4
Richard Levittec90341a2000-04-01 11:24:27 +00005 Changes between 0.9.5a and 0.9.6 [xx XXX 2000]
6
Richard Levittefb0b8442000-06-22 09:19:59 +00007 *) Addition of the command line parameter '-rand file' to 'openssl req'.
8 The given file takes precedence over the RANDFILE option in the
9 configuration file.
10 [Richard Levitte]
11
Dr. Stephen Henson4dd45352000-06-22 00:34:27 +000012 *) mkstack.pl now sorts each macro group into lexical order.
13 Previously the output order depended on the order the files
14 appeared in the directory, resulting in needless rewriting
15 of safestack.h .
16 [Steve Henson]
17
Dr. Stephen Henson13083212000-06-21 02:25:30 +000018 *) Patches to make OpenSSL compile under Win32 again. Mostly
19 work arounds for the VC++ problem that it treats func() as
20 func(void). Also stripped out the parts of mkdef.pl that
21 added extra typesafe functions: these no longer exist.
22 [Steve Henson]
23
Dr. Stephen Henson3aceb942000-06-16 23:29:26 +000024 *) Reorganisation of the stack code. The macros are now all
25 collected in safestack.h . Each macro is defined in terms of
26 a "stack macro" of the form SKM_<name>(type, a, b). The
27 DEBUG_SAFESTACK is now handled in terms of function casts,
28 this has the advantage of retaining type safety without the
29 use of additional functions. If DEBUG_SAFESTACK is not defined
30 then the non typesafe macros are used instead. Also modified the
31 mkstack.pl script to handle the new form. Needs testing to see
32 if which (if any) compilers it chokes and maybe make DEBUG_SAFESTACK
Dr. Stephen Henson7ef82062000-06-20 18:45:28 +000033 the default if no major problems. Similar behaviour for ASN1_SET_OF
34 and PKCS12_STACK_OF.
Dr. Stephen Henson3aceb942000-06-16 23:29:26 +000035 [Steve Henson]
36
Dr. Stephen Hensond3ed8ce2000-06-15 23:48:05 +000037 *) When some versions of IIS use the 'NET' form of private key the
38 key derivation algorithm is different. Normally MD5(password) is
39 used as a 128 bit RC4 key. In the modified case
40 MD5(MD5(password) + "SGCKEYSALT") is used insted. Added some
41 new functions i2d_RSA_NET(), d2i_RSA_NET() etc which are the same
42 as the old Netscape_RSA functions except they have an additional
43 'sgckey' parameter which uses the modified algorithm. Also added
44 an -sgckey command line option to the rsa utility. Thanks to
45 Adrian Peck <bertie@ncipher.com> for posting details of the modified
46 algorithm to openssl-dev.
47 [Steve Henson]
48
Dr. Stephen Hensone366f2b2000-06-11 15:43:17 +000049 *) The evp_local.h macros were using 'c.##kname' which resulted in
50 invalid expansion on some systems (SCO 5.0.5 for example).
51 Corrected to 'c.kname'.
52 [Phillip Porch <root@theporch.com>]
53
Dr. Stephen Hensona91dedc2000-06-11 12:18:15 +000054 *) New X509_get1_email() and X509_REQ_get1_email() functions that return
55 a STACK of email addresses from a certificate or request, these look
56 in the subject name and the subject alternative name extensions and
57 omit any duplicate addresses.
58 [Steve Henson]
59
Bodo Möllerdc434bb2000-06-08 20:26:03 +000060 *) Re-implement BN_mod_exp2_mont using independent (and larger) windows.
61 This makes DSA verification about 2 % faster.
62 [Bodo Moeller]
63
64 *) Increase maximum window size in BN_mod_exp_... to 6 bits instead of 5
65 (meaning that now 2^5 values will be precomputed, which is only 4 KB
66 plus overhead for 1024 bit moduli).
67 This makes exponentiations about 0.5 % faster for 1024 bit
68 exponents (as measured by "openssl speed rsa2048").
69 [Bodo Moeller]
70
Bodo Möller947b3b82000-06-08 15:01:14 +000071 *) Rename memory handling macros to avoid conflicts with other
72 software:
73 Malloc => OPENSSL_malloc
74 Malloc_locked => OPENSSL_malloc_locked
75 Realloc => OPENSSL_realloc
76 Free => OPENSSL_free
77 [Richard Levitte]
78
Bodo Möller482a9d42000-06-10 12:05:52 +000079 *) New function BN_mod_exp_mont_word for small bases (roughly 15%
80 faster than BN_mod_exp_mont, i.e. 7% for a full DH exchange).
Bodo Möller6dad7bd2000-06-07 21:29:25 +000081 [Bodo Moeller]
82
Ulf Möllerbe5d92e2000-06-03 23:23:10 +000083 *) CygWin32 support.
84 [John Jarvie <jjarvie@newsguy.com>]
85
Geoff Thorpee41c8d62000-06-01 05:13:52 +000086 *) The type-safe stack code has been rejigged. It is now only compiled
87 in when OpenSSL is configured with the DEBUG_SAFESTACK option and
88 by default all type-specific stack functions are "#define"d back to
89 standard stack functions. This results in more streamlined output
90 but retains the type-safety checking possibilities of the original
91 approach.
92 [Geoff Thorpe]
93
Geoff Thorpeccd86b62000-06-01 02:36:58 +000094 *) The STACK code has been cleaned up, and certain type declarations
95 that didn't make a lot of sense have been brought in line. This has
96 also involved a cleanup of sorts in safestack.h to more correctly
97 map type-safe stack functions onto their plain stack counterparts.
98 This work has also resulted in a variety of "const"ifications of
99 lots of the code, especially "_cmp" operations which should normally
100 be prototyped with "const" parameters anyway.
101 [Geoff Thorpe]
102
Bodo Möller361ee972000-05-30 21:44:36 +0000103 *) When generating bytes for the first time in md_rand.c, 'stir the pool'
104 by seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes (with zero entropy count).
105 (The PRNG state consists of two parts, the large pool 'state' and 'md',
106 where all of 'md' is used each time the PRNG is used, but 'state'
107 is used only indexed by a cyclic counter. As entropy may not be
108 well distributed from the beginning, 'md' is important as a
109 chaining variable. However, the output function chains only half
110 of 'md', i.e. 80 bits. ssleay_rand_add, on the other hand, chains
111 all of 'md', and seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes will result
112 in all of 'state' being rewritten, with the new values depending
113 on virtually all of 'md'. This overcomes the 80 bit limitation.)
114 [Bodo Moeller]
115
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000116 *) In ssl/s2_clnt.c and ssl/s3_clnt.c, call ERR_clear_error() when
117 the handshake is continued after ssl_verify_cert_chain();
118 otherwise, if SSL_VERIFY_NONE is set, remaining error codes
119 can lead to 'unexplainable' connection aborts later.
120 [Bodo Moeller; problem tracked down by Lutz Jaenicke]
121
122 *) Major EVP API cipher revision.
123 Add hooks for extra EVP features. This allows various cipher
124 parameters to be set in the EVP interface. Support added for variable
125 key length ciphers via the EVP_CIPHER_CTX_set_key_length() function and
126 setting of RC2 and RC5 parameters.
127
128 Modify EVP_OpenInit() and EVP_SealInit() to cope with variable key length
129 ciphers.
130
131 Remove lots of duplicated code from the EVP library. For example *every*
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000132 cipher init() function handles the 'iv' in the same way according to the
133 cipher mode. They also all do nothing if the 'key' parameter is NULL and
134 for CFB and OFB modes they zero ctx->num.
135
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000136 New functionality allows removal of S/MIME code RC2 hack.
137
Dr. Stephen Henson57ae2e22000-05-30 02:10:57 +0000138 Most of the routines have the same form and so can be declared in terms
139 of macros.
140
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000141 By shifting this to the top level EVP_CipherInit() it can be removed from
142 all individual ciphers. If the cipher wants to handle IVs or keys
143 differently it can set the EVP_CIPH_CUSTOM_IV or EVP_CIPH_ALWAYS_CALL_INIT
144 flags.
Dr. Stephen Hensonbe06a932000-05-27 12:38:43 +0000145
146 Change lots of functions like EVP_EncryptUpdate() to now return a
147 value: although software versions of the algorithms cannot fail
148 any installed hardware versions can.
Dr. Stephen Henson7f060602000-05-26 23:51:35 +0000149 [Steve Henson]
150
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000151 *) Implement SSL_OP_TLS_ROLLBACK_BUG: In ssl3_get_client_key_exchange, if
152 this option is set, tolerate broken clients that send the negotiated
153 protocol version number instead of the requested protocol version
154 number.
155 [Bodo Moeller]
156
157 *) Call dh_tmp_cb (set by ..._TMP_DH_CB) with correct 'is_export' flag;
158 i.e. non-zero for export ciphersuites, zero otherwise.
159 Previous versions had this flag inverted, inconsistent with
160 rsa_tmp_cb (..._TMP_RSA_CB).
161 [Bodo Moeller; problem reported by Amit Chopra]
162
Dr. Stephen Hensonb4b41f42000-05-24 13:09:59 +0000163 *) Add missing DSA library text string. Work around for some IIS
164 key files with invalid SEQUENCE encoding.
165 [Steve Henson]
166
Richard Levitte6d7cce42000-05-18 21:25:48 +0000167 *) Add a document (doc/standards.txt) that list all kinds of standards
168 and so on that are implemented in OpenSSL.
169 [Richard Levitte]
170
Dr. Stephen Henson439df502000-05-18 00:33:00 +0000171 *) Enhance c_rehash script. Old version would mishandle certificates
172 with the same subject name hash and wouldn't handle CRLs at all.
173 Added -fingerprint option to crl utility, to support new c_rehash
174 features.
175 [Steve Henson]
176
Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000177 *) Eliminate non-ANSI declarations in crypto.h and stack.h.
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000178 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000179
Dr. Stephen Henson0cb957a2000-05-04 23:03:49 +0000180 *) Fix for SSL server purpose checking. Server checking was
181 rejecting certificates which had extended key usage present
182 but no ssl client purpose.
183 [Steve Henson, reported by Rene Grosser <grosser@hisolutions.com>]
184
Dr. Stephen Hensona331a302000-05-04 00:08:35 +0000185 *) Make PKCS#12 code work with no password. The PKCS#12 spec
186 is a little unclear about how a blank password is handled.
187 Since the password in encoded as a BMPString with terminating
188 double NULL a zero length password would end up as just the
189 double NULL. However no password at all is different and is
190 handled differently in the PKCS#12 key generation code. NS
191 treats a blank password as zero length. MSIE treats it as no
192 password on export: but it will try both on import. We now do
193 the same: PKCS12_parse() tries zero length and no password if
194 the password is set to "" or NULL (NULL is now a valid password:
195 it wasn't before) as does the pkcs12 application.
196 [Steve Henson]
197
Bodo Möller316e6a62000-05-02 20:29:03 +0000198 *) Bugfixes in apps/x509.c: Avoid a memory leak; and don't use
199 perror when PEM_read_bio_X509_REQ fails, the error message must
200 be obtained from the error queue.
201 [Bodo Moeller]
202
Bodo Möllerdcba2532000-04-29 23:58:05 +0000203 *) Avoid 'thread_hash' memory leak in crypto/err/err.c by freeing
204 it in ERR_remove_state if appropriate, and change ERR_get_state
205 accordingly to avoid race conditions (this is necessary because
206 thread_hash is no longer constant once set).
207 [Bodo Moeller]
208
Ulf Möller39736282000-04-27 15:06:26 +0000209 *) Bugfix for linux-elf makefile.one.
210 [Ulf Möller]
211
Geoff Thorpedeb4d502000-04-20 06:44:18 +0000212 *) RSA_get_default_method() will now cause a default
213 RSA_METHOD to be chosen if one doesn't exist already.
214 Previously this was only set during a call to RSA_new()
215 or RSA_new_method(NULL) meaning it was possible for
216 RSA_get_default_method() to return NULL.
217 [Geoff Thorpe]
218
Geoff Thorpeb9e63912000-04-19 21:45:17 +0000219 *) Added native name translation to the existing DSO code
220 that will convert (if the flag to do so is set) filenames
221 that are sufficiently small and have no path information
222 into a canonical native form. Eg. "blah" converted to
223 "libblah.so" or "blah.dll" etc.
224 [Geoff Thorpe]
225
Bodo Möllere5c84d52000-04-14 23:36:15 +0000226 *) New function ERR_error_string_n(e, buf, len) which is like
227 ERR_error_string(e, buf), but writes at most 'len' bytes
228 including the 0 terminator. For ERR_error_string_n, 'buf'
229 may not be NULL.
230 [Damien Miller <djm@mindrot.org>, Bodo Moeller]
231
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000232 *) CONF library reworked to become more general. A new CONF
233 configuration file reader "class" is implemented as well as a
234 new functions (NCONF_*, for "New CONF") to handle it. The now
235 old CONF_* functions are still there, but are reimplemented to
236 work in terms of the new functions. Also, a set of functions
237 to handle the internal storage of the configuration data is
238 provided to make it easier to write new configuration file
239 reader "classes" (I can definitely see something reading a
240 configuration file in XML format, for example), called _CONF_*,
241 or "the configuration storage API"...
242
243 The new configuration file reading functions are:
244
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000245 NCONF_new, NCONF_free, NCONF_load, NCONF_load_fp, NCONF_load_bio,
246 NCONF_get_section, NCONF_get_string, NCONF_get_numbre
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000247
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000248 NCONF_default, NCONF_WIN32
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000249
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000250 NCONF_dump_fp, NCONF_dump_bio
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000251
252 NCONF_default and NCONF_WIN32 are method (or "class") choosers,
253 NCONF_new creates a new CONF object. This works in the same way
254 as other interfaces in OpenSSL, like the BIO interface.
255 NCONF_dump_* dump the internal storage of the configuration file,
256 which is useful for debugging. All other functions take the same
257 arguments as the old CONF_* functions wth the exception of the
258 first that must be a `CONF *' instead of a `LHASH *'.
259
260 To make it easer to use the new classes with the old CONF_* functions,
261 the function CONF_set_default_method is provided.
262 [Richard Levitte]
263
Bodo Möller1d90f282000-04-06 22:33:14 +0000264 *) Add '-tls1' option to 'openssl ciphers', which was already
265 mentioned in the documentation but had not been implemented.
266 (This option is not yet really useful because even the additional
267 experimental TLS 1.0 ciphers are currently treated as SSL 3.0 ciphers.)
268 [Bodo Moeller]
269
Geoff Thorpe6ef4d9d2000-04-04 22:49:27 +0000270 *) Initial DSO code added into libcrypto for letting OpenSSL (and
271 OpenSSL-based applications) load shared libraries and bind to
272 them in a portable way.
273 [Geoff Thorpe, with contributions from Richard Levitte]
Richard Levittec90341a2000-04-01 11:24:27 +0000274
Richard Levitte5e615802000-04-01 11:15:15 +0000275 Changes between 0.9.5 and 0.9.5a [1 Apr 2000]
276
277 *) Make sure _lrotl and _lrotr are only used with MSVC.
Bodo Möller865874f2000-02-28 18:03:16 +0000278
Bodo Möllercf194c12000-03-30 08:12:35 +0000279 *) Use lock CRYPTO_LOCK_RAND correctly in ssleay_rand_status
280 (the default implementation of RAND_status).
281
Bodo Möller3bc90f22000-03-27 18:10:08 +0000282 *) Rename openssl x509 option '-crlext', which was added in 0.9.5,
283 to '-clrext' (= clear extensions), as intended and documented.
284 [Bodo Moeller; inconsistency pointed out by Michael Attili
285 <attili@amaxo.com>]
286
Dr. Stephen Hensonb475baf2000-03-27 00:53:27 +0000287 *) Fix for HMAC. It wasn't zeroing the rest of the block if the key length
288 was larger than the MD block size.
289 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Yost William <YostW@tce.com>]
290
Dr. Stephen Hensone77066e2000-03-22 13:50:23 +0000291 *) Modernise PKCS12_parse() so it uses STACK_OF(X509) for its ca argument
292 fix a leak when the ca argument was passed as NULL. Stop X509_PUBKEY_set()
293 using the passed key: if the passed key was a private key the result
294 of X509_print(), for example, would be to print out all the private key
295 components.
296 [Steve Henson]
297
Ulf Möller7af48162000-03-19 02:06:37 +0000298 *) des_quad_cksum() byte order bug fix.
299 [Ulf Möller, using the problem description in krb4-0.9.7, where
300 the solution is attributed to Derrick J Brashear <shadow@DEMENTIA.ORG>]
301
Dr. Stephen Henson80870562000-03-14 03:29:57 +0000302 *) Fix so V_ASN1_APP_CHOOSE works again: however its use is strongly
303 discouraged.
304 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Brian Korver <briank@cs.stanford.edu>]
305
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000306 *) For easily testing in shell scripts whether some command
307 'openssl XXX' exists, the new pseudo-command 'openssl no-XXX'
Bodo Möllerdf1ff3f2000-03-13 21:01:05 +0000308 returns with exit code 0 iff no command of the given name is available.
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000309 'no-XXX' is printed in this case, 'XXX' otherwise. In both cases,
Bodo Möller46c46472000-03-13 20:31:46 +0000310 the output goes to stdout and nothing is printed to stderr.
311 Additional arguments are always ignored.
312
313 Since for each cipher there is a command of the same name,
314 the 'no-cipher' compilation switches can be tested this way.
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000315
316 ('openssl no-XXX' is not able to detect pseudo-commands such
317 as 'quit', 'list-XXX-commands', or 'no-XXX' itself.)
Bodo Möller46c46472000-03-13 20:31:46 +0000318 [Bodo Moeller]
319
Bodo Möller65b002f2000-03-13 19:24:39 +0000320 *) Update test suite so that 'make test' succeeds in 'no-rsa' configuration.
321 [Bodo Moeller]
322
Bodo Möllere11f0de2000-03-13 17:07:04 +0000323 *) For SSL_[CTX_]set_tmp_dh, don't create a DH key if SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE
324 is set; it will be thrown away anyway because each handshake creates
325 its own key.
326 ssl_cert_dup, which is used by SSL_new, now copies DH keys in addition
327 to parameters -- in previous versions (since OpenSSL 0.9.3) the
328 'default key' from SSL_CTX_set_tmp_dh would always be lost, meanining
329 you effectivly got SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE when using this macro.
330 [Bodo Moeller]
331
Bodo Möller2d5e4492000-03-10 13:49:02 +0000332 *) New s_client option -ign_eof: EOF at stdin is ignored, and
333 'Q' and 'R' lose their special meanings (quit/renegotiate).
334 This is part of what -quiet does; unlike -quiet, -ign_eof
335 does not suppress any output.
