Ralf S. Engelschall651d0af1998-12-22 15:04:48 +00003 _______________
4
Richard Levittec5e85802000-09-24 17:31:37 +00005 Changes between 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 [xx XXX 2000]
6
Richard Levitte501ebf12000-10-31 23:26:32 +00007 *) Improve RPM specification file by forcing symbolic linking and making
8 sure the installed documentation is also owned by root.root.
9 [Damien Miller <djm@mindrot.org>]
10
Richard Levitte815c83f2000-10-31 23:14:19 +000011 *) Add configuration option to build on Linux on both big-endian and
12 little-endian MIPS.
13 [Ralf Baechle <ralf@uni-koblenz.de>]
14
Richard Levitte3aba98e2000-10-28 22:44:03 +000015 *) Give the OpenSSL applications more possibilities to make use of
16 keys (public as well as private) handled by engines.
17 [Richard Levitte]
18
Richard Levitte7c155332000-10-27 11:22:17 +000019 *) Add OCSP code that comes from CertCo.
20 [Richard Levitte]
21
Ulf Möller34a14882000-10-26 22:24:49 +000022 *) Add VMS support for the Rijndael code.
Richard Levitte5270e702000-10-26 21:07:28 +000023 [Richard Levitte]
24
25 *) Added untested support for Nuron crypto accelerator.
26 [Ben Laurie]
27
28 *) Add support for external cryptographic devices. This code was
29 previously distributed separately as the "engine" branch.
30 [Geoff Thorpe, Richard Levitte]
31
Geoff Thorpe1df586b2000-10-26 20:02:33 +000032 *) Rework the filename-translation in the DSO code. It is now possible to
33 have far greater control over how a "name" is turned into a filename
34 depending on the operating environment and any oddities about the
35 different shared library filenames on each system.
36 [Geoff Thorpe]
37
Richard Levitte53400da2000-10-21 22:53:32 +000038 *) Support threads on FreeBSD-elf in Configure.
39 [Richard Levitte]
40
Richard Levitte0fd44e22000-10-21 21:24:11 +000041 *) Add the possibility to create shared libraries on HP-UX
42 [Richard Levitte]
43
Dr. Stephen Henson627ec352000-10-20 00:36:45 +000044 *) Fix for SHA1 assembly problem with MASM: it produces
45 warnings about corrupt line number information when assembling
46 with debugging information. This is caused by the overlapping
47 of two sections.
48 [Bernd Matthes <mainbug@celocom.de>, Steve Henson]
49
Richard Levitte567f17c2000-10-21 20:01:34 +000050 *) NCONF changes.
51 NCONF_get_number() has no error checking at all. As a replacement,
52 NCONF_get_number_e() is defined (_e for "error checking") and is
53 promoted strongly. The old NCONF_get_number is kept around for
54 binary backward compatibility.
55 Make it possible for methods to load from something other than a BIO,
56 by providing a function pointer that is given a name instead of a BIO.
57 For example, this could be used to load configuration data from an
58 LDAP server.
59 [Richard Levitte]
60
Dr. Stephen Henson71d525c2000-10-14 23:51:52 +000061 *) Fix typo in get_cert_by_subject() in by_dir.c
62 [Jean-Marc Desperrier <jean-marc.desperrier@certplus.com>]
63
Richard Levittea22fb392000-10-13 15:25:06 +000064 *) Rework the system to generate shared libraries:
65
66 - Make note of the expected extension for the shared libraries and
67 if there is a need for symbolic links from for example libcrypto.so.0
68 to libcrypto.so.0.9.7. There is extended info in Configure for
69 that.
70
71 - Make as few rebuilds of the shared libraries as possible.
72
73 - Still avoid linking the OpenSSL programs with the shared libraries.
74
75 - When installing, install the shared libraries separately from the
76 static ones.
77 [Richard Levitte]
78
Dr. Stephen Henson924046c2000-10-12 01:50:33 +000079 *) Fix for non blocking accept BIOs. Added new I/O special reason
80 BIO_RR_ACCEPT to cover this case. Previously use of accept BIOs
81 with non blocking I/O was not possible because no retry code was
82 implemented. Also added new SSL code SSL_WANT_ACCEPT to cover
83 this case.
84 [Steve Henson]
85
Richard Levitte3ab56512000-10-14 20:09:54 +000086 *) Added the beginnings of Rijndael support.
87 [Ben Laurie]
88
Dr. Stephen Hensond0c98582000-10-04 01:16:32 +000089 *) Fix for bug in DirectoryString mask setting. Add support for
Dr. Stephen Henson8ca533e2000-10-06 11:51:47 +000090 X509_NAME_print_ex() in 'req' and X509_print_ex() function
91 to allow certificate printing to more controllable, additional
92 'certopt' option to 'x509' to allow new printing options to be
93 set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond0c98582000-10-04 01:16:32 +000094 [Steve Henson]
95
Richard Levitteef71cb62000-10-01 21:46:43 +000096 *) Clean old EAY MD5 hack from e_os.h.
97 [Richard Levitte]
98
Bodo Möller3a0afe12000-09-26 11:39:37 +000099 *) Fix SSL_CTX_set_read_ahead macro to actually use its argument.
100
101 Copy SSL_CTX's read_ahead flag to SSL object directly in SSL_new
102 and not in SSL_clear because the latter is also used by the
103 accept/connect functions; previously, the settings made by
104 SSL_set_read_ahead would be lost during the handshake.
105 [Bodo Moeller; problems reported by Anders Gertz <gertz@epact.se>]
106
Richard Levitte88aeb642000-09-25 11:12:27 +0000107 *) Correct util/mkdef.pl to be selective about disabled algorithms.
108 Previously, it would create entries for disableed algorithms no
109 matter what.
110 [Richard Levitte]
Richard Levittec5e85802000-09-24 17:31:37 +0000111
Richard Levitte0e8f2fd2000-09-24 15:21:30 +0000112 Changes between 0.9.5a and 0.9.6 [24 Sep 2000]
Richard Levittec90341a2000-04-01 11:24:27 +0000113
Bodo Möllerf1192b72000-09-22 21:39:33 +0000114 *) In ssl23_get_client_hello, generate an error message when faced
115 with an initial SSL 3.0/TLS record that is too small to contain the
116 first two bytes of the ClientHello message, i.e. client_version.
117 (Note that this is a pathologic case that probably has never happened
118 in real life.) The previous approach was to use the version number
Bodo Möller5a5accd2000-09-22 21:45:49 +0000119 from the record header as a substitute; but our protocol choice
Bodo Möllerf1192b72000-09-22 21:39:33 +0000120 should not depend on that one because it is not authenticated
121 by the Finished messages.
122 [Bodo Moeller]
123
Ulf Möllerd49da3a2000-09-23 05:17:40 +0000124 *) More robust randomness gathering functions for Windows.
125 [Jeffrey Altman <jaltman@columbia.edu>]
126
Dr. Stephen Hensondbba8902000-09-22 21:32:08 +0000127 *) For compatibility reasons if the flag X509_V_FLAG_ISSUER_CHECK is
128 not set then we don't setup the error code for issuer check errors
129 to avoid possibly overwriting other errors which the callback does
130 handle. If an application does set the flag then we assume it knows
131 what it is doing and can handle the new informational codes
132 appropriately.
133 [Steve Henson]
134
Dr. Stephen Henson6cffb202000-09-21 18:57:00 +0000135 *) Fix for a nasty bug in ASN1_TYPE handling. ASN1_TYPE is used for
136 a general "ANY" type, as such it should be able to decode anything
137 including tagged types. However it didn't check the class so it would
138 wrongly interpret tagged types in the same way as their universal
139 counterpart and unknown types were just rejected. Changed so that the
140 tagged and unknown types are handled in the same way as a SEQUENCE:
141 that is the encoding is stored intact. There is also a new type
142 "V_ASN1_OTHER" which is used when the class is not universal, in this
143 case we have no idea what the actual type is so we just lump them all
144 together.
145 [Steve Henson]
146
Richard Levitte645749e2000-09-20 13:55:50 +0000147 *) On VMS, stdout may very well lead to a file that is written to
148 in a record-oriented fashion. That means that every write() will
149 write a separate record, which will be read separately by the
150 programs trying to read from it. This can be very confusing.
151
152 The solution is to put a BIO filter in the way that will buffer
153 text until a linefeed is reached, and then write everything a
154 line at a time, so every record written will be an actual line,
155 not chunks of lines and not (usually doesn't happen, but I've
156 seen it once) several lines in one record. BIO_f_linebuffer() is
157 the answer.
158
159 Currently, it's a VMS-only method, because that's where it has
160 been tested well enough.
161 [Richard Levitte]
162
Bodo Möllerfe035192000-09-19 23:25:00 +0000163 *) Remove 'optimized' squaring variant in BN_mod_mul_montgomery,
Bodo Möllera45bd292000-09-19 18:02:15 +0000164 it can return incorrect results.
Bodo Möllercb1fbf82000-09-19 23:06:14 +0000165 (Note: The buggy variant was not enabled in OpenSSL 0.9.5a,
166 but it was in 0.9.6-beta[12].)
Bodo Möllera45bd292000-09-19 18:02:15 +0000167 [Bodo Moeller]
168
Dr. Stephen Henson730e37e2000-09-18 12:30:57 +0000169 *) Disable the check for content being present when verifying detached
170 signatures in pk7_smime.c. Some versions of Netscape (wrongly)
171 include zero length content when signing messages.
172 [Steve Henson]
173
Bodo Möller07fcf422000-09-17 01:23:53 +0000174 *) New BIO_shutdown_wr macro, which invokes the BIO_C_SHUTDOWN_WR
175 BIO_ctrl (for BIO pairs).
Ulf Möllerd49da3a2000-09-23 05:17:40 +0000176 [Bodo Möller]
Bodo Möller07fcf422000-09-17 01:23:53 +0000177
Richard Levitte0e05f542000-09-15 21:22:50 +0000178 *) Add DSO method for VMS.
179 [Richard Levitte]
180
Ulf Möller1d84fd62000-09-14 18:37:53 +0000181 *) Bug fix: Montgomery multiplication could produce results with the
182 wrong sign.
183 [Ulf Möller]
184
