4
Richard Levittec5e85802000-09-24 17:31:37 +00005 Changes between 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 [xx XXX 2000]
6
Richard Levittedcea8e12000-11-01 00:05:04 +00007 *) Add support for shared libraries under Irix.
8 [Albert Chin-A-Young <china@thewrittenword.com>]
9
Richard Levitte501ebf12000-10-31 23:26:32 +000010 *) Improve RPM specification file by forcing symbolic linking and making
11 sure the installed documentation is also owned by root.root.
12 [Damien Miller <djm@mindrot.org>]
13
Richard Levitte815c83f2000-10-31 23:14:19 +000014 *) Add configuration option to build on Linux on both big-endian and
15 little-endian MIPS.
16 [Ralf Baechle <ralf@uni-koblenz.de>]
17
Richard Levitte3aba98e2000-10-28 22:44:03 +000018 *) Give the OpenSSL applications more possibilities to make use of
19 keys (public as well as private) handled by engines.
20 [Richard Levitte]
21
Richard Levitte7c155332000-10-27 11:22:17 +000022 *) Add OCSP code that comes from CertCo.
23 [Richard Levitte]
24
Ulf Möller34a14882000-10-26 22:24:49 +000025 *) Add VMS support for the Rijndael code.
Richard Levitte5270e702000-10-26 21:07:28 +000026 [Richard Levitte]
27
28 *) Added untested support for Nuron crypto accelerator.
29 [Ben Laurie]
30
31 *) Add support for external cryptographic devices. This code was
32 previously distributed separately as the "engine" branch.
33 [Geoff Thorpe, Richard Levitte]
34
Geoff Thorpe1df586b2000-10-26 20:02:33 +000035 *) Rework the filename-translation in the DSO code. It is now possible to
36 have far greater control over how a "name" is turned into a filename
37 depending on the operating environment and any oddities about the
38 different shared library filenames on each system.
39 [Geoff Thorpe]
40
Richard Levitte53400da2000-10-21 22:53:32 +000041 *) Support threads on FreeBSD-elf in Configure.
42 [Richard Levitte]
43
Richard Levitte0fd44e22000-10-21 21:24:11 +000044 *) Add the possibility to create shared libraries on HP-UX
45 [Richard Levitte]
46
Dr. Stephen Henson627ec352000-10-20 00:36:45 +000047 *) Fix for SHA1 assembly problem with MASM: it produces
48 warnings about corrupt line number information when assembling
49 with debugging information. This is caused by the overlapping
50 of two sections.
51 [Bernd Matthes <mainbug@celocom.de>, Steve Henson]
52
Richard Levitte567f17c2000-10-21 20:01:34 +000053 *) NCONF changes.
54 NCONF_get_number() has no error checking at all. As a replacement,
55 NCONF_get_number_e() is defined (_e for "error checking") and is
56 promoted strongly. The old NCONF_get_number is kept around for
57 binary backward compatibility.
58 Make it possible for methods to load from something other than a BIO,
59 by providing a function pointer that is given a name instead of a BIO.
60 For example, this could be used to load configuration data from an
61 LDAP server.
62 [Richard Levitte]
63
Dr. Stephen Henson71d525c2000-10-14 23:51:52 +000064 *) Fix typo in get_cert_by_subject() in by_dir.c
65 [Jean-Marc Desperrier <jean-marc.desperrier@certplus.com>]
66
Richard Levittea22fb392000-10-13 15:25:06 +000067 *) Rework the system to generate shared libraries:
68
69 - Make note of the expected extension for the shared libraries and
70 if there is a need for symbolic links from for example libcrypto.so.0
71 to libcrypto.so.0.9.7. There is extended info in Configure for
72 that.
73
74 - Make as few rebuilds of the shared libraries as possible.
75
76 - Still avoid linking the OpenSSL programs with the shared libraries.
77
78 - When installing, install the shared libraries separately from the
79 static ones.
80 [Richard Levitte]
81
Dr. Stephen Henson924046c2000-10-12 01:50:33 +000082 *) Fix for non blocking accept BIOs. Added new I/O special reason
83 BIO_RR_ACCEPT to cover this case. Previously use of accept BIOs
84 with non blocking I/O was not possible because no retry code was
85 implemented. Also added new SSL code SSL_WANT_ACCEPT to cover
86 this case.
87 [Steve Henson]
88
Richard Levitte3ab56512000-10-14 20:09:54 +000089 *) Added the beginnings of Rijndael support.
90 [Ben Laurie]
91
Dr. Stephen Hensond0c98582000-10-04 01:16:32 +000092 *) Fix for bug in DirectoryString mask setting. Add support for
Dr. Stephen Henson8ca533e2000-10-06 11:51:47 +000093 X509_NAME_print_ex() in 'req' and X509_print_ex() function
94 to allow certificate printing to more controllable, additional
95 'certopt' option to 'x509' to allow new printing options to be
96 set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond0c98582000-10-04 01:16:32 +000097 [Steve Henson]
98
Richard Levitteef71cb62000-10-01 21:46:43 +000099 *) Clean old EAY MD5 hack from e_os.h.
100 [Richard Levitte]
101
Bodo Möller3a0afe12000-09-26 11:39:37 +0000102 *) Fix SSL_CTX_set_read_ahead macro to actually use its argument.
103
104 Copy SSL_CTX's read_ahead flag to SSL object directly in SSL_new
105 and not in SSL_clear because the latter is also used by the
106 accept/connect functions; previously, the settings made by
107 SSL_set_read_ahead would be lost during the handshake.
108 [Bodo Moeller; problems reported by Anders Gertz <gertz@epact.se>]
109
Richard Levitte88aeb642000-09-25 11:12:27 +0000110 *) Correct util/mkdef.pl to be selective about disabled algorithms.
111 Previously, it would create entries for disableed algorithms no
112 matter what.
113 [Richard Levitte]
Richard Levittec5e85802000-09-24 17:31:37 +0000114
Richard Levitte0e8f2fd2000-09-24 15:21:30 +0000115 Changes between 0.9.5a and 0.9.6 [24 Sep 2000]
Richard Levittec90341a2000-04-01 11:24:27 +0000116
Bodo Möllerf1192b72000-09-22 21:39:33 +0000117 *) In ssl23_get_client_hello, generate an error message when faced
118 with an initial SSL 3.0/TLS record that is too small to contain the
119 first two bytes of the ClientHello message, i.e. client_version.
120 (Note that this is a pathologic case that probably has never happened
121 in real life.) The previous approach was to use the version number
Bodo Möller5a5accd2000-09-22 21:45:49 +0000122 from the record header as a substitute; but our protocol choice
Bodo Möllerf1192b72000-09-22 21:39:33 +0000123 should not depend on that one because it is not authenticated
124 by the Finished messages.
125 [Bodo Moeller]
126
Ulf Möllerd49da3a2000-09-23 05:17:40 +0000127 *) More robust randomness gathering functions for Windows.
128 [Jeffrey Altman <jaltman@columbia.edu>]
129
Dr. Stephen Hensondbba8902000-09-22 21:32:08 +0000130 *) For compatibility reasons if the flag X509_V_FLAG_ISSUER_CHECK is
131 not set then we don't setup the error code for issuer check errors
132 to avoid possibly overwriting other errors which the callback does
133 handle. If an application does set the flag then we assume it knows
134 what it is doing and can handle the new informational codes
135 appropriately.
136 [Steve Henson]
137
Dr. Stephen Henson6cffb202000-09-21 18:57:00 +0000138 *) Fix for a nasty bug in ASN1_TYPE handling. ASN1_TYPE is used for
139 a general "ANY" type, as such it should be able to decode anything
140 including tagged types. However it didn't check the class so it would
141 wrongly interpret tagged types in the same way as their universal
142 counterpart and unknown types were just rejected. Changed so that the
143 tagged and unknown types are handled in the same way as a SEQUENCE:
144 that is the encoding is stored intact. There is also a new type
145 "V_ASN1_OTHER" which is used when the class is not universal, in this
146 case we have no idea what the actual type is so we just lump them all
147 together.
148 [Steve Henson]
149
Richard Levitte645749e2000-09-20 13:55:50 +0000150 *) On VMS, stdout may very well lead to a file that is written to
151 in a record-oriented fashion. That means that every write() will
152 write a separate record, which will be read separately by the
153 programs trying to read from it. This can be very confusing.
154
155 The solution is to put a BIO filter in the way that will buffer
156 text until a linefeed is reached, and then write everything a
157 line at a time, so every record written will be an actual line,
158 not chunks of lines and not (usually doesn't happen, but I've
159 seen it once) several lines in one record. BIO_f_linebuffer() is
160 the answer.
161
162 Currently, it's a VMS-only method, because that's where it has
163 been tested well enough.
164 [Richard Levitte]
165
Bodo Möllerfe035192000-09-19 23:25:00 +0000166 *) Remove 'optimized' squaring variant in BN_mod_mul_montgomery,
Bodo Möllera45bd292000-09-19 18:02:15 +0000167 it can return incorrect results.
Bodo Möllercb1fbf82000-09-19 23:06:14 +0000168 (Note: The buggy variant was not enabled in OpenSSL 0.9.5a,
169 but it was in 0.9.6-beta[12].)
Bodo Möllera45bd292000-09-19 18:02:15 +0000170 [Bodo Moeller]
171
Dr. Stephen Henson730e37e2000-09-18 12:30:57 +0000172 *) Disable the check for content being present when verifying detached
173 signatures in pk7_smime.c. Some versions of Netscape (wrongly)
174 include zero length content when signing messages.
175 [Steve Henson]
176
Bodo Möller07fcf422000-09-17 01:23:53 +0000177 *) New BIO_shutdown_wr macro, which invokes the BIO_C_SHUTDOWN_WR
178 BIO_ctrl (for BIO pairs).
Ulf Möllerd49da3a2000-09-23 05:17:40 +0000179 [Bodo Möller]
Bodo Möller07fcf422000-09-17 01:23:53 +0000180
Richard Levitte0e05f542000-09-15 21:22:50 +0000181 *) Add DSO method for VMS.
182 [Richard Levitte]
183
Ulf Möller1d84fd62000-09-14 18:37:53 +0000184 *) Bug fix: Montgomery multiplication could produce results with the
185 wrong sign.
186 [Ulf Möller]
187
Richard Levitte775bceb2000-09-14 15:28:44 +0000188 *) Add RPM specification openssl.spec and modify it to build three
189 packages. The default package contains applications, application
190 documentation and run-time libraries. The devel package contains
191 include files, static libraries and function documentation. The
192 doc package contains the contents of the doc directory. The original
193 openssl.spec was provided by Damien Miller <djm@mindrot.org>.
194 [Richard Levitte]
195
Richard Levittecc995262000-09-14 13:11:56 +0000196 *) Add a large number of documentation files for many SSL routines.
197 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE>]
198
Richard Levitte72660f52000-09-14 12:48:48 +0000199 *) Add a configuration entry for Sony News 4.
200 [NAKAJI Hiroyuki <nakaji@tutrp.tut.ac.jp>]
201
Ulf Möller5401c4c2000-09-13 01:48:05 +0000202 *) Don't set the two most significant bits to one when generating a
203 random number < q in the DSA library.
Ulf Möller523d7782000-09-13 02:01:35 +0000204 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möller5401c4c2000-09-13 01:48:05 +0000205
Bodo Möller54f10e62000-09-12 20:28:30 +0000206 *) New SSL API mode 'SSL_MODE_AUTO_RETRY'. This disables the default
207 behaviour that SSL_read may result in SSL_ERROR_WANT_READ (even if
208 the underlying transport is blocking) if a handshake took place.
209 (The default behaviour is needed by applications such as s_client
210 and s_server that use select() to determine when to use SSL_read;
211 but for applications that know in advance when to expect data, it
212 just makes things more complicated.)
213 [Bodo Moeller]
214
Ben Laurie2959f292000-09-11 17:58:09 +0000215 *) Add RAND_egd_bytes(), which gives control over the number of bytes read
216 from EGD.
217 [Ben Laurie]
218
Richard Levitte97d8e822000-09-10 14:45:19 +0000219 *) Add a few more EBCDIC conditionals that make `req' and `x509'
220 work better on such systems.
221 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
222
Dr. Stephen Henson84b65342000-09-07 23:14:26 +0000223 *) Add two demo programs for PKCS12_parse() and PKCS12_create().
224 Update PKCS12_parse() so it copies the friendlyName and the
225 keyid to the certificates aux info.
226 [Steve Henson]
227
Dr. Stephen Hensonf50c11c2000-09-07 17:42:25 +0000228 *) Fix bug in PKCS7_verify() which caused an infinite loop
229 if there was more than one signature.
230 [Sven Uszpelkat <su@celocom.de>]
231
Richard Levitte948d0122000-09-07 08:43:08 +0000232 *) Major change in util/mkdef.pl to include extra information
233 about each symbol, as well as presentig variables as well
234 as functions. This change means that there's n more need
235 to rebuild the .num files when some algorithms are excluded.
236 [Richard Levitte]
237
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000238 *) Allow the verify time to be set by an application,
239 rather than always using the current time.
240 [Steve Henson]
241
242 *) Phase 2 verify code reorganisation. The certificate
243 verify code now looks up an issuer certificate by a
244 number of criteria: subject name, authority key id
245 and key usage. It also verifies self signed certificates
246 by the same criteria. The main comparison function is
247 X509_check_issued() which performs these checks.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000248
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000249 Lot of changes were necessary in order to support this
250 without completely rewriting the lookup code.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000251
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000252 Authority and subject key identifier are now cached.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000253
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000254 The LHASH 'certs' is X509_STORE has now been replaced
255 by a STACK_OF(X509_OBJECT). This is mainly because an
256 LHASH can't store or retrieve multiple objects with
257 the same hash value.
258
259 As a result various functions (which were all internal
260 use only) have changed to handle the new X509_STORE
261 structure. This will break anything that messed round
262 with X509_STORE internally.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000263
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000264 The functions X509_STORE_add_cert() now checks for an
265 exact match, rather than just subject name.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000266
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000267 The X509_STORE API doesn't directly support the retrieval
268 of multiple certificates matching a given criteria, however
269 this can be worked round by performing a lookup first
270 (which will fill the cache with candidate certificates)
271 and then examining the cache for matches. This is probably
272 the best we can do without throwing out X509_LOOKUP
273 entirely (maybe later...).
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000274
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000275 The X509_VERIFY_CTX structure has been enhanced considerably.
276
277 All certificate lookup operations now go via a get_issuer()
278 callback. Although this currently uses an X509_STORE it
279 can be replaced by custom lookups. This is a simple way
280 to bypass the X509_STORE hackery necessary to make this
281 work and makes it possible to use more efficient techniques
282 in future. A very simple version which uses a simple
283 STACK for its trusted certificate store is also provided
284 using X509_STORE_CTX_trusted_stack().
285
286 The verify_cb() and verify() callbacks now have equivalents
287 in the X509_STORE_CTX structure.
288
289 X509_STORE_CTX also has a 'flags' field which can be used
290 to customise the verify behaviour.
291 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000292
Dr. Stephen Henson34216c02000-09-05 13:27:57 +0000293 *) Add new PKCS#7 signing option PKCS7_NOSMIMECAP which
294 excludes S/MIME capabilities.
295 [Steve Henson]
296
297 *) When a certificate request is read in keep a copy of the
298 original encoding of the signed data and use it when outputing
299 again. Signatures then use the original encoding rather than
300 a decoded, encoded version which may cause problems if the
301 request is improperly encoded.
302 [Steve Henson]
303
Bodo Mölleraffadbe2000-09-04 15:47:17 +0000304 *) For consistency with other BIO_puts implementations, call
305 buffer_write(b, ...) directly in buffer_puts instead of calling
306 BIO_write(b, ...).
Bodo Möller22c7ea42000-09-05 12:46:10 +0000307
308 In BIO_puts, increment b->num_write as in BIO_write.
Bodo Mölleraffadbe2000-09-04 15:47:17 +0000309 [Peter.Sylvester@EdelWeb.fr]
310
Bodo Möllerbbb8de02000-09-04 15:34:43 +0000311 *) Fix BN_mul_word for the case where the word is 0. (We have to use
312 BN_zero, we may not return a BIGNUM with an array consisting of
313 words set to zero.)
314 [Bodo Moeller]
315
316 *) Avoid calling abort() from within the library when problems are
317 detected, except if preprocessor symbols have been defined
318 (such as REF_CHECK, BN_DEBUG etc.).
319 [Bodo Moeller]
320
Dr. Stephen Hensonbd08a2b2000-09-03 23:13:48 +0000321 *) New openssl application 'rsautl'. This utility can be
322 used for low level RSA operations. DER public key
323 BIO/fp routines also added.
324 [Steve Henson]
325
Bodo Möllera545c6f2000-09-01 09:54:25 +0000326 *) New Configure entry and patches for compiling on QNX 4.
327 [Andreas Schneider <andreas@ds3.etech.fh-hamburg.de>]
328
Ben Laurie7049ef52000-08-30 18:14:28 +0000329 *) A demo state-machine implementation was sponsored by
330 Nuron (http://www.nuron.com/) and is now available in
331 demos/state_machine.
332 [Ben Laurie]
333
Dr. Stephen Henson7df1c722000-08-30 16:14:29 +0000334 *) New options added to the 'dgst' utility for signature
335 generation and verification.
336 [Steve Henson]
337
Dr. Stephen Hensond096b522000-08-22 22:20:25 +0000338 *) Unrecognized PKCS#7 content types are now handled via a
339 catch all ASN1_TYPE structure. This allows unsupported
340 types to be stored as a "blob" and an application can
341 encode and decode it manually.
342 [Steve Henson]
343
Dr. Stephen Henson7df1c722000-08-30 16:14:29 +0000344 *) Fix various signed/unsigned issues to make a_strex.c
Dr. Stephen Henson469938c2000-08-22 12:54:21 +0000345 compile under VC++.
346 [Oscar Jacobsson <oscar.jacobsson@celocom.com>]
347
348 *) ASN1 fixes. i2d_ASN1_OBJECT was not returning the correct
349 length if passed a buffer. ASN1_INTEGER_to_BN failed
350 if passed a NULL BN and its argument was negative.
351 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Sven Heiberg <sven@tartu.cyber.ee>]
352
Dr. Stephen Hensoneaa28182000-08-21 22:02:23 +0000353 *) Modification to PKCS#7 encoding routines to output definite
354 length encoding. Since currently the whole structures are in
355 memory there's not real point in using indefinite length
356 constructed encoding. However if OpenSSL is compiled with
357 the flag PKCS7_INDEFINITE_ENCODING the old form is used.
358 [Steve Henson]
359
Richard Levittee6629832000-08-18 09:36:59 +0000360 *) Added BIO_vprintf() and BIO_vsnprintf().
361 [Richard Levitte]
362
Richard Levitte6fd5a042000-08-17 23:27:03 +0000363 *) Added more prefixes to parse for in the the strings written
364 through a logging bio, to cover all the levels that are available
365 through syslog. The prefixes are now:
366
367 PANIC, EMERG, EMR => LOG_EMERG
368 ALERT, ALR => LOG_ALERT
369 CRIT, CRI => LOG_CRIT
370 ERROR, ERR => LOG_ERR
371 WARNING, WARN, WAR => LOG_WARNING
372 NOTICE, NOTE, NOT => LOG_NOTICE
373 INFO, INF => LOG_INFO
374 DEBUG, DBG => LOG_DEBUG
375
376 and as before, if none of those prefixes are present at the
377 beginning of the string, LOG_ERR is chosen.
378
379 On Win32, the LOG_* levels are mapped according to this:
380
381 LOG_EMERG, LOG_ALERT, LOG_CRIT, LOG_ERR => EVENTLOG_ERROR_TYPE
382 LOG_WARNING => EVENTLOG_WARNING_TYPE
383 LOG_NOTICE, LOG_INFO, LOG_DEBUG => EVENTLOG_INFORMATION_TYPE

386
Richard Levitte368f8552000-08-17 10:25:46 +0000387 *) Made it possible to reconfigure with just the configuration
388 argument "reconf" or "reconfigure". The command line arguments
389 are stored in Makefile.ssl in the variable CONFIGURE_ARGS,
390 and are retrieved from there when reconfiguring.

