9b1999-01-14 18:25:07 +00002116 *) Fix the dummy function BN_ref_mod_exp() in rsaref.c to have the correct
2117 parameters. This was causing a warning which killed off the Win32 compile.
2118 [Steve Henson]
2119
Dr. Stephen Henson27eb6221999-01-14 18:21:57 +00002120 *) Remove C++ style comments from crypto/bn/bn_local.h.
2121 [Neil Costigan <neil.costigan@celocom.com>]
2122
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +00002123 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
2124 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
2125 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
2126 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
2127 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
2128 OID is not part of the table.
2129 [Steve Henson]
2130
Ben Lauriea6801a91999-01-10 20:36:02 +00002131 *) Add prototypes to X509 lookup/verify methods, fixing a bug in
2132 X509_LOOKUP_by_alias().
2133 [Ben Laurie]
2134
Ben Laurie50acf461999-01-09 19:15:59 +00002135 *) Sort openssl functions by name.
2136 [Ben Laurie]
2137
Dr. Stephen Henson7f9b7b01999-01-09 17:29:34 +00002138 *) Get the gendsa program working (hopefully) and add it to app list. Remove
2139 encryption from sample DSA keys (in case anyone is interested the password
2140 was "1234").
2141 [Steve Henson]
2142
Ben Lauriee03ddfa1999-01-07 19:15:59 +00002143 *) Make _all_ *_free functions accept a NULL pointer.
2144 [Frans Heymans <fheymans@isaserver.be>]
2145
Ben Laurie6fa89f91999-01-07 00:37:01 +00002146 *) If a DH key is generated in s3_srvr.c, don't blow it by trying to use
2147 NULL pointers.
2148 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2149
Ben Lauriec13d4791999-01-07 00:16:37 +00002150 *) s_server should send the CAfile as acceptable CAs, not its own cert.
2151 [Bodo Moeller <3moeller@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
2152
Ben Lauriebc4deee1999-01-07 00:10:32 +00002153 *) Don't blow it for numeric -newkey arguments to apps/req.
2154 [Bodo Moeller <3moeller@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
2155
Ben Laurie5b001151999-01-06 23:18:08 +00002156 *) Temp key "for export" tests were wrong in s3_srvr.c.
2157 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2158
Ben Laurief8c3c051999-01-06 22:53:34 +00002159 *) Add prototype for temp key callback functions
2160 SSL_CTX_set_tmp_{rsa,dh}_callback().
2161 [Ben Laurie]
2162
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00002163 *) Make DH_free() tolerate being passed a NULL pointer (like RSA_free() and
2164 DSA_free()). Make X509_PUBKEY_set() check for errors in d2i_PublicKey().
Dr. Stephen Henson384c4791999-01-06 01:41:21 +00002165 [Steve Henson]

Ben Lauriee416ad91999-01-04 21:43:32 +00002167 *) X509_name_add_entry() freed the wrong thing after an error.
2168 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
2169
Ben Laurie4a18cdd1999-01-04 21:39:34 +00002170 *) rsa_eay.c would attempt to free a NULL context.

2172
Ben Lauriebb65e201999-01-04 20:11:31 +00002173 *) BIO_s_socket() had a broken should_retry() on Windoze.

2175
Ben Laurieb5e406f1999-01-04 19:55:12 +00002176 *) BIO_f_buffer() didn't pass on BIO_CTRL_FLUSH.
2177 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
2178
Ralf S. Engelschallcb0f35d1999-01-03 15:31:11 +00002179 *) Make sure the already existing X509_STORE->depth variable is initialized
2180 in X509_STORE_new(), but document the fact that this variable is still
2181 unused in the certificate verification process.
2182 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2183
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcf6451999-01-03 01:08:33 +00002184 *) Fix the various library and apps files to free up pkeys obtained from
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00002185 X509_PUBKEY_get() et al. Also allow x509.c to handle netscape extensions.
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcf6451999-01-03 01:08:33 +00002186 [Steve Henson]
2187
Ben Lauriecdbb8c21999-01-02 19:04:27 +00002188 *) Fix reference counting in X509_PUBKEY_get(). This makes
2189 demos/maurice/example2.c work, amongst others, probably.
2190 [Steve Henson and Ben Laurie]
2191
Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00002192 *) First cut of a cleanup for apps/. First the `ssleay' program is now named
2193 `openssl' and second, the shortcut symlinks for the `openssl <command>'
2194 are no longer created. This way we have a single and consistent command
2195 line interface `openssl <command>', similar to `cvs <command>'.
Ben Lauriecdbb8c21999-01-02 19:04:27 +00002196 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Paul Sutton and Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00002197
Dr. Stephen Hensonc35f5491999-01-02 01:53:06 +00002198 *) ca.c: move test for DSA keys inside #ifndef NO_DSA. Make pubkey
2199 BIT STRING wrapper always have zero unused bits.
2200 [Steve Henson]
2201
Dr. Stephen Hensonebc828c1999-01-01 18:43:44 +00002202 *) Add CA.pl, perl version of CA.sh, add extended key usage OID.
2203 [Steve Henson]
2204
Paul C. Sutton79e259e1999-01-01 14:04:07 +00002205 *) Make the top-level INSTALL documentation easier to understand.
2206 [Paul Sutton]
2207
Paul C. Sutton56ee3111999-01-01 12:51:11 +00002208 *) Makefiles updated to exit if an error occurs in a sub-directory
2209 make (including if user presses ^C) [Paul Sutton]
2210
Ben Laurie6063b271998-12-31 17:11:46 +00002211 *) Make Montgomery context stuff explicit in RSA data structure.