Richard Levitte775bceb2000-09-14 15:28:44 +0000185 *) Add RPM specification openssl.spec and modify it to build three
186 packages. The default package contains applications, application
187 documentation and run-time libraries. The devel package contains
188 include files, static libraries and function documentation. The
189 doc package contains the contents of the doc directory. The original
190 openssl.spec was provided by Damien Miller <djm@mindrot.org>.
191 [Richard Levitte]
192
Richard Levittecc995262000-09-14 13:11:56 +0000193 *) Add a large number of documentation files for many SSL routines.
194 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE>]
195
Richard Levitte72660f52000-09-14 12:48:48 +0000196 *) Add a configuration entry for Sony News 4.
197 [NAKAJI Hiroyuki <nakaji@tutrp.tut.ac.jp>]
198
Ulf Möller5401c4c2000-09-13 01:48:05 +0000199 *) Don't set the two most significant bits to one when generating a
200 random number < q in the DSA library.
Ulf Möller523d7782000-09-13 02:01:35 +0000201 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möller5401c4c2000-09-13 01:48:05 +0000202
Bodo Möller54f10e62000-09-12 20:28:30 +0000203 *) New SSL API mode 'SSL_MODE_AUTO_RETRY'. This disables the default
204 behaviour that SSL_read may result in SSL_ERROR_WANT_READ (even if
205 the underlying transport is blocking) if a handshake took place.
206 (The default behaviour is needed by applications such as s_client
207 and s_server that use select() to determine when to use SSL_read;
208 but for applications that know in advance when to expect data, it
209 just makes things more complicated.)
210 [Bodo Moeller]
211
Ben Laurie2959f292000-09-11 17:58:09 +0000212 *) Add RAND_egd_bytes(), which gives control over the number of bytes read
213 from EGD.
214 [Ben Laurie]
215
Richard Levitte97d8e822000-09-10 14:45:19 +0000216 *) Add a few more EBCDIC conditionals that make `req' and `x509'
217 work better on such systems.
218 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
219
Dr. Stephen Henson84b65342000-09-07 23:14:26 +0000220 *) Add two demo programs for PKCS12_parse() and PKCS12_create().
221 Update PKCS12_parse() so it copies the friendlyName and the
222 keyid to the certificates aux info.
223 [Steve Henson]
224
Dr. Stephen Hensonf50c11c2000-09-07 17:42:25 +0000225 *) Fix bug in PKCS7_verify() which caused an infinite loop
226 if there was more than one signature.
227 [Sven Uszpelkat <su@celocom.de>]
228
Richard Levitte948d0122000-09-07 08:43:08 +0000229 *) Major change in util/mkdef.pl to include extra information
230 about each symbol, as well as presentig variables as well
231 as functions. This change means that there's n more need
232 to rebuild the .num files when some algorithms are excluded.
233 [Richard Levitte]
234
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000235 *) Allow the verify time to be set by an application,
236 rather than always using the current time.
237 [Steve Henson]
238
239 *) Phase 2 verify code reorganisation. The certificate
240 verify code now looks up an issuer certificate by a
241 number of criteria: subject name, authority key id
242 and key usage. It also verifies self signed certificates
243 by the same criteria. The main comparison function is
244 X509_check_issued() which performs these checks.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000245
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000246 Lot of changes were necessary in order to support this
247 without completely rewriting the lookup code.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000248
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000249 Authority and subject key identifier are now cached.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000250
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000251 The LHASH 'certs' is X509_STORE has now been replaced
252 by a STACK_OF(X509_OBJECT). This is mainly because an
253 LHASH can't store or retrieve multiple objects with
254 the same hash value.
255
256 As a result various functions (which were all internal
257 use only) have changed to handle the new X509_STORE
258 structure. This will break anything that messed round
259 with X509_STORE internally.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000260
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000261 The functions X509_STORE_add_cert() now checks for an
262 exact match, rather than just subject name.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000263
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000264 The X509_STORE API doesn't directly support the retrieval
265 of multiple certificates matching a given criteria, however
266 this can be worked round by performing a lookup first
267 (which will fill the cache with candidate certificates)
268 and then examining the cache for matches. This is probably
269 the best we can do without throwing out X509_LOOKUP
270 entirely (maybe later...).
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000271
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000272 The X509_VERIFY_CTX structure has been enhanced considerably.
273
274 All certificate lookup operations now go via a get_issuer()
275 callback. Although this currently uses an X509_STORE it
276 can be replaced by custom lookups. This is a simple way
277 to bypass the X509_STORE hackery necessary to make this
278 work and makes it possible to use more efficient techniques
279 in future. A very simple version which uses a simple
280 STACK for its trusted certificate store is also provided
281 using X509_STORE_CTX_trusted_stack().
282
283 The verify_cb() and verify() callbacks now have equivalents
284 in the X509_STORE_CTX structure.
285
286 X509_STORE_CTX also has a 'flags' field which can be used
287 to customise the verify behaviour.
288 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000289
Dr. Stephen Henson34216c02000-09-05 13:27:57 +0000290 *) Add new PKCS#7 signing option PKCS7_NOSMIMECAP which
291 excludes S/MIME capabilities.
292 [Steve Henson]
293
294 *) When a certificate request is read in keep a copy of the
295 original encoding of the signed data and use it when outputing
296 again. Signatures then use the original encoding rather than
297 a decoded, encoded version which may cause problems if the
298 request is improperly encoded.
299 [Steve Henson]
300
Bodo Mölleraffadbe2000-09-04 15:47:17 +0000301 *) For consistency with other BIO_puts implementations, call
302 buffer_write(b, ...) directly in buffer_puts instead of calling
303 BIO_write(b, ...).
Bodo Möller22c7ea42000-09-05 12:46:10 +0000304
305 In BIO_puts, increment b->num_write as in BIO_write.
Bodo Mölleraffadbe2000-09-04 15:47:17 +0000306 [Peter.Sylvester@EdelWeb.fr]
307
Bodo Möllerbbb8de02000-09-04 15:34:43 +0000308 *) Fix BN_mul_word for the case where the word is 0. (We have to use
309 BN_zero, we may not return a BIGNUM with an array consisting of
310 words set to zero.)
311 [Bodo Moeller]
312
313 *) Avoid calling abort() from within the library when problems are
314 detected, except if preprocessor symbols have been defined
315 (such as REF_CHECK, BN_DEBUG etc.).
316 [Bodo Moeller]
317
Dr. Stephen Hensonbd08a2b2000-09-03 23:13:48 +0000318 *) New openssl application 'rsautl'. This utility can be
319 used for low level RSA operations. DER public key
320 BIO/fp routines also added.
321 [Steve Henson]
322
Bodo Möllera545c6f2000-09-01 09:54:25 +0000323 *) New Configure entry and patches for compiling on QNX 4.
324 [Andreas Schneider <andreas@ds3.etech.fh-hamburg.de>]
325
Ben Laurie7049ef52000-08-30 18:14:28 +0000326 *) A demo state-machine implementation was sponsored by
327 Nuron (http://www.nuron.com/) and is now available in
328 demos/state_machine.
329 [Ben Laurie]
330
Dr. Stephen Henson7df1c722000-08-30 16:14:29 +0000331 *) New options added to the 'dgst' utility for signature
332 generation and verification.
333 [Steve Henson]
334
Dr. Stephen Hensond096b522000-08-22 22:20:25 +0000335 *) Unrecognized PKCS#7 content types are now handled via a
336 catch all ASN1_TYPE structure. This allows unsupported
337 types to be stored as a "blob" and an application can
338 encode and decode it manually.
339 [Steve Henson]
340
Dr. Stephen Henson7df1c722000-08-30 16:14:29 +0000341 *) Fix various signed/unsigned issues to make a_strex.c
Dr. Stephen Henson469938c2000-08-22 12:54:21 +0000342 compile under VC++.
343 [Oscar Jacobsson <oscar.jacobsson@celocom.com>]
344
345 *) ASN1 fixes. i2d_ASN1_OBJECT was not returning the correct
346 length if passed a buffer. ASN1_INTEGER_to_BN failed
347 if passed a NULL BN and its argument was negative.
348 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Sven Heiberg <sven@tartu.cyber.ee>]
349
Dr. Stephen Hensoneaa28182000-08-21 22:02:23 +0000350 *) Modification to PKCS#7 encoding routines to output definite
351 length encoding. Since currently the whole structures are in
352 memory there's not real point in using indefinite length
353 constructed encoding. However if OpenSSL is compiled with
354 the flag PKCS7_INDEFINITE_ENCODING the old form is used.
355 [Steve Henson]
356
Richard Levittee6629832000-08-18 09:36:59 +0000357 *) Added BIO_vprintf() and BIO_vsnprintf().
358 [Richard Levitte]
359
Richard Levitte6fd5a042000-08-17 23:27:03 +0000360 *) Added more prefixes to parse for in the the strings written
361 through a logging bio, to cover all the levels that are available
362 through syslog. The prefixes are now:
363