Richard Levitte88364bc2000-08-11 19:43:20 +0000396 *) Add the arguments -CAfile and -CApath to the pkcs12 utility.
397 [Richard Levitte]
398
Dr. Stephen Hensond4fbe312000-08-06 18:43:32 +0000399 *) The obj_dat.pl script was messing up the sorting of object
400 names. The reason was that it compared the quoted version
401 of strings as a result "OCSP" > "OCSP Signing" because
402 " > SPACE. Changed script to store unquoted versions of
403 names and add quotes on output. It was also omitting some
404 names from the lookup table if they were given a default
405 value (that is if SN is missing it is given the same
406 value as LN and vice versa), these are now added on the
407 grounds that if an object has a name we should be able to
408 look it up. Finally added warning output when duplicate
409 short or long names are found.

Bodo Mölleraa826d82000-07-29 19:27:20 +0000415 *) Fix SSL 2.0 rollback checking: Due to an off-by-one error in
416 RSA_padding_check_SSLv23(), special padding was never detected
417 and thus the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 countermeasure against protocol
418 version rollback attacks was not effective.
419
Bodo Möller37569e62000-07-29 18:50:41 +0000420 In s23_clnt.c, don't use special rollback-attack detection padding
421 (RSA_SSLV23_PADDING) if SSL 2.0 is the only protocol enabled in the
422 client; similarly, in s23_srvr.c, don't do the rollback check if
423 SSL 2.0 is the only protocol enabled in the server.
424 [Bodo Moeller]
425
Richard Levitteca1e4652000-07-27 17:28:25 +0000426 *) Make it possible to get hexdumps of unprintable data with 'openssl
427 asn1parse'. By implication, the functions ASN1_parse_dump() and
428 BIO_dump_indent() are added.
429 [Richard Levitte]
430
Dr. Stephen Hensona6575462000-07-28 01:58:15 +0000431 *) New functions ASN1_STRING_print_ex() and X509_NAME_print_ex()
432 these print out strings and name structures based on various
433 flags including RFC2253 support and proper handling of
434 multibyte characters. Added options to the 'x509' utility
435 to allow the various flags to be set.
436 [Steve Henson]
437
Dr. Stephen Henson284ef5f2000-07-26 01:18:37 +0000438 *) Various fixes to use ASN1_TIME instead of ASN1_UTCTIME.
439 Also change the functions X509_cmp_current_time() and
440 X509_gmtime_adj() work with an ASN1_TIME structure,
441 this will enable certificates using GeneralizedTime in validity
442 dates to be checked.
443 [Steve Henson]
444
445 *) Make the NEG_PUBKEY_BUG code (which tolerates invalid
446 negative public key encodings) on by default,
447 NO_NEG_PUBKEY_BUG can be set to disable it.
448 [Steve Henson]
449
450 *) New function c2i_ASN1_OBJECT() which acts on ASN1_OBJECT
451 content octets. An i2c_ASN1_OBJECT is unnecessary because
452 the encoding can be trivially obtained from the structure.
453 [Steve Henson]
454
Bodo Möllerfa729132000-07-21 15:17:04 +0000455 *) crypto/err.c locking bugfix: Use write locks (CRYPTO_w_[un]lock),

457 [Bodo Moeller]
458
Richard Levitteb436a982000-07-21 15:08:53 +0000459 *) A first attempt at creating official support for shared
460 libraries through configuration. I've kept it so the
461 default is static libraries only, and the OpenSSL programs
462 are always statically linked for now, but there are
463 preparations for dynamic linking in place.
464 This has been tested on Linux and True64.
465 [Richard Levitte]
466
Ulf Möllerc0722722000-07-19 21:35:35 +0000467 *) Randomness polling function for Win9x, as described in:

470 [Ulf Möller]
471
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd13f0e2000-07-12 23:55:30 +0000472 *) Fix so PRNG is seeded in req if using an already existing
473 DSA key.
474 [Steve Henson]
475
Dr. Stephen Henson094fe662000-07-10 18:33:05 +0000476 *) New options to smime application. -inform and -outform
477 allow alternative formats for the S/MIME message including
478 PEM and DER. The -content option allows the content to be
479 specified separately. This should allow things like Netscape
480 form signing output easier to verify.
481 [Steve Henson]
482
483 *) Fix the ASN1 encoding of tags using the 'long form'.
484 [Steve Henson]
485
Dr. Stephen Hensona338e212000-07-07 13:24:36 +0000486 *) New ASN1 functions, i2c_* and c2i_* for INTEGER and BIT
487 STRING types. These convert content octets to and from the
488 underlying type. The actual tag and length octets are
489 already assumed to have been read in and checked. These
490 are needed because all other string types have virtually
491 identical handling apart from the tag. By having versions
492 of the ASN1 functions that just operate on content octets
493 IMPLICIT tagging can be handled properly. It also allows
494 the ASN1_ENUMERATED code to be cut down because ASN1_ENUMERATED
495 and ASN1_INTEGER are identical apart from the tag.
496 [Steve Henson]
497
Richard Levitted5870bb2000-07-05 02:52:47 +0000498 *) Change the handling of OID objects as follows:
499
500 - New object identifiers are inserted in objects.txt, following
501 the syntax given in objects.README.
502 - objects.pl is used to process obj_mac.num and create a new
503 obj_mac.h.
504 - obj_dat.pl is used to create a new obj_dat.h, using the data in
505 obj_mac.h.
506
507 This is currently kind of a hack, and the perl code in objects.pl
508 isn't very elegant, but it works as I intended. The simplest way
509 to check that it worked correctly is to look in obj_dat.h and
510 check the array nid_objs and make sure the objects haven't moved
511 around (this is important!). Additions are OK, as well as
512 consistent name changes.
513 [Richard Levitte]
514
Bodo Möller1f4643a2000-06-23 18:00:16 +0000515 *) Add BSD-style MD5-based passwords to 'openssl passwd' (option '-1').
516 [Bodo Moeller]
517
Richard Levittefb0b8442000-06-22 09:19:59 +0000518 *) Addition of the command line parameter '-rand file' to 'openssl req'.
Richard Levitte1023b122000-06-22 21:17:46 +0000519 The given file adds to whatever has already been seeded into the

523
Dr. Stephen Henson4dd45352000-06-22 00:34:27 +0000524 *) mkstack.pl now sorts each macro group into lexical order.
525 Previously the output order depended on the order the files
526 appeared in the directory, resulting in needless rewriting
527 of safestack.h .
528 [Steve Henson]
529
Dr. Stephen Henson13083212000-06-21 02:25:30 +0000530 *) Patches to make OpenSSL compile under Win32 again. Mostly
531 work arounds for the VC++ problem that it treats func() as
532 func(void). Also stripped out the parts of mkdef.pl that
533 added extra typesafe functions: these no longer exist.
534 [Steve Henson]
535
Dr. Stephen Henson3aceb942000-06-16 23:29:26 +0000536 *) Reorganisation of the stack code. The macros are now all
537 collected in safestack.h . Each macro is defined in terms of
538 a "stack macro" of the form SKM_<name>(type, a, b). The
539 DEBUG_SAFESTACK is now handled in terms of function casts,
540 this has the advantage of retaining type safety without the
541 use of additional functions. If DEBUG_SAFESTACK is not defined
542 then the non typesafe macros are used instead. Also modified the
543 mkstack.pl script to handle the new form. Needs testing to see
544 if which (if any) compilers it chokes and maybe make DEBUG_SAFESTACK
Dr. Stephen Henson7ef82062000-06-20 18:45:28 +0000545 the default if no major problems. Similar behaviour for ASN1_SET_OF
546 and PKCS12_STACK_OF.

548
Dr. Stephen Hensond3ed8ce2000-06-15 23:48:05 +0000549 *) When some versions of IIS use the 'NET' form of private key the
550 key derivation algorithm is different. Normally MD5(password) is
551 used as a 128 bit RC4 key. In the modified case
552 MD5(MD5(password) + "SGCKEYSALT") is used insted. Added some
553 new functions i2d_RSA_NET(), d2i_RSA_NET() etc which are the same
554 as the old Netscape_RSA functions except they have an additional
555 'sgckey' parameter which uses the modified algorithm. Also added
556 an -sgckey command line option to the rsa utility. Thanks to
557 Adrian Peck <bertie@ncipher.com> for posting details of the modified
558 algorithm to openssl-dev.
559 [Steve Henson]
560
Dr. Stephen Hensone366f2b2000-06-11 15:43:17 +0000561 *) The evp_local.h macros were using 'c.##kname' which resulted in
562 invalid expansion on some systems (SCO 5.0.5 for example).
563 Corrected to 'c.kname'.
564 [Phillip Porch <root@theporch.com>]
565
Dr. Stephen Hensona91dedc2000-06-11 12:18:15 +0000566 *) New X509_get1_email() and X509_REQ_get1_email() functions that return
567 a STACK of email addresses from a certificate or request, these look
568 in the subject name and the subject alternative name extensions and
569 omit any duplicate addresses.
570 [Steve Henson]
571
Bodo Möllerdc434bb2000-06-08 20:26:03 +0000572 *) Re-implement BN_mod_exp2_mont using independent (and larger) windows.
573 This makes DSA verification about 2 % faster.
574 [Bodo Moeller]
575
576 *) Increase maximum window size in BN_mod_exp_... to 6 bits instead of 5
577 (meaning that now 2^5 values will be precomputed, which is only 4 KB
578 plus overhead for 1024 bit moduli).
579 This makes exponentiations about 0.5 % faster for 1024 bit
580 exponents (as measured by "openssl speed rsa2048").
581 [Bodo Moeller]
582
Bodo Möller947b3b82000-06-08 15:01:14 +0000583 *) Rename memory handling macros to avoid conflicts with other
584 software:
585 Malloc => OPENSSL_malloc
586 Malloc_locked => OPENSSL_malloc_locked
587 Realloc => OPENSSL_realloc
588 Free => OPENSSL_free
589 [Richard Levitte]
590
Bodo Möller482a9d42000-06-10 12:05:52 +0000591 *) New function BN_mod_exp_mont_word for small bases (roughly 15%
592 faster than BN_mod_exp_mont, i.e. 7% for a full DH exchange).
Bodo Möller6dad7bd2000-06-07 21:29:25 +0000593 [Bodo Moeller]
594
Ulf Möllerbe5d92e2000-06-03 23:23:10 +0000595 *) CygWin32 support.
596 [John Jarvie <jjarvie@newsguy.com>]
597
Geoff Thorpee41c8d62000-06-01 05:13:52 +0000598 *) The type-safe stack code has been rejigged. It is now only compiled
599 in when OpenSSL is configured with the DEBUG_SAFESTACK option and
600 by default all type-specific stack functions are "#define"d back to
601 standard stack functions. This results in more streamlined output
602 but retains the type-safety checking possibilities of the original
603 approach.
604 [Geoff Thorpe]
605
Geoff Thorpeccd86b62000-06-01 02:36:58 +0000606 *) The STACK code has been cleaned up, and certain type declarations
607 that didn't make a lot of sense have been brought in line. This has
608 also involved a cleanup of sorts in safestack.h to more correctly
609 map type-safe stack functions onto their plain stack counterparts.
610 This work has also resulted in a variety of "const"ifications of
611 lots of the code, especially "_cmp" operations which should normally
612 be prototyped with "const" parameters anyway.
613 [Geoff Thorpe]
614
Bodo Möller361ee972000-05-30 21:44:36 +0000615 *) When generating bytes for the first time in md_rand.c, 'stir the pool'
616 by seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes (with zero entropy count).
617 (The PRNG state consists of two parts, the large pool 'state' and 'md',
618 where all of 'md' is used each time the PRNG is used, but 'state'
619 is used only indexed by a cyclic counter. As entropy may not be
620 well distributed from the beginning, 'md' is important as a
621 chaining variable. However, the output function chains only half
622 of 'md', i.e. 80 bits. ssleay_rand_add, on the other hand, chains
623 all of 'md', and seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes will result
624 in all of 'state' being rewritten, with the new values depending
625 on virtually all of 'md'. This overcomes the 80 bit limitation.)
626 [Bodo Moeller]
627
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000628 *) In ssl/s2_clnt.c and ssl/s3_clnt.c, call ERR_clear_error() when
629 the handshake is continued after ssl_verify_cert_chain();
630 otherwise, if SSL_VERIFY_NONE is set, remaining error codes
631 can lead to 'unexplainable' connection aborts later.
632 [Bodo Moeller; problem tracked down by Lutz Jaenicke]
633
634 *) Major EVP API cipher revision.
635 Add hooks for extra EVP features. This allows various cipher
636 parameters to be set in the EVP interface. Support added for variable
637 key length ciphers via the EVP_CIPHER_CTX_set_key_length() function and
638 setting of RC2 and RC5 parameters.
639
640 Modify EVP_OpenInit() and EVP_SealInit() to cope with variable key length
641 ciphers.
642
643 Remove lots of duplicated code from the EVP library. For example *every*
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000644 cipher init() function handles the 'iv' in the same way according to the
645 cipher mode. They also all do nothing if the 'key' parameter is NULL and
646 for CFB and OFB modes they zero ctx->num.
647
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000648 New functionality allows removal of S/MIME code RC2 hack.
649
Dr. Stephen Henson57ae2e22000-05-30 02:10:57 +0000650 Most of the routines have the same form and so can be declared in terms
651 of macros.
652
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000653 By shifting this to the top level EVP_CipherInit() it can be removed from
654 all individual ciphers. If the cipher wants to handle IVs or keys
655 differently it can set the EVP_CIPH_CUSTOM_IV or EVP_CIPH_ALWAYS_CALL_INIT
656 flags.
Dr. Stephen Hensonbe06a932000-05-27 12:38:43 +0000657
658 Change lots of functions like EVP_EncryptUpdate() to now return a
659 value: although software versions of the algorithms cannot fail
660 any installed hardware versions can.

662
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000663 *) Implement SSL_OP_TLS_ROLLBACK_BUG: In ssl3_get_client_key_exchange, if
664 this option is set, tolerate broken clients that send the negotiated
665 protocol version number instead of the requested protocol version
666 number.
667 [Bodo Moeller]
668
669 *) Call dh_tmp_cb (set by ..._TMP_DH_CB) with correct 'is_export' flag;
670 i.e. non-zero for export ciphersuites, zero otherwise.
671 Previous versions had this flag inverted, inconsistent with
672 rsa_tmp_cb (..._TMP_RSA_CB).
673 [Bodo Moeller; problem reported by Amit Chopra]
674
Dr. Stephen Hensonb4b41f42000-05-24 13:09:59 +0000675 *) Add missing DSA library text string. Work around for some IIS
676 key files with invalid SEQUENCE encoding.
677 [Steve Henson]
678
Richard Levitte6d7cce42000-05-18 21:25:48 +0000679 *) Add a document (doc/standards.txt) that list all kinds of standards
680 and so on that are implemented in OpenSSL.
681 [Richard Levitte]
682
Dr. Stephen Henson439df502000-05-18 00:33:00 +0000683 *) Enhance c_rehash script. Old version would mishandle certificates
684 with the same subject name hash and wouldn't handle CRLs at all.
685 Added -fingerprint option to crl utility, to support new c_rehash
686 features.
687 [Steve Henson]
688
Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000689 *) Eliminate non-ANSI declarations in crypto.h and stack.h.
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000690 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000691
Dr. Stephen Henson0cb957a2000-05-04 23:03:49 +0000692 *) Fix for SSL server purpose checking. Server checking was
693 rejecting certificates which had extended key usage present
694 but no ssl client purpose.
695 [Steve Henson, reported by Rene Grosser <grosser@hisolutions.com>]
696
Dr. Stephen Hensona331a302000-05-04 00:08:35 +0000697 *) Make PKCS#12 code work with no password. The PKCS#12 spec
698 is a little unclear about how a blank password is handled.
699 Since the password in encoded as a BMPString with terminating
700 double NULL a zero length password would end up as just the
701 double NULL. However no password at all is different and is
702 handled differently in the PKCS#12 key generation code. NS
703 treats a blank password as zero length. MSIE treats it as no
704 password on export: but it will try both on import. We now do
705 the same: PKCS12_parse() tries zero length and no password if
706 the password is set to "" or NULL (NULL is now a valid password:
707 it wasn't before) as does the pkcs12 application.
708 [Steve Henson]
709
Bodo Möller316e6a62000-05-02 20:29:03 +0000710 *) Bugfixes in apps/x509.c: Avoid a memory leak; and don't use
711 perror when PEM_read_bio_X509_REQ fails, the error message must
712 be obtained from the error queue.
713 [Bodo Moeller]
714
Bodo Möllerdcba2532000-04-29 23:58:05 +0000715 *) Avoid 'thread_hash' memory leak in crypto/err/err.c by freeing
716 it in ERR_remove_state if appropriate, and change ERR_get_state
717 accordingly to avoid race conditions (this is necessary because
718 thread_hash is no longer constant once set).
719 [Bodo Moeller]
720
Ulf Möller39736282000-04-27 15:06:26 +0000721 *) Bugfix for linux-elf makefile.one.
722 [Ulf Möller]
723
Geoff Thorpedeb4d502000-04-20 06:44:18 +0000724 *) RSA_get_default_method() will now cause a default
725 RSA_METHOD to be chosen if one doesn't exist already.
726 Previously this was only set during a call to RSA_new()
727 or RSA_new_method(NULL) meaning it was possible for
728 RSA_get_default_method() to return NULL.
729 [Geoff Thorpe]
730
Geoff Thorpeb9e63912000-04-19 21:45:17 +0000731 *) Added native name translation to the existing DSO code
732 that will convert (if the flag to do so is set) filenames
733 that are sufficiently small and have no path information
734 into a canonical native form. Eg. "blah" converted to
735 "libblah.so" or "blah.dll" etc.
736 [Geoff Thorpe]
737
Bodo Möllere5c84d52000-04-14 23:36:15 +0000738 *) New function ERR_error_string_n(e, buf, len) which is like
739 ERR_error_string(e, buf), but writes at most 'len' bytes

Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000744 *) CONF library reworked to become more general. A new CONF
745 configuration file reader "class" is implemented as well as a
746 new functions (NCONF_*, for "New CONF") to handle it. The now
747 old CONF_* functions are still there, but are reimplemented to
748 work in terms of the new functions. Also, a set of functions
749 to handle the internal storage of the configuration data is
750 provided to make it easier to write new configuration file
751 reader "classes" (I can definitely see something reading a
752 configuration file in XML format, for example), called _CONF_*,
753 or "the configuration storage API"...
754
755 The new configuration file reading functions are:
756
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000757 NCONF_new, NCONF_free, NCONF_load, NCONF_load_fp, NCONF_load_bio,
758 NCONF_get_section, NCONF_get_string, NCONF_get_numbre
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000759
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000760 NCONF_default, NCONF_WIN32
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000761
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000762 NCONF_dump_fp, NCONF_dump_bio
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000763
764 NCONF_default and NCONF_WIN32 are method (or "class") choosers,
765 NCONF_new creates a new CONF object. This works in the same way
766 as other interfaces in OpenSSL, like the BIO interface.
767 NCONF_dump_* dump the internal storage of the configuration file,
768 which is useful for debugging. All other functions take the same
769 arguments as the old CONF_* functions wth the exception of the
770 first that must be a `CONF *' instead of a `LHASH *'.
771
772 To make it easer to use the new classes with the old CONF_* functions,
773 the function CONF_set_default_method is provided.
774 [Richard Levitte]
775
Bodo Möller1d90f282000-04-06 22:33:14 +0000776 *) Add '-tls1' option to 'openssl ciphers', which was already
777 mentioned in the documentation but had not been implemented.
778 (This option is not yet really useful because even the additional
779 experimental TLS 1.0 ciphers are currently treated as SSL 3.0 ciphers.)
780 [Bodo Moeller]
781
Geoff Thorpe6ef4d9d2000-04-04 22:49:27 +0000782 *) Initial DSO code added into libcrypto for letting OpenSSL (and

Bodo Möllercf194c12000-03-30 08:12:35 +0000791 *) Use lock CRYPTO_LOCK_RAND correctly in ssleay_rand_status
792 (the default implementation of RAND_status).
793
Bodo Möller3bc90f22000-03-27 18:10:08 +0000794 *) Rename openssl x509 option '-crlext', which was added in 0.9.5,

798
Dr. Stephen Hensonb475baf2000-03-27 00:53:27 +0000799 *) Fix for HMAC. It wasn't zeroing the rest of the block if the key length

802
Dr. Stephen Hensone77066e2000-03-22 13:50:23 +0000803 *) Modernise PKCS12_parse() so it uses STACK_OF(X509) for its ca argument
804 fix a leak when the ca argument was passed as NULL. Stop X509_PUBKEY_set()
805 using the passed key: if the passed key was a private key the result