2213
2214 *) Fix build order of pem and err to allow for generated pem.h.
2215 [Ben Laurie]
2216
2217 *) Fix renumbering bug in X509_NAME_delete_entry().
2218 [Ben Laurie]
2219
stephen792a9001998-12-31 01:35:07 +00002220 *) Enhanced the err-ins.pl script so it makes the error library number
2221 global and can add a library name. This is needed for external ASN1 and
2222 other error libraries.
2223 [Steve Henson]
2224
2225 *) Fixed sk_insert which never worked properly.
2226 [Steve Henson]
2227
2228 *) Fix ASN1 macros so they can handle indefinite length construted
2229 EXPLICIT tags. Some non standard certificates use these: they can now
2230 be read in.
2231 [Steve Henson]
2232
Ralf S. Engelschallce72df11998-12-30 23:07:32 +00002233 *) Merged the various old/obsolete SSLeay documentation files (doc/xxx.doc)
2234 into a single doc/ssleay.txt bundle. This way the information is still
2235 preserved but no longer messes up this directory. Now it's new room for
2236 the new set of documenation files.
2237 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2238
Ben Laurie4098e891998-12-29 21:43:55 +00002239 *) SETs were incorrectly DER encoded. This was a major pain, because they
2240 shared code with SEQUENCEs, which aren't coded the same. This means that
2241 almost everything to do with SETs or SEQUENCEs has either changed name or
2242 number of arguments.
2243 [Ben Laurie, based on a partial fix by GP Jayan <gp@nsj.co.jp>]
2244
2245 *) Fix test data to work with the above.
2246 [Ben Laurie]
2247
Ben Laurie03f8b041998-12-29 17:22:31 +00002248 *) Fix the RSA header declarations that hid a bug I fixed in 0.9.0b but
2249 was already fixed by Eric for 0.9.1 it seems.
Ralf S. Engelschall88fce971998-12-30 23:09:13 +00002250 [Ben Laurie - pointed out by Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]

Ben Laurie5dcdcd41998-12-28 17:14:28 +00002252 *) Autodetect FreeBSD3.
2253 [Ben Laurie]
2254
Ben Laurie1641cb61998-12-28 17:08:48 +00002255 *) Fix various bugs in Configure. This affects the following platforms:
2256 nextstep
2257 ncr-scde
2258 unixware-2.0
2259 unixware-2.0-pentium
2260 sco5-cc.

Ben Laurie8d7ed6f1998-12-28 21:58:19 +00002263 *) Eliminate generated files from CVS. Reorder tests to regenerate files
2264 before they are needed.
2265 [Ben Laurie]
2266
2267 *) Generate Makefile.ssl from Makefile.org (to keep CVS happy).
2268 [Ben Laurie]
2269
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00002270

Ralf S. Engelschall651d0af1998-12-22 15:04:48 +00002279
Ralf S. Engelschall13e91dd1998-12-22 15:59:57 +00002280 *) Fixed the nasty bug where rsaref.h was not found under compile-time
2281 because the symlink to include/ was missing.
2282 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2283
2284 *) Incorporated the popular no-RSA/DSA-only patches
2285 which allow to compile a RSA-free SSLeay.
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +00002286 [Andrew Cooke / Interrader Ldt., Ralf S. Engelschall]
Ralf S. Engelschall13e91dd1998-12-22 15:59:57 +00002287
2288 *) Fixed nasty rehash problem under `make -f Makefile.ssl links'
2289 when "ssleay" is still not found.
2290 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2291
2292 *) Added more platforms to Configure: Cray T3E, HPUX 11,
2293 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Beckmann <beckman@acl.lanl.gov>]
2294
Ralf S. Engelschall651d0af1998-12-22 15:04:48 +00002295 *) Updated the README file.
2296 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2297
2298 *) Added various .cvsignore files in the CVS repository subdirs
2299 to make a "cvs update" really silent.
2300 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2301
2302 *) Recompiled the error-definition header files and added
2303 missing symbols to the Win32 linker tables.
2304 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2305
2306 *) Cleaned up the top-level documents;
2307 o new files: CHANGES and LICENSE
2308 o merged VERSION, HISTORY* and README* files a CHANGES.SSLeay
2309 o merged COPYRIGHT into LICENSE
2310 o removed obsolete TODO file
2311 o renamed MICROSOFT to INSTALL.W32
2312 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