395
Dr. Stephen Hensond4fbe312000-08-06 18:43:32 +0000396 *) The obj_dat.pl script was messing up the sorting of object
397 names. The reason was that it compared the quoted version
398 of strings as a result "OCSP" > "OCSP Signing" because
399 " > SPACE. Changed script to store unquoted versions of
400 names and add quotes on output. It was also omitting some
401 names from the lookup table if they were given a default
402 value (that is if SN is missing it is given the same
403 value as LN and vice versa), these are now added on the
404 grounds that if an object has a name we should be able to
405 look it up. Finally added warning output when duplicate
406 short or long names are found.

414 and thus the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 countermeasure against protocol
415 version rollback attacks was not effective.

426 [Richard Levitte]
427
Dr. Stephen Hensona6575462000-07-28 01:58:15 +0000428 *) New functions ASN1_STRING_print_ex() and X509_NAME_print_ex()
429 these print out strings and name structures based on various
430 flags including RFC2253 support and proper handling of

Dr. Stephen Henson284ef5f2000-07-26 01:18:37 +0000435 *) Various fixes to use ASN1_TIME instead of ASN1_UTCTIME.
436 Also change the functions X509_cmp_current_time() and
437 X509_gmtime_adj() work with an ASN1_TIME structure,

445 [Steve Henson]
446

479
480 *) Fix the ASN1 encoding of tags using the 'long form'.
481 [Steve Henson]
482
Dr. Stephen Hensona338e212000-07-07 13:24:36 +0000483 *) New ASN1 functions, i2c_* and c2i_* for INTEGER and BIT
484 STRING types. These convert content octets to and from the
485 underlying type. The actual tag and length octets are
486 already assumed to have been read in and checked. These
487 are needed because all other string types have virtually
488 identical handling apart from the tag. By having versions
489 of the ASN1 functions that just operate on content octets
490 IMPLICIT tagging can be handled properly. It also allows
491 the ASN1_ENUMERATED code to be cut down because ASN1_ENUMERATED
492 and ASN1_INTEGER are identical apart from the tag.
493 [Steve Henson]
494
Richard Levitted5870bb2000-07-05 02:52:47 +0000495 *) Change the handling of OID objects as follows:
496
497 - New object identifiers are inserted in objects.txt, following
498 the syntax given in objects.README.
499 - objects.pl is used to process obj_mac.num and create a new
500 obj_mac.h.
501 - obj_dat.pl is used to create a new obj_dat.h, using the data in
502 obj_mac.h.
503
504 This is currently kind of a hack, and the perl code in objects.pl
505 isn't very elegant, but it works as I intended. The simplest way
506 to check that it worked correctly is to look in obj_dat.h and
507 check the array nid_objs and make sure the objects haven't moved
508 around (this is important!). Additions are OK, as well as
509 consistent name changes.

520
Dr. Stephen Henson4dd45352000-06-22 00:34:27 +0000521 *) mkstack.pl now sorts each macro group into lexical order.
522 Previously the output order depended on the order the files
523 appeared in the directory, resulting in needless rewriting
524 of safestack.h .
525 [Steve Henson]
526
Dr. Stephen Henson13083212000-06-21 02:25:30 +0000527 *) Patches to make OpenSSL compile under Win32 again. Mostly
528 work arounds for the VC++ problem that it treats func() as
529 func(void). Also stripped out the parts of mkdef.pl that
530 added extra typesafe functions: these no longer exist.
531 [Steve Henson]
532
Dr. Stephen Henson3aceb942000-06-16 23:29:26 +0000533 *) Reorganisation of the stack code. The macros are now all
534 collected in safestack.h . Each macro is defined in terms of
535 a "stack macro" of the form SKM_<name>(type, a, b). The
536 DEBUG_SAFESTACK is now handled in terms of function casts,
537 this has the advantage of retaining type safety without the
538 use of additional functions. If DEBUG_SAFESTACK is not defined
539 then the non typesafe macros are used instead. Also modified the
540 mkstack.pl script to handle the new form. Needs testing to see
541 if which (if any) compilers it chokes and maybe make DEBUG_SAFESTACK
Dr. Stephen Henson7ef82062000-06-20 18:45:28 +0000542 the default if no major problems. Similar behaviour for ASN1_SET_OF

545
Dr. Stephen Hensond3ed8ce2000-06-15 23:48:05 +0000546 *) When some versions of IIS use the 'NET' form of private key the
547 key derivation algorithm is different. Normally MD5(password) is
548 used as a 128 bit RC4 key. In the modified case
549 MD5(MD5(password) + "SGCKEYSALT") is used insted. Added some
550 new functions i2d_RSA_NET(), d2i_RSA_NET() etc which are the same
551 as the old Netscape_RSA functions except they have an additional
552 'sgckey' parameter which uses the modified algorithm. Also added
553 an -sgckey command line option to the rsa utility. Thanks to

Dr. Stephen Hensone366f2b2000-06-11 15:43:17 +0000558 *) The evp_local.h macros were using 'c.##kname' which resulted in

561 [Phillip Porch <root@theporch.com>]
562
Dr. Stephen Hensona91dedc2000-06-11 12:18:15 +0000563 *) New X509_get1_email() and X509_REQ_get1_email() functions that return
564 a STACK of email addresses from a certificate or request, these look
565 in the subject name and the subject alternative name extensions and
566 omit any duplicate addresses.
567 [Steve Henson]
568
Bodo Möllerdc434bb2000-06-08 20:26:03 +0000569 *) Re-implement BN_mod_exp2_mont using independent (and larger) windows.
570 This makes DSA verification about 2 % faster.
571 [Bodo Moeller]
572
573 *) Increase maximum window size in BN_mod_exp_... to 6 bits instead of 5
574 (meaning that now 2^5 values will be precomputed, which is only 4 KB
575 plus overhead for 1024 bit moduli).
576 This makes exponentiations about 0.5 % faster for 1024 bit
577 exponents (as measured by "openssl speed rsa2048").
578 [Bodo Moeller]
579
Bodo Möller947b3b82000-06-08 15:01:14 +0000580 *) Rename memory handling macros to avoid conflicts with other
581 software:
582 Malloc => OPENSSL_malloc
583 Malloc_locked => OPENSSL_malloc_locked

587
Bodo Möller482a9d42000-06-10 12:05:52 +0000588 *) New function BN_mod_exp_mont_word for small bases (roughly 15%
589 faster than BN_mod_exp_mont, i.e. 7% for a full DH exchange).

591
Ulf Möllerbe5d92e2000-06-03 23:23:10 +0000592 *) CygWin32 support.
593 [John Jarvie <jjarvie@newsguy.com>]
594
Geoff Thorpee41c8d62000-06-01 05:13:52 +0000595 *) The type-safe stack code has been rejigged. It is now only compiled
596 in when OpenSSL is configured with the DEBUG_SAFESTACK option and
597 by default all type-specific stack functions are "#define"d back to
598 standard stack functions. This results in more streamlined output
599 but retains the type-safety checking possibilities of the original
600 approach.
601 [Geoff Thorpe]
602
Geoff Thorpeccd86b62000-06-01 02:36:58 +0000603 *) The STACK code has been cleaned up, and certain type declarations
604 that didn't make a lot of sense have been brought in line. This has
605 also involved a cleanup of sorts in safestack.h to more correctly
606 map type-safe stack functions onto their plain stack counterparts.
607 This work has also resulted in a variety of "const"ifications of
608 lots of the code, especially "_cmp" operations which should normally
609 be prototyped with "const" parameters anyway.
610 [Geoff Thorpe]
611
Bodo Möller361ee972000-05-30 21:44:36 +0000612 *) When generating bytes for the first time in md_rand.c, 'stir the pool'
613 by seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes (with zero entropy count).
614 (The PRNG state consists of two parts, the large pool 'state' and 'md',
615 where all of 'md' is used each time the PRNG is used, but 'state'
616 is used only indexed by a cyclic counter. As entropy may not be
617 well distributed from the beginning, 'md' is important as a
618 chaining variable. However, the output function chains only half
619 of 'md', i.e. 80 bits. ssleay_rand_add, on the other hand, chains
620 all of 'md', and seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes will result
621 in all of 'state' being rewritten, with the new values depending
622 on virtually all of 'md'. This overcomes the 80 bit limitation.)
623 [Bodo Moeller]
624
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000625 *) In ssl/s2_clnt.c and ssl/s3_clnt.c, call ERR_clear_error() when
626 the handshake is continued after ssl_verify_cert_chain();
627 otherwise, if SSL_VERIFY_NONE is set, remaining error codes
628 can lead to 'unexplainable' connection aborts later.
629 [Bodo Moeller; problem tracked down by Lutz Jaenicke]
630
631 *) Major EVP API cipher revision.
632 Add hooks for extra EVP features. This allows various cipher
633 parameters to be set in the EVP interface. Support added for variable
634 key length ciphers via the EVP_CIPHER_CTX_set_key_length() function and
635 setting of RC2 and RC5 parameters.
636
637 Modify EVP_OpenInit() and EVP_SealInit() to cope with variable key length
638 ciphers.
639
640 Remove lots of duplicated code from the EVP library. For example *every*
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000641 cipher init() function handles the 'iv' in the same way according to the
642 cipher mode. They also all do nothing if the 'key' parameter is NULL and
643 for CFB and OFB modes they zero ctx->num.
644
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000645 New functionality allows removal of S/MIME code RC2 hack.
646
Dr. Stephen Henson57ae2e22000-05-30 02:10:57 +0000647 Most of the routines have the same form and so can be declared in terms
648 of macros.
649
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000650 By shifting this to the top level EVP_CipherInit() it can be removed from
651 all individual ciphers. If the cipher wants to handle IVs or keys
652 differently it can set the EVP_CIPH_CUSTOM_IV or EVP_CIPH_ALWAYS_CALL_INIT
653 flags.
Dr. Stephen Hensonbe06a932000-05-27 12:38:43 +0000654

659
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000660 *) Implement SSL_OP_TLS_ROLLBACK_BUG: In ssl3_get_client_key_exchange, if
661 this option is set, tolerate broken clients that send the negotiated
662 protocol version number instead of the requested protocol version
663 number.
664 [Bodo Moeller]
665
666 *) Call dh_tmp_cb (set by ..._TMP_DH_CB) with correct 'is_export' flag;
667 i.e. non-zero for export ciphersuites, zero otherwise.
668 Previous versions had this flag inverted, inconsistent with

670 [Bodo Moeller; problem reported by Amit Chopra]
671
Dr. Stephen Hensonb4b41f42000-05-24 13:09:59 +0000672 *) Add missing DSA library text string. Work around for some IIS

674 [Steve Henson]
675
Richard Levitte6d7cce42000-05-18 21:25:48 +0000676 *) Add a document (doc/standards.txt) that list all kinds of standards
677 and so on that are implemented in OpenSSL.
678 [Richard Levitte]
679
Dr. Stephen Henson439df502000-05-18 00:33:00 +0000680 *) Enhance c_rehash script. Old version would mishandle certificates
681 with the same subject name hash and wouldn't handle CRLs at all.
682 Added -fingerprint option to crl utility, to support new c_rehash
683 features.
684 [Steve Henson]
685
Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000686 *) Eliminate non-ANSI declarations in crypto.h and stack.h.

Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000688
Dr. Stephen Henson0cb957a2000-05-04 23:03:49 +0000689 *) Fix for SSL server purpose checking. Server checking was

693
Dr. Stephen Hensona331a302000-05-04 00:08:35 +0000694 *) Make PKCS#12 code work with no password. The PKCS#12 spec
695 is a little unclear about how a blank password is handled.
696 Since the password in encoded as a BMPString with terminating
697 double NULL a zero length password would end up as just the
698 double NULL. However no password at all is different and is
699 handled differently in the PKCS#12 key generation code. NS
700 treats a blank password as zero length. MSIE treats it as no
701 password on export: but it will try both on import. We now do
702 the same: PKCS12_parse() tries zero length and no password if
703 the password is set to "" or NULL (NULL is now a valid password:
704 it wasn't before) as does the pkcs12 application.
705 [Steve Henson]
706
Bodo Möller316e6a62000-05-02 20:29:03 +0000707 *) Bugfixes in apps/x509.c: Avoid a memory leak; and don't use

710 [Bodo Moeller]
711
Bodo Möllerdcba2532000-04-29 23:58:05 +0000712 *) Avoid 'thread_hash' memory leak in crypto/err/err.c by freeing
713 it in ERR_remove_state if appropriate, and change ERR_get_state
714 accordingly to avoid race conditions (this is necessary because
715 thread_hash is no longer constant once set).
716 [Bodo Moeller]
717
Ulf Möller39736282000-04-27 15:06:26 +0000718 *) Bugfix for linux-elf makefile.one.

720
Geoff Thorpedeb4d502000-04-20 06:44:18 +0000721 *) RSA_get_default_method() will now cause a default
722 RSA_METHOD to be chosen if one doesn't exist already.
723 Previously this was only set during a call to RSA_new()

725 RSA_get_default_method() to return NULL.
726 [Geoff Thorpe]
727
Geoff Thorpeb9e63912000-04-19 21:45:17 +0000728 *) Added native name translation to the existing DSO code
729 that will convert (if the flag to do so is set) filenames
730 that are sufficiently small and have no path information
731 into a canonical native form. Eg. "blah" converted to

733 [Geoff Thorpe]
734
Bodo Möllere5c84d52000-04-14 23:36:15 +0000735 *) New function ERR_error_string_n(e, buf, len) which is like

740
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000741 *) CONF library reworked to become more general. A new CONF
742 configuration file reader "class" is implemented as well as a
743 new functions (NCONF_*, for "New CONF") to handle it. The now
744 old CONF_* functions are still there, but are reimplemented to
745 work in terms of the new functions. Also, a set of functions
746 to handle the internal storage of the configuration data is
747 provided to make it easier to write new configuration file
748 reader "classes" (I can definitely see something reading a
749 configuration file in XML format, for example), called _CONF_*,
750 or "the configuration storage API"...
751
752 The new configuration file reading functions are:
753
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000754 NCONF_new, NCONF_free, NCONF_load, NCONF_load_fp, NCONF_load_bio,
755 NCONF_get_section, NCONF_get_string, NCONF_get_numbre
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000756
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000757 NCONF_default, NCONF_WIN32
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000758
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000759 NCONF_dump_fp, NCONF_dump_bio
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000760
761 NCONF_default and NCONF_WIN32 are method (or "class") choosers,
762 NCONF_new creates a new CONF object. This works in the same way
763 as other interfaces in OpenSSL, like the BIO interface.
764 NCONF_dump_* dump the internal storage of the configuration file,
765 which is useful for debugging. All other functions take the same
766 arguments as the old CONF_* functions wth the exception of the
767 first that must be a `CONF *' instead of a `LHASH *'.
768
769 To make it easer to use the new classes with the old CONF_* functions,
770 the function CONF_set_default_method is provided.
771 [Richard Levitte]
772
Bodo Möller1d90f282000-04-06 22:33:14 +0000773 *) Add '-tls1' option to 'openssl ciphers', which was already
774 mentioned in the documentation but had not been implemented.
775 (This option is not yet really useful because even the additional
776 experimental TLS 1.0 ciphers are currently treated as SSL 3.0 ciphers.)
777 [Bodo Moeller]
778
Geoff Thorpe6ef4d9d2000-04-04 22:49:27 +0000779 *) Initial DSO code added into libcrypto for letting OpenSSL (and

786 *) Make sure _lrotl and _lrotr are only used with MSVC.
Bodo Möller865874f2000-02-28 18:03:16 +0000787
Bodo Möllercf194c12000-03-30 08:12:35 +0000788 *) Use lock CRYPTO_LOCK_RAND correctly in ssleay_rand_status
789 (the default implementation of RAND_status).
790
Bodo Möller3bc90f22000-03-27 18:10:08 +0000791 *) Rename openssl x509 option '-crlext', which was added in 0.9.5,
792 to '-clrext' (= clear extensions), as intended and documented.
793 [Bodo Moeller; inconsistency pointed out by Michael Attili

795
Dr. Stephen Hensonb475baf2000-03-27 00:53:27 +0000796 *) Fix for HMAC. It wasn't zeroing the rest of the block if the key length

799
Dr. Stephen Hensone77066e2000-03-22 13:50:23 +0000800 *) Modernise PKCS12_parse() so it uses STACK_OF(X509) for its ca argument
801 fix a leak when the ca argument was passed as NULL. Stop X509_PUBKEY_set()
802 using the passed key: if the passed key was a private key the result

813 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Brian Korver <briank@cs.stanford.edu>]
814
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000815 *) For easily testing in shell scripts whether some command
816 'openssl XXX' exists, the new pseudo-command 'openssl no-XXX'
Bodo Möllerdf1ff3f2000-03-13 21:01:05 +0000817 returns with exit code 0 iff no command of the given name is available.
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000818 'no-XXX' is printed in this case, 'XXX' otherwise. In both cases,
Bodo Möller46c46472000-03-13 20:31:46 +0000819 the output goes to stdout and nothing is printed to stderr.
820 Additional arguments are always ignored.
821
822 Since for each cipher there is a command of the same name,
823 the 'no-cipher' compilation switches can be tested this way.
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +0000824
825 ('openssl no-XXX' is not able to detect pseudo-commands such

831
Bodo Möllere11f0de2000-03-13 17:07:04 +0000832 *) For SSL_[CTX_]set_tmp_dh, don't create a DH key if SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE
833 is set; it will be thrown away anyway because each handshake creates
834 its own key.
835 ssl_cert_dup, which is used by SSL_new, now copies DH keys in addition
836 to parameters -- in previous versions (since OpenSSL 0.9.3) the
837 'default key' from SSL_CTX_set_tmp_dh would always be lost, meanining
838 you effectivly got SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE when using this macro.
839 [Bodo Moeller]
840
Bodo Möller2d5e4492000-03-10 13:49:02 +0000841 *) New s_client option -ign_eof: EOF at stdin is ignored, and
842 'Q' and 'R' lose their special meanings (quit/renegotiate).
843 This is part of what -quiet does; unlike -quiet, -ign_eof
844 does not suppress any output.
845 [Richard Levitte]
846
Bodo Möllerdaf4e532000-03-07 15:10:08 +0000847 *) Add compatibility options to the purpose and trust code. The
Dr. Stephen Henson068fdce2000-03-07 14:04:29 +0000848 purpose X509_PURPOSE_ANY is "any purpose" which automatically
849 accepts a certificate or CA, this was the previous behaviour,
850 with all the associated security issues.
851
852 X509_TRUST_COMPAT is the old trust behaviour: only and
853 automatically trust self signed roots in certificate store. A
854 new trust setting X509_TRUST_DEFAULT is used to specify that
855 a purpose has no associated trust setting and it should instead
856 use the value in the default purpose.
857 [Steve Henson]
858
Dr. Stephen Henson48fe0ee2000-03-07 01:03:33 +0000859 *) Fix the PKCS#8 DSA private key code so it decodes keys again

861 [Steve Henson]
862
Bodo Möller59fc2b02000-03-05 00:19:36 +0000863 *) In util/mkerr.pl (which implements 'make errors'), preserve

865 the default to have only downcase letters (and digits) in
866 automatically generated reasons codes is not always appropriate.
867 [Bodo Moeller]
868
Bodo Möller0a150c52000-03-04 01:36:53 +0000869 *) In ERR_load_ERR_strings(), build an ERR_LIB_SYS error reason table
870 using strerror. Previously, ERR_reason_error_string() returned
871 library names as reason strings for SYSerr; but SYSerr is a special
872 case where small numbers are errno values, not library numbers.
873 [Bodo Moeller]
874
Bodo Möller41918452000-03-03 22:18:19 +0000875 *) Add '-dsaparam' option to 'openssl dhparam' application. This
876 converts DSA parameters into DH parameters. (When creating parameters,
877 DSA_generate_parameters is used.)
878 [Bodo Moeller]
879
880 *) Include 'length' (recommended exponent length) in C code generated
881 by 'openssl dhparam -C'.
882 [Bodo Moeller]
883
Dr. Stephen Hensond9c88a32000-03-03 00:06:40 +0000884 *) The second argument to set_label in perlasm was already being used

886 which was free.
887 [Steve Henson]
888
Bodo Möller84d14402000-03-02 22:44:55 +0000889 *) In PEM_ASN1_write_bio and some other functions, use RAND_pseudo_bytes

891 [Bodo Moeller]
892
Bodo Möller5eb8ca42000-03-02 14:34:58 +0000893 *) Include RAND_status() into RAND_METHOD instead of implementing

895 RAND_set_rand_method would be impossible.
896 [Bodo Moeller]
897
Ulf Möller7a2dfc22000-03-01 19:07:58 +0000898 *) Don't let DSA_generate_key() enter an infinite loop if the random