336 [Richard Levitte]
337
Bodo Möllerdaf4e532000-03-07 15:10:08 +0000338 *) Add compatibility options to the purpose and trust code. The
Dr. Stephen Henson068fdce2000-03-07 14:04:29 +0000339 purpose X509_PURPOSE_ANY is "any purpose" which automatically
340 accepts a certificate or CA, this was the previous behaviour,
341 with all the associated security issues.
342
343 X509_TRUST_COMPAT is the old trust behaviour: only and
344 automatically trust self signed roots in certificate store. A
345 new trust setting X509_TRUST_DEFAULT is used to specify that
346 a purpose has no associated trust setting and it should instead
347 use the value in the default purpose.
348 [Steve Henson]
349
Dr. Stephen Henson48fe0ee2000-03-07 01:03:33 +0000350 *) Fix the PKCS#8 DSA private key code so it decodes keys again
351 and fix a memory leak.
352 [Steve Henson]
353
Bodo Möller59fc2b02000-03-05 00:19:36 +0000354 *) In util/mkerr.pl (which implements 'make errors'), preserve
355 reason strings from the previous version of the .c file, as
356 the default to have only downcase letters (and digits) in
357 automatically generated reasons codes is not always appropriate.
358 [Bodo Moeller]
359
Bodo Möller0a150c52000-03-04 01:36:53 +0000360 *) In ERR_load_ERR_strings(), build an ERR_LIB_SYS error reason table
361 using strerror. Previously, ERR_reason_error_string() returned
362 library names as reason strings for SYSerr; but SYSerr is a special
363 case where small numbers are errno values, not library numbers.
364 [Bodo Moeller]
365
Bodo Möller41918452000-03-03 22:18:19 +0000366 *) Add '-dsaparam' option to 'openssl dhparam' application. This
367 converts DSA parameters into DH parameters. (When creating parameters,
368 DSA_generate_parameters is used.)
369 [Bodo Moeller]
370
371 *) Include 'length' (recommended exponent length) in C code generated
372 by 'openssl dhparam -C'.
373 [Bodo Moeller]
374
Dr. Stephen Hensond9c88a32000-03-03 00:06:40 +0000375 *) The second argument to set_label in perlasm was already being used
376 so couldn't be used as a "file scope" flag. Moved to third argument
377 which was free.
378 [Steve Henson]
379
Bodo Möller84d14402000-03-02 22:44:55 +0000380 *) In PEM_ASN1_write_bio and some other functions, use RAND_pseudo_bytes
381 instead of RAND_bytes for encryption IVs and salts.
382 [Bodo Moeller]
383
Bodo Möller5eb8ca42000-03-02 14:34:58 +0000384 *) Include RAND_status() into RAND_METHOD instead of implementing
385 it only for md_rand.c Otherwise replacing the PRNG by calling
386 RAND_set_rand_method would be impossible.
387 [Bodo Moeller]
388
Ulf Möller7a2dfc22000-03-01 19:07:58 +0000389 *) Don't let DSA_generate_key() enter an infinite loop if the random
390 number generation fails.
391 [Bodo Moeller]
392
Bodo Möller55f7d652000-03-01 07:57:25 +0000393 *) New 'rand' application for creating pseudo-random output.
394 [Bodo Moeller]
395
Ralf S. Engelschall010712f2000-02-29 15:29:02 +0000396 *) Added configuration support for Linux/IA64
397 [Rolf Haberrecker <rolf@suse.de>]
398
Ulf Möller2da0c112000-02-28 19:16:41 +0000399 *) Assembler module support for Mingw32.
400 [Ulf Möller]
401
Ulf Möllera4709b32000-02-28 19:14:46 +0000402 *) Shared library support for HPUX (in shlib/).
403 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE> and Anonymous]
404
405 *) Shared library support for Solaris gcc.
406 [Lutz Behnke <behnke@trustcenter.de>]
Bodo Möller865874f2000-02-28 18:03:16 +0000407
Richard Levitte74cdf6f2000-02-28 11:59:02 +0000408 Changes between 0.9.4 and 0.9.5 [28 Feb 2000]
Ulf Möller38e33ce2000-01-27 19:31:26 +0000409
Dr. Stephen Henson82b93182000-02-28 14:11:19 +0000410 *) PKCS7_encrypt() was adding text MIME headers twice because they
411 were added manually and by SMIME_crlf_copy().
412 [Steve Henson]
413
Dr. Stephen Henson587bb0e2000-02-27 17:34:30 +0000414 *) In bntest.c don't call BN_rand with zero bits argument.
415 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Andrew W. Gray <agray@iconsinc.com>]
416
Ulf Möller688938f2000-02-27 02:05:39 +0000417 *) BN_mul bugfix: In bn_mul_part_recursion() only the a>a[n] && b>b[n]
Andy Polyakova5770be2000-02-27 02:34:37 +0000418 case was implemented. This caused BN_div_recp() to fail occasionally.
Ulf Möller688938f2000-02-27 02:05:39 +0000419 [Ulf Möller]
420
Dr. Stephen Henson94de0412000-02-27 01:15:25 +0000421 *) Add an optional second argument to the set_label() in the perl
422 assembly language builder. If this argument exists and is set
423 to 1 it signals that the assembler should use a symbol whose
424 scope is the entire file, not just the current function. This
425 is needed with MASM which uses the format label:: for this scope.
426 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Peter Runestig <peter@runestig.com>]
427
Dr. Stephen Henson02021972000-02-26 19:25:31 +0000428 *) Change the ASN1 types so they are typedefs by default. Before
429 almost all types were #define'd to ASN1_STRING which was causing
430 STACK_OF() problems: you couldn't declare STACK_OF(ASN1_UTF8STRING)
431 for example.
432 [Steve Henson]
433
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +0000434 *) Change names of new functions to the new get1/get0 naming
435 convention: After 'get1', the caller owns a reference count
436 and has to call ..._free; 'get0' returns a pointer to some
437 data structure without incrementing reference counters.
438 (Some of the existing 'get' functions increment a reference
439 counter, some don't.)
440 Similarly, 'set1' and 'add1' functions increase reference
441 counters or duplicate objects.
Dr. Stephen Hensonc7cb16a2000-02-26 01:55:33 +0000442 [Steve Henson]
443
Dr. Stephen Hensonfbb41ae2000-02-25 00:23:48 +0000444 *) Allow for the possibility of temp RSA key generation failure:
445 the code used to assume it always worked and crashed on failure.
446 [Steve Henson]
447
Ulf Möller505b5a02000-02-24 22:57:42 +0000448 *) Fix potential buffer overrun problem in BIO_printf().
449 [Ulf Möller, using public domain code by Patrick Powell; problem
450 pointed out by David Sacerdote <das33@cornell.edu>]
451
Ulf Möller4ec2d4d2000-02-24 02:51:47 +0000452 *) Support EGD <http://www.lothar.com/tech/crypto/>. New functions
453 RAND_egd() and RAND_status(). In the command line application,
454 the EGD socket can be specified like a seed file using RANDFILE
455 or -rand.
456 [Ulf Möller]
457
Dr. Stephen Henson3142c862000-02-23 01:11:01 +0000458 *) Allow the string CERTIFICATE to be tolerated in PKCS#7 structures.
459 Some CAs (e.g. Verisign) distribute certificates in this form.
460 [Steve Henson]
461
462 *) Remove the SSL_ALLOW_ADH compile option and set the default cipher
463 list to exclude them. This means that no special compilation option
464 is needed to use anonymous DH: it just needs to be included in the
465 cipher list.
466 [Steve Henson]
467
Dr. Stephen Henson72b60352000-02-22 02:59:26 +0000468 *) Change the EVP_MD_CTX_type macro so its meaning consistent with
469 EVP_MD_type. The old functionality is available in a new macro called
470 EVP_MD_md(). Change code that uses it and update docs.
471 [Steve Henson]
472
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000473 *) ..._ctrl functions now have corresponding ..._callback_ctrl functions
474 where the 'void *' argument is replaced by a function pointer argument.
475 Previously 'void *' was abused to point to functions, which works on
476 many platforms, but is not correct. As these functions are usually
477 called by macros defined in OpenSSL header files, most source code
478 should work without changes.
Ulf Möllercdf20e02000-02-23 21:57:22 +0000479 [Richard Levitte]
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000480
481 *) <openssl/opensslconf.h> (which is created by Configure) now contains
482 sections with information on -D... compiler switches used for
483 compiling the library so that applications can see them. To enable
484 one of these sections, a pre-processor symbol OPENSSL_..._DEFINES
485 must be defined. E.g.,
486 #define OPENSSL_ALGORITHM_DEFINES
487 #include <openssl/opensslconf.h>
488 defines all pertinent NO_<algo> symbols, such as NO_IDEA, NO_RSA, etc.
Ulf Möllercdf20e02000-02-23 21:57:22 +0000489 [Richard Levitte, Ulf and Bodo Möller]
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000490
Bodo Möllerb35e9052000-02-20 23:04:06 +0000491 *) Bugfix: Tolerate fragmentation and interleaving in the SSL 3/TLS
492 record layer.
493 [Bodo Moeller]
494
Dr. Stephen Hensond754b382000-02-20 18:27:23 +0000495 *) Change the 'other' type in certificate aux info to a STACK_OF
496 X509_ALGOR. Although not an AlgorithmIdentifier as such it has
497 the required ASN1 format: arbitrary types determined by an OID.
498 [Steve Henson]
499
Dr. Stephen Henson8a208cb2000-02-18 00:54:21 +0000500 *) Add some PEM_write_X509_REQ_NEW() functions and a command line
501 argument to 'req'. This is not because the function is newer or
502 better than others it just uses the work 'NEW' in the certificate
503 request header lines. Some software needs this.
504 [Steve Henson]
505
Dr. Stephen Hensona3fe3822000-02-16 23:16:01 +0000506 *) Reorganise password command line arguments: now passwords can be
507 obtained from various sources. Delete the PEM_cb function and make
508 it the default behaviour: i.e. if the callback is NULL and the
509 usrdata argument is not NULL interpret it as a null terminated pass
510 phrase. If usrdata and the callback are NULL then the pass phrase
511 is prompted for as usual.
512 [Steve Henson]
513
Ben Lauriebd03b992000-02-16 22:15:39 +0000514 *) Add support for the Compaq Atalla crypto accelerator. If it is installed,
515 the support is automatically enabled. The resulting binaries will
516 autodetect the card and use it if present.
517 [Ben Laurie and Compaq Inc.]
518
Dr. Stephen Hensonde469ef2000-02-15 14:19:44 +0000519 *) Work around for Netscape hang bug. This sends certificate request
520 and server done in one record. Since this is perfectly legal in the
521 SSL/TLS protocol it isn't a "bug" option and is on by default. See
522 the bugs/SSLv3 entry for more info.
523 [Steve Henson]
524
Andy Polyakovbcba6cc2000-02-12 23:33:01 +0000525 *) HP-UX tune-up: new unified configs, HP C compiler bug workaround.
526 [Andy Polyakov]
527
Dr. Stephen Hensond13e4eb2000-02-12 03:03:04 +0000528 *) Add -rand argument to smime and pkcs12 applications and read/write
529 of seed file.
530 [Steve Henson]
531
Bodo Möller3ebf0be2000-02-11 17:18:50 +0000532 *) New 'passwd' tool for crypt(3) and apr1 password hashes.
Bodo Möllerbb325c72000-02-10 21:50:52 +0000533 [Bodo Moeller]
534
Dr. Stephen Hensonf07fb9b2000-02-08 01:34:59 +0000535 *) Add command line password options to the remaining applications.
536 [Steve Henson]
537
Ulf Möllercae55bf2000-02-06 15:56:59 +0000538 *) Bug fix for BN_div_recp() for numerators with an even number of
539 bits.
540 [Ulf Möller]
541
542 *) More tests in bntest.c, and changed test_bn output.
543 [Ulf Möller]
544
Andy Polyakov0fad6cb2000-02-06 11:15:20 +0000545 *) ./config recognizes MacOS X now.
546 [Andy Polyakov]
547
Ulf Möller4a6222d2000-02-06 00:25:39 +0000548 *) Bug fix for BN_div() when the first words of num and divsor are
549 equal (it gave wrong results if (rem=(n1-q*d0)&BN_MASK2) < d0).
550 [Ulf Möller]
551
Dr. Stephen Henson66430202000-02-05 21:07:56 +0000552 *) Add support for various broken PKCS#8 formats, and command line
553 options to produce them.
554 [Steve Henson]
555
Ulf Möller9b141122000-02-05 14:17:32 +0000556 *) New functions BN_CTX_start(), BN_CTX_get() and BT_CTX_end() to
557 get temporary BIGNUMs from a BN_CTX.
558 [Ulf Möller]
559
560 *) Correct return values in BN_mod_exp_mont() and BN_mod_exp2_mont()
561 for p == 0.
562 [Ulf Möller]
563
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf57d842000-02-04 14:01:38 +0000564 *) Change the SSLeay_add_all_*() functions to OpenSSL_add_all_*() and
565 include a #define from the old name to the new. The original intent
566 was that statically linked binaries could for example just call
567 SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() to just add ciphers to the table and not
568 link with digests. This never worked becayse SSLeay_add_all_digests()
569 and SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() were in the same source file so calling
570 one would link with the other. They are now in separate source files.
571 [Steve Henson]
572
Dr. Stephen Henson82fc1d92000-02-03 02:56:48 +0000573 *) Add a new -notext option to 'ca' and a -pubkey option to 'spkac'.
574 [Steve Henson]
575
Bodo Möllere74231e2000-02-02 21:20:44 +0000576 *) Use a less unusual form of the Miller-Rabin primality test (it used
577 a binary algorithm for exponentiation integrated into the Miller-Rabin
578 loop, our standard modexp algorithms are faster).
579 [Bodo Moeller]
580
Bodo Möller2c5fe5b2000-02-01 07:50:42 +0000581 *) Support for the EBCDIC character set completed.
Ulf Möller8efb6012000-02-01 02:21:16 +0000582 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@Mch.SNI.De>]
583
Ulf Möller98d0b2e2000-01-30 23:34:33 +0000584 *) Source code cleanups: use const where appropriate, eliminate casts,
585 use void * instead of char * in lhash.
586 [Ulf Möller]
587
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +0000588 *) Bugfix: ssl3_send_server_key_exchange was not restartable
589 (the state was not changed to SSL3_ST_SW_KEY_EXCH_B, and because of
590 this the server could overwrite ephemeral keys that the client
591 has already seen).
592 [Bodo Moeller]
593
594 *) Turn DSA_is_prime into a macro that calls BN_is_prime,
595 using 50 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test.
596
597 DSA_generate_parameters now uses BN_is_prime_fasttest (with 50
598 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test as required by the appendix
599 to FIPS PUB 186[-1]) instead of DSA_is_prime.
600 As BN_is_prime_fasttest includes trial division, DSA parameter
601 generation becomes much faster.
602
603 This implies a change for the callback functions in DSA_is_prime
Bodo Möllercdd43b52000-01-30 11:05:39 +0000604 and DSA_generate_parameters: The callback function is called once
605 for each positive witness in the Rabin-Miller test, not just
606 occasionally in the inner loop; and the parameters to the
607 callback function now provide an iteration count for the outer
608 loop rather than for the current invocation of the inner loop.
609 DSA_generate_parameters additionally can call the callback
610 function with an 'iteration count' of -1, meaning that a
611 candidate has passed the trial division test (when q is generated
612 from an application-provided seed, trial division is skipped).
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +0000613 [Bodo Moeller]
614
Bodo Möller7865b872000-01-30 02:40:38 +0000615 *) New function BN_is_prime_fasttest that optionally does trial
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +0000616 division before starting the Rabin-Miller test and has
617 an additional BN_CTX * argument (whereas BN_is_prime always
618 has to allocate at least one BN_CTX).
Bodo Möller1baa9492000-01-30 03:32:28 +0000619 'callback(1, -1, cb_arg)' is called when a number has passed the
620 trial division stage.
621 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +0000622
Dr. Stephen Hensone1314b52000-01-29 00:00:26 +0000623 *) Fix for bug in CRL encoding. The validity dates weren't being handled
624 as ASN1_TIME.
625 [Steve Henson]
626
Dr. Stephen Henson90644dd2000-01-28 01:35:31 +0000627 *) New -pkcs12 option to CA.pl script to write out a PKCS#12 file.
628 [Steve Henson]
629
Ulf Möller38e33ce2000-01-27 19:31:26 +0000630 *) New function BN_pseudo_rand().
631 [Ulf Möller]
Ralf S. Engelschalld91e2011999-08-09 11:14:08 +0000632
Ulf Möllere93f9a32000-01-27 01:50:42 +0000633 *) Clean up BN_mod_mul_montgomery(): replace the broken (and unreadable)
634 bignum version of BN_from_montgomery() with the working code from
635 SSLeay 0.9.0 (the word based version is faster anyway), and clean up
636 the comments.
637 [Ulf Möller]
638
Bodo Möller2557eae2000-01-24 17:57:56 +0000639 *) Avoid a race condition in s2_clnt.c (function get_server_hello) that
640 made it impossible to use the same SSL_SESSION data structure in
641 SSL2 clients in multiple threads.
642 [Bodo Moeller]
643
Bodo Möllera46faa22000-01-24 16:02:29 +0000644 *) The return value of RAND_load_file() no longer counts bytes obtained
645 by stat(). RAND_load_file(..., -1) is new and uses the complete file
646 to seed the PRNG (previously an explicit byte count was required).
647 [Ulf Möller, Bodo Möller]
Bodo Mölleraabbb742000-01-24 14:42:26 +0000648
Dr. Stephen Hensondd9d2332000-01-23 23:41:49 +0000649 *) Clean up CRYPTO_EX_DATA functions, some of these didn't have prototypes
650 used (char *) instead of (void *) and had casts all over the place.
651 [Steve Henson]
652
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +0000653 *) Make BN_generate_prime() return NULL on error if ret!=NULL.
654 [Ulf Möller]
655
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +0000656 *) Retain source code compatibility for BN_prime_checks macro:
657 BN_is_prime(..., BN_prime_checks, ...) now uses
658 BN_prime_checks_for_size to determine the appropriate number of
659 Rabin-Miller iterations.
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +0000660 [Ulf Möller]
661
662 *) Diffie-Hellman uses "safe" primes: DH_check() return code renamed to
663 DH_CHECK_P_NOT_SAFE_PRIME.
664 (Check if this is true? OpenPGP calls them "strong".)
665 [Ulf Möller]
666
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +0000667 *) Merge the functionality of "dh" and "gendh" programs into a new program
668 "dhparam". The old programs are retained for now but will handle DH keys
669 (instead of parameters) in future.
670 [Steve Henson]
671
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +0000672 *) Make the ciphers, s_server and s_client programs check the return values
673 when a new cipher list is set.