816 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Brian Korver <briank@cs.stanford.edu>]
817
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000818 *) For easily testing in shell scripts whether some command
819 'openssl XXX' exists, the new pseudo-command 'openssl no-XXX'
Bodo Möllerdf1ff3f2000-03-13 21:01:05 +0000820 returns with exit code 0 iff no command of the given name is available.
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000821 'no-XXX' is printed in this case, 'XXX' otherwise. In both cases,
Bodo Möller46c46472000-03-13 20:31:46 +0000822 the output goes to stdout and nothing is printed to stderr.
823 Additional arguments are always ignored.
824
825 Since for each cipher there is a command of the same name,

Bodo Möllere11f0de2000-03-13 17:07:04 +0000835 *) For SSL_[CTX_]set_tmp_dh, don't create a DH key if SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE
836 is set; it will be thrown away anyway because each handshake creates
837 its own key.
838 ssl_cert_dup, which is used by SSL_new, now copies DH keys in addition
839 to parameters -- in previous versions (since OpenSSL 0.9.3) the
840 'default key' from SSL_CTX_set_tmp_dh would always be lost, meanining
841 you effectivly got SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE when using this macro.
842 [Bodo Moeller]
843
Bodo Möller2d5e4492000-03-10 13:49:02 +0000844 *) New s_client option -ign_eof: EOF at stdin is ignored, and
845 'Q' and 'R' lose their special meanings (quit/renegotiate).
846 This is part of what -quiet does; unlike -quiet, -ign_eof
847 does not suppress any output.
848 [Richard Levitte]
849
Bodo Möllerdaf4e532000-03-07 15:10:08 +0000850 *) Add compatibility options to the purpose and trust code. The
Dr. Stephen Henson068fdce2000-03-07 14:04:29 +0000851 purpose X509_PURPOSE_ANY is "any purpose" which automatically
852 accepts a certificate or CA, this was the previous behaviour,
853 with all the associated security issues.
854
855 X509_TRUST_COMPAT is the old trust behaviour: only and
856 automatically trust self signed roots in certificate store. A
857 new trust setting X509_TRUST_DEFAULT is used to specify that
858 a purpose has no associated trust setting and it should instead
859 use the value in the default purpose.
860 [Steve Henson]
861
Dr. Stephen Henson48fe0ee2000-03-07 01:03:33 +0000862 *) Fix the PKCS#8 DSA private key code so it decodes keys again

864 [Steve Henson]
865
Bodo Möller59fc2b02000-03-05 00:19:36 +0000866 *) In util/mkerr.pl (which implements 'make errors'), preserve

870 [Bodo Moeller]
871
Bodo Möller0a150c52000-03-04 01:36:53 +0000872 *) In ERR_load_ERR_strings(), build an ERR_LIB_SYS error reason table

874 library names as reason strings for SYSerr; but SYSerr is a special
875 case where small numbers are errno values, not library numbers.
876 [Bodo Moeller]
877
Bodo Möller41918452000-03-03 22:18:19 +0000878 *) Add '-dsaparam' option to 'openssl dhparam' application. This
879 converts DSA parameters into DH parameters. (When creating parameters,
880 DSA_generate_parameters is used.)
881 [Bodo Moeller]
882
883 *) Include 'length' (recommended exponent length) in C code generated

885 [Bodo Moeller]
886
Dr. Stephen Hensond9c88a32000-03-03 00:06:40 +0000887 *) The second argument to set_label in perlasm was already being used

890 [Steve Henson]
891
Bodo Möller84d14402000-03-02 22:44:55 +0000892 *) In PEM_ASN1_write_bio and some other functions, use RAND_pseudo_bytes

894 [Bodo Moeller]
895
Bodo Möller5eb8ca42000-03-02 14:34:58 +0000896 *) Include RAND_status() into RAND_METHOD instead of implementing

898 RAND_set_rand_method would be impossible.
899 [Bodo Moeller]
900
Ulf Möller7a2dfc22000-03-01 19:07:58 +0000901 *) Don't let DSA_generate_key() enter an infinite loop if the random

932
Dr. Stephen Henson94de0412000-02-27 01:15:25 +0000933 *) Add an optional second argument to the set_label() in the perl
934 assembly language builder. If this argument exists and is set
935 to 1 it signals that the assembler should use a symbol whose
936 scope is the entire file, not just the current function. This
937 is needed with MASM which uses the format label:: for this scope.

939
Dr. Stephen Henson02021972000-02-26 19:25:31 +0000940 *) Change the ASN1 types so they are typedefs by default. Before
941 almost all types were #define'd to ASN1_STRING which was causing
942 STACK_OF() problems: you couldn't declare STACK_OF(ASN1_UTF8STRING)
943 for example.
944 [Steve Henson]
945
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +0000946 *) Change names of new functions to the new get1/get0 naming
947 convention: After 'get1', the caller owns a reference count
948 and has to call ..._free; 'get0' returns a pointer to some
949 data structure without incrementing reference counters.
950 (Some of the existing 'get' functions increment a reference
951 counter, some don't.)
952 Similarly, 'set1' and 'add1' functions increase reference
953 counters or duplicate objects.

955
Dr. Stephen Hensonfbb41ae2000-02-25 00:23:48 +0000956 *) Allow for the possibility of temp RSA key generation failure:

958 [Steve Henson]
959
Ulf Möller505b5a02000-02-24 22:57:42 +0000960 *) Fix potential buffer overrun problem in BIO_printf().

963
Ulf Möller4ec2d4d2000-02-24 02:51:47 +0000964 *) Support EGD <http://www.lothar.com/tech/crypto/>. New functions
965 RAND_egd() and RAND_status(). In the command line application,
966 the EGD socket can be specified like a seed file using RANDFILE
967 or -rand.
968 [Ulf Möller]
969
Dr. Stephen Henson3142c862000-02-23 01:11:01 +0000970 *) Allow the string CERTIFICATE to be tolerated in PKCS#7 structures.
971 Some CAs (e.g. Verisign) distribute certificates in this form.
972 [Steve Henson]
973
974 *) Remove the SSL_ALLOW_ADH compile option and set the default cipher
975 list to exclude them. This means that no special compilation option
976 is needed to use anonymous DH: it just needs to be included in the
977 cipher list.
978 [Steve Henson]
979
Dr. Stephen Henson72b60352000-02-22 02:59:26 +0000980 *) Change the EVP_MD_CTX_type macro so its meaning consistent with
981 EVP_MD_type. The old functionality is available in a new macro called
982 EVP_MD_md(). Change code that uses it and update docs.
983 [Steve Henson]
984
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000985 *) ..._ctrl functions now have corresponding ..._callback_ctrl functions
986 where the 'void *' argument is replaced by a function pointer argument.
987 Previously 'void *' was abused to point to functions, which works on
988 many platforms, but is not correct. As these functions are usually
989 called by macros defined in OpenSSL header files, most source code
990 should work without changes.
Ulf Möllercdf20e02000-02-23 21:57:22 +0000991 [Richard Levitte]
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000992
993 *) <openssl/opensslconf.h> (which is created by Configure) now contains
994 sections with information on -D... compiler switches used for
995 compiling the library so that applications can see them. To enable
996 one of these sections, a pre-processor symbol OPENSSL_..._DEFINES
997 must be defined. E.g.,
998 #define OPENSSL_ALGORITHM_DEFINES
999 #include <openssl/opensslconf.h>
1000 defines all pertinent NO_<algo> symbols, such as NO_IDEA, NO_RSA, etc.

1005 [Bodo Moeller]
1006
Dr. Stephen Hensond754b382000-02-20 18:27:23 +00001007 *) Change the 'other' type in certificate aux info to a STACK_OF
1008 X509_ALGOR. Although not an AlgorithmIdentifier as such it has
1009 the required ASN1 format: arbitrary types determined by an OID.
1010 [Steve Henson]
1011
Dr. Stephen Henson8a208cb2000-02-18 00:54:21 +00001012 *) Add some PEM_write_X509_REQ_NEW() functions and a command line
1013 argument to 'req'. This is not because the function is newer or
1014 better than others it just uses the work 'NEW' in the certificate
1015 request header lines. Some software needs this.
1016 [Steve Henson]
1017
Dr. Stephen Hensona3fe3822000-02-16 23:16:01 +00001018 *) Reorganise password command line arguments: now passwords can be
1019 obtained from various sources. Delete the PEM_cb function and make
1020 it the default behaviour: i.e. if the callback is NULL and the
1021 usrdata argument is not NULL interpret it as a null terminated pass
1022 phrase. If usrdata and the callback are NULL then the pass phrase
1023 is prompted for as usual.
1024 [Steve Henson]
1025
Ben Lauriebd03b992000-02-16 22:15:39 +00001026 *) Add support for the Compaq Atalla crypto accelerator. If it is installed,
1027 the support is automatically enabled. The resulting binaries will
1028 autodetect the card and use it if present.
1029 [Ben Laurie and Compaq Inc.]
1030
Dr. Stephen Hensonde469ef2000-02-15 14:19:44 +00001031 *) Work around for Netscape hang bug. This sends certificate request
1032 and server done in one record. Since this is perfectly legal in the
1033 SSL/TLS protocol it isn't a "bug" option and is on by default. See
1034 the bugs/SSLv3 entry for more info.
1035 [Steve Henson]
1036
Andy Polyakovbcba6cc2000-02-12 23:33:01 +00001037 *) HP-UX tune-up: new unified configs, HP C compiler bug workaround.
1038 [Andy Polyakov]
1039
Dr. Stephen Hensond13e4eb2000-02-12 03:03:04 +00001040 *) Add -rand argument to smime and pkcs12 applications and read/write
1041 of seed file.
1042 [Steve Henson]
1043
Bodo Möller3ebf0be2000-02-11 17:18:50 +00001044 *) New 'passwd' tool for crypt(3) and apr1 password hashes.
Bodo Möllerbb325c72000-02-10 21:50:52 +00001045 [Bodo Moeller]
1046
Dr. Stephen Hensonf07fb9b2000-02-08 01:34:59 +00001047 *) Add command line password options to the remaining applications.
1048 [Steve Henson]
1049
Ulf Möllercae55bf2000-02-06 15:56:59 +00001050 *) Bug fix for BN_div_recp() for numerators with an even number of
1051 bits.
1052 [Ulf Möller]
1053
1054 *) More tests in bntest.c, and changed test_bn output.
1055 [Ulf Möller]
1056
Andy Polyakov0fad6cb2000-02-06 11:15:20 +00001057 *) ./config recognizes MacOS X now.
1058 [Andy Polyakov]
1059
Ulf Möller4a6222d2000-02-06 00:25:39 +00001060 *) Bug fix for BN_div() when the first words of num and divsor are
1061 equal (it gave wrong results if (rem=(n1-q*d0)&BN_MASK2) < d0).
1062 [Ulf Möller]
1063
Dr. Stephen Henson66430202000-02-05 21:07:56 +00001064 *) Add support for various broken PKCS#8 formats, and command line
1065 options to produce them.
1066 [Steve Henson]
1067
Ulf Möller9b141122000-02-05 14:17:32 +00001068 *) New functions BN_CTX_start(), BN_CTX_get() and BT_CTX_end() to
1069 get temporary BIGNUMs from a BN_CTX.
1070 [Ulf Möller]
1071
1072 *) Correct return values in BN_mod_exp_mont() and BN_mod_exp2_mont()
1073 for p == 0.
1074 [Ulf Möller]
1075
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf57d842000-02-04 14:01:38 +00001076 *) Change the SSLeay_add_all_*() functions to OpenSSL_add_all_*() and
1077 include a #define from the old name to the new. The original intent
1078 was that statically linked binaries could for example just call
1079 SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() to just add ciphers to the table and not
1080 link with digests. This never worked becayse SSLeay_add_all_digests()
1081 and SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() were in the same source file so calling
1082 one would link with the other. They are now in separate source files.
1083 [Steve Henson]
1084
Dr. Stephen Henson82fc1d92000-02-03 02:56:48 +00001085 *) Add a new -notext option to 'ca' and a -pubkey option to 'spkac'.
1086 [Steve Henson]
1087
Bodo Möllere74231e2000-02-02 21:20:44 +00001088 *) Use a less unusual form of the Miller-Rabin primality test (it used
1089 a binary algorithm for exponentiation integrated into the Miller-Rabin
1090 loop, our standard modexp algorithms are faster).
1091 [Bodo Moeller]
1092
Bodo Möller2c5fe5b2000-02-01 07:50:42 +00001093 *) Support for the EBCDIC character set completed.
Ulf Möller8efb6012000-02-01 02:21:16 +00001094 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@Mch.SNI.De>]
1095
Ulf Möller98d0b2e2000-01-30 23:34:33 +00001096 *) Source code cleanups: use const where appropriate, eliminate casts,
1097 use void * instead of char * in lhash.
1098 [Ulf Möller]
1099
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001100 *) Bugfix: ssl3_send_server_key_exchange was not restartable
1101 (the state was not changed to SSL3_ST_SW_KEY_EXCH_B, and because of
1102 this the server could overwrite ephemeral keys that the client
1103 has already seen).
1104 [Bodo Moeller]
1105
1106 *) Turn DSA_is_prime into a macro that calls BN_is_prime,
1107 using 50 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test.
1108
1109 DSA_generate_parameters now uses BN_is_prime_fasttest (with 50
1110 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test as required by the appendix
1111 to FIPS PUB 186[-1]) instead of DSA_is_prime.
1112 As BN_is_prime_fasttest includes trial division, DSA parameter
1113 generation becomes much faster.
1114
1115 This implies a change for the callback functions in DSA_is_prime
Bodo Möllercdd43b52000-01-30 11:05:39 +00001116 and DSA_generate_parameters: The callback function is called once
1117 for each positive witness in the Rabin-Miller test, not just
1118 occasionally in the inner loop; and the parameters to the
1119 callback function now provide an iteration count for the outer
1120 loop rather than for the current invocation of the inner loop.
1121 DSA_generate_parameters additionally can call the callback
1122 function with an 'iteration count' of -1, meaning that a
1123 candidate has passed the trial division test (when q is generated
1124 from an application-provided seed, trial division is skipped).
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001125 [Bodo Moeller]
1126
Bodo Möller7865b872000-01-30 02:40:38 +00001127 *) New function BN_is_prime_fasttest that optionally does trial
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001128 division before starting the Rabin-Miller test and has
1129 an additional BN_CTX * argument (whereas BN_is_prime always
1130 has to allocate at least one BN_CTX).
Bodo Möller1baa9492000-01-30 03:32:28 +00001131 'callback(1, -1, cb_arg)' is called when a number has passed the

Dr. Stephen Hensone1314b52000-01-29 00:00:26 +00001135 *) Fix for bug in CRL encoding. The validity dates weren't being handled

1137 [Steve Henson]
1138
Dr. Stephen Henson90644dd2000-01-28 01:35:31 +00001139 *) New -pkcs12 option to CA.pl script to write out a PKCS#12 file.
1140 [Steve Henson]
1141
Ulf Möller38e33ce2000-01-27 19:31:26 +00001142 *) New function BN_pseudo_rand().

Ulf Möllere93f9a32000-01-27 01:50:42 +00001145 *) Clean up BN_mod_mul_montgomery(): replace the broken (and unreadable)
1146 bignum version of BN_from_montgomery() with the working code from
1147 SSLeay 0.9.0 (the word based version is faster anyway), and clean up
1148 the comments.
1149 [Ulf Möller]
1150
Bodo Möller2557eae2000-01-24 17:57:56 +00001151 *) Avoid a race condition in s2_clnt.c (function get_server_hello) that
1152 made it impossible to use the same SSL_SESSION data structure in
1153 SSL2 clients in multiple threads.
1154 [Bodo Moeller]
1155
Bodo Möllera46faa22000-01-24 16:02:29 +00001156 *) The return value of RAND_load_file() no longer counts bytes obtained

1158 to seed the PRNG (previously an explicit byte count was required).

Dr. Stephen Hensondd9d2332000-01-23 23:41:49 +00001161 *) Clean up CRYPTO_EX_DATA functions, some of these didn't have prototypes