900 [Bodo Moeller]
901
Bodo Möller55f7d652000-03-01 07:57:25 +0000902 *) New 'rand' application for creating pseudo-random output.
903 [Bodo Moeller]
904
Ralf S. Engelschall010712f2000-02-29 15:29:02 +0000905 *) Added configuration support for Linux/IA64

929
Dr. Stephen Henson94de0412000-02-27 01:15:25 +0000930 *) Add an optional second argument to the set_label() in the perl
931 assembly language builder. If this argument exists and is set
932 to 1 it signals that the assembler should use a symbol whose
933 scope is the entire file, not just the current function. This
934 is needed with MASM which uses the format label:: for this scope.
935 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Peter Runestig <peter@runestig.com>]
936
Dr. Stephen Henson02021972000-02-26 19:25:31 +0000937 *) Change the ASN1 types so they are typedefs by default. Before
938 almost all types were #define'd to ASN1_STRING which was causing
939 STACK_OF() problems: you couldn't declare STACK_OF(ASN1_UTF8STRING)
940 for example.
941 [Steve Henson]
942
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +0000943 *) Change names of new functions to the new get1/get0 naming
944 convention: After 'get1', the caller owns a reference count
945 and has to call ..._free; 'get0' returns a pointer to some
946 data structure without incrementing reference counters.
947 (Some of the existing 'get' functions increment a reference
948 counter, some don't.)
949 Similarly, 'set1' and 'add1' functions increase reference
950 counters or duplicate objects.
Dr. Stephen Hensonc7cb16a2000-02-26 01:55:33 +0000951 [Steve Henson]
952
Dr. Stephen Hensonfbb41ae2000-02-25 00:23:48 +0000953 *) Allow for the possibility of temp RSA key generation failure:
954 the code used to assume it always worked and crashed on failure.
955 [Steve Henson]
956
Ulf Möller505b5a02000-02-24 22:57:42 +0000957 *) Fix potential buffer overrun problem in BIO_printf().
958 [Ulf Möller, using public domain code by Patrick Powell; problem
959 pointed out by David Sacerdote <das33@cornell.edu>]
960
Ulf Möller4ec2d4d2000-02-24 02:51:47 +0000961 *) Support EGD <http://www.lothar.com/tech/crypto/>. New functions
962 RAND_egd() and RAND_status(). In the command line application,
963 the EGD socket can be specified like a seed file using RANDFILE
964 or -rand.
965 [Ulf Möller]
966
Dr. Stephen Henson3142c862000-02-23 01:11:01 +0000967 *) Allow the string CERTIFICATE to be tolerated in PKCS#7 structures.
968 Some CAs (e.g. Verisign) distribute certificates in this form.
969 [Steve Henson]
970
971 *) Remove the SSL_ALLOW_ADH compile option and set the default cipher
972 list to exclude them. This means that no special compilation option
973 is needed to use anonymous DH: it just needs to be included in the
974 cipher list.
975 [Steve Henson]
976
Dr. Stephen Henson72b60352000-02-22 02:59:26 +0000977 *) Change the EVP_MD_CTX_type macro so its meaning consistent with
978 EVP_MD_type. The old functionality is available in a new macro called
979 EVP_MD_md(). Change code that uses it and update docs.
980 [Steve Henson]
981
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000982 *) ..._ctrl functions now have corresponding ..._callback_ctrl functions
983 where the 'void *' argument is replaced by a function pointer argument.
984 Previously 'void *' was abused to point to functions, which works on
985 many platforms, but is not correct. As these functions are usually
986 called by macros defined in OpenSSL header files, most source code
987 should work without changes.
Ulf Möllercdf20e02000-02-23 21:57:22 +0000988 [Richard Levitte]
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +0000989
990 *) <openssl/opensslconf.h> (which is created by Configure) now contains
991 sections with information on -D... compiler switches used for
992 compiling the library so that applications can see them. To enable
993 one of these sections, a pre-processor symbol OPENSSL_..._DEFINES
994 must be defined. E.g.,
995 #define OPENSSL_ALGORITHM_DEFINES
996 #include <openssl/opensslconf.h>
997 defines all pertinent NO_<algo> symbols, such as NO_IDEA, NO_RSA, etc.