674 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson018e57c2000-01-22 03:17:06 +0000675
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +0000676 *) Enhance the SSL/TLS cipher mechanism to correctly handle the TLS 56bit
677 ciphers. Before when the 56bit ciphers were enabled the sorting was
678 wrong.
679
680 The syntax for the cipher sorting has been extended to support sorting by
681 cipher-strength (using the strength_bits hard coded in the tables).
682 The new command is "@STRENGTH" (see also doc/apps/ciphers.pod).
683
684 Fix a bug in the cipher-command parser: when supplying a cipher command
685 string with an "undefined" symbol (neither command nor alphanumeric
686 [A-Za-z0-9], ssl_set_cipher_list used to hang in an endless loop. Now
687 an error is flagged.
688
689 Due to the strength-sorting extension, the code of the
690 ssl_create_cipher_list() function was completely rearranged. I hope that
691 the readability was also increased :-)
692 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE>]
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +0000693
Dr. Stephen Henson81004902000-01-21 02:42:14 +0000694 *) Minor change to 'x509' utility. The -CAcreateserial option now uses 1
695 for the first serial number and places 2 in the serial number file. This
696 avoids problems when the root CA is created with serial number zero and
697 the first user certificate has the same issuer name and serial number
698 as the root CA.
699 [Steve Henson]
700
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +0000701 *) Fixes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities, change the 'req' program so it uses
702 the new code. Add documentation for this stuff.
703 [Steve Henson]
704
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +0000705 *) Changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities. These have been renamed from
706 X509_*() to X509at_*() on the grounds that they don't handle X509
707 structures and behave in an analagous way to the X509v3 functions:
708 they shouldn't be called directly but wrapper functions should be used
709 instead.
710
711 So we also now have some wrapper functions that call the X509at functions
712 when passed certificate requests. (TO DO: similar things can be done with
713 PKCS#7 signed and unsigned attributes, PKCS#12 attributes and a few other
714 things. Some of these need some d2i or i2d and print functionality
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +0000715 because they handle more complex structures.)
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +0000716 [Steve Henson]
717
Ulf Mölleraa82db42000-01-16 21:10:00 +0000718 *) Add missing #ifndefs that caused missing symbols when building libssl
719 as a shared library without RSA. Use #ifndef NO_SSL2 instead of
720 NO_RSA in ssl/s2*.c.
721 [Kris Kennaway <kris@hub.freebsd.org>, modified by Ulf Möller]
722
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +0000723 *) Precautions against using the PRNG uninitialized: RAND_bytes() now
Bodo Möller09837602000-01-13 21:20:26 +0000724 has a return value which indicates the quality of the random data
725 (1 = ok, 0 = not seeded). Also an error is recorded on the thread's
Ulf Möller373b5752000-01-16 15:58:17 +0000726 error queue. New function RAND_pseudo_bytes() generates output that is
Bodo Möller853f7572000-02-19 15:22:53 +0000727 guaranteed to be unique but not unpredictable. RAND_add is like
728 RAND_seed, but takes an extra argument for an entropy estimate
729 (RAND_seed always assumes full entropy).
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +0000730 [Ulf Möller]
731
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +0000732 *) Do more iterations of Rabin-Miller probable prime test (specifically,
733 3 for 1024-bit primes, 6 for 512-bit primes, 12 for 256-bit primes
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +0000734 instead of only 2 for all lengths; see BN_prime_checks_for_size definition
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +0000735 in crypto/bn/bn_prime.c for the complete table). This guarantees a
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +0000736 false-positive rate of at most 2^-80 for random input.
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +0000737 [Bodo Moeller]
738
Bodo Möller3cc6cde2000-01-11 08:09:27 +0000739 *) Rewrite ssl3_read_n (ssl/s3_pkt.c) avoiding a couple of bugs.
Bodo Möllerc51ae172000-01-11 01:07:26 +0000740 [Bodo Moeller]
741
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +0000742 *) New function X509_CTX_rget_chain() (renamed to X509_CTX_get1_chain
743 in the 0.9.5 release), this returns the chain
Dr. Stephen Henson25f923d2000-01-09 14:21:40 +0000744 from an X509_CTX structure with a dup of the stack and all
745 the X509 reference counts upped: so the stack will exist
746 after X509_CTX_cleanup() has been called. Modify pkcs12.c
747 to use this.
748
749 Also make SSL_SESSION_print() print out the verify return
750 code.
751 [Steve Henson]
752
Dr. Stephen Hensondad666f2000-01-08 03:16:04 +0000753 *) Add manpage for the pkcs12 command. Also change the default
754 behaviour so MAC iteration counts are used unless the new
755 -nomaciter option is used. This improves file security and
756 only older versions of MSIE (4.0 for example) need it.
757 [Steve Henson]
758
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000759 *) Honor the no-xxx Configure options when creating .DEF files.
760 [Ulf Möller]
761
Dr. Stephen Henson35f48502000-01-07 00:55:54 +0000762 *) Add PKCS#10 attributes to field table: challengePassword,
763 unstructuredName and unstructuredAddress. These are taken from
764 draft PKCS#9 v2.0 but are compatible with v1.2 provided no
765 international characters are used.
766
767 More changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE code: allow the setting of types
768 based on strings. Remove the 'loc' parameter when adding
769 attributes because these will be a SET OF encoding which is sorted
770 in ASN1 order.
771 [Steve Henson]
772
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +0000773 *) Initial changes to the 'req' utility to allow request generation
774 automation. This will allow an application to just generate a template
775 file containing all the field values and have req construct the
776 request.
777
778 Initial support for X509_ATTRIBUTE handling. Stacks of these are
779 used all over the place including certificate requests and PKCS#7
780 structures. They are currently handled manually where necessary with
781 some primitive wrappers for PKCS#7. The new functions behave in a
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000782 manner analogous to the X509 extension functions: they allow
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +0000783 attributes to be looked up by NID and added.
784
785 Later something similar to the X509V3 code would be desirable to
786 automatically handle the encoding, decoding and printing of the
787 more complex types. The string types like challengePassword can
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000788 be handled by the string table functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +0000789
790 Also modified the multi byte string table handling. Now there is
791 a 'global mask' which masks out certain types. The table itself
792 can use the flag STABLE_NO_MASK to ignore the mask setting: this
793 is useful when for example there is only one permissible type
794 (as in countryName) and using the mask might result in no valid
795 types at all.
796 [Steve Henson]
797
Bodo Möllerca031092000-01-06 01:19:17 +0000798 *) Clean up 'Finished' handling, and add functions SSL_get_finished and
799 SSL_get_peer_finished to allow applications to obtain the latest
800 Finished messages sent to the peer or expected from the peer,
801 respectively. (SSL_get_peer_finished is usually the Finished message
802 actually received from the peer, otherwise the protocol will be aborted.)
803
804 As the Finished message are message digests of the complete handshake
805 (with a total of 192 bits for TLS 1.0 and more for SSL 3.0), they can
806 be used for external authentication procedures when the authentication
807 provided by SSL/TLS is not desired or is not enough.
Bodo Möllerf2d9a322000-01-06 00:24:24 +0000808 [Bodo Moeller]
809
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +0000810 *) Enhanced support for Alpha Linux is added. Now ./config checks if
811 the host supports BWX extension and if Compaq C is present on the
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +0000812 $PATH. Just exploiting of the BWX extension results in 20-30%
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +0000813 performance kick for some algorithms, e.g. DES and RC4 to mention
814 a couple. Compaq C in turn generates ~20% faster code for MD5 and
815 SHA1.
816 [Andy Polyakov]
817
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +0000818 *) Add support for MS "fast SGC". This is arguably a violation of the
819 SSL3/TLS protocol. Netscape SGC does two handshakes: the first with
820 weak crypto and after checking the certificate is SGC a second one
821 with strong crypto. MS SGC stops the first handshake after receiving
822 the server certificate message and sends a second client hello. Since
823 a server will typically do all the time consuming operations before
824 expecting any further messages from the client (server key exchange
825 is the most expensive) there is little difference between the two.
826
827 To get OpenSSL to support MS SGC we have to permit a second client
828 hello message after we have sent server done. In addition we have to
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000829 reset the MAC if we do get this second client hello.
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +0000830 [Steve Henson]
831
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +0000832 *) Add a function 'd2i_AutoPrivateKey()' this will automatically decide
833 if a DER encoded private key is RSA or DSA traditional format. Changed
834 d2i_PrivateKey_bio() to use it. This is only needed for the "traditional"
835 format DER encoded private key. Newer code should use PKCS#8 format which
836 has the key type encoded in the ASN1 structure. Added DER private key
837 support to pkcs8 application.
838 [Steve Henson]
839
Bodo Möller47134b71999-12-29 17:43:03 +0000840 *) SSL 3/TLS 1 servers now don't request certificates when an anonymous
841 ciphersuites has been selected (as required by the SSL 3/TLS 1
842 specifications). Exception: When SSL_VERIFY_FAIL_IF_NO_PEER_CERT
843 is set, we interpret this as a request to violate the specification
844 (the worst that can happen is a handshake failure, and 'correct'
845 behaviour would result in a handshake failure anyway).
846 [Bodo Moeller]
847
Bodo Möller45fd4db1999-12-29 14:29:32 +0000848 *) In SSL_CTX_add_session, take into account that there might be multiple
849 SSL_SESSION structures with the same session ID (e.g. when two threads
850 concurrently obtain them from an external cache).
851 The internal cache can handle only one SSL_SESSION with a given ID,
852 so if there's a conflict, we now throw out the old one to achieve
853 consistency.
854 [Bodo Moeller]
855
Dr. Stephen Hensonf45f40f1999-12-29 02:59:18 +0000856 *) Add OIDs for idea and blowfish in CBC mode. This will allow both
857 to be used in PKCS#5 v2.0 and S/MIME. Also add checking to
858 some routines that use cipher OIDs: some ciphers do not have OIDs
859 defined and so they cannot be used for S/MIME and PKCS#5 v2.0 for
860 example.
861 [Steve Henson]
862
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +0000863 *) Simplify the trust setting structure and code. Now we just have
864 two sequences of OIDs for trusted and rejected settings. These will
865 typically have values the same as the extended key usage extension
866 and any application specific purposes.
867
868 The trust checking code now has a default behaviour: it will just
869 check for an object with the same NID as the passed id. Functions can
870 be provided to override either the default behaviour or the behaviour
871 for a given id. SSL client, server and email already have functions
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +0000872 in place for compatibility: they check the NID and also return "trusted"
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +0000873 if the certificate is self signed.
874 [Steve Henson]
875
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +0000876 *) Add d2i,i2d bio/fp functions for PrivateKey: these convert the
877 traditional format into an EVP_PKEY structure.
878 [Steve Henson]
879
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +0000880 *) Add a password callback function PEM_cb() which either prompts for
881 a password if usr_data is NULL or otherwise assumes it is a null
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +0000882 terminated password. Allow passwords to be passed on command line
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +0000883 environment or config files in a few more utilities.
884 [Steve Henson]
885
Dr. Stephen Henson525f51f1999-12-23 02:02:42 +0000886 *) Add a bunch of DER and PEM functions to handle PKCS#8 format private
887 keys. Add some short names for PKCS#8 PBE algorithms and allow them
888 to be specified on the command line for the pkcs8 and pkcs12 utilities.
889 Update documentation.
890 [Steve Henson]
891
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +0000892 *) Support for ASN1 "NULL" type. This could be handled before by using
893 ASN1_TYPE but there wasn't any function that would try to read a NULL
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +0000894 and produce an error if it couldn't. For compatibility we also have
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +0000895 ASN1_NULL_new() and ASN1_NULL_free() functions but these are faked and
896 don't allocate anything because they don't need to.
897 [Steve Henson]
898
Andy Polyakov099f1b31999-12-19 16:17:45 +0000899 *) Initial support for MacOS is now provided. Examine INSTALL.MacOS
900 for details.
901 [Andy Polyakov, Roy Woods <roy@centicsystems.ca>]
902
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +0000903 *) Rebuild of the memory allocation routines used by OpenSSL code and
904 possibly others as well. The purpose is to make an interface that
905 provide hooks so anyone can build a separate set of allocation and
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +0000906 deallocation routines to be used by OpenSSL, for example memory
907 pool implementations, or something else, which was previously hard
908 since Malloc(), Realloc() and Free() were defined as macros having
Richard Levittede73e392000-01-11 22:32:37 +0000909 the values malloc, realloc and free, respectively (except for Win32
910 compilations). The same is provided for memory debugging code.
911 OpenSSL already comes with functionality to find memory leaks, but
912 this gives people a chance to debug other memory problems.
Richard Levitted8df48a1999-12-18 01:14:39 +0000913
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +0000914 With these changes, a new set of functions and macros have appeared:
915
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000916 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() [F]
917 CRYPTO_get_mem_debug_functions() [F]
918 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options() [F]
919 CRYPTO_dbg_get_options() [F]
920 CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() [M]
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +0000921
922 The memory debug functions are NULL by default, unless the library
923 is compiled with CRYPTO_MDEBUG or friends is defined. If someone
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +0000924 wants to debug memory anyway, CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() (which
925 gives the standard debugging functions that come with OpenSSL) or
926 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() (tells OpenSSL to use functions
927 provided by the library user) must be used. When the standard
928 debugging functions are used, CRYPTO_dbg_set_options can be used to
929 request additional information:
930 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options(V_CYRPTO_MDEBUG_xxx) corresponds to setting
931 the CRYPTO_MDEBUG_xxx macro when compiling the library.
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +0000932
933 Also, things like CRYPTO_set_mem_functions will always give the
934 expected result (the new set of functions is used for allocation
935 and deallocation) at all times, regardless of platform and compiler
936 options.
937
938 To finish it up, some functions that were never use in any other
939 way than through macros have a new API and new semantic:
940
941 CRYPTO_dbg_malloc()
942 CRYPTO_dbg_realloc()
943 CRYPTO_dbg_free()
944
945 All macros of value have retained their old syntax.
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +0000946 [Richard Levitte and Bodo Moeller]
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +0000947
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2166641999-12-11 20:04:06 +0000948 *) Some S/MIME fixes. The OID for SMIMECapabilities was wrong, the
949 ordering of SMIMECapabilities wasn't in "strength order" and there
950 was a missing NULL in the AlgorithmIdentifier for the SHA1 signature
951 algorithm.
952 [Steve Henson]
953
Dr. Stephen Hensond8223ef1999-12-10 13:46:48 +0000954 *) Some ASN1 types with illegal zero length encoding (INTEGER,
955 ENUMERATED and OBJECT IDENTIFIER) choked the ASN1 routines.
956 [Frans Heymans <fheymans@isaserver.be>, modified by Steve Henson]
957
Dr. Stephen Henson5a9a4b21999-12-05 00:40:59 +0000958 *) Merge in my S/MIME library for OpenSSL. This provides a simple
959 S/MIME API on top of the PKCS#7 code, a MIME parser (with enough
960 functionality to handle multipart/signed properly) and a utility
961 called 'smime' to call all this stuff. This is based on code I
962 originally wrote for Celo who have kindly allowed it to be
963 included in OpenSSL.
964 [Steve Henson]
965
Bodo Möllercddfe781999-12-03 20:24:21 +0000966 *) Add variants des_set_key_checked and des_set_key_unchecked of
967 des_set_key (aka des_key_sched). Global variable des_check_key
968 decides which of these is called by des_set_key; this way
969 des_check_key behaves as it always did, but applications and
970 the library itself, which was buggy for des_check_key == 1,
971 have a cleaner way to pick the version they need.
972 [Bodo Moeller]
973
Dr. Stephen Henson21131f01999-12-03 03:46:18 +0000974 *) New function PKCS12_newpass() which changes the password of a
975 PKCS12 structure.
976 [Steve Henson]
977
Dr. Stephen Hensondd413411999-12-02 02:33:56 +0000978 *) Modify X509_TRUST and X509_PURPOSE so it also uses a static and
979 dynamic mix. In both cases the ids can be used as an index into the
980 table. Also modified the X509_TRUST_add() and X509_PURPOSE_add()
981 functions so they accept a list of the field values and the
982 application doesn't need to directly manipulate the X509_TRUST
983 structure.
984 [Steve Henson]
985
986 *) Modify the ASN1_STRING_TABLE stuff so it also uses bsearch and doesn't
987 need initialising.
988 [Steve Henson]
989
Dr. Stephen Henson08cba611999-12-01 01:49:46 +0000990 *) Modify the way the V3 extension code looks up extensions. This now
991 works in a similar way to the object code: we have some "standard"
992 extensions in a static table which is searched with OBJ_bsearch()
993 and the application can add dynamic ones if needed. The file
994 crypto/x509v3/ext_dat.h now has the info: this file needs to be
995 updated whenever a new extension is added to the core code and kept
996 in ext_nid order. There is a simple program 'tabtest.c' which checks
997 this. New extensions are not added too often so this file can readily
998 be maintained manually.
999
1000 There are two big advantages in doing things this way. The extensions
1001 can be looked up immediately and no longer need to be "added" using
1002 X509V3_add_standard_extensions(): this function now does nothing.
1003 [Side note: I get *lots* of email saying the extension code doesn't
1004 work because people forget to call this function]
1005 Also no dynamic allocation is done unless new extensions are added:
1006 so if we don't add custom extensions there is no need to call
1007 X509V3_EXT_cleanup().
1008 [Steve Henson]
1009
Ben Lauriefea9afb1999-11-30 20:15:19 +00001010 *) Modify enc utility's salting as follows: make salting the default. Add a
1011 magic header, so unsalted files fail gracefully instead of just decrypting
1012 to garbage. This is because not salting is a big security hole, so people
1013 should be discouraged from doing it.
1014 [Ben Laurie]
1015
Dr. Stephen Henson98682321999-11-27 01:14:04 +00001016 *) Fixes and enhancements to the 'x509' utility. It allowed a message
1017 digest to be passed on the command line but it only used this
1018 parameter when signing a certificate. Modified so all relevant
1019 operations are affected by the digest parameter including the
1020 -fingerprint and -x509toreq options. Also -x509toreq choked if a
1021 DSA key was used because it didn't fix the digest.
1022 [Steve Henson]
1023
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001024 *) Initial certificate chain verify code. Currently tests the untrusted
1025 certificates for consistency with the verify purpose (which is set
1026 when the X509_STORE_CTX structure is set up) and checks the pathlength.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001027
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001028 There is a NO_CHAIN_VERIFY compilation option to keep the old behaviour:
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001029 this is because it will reject chains with invalid extensions whereas
1030 every previous version of OpenSSL and SSLeay made no checks at all.
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001031
1032 Trust code: checks the root CA for the relevant trust settings. Trust
1033 settings have an initial value consistent with the verify purpose: e.g.