1163 [Steve Henson]
1164
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001165 *) Make BN_generate_prime() return NULL on error if ret!=NULL.
1166 [Ulf Möller]
1167
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001168 *) Retain source code compatibility for BN_prime_checks macro:
1169 BN_is_prime(..., BN_prime_checks, ...) now uses
1170 BN_prime_checks_for_size to determine the appropriate number of
1171 Rabin-Miller iterations.
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001172 [Ulf Möller]
1173
1174 *) Diffie-Hellman uses "safe" primes: DH_check() return code renamed to
1175 DH_CHECK_P_NOT_SAFE_PRIME.
1176 (Check if this is true? OpenPGP calls them "strong".)
1177 [Ulf Möller]
1178
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +00001179 *) Merge the functionality of "dh" and "gendh" programs into a new program
1180 "dhparam". The old programs are retained for now but will handle DH keys
1181 (instead of parameters) in future.
1182 [Steve Henson]
1183
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +00001184 *) Make the ciphers, s_server and s_client programs check the return values
1185 when a new cipher list is set.
1186 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson018e57c2000-01-22 03:17:06 +00001187
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +00001188 *) Enhance the SSL/TLS cipher mechanism to correctly handle the TLS 56bit
1189 ciphers. Before when the 56bit ciphers were enabled the sorting was
1190 wrong.
1191
1192 The syntax for the cipher sorting has been extended to support sorting by
1193 cipher-strength (using the strength_bits hard coded in the tables).
1194 The new command is "@STRENGTH" (see also doc/apps/ciphers.pod).
1195
1196 Fix a bug in the cipher-command parser: when supplying a cipher command
1197 string with an "undefined" symbol (neither command nor alphanumeric
1198 [A-Za-z0-9], ssl_set_cipher_list used to hang in an endless loop. Now
1199 an error is flagged.
1200
1201 Due to the strength-sorting extension, the code of the
1202 ssl_create_cipher_list() function was completely rearranged. I hope that
1203 the readability was also increased :-)
1204 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE>]
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +00001205
Dr. Stephen Henson81004902000-01-21 02:42:14 +00001206 *) Minor change to 'x509' utility. The -CAcreateserial option now uses 1
1207 for the first serial number and places 2 in the serial number file. This
1208 avoids problems when the root CA is created with serial number zero and
1209 the first user certificate has the same issuer name and serial number
1210 as the root CA.
1211 [Steve Henson]
1212
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +00001213 *) Fixes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities, change the 'req' program so it uses
1214 the new code. Add documentation for this stuff.
1215 [Steve Henson]
1216
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +00001217 *) Changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities. These have been renamed from
1218 X509_*() to X509at_*() on the grounds that they don't handle X509
1219 structures and behave in an analagous way to the X509v3 functions:
1220 they shouldn't be called directly but wrapper functions should be used
1221 instead.
1222
1223 So we also now have some wrapper functions that call the X509at functions
1224 when passed certificate requests. (TO DO: similar things can be done with
1225 PKCS#7 signed and unsigned attributes, PKCS#12 attributes and a few other
1226 things. Some of these need some d2i or i2d and print functionality
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +00001227 because they handle more complex structures.)
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +00001228 [Steve Henson]
1229
Ulf Mölleraa82db42000-01-16 21:10:00 +00001230 *) Add missing #ifndefs that caused missing symbols when building libssl
1231 as a shared library without RSA. Use #ifndef NO_SSL2 instead of
1232 NO_RSA in ssl/s2*.c.
1233 [Kris Kennaway <kris@hub.freebsd.org>, modified by Ulf Möller]
1234
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +00001235 *) Precautions against using the PRNG uninitialized: RAND_bytes() now
Bodo Möller09837602000-01-13 21:20:26 +00001236 has a return value which indicates the quality of the random data
1237 (1 = ok, 0 = not seeded). Also an error is recorded on the thread's
Ulf Möller373b5752000-01-16 15:58:17 +00001238 error queue. New function RAND_pseudo_bytes() generates output that is
Bodo Möller853f7572000-02-19 15:22:53 +00001239 guaranteed to be unique but not unpredictable. RAND_add is like
1240 RAND_seed, but takes an extra argument for an entropy estimate
1241 (RAND_seed always assumes full entropy).
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +00001242 [Ulf Möller]
1243
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +00001244 *) Do more iterations of Rabin-Miller probable prime test (specifically,
1245 3 for 1024-bit primes, 6 for 512-bit primes, 12 for 256-bit primes
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001246 instead of only 2 for all lengths; see BN_prime_checks_for_size definition
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001247 in crypto/bn/bn_prime.c for the complete table). This guarantees a
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001248 false-positive rate of at most 2^-80 for random input.
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +00001249 [Bodo Moeller]
1250
Bodo Möller3cc6cde2000-01-11 08:09:27 +00001251 *) Rewrite ssl3_read_n (ssl/s3_pkt.c) avoiding a couple of bugs.
Bodo Möllerc51ae172000-01-11 01:07:26 +00001252 [Bodo Moeller]
1253
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001254 *) New function X509_CTX_rget_chain() (renamed to X509_CTX_get1_chain
1255 in the 0.9.5 release), this returns the chain
Dr. Stephen Henson25f923d2000-01-09 14:21:40 +00001256 from an X509_CTX structure with a dup of the stack and all
1257 the X509 reference counts upped: so the stack will exist
1258 after X509_CTX_cleanup() has been called. Modify pkcs12.c
1259 to use this.
1260
1261 Also make SSL_SESSION_print() print out the verify return
1262 code.
1263 [Steve Henson]
1264
Dr. Stephen Hensondad666f2000-01-08 03:16:04 +00001265 *) Add manpage for the pkcs12 command. Also change the default
1266 behaviour so MAC iteration counts are used unless the new
1267 -nomaciter option is used. This improves file security and
1268 only older versions of MSIE (4.0 for example) need it.
1269 [Steve Henson]
1270
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001271 *) Honor the no-xxx Configure options when creating .DEF files.
1272 [Ulf Möller]
1273
Dr. Stephen Henson35f48502000-01-07 00:55:54 +00001274 *) Add PKCS#10 attributes to field table: challengePassword,
1275 unstructuredName and unstructuredAddress. These are taken from
1276 draft PKCS#9 v2.0 but are compatible with v1.2 provided no
1277 international characters are used.
1278
1279 More changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE code: allow the setting of types
1280 based on strings. Remove the 'loc' parameter when adding
1281 attributes because these will be a SET OF encoding which is sorted
1282 in ASN1 order.
1283 [Steve Henson]
1284
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001285 *) Initial changes to the 'req' utility to allow request generation
1286 automation. This will allow an application to just generate a template
1287 file containing all the field values and have req construct the
1288 request.
1289
1290 Initial support for X509_ATTRIBUTE handling. Stacks of these are
1291 used all over the place including certificate requests and PKCS#7
1292 structures. They are currently handled manually where necessary with
1293 some primitive wrappers for PKCS#7. The new functions behave in a
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001294 manner analogous to the X509 extension functions: they allow
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001295 attributes to be looked up by NID and added.
1296
1297 Later something similar to the X509V3 code would be desirable to
1298 automatically handle the encoding, decoding and printing of the
1299 more complex types. The string types like challengePassword can
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001300 be handled by the string table functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001301
1302 Also modified the multi byte string table handling. Now there is
1303 a 'global mask' which masks out certain types. The table itself
1304 can use the flag STABLE_NO_MASK to ignore the mask setting: this
1305 is useful when for example there is only one permissible type
1306 (as in countryName) and using the mask might result in no valid
1307 types at all.
1308 [Steve Henson]
1309
Bodo Möllerca031092000-01-06 01:19:17 +00001310 *) Clean up 'Finished' handling, and add functions SSL_get_finished and
1311 SSL_get_peer_finished to allow applications to obtain the latest
1312 Finished messages sent to the peer or expected from the peer,
1313 respectively. (SSL_get_peer_finished is usually the Finished message
1314 actually received from the peer, otherwise the protocol will be aborted.)
1315
1316 As the Finished message are message digests of the complete handshake
1317 (with a total of 192 bits for TLS 1.0 and more for SSL 3.0), they can
1318 be used for external authentication procedures when the authentication
1319 provided by SSL/TLS is not desired or is not enough.
Bodo Möllerf2d9a322000-01-06 00:24:24 +00001320 [Bodo Moeller]
1321
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +00001322 *) Enhanced support for Alpha Linux is added. Now ./config checks if
1323 the host supports BWX extension and if Compaq C is present on the
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001324 $PATH. Just exploiting of the BWX extension results in 20-30%
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +00001325 performance kick for some algorithms, e.g. DES and RC4 to mention
1326 a couple. Compaq C in turn generates ~20% faster code for MD5 and
1327 SHA1.
1328 [Andy Polyakov]
1329
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +00001330 *) Add support for MS "fast SGC". This is arguably a violation of the
1331 SSL3/TLS protocol. Netscape SGC does two handshakes: the first with
1332 weak crypto and after checking the certificate is SGC a second one
1333 with strong crypto. MS SGC stops the first handshake after receiving
1334 the server certificate message and sends a second client hello. Since
1335 a server will typically do all the time consuming operations before
1336 expecting any further messages from the client (server key exchange
1337 is the most expensive) there is little difference between the two.
1338
1339 To get OpenSSL to support MS SGC we have to permit a second client
1340 hello message after we have sent server done. In addition we have to
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +00001341 reset the MAC if we do get this second client hello.
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +00001342 [Steve Henson]
1343
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +00001344 *) Add a function 'd2i_AutoPrivateKey()' this will automatically decide
1345 if a DER encoded private key is RSA or DSA traditional format. Changed
1346 d2i_PrivateKey_bio() to use it. This is only needed for the "traditional"
1347 format DER encoded private key. Newer code should use PKCS#8 format which
1348 has the key type encoded in the ASN1 structure. Added DER private key
1349 support to pkcs8 application.
1350 [Steve Henson]
1351
Bodo Möller47134b71999-12-29 17:43:03 +00001352 *) SSL 3/TLS 1 servers now don't request certificates when an anonymous
1353 ciphersuites has been selected (as required by the SSL 3/TLS 1
1354 specifications). Exception: When SSL_VERIFY_FAIL_IF_NO_PEER_CERT
1355 is set, we interpret this as a request to violate the specification
1356 (the worst that can happen is a handshake failure, and 'correct'
1357 behaviour would result in a handshake failure anyway).
1358 [Bodo Moeller]
1359
Bodo Möller45fd4db1999-12-29 14:29:32 +00001360 *) In SSL_CTX_add_session, take into account that there might be multiple
1361 SSL_SESSION structures with the same session ID (e.g. when two threads
1362 concurrently obtain them from an external cache).
1363 The internal cache can handle only one SSL_SESSION with a given ID,
1364 so if there's a conflict, we now throw out the old one to achieve
1365 consistency.
1366 [Bodo Moeller]
1367
Dr. Stephen Hensonf45f40f1999-12-29 02:59:18 +00001368 *) Add OIDs for idea and blowfish in CBC mode. This will allow both
1369 to be used in PKCS#5 v2.0 and S/MIME. Also add checking to
1370 some routines that use cipher OIDs: some ciphers do not have OIDs
1371 defined and so they cannot be used for S/MIME and PKCS#5 v2.0 for
1372 example.
1373 [Steve Henson]
1374
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +00001375 *) Simplify the trust setting structure and code. Now we just have
1376 two sequences of OIDs for trusted and rejected settings. These will
1377 typically have values the same as the extended key usage extension
1378 and any application specific purposes.
1379
1380 The trust checking code now has a default behaviour: it will just
1381 check for an object with the same NID as the passed id. Functions can
1382 be provided to override either the default behaviour or the behaviour
1383 for a given id. SSL client, server and email already have functions
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +00001384 in place for compatibility: they check the NID and also return "trusted"
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +00001385 if the certificate is self signed.
1386 [Steve Henson]
1387
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +00001388 *) Add d2i,i2d bio/fp functions for PrivateKey: these convert the
1389 traditional format into an EVP_PKEY structure.
1390 [Steve Henson]
1391
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +00001392 *) Add a password callback function PEM_cb() which either prompts for
1393 a password if usr_data is NULL or otherwise assumes it is a null
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +00001394 terminated password. Allow passwords to be passed on command line
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +00001395 environment or config files in a few more utilities.
1396 [Steve Henson]
1397
Dr. Stephen Henson525f51f1999-12-23 02:02:42 +00001398 *) Add a bunch of DER and PEM functions to handle PKCS#8 format private
1399 keys. Add some short names for PKCS#8 PBE algorithms and allow them
1400 to be specified on the command line for the pkcs8 and pkcs12 utilities.
1401 Update documentation.
1402 [Steve Henson]
1403
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +00001404 *) Support for ASN1 "NULL" type. This could be handled before by using
1405 ASN1_TYPE but there wasn't any function that would try to read a NULL
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001406 and produce an error if it couldn't. For compatibility we also have
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +00001407 ASN1_NULL_new() and ASN1_NULL_free() functions but these are faked and
1408 don't allocate anything because they don't need to.
1409 [Steve Henson]
1410
Andy Polyakov099f1b31999-12-19 16:17:45 +00001411 *) Initial support for MacOS is now provided. Examine INSTALL.MacOS
1412 for details.
1413 [Andy Polyakov, Roy Woods <roy@centicsystems.ca>]
1414
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +00001415 *) Rebuild of the memory allocation routines used by OpenSSL code and
1416 possibly others as well. The purpose is to make an interface that
1417 provide hooks so anyone can build a separate set of allocation and
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001418 deallocation routines to be used by OpenSSL, for example memory
1419 pool implementations, or something else, which was previously hard
1420 since Malloc(), Realloc() and Free() were defined as macros having
Richard Levittede73e392000-01-11 22:32:37 +00001421 the values malloc, realloc and free, respectively (except for Win32
1422 compilations). The same is provided for memory debugging code.
1423 OpenSSL already comes with functionality to find memory leaks, but
1424 this gives people a chance to debug other memory problems.
Richard Levitted8df48a1999-12-18 01:14:39 +00001425
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001426 With these changes, a new set of functions and macros have appeared:
1427
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +00001428 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() [F]
1429 CRYPTO_get_mem_debug_functions() [F]
1430 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options() [F]
1431 CRYPTO_dbg_get_options() [F]
1432 CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() [M]
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001433
1434 The memory debug functions are NULL by default, unless the library
1435 is compiled with CRYPTO_MDEBUG or friends is defined. If someone
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001436 wants to debug memory anyway, CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() (which
1437 gives the standard debugging functions that come with OpenSSL) or
1438 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() (tells OpenSSL to use functions
1439 provided by the library user) must be used. When the standard
1440 debugging functions are used, CRYPTO_dbg_set_options can be used to
1441 request additional information:
1442 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options(V_CYRPTO_MDEBUG_xxx) corresponds to setting
1443 the CRYPTO_MDEBUG_xxx macro when compiling the library.
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001444
1445 Also, things like CRYPTO_set_mem_functions will always give the
1446 expected result (the new set of functions is used for allocation
1447 and deallocation) at all times, regardless of platform and compiler
1448 options.
1449
1450 To finish it up, some functions that were never use in any other
1451 way than through macros have a new API and new semantic:
1452
1453 CRYPTO_dbg_malloc()
1454 CRYPTO_dbg_realloc()
1455 CRYPTO_dbg_free()
1456
1457 All macros of value have retained their old syntax.
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001458 [Richard Levitte and Bodo Moeller]
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +00001459
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2166641999-12-11 20:04:06 +00001460 *) Some S/MIME fixes. The OID for SMIMECapabilities was wrong, the
1461 ordering of SMIMECapabilities wasn't in "strength order" and there
1462 was a missing NULL in the AlgorithmIdentifier for the SHA1 signature
1463 algorithm.
1464 [Steve Henson]
1465
Dr. Stephen Hensond8223ef1999-12-10 13:46:48 +00001466 *) Some ASN1 types with illegal zero length encoding (INTEGER,
1467 ENUMERATED and OBJECT IDENTIFIER) choked the ASN1 routines.
1468 [Frans Heymans <fheymans@isaserver.be>, modified by Steve Henson]
1469
Dr. Stephen Henson5a9a4b21999-12-05 00:40:59 +00001470 *) Merge in my S/MIME library for OpenSSL. This provides a simple
1471 S/MIME API on top of the PKCS#7 code, a MIME parser (with enough
1472 functionality to handle multipart/signed properly) and a utility
1473 called 'smime' to call all this stuff. This is based on code I
1474 originally wrote for Celo who have kindly allowed it to be
1475 included in OpenSSL.
1476 [Steve Henson]
1477
Bodo Möllercddfe781999-12-03 20:24:21 +00001478 *) Add variants des_set_key_checked and des_set_key_unchecked of
1479 des_set_key (aka des_key_sched). Global variable des_check_key
1480 decides which of these is called by des_set_key; this way
1481 des_check_key behaves as it always did, but applications and
1482 the library itself, which was buggy for des_check_key == 1,
1483 have a cleaner way to pick the version they need.
1484 [Bodo Moeller]
1485
Dr. Stephen Henson21131f01999-12-03 03:46:18 +00001486 *) New function PKCS12_newpass() which changes the password of a
1487 PKCS12 structure.
1488 [Steve Henson]
1489
Dr. Stephen Hensondd413411999-12-02 02:33:56 +00001490 *) Modify X509_TRUST and X509_PURPOSE so it also uses a static and
1491 dynamic mix. In both cases the ids can be used as an index into the
1492 table. Also modified the X509_TRUST_add() and X509_PURPOSE_add()
1493 functions so they accept a list of the field values and the
1494 application doesn't need to directly manipulate the X509_TRUST
1495 structure.
1496 [Steve Henson]
1497
1498 *) Modify the ASN1_STRING_TABLE stuff so it also uses bsearch and doesn't
1499 need initialising.
1500 [Steve Henson]
1501
Dr. Stephen Henson08cba611999-12-01 01:49:46 +00001502 *) Modify the way the V3 extension code looks up extensions. This now
1503 works in a similar way to the object code: we have some "standard"
1504 extensions in a static table which is searched with OBJ_bsearch()
1505 and the application can add dynamic ones if needed. The file
1506 crypto/x509v3/ext_dat.h now has the info: this file needs to be
1507 updated whenever a new extension is added to the core code and kept
1508 in ext_nid order. There is a simple program 'tabtest.c' which checks
1509 this. New extensions are not added too often so this file can readily
1510 be maintained manually.
1511
1512 There are two big advantages in doing things this way. The extensions
1513 can be looked up immediately and no longer need to be "added" using
1514 X509V3_add_standard_extensions(): this function now does nothing.
1515 [Side note: I get *lots* of email saying the extension code doesn't
1516 work because people forget to call this function]
1517 Also no dynamic allocation is done unless new extensions are added:
1518 so if we don't add custom extensions there is no need to call
1519 X509V3_EXT_cleanup().
1520 [Steve Henson]
1521
Ben Lauriefea9afb1999-11-30 20:15:19 +00001522 *) Modify enc utility's salting as follows: make salting the default. Add a
1523 magic header, so unsalted files fail gracefully instead of just decrypting
1524 to garbage. This is because not salting is a big security hole, so people
1525 should be discouraged from doing it.
1526 [Ben Laurie]
1527
Dr. Stephen Henson98682321999-11-27 01:14:04 +00001528 *) Fixes and enhancements to the 'x509' utility. It allowed a message
1529 digest to be passed on the command line but it only used this
1530 parameter when signing a certificate. Modified so all relevant
1531 operations are affected by the digest parameter including the
1532 -fingerprint and -x509toreq options. Also -x509toreq choked if a
1533 DSA key was used because it didn't fix the digest.
1534 [Steve Henson]
1535
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001536 *) Initial certificate chain verify code. Currently tests the untrusted
1537 certificates for consistency with the verify purpose (which is set
1538 when the X509_STORE_CTX structure is set up) and checks the pathlength.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001539
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001540 There is a NO_CHAIN_VERIFY compilation option to keep the old behaviour:
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001541 this is because it will reject chains with invalid extensions whereas
1542 every previous version of OpenSSL and SSLeay made no checks at all.
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001543
1544 Trust code: checks the root CA for the relevant trust settings. Trust
1545 settings have an initial value consistent with the verify purpose: e.g.
1546 if the verify purpose is for SSL client use it expects the CA to be
1547 trusted for SSL client use. However the default value can be changed to
1548 permit custom trust settings: one example of this would be to only trust
1549 certificates from a specific "secure" set of CAs.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001550
1551 Also added X509_STORE_CTX_new() and X509_STORE_CTX_free() functions
1552 which should be used for version portability: especially since the
1553 verify structure is likely to change more often now.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001554
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001555 SSL integration. Add purpose and trust to SSL_CTX and SSL and functions
1556 to set them. If not set then assume SSL clients will verify SSL servers
1557 and vice versa.
1558
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001559 Two new options to the verify program: -untrusted allows a set of
1560 untrusted certificates to be passed in and -purpose which sets the
1561 intended purpose of the certificate. If a purpose is set then the
1562 new chain verify code is used to check extension consistency.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001563 [Steve Henson]
1564
1565 *) Support for the authority information access extension.
Dr. Stephen Henson6d3724d1999-11-23 18:50:28 +00001566 [Steve Henson]
1567
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001568 *) Modify RSA and DSA PEM read routines to transparently handle
1569 PKCS#8 format private keys. New *_PUBKEY_* functions that handle
1570 public keys in a format compatible with certificate
1571 SubjectPublicKeyInfo structures. Unfortunately there were already
1572 functions called *_PublicKey_* which used various odd formats so
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001573 these are retained for compatibility: however the DSA variants were
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001574 never in a public release so they have been deleted. Changed dsa/rsa
1575 utilities to handle the new format: note no releases ever handled public
1576 keys so we should be OK.
1577
1578 The primary motivation for this change is to avoid the same fiasco
1579 that dogs private keys: there are several incompatible private key
1580 formats some of which are standard and some OpenSSL specific and
1581 require various evil hacks to allow partial transparent handling and
1582 even then it doesn't work with DER formats. Given the option anything
1583 other than PKCS#8 should be dumped: but the other formats have to
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001584 stay in the name of compatibility.
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001585
1586 With public keys and the benefit of hindsight one standard format
1587 is used which works with EVP_PKEY, RSA or DSA structures: though
1588 it clearly returns an error if you try to read the wrong kind of key.
1589
1590 Added a -pubkey option to the 'x509' utility to output the public key.
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001591 Also rename the EVP_PKEY_get_*() to EVP_PKEY_rget_*()
1592 (renamed to EVP_PKEY_get1_*() in the OpenSSL 0.9.5 release) and add
1593 EVP_PKEY_rset_*() functions (renamed to EVP_PKEY_set1_*())
1594 that do the same as the EVP_PKEY_assign_*() except they up the
1595 reference count of the added key (they don't "swallow" the
1596 supplied key).
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001597 [Steve Henson]
1598
1599 *) Fixes to crypto/x509/by_file.c the code to read in certificates and
1600 CRLs would fail if the file contained no certificates or no CRLs:
1601 added a new function to read in both types and return the number
1602 read: this means that if none are read it will be an error. The
1603 DER versions of the certificate and CRL reader would always fail
1604 because it isn't possible to mix certificates and CRLs in DER format
1605 without choking one or the other routine. Changed this to just read
1606 a certificate: this is the best we can do. Also modified the code
1607 in apps/verify.c to take notice of return codes: it was previously
1608 attempting to read in certificates from NULL pointers and ignoring
1609 any errors: this is one reason why the cert and CRL reader seemed
1610 to work. It doesn't check return codes from the default certificate
1611 routines: these may well fail if the certificates aren't installed.
1612 [Steve Henson]
1613
Dr. Stephen Hensona716d721999-11-19 02:19:58 +00001614 *) Code to support otherName option in GeneralName.
1615 [Steve Henson]
1616
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001617 *) First update to verify code. Change the verify utility
1618 so it warns if it is passed a self signed certificate:
1619 for consistency with the normal behaviour. X509_verify
1620 has been modified to it will now verify a self signed
1621 certificate if *exactly* the same certificate appears
1622 in the store: it was previously impossible to trust a
1623 single self signed certificate. This means that:
1624 openssl verify ss.pem
1625 now gives a warning about a self signed certificate but
1626 openssl verify -CAfile ss.pem ss.pem
1627 is OK.
1628 [Steve Henson]
1629
Bodo Möllerb1fe6ca1999-11-16 23:15:41 +00001630 *) For servers, store verify_result in SSL_SESSION data structure
1631 (and add it to external session representation).
1632 This is needed when client certificate verifications fails,
1633 but an application-provided verification callback (set by
1634 SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback) allows accepting the session
1635 anyway (i.e. leaves x509_store_ctx->error != X509_V_OK
1636 but returns 1): When the session is reused, we have to set
1637 ssl->verify_result to the appropriate error code to avoid
1638 security holes.
1639 [Bodo Moeller, problem pointed out by Lutz Jaenicke]
1640
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001641 *) Fix a bug in the new PKCS#7 code: it didn't consider the
1642 case in PKCS7_dataInit() where the signed PKCS7 structure
1643 didn't contain any existing data because it was being created.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001644 [Po-Cheng Chen <pocheng@nst.com.tw>, slightly modified by Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001645
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd699ac1999-11-16 02:49:25 +00001646 *) Add a salt to the key derivation routines in enc.c. This
1647 forms the first 8 bytes of the encrypted file. Also add a
1648 -S option to allow a salt to be input on the command line.
1649 [Steve Henson]
1650
Dr. Stephen Hensone947f391999-11-16 00:56:03 +00001651 *) New function X509_cmp(). Oddly enough there wasn't a function
1652 to compare two certificates. We do this by working out the SHA1
1653 hash and comparing that. X509_cmp() will be needed by the trust
1654 code.
1655 [Steve Henson]
1656
Bodo Möller07e6dbd2000-01-28 21:26:30 +00001657 *) SSL_get1_session() is like SSL_get_session(), but increments
1658 the reference count in the SSL_SESSION returned.
Mark J. Coxb7cfcfb1999-11-15 16:31:31 +00001659 [Geoff Thorpe <geoff@eu.c2.net>]
1660
Dr. Stephen Henson06556a11999-11-14 23:10:50 +00001661 *) Fix for 'req': it was adding a null to request attributes.
1662 Also change the X509_LOOKUP and X509_INFO code to handle
1663 certificate auxiliary information.
1664 [Steve Henson]
1665
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001666 *) Add support for 40 and 64 bit RC2 and RC4 algorithms: document
1667 the 'enc' command.
1668 [Steve Henson]
1669
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001670 *) Add the possibility to add extra information to the memory leak
1671 detecting output, to form tracebacks, showing from where each
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001672 allocation was originated: CRYPTO_push_info("constant string") adds
1673 the string plus current file name and line number to a per-thread
1674 stack, CRYPTO_pop_info() does the obvious, CRYPTO_remove_all_info()
1675 is like calling CYRPTO_pop_info() until the stack is empty.
1676 Also updated memory leak detection code to be multi-thread-safe.
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001677 [Richard Levitte]
1678
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001679 *) Add options -text and -noout to pkcs7 utility and delete the
Dr. Stephen Henson954ef7e1999-11-12 01:42:25 +00001680 encryption options which never did anything. Update docs.
1681 [Steve Henson]
1682
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf298111999-11-11 18:41:31 +00001683 *) Add options to some of the utilities to allow the pass phrase
1684 to be included on either the command line (not recommended on
1685 OSes like Unix) or read from the environment. Update the
1686 manpages and fix a few bugs.
1687 [Steve Henson]
1688
Dr. Stephen Hensonaba3e651999-11-10 02:52:17 +00001689 *) Add a few manpages for some of the openssl commands.
1690 [Steve Henson]
1691
Dr. Stephen Hensona0ad17b1999-11-08 13:58:08 +00001692 *) Fix the -revoke option in ca. It was freeing up memory twice,
1693 leaking and not finding already revoked certificates.
1694 [Steve Henson]
1695
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001696 *) Extensive changes to support certificate auxiliary information.
1697 This involves the use of X509_CERT_AUX structure and X509_AUX
1698 functions. An X509_AUX function such as PEM_read_X509_AUX()
1699 can still read in a certificate file in the usual way but it
1700 will also read in any additional "auxiliary information". By
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001701 doing things this way a fair degree of compatibility can be
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001702 retained: existing certificates can have this information added
1703 using the new 'x509' options.
1704
1705 Current auxiliary information includes an "alias" and some trust
1706 settings. The trust settings will ultimately be used in enhanced
1707 certificate chain verification routines: currently a certificate
1708 can only be trusted if it is self signed and then it is trusted
1709 for all purposes.
1710 [Steve Henson]
1711
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001712 *) Fix assembler for Alpha (tested only on DEC OSF not Linux or *BSD).
1713 The problem was that one of the replacement routines had not been working
1714 since SSLeay releases. For now the offending routine has been replaced
1715 with non-optimised assembler. Even so, this now gives around 95%
1716 performance improvement for 1024 bit RSA signs.
Mark J. Coxce2c95b1999-11-03 14:10:10 +00001717 [Mark Cox]
1718
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001719 *) Hack to fix PKCS#7 decryption when used with some unorthodox RC2