1002 [Bodo Moeller]
1003
Dr. Stephen Hensond754b382000-02-20 18:27:23 +00001004 *) Change the 'other' type in certificate aux info to a STACK_OF
1005 X509_ALGOR. Although not an AlgorithmIdentifier as such it has
1006 the required ASN1 format: arbitrary types determined by an OID.
1007 [Steve Henson]
1008
Dr. Stephen Henson8a208cb2000-02-18 00:54:21 +00001009 *) Add some PEM_write_X509_REQ_NEW() functions and a command line
1010 argument to 'req'. This is not because the function is newer or
1011 better than others it just uses the work 'NEW' in the certificate
1012 request header lines. Some software needs this.
1013 [Steve Henson]
1014
Dr. Stephen Hensona3fe3822000-02-16 23:16:01 +00001015 *) Reorganise password command line arguments: now passwords can be
1016 obtained from various sources. Delete the PEM_cb function and make
1017 it the default behaviour: i.e. if the callback is NULL and the
1018 usrdata argument is not NULL interpret it as a null terminated pass
1019 phrase. If usrdata and the callback are NULL then the pass phrase
1020 is prompted for as usual.
1021 [Steve Henson]
1022
Ben Lauriebd03b992000-02-16 22:15:39 +00001023 *) Add support for the Compaq Atalla crypto accelerator. If it is installed,
1024 the support is automatically enabled. The resulting binaries will
1025 autodetect the card and use it if present.
1026 [Ben Laurie and Compaq Inc.]
1027
Dr. Stephen Hensonde469ef2000-02-15 14:19:44 +00001028 *) Work around for Netscape hang bug. This sends certificate request
1029 and server done in one record. Since this is perfectly legal in the
1030 SSL/TLS protocol it isn't a "bug" option and is on by default. See
1031 the bugs/SSLv3 entry for more info.
1032 [Steve Henson]
1033
Andy Polyakovbcba6cc2000-02-12 23:33:01 +00001034 *) HP-UX tune-up: new unified configs, HP C compiler bug workaround.
1035 [Andy Polyakov]
1036
Dr. Stephen Hensond13e4eb2000-02-12 03:03:04 +00001037 *) Add -rand argument to smime and pkcs12 applications and read/write
1038 of seed file.
1039 [Steve Henson]
1040
Bodo Möller3ebf0be2000-02-11 17:18:50 +00001041 *) New 'passwd' tool for crypt(3) and apr1 password hashes.
Bodo Möllerbb325c72000-02-10 21:50:52 +00001042 [Bodo Moeller]
1043
Dr. Stephen Hensonf07fb9b2000-02-08 01:34:59 +00001044 *) Add command line password options to the remaining applications.
1045 [Steve Henson]
1046
Ulf Möllercae55bf2000-02-06 15:56:59 +00001047 *) Bug fix for BN_div_recp() for numerators with an even number of
1048 bits.
1049 [Ulf Möller]
1050
1051 *) More tests in bntest.c, and changed test_bn output.
1052 [Ulf Möller]
1053
Andy Polyakov0fad6cb2000-02-06 11:15:20 +00001054 *) ./config recognizes MacOS X now.
1055 [Andy Polyakov]
1056
Ulf Möller4a6222d2000-02-06 00:25:39 +00001057 *) Bug fix for BN_div() when the first words of num and divsor are
1058 equal (it gave wrong results if (rem=(n1-q*d0)&BN_MASK2) < d0).
1059 [Ulf Möller]
1060
Dr. Stephen Henson66430202000-02-05 21:07:56 +00001061 *) Add support for various broken PKCS#8 formats, and command line
1062 options to produce them.
1063 [Steve Henson]
1064
Ulf Möller9b141122000-02-05 14:17:32 +00001065 *) New functions BN_CTX_start(), BN_CTX_get() and BT_CTX_end() to
1066 get temporary BIGNUMs from a BN_CTX.
1067 [Ulf Möller]
1068
1069 *) Correct return values in BN_mod_exp_mont() and BN_mod_exp2_mont()
1070 for p == 0.
1071 [Ulf Möller]
1072
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf57d842000-02-04 14:01:38 +00001073 *) Change the SSLeay_add_all_*() functions to OpenSSL_add_all_*() and
1074 include a #define from the old name to the new. The original intent
1075 was that statically linked binaries could for example just call
1076 SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() to just add ciphers to the table and not
1077 link with digests. This never worked becayse SSLeay_add_all_digests()
1078 and SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() were in the same source file so calling
1079 one would link with the other. They are now in separate source files.
1080 [Steve Henson]
1081
Dr. Stephen Henson82fc1d92000-02-03 02:56:48 +00001082 *) Add a new -notext option to 'ca' and a -pubkey option to 'spkac'.
1083 [Steve Henson]
1084
Bodo Möllere74231e2000-02-02 21:20:44 +00001085 *) Use a less unusual form of the Miller-Rabin primality test (it used
1086 a binary algorithm for exponentiation integrated into the Miller-Rabin
1087 loop, our standard modexp algorithms are faster).
1088 [Bodo Moeller]
1089
Bodo Möller2c5fe5b2000-02-01 07:50:42 +00001090 *) Support for the EBCDIC character set completed.
Ulf Möller8efb6012000-02-01 02:21:16 +00001091 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@Mch.SNI.De>]
1092
Ulf Möller98d0b2e2000-01-30 23:34:33 +00001093 *) Source code cleanups: use const where appropriate, eliminate casts,
1094 use void * instead of char * in lhash.
1095 [Ulf Möller]
1096
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001097 *) Bugfix: ssl3_send_server_key_exchange was not restartable
1098 (the state was not changed to SSL3_ST_SW_KEY_EXCH_B, and because of
1099 this the server could overwrite ephemeral keys that the client
1100 has already seen).
1101 [Bodo Moeller]
1102
1103 *) Turn DSA_is_prime into a macro that calls BN_is_prime,
1104 using 50 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test.
1105
1106 DSA_generate_parameters now uses BN_is_prime_fasttest (with 50
1107 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test as required by the appendix
1108 to FIPS PUB 186[-1]) instead of DSA_is_prime.
1109 As BN_is_prime_fasttest includes trial division, DSA parameter
1110 generation becomes much faster.
1111
1112 This implies a change for the callback functions in DSA_is_prime
Bodo Möllercdd43b52000-01-30 11:05:39 +00001113 and DSA_generate_parameters: The callback function is called once
1114 for each positive witness in the Rabin-Miller test, not just
1115 occasionally in the inner loop; and the parameters to the
1116 callback function now provide an iteration count for the outer
1117 loop rather than for the current invocation of the inner loop.
1118 DSA_generate_parameters additionally can call the callback
1119 function with an 'iteration count' of -1, meaning that a
1120 candidate has passed the trial division test (when q is generated
1121 from an application-provided seed, trial division is skipped).
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001122 [Bodo Moeller]
1123
Bodo Möller7865b872000-01-30 02:40:38 +00001124 *) New function BN_is_prime_fasttest that optionally does trial
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001125 division before starting the Rabin-Miller test and has
1126 an additional BN_CTX * argument (whereas BN_is_prime always
1127 has to allocate at least one BN_CTX).
Bodo Möller1baa9492000-01-30 03:32:28 +00001128 'callback(1, -1, cb_arg)' is called when a number has passed the
1129 trial division stage.
1130 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001131
Dr. Stephen Hensone1314b52000-01-29 00:00:26 +00001132 *) Fix for bug in CRL encoding. The validity dates weren't being handled
1133 as ASN1_TIME.
1134 [Steve Henson]
1135
Dr. Stephen Henson90644dd2000-01-28 01:35:31 +00001136 *) New -pkcs12 option to CA.pl script to write out a PKCS#12 file.
1137 [Steve Henson]
1138
Ulf Möller38e33ce2000-01-27 19:31:26 +00001139 *) New function BN_pseudo_rand().
1140 [Ulf Möller]
Ralf S. Engelschalld91e2011999-08-09 11:14:08 +00001141
Ulf Möllere93f9a32000-01-27 01:50:42 +00001142 *) Clean up BN_mod_mul_montgomery(): replace the broken (and unreadable)
1143 bignum version of BN_from_montgomery() with the working code from
1144 SSLeay 0.9.0 (the word based version is faster anyway), and clean up
1145 the comments.
1146 [Ulf Möller]
1147
Bodo Möller2557eae2000-01-24 17:57:56 +00001148 *) Avoid a race condition in s2_clnt.c (function get_server_hello) that
1149 made it impossible to use the same SSL_SESSION data structure in
1150 SSL2 clients in multiple threads.
1151 [Bodo Moeller]
1152
Bodo Möllera46faa22000-01-24 16:02:29 +00001153 *) The return value of RAND_load_file() no longer counts bytes obtained
1154 by stat(). RAND_load_file(..., -1) is new and uses the complete file
1155 to seed the PRNG (previously an explicit byte count was required).
1156 [Ulf Möller, Bodo Möller]
Bodo Mölleraabbb742000-01-24 14:42:26 +00001157
Dr. Stephen Hensondd9d2332000-01-23 23:41:49 +00001158 *) Clean up CRYPTO_EX_DATA functions, some of these didn't have prototypes
1159 used (char *) instead of (void *) and had casts all over the place.
1160 [Steve Henson]
1161
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001162 *) Make BN_generate_prime() return NULL on error if ret!=NULL.
1163 [Ulf Möller]
1164
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001165 *) Retain source code compatibility for BN_prime_checks macro:
1166 BN_is_prime(..., BN_prime_checks, ...) now uses
1167 BN_prime_checks_for_size to determine the appropriate number of
1168 Rabin-Miller iterations.
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001169 [Ulf Möller]
1170
1171 *) Diffie-Hellman uses "safe" primes: DH_check() return code renamed to
1172 DH_CHECK_P_NOT_SAFE_PRIME.
1173 (Check if this is true? OpenPGP calls them "strong".)
1174 [Ulf Möller]
1175
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +00001176 *) Merge the functionality of "dh" and "gendh" programs into a new program
1177 "dhparam". The old programs are retained for now but will handle DH keys
1178 (instead of parameters) in future.
1179 [Steve Henson]
1180
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +00001181 *) Make the ciphers, s_server and s_client programs check the return values
1182 when a new cipher list is set.
1183 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson018e57c2000-01-22 03:17:06 +00001184
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +00001185 *) Enhance the SSL/TLS cipher mechanism to correctly handle the TLS 56bit
1186 ciphers. Before when the 56bit ciphers were enabled the sorting was
1187 wrong.
1188
1189 The syntax for the cipher sorting has been extended to support sorting by
1190 cipher-strength (using the strength_bits hard coded in the tables).
1191 The new command is "@STRENGTH" (see also doc/apps/ciphers.pod).
1192
1193 Fix a bug in the cipher-command parser: when supplying a cipher command
1194 string with an "undefined" symbol (neither command nor alphanumeric
1195 [A-Za-z0-9], ssl_set_cipher_list used to hang in an endless loop. Now
1196 an error is flagged.
1197
1198 Due to the strength-sorting extension, the code of the
1199 ssl_create_cipher_list() function was completely rearranged. I hope that
1200 the readability was also increased :-)
1201 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE>]
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +00001202
Dr. Stephen Henson81004902000-01-21 02:42:14 +00001203 *) Minor change to 'x509' utility. The -CAcreateserial option now uses 1
1204 for the first serial number and places 2 in the serial number file. This
1205 avoids problems when the root CA is created with serial number zero and
1206 the first user certificate has the same issuer name and serial number
1207 as the root CA.
1208 [Steve Henson]
1209
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +00001210 *) Fixes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities, change the 'req' program so it uses
1211 the new code. Add documentation for this stuff.
1212 [Steve Henson]
1213
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +00001214 *) Changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities. These have been renamed from
1215 X509_*() to X509at_*() on the grounds that they don't handle X509
1216 structures and behave in an analagous way to the X509v3 functions:
1217 they shouldn't be called directly but wrapper functions should be used
1218 instead.
1219
1220 So we also now have some wrapper functions that call the X509at functions
1221 when passed certificate requests. (TO DO: similar things can be done with
1222 PKCS#7 signed and unsigned attributes, PKCS#12 attributes and a few other
1223 things. Some of these need some d2i or i2d and print functionality
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +00001224 because they handle more complex structures.)
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +00001225 [Steve Henson]
1226
Ulf Mölleraa82db42000-01-16 21:10:00 +00001227 *) Add missing #ifndefs that caused missing symbols when building libssl
1228 as a shared library without RSA. Use #ifndef NO_SSL2 instead of
1229 NO_RSA in ssl/s2*.c.
1230 [Kris Kennaway <kris@hub.freebsd.org>, modified by Ulf Möller]
1231
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +00001232 *) Precautions against using the PRNG uninitialized: RAND_bytes() now
Bodo Möller09837602000-01-13 21:20:26 +00001233 has a return value which indicates the quality of the random data
1234 (1 = ok, 0 = not seeded). Also an error is recorded on the thread's
Ulf Möller373b5752000-01-16 15:58:17 +00001235 error queue. New function RAND_pseudo_bytes() generates output that is
Bodo Möller853f7572000-02-19 15:22:53 +00001236 guaranteed to be unique but not unpredictable. RAND_add is like