1034 if the verify purpose is for SSL client use it expects the CA to be
1035 trusted for SSL client use. However the default value can be changed to
1036 permit custom trust settings: one example of this would be to only trust
1037 certificates from a specific "secure" set of CAs.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001038
1039 Also added X509_STORE_CTX_new() and X509_STORE_CTX_free() functions
1040 which should be used for version portability: especially since the
1041 verify structure is likely to change more often now.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001042
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001043 SSL integration. Add purpose and trust to SSL_CTX and SSL and functions
1044 to set them. If not set then assume SSL clients will verify SSL servers
1045 and vice versa.
1046
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001047 Two new options to the verify program: -untrusted allows a set of
1048 untrusted certificates to be passed in and -purpose which sets the
1049 intended purpose of the certificate. If a purpose is set then the
1050 new chain verify code is used to check extension consistency.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001051 [Steve Henson]
1052
1053 *) Support for the authority information access extension.
Dr. Stephen Henson6d3724d1999-11-23 18:50:28 +00001054 [Steve Henson]
1055
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001056 *) Modify RSA and DSA PEM read routines to transparently handle
1057 PKCS#8 format private keys. New *_PUBKEY_* functions that handle
1058 public keys in a format compatible with certificate
1059 SubjectPublicKeyInfo structures. Unfortunately there were already
1060 functions called *_PublicKey_* which used various odd formats so
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001061 these are retained for compatibility: however the DSA variants were
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001062 never in a public release so they have been deleted. Changed dsa/rsa
1063 utilities to handle the new format: note no releases ever handled public
1064 keys so we should be OK.
1065
1066 The primary motivation for this change is to avoid the same fiasco
1067 that dogs private keys: there are several incompatible private key
1068 formats some of which are standard and some OpenSSL specific and
1069 require various evil hacks to allow partial transparent handling and
1070 even then it doesn't work with DER formats. Given the option anything
1071 other than PKCS#8 should be dumped: but the other formats have to
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001072 stay in the name of compatibility.
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001073
1074 With public keys and the benefit of hindsight one standard format
1075 is used which works with EVP_PKEY, RSA or DSA structures: though
1076 it clearly returns an error if you try to read the wrong kind of key.
1077
1078 Added a -pubkey option to the 'x509' utility to output the public key.
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001079 Also rename the EVP_PKEY_get_*() to EVP_PKEY_rget_*()
1080 (renamed to EVP_PKEY_get1_*() in the OpenSSL 0.9.5 release) and add
1081 EVP_PKEY_rset_*() functions (renamed to EVP_PKEY_set1_*())
1082 that do the same as the EVP_PKEY_assign_*() except they up the
1083 reference count of the added key (they don't "swallow" the
1084 supplied key).
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001085 [Steve Henson]
1086
1087 *) Fixes to crypto/x509/by_file.c the code to read in certificates and
1088 CRLs would fail if the file contained no certificates or no CRLs:
1089 added a new function to read in both types and return the number
1090 read: this means that if none are read it will be an error. The
1091 DER versions of the certificate and CRL reader would always fail
1092 because it isn't possible to mix certificates and CRLs in DER format
1093 without choking one or the other routine. Changed this to just read
1094 a certificate: this is the best we can do. Also modified the code
1095 in apps/verify.c to take notice of return codes: it was previously
1096 attempting to read in certificates from NULL pointers and ignoring
1097 any errors: this is one reason why the cert and CRL reader seemed
1098 to work. It doesn't check return codes from the default certificate
1099 routines: these may well fail if the certificates aren't installed.
1100 [Steve Henson]
1101
Dr. Stephen Hensona716d721999-11-19 02:19:58 +00001102 *) Code to support otherName option in GeneralName.
1103 [Steve Henson]
1104
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001105 *) First update to verify code. Change the verify utility
1106 so it warns if it is passed a self signed certificate:
1107 for consistency with the normal behaviour. X509_verify
1108 has been modified to it will now verify a self signed
1109 certificate if *exactly* the same certificate appears
1110 in the store: it was previously impossible to trust a
1111 single self signed certificate. This means that:
1112 openssl verify ss.pem
1113 now gives a warning about a self signed certificate but
1114 openssl verify -CAfile ss.pem ss.pem
1115 is OK.
1116 [Steve Henson]
1117
Bodo Möllerb1fe6ca1999-11-16 23:15:41 +00001118 *) For servers, store verify_result in SSL_SESSION data structure
1119 (and add it to external session representation).
1120 This is needed when client certificate verifications fails,
1121 but an application-provided verification callback (set by
1122 SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback) allows accepting the session
1123 anyway (i.e. leaves x509_store_ctx->error != X509_V_OK
1124 but returns 1): When the session is reused, we have to set
1125 ssl->verify_result to the appropriate error code to avoid
1126 security holes.
1127 [Bodo Moeller, problem pointed out by Lutz Jaenicke]
1128
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001129 *) Fix a bug in the new PKCS#7 code: it didn't consider the
1130 case in PKCS7_dataInit() where the signed PKCS7 structure
1131 didn't contain any existing data because it was being created.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001132 [Po-Cheng Chen <pocheng@nst.com.tw>, slightly modified by Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001133
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd699ac1999-11-16 02:49:25 +00001134 *) Add a salt to the key derivation routines in enc.c. This
1135 forms the first 8 bytes of the encrypted file. Also add a
1136 -S option to allow a salt to be input on the command line.
1137 [Steve Henson]
1138
Dr. Stephen Hensone947f391999-11-16 00:56:03 +00001139 *) New function X509_cmp(). Oddly enough there wasn't a function
1140 to compare two certificates. We do this by working out the SHA1
1141 hash and comparing that. X509_cmp() will be needed by the trust
1142 code.
1143 [Steve Henson]
1144
Bodo Möller07e6dbd2000-01-28 21:26:30 +00001145 *) SSL_get1_session() is like SSL_get_session(), but increments
1146 the reference count in the SSL_SESSION returned.
Mark J. Coxb7cfcfb1999-11-15 16:31:31 +00001147 [Geoff Thorpe <geoff@eu.c2.net>]
1148
Dr. Stephen Henson06556a11999-11-14 23:10:50 +00001149 *) Fix for 'req': it was adding a null to request attributes.
1150 Also change the X509_LOOKUP and X509_INFO code to handle
1151 certificate auxiliary information.
1152 [Steve Henson]
1153
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001154 *) Add support for 40 and 64 bit RC2 and RC4 algorithms: document
1155 the 'enc' command.
1156 [Steve Henson]
1157
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001158 *) Add the possibility to add extra information to the memory leak
1159 detecting output, to form tracebacks, showing from where each
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001160 allocation was originated: CRYPTO_push_info("constant string") adds
1161 the string plus current file name and line number to a per-thread
1162 stack, CRYPTO_pop_info() does the obvious, CRYPTO_remove_all_info()
1163 is like calling CYRPTO_pop_info() until the stack is empty.
1164 Also updated memory leak detection code to be multi-thread-safe.
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001165 [Richard Levitte]
1166
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001167 *) Add options -text and -noout to pkcs7 utility and delete the
Dr. Stephen Henson954ef7e1999-11-12 01:42:25 +00001168 encryption options which never did anything. Update docs.
1169 [Steve Henson]
1170
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf298111999-11-11 18:41:31 +00001171 *) Add options to some of the utilities to allow the pass phrase
1172 to be included on either the command line (not recommended on
1173 OSes like Unix) or read from the environment. Update the
1174 manpages and fix a few bugs.
1175 [Steve Henson]
1176
Dr. Stephen Hensonaba3e651999-11-10 02:52:17 +00001177 *) Add a few manpages for some of the openssl commands.
1178 [Steve Henson]
1179
Dr. Stephen Hensona0ad17b1999-11-08 13:58:08 +00001180 *) Fix the -revoke option in ca. It was freeing up memory twice,
1181 leaking and not finding already revoked certificates.
1182 [Steve Henson]
1183
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001184 *) Extensive changes to support certificate auxiliary information.
1185 This involves the use of X509_CERT_AUX structure and X509_AUX
1186 functions. An X509_AUX function such as PEM_read_X509_AUX()
1187 can still read in a certificate file in the usual way but it
1188 will also read in any additional "auxiliary information". By
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001189 doing things this way a fair degree of compatibility can be
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001190 retained: existing certificates can have this information added
1191 using the new 'x509' options.
1192
1193 Current auxiliary information includes an "alias" and some trust
1194 settings. The trust settings will ultimately be used in enhanced
1195 certificate chain verification routines: currently a certificate
1196 can only be trusted if it is self signed and then it is trusted
1197 for all purposes.
1198 [Steve Henson]
1199
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001200 *) Fix assembler for Alpha (tested only on DEC OSF not Linux or *BSD).
1201 The problem was that one of the replacement routines had not been working
1202 since SSLeay releases. For now the offending routine has been replaced
1203 with non-optimised assembler. Even so, this now gives around 95%
1204 performance improvement for 1024 bit RSA signs.
Mark J. Coxce2c95b1999-11-03 14:10:10 +00001205 [Mark Cox]
1206
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001207 *) Hack to fix PKCS#7 decryption when used with some unorthodox RC2
1208 handling. Most clients have the effective key size in bits equal to
1209 the key length in bits: so a 40 bit RC2 key uses a 40 bit (5 byte) key.
1210 A few however don't do this and instead use the size of the decrypted key
1211 to determine the RC2 key length and the AlgorithmIdentifier to determine
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001212 the effective key length. In this case the effective key length can still
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001213 be 40 bits but the key length can be 168 bits for example. This is fixed
1214 by manually forcing an RC2 key into the EVP_PKEY structure because the
1215 EVP code can't currently handle unusual RC2 key sizes: it always assumes
1216 the key length and effective key length are equal.
1217 [Steve Henson]
1218
Dr. Stephen Henson74400f71999-10-27 00:15:11 +00001219 *) Add a bunch of functions that should simplify the creation of
1220 X509_NAME structures. Now you should be able to do:
1221 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, "CN", MBSTRING_ASC, "Steve", -1, -1, 0);
1222 and have it automatically work out the correct field type and fill in
1223 the structures. The more adventurous can try:
1224 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, field, MBSTRING_UTF8, str, -1, -1, 0);
1225 and it will (hopefully) work out the correct multibyte encoding.
1226 [Steve Henson]
1227
1228 *) Change the 'req' utility to use the new field handling and multibyte
1229 copy routines. Before the DN field creation was handled in an ad hoc
1230 way in req, ca, and x509 which was rather broken and didn't support
1231 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings. Since some software doesn't implement
1232 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings yet, they can be enabled using the config file
1233 using the dirstring_type option. See the new comment in the default
1234 openssl.cnf for more info.
1235 [Steve Henson]
1236
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001237 *) Make crypto/rand/md_rand.c more robust:
Bodo Möller62ac2931999-10-26 16:26:48 +00001238 - Assure unique random numbers after fork().
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001239 - Make sure that concurrent threads access the global counter and
1240 md serializably so that we never lose entropy in them
1241 or use exactly the same state in multiple threads.
1242 Access to the large state is not always serializable because
1243 the additional locking could be a performance killer, and
1244 md should be large enough anyway.
1245 [Bodo Moeller]
1246
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001247 *) New file apps/app_rand.c with commonly needed functionality
1248 for handling the random seed file.
1249
1250 Use the random seed file in some applications that previously did not:
1251 ca,
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001252 dsaparam -genkey (which also ignored its '-rand' option),
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001253 s_client,
1254 s_server,
1255 x509 (when signing).
1256 Except on systems with /dev/urandom, it is crucial to have a random
1257 seed file at least for key creation, DSA signing, and for DH exchanges;
Bodo Möller99e87561999-10-26 11:19:42 +00001258 for RSA signatures we could do without one.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001259
1260 gendh and gendsa (unlike genrsa) used to read only the first byte
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001261 of each file listed in the '-rand' option. The function as previously
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001262 found in genrsa is now in app_rand.c and is used by all programs
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001263 that support '-rand'.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001264 [Bodo Moeller]
1265
1266 *) In RAND_write_file, use mode 0600 for creating files;
1267 don't just chmod when it may be too late.
1268 [Bodo Moeller]
1269
1270 *) Report an error from X509_STORE_load_locations
1271 when X509_LOOKUP_load_file or X509_LOOKUP_add_dir failed.
1272 [Bill Perry]
1273
Dr. Stephen Henson462f79e1999-10-21 13:20:49 +00001274 *) New function ASN1_mbstring_copy() this copies a string in either
1275 ASCII, Unicode, Universal (4 bytes per character) or UTF8 format
1276 into an ASN1_STRING type. A mask of permissible types is passed
1277 and it chooses the "minimal" type to use or an error if not type
1278 is suitable.
1279 [Steve Henson]
1280
Dr. Stephen Henson08e9c1a1999-10-20 01:50:23 +00001281 *) Add function equivalents to the various macros in asn1.h. The old
1282 macros are retained with an M_ prefix. Code inside the library can
1283 use the M_ macros. External code (including the openssl utility)
1284 should *NOT* in order to be "shared library friendly".
1285 [Steve Henson]
1286
Dr. Stephen Henson673b1021999-10-13 01:11:56 +00001287 *) Add various functions that can check a certificate's extensions
1288 to see if it usable for various purposes such as SSL client,
1289 server or S/MIME and CAs of these types. This is currently
1290 VERY EXPERIMENTAL but will ultimately be used for certificate chain
1291 verification. Also added a -purpose flag to x509 utility to
1292 print out all the purposes.
1293 [Steve Henson]
1294
Dr. Stephen Henson56a3fec1999-10-11 01:30:04 +00001295 *) Add a CRYPTO_EX_DATA to X509 certificate structure and associated
1296 functions.
1297 [Steve Henson]
1298
Dr. Stephen Henson4654ef91999-10-09 02:54:10 +00001299 *) New X509V3_{X509,CRL,REVOKED}_get_d2i() functions. These will search
1300 for, obtain and decode and extension and obtain its critical flag.
1301 This allows all the necessary extension code to be handled in a
1302 single function call.
1303 [Steve Henson]
1304
Andy Polyakov7e102e21999-10-07 12:10:26 +00001305 *) RC4 tune-up featuring 30-40% performance improvement on most RISC
1306 platforms. See crypto/rc4/rc4_enc.c for further details.
1307 [Andy Polyakov]
1308
Dr. Stephen Hensond71c6bc1999-10-05 13:10:21 +00001309 *) New -noout option to asn1parse. This causes no output to be produced
1310 its main use is when combined with -strparse and -out to extract data
1311 from a file (which may not be in ASN.1 format).
1312 [Steve Henson]
1313
Dr. Stephen Henson2d681b71999-10-05 12:57:50 +00001314 *) Fix for pkcs12 program. It was hashing an invalid certificate pointer
1315 when producing the local key id.
1316 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1317
Dr. Stephen Henson3908cdf1999-10-04 23:56:06 +00001318 *) New option -dhparam in s_server. This allows a DH parameter file to be
1319 stated explicitly. If it is not stated then it tries the first server
1320 certificate file. The previous behaviour hard coded the filename
1321 "server.pem".
1322 [Steve Henson]
1323
Dr. Stephen Henson3ea23631999-10-04 21:17:47 +00001324 *) Add -pubin and -pubout options to the rsa and dsa commands. These allow
1325 a public key to be input or output. For example:
1326 openssl rsa -in key.pem -pubout -out pubkey.pem
1327 Also added necessary DSA public key functions to handle this.
1328 [Steve Henson]
1329
Dr. Stephen Henson393f2c61999-10-04 12:08:59 +00001330 *) Fix so PKCS7_dataVerify() doesn't crash if no certificates are contained
1331 in the message. This was handled by allowing
1332 X509_find_by_issuer_and_serial() to tolerate a NULL passed to it.
1333 [Steve Henson, reported by Sampo Kellomaki <sampo@mail.neuronio.pt>]
1334
1335 *) Fix for bug in d2i_ASN1_bytes(): other ASN1 functions add an extra null
1336 to the end of the strings whereas this didn't. This would cause problems
1337 if strings read with d2i_ASN1_bytes() were later modified.
1338 [Steve Henson, reported by Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
1339
Dr. Stephen Henson4579dd51999-10-02 13:33:06 +00001340 *) Fix for base64 decode bug. When a base64 bio reads only one line of
1341 data and it contains EOF it will end up returning an error. This is
1342 caused by input 46 bytes long. The cause is due to the way base64
1343 BIOs find the start of base64 encoded data. They do this by trying a
1344 trial decode on each line until they find one that works. When they
1345 do a flag is set and it starts again knowing it can pass all the
1346 data directly through the decoder. Unfortunately it doesn't reset
1347 the context it uses. This means that if EOF is reached an attempt
1348 is made to pass two EOFs through the context and this causes the
1349 resulting error. This can also cause other problems as well. As is
1350 usual with these problems it takes *ages* to find and the fix is
1351 trivial: move one line.
1352 [Steve Henson, reported by ian@uns.ns.ac.yu (Ivan Nejgebauer) ]
1353
Dr. Stephen Henson06f45361999-09-20 22:09:17 +00001354 *) Ugly workaround to get s_client and s_server working under Windows. The
1355 old code wouldn't work because it needed to select() on sockets and the
1356 tty (for keypresses and to see if data could be written). Win32 only
1357 supports select() on sockets so we select() with a 1s timeout on the
1358 sockets and then see if any characters are waiting to be read, if none
1359 are present then we retry, we also assume we can always write data to
1360 the tty. This isn't nice because the code then blocks until we've
1361 received a complete line of data and it is effectively polling the
1362 keyboard at 1s intervals: however it's quite a bit better than not
1363 working at all :-) A dedicated Windows application might handle this
1364 with an event loop for example.
1365 [Steve Henson]
1366
Dr. Stephen Henson1c800191999-09-18 22:37:44 +00001367 *) Enhance RSA_METHOD structure. Now there are two extra methods, rsa_sign
1368 and rsa_verify. When the RSA_FLAGS_SIGN_VER option is set these functions
1369 will be called when RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() are used. This is useful
1370 if rsa_pub_dec() and rsa_priv_enc() equivalents are not available.
1371 For this to work properly RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt()
1372 should *not* be used: RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() must be used instead.
1373 This necessitated the support of an extra signature type NID_md5_sha1
1374 for SSL signatures and modifications to the SSL library to use it instead
1375 of calling RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt().
1376 [Steve Henson]
1377
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00001378 *) Add new -verify -CAfile and -CApath options to the crl program, these
1379 will lookup a CRL issuers certificate and verify the signature in a
1380 similar way to the verify program. Tidy up the crl program so it
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001381 no longer accesses structures directly. Make the ASN1 CRL parsing a bit
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00001382 less strict. It will now permit CRL extensions even if it is not
1383 a V2 CRL: this will allow it to tolerate some broken CRLs.
1384 [Steve Henson]
1385
Bodo Möller396f6311999-09-08 21:58:13 +00001386 *) Initialize all non-automatic variables each time one of the openssl
1387 sub-programs is started (this is necessary as they may be started
1388 multiple times from the "OpenSSL>" prompt).