1720 handling. Most clients have the effective key size in bits equal to
1721 the key length in bits: so a 40 bit RC2 key uses a 40 bit (5 byte) key.
1722 A few however don't do this and instead use the size of the decrypted key
1723 to determine the RC2 key length and the AlgorithmIdentifier to determine
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001724 the effective key length. In this case the effective key length can still
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001725 be 40 bits but the key length can be 168 bits for example. This is fixed
1726 by manually forcing an RC2 key into the EVP_PKEY structure because the
1727 EVP code can't currently handle unusual RC2 key sizes: it always assumes
1728 the key length and effective key length are equal.
1729 [Steve Henson]
1730
Dr. Stephen Henson74400f71999-10-27 00:15:11 +00001731 *) Add a bunch of functions that should simplify the creation of
1732 X509_NAME structures. Now you should be able to do:
1733 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, "CN", MBSTRING_ASC, "Steve", -1, -1, 0);
1734 and have it automatically work out the correct field type and fill in
1735 the structures. The more adventurous can try:
1736 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, field, MBSTRING_UTF8, str, -1, -1, 0);
1737 and it will (hopefully) work out the correct multibyte encoding.
1738 [Steve Henson]
1739
1740 *) Change the 'req' utility to use the new field handling and multibyte
1741 copy routines. Before the DN field creation was handled in an ad hoc
1742 way in req, ca, and x509 which was rather broken and didn't support
1743 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings. Since some software doesn't implement
1744 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings yet, they can be enabled using the config file
1745 using the dirstring_type option. See the new comment in the default
1746 openssl.cnf for more info.
1747 [Steve Henson]
1748
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001749 *) Make crypto/rand/md_rand.c more robust:
Bodo Möller62ac2931999-10-26 16:26:48 +00001750 - Assure unique random numbers after fork().
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001751 - Make sure that concurrent threads access the global counter and
1752 md serializably so that we never lose entropy in them
1753 or use exactly the same state in multiple threads.
1754 Access to the large state is not always serializable because
1755 the additional locking could be a performance killer, and
1756 md should be large enough anyway.
1757 [Bodo Moeller]
1758
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001759 *) New file apps/app_rand.c with commonly needed functionality
1760 for handling the random seed file.
1761
1762 Use the random seed file in some applications that previously did not:
1763 ca,
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001764 dsaparam -genkey (which also ignored its '-rand' option),
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001765 s_client,
1766 s_server,
1767 x509 (when signing).
1768 Except on systems with /dev/urandom, it is crucial to have a random
1769 seed file at least for key creation, DSA signing, and for DH exchanges;
Bodo Möller99e87561999-10-26 11:19:42 +00001770 for RSA signatures we could do without one.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001771
1772 gendh and gendsa (unlike genrsa) used to read only the first byte
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001773 of each file listed in the '-rand' option. The function as previously
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001774 found in genrsa is now in app_rand.c and is used by all programs
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001775 that support '-rand'.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001776 [Bodo Moeller]
1777
1778 *) In RAND_write_file, use mode 0600 for creating files;
1779 don't just chmod when it may be too late.
1780 [Bodo Moeller]
1781
1782 *) Report an error from X509_STORE_load_locations
1783 when X509_LOOKUP_load_file or X509_LOOKUP_add_dir failed.
1784 [Bill Perry]
1785
Dr. Stephen Henson462f79e1999-10-21 13:20:49 +00001786 *) New function ASN1_mbstring_copy() this copies a string in either
1787 ASCII, Unicode, Universal (4 bytes per character) or UTF8 format
1788 into an ASN1_STRING type. A mask of permissible types is passed
1789 and it chooses the "minimal" type to use or an error if not type
1790 is suitable.
1791 [Steve Henson]
1792
Dr. Stephen Henson08e9c1a1999-10-20 01:50:23 +00001793 *) Add function equivalents to the various macros in asn1.h. The old
1794 macros are retained with an M_ prefix. Code inside the library can
1795 use the M_ macros. External code (including the openssl utility)
1796 should *NOT* in order to be "shared library friendly".
1797 [Steve Henson]
1798
Dr. Stephen Henson673b1021999-10-13 01:11:56 +00001799 *) Add various functions that can check a certificate's extensions
1800 to see if it usable for various purposes such as SSL client,
1801 server or S/MIME and CAs of these types. This is currently
1802 VERY EXPERIMENTAL but will ultimately be used for certificate chain
1803 verification. Also added a -purpose flag to x509 utility to
1804 print out all the purposes.
1805 [Steve Henson]
1806
Dr. Stephen Henson56a3fec1999-10-11 01:30:04 +00001807 *) Add a CRYPTO_EX_DATA to X509 certificate structure and associated
1808 functions.
1809 [Steve Henson]
1810
Dr. Stephen Henson4654ef91999-10-09 02:54:10 +00001811 *) New X509V3_{X509,CRL,REVOKED}_get_d2i() functions. These will search
1812 for, obtain and decode and extension and obtain its critical flag.
1813 This allows all the necessary extension code to be handled in a
1814 single function call.
1815 [Steve Henson]
1816
Andy Polyakov7e102e21999-10-07 12:10:26 +00001817 *) RC4 tune-up featuring 30-40% performance improvement on most RISC
1818 platforms. See crypto/rc4/rc4_enc.c for further details.
1819 [Andy Polyakov]
1820
Dr. Stephen Hensond71c6bc1999-10-05 13:10:21 +00001821 *) New -noout option to asn1parse. This causes no output to be produced
1822 its main use is when combined with -strparse and -out to extract data
1823 from a file (which may not be in ASN.1 format).
1824 [Steve Henson]
1825
Dr. Stephen Henson2d681b71999-10-05 12:57:50 +00001826 *) Fix for pkcs12 program. It was hashing an invalid certificate pointer
1827 when producing the local key id.
1828 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1829
Dr. Stephen Henson3908cdf1999-10-04 23:56:06 +00001830 *) New option -dhparam in s_server. This allows a DH parameter file to be
1831 stated explicitly. If it is not stated then it tries the first server
1832 certificate file. The previous behaviour hard coded the filename
1833 "server.pem".
1834 [Steve Henson]
1835
Dr. Stephen Henson3ea23631999-10-04 21:17:47 +00001836 *) Add -pubin and -pubout options to the rsa and dsa commands. These allow
1837 a public key to be input or output. For example:
1838 openssl rsa -in key.pem -pubout -out pubkey.pem
1839 Also added necessary DSA public key functions to handle this.
1840 [Steve Henson]
1841
Dr. Stephen Henson393f2c61999-10-04 12:08:59 +00001842 *) Fix so PKCS7_dataVerify() doesn't crash if no certificates are contained
1843 in the message. This was handled by allowing
1844 X509_find_by_issuer_and_serial() to tolerate a NULL passed to it.
1845 [Steve Henson, reported by Sampo Kellomaki <sampo@mail.neuronio.pt>]
1846
1847 *) Fix for bug in d2i_ASN1_bytes(): other ASN1 functions add an extra null
1848 to the end of the strings whereas this didn't. This would cause problems
1849 if strings read with d2i_ASN1_bytes() were later modified.
1850 [Steve Henson, reported by Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
1851
Dr. Stephen Henson4579dd51999-10-02 13:33:06 +00001852 *) Fix for base64 decode bug. When a base64 bio reads only one line of
1853 data and it contains EOF it will end up returning an error. This is
1854 caused by input 46 bytes long. The cause is due to the way base64
1855 BIOs find the start of base64 encoded data. They do this by trying a
1856 trial decode on each line until they find one that works. When they
1857 do a flag is set and it starts again knowing it can pass all the
1858 data directly through the decoder. Unfortunately it doesn't reset
1859 the context it uses. This means that if EOF is reached an attempt
1860 is made to pass two EOFs through the context and this causes the
1861 resulting error. This can also cause other problems as well. As is
1862 usual with these problems it takes *ages* to find and the fix is
1863 trivial: move one line.
1864 [Steve Henson, reported by ian@uns.ns.ac.yu (Ivan Nejgebauer) ]
1865
Dr. Stephen Henson06f45361999-09-20 22:09:17 +00001866 *) Ugly workaround to get s_client and s_server working under Windows. The
1867 old code wouldn't work because it needed to select() on sockets and the
1868 tty (for keypresses and to see if data could be written). Win32 only
1869 supports select() on sockets so we select() with a 1s timeout on the
1870 sockets and then see if any characters are waiting to be read, if none
1871 are present then we retry, we also assume we can always write data to
1872 the tty. This isn't nice because the code then blocks until we've
1873 received a complete line of data and it is effectively polling the
1874 keyboard at 1s intervals: however it's quite a bit better than not
1875 working at all :-) A dedicated Windows application might handle this
1876 with an event loop for example.
1877 [Steve Henson]
1878
Dr. Stephen Henson1c800191999-09-18 22:37:44 +00001879 *) Enhance RSA_METHOD structure. Now there are two extra methods, rsa_sign
1880 and rsa_verify. When the RSA_FLAGS_SIGN_VER option is set these functions
1881 will be called when RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() are used. This is useful
1882 if rsa_pub_dec() and rsa_priv_enc() equivalents are not available.
1883 For this to work properly RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt()
1884 should *not* be used: RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() must be used instead.
1885 This necessitated the support of an extra signature type NID_md5_sha1
1886 for SSL signatures and modifications to the SSL library to use it instead
1887 of calling RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt().
1888 [Steve Henson]
1889
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00001890 *) Add new -verify -CAfile and -CApath options to the crl program, these
1891 will lookup a CRL issuers certificate and verify the signature in a
1892 similar way to the verify program. Tidy up the crl program so it
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001893 no longer accesses structures directly. Make the ASN1 CRL parsing a bit
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00001894 less strict. It will now permit CRL extensions even if it is not
1895 a V2 CRL: this will allow it to tolerate some broken CRLs.
1896 [Steve Henson]
1897
Bodo Möller396f6311999-09-08 21:58:13 +00001898 *) Initialize all non-automatic variables each time one of the openssl
1899 sub-programs is started (this is necessary as they may be started
1900 multiple times from the "OpenSSL>" prompt).
1901 [Lennart Bang, Bodo Moeller]
1902
Dr. Stephen Henson4a61a641999-09-08 18:02:25 +00001903 *) Preliminary compilation option RSA_NULL which disables RSA crypto without
1904 removing all other RSA functionality (this is what NO_RSA does). This
1905 is so (for example) those in the US can disable those operations covered
1906 by the RSA patent while allowing storage and parsing of RSA keys and RSA
1907 key generation.
1908 [Steve Henson]
1909
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +00001910 *) Non-copying interface to BIO pairs.
Bodo Möller6f7af151999-09-10 14:03:21 +00001911 (still largely untested)
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +00001912 [Bodo Moeller]
1913
Dr. Stephen Hensona785abc1999-09-07 12:16:29 +00001914 *) New function ANS1_tag2str() to convert an ASN1 tag to a descriptive
1915 ASCII string. This was handled independently in various places before.
1916 [Steve Henson]
1917
Dr. Stephen Hensonaef838f1999-09-04 17:19:55 +00001918 *) New functions UTF8_getc() and UTF8_putc() that parse and generate
1919 UTF8 strings a character at a time.
1920 [Steve Henson]
1921
Bodo Möller074309b1999-09-03 16:33:11 +00001922 *) Use client_version from client hello to select the protocol
1923 (s23_srvr.c) and for RSA client key exchange verification
1924 (s3_srvr.c), as required by the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 specifications.
1925 [Bodo Moeller]
1926
Dr. Stephen Henson8ce97161999-09-03 01:08:34 +00001927 *) Add various utility functions to handle SPKACs, these were previously
1928 handled by poking round in the structure internals. Added new function
1929 NETSCAPE_SPKI_print() to print out SPKAC and a new utility 'spkac' to
1930 print, verify and generate SPKACs. Based on an original idea from
1931 Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@comune.modena.it> but extensively modified.
1932 [Steve Henson]
1933
Andy Polyakov2d4287d1999-08-28 13:18:25 +00001934 *) RIPEMD160 is operational on all platforms and is back in 'make test'.
1935 [Andy Polyakov]
1936
Dr. Stephen Henson87a25f91999-08-27 00:08:17 +00001937 *) Allow the config file extension section to be overwritten on the
1938 command line. Based on an original idea from Massimiliano Pala
1939 <madwolf@comune.modena.it>. The new option is called -extensions
1940 and can be applied to ca, req and x509. Also -reqexts to override
1941 the request extensions in req and -crlexts to override the crl extensions
1942 in ca.
1943 [Steve Henson]
1944
Dr. Stephen Hensonf9150e51999-08-25 23:18:23 +00001945 *) Add new feature to the SPKAC handling in ca. Now you can include
1946 the same field multiple times by preceding it by "XXXX." for example:
1947 1.OU="Unit name 1"
1948 2.OU="Unit name 2"
1949 this is the same syntax as used in the req config file.
1950 [Steve Henson]
1951
Dr. Stephen Hensonc79b16e1999-08-25 16:59:26 +00001952 *) Allow certificate extensions to be added to certificate requests. These
1953 are specified in a 'req_extensions' option of the req section of the
1954 config file. They can be printed out with the -text option to req but
1955 are otherwise ignored at present.
1956 [Steve Henson]
1957
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00001958 *) Fix a horrible bug in enc_read() in crypto/evp/bio_enc.c: if the first
Bodo Möller0f7e6fe1999-09-24 20:24:24 +00001959 data read consists of only the final block it would not decrypted because
Dr. Stephen Henson7b65c321999-08-24 13:21:35 +00001960 EVP_CipherUpdate() would correctly report zero bytes had been decrypted.
1961 A misplaced 'break' also meant the decrypted final block might not be
1962 copied until the next read.
1963 [Steve Henson]
1964
Dr. Stephen Henson13066ce1999-08-23 23:11:32 +00001965 *) Initial support for DH_METHOD. Again based on RSA_METHOD. Also added
1966 a few extra parameters to the DH structure: these will be useful if
1967 for example we want the value of 'q' or implement X9.42 DH.
1968 [Steve Henson]
1969
Dr. Stephen Hensonc0711f71999-08-22 17:57:38 +00001970 *) Initial support for DSA_METHOD. This is based on the RSA_METHOD and
1971 provides hooks that allow the default DSA functions or functions on a
1972 "per key" basis to be replaced. This allows hardware acceleration and
1973 hardware key storage to be handled without major modification to the
1974 library. Also added low level modexp hooks and CRYPTO_EX structure and
1975 associated functions.
1976 [Steve Henson]
1977
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +00001978 *) Add a new flag to memory BIOs, BIO_FLAG_MEM_RDONLY. This marks the BIO
1979 as "read only": it can't be written to and the buffer it points to will
1980 not be freed. Reading from a read only BIO is much more efficient than
1981 a normal memory BIO. This was added because there are several times when
1982 an area of memory needs to be read from a BIO. The previous method was
1983 to create a memory BIO and write the data to it, this results in two
1984 copies of the data and an O(n^2) reading algorithm. There is a new
1985 function BIO_new_mem_buf() which creates a read only memory BIO from
1986 an area of memory. Also modified the PKCS#7 routines to use read only
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001987 memory BIOs.
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +00001988 [Steve Henson]
1989
Bodo Möllerde1915e1999-08-18 17:14:42 +00001990 *) Bugfix: ssl23_get_client_hello did not work properly when called in
1991 state SSL23_ST_SR_CLNT_HELLO_B, i.e. when the first 7 bytes of
1992 a SSLv2-compatible client hello for SSLv3 or TLSv1 could be read,
1993 but a retry condition occured while trying to read the rest.
1994 [Bodo Moeller]
1995
Dr. Stephen Hensonc6c34501999-08-17 12:58:01 +00001996 *) The PKCS7_ENC_CONTENT_new() function was setting the content type as
1997 NID_pkcs7_encrypted by default: this was wrong since this should almost
1998 always be NID_pkcs7_data. Also modified the PKCS7_set_type() to handle
1999 the encrypted data type: this is a more sensible place to put it and it
2000 allows the PKCS#12 code to be tidied up that duplicated this
2001 functionality.
2002 [Steve Henson]
2003
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00002004 *) Changed obj_dat.pl script so it takes its input and output files on
2005 the command line. This should avoid shell escape redirection problems
2006 under Win32.
2007 [Steve Henson]
2008
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +00002009 *) Initial support for certificate extension requests, these are included
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00002010 in things like Xenroll certificate requests. Included functions to allow
2011 extensions to be obtained and added.
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +00002012 [Steve Henson]
2013
Bodo Möller1b1a6e71999-08-09 13:01:48 +00002014 *) -crlf option to s_client and s_server for sending newlines as
2015 CRLF (as required by many protocols).
2016 [Bodo Moeller]
2017
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +00002018 Changes between 0.9.3a and 0.9.4 [09 Aug 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +00002019
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +00002020 *) Install libRSAglue.a when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +00002021 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002022
Ralf S. Engelschall96395151999-08-08 10:15:43 +00002023 *) A few more ``#ifndef NO_FP_API / #endif'' pairs for consistency.
2024 [Andrija Antonijevic <TheAntony2@bigfoot.com>]
2025
Dr. Stephen Hensoned7f60f1999-08-06 21:47:09 +00002026 *) Fix -startdate and -enddate (which was missing) arguments to 'ca'
2027 program.
2028 [Steve Henson]
2029
Bodo Möller48c843c1999-08-05 11:50:18 +00002030 *) New function DSA_dup_DH, which duplicates DSA parameters/keys as
2031 DH parameters/keys (q is lost during that conversion, but the resulting
2032 DH parameters contain its length).
2033
2034 For 1024-bit p, DSA_generate_parameters followed by DSA_dup_DH is
2035 much faster than DH_generate_parameters (which creates parameters
2036 where p = 2*q + 1), and also the smaller q makes DH computations
2037 much more efficient (160-bit exponentiation instead of 1024-bit
2038 exponentiation); so this provides a convenient way to support DHE
2039 ciphersuites in SSL/TLS servers (see ssl/ssltest.c). It is of
2040 utter importance to use
2041 SSL_CTX_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
2042 or
2043 SSL_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
2044 when such DH parameters are used, because otherwise small subgroup
2045 attacks may become possible!
2046 [Bodo Moeller]
2047
2048 *) Avoid memory leak in i2d_DHparams.
2049 [Bodo Moeller]
2050
Dr. Stephen Henson922180d1999-07-30 01:12:46 +00002051 *) Allow the -k option to be used more than once in the enc program:
2052 this allows the same encrypted message to be read by multiple recipients.
2053 [Steve Henson]
2054
Dr. Stephen Henson3e3d2ea1999-07-27 22:22:58 +00002055 *) New function OBJ_obj2txt(buf, buf_len, a, no_name), this converts
2056 an ASN1_OBJECT to a text string. If the "no_name" parameter is set then
2057 it will always use the numerical form of the OID, even if it has a short
2058 or long name.
2059 [Steve Henson]
2060
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00002061 *) Added an extra RSA flag: RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY. Previously the rsa_mod_exp
2062 method only got called if p,q,dmp1,dmq1,iqmp components were present,
2063 otherwise bn_mod_exp was called. In the case of hardware keys for example
2064 no private key components need be present and it might store extra data
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00002065 in the RSA structure, which cannot be accessed from bn_mod_exp.
2066 By setting RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY rsa_mod_exp will always be called for
2067 private key operations.
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00002068 [Steve Henson]
2069
Andy Polyakova0618e31999-07-25 15:13:49 +00002070 *) Added support for SPARC Linux.
2071 [Andy Polyakov]
2072
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002073 *) pem_password_cb function type incompatibly changed from
2074 typedef int pem_password_cb(char *buf, int size, int rwflag);
2075 to
2076 ....(char *buf, int size, int rwflag, void *userdata);
2077 so that applications can pass data to their callbacks:
2078 The PEM[_ASN1]_{read,write}... functions and macros now take an
2079 additional void * argument, which is just handed through whenever
2080 the password callback is called.
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00002081 [Damien Miller <dmiller@ilogic.com.au>; tiny changes by Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002082
2083 New function SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata.
2084
2085 Compatibility note: As many C implementations push function arguments
2086 onto the stack in reverse order, the new library version is likely to
2087 interoperate with programs that have been compiled with the old
2088 pem_password_cb definition (PEM_whatever takes some data that
2089 happens to be on the stack as its last argument, and the callback
2090 just ignores this garbage); but there is no guarantee whatsoever that
2091 this will work.
Bodo Möller0cceb1c1999-05-30 23:54:52 +00002092
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +00002093 *) The -DPLATFORM="\"$(PLATFORM)\"" definition and the similar -DCFLAGS=...
2094 (both in crypto/Makefile.ssl for use by crypto/cversion.c) caused
2095 problems not only on Windows, but also on some Unix platforms.
Bodo Möller2e0fc871999-07-27 09:10:36 +00002096 To avoid problematic command lines, these definitions are now in an
Bodo Möller57119941999-07-29 12:57:23 +00002097 auto-generated file crypto/buildinf.h (created by crypto/Makefile.ssl
2098 for standard "make" builds, by util/mk1mf.pl for "mk1mf" builds).
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +00002099 [Bodo Moeller]
2100
Andy Polyakov73634551999-07-20 15:50:20 +00002101 *) MIPS III/IV assembler module is reimplemented.
2102 [Andy Polyakov]
2103
Ulf Möller64344501999-07-16 00:50:45 +00002104 *) More DES library cleanups: remove references to srand/rand and
2105 delete an unused file.
2106 [Ulf Möller]
2107
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +00002108 *) Add support for the the free Netwide assembler (NASM) under Win32,
2109 since not many people have MASM (ml) and it can be hard to obtain.
2110 This is currently experimental but it seems to work OK and pass all
2111 the tests. Check out INSTALL.W32 for info.
2112 [Steve Henson]
2113
Bodo Möller50596581999-07-12 17:15:42 +00002114 *) Fix memory leaks in s3_clnt.c: All non-anonymous SSL3/TLS1 connections
2115 without temporary keys kept an extra copy of the server key,
2116 and connections with temporary keys did not free everything in case
2117 of an error.
2118 [Bodo Moeller]
2119
Bodo Möller03cd4941999-07-11 22:00:55 +00002120 *) New function RSA_check_key and new openssl rsa option -check
2121 for verifying the consistency of RSA keys.
2122 [Ulf Moeller, Bodo Moeller]
2123
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +00002124 *) Various changes to make Win32 compile work:
2125 1. Casts to avoid "loss of data" warnings in p5_crpt2.c
2126 2. Change unsigned int to int in b_dump.c to avoid "signed/unsigned
2127 comparison" warnings.
2128 3. Add sk_<TYPE>_sort to DEF file generator and do make update.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +00002129 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +00002130
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5139391999-07-11 12:40:46 +00002131 *) Add a debugging option to PKCS#5 v2 key generation function: when
2132 you #define DEBUG_PKCS5V2 passwords, salts, iteration counts and
2133 derived keys are printed to stderr.
2134 [Steve Henson]
2135
Dr. Stephen Henson0ab8beb1999-07-11 12:30:55 +00002136 *) Copy the flags in ASN1_STRING_dup().
2137 [Roman E. Pavlov <pre@mo.msk.ru>]
2138
Dr. Stephen Hensonf7daafa1999-07-11 01:48:21 +00002139 *) The x509 application mishandled signing requests containing DSA
2140 keys when the signing key was also DSA and the parameters didn't match.
2141
2142 It was supposed to omit the parameters when they matched the signing key:
2143 the verifying software was then supposed to automatically use the CA's
2144 parameters if they were absent from the end user certificate.
2145
2146 Omitting parameters is no longer recommended. The test was also
2147 the wrong way round! This was probably due to unusual behaviour in
2148 EVP_cmp_parameters() which returns 1 if the parameters match.
2149 This meant that parameters were omitted when they *didn't* match and
2150 the certificate was useless. Certificates signed with 'ca' didn't have
2151 this bug.
2152 [Steve Henson, reported by Doug Erickson <Doug.Erickson@Part.NET>]
2153
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00002154 *) Memory leak checking (-DCRYPTO_MDEBUG) had some problems.
2155 The interface is as follows:
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00002156 Applications can use
2157 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ON) aka MemCheck_start(),
2158 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_OFF) aka MemCheck_stop();
2159 "off" is now the default.
2160 The library internally uses
2161 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_DISABLE) aka MemCheck_off(),
2162 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ENABLE) aka MemCheck_on()
2163 to disable memory-checking temporarily.
2164
2165 Some inconsistent states that previously were possible (and were
2166 even the default) are now avoided.
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00002167
2168 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_TIME is new and additionally stores the current time
2169 with each memory chunk allocated; this is occasionally more helpful
2170 than just having a counter.
Bodo Möllere3911161999-07-19 10:36:10 +00002171
2172 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_THREAD is also new and adds the thread ID.
2173
2174 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_ALL enables all of the above, plus any future
2175 extensions.
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00002176 [Bodo Moeller]
2177
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00002178 *) Introduce "mode" for SSL structures (with defaults in SSL_CTX),
2179 which largely parallels "options", but is for changing API behaviour,
2180 whereas "options" are about protocol behaviour.
Bodo Möller9c962481999-07-19 12:59:12 +00002181 Initial "mode" flags are:
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00002182
2183 SSL_MODE_ENABLE_PARTIAL_WRITE Allow SSL_write to report success when
2184 a single record has been written.
2185 SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER Don't insist that SSL_write
2186 retries use the same buffer location.
2187 (But all of the contents must be
2188 copied!)
2189 [Bodo Moeller]
2190
2191 *) Bugfix: SSL_set_mode ignored its parameter, only SSL_CTX_set_mode
2192 worked.
2193
Ulf Möller5271ebd1999-06-30 00:42:56 +00002194 *) Fix problems with no-hmac etc.
2195 [Ulf Möller, pointed out by Brian Wellington <bwelling@tislabs.com>]
2196
Dr. Stephen Hensonce8b2571999-06-29 22:22:42 +00002197 *) New functions RSA_get_default_method(), RSA_set_method() and
2198 RSA_get_method(). These allows replacement of RSA_METHODs without having
2199 to mess around with the internals of an RSA structure.
2200 [Steve Henson]
2201
Bodo Möller9c729e01999-06-25 14:04:10 +00002202 *) Fix memory leaks in DSA_do_sign and DSA_is_prime.
2203 Also really enable memory leak checks in openssl.c and in some
2204 test programs.
2205 [Chad C. Mulligan, Bodo Moeller]
2206
Dr. Stephen Henson034292a1999-06-24 01:50:27 +00002207 *) Fix a bug in d2i_ASN1_INTEGER() and i2d_ASN1_INTEGER() which can mess
2208 up the length of negative integers. This has now been simplified to just
2209 store the length when it is first determined and use it later, rather
2210 than trying to keep track of where data is copied and updating it to
2211 point to the end.
2212 [Steve Henson, reported by Brien Wheeler
2213 <bwheeler@authentica-security.com>]
2214
Dr. Stephen Henson170afce1999-06-22 13:33:22 +00002215 *) Add a new function PKCS7_signatureVerify. This allows the verification
2216 of a PKCS#7 signature but with the signing certificate passed to the
2217 function itself. This contrasts with PKCS7_dataVerify which assumes the
2218 certificate is present in the PKCS#7 structure. This isn't always the
2219 case: certificates can be omitted from a PKCS#7 structure and be
2220 distributed by "out of band" means (such as a certificate database).
2221 [Steve Henson]
2222
Dr. Stephen Hensondbd665c1999-06-22 01:38:31 +00002223 *) Complete the PEM_* macros with DECLARE_PEM versions to replace the
2224 function prototypes in pem.h, also change util/mkdef.pl to add the
2225 necessary function names.
2226 [Steve Henson]
2227
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00002228 *) mk1mf.pl (used by Windows builds) did not properly read the
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00002229 options set by Configure in the top level Makefile, and Configure
Bodo Möller975d3dc1999-07-09 13:02:14 +00002230 was not even able to write more than one option correctly.
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00002231 Fixed, now "no-idea no-rc5 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG" etc. works as intended.
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00002232 [Bodo Moeller]
2233
Dr. Stephen Henson8623f691999-06-20 17:36:11 +00002234 *) New functions CONF_load_bio() and CONF_load_fp() to allow a config
2235 file to be loaded from a BIO or FILE pointer. The BIO version will
2236 for example allow memory BIOs to contain config info.
2237 [Steve Henson]
2238
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00002239 *) New function "CRYPTO_num_locks" that returns CRYPTO_NUM_LOCKS.
2240 Whoever hopes to achieve shared-library compatibility across versions
2241 must use this, not the compile-time macro.
Bodo Möller11af1a21999-06-18 18:22:38 +00002242 (Exercise 0.9.4: Which is the minimum library version required by
2243 such programs?)
2244 Note: All this applies only to multi-threaded programs, others don't
2245 need locks.
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00002246 [Bodo Moeller]
2247
Bodo Möller95d29591999-06-12 01:03:40 +00002248 *) Add missing case to s3_clnt.c state machine -- one of the new SSL tests
2249 through a BIO pair triggered the default case, i.e.
2250 SSLerr(...,SSL_R_UNKNOWN_STATE).
2251 [Bodo Moeller]
2252
2253 *) New "BIO pair" concept (crypto/bio/bss_bio.c) so that applications
2254 can use the SSL library even if none of the specific BIOs is
2255 appropriate.
2256 [Bodo Moeller]
2257
Dr. Stephen Henson9bce3071999-06-11 22:30:45 +00002258 *) Fix a bug in i2d_DSAPublicKey() which meant it returned the wrong value
2259 for the encoded length.
2260 [Jeon KyoungHo <khjeon@sds.samsung.co.kr>]
2261
Dr. Stephen Henson565d1061999-06-11 01:58:42 +00002262 *) Add initial documentation of the X509V3 functions.
2263 [Steve Henson]
2264
Dr. Stephen Hensonb7d135b1999-06-10 17:32:52 +00002265 *) Add a new pair of functions PEM_write_PKCS8PrivateKey() and
2266 PEM_write_bio_PKCS8PrivateKey() that are equivalent to
2267 PEM_write_PrivateKey() and PEM_write_bio_PrivateKey() but use the more
2268 secure PKCS#8 private key format with a high iteration count.
2269 [Steve Henson]
2270
Ralf S. Engelschall9d9b5591999-06-10 08:13:52 +00002271 *) Fix determination of Perl interpreter: A perl or perl5
2272 _directory_ in $PATH was also accepted as the interpreter.
2273 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2274
Dr. Stephen Henson5f6d0ea1999-06-09 23:33:48 +00002275 *) Fix demos/sign/sign.c: well there wasn't anything strictly speaking
2276 wrong with it but it was very old and did things like calling
2277 PEM_ASN1_read() directly and used MD5 for the hash not to mention some
2278 unusual formatting.
2279 [Steve Henson]
2280
Dr. Stephen Hensonf62676b1999-06-09 18:05:30 +00002281 *) Fix demos/selfsign.c: it used obsolete and deleted functions, changed
2282 to use the new extension code.
2283 [Steve Henson]
2284
2285 *) Implement the PEM_read/PEM_write functions in crypto/pem/pem_all.c
2286 with macros. This should make it easier to change their form, add extra
2287 arguments etc. Fix a few PEM prototypes which didn't have cipher as a
2288 constant.
2289 [Steve Henson]
2290
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00002291 *) Add to configuration table a new entry that can specify an alternative
2292 name for unistd.h (for pre-POSIX systems); we need this for NeXTstep,
2293 according to Mark Crispin <MRC@Panda.COM>.
2294 [Bodo Moeller]
2295
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +00002296#if 0
Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00002297 *) DES CBC did not update the IV. Weird.

Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +00002299#else
Bodo Möllera7bd0391999-06-09 18:01:49 +00002300 des_cbc_encrypt does not update the IV, but des_ncbc_encrypt does.
2301 Changing the behaviour of the former might break existing programs --
2302 where IV updating is needed, des_ncbc_encrypt can be used.

Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00002304
Ben Laurie233bf731999-06-09 10:19:53 +00002305 *) When bntest is run from "make test" it drives bc to check its
2306 calculations, as well as internally checking them. If an internal check
2307 fails, it needs to cause bc to give a non-zero result or make test carries
2308 on without noticing the failure. Fixed.
2309 [Ben Laurie]
2310
Ulf Möller908eb7b1999-06-08 16:35:11 +00002311 *) DES library cleanups.
2312 [Ulf Möller]
2313
Dr. Stephen Henson8eb57af1999-06-08 00:09:51 +00002314 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 PBE algorithms. This will permit PKCS#8 to be
2315 used with any cipher unlike PKCS#5 v1.5 which can at most handle 64 bit
2316 ciphers. NOTE: although the key derivation function has been verified
2317 against some published test vectors it has not been extensively tested
2318 yet. Added a -v2 "cipher" option to pkcs8 application to allow the use
2319 of v2.0.
2320 [Steve Henson]
2321
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00002322 *) Instead of "mkdir -p", which is not fully portable, use new
2323 Perl script "util/mkdir-p.pl".
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00002324 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00002325
Dr. Stephen Henson69cbf461999-06-06 13:07:13 +00002326 *) Rewrite the way password based encryption (PBE) is handled. It used to
2327 assume that the ASN1 AlgorithmIdentifier parameter was a PBEParameter
2328 structure. This was true for the PKCS#5 v1.5 and PKCS#12 PBE algorithms
2329 but doesn't apply to PKCS#5 v2.0 where it can be something else. Now
2330 the 'parameter' field of the AlgorithmIdentifier is passed to the
2331 underlying key generation function so it must do its own ASN1 parsing.
2332 This has also changed the EVP_PBE_CipherInit() function which now has a
2333 'parameter' argument instead of literal salt and iteration count values
2334 and the function EVP_PBE_ALGOR_CipherInit() has been deleted.
2335 [Steve Henson]
2336
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00002337 *) Support for PKCS#5 v1.5 compatible password based encryption algorithms
Dr. Stephen Hensone7871ff1999-06-05 12:39:10 +00002338 and PKCS#8 functionality. New 'pkcs8' application linked to openssl.
2339 Needed to change the PEM_STRING_EVP_PKEY value which was just "PRIVATE
2340 KEY" because this clashed with PKCS#8 unencrypted string. Since this
2341 value was just used as a "magic string" and not used directly its
2342 value doesn't matter.
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00002343 [Steve Henson]
2344
Ben Laurie84c15db1999-06-04 22:23:10 +00002345 *) Introduce some semblance of const correctness to BN. Shame C doesn't
2346 support mutable.
2347 [Ben Laurie]
2348
Bodo Möller272c9331999-06-07 00:26:20 +00002349 *) "linux-sparc64" configuration (ultrapenguin).

Ulf Möllera53955d1999-06-04 21:35:58 +00002354 *) config now generates no-xxx options for missing ciphers.
2355 [Ulf Möller]
2356
2357 *) Support the EBCDIC character set (work in progress).
2358 File ebcdic.c not yet included because it has a different license.
2359 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
2360
2361 *) Support BS2000/OSD-POSIX.
2362 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
2363
Ben Laurieb4f76581999-06-03 18:04:04 +00002364 *) Make callbacks for key generation use void * instead of char *.
2365 [Ben Laurie]
2366
Ben Laurie213a75d1999-06-03 16:07:37 +00002367 *) Make S/MIME samples compile (not yet tested).
2368 [Ben Laurie]
2369
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002370 *) Additional typesafe stacks.
2371 [Ben Laurie]
2372
Bodo Möller885982d1999-06-04 21:46:35 +00002373 *) New configuration variants "bsdi-elf-gcc" (BSD/OS 4.x).