1237 RAND_seed, but takes an extra argument for an entropy estimate
1238 (RAND_seed always assumes full entropy).
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +00001239 [Ulf Möller]
1240
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +00001241 *) Do more iterations of Rabin-Miller probable prime test (specifically,
1242 3 for 1024-bit primes, 6 for 512-bit primes, 12 for 256-bit primes
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001243 instead of only 2 for all lengths; see BN_prime_checks_for_size definition
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001244 in crypto/bn/bn_prime.c for the complete table). This guarantees a
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001245 false-positive rate of at most 2^-80 for random input.
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +00001246 [Bodo Moeller]
1247
Bodo Möller3cc6cde2000-01-11 08:09:27 +00001248 *) Rewrite ssl3_read_n (ssl/s3_pkt.c) avoiding a couple of bugs.
Bodo Möllerc51ae172000-01-11 01:07:26 +00001249 [Bodo Moeller]
1250
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001251 *) New function X509_CTX_rget_chain() (renamed to X509_CTX_get1_chain
1252 in the 0.9.5 release), this returns the chain
Dr. Stephen Henson25f923d2000-01-09 14:21:40 +00001253 from an X509_CTX structure with a dup of the stack and all
1254 the X509 reference counts upped: so the stack will exist
1255 after X509_CTX_cleanup() has been called. Modify pkcs12.c
1256 to use this.
1257
1258 Also make SSL_SESSION_print() print out the verify return
1259 code.
1260 [Steve Henson]
1261
Dr. Stephen Hensondad666f2000-01-08 03:16:04 +00001262 *) Add manpage for the pkcs12 command. Also change the default
1263 behaviour so MAC iteration counts are used unless the new
1264 -nomaciter option is used. This improves file security and
1265 only older versions of MSIE (4.0 for example) need it.
1266 [Steve Henson]
1267
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001268 *) Honor the no-xxx Configure options when creating .DEF files.
1269 [Ulf Möller]
1270
Dr. Stephen Henson35f48502000-01-07 00:55:54 +00001271 *) Add PKCS#10 attributes to field table: challengePassword,
1272 unstructuredName and unstructuredAddress. These are taken from
1273 draft PKCS#9 v2.0 but are compatible with v1.2 provided no
1274 international characters are used.
1275
1276 More changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE code: allow the setting of types
1277 based on strings. Remove the 'loc' parameter when adding
1278 attributes because these will be a SET OF encoding which is sorted
1279 in ASN1 order.
1280 [Steve Henson]
1281
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001282 *) Initial changes to the 'req' utility to allow request generation
1283 automation. This will allow an application to just generate a template
1284 file containing all the field values and have req construct the
1285 request.
1286
1287 Initial support for X509_ATTRIBUTE handling. Stacks of these are
1288 used all over the place including certificate requests and PKCS#7
1289 structures. They are currently handled manually where necessary with
1290 some primitive wrappers for PKCS#7. The new functions behave in a
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001291 manner analogous to the X509 extension functions: they allow
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001292 attributes to be looked up by NID and added.
1293
1294 Later something similar to the X509V3 code would be desirable to
1295 automatically handle the encoding, decoding and printing of the
1296 more complex types. The string types like challengePassword can
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001297 be handled by the string table functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001298
1299 Also modified the multi byte string table handling. Now there is
1300 a 'global mask' which masks out certain types. The table itself
1301 can use the flag STABLE_NO_MASK to ignore the mask setting: this
1302 is useful when for example there is only one permissible type
1303 (as in countryName) and using the mask might result in no valid
1304 types at all.
1305 [Steve Henson]
1306
Bodo Möllerca031092000-01-06 01:19:17 +00001307 *) Clean up 'Finished' handling, and add functions SSL_get_finished and
1308 SSL_get_peer_finished to allow applications to obtain the latest
1309 Finished messages sent to the peer or expected from the peer,
1310 respectively. (SSL_get_peer_finished is usually the Finished message
1311 actually received from the peer, otherwise the protocol will be aborted.)
1312
1313 As the Finished message are message digests of the complete handshake
1314 (with a total of 192 bits for TLS 1.0 and more for SSL 3.0), they can
1315 be used for external authentication procedures when the authentication
1316 provided by SSL/TLS is not desired or is not enough.
Bodo Möllerf2d9a322000-01-06 00:24:24 +00001317 [Bodo Moeller]
1318
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +00001319 *) Enhanced support for Alpha Linux is added. Now ./config checks if
1320 the host supports BWX extension and if Compaq C is present on the
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001321 $PATH. Just exploiting of the BWX extension results in 20-30%
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +00001322 performance kick for some algorithms, e.g. DES and RC4 to mention
1323 a couple. Compaq C in turn generates ~20% faster code for MD5 and
1324 SHA1.
1325 [Andy Polyakov]
1326
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +00001327 *) Add support for MS "fast SGC". This is arguably a violation of the
1328 SSL3/TLS protocol. Netscape SGC does two handshakes: the first with
1329 weak crypto and after checking the certificate is SGC a second one
1330 with strong crypto. MS SGC stops the first handshake after receiving
1331 the server certificate message and sends a second client hello. Since
1332 a server will typically do all the time consuming operations before
1333 expecting any further messages from the client (server key exchange
1334 is the most expensive) there is little difference between the two.
1335
1336 To get OpenSSL to support MS SGC we have to permit a second client
1337 hello message after we have sent server done. In addition we have to
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +00001338 reset the MAC if we do get this second client hello.
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +00001339 [Steve Henson]
1340
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +00001341 *) Add a function 'd2i_AutoPrivateKey()' this will automatically decide
1342 if a DER encoded private key is RSA or DSA traditional format. Changed
1343 d2i_PrivateKey_bio() to use it. This is only needed for the "traditional"
1344 format DER encoded private key. Newer code should use PKCS#8 format which
1345 has the key type encoded in the ASN1 structure. Added DER private key
1346 support to pkcs8 application.
1347 [Steve Henson]
1348
Bodo Möller47134b71999-12-29 17:43:03 +00001349 *) SSL 3/TLS 1 servers now don't request certificates when an anonymous
1350 ciphersuites has been selected (as required by the SSL 3/TLS 1
1351 specifications). Exception: When SSL_VERIFY_FAIL_IF_NO_PEER_CERT
1352 is set, we interpret this as a request to violate the specification
1353 (the worst that can happen is a handshake failure, and 'correct'
1354 behaviour would result in a handshake failure anyway).
1355 [Bodo Moeller]
1356
Bodo Möller45fd4db1999-12-29 14:29:32 +00001357 *) In SSL_CTX_add_session, take into account that there might be multiple
1358 SSL_SESSION structures with the same session ID (e.g. when two threads
1359 concurrently obtain them from an external cache).
1360 The internal cache can handle only one SSL_SESSION with a given ID,
1361 so if there's a conflict, we now throw out the old one to achieve
1362 consistency.
1363 [Bodo Moeller]
1364
Dr. Stephen Hensonf45f40f1999-12-29 02:59:18 +00001365 *) Add OIDs for idea and blowfish in CBC mode. This will allow both
1366 to be used in PKCS#5 v2.0 and S/MIME. Also add checking to
1367 some routines that use cipher OIDs: some ciphers do not have OIDs
1368 defined and so they cannot be used for S/MIME and PKCS#5 v2.0 for
1369 example.
1370 [Steve Henson]
1371
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +00001372 *) Simplify the trust setting structure and code. Now we just have
1373 two sequences of OIDs for trusted and rejected settings. These will
1374 typically have values the same as the extended key usage extension
1375 and any application specific purposes.
1376
1377 The trust checking code now has a default behaviour: it will just
1378 check for an object with the same NID as the passed id. Functions can
1379 be provided to override either the default behaviour or the behaviour
1380 for a given id. SSL client, server and email already have functions
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +00001381 in place for compatibility: they check the NID and also return "trusted"
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +00001382 if the certificate is self signed.
1383 [Steve Henson]
1384
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +00001385 *) Add d2i,i2d bio/fp functions for PrivateKey: these convert the
1386 traditional format into an EVP_PKEY structure.
1387 [Steve Henson]
1388
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +00001389 *) Add a password callback function PEM_cb() which either prompts for
1390 a password if usr_data is NULL or otherwise assumes it is a null
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +00001391 terminated password. Allow passwords to be passed on command line
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +00001392 environment or config files in a few more utilities.
1393 [Steve Henson]
1394
Dr. Stephen Henson525f51f1999-12-23 02:02:42 +00001395 *) Add a bunch of DER and PEM functions to handle PKCS#8 format private
1396 keys. Add some short names for PKCS#8 PBE algorithms and allow them
1397 to be specified on the command line for the pkcs8 and pkcs12 utilities.
1398 Update documentation.
1399 [Steve Henson]
1400
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +00001401 *) Support for ASN1 "NULL" type. This could be handled before by using
1402 ASN1_TYPE but there wasn't any function that would try to read a NULL
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001403 and produce an error if it couldn't. For compatibility we also have
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +00001404 ASN1_NULL_new() and ASN1_NULL_free() functions but these are faked and
1405 don't allocate anything because they don't need to.
1406 [Steve Henson]
1407
Andy Polyakov099f1b31999-12-19 16:17:45 +00001408 *) Initial support for MacOS is now provided. Examine INSTALL.MacOS
1409 for details.
1410 [Andy Polyakov, Roy Woods <roy@centicsystems.ca>]
1411
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +00001412 *) Rebuild of the memory allocation routines used by OpenSSL code and
1413 possibly others as well. The purpose is to make an interface that
1414 provide hooks so anyone can build a separate set of allocation and
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001415 deallocation routines to be used by OpenSSL, for example memory
1416 pool implementations, or something else, which was previously hard
1417 since Malloc(), Realloc() and Free() were defined as macros having
Richard Levittede73e392000-01-11 22:32:37 +00001418 the values malloc, realloc and free, respectively (except for Win32
1419 compilations). The same is provided for memory debugging code.
1420 OpenSSL already comes with functionality to find memory leaks, but
1421 this gives people a chance to debug other memory problems.
Richard Levitted8df48a1999-12-18 01:14:39 +00001422
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001423 With these changes, a new set of functions and macros have appeared:
1424
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +00001425 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() [F]
1426 CRYPTO_get_mem_debug_functions() [F]
1427 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options() [F]
1428 CRYPTO_dbg_get_options() [F]
1429 CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() [M]
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001430
1431 The memory debug functions are NULL by default, unless the library
1432 is compiled with CRYPTO_MDEBUG or friends is defined. If someone
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001433 wants to debug memory anyway, CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() (which
1434 gives the standard debugging functions that come with OpenSSL) or
1435 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() (tells OpenSSL to use functions
1436 provided by the library user) must be used. When the standard
1437 debugging functions are used, CRYPTO_dbg_set_options can be used to
1438 request additional information:
1439 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options(V_CYRPTO_MDEBUG_xxx) corresponds to setting
1440 the CRYPTO_MDEBUG_xxx macro when compiling the library.
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001441