1389 [Lennart Bang, Bodo Moeller]
1390
Dr. Stephen Henson4a61a641999-09-08 18:02:25 +00001391 *) Preliminary compilation option RSA_NULL which disables RSA crypto without
1392 removing all other RSA functionality (this is what NO_RSA does). This
1393 is so (for example) those in the US can disable those operations covered
1394 by the RSA patent while allowing storage and parsing of RSA keys and RSA
1395 key generation.
1396 [Steve Henson]
1397
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +00001398 *) Non-copying interface to BIO pairs.
Bodo Möller6f7af151999-09-10 14:03:21 +00001399 (still largely untested)
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +00001400 [Bodo Moeller]
1401
Dr. Stephen Hensona785abc1999-09-07 12:16:29 +00001402 *) New function ANS1_tag2str() to convert an ASN1 tag to a descriptive
1403 ASCII string. This was handled independently in various places before.
1404 [Steve Henson]
1405
Dr. Stephen Hensonaef838f1999-09-04 17:19:55 +00001406 *) New functions UTF8_getc() and UTF8_putc() that parse and generate
1407 UTF8 strings a character at a time.
1408 [Steve Henson]
1409
Bodo Möller074309b1999-09-03 16:33:11 +00001410 *) Use client_version from client hello to select the protocol
1411 (s23_srvr.c) and for RSA client key exchange verification
1412 (s3_srvr.c), as required by the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 specifications.
1413 [Bodo Moeller]
1414
Dr. Stephen Henson8ce97161999-09-03 01:08:34 +00001415 *) Add various utility functions to handle SPKACs, these were previously
1416 handled by poking round in the structure internals. Added new function
1417 NETSCAPE_SPKI_print() to print out SPKAC and a new utility 'spkac' to
1418 print, verify and generate SPKACs. Based on an original idea from
1419 Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@comune.modena.it> but extensively modified.
1420 [Steve Henson]
1421
Andy Polyakov2d4287d1999-08-28 13:18:25 +00001422 *) RIPEMD160 is operational on all platforms and is back in 'make test'.
1423 [Andy Polyakov]
1424
Dr. Stephen Henson87a25f91999-08-27 00:08:17 +00001425 *) Allow the config file extension section to be overwritten on the
1426 command line. Based on an original idea from Massimiliano Pala
1427 <madwolf@comune.modena.it>. The new option is called -extensions
1428 and can be applied to ca, req and x509. Also -reqexts to override
1429 the request extensions in req and -crlexts to override the crl extensions
1430 in ca.
1431 [Steve Henson]
1432
Dr. Stephen Hensonf9150e51999-08-25 23:18:23 +00001433 *) Add new feature to the SPKAC handling in ca. Now you can include
1434 the same field multiple times by preceding it by "XXXX." for example:
1435 1.OU="Unit name 1"
1436 2.OU="Unit name 2"
1437 this is the same syntax as used in the req config file.
1438 [Steve Henson]
1439
Dr. Stephen Hensonc79b16e1999-08-25 16:59:26 +00001440 *) Allow certificate extensions to be added to certificate requests. These
1441 are specified in a 'req_extensions' option of the req section of the
1442 config file. They can be printed out with the -text option to req but
1443 are otherwise ignored at present.
1444 [Steve Henson]
1445
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00001446 *) Fix a horrible bug in enc_read() in crypto/evp/bio_enc.c: if the first
Bodo Möller0f7e6fe1999-09-24 20:24:24 +00001447 data read consists of only the final block it would not decrypted because
Dr. Stephen Henson7b65c321999-08-24 13:21:35 +00001448 EVP_CipherUpdate() would correctly report zero bytes had been decrypted.
1449 A misplaced 'break' also meant the decrypted final block might not be
1450 copied until the next read.
1451 [Steve Henson]
1452
Dr. Stephen Henson13066ce1999-08-23 23:11:32 +00001453 *) Initial support for DH_METHOD. Again based on RSA_METHOD. Also added
1454 a few extra parameters to the DH structure: these will be useful if
1455 for example we want the value of 'q' or implement X9.42 DH.
1456 [Steve Henson]
1457
Dr. Stephen Hensonc0711f71999-08-22 17:57:38 +00001458 *) Initial support for DSA_METHOD. This is based on the RSA_METHOD and
1459 provides hooks that allow the default DSA functions or functions on a
1460 "per key" basis to be replaced. This allows hardware acceleration and
1461 hardware key storage to be handled without major modification to the
1462 library. Also added low level modexp hooks and CRYPTO_EX structure and
1463 associated functions.
1464 [Steve Henson]
1465
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +00001466 *) Add a new flag to memory BIOs, BIO_FLAG_MEM_RDONLY. This marks the BIO
1467 as "read only": it can't be written to and the buffer it points to will
1468 not be freed. Reading from a read only BIO is much more efficient than
1469 a normal memory BIO. This was added because there are several times when
1470 an area of memory needs to be read from a BIO. The previous method was
1471 to create a memory BIO and write the data to it, this results in two
1472 copies of the data and an O(n^2) reading algorithm. There is a new
1473 function BIO_new_mem_buf() which creates a read only memory BIO from
1474 an area of memory. Also modified the PKCS#7 routines to use read only
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001475 memory BIOs.
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +00001476 [Steve Henson]
1477
Bodo Möllerde1915e1999-08-18 17:14:42 +00001478 *) Bugfix: ssl23_get_client_hello did not work properly when called in
1479 state SSL23_ST_SR_CLNT_HELLO_B, i.e. when the first 7 bytes of
1480 a SSLv2-compatible client hello for SSLv3 or TLSv1 could be read,
1481 but a retry condition occured while trying to read the rest.
1482 [Bodo Moeller]
1483
Dr. Stephen Hensonc6c34501999-08-17 12:58:01 +00001484 *) The PKCS7_ENC_CONTENT_new() function was setting the content type as
1485 NID_pkcs7_encrypted by default: this was wrong since this should almost
1486 always be NID_pkcs7_data. Also modified the PKCS7_set_type() to handle
1487 the encrypted data type: this is a more sensible place to put it and it
1488 allows the PKCS#12 code to be tidied up that duplicated this
1489 functionality.
1490 [Steve Henson]
1491
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00001492 *) Changed obj_dat.pl script so it takes its input and output files on
1493 the command line. This should avoid shell escape redirection problems
1494 under Win32.
1495 [Steve Henson]
1496
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +00001497 *) Initial support for certificate extension requests, these are included
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00001498 in things like Xenroll certificate requests. Included functions to allow
1499 extensions to be obtained and added.
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +00001500 [Steve Henson]
1501
Bodo Möller1b1a6e71999-08-09 13:01:48 +00001502 *) -crlf option to s_client and s_server for sending newlines as
1503 CRLF (as required by many protocols).
1504 [Bodo Moeller]
1505
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +00001506 Changes between 0.9.3a and 0.9.4 [09 Aug 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +00001507
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +00001508 *) Install libRSAglue.a when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +00001509 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00001510
Ralf S. Engelschall96395151999-08-08 10:15:43 +00001511 *) A few more ``#ifndef NO_FP_API / #endif'' pairs for consistency.
1512 [Andrija Antonijevic <TheAntony2@bigfoot.com>]
1513
Dr. Stephen Hensoned7f60f1999-08-06 21:47:09 +00001514 *) Fix -startdate and -enddate (which was missing) arguments to 'ca'
1515 program.
1516 [Steve Henson]
1517
Bodo Möller48c843c1999-08-05 11:50:18 +00001518 *) New function DSA_dup_DH, which duplicates DSA parameters/keys as
1519 DH parameters/keys (q is lost during that conversion, but the resulting
1520 DH parameters contain its length).
1521
1522 For 1024-bit p, DSA_generate_parameters followed by DSA_dup_DH is
1523 much faster than DH_generate_parameters (which creates parameters
1524 where p = 2*q + 1), and also the smaller q makes DH computations
1525 much more efficient (160-bit exponentiation instead of 1024-bit
1526 exponentiation); so this provides a convenient way to support DHE
1527 ciphersuites in SSL/TLS servers (see ssl/ssltest.c). It is of
1528 utter importance to use
1529 SSL_CTX_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
1530 or
1531 SSL_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
1532 when such DH parameters are used, because otherwise small subgroup
1533 attacks may become possible!
1534 [Bodo Moeller]
1535
1536 *) Avoid memory leak in i2d_DHparams.
1537 [Bodo Moeller]
1538
Dr. Stephen Henson922180d1999-07-30 01:12:46 +00001539 *) Allow the -k option to be used more than once in the enc program:
1540 this allows the same encrypted message to be read by multiple recipients.
1541 [Steve Henson]
1542
Dr. Stephen Henson3e3d2ea1999-07-27 22:22:58 +00001543 *) New function OBJ_obj2txt(buf, buf_len, a, no_name), this converts
1544 an ASN1_OBJECT to a text string. If the "no_name" parameter is set then
1545 it will always use the numerical form of the OID, even if it has a short
1546 or long name.
1547 [Steve Henson]
1548
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00001549 *) Added an extra RSA flag: RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY. Previously the rsa_mod_exp
1550 method only got called if p,q,dmp1,dmq1,iqmp components were present,
1551 otherwise bn_mod_exp was called. In the case of hardware keys for example
1552 no private key components need be present and it might store extra data
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00001553 in the RSA structure, which cannot be accessed from bn_mod_exp.
1554 By setting RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY rsa_mod_exp will always be called for
1555 private key operations.
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00001556 [Steve Henson]
1557
Andy Polyakova0618e31999-07-25 15:13:49 +00001558 *) Added support for SPARC Linux.
1559 [Andy Polyakov]
1560
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00001561 *) pem_password_cb function type incompatibly changed from
1562 typedef int pem_password_cb(char *buf, int size, int rwflag);
1563 to
1564 ....(char *buf, int size, int rwflag, void *userdata);
1565 so that applications can pass data to their callbacks:
1566 The PEM[_ASN1]_{read,write}... functions and macros now take an
1567 additional void * argument, which is just handed through whenever
1568 the password callback is called.
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00001569 [Damien Miller <dmiller@ilogic.com.au>; tiny changes by Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00001570
1571 New function SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata.
1572
1573 Compatibility note: As many C implementations push function arguments
1574 onto the stack in reverse order, the new library version is likely to
1575 interoperate with programs that have been compiled with the old
1576 pem_password_cb definition (PEM_whatever takes some data that
1577 happens to be on the stack as its last argument, and the callback
1578 just ignores this garbage); but there is no guarantee whatsoever that
1579 this will work.
Bodo Möller0cceb1c1999-05-30 23:54:52 +00001580
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +00001581 *) The -DPLATFORM="\"$(PLATFORM)\"" definition and the similar -DCFLAGS=...
1582 (both in crypto/Makefile.ssl for use by crypto/cversion.c) caused
1583 problems not only on Windows, but also on some Unix platforms.
Bodo Möller2e0fc871999-07-27 09:10:36 +00001584 To avoid problematic command lines, these definitions are now in an
Bodo Möller57119941999-07-29 12:57:23 +00001585 auto-generated file crypto/buildinf.h (created by crypto/Makefile.ssl
1586 for standard "make" builds, by util/mk1mf.pl for "mk1mf" builds).
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +00001587 [Bodo Moeller]
1588
Andy Polyakov73634551999-07-20 15:50:20 +00001589 *) MIPS III/IV assembler module is reimplemented.
1590 [Andy Polyakov]
1591
Ulf Möller64344501999-07-16 00:50:45 +00001592 *) More DES library cleanups: remove references to srand/rand and
1593 delete an unused file.
1594 [Ulf Möller]
1595
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +00001596 *) Add support for the the free Netwide assembler (NASM) under Win32,
1597 since not many people have MASM (ml) and it can be hard to obtain.
1598 This is currently experimental but it seems to work OK and pass all
1599 the tests. Check out INSTALL.W32 for info.
1600 [Steve Henson]
1601
Bodo Möller50596581999-07-12 17:15:42 +00001602 *) Fix memory leaks in s3_clnt.c: All non-anonymous SSL3/TLS1 connections
1603 without temporary keys kept an extra copy of the server key,
1604 and connections with temporary keys did not free everything in case
1605 of an error.
1606 [Bodo Moeller]
1607
Bodo Möller03cd4941999-07-11 22:00:55 +00001608 *) New function RSA_check_key and new openssl rsa option -check
1609 for verifying the consistency of RSA keys.
1610 [Ulf Moeller, Bodo Moeller]
1611
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +00001612 *) Various changes to make Win32 compile work:
1613 1. Casts to avoid "loss of data" warnings in p5_crpt2.c
1614 2. Change unsigned int to int in b_dump.c to avoid "signed/unsigned
1615 comparison" warnings.
1616 3. Add sk_<TYPE>_sort to DEF file generator and do make update.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +00001617 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +00001618
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5139391999-07-11 12:40:46 +00001619 *) Add a debugging option to PKCS#5 v2 key generation function: when
1620 you #define DEBUG_PKCS5V2 passwords, salts, iteration counts and
1621 derived keys are printed to stderr.
1622 [Steve Henson]
1623
Dr. Stephen Henson0ab8beb1999-07-11 12:30:55 +00001624 *) Copy the flags in ASN1_STRING_dup().
1625 [Roman E. Pavlov <pre@mo.msk.ru>]
1626
Dr. Stephen Hensonf7daafa1999-07-11 01:48:21 +00001627 *) The x509 application mishandled signing requests containing DSA
1628 keys when the signing key was also DSA and the parameters didn't match.
1629
1630 It was supposed to omit the parameters when they matched the signing key:
1631 the verifying software was then supposed to automatically use the CA's
1632 parameters if they were absent from the end user certificate.
1633
1634 Omitting parameters is no longer recommended. The test was also
1635 the wrong way round! This was probably due to unusual behaviour in
1636 EVP_cmp_parameters() which returns 1 if the parameters match.
1637 This meant that parameters were omitted when they *didn't* match and
1638 the certificate was useless. Certificates signed with 'ca' didn't have
1639 this bug.
1640 [Steve Henson, reported by Doug Erickson <Doug.Erickson@Part.NET>]
1641
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00001642 *) Memory leak checking (-DCRYPTO_MDEBUG) had some problems.
1643 The interface is as follows:
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00001644 Applications can use
1645 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ON) aka MemCheck_start(),
1646 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_OFF) aka MemCheck_stop();
1647 "off" is now the default.
1648 The library internally uses
1649 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_DISABLE) aka MemCheck_off(),
1650 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ENABLE) aka MemCheck_on()
1651 to disable memory-checking temporarily.
1652
1653 Some inconsistent states that previously were possible (and were
1654 even the default) are now avoided.
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00001655
1656 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_TIME is new and additionally stores the current time
1657 with each memory chunk allocated; this is occasionally more helpful
1658 than just having a counter.
Bodo Möllere3911161999-07-19 10:36:10 +00001659
1660 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_THREAD is also new and adds the thread ID.
1661
1662 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_ALL enables all of the above, plus any future
1663 extensions.
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00001664 [Bodo Moeller]
1665
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00001666 *) Introduce "mode" for SSL structures (with defaults in SSL_CTX),
1667 which largely parallels "options", but is for changing API behaviour,
1668 whereas "options" are about protocol behaviour.
Bodo Möller9c962481999-07-19 12:59:12 +00001669 Initial "mode" flags are:
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00001670
1671 SSL_MODE_ENABLE_PARTIAL_WRITE Allow SSL_write to report success when
1672 a single record has been written.
1673 SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER Don't insist that SSL_write
1674 retries use the same buffer location.
1675 (But all of the contents must be
1676 copied!)
1677 [Bodo Moeller]
1678
1679 *) Bugfix: SSL_set_mode ignored its parameter, only SSL_CTX_set_mode
1680 worked.
1681
Ulf Möller5271ebd1999-06-30 00:42:56 +00001682 *) Fix problems with no-hmac etc.
1683 [Ulf Möller, pointed out by Brian Wellington <bwelling@tislabs.com>]
1684
Dr. Stephen Hensonce8b2571999-06-29 22:22:42 +00001685 *) New functions RSA_get_default_method(), RSA_set_method() and
1686 RSA_get_method(). These allows replacement of RSA_METHODs without having
1687 to mess around with the internals of an RSA structure.
1688 [Steve Henson]
1689
Bodo Möller9c729e01999-06-25 14:04:10 +00001690 *) Fix memory leaks in DSA_do_sign and DSA_is_prime.
1691 Also really enable memory leak checks in openssl.c and in some
1692 test programs.
1693 [Chad C. Mulligan, Bodo Moeller]
1694
Dr. Stephen Henson034292a1999-06-24 01:50:27 +00001695 *) Fix a bug in d2i_ASN1_INTEGER() and i2d_ASN1_INTEGER() which can mess
1696 up the length of negative integers. This has now been simplified to just
1697 store the length when it is first determined and use it later, rather
1698 than trying to keep track of where data is copied and updating it to
1699 point to the end.
1700 [Steve Henson, reported by Brien Wheeler
1701 <bwheeler@authentica-security.com>]
1702
Dr. Stephen Henson170afce1999-06-22 13:33:22 +00001703 *) Add a new function PKCS7_signatureVerify. This allows the verification
1704 of a PKCS#7 signature but with the signing certificate passed to the
1705 function itself. This contrasts with PKCS7_dataVerify which assumes the
1706 certificate is present in the PKCS#7 structure. This isn't always the
1707 case: certificates can be omitted from a PKCS#7 structure and be
1708 distributed by "out of band" means (such as a certificate database).
1709 [Steve Henson]
1710
Dr. Stephen Hensondbd665c1999-06-22 01:38:31 +00001711 *) Complete the PEM_* macros with DECLARE_PEM versions to replace the
1712 function prototypes in pem.h, also change util/mkdef.pl to add the
1713 necessary function names.
1714 [Steve Henson]
1715
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00001716 *) mk1mf.pl (used by Windows builds) did not properly read the
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00001717 options set by Configure in the top level Makefile, and Configure
Bodo Möller975d3dc1999-07-09 13:02:14 +00001718 was not even able to write more than one option correctly.
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00001719 Fixed, now "no-idea no-rc5 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG" etc. works as intended.
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00001720 [Bodo Moeller]
1721
Dr. Stephen Henson8623f691999-06-20 17:36:11 +00001722 *) New functions CONF_load_bio() and CONF_load_fp() to allow a config
1723 file to be loaded from a BIO or FILE pointer. The BIO version will
1724 for example allow memory BIOs to contain config info.
1725 [Steve Henson]
1726
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00001727 *) New function "CRYPTO_num_locks" that returns CRYPTO_NUM_LOCKS.
1728 Whoever hopes to achieve shared-library compatibility across versions
1729 must use this, not the compile-time macro.