2385 [Wu Zhigang]
2386
2387 *) Fix memory leak in conf.c.
2388 [Steve Henson]
2389
Bodo Möller472bde41999-05-27 20:49:27 +00002390 *) Updates for Win32 to assembler version of MD5.
2391 [Steve Henson]
2392
2393 *) Set #! path to perl in apps/der_chop to where we found it
2394 instead of using a fixed path.
2395 [Bodo Moeller]
2396
2397 *) SHA library changes for irix64-mips4-cc.
2398 [Andy Polyakov]
2399
2400 *) Improvements for VMS support.
2401 [Richard Levitte]
2402
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002403
Bodo Möller557068c1999-05-24 22:38:23 +00002404 Changes between 0.9.2b and 0.9.3 [24 May 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00002405
Ulf Möllere14d4441999-05-20 01:43:07 +00002406 *) Bignum library bug fix. IRIX 6 passes "make test" now!
2407 This also avoids the problems with SC4.2 and unpatched SC5.
2408 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2409
Dr. Stephen Hensone84240d1999-05-19 12:45:16 +00002410 *) New functions sk_num, sk_value and sk_set to replace the previous macros.
2411 These are required because of the typesafe stack would otherwise break
2412 existing code. If old code used a structure member which used to be STACK
2413 and is now STACK_OF (for example cert in a PKCS7_SIGNED structure) with
2414 sk_num or sk_value it would produce an error because the num, data members
2415 are not present in STACK_OF. Now it just produces a warning. sk_set
2416 replaces the old method of assigning a value to sk_value
2417 (e.g. sk_value(x, i) = y) which the library used in a few cases. Any code
2418 that does this will no longer work (and should use sk_set instead) but
2419 this could be regarded as a "questionable" behaviour anyway.
2420 [Steve Henson]
2421
Dr. Stephen Henson1b266da1999-05-16 17:32:32 +00002422 *) Fix most of the other PKCS#7 bugs. The "experimental" code can now
2423 correctly handle encrypted S/MIME data.
2424 [Steve Henson]
2425
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00002426 *) Change type of various DES function arguments from des_cblock
Bodo Möllerf43c8141999-05-16 14:20:17 +00002427 (which means, in function argument declarations, pointer to char)
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00002428 to des_cblock * (meaning pointer to array with 8 char elements),
2429 which allows the compiler to do more typechecking; it was like
2430 that back in SSLeay, but with lots of ugly casts.
2431
2432 Introduce new type const_des_cblock.
2433 [Bodo Moeller]
2434
Dr. Stephen Henson84fa7041999-05-16 00:25:36 +00002435 *) Reorganise the PKCS#7 library and get rid of some of the more obvious
2436 problems: find RecipientInfo structure that matches recipient certificate
2437 and initialise the ASN1 structures properly based on passed cipher.
2438 [Steve Henson]
2439
Ben Laurie62bad771999-05-15 15:59:28 +00002440 *) Belatedly make the BN tests actually check the results.
2441 [Ben Laurie]
2442
Dr. Stephen Henson1ad2ecb1999-05-14 18:21:21 +00002443 *) Fix the encoding and decoding of negative ASN1 INTEGERS and conversion
2444 to and from BNs: it was completely broken. New compilation option
2445 NEG_PUBKEY_BUG to allow for some broken certificates that encode public
2446 key elements as negative integers.
2447 [Steve Henson]
2448
Ulf Möllerbd3576d1999-05-13 13:16:42 +00002449 *) Reorganize and speed up MD5.
2450 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2451
Ulf Möller7d7d2cb1999-05-13 11:37:32 +00002452 *) VMS support.
2453 [Richard Levitte <richard@levitte.org>]
2454
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5eac851999-05-12 01:56:27 +00002455 *) New option -out to asn1parse to allow the parsed structure to be
2456 output to a file. This is most useful when combined with the -strparse
2457 option to examine the output of things like OCTET STRINGS.
2458 [Steve Henson]
2459
Bodo Möllerb31b04d1999-05-11 07:43:16 +00002460 *) Make SSL library a little more fool-proof by not requiring any longer
2461 that SSL_set_{accept,connect}_state be called before
2462 SSL_{accept,connect} may be used (SSL_set_..._state is omitted
2463 in many applications because usually everything *appeared* to work as
2464 intended anyway -- now it really works as intended).
2465 [Bodo Moeller]
2466
Ulf Möllerd5a2ea41999-05-10 23:59:28 +00002467 *) Move openssl.cnf out of lib/.
2468 [Ulf Möller]
2469
Ralf S. Engelschall397f7031999-05-10 08:33:56 +00002470 *) Fix various things to let OpenSSL even pass ``egcc -pipe -O2 -Wall
2471 -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wmissing-prototypes
2472 -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Winline'' with EGCS 1.1.2+
2473 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2474
Dr. Stephen Henson884e8ec1999-05-10 00:47:42 +00002475 *) Various fixes to the EVP and PKCS#7 code. It may now be able to
2476 handle PKCS#7 enveloped data properly.
2477 [Sebastian Akerman <sak@parallelconsulting.com>, modified by Steve]
2478
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002479 *) Create a duplicate of the SSL_CTX's CERT in SSL_new instead of
2480 copying pointers. The cert_st handling is changed by this in
2481 various ways (and thus what used to be known as ctx->default_cert
2482 is now called ctx->cert, since we don't resort to s->ctx->[default_]cert
2483 any longer when s->cert does not give us what we need).
2484 ssl_cert_instantiate becomes obsolete by this change.
2485 As soon as we've got the new code right (possibly it already is?),
2486 we have solved a couple of bugs of the earlier code where s->cert
2487 was used as if it could not have been shared with other SSL structures.
2488
2489 Note that using the SSL API in certain dirty ways now will result
2490 in different behaviour than observed with earlier library versions:
2491 Changing settings for an SSL_CTX *ctx after having done s = SSL_new(ctx)
2492 does not influence s as it used to.
2493
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002494 In order to clean up things more thoroughly, inside SSL_SESSION
Bodo Möllerb56bce41999-05-13 15:09:38 +00002495 we don't use CERT any longer, but a new structure SESS_CERT
2496 that holds per-session data (if available); currently, this is
2497 the peer's certificate chain and, for clients, the server's certificate
2498 and temporary key. CERT holds only those values that can have
2499 meaningful defaults in an SSL_CTX.
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002500 [Bodo Moeller]
2501
Dr. Stephen Hensonc8b41851999-05-09 16:39:11 +00002502 *) New function X509V3_EXT_i2d() to create an X509_EXTENSION structure
2503 from the internal representation. Various PKCS#7 fixes: remove some
2504 evil casts and set the enc_dig_alg field properly based on the signing
2505 key type.
2506 [Steve Henson]
2507
Dr. Stephen Hensone40b7ab1999-05-08 12:59:50 +00002508 *) Allow PKCS#12 password to be set from the command line or the
2509 environment. Let 'ca' get its config file name from the environment
2510 variables "OPENSSL_CONF" or "SSLEAY_CONF" (for consistency with 'req'
2511 and 'x509').
2512 [Steve Henson]
2513
2514 *) Allow certificate policies extension to use an IA5STRING for the
2515 organization field. This is contrary to the PKIX definition but
2516 VeriSign uses it and IE5 only recognises this form. Document 'x509'
2517 extension option.
2518 [Steve Henson]
2519
Ben Laurie5b640021999-05-07 15:42:23 +00002520 *) Add PEDANTIC compiler flag to allow compilation with gcc -pedantic,
2521 without disallowing inline assembler and the like for non-pedantic builds.
2522 [Ben Laurie]
2523
Ulf Möller31a674d1999-05-06 00:46:34 +00002524 *) Support Borland C++ builder.
2525 [Janez Jere <jj@void.si>, modified by Ulf Möller]
2526
2527 *) Support Mingw32.
2528 [Ulf Möller]
2529
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002530 *) SHA-1 cleanups and performance enhancements.
2531 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2532
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002533 *) Sparc v8plus assembler for the bignum library.
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002534 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002535
Ulf Möllerafd1f9e1999-05-04 11:52:26 +00002536 *) Accept any -xxx and +xxx compiler options in Configure.
2537 [Ulf Möller]
2538
2539 *) Update HPUX configuration.
2540 [Anonymous]
2541
Ralf S. Engelschalldee75ec1999-05-04 10:15:02 +00002542 *) Add missing sk_<type>_unshift() function to safestack.h
2543 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2544
Bodo Möllerb3ca6451999-05-01 17:43:52 +00002545 *) New function SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file that sets the
2546 "extra_cert"s in addition to the certificate. (This makes sense
2547 only for "PEM" format files, as chains as a whole are not
2548 DER-encoded.)
2549 [Bodo Moeller]
2550
Bodo Möller7f897141999-05-01 03:20:40 +00002551 *) Support verify_depth from the SSL API.
2552 x509_vfy.c had what can be considered an off-by-one-error:
2553 Its depth (which was not part of the external interface)
2554 was actually counting the number of certificates in a chain;
2555 now it really counts the depth.
2556 [Bodo Moeller]
2557
Bodo Möllerdc1f6071999-05-01 20:16:35 +00002558 *) Bugfix in crypto/x509/x509_cmp.c: The SSLerr macro was used
2559 instead of X509err, which often resulted in confusing error
2560 messages since the error codes are not globally unique
2561 (e.g. an alleged error in ssl3_accept when a certificate
2562 didn't match the private key).
2563
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002564 *) New function SSL_CTX_set_session_id_context that allows to set a default
Bodo Möllerdd1462f1999-05-01 00:07:42 +00002565 value (so that you don't need SSL_set_session_id_context for each
2566 connection using the SSL_CTX).
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002567 [Bodo Moeller]
2568
Ulf Möllerc6652741999-04-29 21:56:13 +00002569 *) OAEP decoding bug fix.
2570 [Ulf Möller]
2571
Bodo Möllere5f30451999-04-29 21:52:08 +00002572 *) Support INSTALL_PREFIX for package builders, as proposed by
2573 David Harris.
2574 [Bodo Moeller]
2575
Bodo Möller87bc2c01999-04-29 16:10:41 +00002576 *) New Configure options "threads" and "no-threads". For systems
2577 where the proper compiler options are known (currently Solaris
2578 and Linux), "threads" is the default.
2579 [Bodo Moeller]
2580
Bodo Möller6e6acfd1999-04-28 22:33:54 +00002581 *) New script util/mklink.pl as a faster substitute for util/mklink.sh.
2582 [Bodo Moeller]
2583
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002584 *) Install various scripts to $(OPENSSLDIR)/misc, not to
2585 $(INSTALLTOP)/bin -- they shouldn't clutter directories
2586 such as /usr/local/bin.
2587 [Bodo Moeller]
2588
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002589 *) "make linux-shared" to build shared libraries.
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002590 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002591
Ulf Möllerf5d7a031999-04-27 01:14:46 +00002592 *) New Configure option no-<cipher> (rsa, idea, rc5, ...).
2593 [Ulf Möller]
2594
Dr. Stephen Hensonb64f8251999-04-27 00:36:20 +00002595 *) Add the PKCS#12 API documentation to openssl.txt. Preliminary support for
2596 extension adding in x509 utility.
2597 [Steve Henson]
2598
Ulf Möllera9be3af1999-04-26 16:43:10 +00002599 *) Remove NOPROTO sections and error code comments.
2600 [Ulf Möller]
2601
Dr. Stephen Henson47339f61999-04-26 00:23:10 +00002602 *) Partial rewrite of the DEF file generator to now parse the ANSI
2603 prototypes.
2604 [Steve Henson]
2605
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002606 *) New Configure options --prefix=DIR and --openssldir=DIR.
Ulf Möller9c4711c1999-04-24 23:39:52 +00002607 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002608
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002609 *) Complete rewrite of the error code script(s). It is all now handled
2610 by one script at the top level which handles error code gathering,
2611 header rewriting and C source file generation. It should be much better
2612 than the old method: it now uses a modified version of Ulf's parser to
2613 read the ANSI prototypes in all header files (thus the old K&R definitions
2614 aren't needed for error creation any more) and do a better job of
2615 translating function codes into names. The old 'ASN1 error code imbedded
2616 in a comment' is no longer necessary and it doesn't use .err files which
Dr. Stephen Henson6e781e81999-04-24 13:28:57 +00002617 have now been deleted. Also the error code call doesn't have to appear all
2618 on one line (which resulted in some large lines...).
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002619 [Steve Henson]
2620
Bodo Möller018b4ee1999-04-23 22:38:22 +00002621 *) Change #include filenames from <foo.h> to <openssl/foo.h>.
Bodo Möller92df9601999-04-23 22:20:21 +00002622 [Bodo Moeller]
2623
Bodo Möller85f48f71999-04-22 14:28:38 +00002624 *) Change behaviour of ssl2_read when facing length-0 packets: Don't return
2625 0 (which usually indicates a closed connection), but continue reading.
2626 [Bodo Moeller]
2627
Bodo Möller90b8bbb1999-04-22 13:38:03 +00002628 *) Fix some race conditions.
2629 [Bodo Moeller]
2630
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002631 *) Add support for CRL distribution points extension. Add Certificate
2632 Policies and CRL distribution points documentation.
2633 [Steve Henson]
2634
Ulf Möller8e10f2b1999-04-21 17:31:05 +00002635 *) Move the autogenerated header file parts to crypto/opensslconf.h.
2636 [Ulf Möller]
2637
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002638 *) Fix new 56-bit DES export ciphersuites: they were using 7 bytes instead of
2639 8 of keying material. Merlin has also confirmed interop with this fix
2640 between OpenSSL and Baltimore C/SSL 2.0 and J/SSL 2.0.
2641 [Merlin Hughes <merlin@baltimore.ie>]
2642
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002643 *) Fix lots of warnings.
2644 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2645
2646 *) In add_cert_dir() in crypto/x509/by_dir.c, break out of the loop if
2647 the directory spec didn't end with a LIST_SEPARATOR_CHAR.
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002648 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002649
Ulf Möller8fb04b91999-04-20 16:23:03 +00002650 *) Fix problems with sizeof(long) == 8.
2651 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2652
Ulf Möller6b691a51999-04-19 21:31:43 +00002653 *) Change functions to ANSI C.
2654 [Ulf Möller]
2655
Ulf Möllerdf82f5c1999-04-19 14:45:02 +00002656 *) Fix typos in error codes.
2657 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>, Ulf Möller]
2658
Ulf Möller22a4f961999-04-19 13:54:11 +00002659 *) Remove defunct assembler files from Configure.
2660 [Ulf Möller]
2661
Ulf Möller5e85b6a1999-04-19 13:41:45 +00002662 *) SPARC v8 assembler BIGNUM implementation.
2663 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2664
Dr. Stephen Henson3edd7ed1999-04-19 17:55:11 +00002665 *) Support for Certificate Policies extension: both print and set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002666 Various additions to support the r2i method this uses.
Dr. Stephen Henson41b731f1999-04-18 23:21:03 +00002667 [Steve Henson]
2668
Ben Lauriee7788021999-04-17 21:25:43 +00002669 *) A lot of constification, and fix a bug in X509_NAME_oneline() that could
2670 return a const string when you are expecting an allocated buffer.
2671 [Ben Laurie]
2672
Dr. Stephen Hensonc83e5231999-04-17 23:55:39 +00002673 *) Add support for ASN1 types UTF8String and VISIBLESTRING, also the CHOICE
2674 types DirectoryString and DisplayText.
Dr. Stephen Hensond77b3051999-04-17 15:53:32 +00002675 [Steve Henson]
2676
Dr. Stephen Henson1d48dd01999-04-16 23:57:04 +00002677 *) Add code to allow r2i extensions to access the configuration database,
2678 add an LHASH database driver and add several ctx helper functions.
2679 [Steve Henson]
2680
Dr. Stephen Henson953937b1999-04-15 23:07:00 +00002681 *) Fix an evil bug in bn_expand2() which caused various BN functions to
2682 fail when they extended the size of a BIGNUM.
2683 [Steve Henson]
2684
Dr. Stephen Henson28a98801999-04-14 23:44:41 +00002685 *) Various utility functions to handle SXNet extension. Modify mkdef.pl to
2686 support typesafe stack.
2687 [Steve Henson]
2688
Ben Laurie8f7de4f1999-04-14 11:13:47 +00002689 *) Fix typo in SSL_[gs]et_options().
2690 [Nils Frostberg <nils@medcom.se>]
2691
Dr. Stephen Henson0490a861999-04-13 23:56:39 +00002692 *) Delete various functions and files that belonged to the (now obsolete)
2693 old X509V3 handling code.
2694 [Steve Henson]
2695
Ulf Möller5fbe91d1999-04-13 00:58:49 +00002696 *) New Configure option "rsaref".
2697 [Ulf Möller]
2698
Bodo Möller5fd4e2b1999-04-12 19:58:17 +00002699 *) Don't auto-generate pem.h.
2700 [Bodo Moeller]
2701
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00002702 *) Introduce type-safe ASN.1 SETs.
2703 [Ben Laurie]
2704
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002705 *) Convert various additional casted stacks to type-safe STACK_OF() variants.
Ben Laurie135a1dc1999-05-07 09:18:25 +00002706 [Ben Laurie, Ralf S. Engelschall, Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002707
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00002708 *) Introduce type-safe STACKs. This will almost certainly break lots of code
2709 that links with OpenSSL (well at least cause lots of warnings), but fear
2710 not: the conversion is trivial, and it eliminates loads of evil casts. A
2711 few STACKed things have been converted already. Feel free to convert more.
2712 In the fullness of time, I'll do away with the STACK type altogether.
2713 [Ben Laurie]
2714
Ralf S. Engelschallf9a25931999-04-12 11:45:14 +00002715 *) Add `openssl ca -revoke <certfile>' facility which revokes a certificate
2716 specified in <certfile> by updating the entry in the index.txt file.
2717 This way one no longer has to edit the index.txt file manually for
2718 revoking a certificate. The -revoke option does the gory details now.
2719 [Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@openca.org>, Ralf S. Engelschall]
2720
Ralf S. Engelschall2f0cd191999-04-12 10:36:16 +00002721 *) Fix `openssl crl -noout -text' combination where `-noout' killed the
2722 `-text' option at all and this way the `-noout -text' combination was
2723 inconsistent in `openssl crl' with the friends in `openssl x509|rsa|dsa'.
2724 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2725
Ralf S. Engelschall268c2101999-04-12 09:59:05 +00002726 *) Make sure a corresponding plain text error message exists for the
2727 X509_V_ERR_CERT_REVOKED/23 error number which can occur when a
2728 verify callback function determined that a certificate was revoked.
2729 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2730
Bodo Möllerfc8ee061999-04-11 02:49:35 +00002731 *) Bugfix: In test/testenc, don't test "openssl <cipher>" for
2732 ciphers that were excluded, e.g. by -DNO_IDEA. Also, test
2733 all available cipers including rc5, which was forgotten until now.
2734 In order to let the testing shell script know which algorithms
2735 are available, a new (up to now undocumented) command
2736 "openssl list-cipher-commands" is used.
2737 [Bodo Moeller]
2738
Bodo Möllerc7ac31e1999-04-09 20:54:25 +00002739 *) Bugfix: s_client occasionally would sleep in select() when
2740 it should have checked SSL_pending() first.
2741 [Bodo Moeller]
2742
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002743 *) New functions DSA_do_sign and DSA_do_verify to provide access to
2744 the raw DSA values prior to ASN.1 encoding.
2745 [Ulf Möller]
2746
2747 *) Tweaks to Configure
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002748 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002749
Dr. Stephen Hensond2e26dc1999-04-08 23:55:42 +00002750 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 ASN1 PBES2 structures. No other support,
2751 yet...
2752 [Steve Henson]
2753
Ulf Möller99aab161999-04-01 12:34:33 +00002754 *) New variables $(RANLIB) and $(PERL) in the Makefiles.
2755 [Ulf Möller]
2756
Ulf Möller2613c1f1999-03-31 12:38:27 +00002757 *) New config option to avoid instructions that are illegal on the 80386.
2758 The default code is faster, but requires at least a 486.
2759 [Ulf Möller]
2760
Bodo Möller6d02d8e1999-03-31 12:06:30 +00002761 *) Got rid of old SSL2_CLIENT_VERSION (inconsistently used) and
2762 SSL2_SERVER_VERSION (not used at all) macros, which are now the
2763 same as SSL2_VERSION anyway.
2764 [Bodo Moeller]
2765
2766 *) New "-showcerts" option for s_client.
2767 [Bodo Moeller]
2768
Dr. Stephen Hensonee0508d1999-03-29 17:50:26 +00002769 *) Still more PKCS#12 integration. Add pkcs12 application to openssl
2770 application. Various cleanups and fixes.
2771 [Steve Henson]
2772
Dr. Stephen Henson8d8c7261999-03-28 23:17:34 +00002773 *) More PKCS#12 integration. Add new pkcs12 directory with Makefile.ssl and
2774 modify error routines to work internally. Add error codes and PBE init
2775 to library startup routines.
2776 [Steve Henson]
2777
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00002778 *) Further PKCS#12 integration. Added password based encryption, PKCS#8 and
2779 packing functions to asn1 and evp. Changed function names and error
2780 codes along the way.
2781 [Steve Henson]
2782
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00002783 *) PKCS12 integration: and so it begins... First of several patches to
2784 slowly integrate PKCS#12 functionality into OpenSSL. Add PKCS#12
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00002785 objects to objects.h
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00002786 [Steve Henson]
2787
Dr. Stephen Henson785cdf21999-03-27 14:06:25 +00002788 *) Add a new 'indent' option to some X509V3 extension code. Initial ASN1
2789 and display support for Thawte strong extranet extension.
2790 [Steve Henson]
2791
Ben Laurieba423ad1999-03-27 13:03:37 +00002792 *) Add LinuxPPC support.
2793 [Jeff Dubrule <igor@pobox.org>]
2794
Ben Laurie67da3df1999-03-27 12:53:21 +00002795 *) Get rid of redundant BN file bn_mulw.c, and rename bn_div64 to
2796 bn_div_words in alpha.s.
2797 [Hannes Reinecke <H.Reinecke@hw.ac.uk> and Ben Laurie]
2798
Ralf S. Engelschall0e9fc711999-03-25 07:49:33 +00002799 *) Make sure the RSA OAEP test is skipped under -DRSAref because
2800 OAEP isn't supported when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
2801 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2802
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00002803 *) Move definitions of IS_SET/IS_SEQUENCE inside crypto/asn1/asn1.h
2804 so they no longer are missing under -DNOPROTO.
2805 [Soren S. Jorvang <soren@t.dk>]
2806
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00002807
2808 Changes between 0.9.1c and 0.9.2b [22 Mar 1999]
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00002809
Ben Laurieb4cadc61999-03-22 12:22:14 +00002810 *) Make SSL_get_peer_cert_chain() work in servers. Unfortunately, it still
2811 doesn't work when the session is reused. Coming soon!
2812 [Ben Laurie]
2813
2814 *) Fix a security hole, that allows sessions to be reused in the wrong
2815 context thus bypassing client cert protection! All software that uses
2816 client certs and session caches in multiple contexts NEEDS PATCHING to
2817 allow session reuse! A fuller solution is in the works.
2818 [Ben Laurie, problem pointed out by Holger Reif, Bodo Moeller (and ???)]
2819
Ralf S. Engelschallafb23061999-03-20 13:04:12 +00002820 *) Some more source tree cleanups (removed obsolete files
2821 crypto/bf/asm/bf586.pl, test/test.txt and crypto/sha/asm/f.s; changed
2822 permission on "config" script to be executable) and a fix for the INSTALL
2823 document.
2824 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2825
Dr. Stephen Henson199d59e1999-03-14 01:16:45 +00002826 *) Remove some legacy and erroneous uses of malloc, free instead of
2827 Malloc, Free.
2828 [Lennart Bang <lob@netstream.se>, with minor changes by Steve]
2829
Ben Laurieb4899bb1999-03-12 20:41:09 +00002830 *) Make rsa_oaep_test return non-zero on error.
2831 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2832
Ben Laurie29c0fcc1999-03-12 20:26:27 +00002833 *) Add support for native Solaris shared libraries. Configure
2834 solaris-sparc-sc4-pic, make, then run shlib/solaris-sc4.sh. It'd be nice
2835 if someone would make that last step automatic.
2836 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@AdNovum.CH>]
2837
Ben Lauriecadf1261999-03-12 19:58:43 +00002838 *) ctx_size was not built with the right compiler during "make links". Fixed.
2839 [Ben Laurie]
2840
Dr. Stephen Hensonbc420ac1999-03-12 01:43:28 +00002841 *) Change the meaning of 'ALL' in the cipher list. It now means "everything
2842 except NULL ciphers". This means the default cipher list will no longer
2843 enable NULL ciphers. They need to be specifically enabled e.g. with
2844 the string "DEFAULT:eNULL".
2845 [Steve Henson]
2846
Dr. Stephen Hensonabd4c911999-03-11 02:42:13 +00002847 *) Fix to RSA private encryption routines: if p < q then it would
2848 occasionally produce an invalid result. This will only happen with
2849 externally generated keys because OpenSSL (and SSLeay) ensure p > q.
2850 [Steve Henson]
2851
Ralf S. Engelschall7e37e721999-03-10 19:57:05 +00002852 *) Be less restrictive and allow also `perl util/perlpath.pl
2853 /path/to/bin/perl' in addition to `perl util/perlpath.pl /path/to/bin',
2854 because this way one can also use an interpreter named `perl5' (which is
2855 usually the name of Perl 5.xxx on platforms where an Perl 4.x is still
2856 installed as `perl').
2857 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2858
Ralf S. Engelschall637691e1999-03-10 19:51:43 +00002859 *) Let util/clean-depend.pl work also with older Perl 5.00x versions.
2860 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2861
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00002862 *) Fix Makefile.org so CC,CFLAG etc are passed to 'make links' add
2863 advapi32.lib to Win32 build and change the pem test comparision
2864 to fc.exe (thanks to Ulrich Kroener <kroneru@yahoo.com> for the
Dr. Stephen Henson38138021999-03-10 18:30:48 +00002865 suggestion). Fix misplaced ASNI prototypes and declarations in evp.h
2866 and crypto/des/ede_cbcm_enc.c.
2867 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00002868
Ben Laurieb241fef1999-03-09 11:37:23 +00002869 *) DES quad checksum was broken on big-endian architectures. Fixed.
2870 [Ben Laurie]
2871
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002872 *) Comment out two functions in bio.h that aren't implemented. Fix up the
2873 Win32 test batch file so it (might) work again. The Win32 test batch file
2874 is horrible: I feel ill....
2875 [Steve Henson]
2876