Bodo Möller11af1a21999-06-18 18:22:38 +00001730 (Exercise 0.9.4: Which is the minimum library version required by
1731 such programs?)
1732 Note: All this applies only to multi-threaded programs, others don't
1733 need locks.
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00001734 [Bodo Moeller]
1735
Bodo Möller95d29591999-06-12 01:03:40 +00001736 *) Add missing case to s3_clnt.c state machine -- one of the new SSL tests
1737 through a BIO pair triggered the default case, i.e.
1738 SSLerr(...,SSL_R_UNKNOWN_STATE).
1739 [Bodo Moeller]
1740
1741 *) New "BIO pair" concept (crypto/bio/bss_bio.c) so that applications
1742 can use the SSL library even if none of the specific BIOs is
1743 appropriate.
1744 [Bodo Moeller]
1745
Dr. Stephen Henson9bce3071999-06-11 22:30:45 +00001746 *) Fix a bug in i2d_DSAPublicKey() which meant it returned the wrong value
1747 for the encoded length.
1748 [Jeon KyoungHo <khjeon@sds.samsung.co.kr>]
1749
Dr. Stephen Henson565d1061999-06-11 01:58:42 +00001750 *) Add initial documentation of the X509V3 functions.
1751 [Steve Henson]
1752
Dr. Stephen Hensonb7d135b1999-06-10 17:32:52 +00001753 *) Add a new pair of functions PEM_write_PKCS8PrivateKey() and
1754 PEM_write_bio_PKCS8PrivateKey() that are equivalent to
1755 PEM_write_PrivateKey() and PEM_write_bio_PrivateKey() but use the more
1756 secure PKCS#8 private key format with a high iteration count.
1757 [Steve Henson]
1758
Ralf S. Engelschall9d9b5591999-06-10 08:13:52 +00001759 *) Fix determination of Perl interpreter: A perl or perl5
1760 _directory_ in $PATH was also accepted as the interpreter.
1761 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1762
Dr. Stephen Henson5f6d0ea1999-06-09 23:33:48 +00001763 *) Fix demos/sign/sign.c: well there wasn't anything strictly speaking
1764 wrong with it but it was very old and did things like calling
1765 PEM_ASN1_read() directly and used MD5 for the hash not to mention some
1766 unusual formatting.
1767 [Steve Henson]
1768
Dr. Stephen Hensonf62676b1999-06-09 18:05:30 +00001769 *) Fix demos/selfsign.c: it used obsolete and deleted functions, changed
1770 to use the new extension code.
1771 [Steve Henson]
1772
1773 *) Implement the PEM_read/PEM_write functions in crypto/pem/pem_all.c
1774 with macros. This should make it easier to change their form, add extra
1775 arguments etc. Fix a few PEM prototypes which didn't have cipher as a
1776 constant.
1777 [Steve Henson]
1778
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00001779 *) Add to configuration table a new entry that can specify an alternative
1780 name for unistd.h (for pre-POSIX systems); we need this for NeXTstep,
1781 according to Mark Crispin <MRC@Panda.COM>.
1782 [Bodo Moeller]
1783
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +00001784#if 0
Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00001785 *) DES CBC did not update the IV. Weird.

Bodo Möllera7bd0391999-06-09 18:01:49 +00001788 des_cbc_encrypt does not update the IV, but des_ncbc_encrypt does.
1789 Changing the behaviour of the former might break existing programs --
1790 where IV updating is needed, des_ncbc_encrypt can be used.
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +00001791#endif
Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00001792
Ben Laurie233bf731999-06-09 10:19:53 +00001793 *) When bntest is run from "make test" it drives bc to check its
1794 calculations, as well as internally checking them. If an internal check
1795 fails, it needs to cause bc to give a non-zero result or make test carries
1796 on without noticing the failure. Fixed.
1797 [Ben Laurie]
1798
Ulf Möller908eb7b1999-06-08 16:35:11 +00001799 *) DES library cleanups.
1800 [Ulf Möller]
1801
Dr. Stephen Henson8eb57af1999-06-08 00:09:51 +00001802 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 PBE algorithms. This will permit PKCS#8 to be
1803 used with any cipher unlike PKCS#5 v1.5 which can at most handle 64 bit
1804 ciphers. NOTE: although the key derivation function has been verified
1805 against some published test vectors it has not been extensively tested
1806 yet. Added a -v2 "cipher" option to pkcs8 application to allow the use
1807 of v2.0.
1808 [Steve Henson]
1809
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00001810 *) Instead of "mkdir -p", which is not fully portable, use new
1811 Perl script "util/mkdir-p.pl".
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00001812 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00001813
Dr. Stephen Henson69cbf461999-06-06 13:07:13 +00001814 *) Rewrite the way password based encryption (PBE) is handled. It used to
1815 assume that the ASN1 AlgorithmIdentifier parameter was a PBEParameter
1816 structure. This was true for the PKCS#5 v1.5 and PKCS#12 PBE algorithms
1817 but doesn't apply to PKCS#5 v2.0 where it can be something else. Now
1818 the 'parameter' field of the AlgorithmIdentifier is passed to the
1819 underlying key generation function so it must do its own ASN1 parsing.
1820 This has also changed the EVP_PBE_CipherInit() function which now has a
1821 'parameter' argument instead of literal salt and iteration count values
1822 and the function EVP_PBE_ALGOR_CipherInit() has been deleted.
1823 [Steve Henson]
1824
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00001825 *) Support for PKCS#5 v1.5 compatible password based encryption algorithms
Dr. Stephen Hensone7871ff1999-06-05 12:39:10 +00001826 and PKCS#8 functionality. New 'pkcs8' application linked to openssl.
1827 Needed to change the PEM_STRING_EVP_PKEY value which was just "PRIVATE
1828 KEY" because this clashed with PKCS#8 unencrypted string. Since this
1829 value was just used as a "magic string" and not used directly its
1830 value doesn't matter.
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00001831 [Steve Henson]
1832
Ben Laurie84c15db1999-06-04 22:23:10 +00001833 *) Introduce some semblance of const correctness to BN. Shame C doesn't
1834 support mutable.
1835 [Ben Laurie]
1836
Bodo Möller272c9331999-06-07 00:26:20 +00001837 *) "linux-sparc64" configuration (ultrapenguin).
Bodo Möller885982d1999-06-04 21:46:35 +00001838 [Ray Miller <ray.miller@oucs.ox.ac.uk>]

Ulf Möllera53955d1999-06-04 21:35:58 +00001842 *) config now generates no-xxx options for missing ciphers.
1843 [Ulf Möller]
1844
1845 *) Support the EBCDIC character set (work in progress).
1846 File ebcdic.c not yet included because it has a different license.
1847 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
1848
1849 *) Support BS2000/OSD-POSIX.
1850 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
1851
Ben Laurieb4f76581999-06-03 18:04:04 +00001852 *) Make callbacks for key generation use void * instead of char *.
1853 [Ben Laurie]
1854
Ben Laurie213a75d1999-06-03 16:07:37 +00001855 *) Make S/MIME samples compile (not yet tested).
1856 [Ben Laurie]
1857
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00001858 *) Additional typesafe stacks.
1859 [Ben Laurie]
1860
Bodo Möller885982d1999-06-04 21:46:35 +00001861 *) New configuration variants "bsdi-elf-gcc" (BSD/OS 4.x).

1868
Bodo Möller71f08091999-05-27 23:52:31 +00001869 *) Updated some demos.
Bodo Möller054009a1999-05-27 23:59:58 +00001870 [Sean O Riordain, Wade Scholine]
Bodo Möller71f08091999-05-27 23:52:31 +00001871
Bodo Möllere95f6261999-05-27 20:55:18 +00001872 *) Add missing BIO_free at exit of pkcs12 application.
1873 [Wu Zhigang]
1874
1875 *) Fix memory leak in conf.c.
1876 [Steve Henson]
1877
Bodo Möller472bde41999-05-27 20:49:27 +00001878 *) Updates for Win32 to assembler version of MD5.
1879 [Steve Henson]
1880
1881 *) Set #! path to perl in apps/der_chop to where we found it
1882 instead of using a fixed path.
1883 [Bodo Moeller]
1884
1885 *) SHA library changes for irix64-mips4-cc.
1886 [Andy Polyakov]
1887
1888 *) Improvements for VMS support.

Bodo Möller557068c1999-05-24 22:38:23 +00001892 Changes between 0.9.2b and 0.9.3 [24 May 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00001893
Ulf Möllere14d4441999-05-20 01:43:07 +00001894 *) Bignum library bug fix. IRIX 6 passes "make test" now!
1895 This also avoids the problems with SC4.2 and unpatched SC5.
1896 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1897
Dr. Stephen Hensone84240d1999-05-19 12:45:16 +00001898 *) New functions sk_num, sk_value and sk_set to replace the previous macros.
1899 These are required because of the typesafe stack would otherwise break
1900 existing code. If old code used a structure member which used to be STACK
1901 and is now STACK_OF (for example cert in a PKCS7_SIGNED structure) with
1902 sk_num or sk_value it would produce an error because the num, data members
1903 are not present in STACK_OF. Now it just produces a warning. sk_set
1904 replaces the old method of assigning a value to sk_value
1905 (e.g. sk_value(x, i) = y) which the library used in a few cases. Any code
1906 that does this will no longer work (and should use sk_set instead) but
1907 this could be regarded as a "questionable" behaviour anyway.
1908 [Steve Henson]
1909
Dr. Stephen Henson1b266da1999-05-16 17:32:32 +00001910 *) Fix most of the other PKCS#7 bugs. The "experimental" code can now
1911 correctly handle encrypted S/MIME data.
1912 [Steve Henson]
1913
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00001914 *) Change type of various DES function arguments from des_cblock
Bodo Möllerf43c8141999-05-16 14:20:17 +00001915 (which means, in function argument declarations, pointer to char)
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00001916 to des_cblock * (meaning pointer to array with 8 char elements),
1917 which allows the compiler to do more typechecking; it was like
1918 that back in SSLeay, but with lots of ugly casts.
1919
1920 Introduce new type const_des_cblock.
1921 [Bodo Moeller]
1922
Dr. Stephen Henson84fa7041999-05-16 00:25:36 +00001923 *) Reorganise the PKCS#7 library and get rid of some of the more obvious
1924 problems: find RecipientInfo structure that matches recipient certificate
1925 and initialise the ASN1 structures properly based on passed cipher.
1926 [Steve Henson]
1927
Ben Laurie62bad771999-05-15 15:59:28 +00001928 *) Belatedly make the BN tests actually check the results.
1929 [Ben Laurie]
1930
Dr. Stephen Henson1ad2ecb1999-05-14 18:21:21 +00001931 *) Fix the encoding and decoding of negative ASN1 INTEGERS and conversion
1932 to and from BNs: it was completely broken. New compilation option
1933 NEG_PUBKEY_BUG to allow for some broken certificates that encode public
1934 key elements as negative integers.
1935 [Steve Henson]
1936
Ulf Möllerbd3576d1999-05-13 13:16:42 +00001937 *) Reorganize and speed up MD5.
1938 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
1939
Ulf Möller7d7d2cb1999-05-13 11:37:32 +00001940 *) VMS support.
1941 [Richard Levitte <richard@levitte.org>]
1942
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5eac851999-05-12 01:56:27 +00001943 *) New option -out to asn1parse to allow the parsed structure to be
1944 output to a file. This is most useful when combined with the -strparse
1945 option to examine the output of things like OCTET STRINGS.
1946 [Steve Henson]
1947
Bodo Möllerb31b04d1999-05-11 07:43:16 +00001948 *) Make SSL library a little more fool-proof by not requiring any longer
1949 that SSL_set_{accept,connect}_state be called before
1950 SSL_{accept,connect} may be used (SSL_set_..._state is omitted
1951 in many applications because usually everything *appeared* to work as
1952 intended anyway -- now it really works as intended).
1953 [Bodo Moeller]
1954
Ulf Möllerd5a2ea41999-05-10 23:59:28 +00001955 *) Move openssl.cnf out of lib/.
1956 [Ulf Möller]
1957
Ralf S. Engelschall397f7031999-05-10 08:33:56 +00001958 *) Fix various things to let OpenSSL even pass ``egcc -pipe -O2 -Wall
1959 -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wmissing-prototypes
1960 -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Winline'' with EGCS 1.1.2+
1961 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
1962
Dr. Stephen Henson884e8ec1999-05-10 00:47:42 +00001963 *) Various fixes to the EVP and PKCS#7 code. It may now be able to
1964 handle PKCS#7 enveloped data properly.
1965 [Sebastian Akerman <sak@parallelconsulting.com>, modified by Steve]
1966
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00001967 *) Create a duplicate of the SSL_CTX's CERT in SSL_new instead of
1968 copying pointers. The cert_st handling is changed by this in
1969 various ways (and thus what used to be known as ctx->default_cert
1970 is now called ctx->cert, since we don't resort to s->ctx->[default_]cert
1971 any longer when s->cert does not give us what we need).
1972 ssl_cert_instantiate becomes obsolete by this change.
1973 As soon as we've got the new code right (possibly it already is?),
1974 we have solved a couple of bugs of the earlier code where s->cert
1975 was used as if it could not have been shared with other SSL structures.
1976
1977 Note that using the SSL API in certain dirty ways now will result
1978 in different behaviour than observed with earlier library versions:
1979 Changing settings for an SSL_CTX *ctx after having done s = SSL_new(ctx)
1980 does not influence s as it used to.
1981
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00001982 In order to clean up things more thoroughly, inside SSL_SESSION
Bodo Möllerb56bce41999-05-13 15:09:38 +00001983 we don't use CERT any longer, but a new structure SESS_CERT
1984 that holds per-session data (if available); currently, this is
1985 the peer's certificate chain and, for clients, the server's certificate
1986 and temporary key. CERT holds only those values that can have
1987 meaningful defaults in an SSL_CTX.
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00001988 [Bodo Moeller]
1989
Dr. Stephen Hensonc8b41851999-05-09 16:39:11 +00001990 *) New function X509V3_EXT_i2d() to create an X509_EXTENSION structure
1991 from the internal representation. Various PKCS#7 fixes: remove some
1992 evil casts and set the enc_dig_alg field properly based on the signing
1993 key type.
1994 [Steve Henson]
1995
Dr. Stephen Hensone40b7ab1999-05-08 12:59:50 +00001996 *) Allow PKCS#12 password to be set from the command line or the
1997 environment. Let 'ca' get its config file name from the environment
1998 variables "OPENSSL_CONF" or "SSLEAY_CONF" (for consistency with 'req'
1999 and 'x509').
2000 [Steve Henson]
2001
2002 *) Allow certificate policies extension to use an IA5STRING for the
2003 organization field. This is contrary to the PKIX definition but
2004 VeriSign uses it and IE5 only recognises this form. Document 'x509'
2005 extension option.
2006 [Steve Henson]
2007
Ben Laurie5b640021999-05-07 15:42:23 +00002008 *) Add PEDANTIC compiler flag to allow compilation with gcc -pedantic,
2009 without disallowing inline assembler and the like for non-pedantic builds.
2010 [Ben Laurie]
2011
Ulf Möller31a674d1999-05-06 00:46:34 +00002012 *) Support Borland C++ builder.
2013 [Janez Jere <jj@void.si>, modified by Ulf Möller]
2014
2015 *) Support Mingw32.
2016 [Ulf Möller]
2017
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002018 *) SHA-1 cleanups and performance enhancements.
2019 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2020
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002021 *) Sparc v8plus assembler for the bignum library.
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002022 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002023
Ulf Möllerafd1f9e1999-05-04 11:52:26 +00002024 *) Accept any -xxx and +xxx compiler options in Configure.
2025 [Ulf Möller]
2026
2027 *) Update HPUX configuration.
2028 [Anonymous]
2029
Ralf S. Engelschalldee75ec1999-05-04 10:15:02 +00002030 *) Add missing sk_<type>_unshift() function to safestack.h
2031 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2032
Bodo Möllerb3ca6451999-05-01 17:43:52 +00002033 *) New function SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file that sets the
2034 "extra_cert"s in addition to the certificate. (This makes sense
2035 only for "PEM" format files, as chains as a whole are not
2036 DER-encoded.)
2037 [Bodo Moeller]
2038
Bodo Möller7f897141999-05-01 03:20:40 +00002039 *) Support verify_depth from the SSL API.
2040 x509_vfy.c had what can be considered an off-by-one-error:
2041 Its depth (which was not part of the external interface)
2042 was actually counting the number of certificates in a chain;
2043 now it really counts the depth.
2044 [Bodo Moeller]
2045
Bodo Möllerdc1f6071999-05-01 20:16:35 +00002046 *) Bugfix in crypto/x509/x509_cmp.c: The SSLerr macro was used
2047 instead of X509err, which often resulted in confusing error
2048 messages since the error codes are not globally unique
2049 (e.g. an alleged error in ssl3_accept when a certificate
2050 didn't match the private key).
2051
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002052 *) New function SSL_CTX_set_session_id_context that allows to set a default
Bodo Möllerdd1462f1999-05-01 00:07:42 +00002053 value (so that you don't need SSL_set_session_id_context for each
2054 connection using the SSL_CTX).
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002055 [Bodo Moeller]
2056
Ulf Möllerc6652741999-04-29 21:56:13 +00002057 *) OAEP decoding bug fix.
2058 [Ulf Möller]
2059
Bodo Möllere5f30451999-04-29 21:52:08 +00002060 *) Support INSTALL_PREFIX for package builders, as proposed by
2061 David Harris.
2062 [Bodo Moeller]
2063
Bodo Möller87bc2c01999-04-29 16:10:41 +00002064 *) New Configure options "threads" and "no-threads". For systems
2065 where the proper compiler options are known (currently Solaris
2066 and Linux), "threads" is the default.
2067 [Bodo Moeller]
2068
Bodo Möller6e6acfd1999-04-28 22:33:54 +00002069 *) New script util/mklink.pl as a faster substitute for util/mklink.sh.
2070 [Bodo Moeller]
2071
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002072 *) Install various scripts to $(OPENSSLDIR)/misc, not to
2073 $(INSTALLTOP)/bin -- they shouldn't clutter directories
2074 such as /usr/local/bin.
2075 [Bodo Moeller]
2076
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002077 *) "make linux-shared" to build shared libraries.
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002078 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002079
Ulf Möllerf5d7a031999-04-27 01:14:46 +00002080 *) New Configure option no-<cipher> (rsa, idea, rc5, ...).
2081 [Ulf Möller]
2082
Dr. Stephen Hensonb64f8251999-04-27 00:36:20 +00002083 *) Add the PKCS#12 API documentation to openssl.txt. Preliminary support for
2084 extension adding in x509 utility.
2085 [Steve Henson]
2086
Ulf Möllera9be3af1999-04-26 16:43:10 +00002087 *) Remove NOPROTO sections and error code comments.
2088 [Ulf Möller]
2089
Dr. Stephen Henson47339f61999-04-26 00:23:10 +00002090 *) Partial rewrite of the DEF file generator to now parse the ANSI
2091 prototypes.
2092 [Steve Henson]
2093
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002094 *) New Configure options --prefix=DIR and --openssldir=DIR.
Ulf Möller9c4711c1999-04-24 23:39:52 +00002095 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002096
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002097 *) Complete rewrite of the error code script(s). It is all now handled
2098 by one script at the top level which handles error code gathering,
2099 header rewriting and C source file generation. It should be much better
2100 than the old method: it now uses a modified version of Ulf's parser to
2101 read the ANSI prototypes in all header files (thus the old K&R definitions
2102 aren't needed for error creation any more) and do a better job of
2103 translating function codes into names. The old 'ASN1 error code imbedded
2104 in a comment' is no longer necessary and it doesn't use .err files which
Dr. Stephen Henson6e781e81999-04-24 13:28:57 +00002105 have now been deleted. Also the error code call doesn't have to appear all
2106 on one line (which resulted in some large lines...).
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002107 [Steve Henson]
2108
Bodo Möller018b4ee1999-04-23 22:38:22 +00002109 *) Change #include filenames from <foo.h> to <openssl/foo.h>.
Bodo Möller92df9601999-04-23 22:20:21 +00002110 [Bodo Moeller]
2111
Bodo Möller85f48f71999-04-22 14:28:38 +00002112 *) Change behaviour of ssl2_read when facing length-0 packets: Don't return
2113 0 (which usually indicates a closed connection), but continue reading.
2114 [Bodo Moeller]
2115
Bodo Möller90b8bbb1999-04-22 13:38:03 +00002116 *) Fix some race conditions.
2117 [Bodo Moeller]
2118
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002119 *) Add support for CRL distribution points extension. Add Certificate
2120 Policies and CRL distribution points documentation.
2121 [Steve Henson]
2122
Ulf Möller8e10f2b1999-04-21 17:31:05 +00002123 *) Move the autogenerated header file parts to crypto/opensslconf.h.
2124 [Ulf Möller]
2125
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002126 *) Fix new 56-bit DES export ciphersuites: they were using 7 bytes instead of
2127 8 of keying material. Merlin has also confirmed interop with this fix
2128 between OpenSSL and Baltimore C/SSL 2.0 and J/SSL 2.0.
2129 [Merlin Hughes <merlin@baltimore.ie>]
2130
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002131 *) Fix lots of warnings.
2132 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2133
2134 *) In add_cert_dir() in crypto/x509/by_dir.c, break out of the loop if
2135 the directory spec didn't end with a LIST_SEPARATOR_CHAR.
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002136 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002137
Ulf Möller8fb04b91999-04-20 16:23:03 +00002138 *) Fix problems with sizeof(long) == 8.
2139 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2140
Ulf Möller6b691a51999-04-19 21:31:43 +00002141 *) Change functions to ANSI C.
2142 [Ulf Möller]
2143
Ulf Möllerdf82f5c1999-04-19 14:45:02 +00002144 *) Fix typos in error codes.
2145 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>, Ulf Möller]
2146
Ulf Möller22a4f961999-04-19 13:54:11 +00002147 *) Remove defunct assembler files from Configure.
2148 [Ulf Möller]
2149
Ulf Möller5e85b6a1999-04-19 13:41:45 +00002150 *) SPARC v8 assembler BIGNUM implementation.
2151 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2152
Dr. Stephen Henson3edd7ed1999-04-19 17:55:11 +00002153 *) Support for Certificate Policies extension: both print and set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002154 Various additions to support the r2i method this uses.
Dr. Stephen Henson41b731f1999-04-18 23:21:03 +00002155 [Steve Henson]
2156
Ben Lauriee7788021999-04-17 21:25:43 +00002157 *) A lot of constification, and fix a bug in X509_NAME_oneline() that could
2158 return a const string when you are expecting an allocated buffer.
2159 [Ben Laurie]
2160
Dr. Stephen Hensonc83e5231999-04-17 23:55:39 +00002161 *) Add support for ASN1 types UTF8String and VISIBLESTRING, also the CHOICE
2162 types DirectoryString and DisplayText.
Dr. Stephen Hensond77b3051999-04-17 15:53:32 +00002163 [Steve Henson]
2164
Dr. Stephen Henson1d48dd01999-04-16 23:57:04 +00002165 *) Add code to allow r2i extensions to access the configuration database,
2166 add an LHASH database driver and add several ctx helper functions.
2167 [Steve Henson]
2168
Dr. Stephen Henson953937b1999-04-15 23:07:00 +00002169 *) Fix an evil bug in bn_expand2() which caused various BN functions to
2170 fail when they extended the size of a BIGNUM.
2171 [Steve Henson]
2172
Dr. Stephen Henson28a98801999-04-14 23:44:41 +00002173 *) Various utility functions to handle SXNet extension. Modify mkdef.pl to
2174 support typesafe stack.
2175 [Steve Henson]
2176
Ben Laurie8f7de4f1999-04-14 11:13:47 +00002177 *) Fix typo in SSL_[gs]et_options().
2178 [Nils Frostberg <nils@medcom.se>]
2179
Dr. Stephen Henson0490a861999-04-13 23:56:39 +00002180 *) Delete various functions and files that belonged to the (now obsolete)
2181 old X509V3 handling code.
2182 [Steve Henson]
2183
Ulf Möller5fbe91d1999-04-13 00:58:49 +00002184 *) New Configure option "rsaref".
2185 [Ulf Möller]
2186
Bodo Möller5fd4e2b1999-04-12 19:58:17 +00002187 *) Don't auto-generate pem.h.
2188 [Bodo Moeller]

2191 [Ben Laurie]
2192
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002193 *) Convert various additional casted stacks to type-safe STACK_OF() variants.
Ben Laurie135a1dc1999-05-07 09:18:25 +00002194 [Ben Laurie, Ralf S. Engelschall, Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002195
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00002196 *) Introduce type-safe STACKs. This will almost certainly break lots of code
2197 that links with OpenSSL (well at least cause lots of warnings), but fear
2198 not: the conversion is trivial, and it eliminates loads of evil casts. A
2199 few STACKed things have been converted already. Feel free to convert more.
2200 In the fullness of time, I'll do away with the STACK type altogether.
2201 [Ben Laurie]
2202
Ralf S. Engelschallf9a25931999-04-12 11:45:14 +00002203 *) Add `openssl ca -revoke <certfile>' facility which revokes a certificate
2204 specified in <certfile> by updating the entry in the index.txt file.
2205 This way one no longer has to edit the index.txt file manually for
2206 revoking a certificate. The -revoke option does the gory details now.
2207 [Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@openca.org>, Ralf S. Engelschall]
2208
Ralf S. Engelschall2f0cd191999-04-12 10:36:16 +00002209 *) Fix `openssl crl -noout -text' combination where `-noout' killed the
2210 `-text' option at all and this way the `-noout -text' combination was
2211 inconsistent in `openssl crl' with the friends in `openssl x509|rsa|dsa'.
2212 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2213
Ralf S. Engelschall268c2101999-04-12 09:59:05 +00002214 *) Make sure a corresponding plain text error message exists for the
2215 X509_V_ERR_CERT_REVOKED/23 error number which can occur when a
2216 verify callback function determined that a certificate was revoked.
2217 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2218
Bodo Möllerfc8ee061999-04-11 02:49:35 +00002219 *) Bugfix: In test/testenc, don't test "openssl <cipher>" for
2220 ciphers that were excluded, e.g. by -DNO_IDEA. Also, test
2221 all available cipers including rc5, which was forgotten until now.
2222 In order to let the testing shell script know which algorithms
2223 are available, a new (up to now undocumented) command
2224 "openssl list-cipher-commands" is used.
2225 [Bodo Moeller]
2226
Bodo Möllerc7ac31e1999-04-09 20:54:25 +00002227 *) Bugfix: s_client occasionally would sleep in select() when
2228 it should have checked SSL_pending() first.
2229 [Bodo Moeller]
2230
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002231 *) New functions DSA_do_sign and DSA_do_verify to provide access to
2232 the raw DSA values prior to ASN.1 encoding.
2233 [Ulf Möller]
2234
2235 *) Tweaks to Configure
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002236 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002237
Dr. Stephen Hensond2e26dc1999-04-08 23:55:42 +00002238 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 ASN1 PBES2 structures. No other support,
2239 yet...
2240 [Steve Henson]
2241
Ulf Möller99aab161999-04-01 12:34:33 +00002242 *) New variables $(RANLIB) and $(PERL) in the Makefiles.
2243 [Ulf Möller]
2244
Ulf Möller2613c1f1999-03-31 12:38:27 +00002245 *) New config option to avoid instructions that are illegal on the 80386.
2246 The default code is faster, but requires at least a 486.
2247 [Ulf Möller]
2248
Bodo Möller6d02d8e1999-03-31 12:06:30 +00002249 *) Got rid of old SSL2_CLIENT_VERSION (inconsistently used) and
2250 SSL2_SERVER_VERSION (not used at all) macros, which are now the
2251 same as SSL2_VERSION anyway.
2252 [Bodo Moeller]
2253
2254 *) New "-showcerts" option for s_client.
2255 [Bodo Moeller]
2256
Dr. Stephen Hensonee0508d1999-03-29 17:50:26 +00002257 *) Still more PKCS#12 integration. Add pkcs12 application to openssl
2258 application. Various cleanups and fixes.
2259 [Steve Henson]
2260
Dr. Stephen Henson8d8c7261999-03-28 23:17:34 +00002261 *) More PKCS#12 integration. Add new pkcs12 directory with Makefile.ssl and
2262 modify error routines to work internally. Add error codes and PBE init
2263 to library startup routines.
2264 [Steve Henson]
2265
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00002266 *) Further PKCS#12 integration. Added password based encryption, PKCS#8 and
2267 packing functions to asn1 and evp. Changed function names and error
2268 codes along the way.
2269 [Steve Henson]
2270
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00002271 *) PKCS12 integration: and so it begins... First of several patches to
2272 slowly integrate PKCS#12 functionality into OpenSSL. Add PKCS#12
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00002273 objects to objects.h
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00002274 [Steve Henson]
2275
Dr. Stephen Henson785cdf21999-03-27 14:06:25 +00002276 *) Add a new 'indent' option to some X509V3 extension code. Initial ASN1
2277 and display support for Thawte strong extranet extension.
2278 [Steve Henson]
2279
Ben Laurieba423ad1999-03-27 13:03:37 +00002280 *) Add LinuxPPC support.
2281 [Jeff Dubrule <igor@pobox.org>]
2282
Ben Laurie67da3df1999-03-27 12:53:21 +00002283 *) Get rid of redundant BN file bn_mulw.c, and rename bn_div64 to
2284 bn_div_words in alpha.s.
2285 [Hannes Reinecke <H.Reinecke@hw.ac.uk> and Ben Laurie]
2286
Ralf S. Engelschall0e9fc711999-03-25 07:49:33 +00002287 *) Make sure the RSA OAEP test is skipped under -DRSAref because
2288 OAEP isn't supported when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
2289 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2290
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00002291 *) Move definitions of IS_SET/IS_SEQUENCE inside crypto/asn1/asn1.h
2292 so they no longer are missing under -DNOPROTO.
2293 [Soren S. Jorvang <soren@t.dk>]
2294
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00002295
2296 Changes between 0.9.1c and 0.9.2b [22 Mar 1999]
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00002297
Ben Laurieb4cadc61999-03-22 12:22:14 +00002298 *) Make SSL_get_peer_cert_chain() work in servers. Unfortunately, it still
2299 doesn't work when the session is reused. Coming soon!
2300 [Ben Laurie]
2301
2302 *) Fix a security hole, that allows sessions to be reused in the wrong
2303 context thus bypassing client cert protection! All software that uses
2304 client certs and session caches in multiple contexts NEEDS PATCHING to
2305 allow session reuse! A fuller solution is in the works.
2306 [Ben Laurie, problem pointed out by Holger Reif, Bodo Moeller (and ???)]
2307
Ralf S. Engelschallafb23061999-03-20 13:04:12 +00002308 *) Some more source tree cleanups (removed obsolete files
2309 crypto/bf/asm/bf586.pl, test/test.txt and crypto/sha/asm/f.s; changed
2310 permission on "config" script to be executable) and a fix for the INSTALL
2311 document.
2312 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2313
Dr. Stephen Henson199d59e1999-03-14 01:16:45 +00002314 *) Remove some legacy and erroneous uses of malloc, free instead of
2315 Malloc, Free.
2316 [Lennart Bang <lob@netstream.se>, with minor changes by Steve]
2317
Ben Laurieb4899bb1999-03-12 20:41:09 +00002318 *) Make rsa_oaep_test return non-zero on error.
2319 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2320
Ben Laurie29c0fcc1999-03-12 20:26:27 +00002321 *) Add support for native Solaris shared libraries. Configure
2322 solaris-sparc-sc4-pic, make, then run shlib/solaris-sc4.sh. It'd be nice
2323 if someone would make that last step automatic.
2324 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@AdNovum.CH>]
2325
Ben Lauriecadf1261999-03-12 19:58:43 +00002326 *) ctx_size was not built with the right compiler during "make links". Fixed.
2327 [Ben Laurie]
2328
Dr. Stephen Hensonbc420ac1999-03-12 01:43:28 +00002329 *) Change the meaning of 'ALL' in the cipher list. It now means "everything
2330 except NULL ciphers". This means the default cipher list will no longer
2331 enable NULL ciphers. They need to be specifically enabled e.g. with
2332 the string "DEFAULT:eNULL".
2333 [Steve Henson]
2334
Dr. Stephen Hensonabd4c911999-03-11 02:42:13 +00002335 *) Fix to RSA private encryption routines: if p < q then it would
2336 occasionally produce an invalid result. This will only happen with
2337 externally generated keys because OpenSSL (and SSLeay) ensure p > q.
2338 [Steve Henson]
2339
Ralf S. Engelschall7e37e721999-03-10 19:57:05 +00002340 *) Be less restrictive and allow also `perl util/perlpath.pl
2341 /path/to/bin/perl' in addition to `perl util/perlpath.pl /path/to/bin',
2342 because this way one can also use an interpreter named `perl5' (which is
2343 usually the name of Perl 5.xxx on platforms where an Perl 4.x is still
2344 installed as `perl').
2345 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2346
Ralf S. Engelschall637691e1999-03-10 19:51:43 +00002347 *) Let util/clean-depend.pl work also with older Perl 5.00x versions.
2348 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2349
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00002350 *) Fix Makefile.org so CC,CFLAG etc are passed to 'make links' add
2351 advapi32.lib to Win32 build and change the pem test comparision
2352 to fc.exe (thanks to Ulrich Kroener <kroneru@yahoo.com> for the
Dr. Stephen Henson38138021999-03-10 18:30:48 +00002353 suggestion). Fix misplaced ASNI prototypes and declarations in evp.h
2354 and crypto/des/ede_cbcm_enc.c.
2355 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00002356
Ben Laurieb241fef1999-03-09 11:37:23 +00002357 *) DES quad checksum was broken on big-endian architectures. Fixed.
2358 [Ben Laurie]
2359
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002360 *) Comment out two functions in bio.h that aren't implemented. Fix up the
2361 Win32 test batch file so it (might) work again. The Win32 test batch file
2362 is horrible: I feel ill....
2363 [Steve Henson]
2364
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00002365 *) Move various #ifdefs around so NO_SYSLOG, NO_DIRENT etc are now selected
2366 in e_os.h. Audit of header files to check ANSI and non ANSI
2367 sections: 10 functions were absent from non ANSI section and not exported
2368 from Windows DLLs. Fixed up libeay.num for new functions.

Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00002370
Ralf S. Engelschalld10f0521999-03-08 12:35:01 +00002371 *) Make `openssl version' output lines consistent.
2372 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2373
Ralf S. Engelschallc0e538e1999-03-08 11:41:26 +00002374 *) Fix Win32 symbol export lists for BIO functions: Added
2375 BIO_get_ex_new_index, BIO_get_ex_num, BIO_get_ex_data and BIO_set_ex_data
2376 to ms/libeay{16,32}.def.
2377 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2378
Ralf S. Engelschall84107e61999-03-08 11:25:49 +00002379 *) Second round of fixing the OpenSSL perl/ stuff. It now at least compiled
2380 fine under Unix and passes some trivial tests I've now added. But the
2381 whole stuff is horribly incomplete, so a README.1ST with a disclaimer was
2382 added to make sure no one expects that this stuff really works in the
2383 OpenSSL 0.9.2 release. Additionally I've started to clean the XS sources
2384 up and fixed a few little bugs and inconsistencies in OpenSSL.{pm,xs} and
2385 openssl_bio.xs.
2386 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2387
Ben Laurie26a08461999-03-07 15:08:38 +00002388 *) Fix the generation of two part addresses in perl.
2389 [Kenji Miyake <kenji@miyake.org>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
2390
Ben Laurie7d3ce7b1999-03-07 14:17:32 +00002391 *) Add config entry for Linux on MIPS.
2392 [John Tobey <jtobey@channel1.com>]
2393
Ben Laurieefadf601999-03-07 15:21:08 +00002394 *) Make links whenever Configure is run, unless we are on Windoze.

2396
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00002397 *) Permit extensions to be added to CRLs using crl_section in openssl.cnf.
2398 Currently only issuerAltName and AuthorityKeyIdentifier make any sense
2399 in CRLs.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002400 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00002401
Ralf S. Engelschall116e3151999-03-06 16:07:47 +00002402 *) Add a useful kludge to allow package maintainers to specify compiler and
2403 other platforms details on the command line without having to patch the
2404 Configure script everytime: One now can use ``perl Configure
2405 <id>:<details>'', i.e. platform ids are allowed to have details appended
2406 to them (seperated by colons). This is treated as there would be a static
2407 pre-configured entry in Configure's %table under key <id> with value
2408 <details> and ``perl Configure <id>'' is called. So, when you want to
2409 perform a quick test-compile under FreeBSD 3.1 with pgcc and without
2410 assembler stuff you can use ``perl Configure "FreeBSD-elf:pgcc:-O6:::"''
2411 now, which overrides the FreeBSD-elf entry on-the-fly.
2412 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2413
Ben Lauriebc348241999-03-06 15:21:02 +00002414 *) Disable new TLS1 ciphersuites by default: they aren't official yet.
2415 [Ben Laurie]
2416
Ralf S. Engelschall3eb0ed61999-03-06 14:35:03 +00002417 *) Allow DSO flags like -fpic, -fPIC, -KPIC etc. to be specified
2418 on the `perl Configure ...' command line. This way one can compile
2419 OpenSSL libraries with Position Independent Code (PIC) which is needed
2420 for linking it into DSOs.