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00002877 *) Move various #ifdefs around so NO_SYSLOG, NO_DIRENT etc are now selected
2878 in e_os.h. Audit of header files to check ANSI and non ANSI
2879 sections: 10 functions were absent from non ANSI section and not exported
2880 from Windows DLLs. Fixed up libeay.num for new functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002881 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00002882
Ralf S. Engelschalld10f0521999-03-08 12:35:01 +00002883 *) Make `openssl version' output lines consistent.
2884 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2885
Ralf S. Engelschallc0e538e1999-03-08 11:41:26 +00002886 *) Fix Win32 symbol export lists for BIO functions: Added
2887 BIO_get_ex_new_index, BIO_get_ex_num, BIO_get_ex_data and BIO_set_ex_data
2888 to ms/libeay{16,32}.def.
2889 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2890
Ralf S. Engelschall84107e61999-03-08 11:25:49 +00002891 *) Second round of fixing the OpenSSL perl/ stuff. It now at least compiled
2892 fine under Unix and passes some trivial tests I've now added. But the
2893 whole stuff is horribly incomplete, so a README.1ST with a disclaimer was
2894 added to make sure no one expects that this stuff really works in the
2895 OpenSSL 0.9.2 release. Additionally I've started to clean the XS sources
2896 up and fixed a few little bugs and inconsistencies in OpenSSL.{pm,xs} and
2897 openssl_bio.xs.
2898 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2899
Ben Laurie26a08461999-03-07 15:08:38 +00002900 *) Fix the generation of two part addresses in perl.
2901 [Kenji Miyake <kenji@miyake.org>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
2902
Ben Laurie7d3ce7b1999-03-07 14:17:32 +00002903 *) Add config entry for Linux on MIPS.
2904 [John Tobey <jtobey@channel1.com>]
2905
Ben Laurieefadf601999-03-07 15:21:08 +00002906 *) Make links whenever Configure is run, unless we are on Windoze.
Ben Lauriecba50681999-03-07 14:05:36 +00002907 [Ben Laurie]
2908
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00002909 *) Permit extensions to be added to CRLs using crl_section in openssl.cnf.
2910 Currently only issuerAltName and AuthorityKeyIdentifier make any sense
2911 in CRLs.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002912 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00002913
Ralf S. Engelschall116e3151999-03-06 16:07:47 +00002914 *) Add a useful kludge to allow package maintainers to specify compiler and
2915 other platforms details on the command line without having to patch the
2916 Configure script everytime: One now can use ``perl Configure
2917 <id>:<details>'', i.e. platform ids are allowed to have details appended
2918 to them (seperated by colons). This is treated as there would be a static
2919 pre-configured entry in Configure's %table under key <id> with value
2920 <details> and ``perl Configure <id>'' is called. So, when you want to
2921 perform a quick test-compile under FreeBSD 3.1 with pgcc and without
2922 assembler stuff you can use ``perl Configure "FreeBSD-elf:pgcc:-O6:::"''
2923 now, which overrides the FreeBSD-elf entry on-the-fly.
2924 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2925
Ben Lauriebc348241999-03-06 15:21:02 +00002926 *) Disable new TLS1 ciphersuites by default: they aren't official yet.
2927 [Ben Laurie]
2928
Ralf S. Engelschall3eb0ed61999-03-06 14:35:03 +00002929 *) Allow DSO flags like -fpic, -fPIC, -KPIC etc. to be specified
2930 on the `perl Configure ...' command line. This way one can compile
2931 OpenSSL libraries with Position Independent Code (PIC) which is needed
2932 for linking it into DSOs.
2933 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2934
Ben Laurief415fa31999-03-06 14:09:36 +00002935 *) Remarkably, export ciphers were totally broken and no-one had noticed!
2936 Fixed.
2937 [Ben Laurie]
2938
Ralf S. Engelschall0b903ec1999-03-06 13:29:09 +00002939 *) Cleaned up the LICENSE document: The official contact for any license
2940 questions now is the OpenSSL core team under openssl-core@openssl.org.
2941 And add a paragraph about the dual-license situation to make sure people
2942 recognize that _BOTH_ the OpenSSL license _AND_ the SSLeay license apply
2943 to the OpenSSL toolkit.
2944 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2945
Ralf S. Engelschallbb8f3c51999-03-06 12:32:06 +00002946 *) General source tree makefile cleanups: Made `making xxx in yyy...'
2947 display consistent in the source tree and replaced `/bin/rm' by `rm'.
2948 Additonally cleaned up the `make links' target: Remove unnecessary
2949 semicolons, subsequent redundant removes, inline point.sh into mklink.sh
2950 to speed processing and no longer clutter the display with confusing
2951 stuff. Instead only the actually done links are displayed.
2952 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2953
Ben Laurie988788f1999-03-06 12:09:36 +00002954 *) Permit null encryption ciphersuites, used for authentication only. It used
2955 to be necessary to set the preprocessor define SSL_ALLOW_ENULL to do this.
2956 It is now necessary to set SSL_FORBID_ENULL to prevent the use of null
2957 encryption.
2958 [Ben Laurie]
2959
Dr. Stephen Henson924acc51999-03-05 02:05:15 +00002960 *) Add a bunch of fixes to the PKCS#7 stuff. It used to sometimes reorder
2961 signed attributes when verifying signatures (this would break them),
2962 the detached data encoding was wrong and public keys obtained using
2963 X509_get_pubkey() weren't freed.
2964 [Steve Henson]
2965
Dr. Stephen Hensond00b7aa1999-03-05 01:07:04 +00002966 *) Add text documentation for the BUFFER functions. Also added a work around
2967 to a Win95 console bug. This was triggered by the password read stuff: the
2968 last character typed gets carried over to the next fread(). If you were
2969 generating a new cert request using 'req' for example then the last
2970 character of the passphrase would be CR which would then enter the first
2971 field as blank.
Dr. Stephen Henson9985bed1999-03-04 23:29:51 +00002972 [Steve Henson]
2973
Ralf S. Engelschall789285a1999-03-04 12:55:42 +00002974 *) Added the new `Includes OpenSSL Cryptography Software' button as
2975 doc/openssl_button.{gif,html} which is similar in style to the old SSLeay
2976 button and can be used by applications based on OpenSSL to show the
2977 relationship to the OpenSSL project.
2978 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2979
Ralf S. Engelschalla06c6021999-03-04 07:54:01 +00002980 *) Remove confusing variables in function signatures in files
2981 ssl/ssl_lib.c and ssl/ssl.h.
2982 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
2983
Ralf S. Engelschall8d697db1999-03-04 07:47:27 +00002984 *) Don't install bss_file.c under PREFIX/include/
2985 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
2986
Dr. Stephen Henson06c68491999-03-03 02:01:26 +00002987 *) Get the Win32 compile working again. Modify mkdef.pl so it can handle
2988 functions that return function pointers and has support for NT specific
2989 stuff. Fix mk1mf.pl and VC-32.pl to support NT differences also. Various
2990 #ifdef WIN32 and WINNTs sprinkled about the place and some changes from
2991 unsigned to signed types: this was killing the Win32 compile.
2992 [Steve Henson]
2993
Ralf S. Engelschall72e442a1999-03-22 15:50:34 +00002994 *) Add new certificate file to stack functions,
2995 SSL_add_dir_cert_subjects_to_stack() and
2996 SSL_add_file_cert_subjects_to_stack(). These largely supplant
2997 SSL_load_client_CA_file(), and can be used to add multiple certs easily
2998 to a stack (usually this is then handed to SSL_CTX_set_client_CA_list()).
Ben Laurieeb90a481999-02-28 17:41:55 +00002999 This means that Apache-SSL and similar packages don't have to mess around
3000 to add as many CAs as they want to the preferred list.
3001 [Ben Laurie]
3002
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00003003 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
3004 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
3005 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
3006 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
3007 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +00003008
3009 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
3010 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00003011
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +00003012 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
3013 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
3014 [Steve Henson]
3015
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +00003016 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
3017 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
3018 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
3019 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
3020 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
3021 (e.g. s_server).
3022 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
3023 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
3024 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
3025 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
3026 no way to reconfigure them.
3027 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
3028 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
3029 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
3030 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
3031 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
3032 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3033
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +00003034 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
3035 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
3036 recognized by the users.
3037 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3038
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +00003039 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
3040 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
3041 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
3042 already masked variable.
3043 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3044
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +00003045 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
3046 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3047
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +00003048 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
3049 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
3050 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
3051 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3052
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +00003053 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
3054 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
3055 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3056
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +00003057 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
3058 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
3059 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
3060 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
3061 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
3062 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
3063 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
3064 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
3065 now, too.
3066 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3067
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +00003068 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
3069 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
3070 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
3071
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +00003072 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
3073 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
3074 config file.
3075 [Steve Henson]
3076
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +00003077 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
3078 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
3079
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +00003080 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
3081 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
3082 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
3083 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
3084 [Ben Laurie]
3085
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +00003086 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
3087 [Steve Henson]
3088
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +00003089 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
3090 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3091
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +00003092 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
3093 [Ben Laurie]
3094
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +00003095 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
3096 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
3097 [Steve Henson]
3098
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00003099 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
3100 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
3101 [Steve Henson]
3102
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +00003103 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
3104 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
3105 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
3106 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
3107 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
3108 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
3109 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
3110 Ben Laurie]
3111
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +00003112 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
3113 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3114
3115 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
3116 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
3117 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
3118 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
3119 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3120
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003121 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
3122 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00003123 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003124 [Steve Henson]
3125
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00003126 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
3127 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for
3128 an example.
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003129 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00003130
Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +00003131 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
3132 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
3133 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
3134
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +00003135 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
3136 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
3137 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
3138 build instructions.
3139 [Steve Henson]
3140
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +00003141 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
3142 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
3143 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
3144 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
3145 [Steve Henson]
3146
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +00003147 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
3148 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
3149 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
3150 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
3151 [Ben Laurie]
3152
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00003153 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
3154 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
3155 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
3156 so it wasn't spotted.
3157 [Steve Henson, reported by Erwann ABALEA <eabalea@certplus.com>]
3158
Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +00003159 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
3160 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
3161 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
3162 vectors if you have them.
3163 [Ben Laurie]
3164
Ralf S. Engelschall2c6ccde1999-03-06 14:01:29 +00003165 *) Correct calculation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +00003166 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
3167 [Ben Laurie]
3168
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00003169 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
3170 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
3171 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
3172 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
3173 If you do a:
3174 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
3175 it will update them.
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00003176 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00003177
Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +00003178 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
3179 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
3180 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
3181 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
3182 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
3183 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
3184 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
3185 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3186
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +00003187 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
3188 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
3189 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
3190 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
3191 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
3192 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
3193 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
3194 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
3195 the crypto/md/ stuff).
3196 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3197
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +00003198 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
3199 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
3200 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
3201 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
3202 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
3203 [Steve Henson]
3204
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +00003205 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the
3206 INTEGER code.
3207 [Steve Henson]
3208
Mark J. Cox351d8991999-01-31 12:14:39 +00003209 *) Add new function, EVP_MD_CTX_copy() to replace frequent use of memcpy.
3210 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3211
Ralf S. Engelschallb621d771999-01-31 11:10:10 +00003212 *) Make sure `make rehash' target really finds the `openssl' program.
3213 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
3214
Ben Lauriea96e7811999-01-30 17:53:00 +00003215 *) Squeeze another 7% of speed out of MD5 assembler, at least on a P2. I'd
3216 like to hear about it if this slows down other processors.
3217 [Ben Laurie]
3218
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +00003219 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.
3220 [Alan Batie <batie@aahz.jf.intel.com>]
3221
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00003222 *) Fixed ms/32all.bat script: `no_asm' -> `no-asm'
3223 [Rainer W. Gerling <gerling@mpg-gv.mpg.de>]
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00003224
3225 *) New program nseq to manipulate netscape certificate sequences
3226 [Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +00003227
Dr. Stephen Henson9fe84291999-01-29 01:53:55 +00003228 *) Modify crl2pkcs7 so it supports multiple -certfile arguments. Fix a
3229 few typos.
3230 [Steve Henson]
3231
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +00003232 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION
3233 but the BN code had some problems that would cause failures when
3234 doing certificate verification and some other functions.
3235 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3236
Dr. Stephen Henson92c046c1999-01-28 00:16:44 +00003237 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
3238 [Steve Henson]
3239
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00003240 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
3241 [Steve Henson]
3242
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +00003243 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
3244 [Steve Henson]
3245
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +00003246 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
3247 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
3248 [Steve Henson]
3249
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00003250 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
3251 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
3252 CA extensions.
3253 [Steve Henson]
3254
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00003255 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the
3256 error code, add initial support to X509_print() and x509 application.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00003257 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00003258
Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +00003259 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
3260 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
3261 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
3262 [Steve Henson]
3263
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00003264 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
3265 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
3266 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
3267 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
3268 properly to be processed.
3269 [Steve Henson]
3270
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +00003271 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
3272 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
3273 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
3274 [Ben Laurie]
3275
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +00003276 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.
3277 [Ben Laurie, reported by Jeremy Hylton <jeremy@cnri.reston.va.us>]
3278
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00003279 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
3280 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
3281 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
3282 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
3283 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
3284 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
3285 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
3286 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
3287 or delete all the .err files.
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00003288 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00003289
Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +00003290 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
3291 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
3292 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
3293 to regenerate it if needed.
3294 [Ben Laurie, reported (with fix for C version) by Jun-ichiro itojun
3295 Hagino <itojun@kame.net>]
3296
3297 *) File was opened incorrectly in randfile.c.
3298 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3299
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +00003300 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
3301 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
3302 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
3303 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
3304 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
3305 [Steve Henson]
3306
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +00003307 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.
3308 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3309
Ben Laurie512d2221999-01-17 14:14:41 +00003310 *) Remove pointless MD5 hash when using DSA keys in ca.
3311 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
3312
Ben Laurie2c1ef381999-01-17 14:10:08 +00003313 *) Generate an error if given an empty string as a cert directory. Also
3314 generate an error if handed NULL (previously returned 0 to indicate an
3315 error, but didn't set one).
3316 [Ben Laurie, reported by Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
3317
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +00003318 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
3319 [Ben Laurie]
3320
Dr. Stephen Hensonee13f9b1999-01-14 18:25:07 +00003321 *) Fix the dummy function BN_ref_mod_exp() in rsaref.c to have the correct
3322 parameters. This was causing a warning which killed off the Win32 compile.
3323 [Steve Henson]
3324
Dr. Stephen Henson27eb6221999-01-14 18:21:57 +00003325 *) Remove C++ style comments from crypto/bn/bn_local.h.
3326 [Neil Costigan <neil.costigan@celocom.com>]
3327
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +00003328 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
3329 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
3330 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
3331 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
3332 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
3333 OID is not part of the table.
3334 [Steve Henson]

Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00003397 *) First cut of a cleanup for apps/. First the `ssleay' program is now named
3398 `openssl' and second, the shortcut symlinks for the `openssl <command>'
3399 are no longer created. This way we have a single and consistent command
3400 line interface `openssl <command>', similar to `cvs <command>'.

3424
stephen792a9001998-12-31 01:35:07 +00003425 *) Enhanced the err-ins.pl script so it makes the error library number

3430 *) Fixed sk_insert which never worked properly.
3431 [Steve Henson]
3432

3441 the new set of documenation files.
3442 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3443
Ben Laurie4098e891998-12-29 21:43:55 +00003444 *) SETs were incorrectly DER encoded. This was a major pain, because they
3445 shared code with SEQUENCEs, which aren't coded the same. This means that
3446 almost everything to do with SETs or SEQUENCEs has either changed name or