2421 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2422
Ben Laurief415fa31999-03-06 14:09:36 +00002423 *) Remarkably, export ciphers were totally broken and no-one had noticed!
2424 Fixed.
2425 [Ben Laurie]
2426
Ralf S. Engelschall0b903ec1999-03-06 13:29:09 +00002427 *) Cleaned up the LICENSE document: The official contact for any license
2428 questions now is the OpenSSL core team under openssl-core@openssl.org.
2429 And add a paragraph about the dual-license situation to make sure people
2430 recognize that _BOTH_ the OpenSSL license _AND_ the SSLeay license apply
2431 to the OpenSSL toolkit.
2432 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2433
Ralf S. Engelschallbb8f3c51999-03-06 12:32:06 +00002434 *) General source tree makefile cleanups: Made `making xxx in yyy...'
2435 display consistent in the source tree and replaced `/bin/rm' by `rm'.
2436 Additonally cleaned up the `make links' target: Remove unnecessary
2437 semicolons, subsequent redundant removes, inline point.sh into mklink.sh
2438 to speed processing and no longer clutter the display with confusing
2439 stuff. Instead only the actually done links are displayed.
2440 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2441
Ben Laurie988788f1999-03-06 12:09:36 +00002442 *) Permit null encryption ciphersuites, used for authentication only. It used
2443 to be necessary to set the preprocessor define SSL_ALLOW_ENULL to do this.
2444 It is now necessary to set SSL_FORBID_ENULL to prevent the use of null
2445 encryption.
2446 [Ben Laurie]
2447
Dr. Stephen Henson924acc51999-03-05 02:05:15 +00002448 *) Add a bunch of fixes to the PKCS#7 stuff. It used to sometimes reorder
2449 signed attributes when verifying signatures (this would break them),
2450 the detached data encoding was wrong and public keys obtained using
2451 X509_get_pubkey() weren't freed.
2452 [Steve Henson]
2453
Dr. Stephen Hensond00b7aa1999-03-05 01:07:04 +00002454 *) Add text documentation for the BUFFER functions. Also added a work around
2455 to a Win95 console bug. This was triggered by the password read stuff: the
2456 last character typed gets carried over to the next fread(). If you were
2457 generating a new cert request using 'req' for example then the last
2458 character of the passphrase would be CR which would then enter the first
2459 field as blank.
Dr. Stephen Henson9985bed1999-03-04 23:29:51 +00002460 [Steve Henson]
2461
Ralf S. Engelschall789285a1999-03-04 12:55:42 +00002462 *) Added the new `Includes OpenSSL Cryptography Software' button as
2463 doc/openssl_button.{gif,html} which is similar in style to the old SSLeay
2464 button and can be used by applications based on OpenSSL to show the
2465 relationship to the OpenSSL project.
2466 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2467
Ralf S. Engelschalla06c6021999-03-04 07:54:01 +00002468 *) Remove confusing variables in function signatures in files
2469 ssl/ssl_lib.c and ssl/ssl.h.
2470 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
2471
Ralf S. Engelschall8d697db1999-03-04 07:47:27 +00002472 *) Don't install bss_file.c under PREFIX/include/
2473 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
2474
Dr. Stephen Henson06c68491999-03-03 02:01:26 +00002475 *) Get the Win32 compile working again. Modify mkdef.pl so it can handle
2476 functions that return function pointers and has support for NT specific
2477 stuff. Fix mk1mf.pl and VC-32.pl to support NT differences also. Various
2478 #ifdef WIN32 and WINNTs sprinkled about the place and some changes from
2479 unsigned to signed types: this was killing the Win32 compile.
2480 [Steve Henson]
2481
Ralf S. Engelschall72e442a1999-03-22 15:50:34 +00002482 *) Add new certificate file to stack functions,
2483 SSL_add_dir_cert_subjects_to_stack() and
2484 SSL_add_file_cert_subjects_to_stack(). These largely supplant
2485 SSL_load_client_CA_file(), and can be used to add multiple certs easily
2486 to a stack (usually this is then handed to SSL_CTX_set_client_CA_list()).
Ben Laurieeb90a481999-02-28 17:41:55 +00002487 This means that Apache-SSL and similar packages don't have to mess around
2488 to add as many CAs as they want to the preferred list.
2489 [Ben Laurie]
2490
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00002491 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
2492 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
2493 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
2494 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
2495 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +00002496
2497 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
2498 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00002499
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +00002500 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
2501 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
2502 [Steve Henson]
2503
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +00002504 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
2505 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
2506 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
2507 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
2508 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
2509 (e.g. s_server).
2510 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
2511 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
2512 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
2513 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
2514 no way to reconfigure them.
2515 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
2516 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
2517 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
2518 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
2519 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
2520 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2521
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +00002522 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
2523 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
2524 recognized by the users.
2525 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2526
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +00002527 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
2528 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
2529 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
2530 already masked variable.
2531 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2532
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +00002533 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
2534 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2535
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +00002536 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
2537 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
2538 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
2539 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2540
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +00002541 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
2542 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
2543 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2544
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +00002545 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
2546 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
2547 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
2548 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
2549 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
2550 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
2551 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
2552 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
2553 now, too.
2554 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2555
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +00002556 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
2557 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
2558 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
2559
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +00002560 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
2561 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
2562 config file.
2563 [Steve Henson]
2564
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +00002565 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
2566 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
2567
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +00002568 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
2569 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
2570 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
2571 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
2572 [Ben Laurie]
2573
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +00002574 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
2575 [Steve Henson]
2576
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +00002577 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
2578 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2579
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +00002580 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
2581 [Ben Laurie]
2582
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +00002583 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
2584 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
2585 [Steve Henson]
2586
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00002587 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
2588 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
2589 [Steve Henson]
2590
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +00002591 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
2592 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
2593 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
2594 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
2595 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
2596 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
2597 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
2598 Ben Laurie]
2599
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +00002600 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
2601 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
2602
2603 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
2604 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
2605 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
2606 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
2607 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
2608
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00002609 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
2610 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00002611 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00002612 [Steve Henson]
2613
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00002614 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
2615 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for
2616 an example.
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00002617 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00002618
Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +00002619 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
2620 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
2621 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
2622
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +00002623 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
2624 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
2625 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
2626 build instructions.
2627 [Steve Henson]
2628
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +00002629 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
2630 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
2631 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
2632 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
2633 [Steve Henson]
2634
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +00002635 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
2636 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
2637 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
2638 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
2639 [Ben Laurie]
2640
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00002641 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
2642 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
2643 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
2644 so it wasn't spotted.
2645 [Steve Henson, reported by Erwann ABALEA <eabalea@certplus.com>]

Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +00002647 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
2648 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
2649 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
2650 vectors if you have them.
2651 [Ben Laurie]
2652
Ralf S. Engelschall2c6ccde1999-03-06 14:01:29 +00002653 *) Correct calculation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +00002654 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
2655 [Ben Laurie]
2656
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00002657 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
2658 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
2659 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
2660 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
2661 If you do a:
2662 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
2663 it will update them.
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00002664 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00002665
Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +00002666 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
2667 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
2668 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
2669 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
2670 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
2671 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
2672 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
2673 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2674
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +00002675 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
2676 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
2677 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
2678 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
2679 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
2680 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
2681 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
2682 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
2683 the crypto/md/ stuff).
2684 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2685
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +00002686 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
2687 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
2688 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
2689 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
2690 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
2691 [Steve Henson]
2692
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +00002693 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the
2694 INTEGER code.
2695 [Steve Henson]
2696
Mark J. Cox351d8991999-01-31 12:14:39 +00002697 *) Add new function, EVP_MD_CTX_copy() to replace frequent use of memcpy.
2698 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
2699
Ralf S. Engelschallb621d771999-01-31 11:10:10 +00002700 *) Make sure `make rehash' target really finds the `openssl' program.
2701 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2702
Ben Lauriea96e7811999-01-30 17:53:00 +00002703 *) Squeeze another 7% of speed out of MD5 assembler, at least on a P2. I'd
2704 like to hear about it if this slows down other processors.
2705 [Ben Laurie]
2706
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +00002707 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.
2708 [Alan Batie <batie@aahz.jf.intel.com>]
2709
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00002710 *) Fixed ms/32all.bat script: `no_asm' -> `no-asm'
2711 [Rainer W. Gerling <gerling@mpg-gv.mpg.de>]
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00002712
2713 *) New program nseq to manipulate netscape certificate sequences
2714 [Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +00002715
Dr. Stephen Henson9fe84291999-01-29 01:53:55 +00002716 *) Modify crl2pkcs7 so it supports multiple -certfile arguments. Fix a
2717 few typos.
2718 [Steve Henson]
2719
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +00002720 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION
2721 but the BN code had some problems that would cause failures when
2722 doing certificate verification and some other functions.
2723 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
2724
Dr. Stephen Henson92c046c1999-01-28 00:16:44 +00002725 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
2726 [Steve Henson]
2727
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00002728 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
2729 [Steve Henson]
2730
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +00002731 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
2732 [Steve Henson]
2733
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +00002734 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
2735 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
2736 [Steve Henson]
2737
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00002738 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
2739 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
2740 CA extensions.
2741 [Steve Henson]
2742
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00002743 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the
2744 error code, add initial support to X509_print() and x509 application.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00002745 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00002746
Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +00002747 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
2748 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
2749 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
2750 [Steve Henson]
2751
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00002752 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
2753 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
2754 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
2755 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
2756 properly to be processed.
2757 [Steve Henson]
2758
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +00002759 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
2760 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
2761 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
2762 [Ben Laurie]
2763
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +00002764 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.
2765 [Ben Laurie, reported by Jeremy Hylton <jeremy@cnri.reston.va.us>]
2766
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00002767 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
2768 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
2769 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
2770 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
2771 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
2772 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
2773 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
2774 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
2775 or delete all the .err files.
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00002776 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00002777
Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +00002778 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
2779 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
2780 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
2781 to regenerate it if needed.
2782 [Ben Laurie, reported (with fix for C version) by Jun-ichiro itojun
2783 Hagino <itojun@kame.net>]
2784
2785 *) File was opened incorrectly in randfile.c.
2786 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2787
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +00002788 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
2789 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
2790 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
2791 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
2792 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
2793 [Steve Henson]
2794
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +00002795 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.
2796 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2797
Ben Laurie512d2221999-01-17 14:14:41 +00002798 *) Remove pointless MD5 hash when using DSA keys in ca.
2799 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2800
Ben Laurie2c1ef381999-01-17 14:10:08 +00002801 *) Generate an error if given an empty string as a cert directory. Also
2802 generate an error if handed NULL (previously returned 0 to indicate an
2803 error, but didn't set one).
2804 [Ben Laurie, reported by Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2805
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +00002806 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
2807 [Ben Laurie]
2808
Dr. Stephen Hensonee13f9b1999-01-14 18:25:07 +00002809 *) Fix the dummy function BN_ref_mod_exp() in rsaref.c to have the correct
2810 parameters. This was causing a warning which killed off the Win32 compile.
2811 [Steve Henson]
2812
Dr. Stephen Henson27eb6221999-01-14 18:21:57 +00002813 *) Remove C++ style comments from crypto/bn/bn_local.h.
2814 [Neil Costigan <neil.costigan@celocom.com>]
2815
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +00002816 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
2817 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
2818 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
2819 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
2820 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
2821 OID is not part of the table.
2822 [Steve Henson]
2823
Ben Lauriea6801a91999-01-10 20:36:02 +00002824 *) Add prototypes to X509 lookup/verify methods, fixing a bug in
2825 X509_LOOKUP_by_alias().
2826 [Ben Laurie]
2827
Ben Laurie50acf461999-01-09 19:15:59 +00002828 *) Sort openssl functions by name.
2829 [Ben Laurie]
2830
Dr. Stephen Henson7f9b7b01999-01-09 17:29:34 +00002831 *) Get the gendsa program working (hopefully) and add it to app list. Remove
2832 encryption from sample DSA keys (in case anyone is interested the password
2833 was "1234").
2834 [Steve Henson]
2835
Ben Lauriee03ddfa1999-01-07 19:15:59 +00002836 *) Make _all_ *_free functions accept a NULL pointer.
2837 [Frans Heymans <fheymans@isaserver.be>]
2838
Ben Laurie6fa89f91999-01-07 00:37:01 +00002839 *) If a DH key is generated in s3_srvr.c, don't blow it by trying to use
2840 NULL pointers.
2841 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2842
Ben Lauriec13d4791999-01-07 00:16:37 +00002843 *) s_server should send the CAfile as acceptable CAs, not its own cert.
2844 [Bodo Moeller <3moeller@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
2845
Ben Lauriebc4deee1999-01-07 00:10:32 +00002846 *) Don't blow it for numeric -newkey arguments to apps/req.
2847 [Bodo Moeller <3moeller@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
2848
Ben Laurie5b001151999-01-06 23:18:08 +00002849 *) Temp key "for export" tests were wrong in s3_srvr.c.
2850 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
2851
Ben Laurief8c3c051999-01-06 22:53:34 +00002852 *) Add prototype for temp key callback functions
2853 SSL_CTX_set_tmp_{rsa,dh}_callback().
2854 [Ben Laurie]
2855
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00002856 *) Make DH_free() tolerate being passed a NULL pointer (like RSA_free() and
2857 DSA_free()). Make X509_PUBKEY_set() check for errors in d2i_PublicKey().
Dr. Stephen Henson384c4791999-01-06 01:41:21 +00002858 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00002859
Ben Lauriee416ad91999-01-04 21:43:32 +00002860 *) X509_name_add_entry() freed the wrong thing after an error.
2861 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
2862
Ben Laurie4a18cdd1999-01-04 21:39:34 +00002863 *) rsa_eay.c would attempt to free a NULL context.
2864 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
2865
Ben Lauriebb65e201999-01-04 20:11:31 +00002866 *) BIO_s_socket() had a broken should_retry() on Windoze.
2867 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
2868
Ben Laurieb5e406f1999-01-04 19:55:12 +00002869 *) BIO_f_buffer() didn't pass on BIO_CTRL_FLUSH.
2870 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
2871
Ralf S. Engelschallcb0f35d1999-01-03 15:31:11 +00002872 *) Make sure the already existing X509_STORE->depth variable is initialized
2873 in X509_STORE_new(), but document the fact that this variable is still
2874 unused in the certificate verification process.
2875 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2876
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcf6451999-01-03 01:08:33 +00002877 *) Fix the various library and apps files to free up pkeys obtained from
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00002878 X509_PUBKEY_get() et al. Also allow x509.c to handle netscape extensions.
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcf6451999-01-03 01:08:33 +00002879 [Steve Henson]
2880
Ben Lauriecdbb8c21999-01-02 19:04:27 +00002881 *) Fix reference counting in X509_PUBKEY_get(). This makes
2882 demos/maurice/example2.c work, amongst others, probably.
2883 [Steve Henson and Ben Laurie]
2884
Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00002885 *) First cut of a cleanup for apps/. First the `ssleay' program is now named
2886 `openssl' and second, the shortcut symlinks for the `openssl <command>'
2887 are no longer created. This way we have a single and consistent command
2888 line interface `openssl <command>', similar to `cvs <command>'.

Dr. Stephen Hensonc35f5491999-01-02 01:53:06 +00002891 *) ca.c: move test for DSA keys inside #ifndef NO_DSA. Make pubkey
2892 BIT STRING wrapper always have zero unused bits.
2893 [Steve Henson]
2894
Dr. Stephen Hensonebc828c1999-01-01 18:43:44 +00002895 *) Add CA.pl, perl version of CA.sh, add extended key usage OID.
2896 [Steve Henson]
2897
Paul C. Sutton79e259e1999-01-01 14:04:07 +00002898 *) Make the top-level INSTALL documentation easier to understand.
2899 [Paul Sutton]
2900
Paul C. Sutton56ee3111999-01-01 12:51:11 +00002901 *) Makefiles updated to exit if an error occurs in a sub-directory
2902 make (including if user presses ^C) [Paul Sutton]
2903
Ben Laurie6063b271998-12-31 17:11:46 +00002904 *) Make Montgomery context stuff explicit in RSA data structure.
2905 [Ben Laurie]
2906
2907 *) Fix build order of pem and err to allow for generated pem.h.
2908 [Ben Laurie]
2909
2910 *) Fix renumbering bug in X509_NAME_delete_entry().
2911 [Ben Laurie]
2912
stephen792a9001998-12-31 01:35:07 +00002913 *) Enhanced the err-ins.pl script so it makes the error library number
2914 global and can add a library name. This is needed for external ASN1 and
2915 other error libraries.
2916 [Steve Henson]
2917
2918 *) Fixed sk_insert which never worked properly.
2919 [Steve Henson]
2920
2921 *) Fix ASN1 macros so they can handle indefinite length construted
2922 EXPLICIT tags. Some non standard certificates use these: they can now
2923 be read in.
2924 [Steve Henson]
2925
Ralf S. Engelschallce72df11998-12-30 23:07:32 +00002926 *) Merged the various old/obsolete SSLeay documentation files (doc/xxx.doc)
2927 into a single doc/ssleay.txt bundle. This way the information is still
2928 preserved but no longer messes up this directory. Now it's new room for
2929 the new set of documenation files.
2930 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2931
Ben Laurie4098e891998-12-29 21:43:55 +00002932 *) SETs were incorrectly DER encoded. This was a major pain, because they
2933 shared code with SEQUENCEs, which aren't coded the same. This means that
2934 almost everything to do with SETs or SEQUENCEs has either changed name or
2935 number of arguments.
2936 [Ben Laurie, based on a partial fix by GP Jayan <gp@nsj.co.jp>]
2937
2938 *) Fix test data to work with the above.
2939 [Ben Laurie]
2940
Ben Laurie03f8b041998-12-29 17:22:31 +00002941 *) Fix the RSA header declarations that hid a bug I fixed in 0.9.0b but
2942 was already fixed by Eric for 0.9.1 it seems.
Ralf S. Engelschall88fce971998-12-30 23:09:13 +00002943 [Ben Laurie - pointed out by Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]

Ben Laurie5dcdcd41998-12-28 17:14:28 +00002945 *) Autodetect FreeBSD3.
2946 [Ben Laurie]
2947
Ben Laurie1641cb61998-12-28 17:08:48 +00002948 *) Fix various bugs in Configure. This affects the following platforms:
2949 nextstep
2950 ncr-scde
2951 unixware-2.0
2952 unixware-2.0-pentium
2953 sco5-cc.

Ben Laurie8d7ed6f1998-12-28 21:58:19 +00002956 *) Eliminate generated files from CVS. Reorder tests to regenerate files
2957 before they are needed.
2958 [Ben Laurie]
2959
2960 *) Generate Makefile.ssl from Makefile.org (to keep CVS happy).
2961 [Ben Laurie]
2962
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00002963
2964 Changes between 0.9.1b and 0.9.1c [23-Dec-1998]