1442 Also, things like CRYPTO_set_mem_functions will always give the
1443 expected result (the new set of functions is used for allocation
1444 and deallocation) at all times, regardless of platform and compiler
1445 options.
1446
1447 To finish it up, some functions that were never use in any other
1448 way than through macros have a new API and new semantic:
1449
1450 CRYPTO_dbg_malloc()
1451 CRYPTO_dbg_realloc()
1452 CRYPTO_dbg_free()
1453
1454 All macros of value have retained their old syntax.
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001455 [Richard Levitte and Bodo Moeller]
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +00001456
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2166641999-12-11 20:04:06 +00001457 *) Some S/MIME fixes. The OID for SMIMECapabilities was wrong, the
1458 ordering of SMIMECapabilities wasn't in "strength order" and there
1459 was a missing NULL in the AlgorithmIdentifier for the SHA1 signature
1460 algorithm.
1461 [Steve Henson]
1462
Dr. Stephen Hensond8223ef1999-12-10 13:46:48 +00001463 *) Some ASN1 types with illegal zero length encoding (INTEGER,
1464 ENUMERATED and OBJECT IDENTIFIER) choked the ASN1 routines.
1465 [Frans Heymans <fheymans@isaserver.be>, modified by Steve Henson]
1466
Dr. Stephen Henson5a9a4b21999-12-05 00:40:59 +00001467 *) Merge in my S/MIME library for OpenSSL. This provides a simple
1468 S/MIME API on top of the PKCS#7 code, a MIME parser (with enough
1469 functionality to handle multipart/signed properly) and a utility
1470 called 'smime' to call all this stuff. This is based on code I
1471 originally wrote for Celo who have kindly allowed it to be
1472 included in OpenSSL.
1473 [Steve Henson]
1474
Bodo Möllercddfe781999-12-03 20:24:21 +00001475 *) Add variants des_set_key_checked and des_set_key_unchecked of
1476 des_set_key (aka des_key_sched). Global variable des_check_key
1477 decides which of these is called by des_set_key; this way
1478 des_check_key behaves as it always did, but applications and
1479 the library itself, which was buggy for des_check_key == 1,
1480 have a cleaner way to pick the version they need.
1481 [Bodo Moeller]
1482
Dr. Stephen Henson21131f01999-12-03 03:46:18 +00001483 *) New function PKCS12_newpass() which changes the password of a
1484 PKCS12 structure.
1485 [Steve Henson]
1486
Dr. Stephen Hensondd413411999-12-02 02:33:56 +00001487 *) Modify X509_TRUST and X509_PURPOSE so it also uses a static and
1488 dynamic mix. In both cases the ids can be used as an index into the
1489 table. Also modified the X509_TRUST_add() and X509_PURPOSE_add()
1490 functions so they accept a list of the field values and the
1491 application doesn't need to directly manipulate the X509_TRUST
1492 structure.
1493 [Steve Henson]
1494
1495 *) Modify the ASN1_STRING_TABLE stuff so it also uses bsearch and doesn't
1496 need initialising.
1497 [Steve Henson]
1498
Dr. Stephen Henson08cba611999-12-01 01:49:46 +00001499 *) Modify the way the V3 extension code looks up extensions. This now
1500 works in a similar way to the object code: we have some "standard"
1501 extensions in a static table which is searched with OBJ_bsearch()
1502 and the application can add dynamic ones if needed. The file
1503 crypto/x509v3/ext_dat.h now has the info: this file needs to be
1504 updated whenever a new extension is added to the core code and kept
1505 in ext_nid order. There is a simple program 'tabtest.c' which checks
1506 this. New extensions are not added too often so this file can readily
1507 be maintained manually.
1508
1509 There are two big advantages in doing things this way. The extensions
1510 can be looked up immediately and no longer need to be "added" using
1511 X509V3_add_standard_extensions(): this function now does nothing.
1512 [Side note: I get *lots* of email saying the extension code doesn't
1513 work because people forget to call this function]
1514 Also no dynamic allocation is done unless new extensions are added:
1515 so if we don't add custom extensions there is no need to call
1516 X509V3_EXT_cleanup().
1517 [Steve Henson]
1518
Ben Lauriefea9afb1999-11-30 20:15:19 +00001519 *) Modify enc utility's salting as follows: make salting the default. Add a
1520 magic header, so unsalted files fail gracefully instead of just decrypting
1521 to garbage. This is because not salting is a big security hole, so people
1522 should be discouraged from doing it.
1523 [Ben Laurie]
1524
Dr. Stephen Henson98682321999-11-27 01:14:04 +00001525 *) Fixes and enhancements to the 'x509' utility. It allowed a message
1526 digest to be passed on the command line but it only used this
1527 parameter when signing a certificate. Modified so all relevant
1528 operations are affected by the digest parameter including the
1529 -fingerprint and -x509toreq options. Also -x509toreq choked if a
1530 DSA key was used because it didn't fix the digest.
1531 [Steve Henson]
1532
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001533 *) Initial certificate chain verify code. Currently tests the untrusted
1534 certificates for consistency with the verify purpose (which is set
1535 when the X509_STORE_CTX structure is set up) and checks the pathlength.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001536
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001537 There is a NO_CHAIN_VERIFY compilation option to keep the old behaviour:
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001538 this is because it will reject chains with invalid extensions whereas
1539 every previous version of OpenSSL and SSLeay made no checks at all.
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001540
1541 Trust code: checks the root CA for the relevant trust settings. Trust
1542 settings have an initial value consistent with the verify purpose: e.g.
1543 if the verify purpose is for SSL client use it expects the CA to be
1544 trusted for SSL client use. However the default value can be changed to
1545 permit custom trust settings: one example of this would be to only trust
1546 certificates from a specific "secure" set of CAs.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001547
1548 Also added X509_STORE_CTX_new() and X509_STORE_CTX_free() functions
1549 which should be used for version portability: especially since the
1550 verify structure is likely to change more often now.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001551
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001552 SSL integration. Add purpose and trust to SSL_CTX and SSL and functions
1553 to set them. If not set then assume SSL clients will verify SSL servers
1554 and vice versa.
1555
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001556 Two new options to the verify program: -untrusted allows a set of
1557 untrusted certificates to be passed in and -purpose which sets the
1558 intended purpose of the certificate. If a purpose is set then the
1559 new chain verify code is used to check extension consistency.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001560 [Steve Henson]
1561
1562 *) Support for the authority information access extension.
Dr. Stephen Henson6d3724d1999-11-23 18:50:28 +00001563 [Steve Henson]
1564
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001565 *) Modify RSA and DSA PEM read routines to transparently handle
1566 PKCS#8 format private keys. New *_PUBKEY_* functions that handle
1567 public keys in a format compatible with certificate
1568 SubjectPublicKeyInfo structures. Unfortunately there were already
1569 functions called *_PublicKey_* which used various odd formats so
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001570 these are retained for compatibility: however the DSA variants were
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001571 never in a public release so they have been deleted. Changed dsa/rsa
1572 utilities to handle the new format: note no releases ever handled public
1573 keys so we should be OK.
1574
1575 The primary motivation for this change is to avoid the same fiasco
1576 that dogs private keys: there are several incompatible private key
1577 formats some of which are standard and some OpenSSL specific and
1578 require various evil hacks to allow partial transparent handling and
1579 even then it doesn't work with DER formats. Given the option anything
1580 other than PKCS#8 should be dumped: but the other formats have to
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001581 stay in the name of compatibility.
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001582
1583 With public keys and the benefit of hindsight one standard format
1584 is used which works with EVP_PKEY, RSA or DSA structures: though
1585 it clearly returns an error if you try to read the wrong kind of key.
1586
1587 Added a -pubkey option to the 'x509' utility to output the public key.
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001588 Also rename the EVP_PKEY_get_*() to EVP_PKEY_rget_*()
1589 (renamed to EVP_PKEY_get1_*() in the OpenSSL 0.9.5 release) and add
1590 EVP_PKEY_rset_*() functions (renamed to EVP_PKEY_set1_*())
1591 that do the same as the EVP_PKEY_assign_*() except they up the
1592 reference count of the added key (they don't "swallow" the
1593 supplied key).
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001594 [Steve Henson]
1595
1596 *) Fixes to crypto/x509/by_file.c the code to read in certificates and
1597 CRLs would fail if the file contained no certificates or no CRLs:
1598 added a new function to read in both types and return the number
1599 read: this means that if none are read it will be an error. The
1600 DER versions of the certificate and CRL reader would always fail
1601 because it isn't possible to mix certificates and CRLs in DER format
1602 without choking one or the other routine. Changed this to just read
1603 a certificate: this is the best we can do. Also modified the code
1604 in apps/verify.c to take notice of return codes: it was previously
1605 attempting to read in certificates from NULL pointers and ignoring
1606 any errors: this is one reason why the cert and CRL reader seemed
1607 to work. It doesn't check return codes from the default certificate
1608 routines: these may well fail if the certificates aren't installed.
1609 [Steve Henson]
1610
Dr. Stephen Hensona716d721999-11-19 02:19:58 +00001611 *) Code to support otherName option in GeneralName.
1612 [Steve Henson]
1613
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001614 *) First update to verify code. Change the verify utility
1615 so it warns if it is passed a self signed certificate:
1616 for consistency with the normal behaviour. X509_verify
1617 has been modified to it will now verify a self signed
1618 certificate if *exactly* the same certificate appears
1619 in the store: it was previously impossible to trust a
1620 single self signed certificate. This means that:
1621 openssl verify ss.pem
1622 now gives a warning about a self signed certificate but
1623 openssl verify -CAfile ss.pem ss.pem
1624 is OK.
1625 [Steve Henson]
1626
Bodo Möllerb1fe6ca1999-11-16 23:15:41 +00001627 *) For servers, store verify_result in SSL_SESSION data structure
1628 (and add it to external session representation).
1629 This is needed when client certificate verifications fails,
1630 but an application-provided verification callback (set by
1631 SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback) allows accepting the session
1632 anyway (i.e. leaves x509_store_ctx->error != X509_V_OK
1633 but returns 1): When the session is reused, we have to set
1634 ssl->verify_result to the appropriate error code to avoid
1635 security holes.
1636 [Bodo Moeller, problem pointed out by Lutz Jaenicke]
1637
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001638 *) Fix a bug in the new PKCS#7 code: it didn't consider the
1639 case in PKCS7_dataInit() where the signed PKCS7 structure
1640 didn't contain any existing data because it was being created.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001641 [Po-Cheng Chen <pocheng@nst.com.tw>, slightly modified by Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001642
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd699ac1999-11-16 02:49:25 +00001643 *) Add a salt to the key derivation routines in enc.c. This
1644 forms the first 8 bytes of the encrypted file. Also add a
1645 -S option to allow a salt to be input on the command line.
1646 [Steve Henson]
1647
Dr. Stephen Hensone947f391999-11-16 00:56:03 +00001648 *) New function X509_cmp(). Oddly enough there wasn't a function
1649 to compare two certificates. We do this by working out the SHA1
1650 hash and comparing that. X509_cmp() will be needed by the trust
1651 code.
1652 [Steve Henson]
1653
Bodo Möller07e6dbd2000-01-28 21:26:30 +00001654 *) SSL_get1_session() is like SSL_get_session(), but increments
1655 the reference count in the SSL_SESSION returned.
Mark J. Coxb7cfcfb1999-11-15 16:31:31 +00001656 [Geoff Thorpe <geoff@eu.c2.net>]
1657
Dr. Stephen Henson06556a11999-11-14 23:10:50 +00001658 *) Fix for 'req': it was adding a null to request attributes.
1659 Also change the X509_LOOKUP and X509_INFO code to handle
1660 certificate auxiliary information.
1661 [Steve Henson]
1662
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001663 *) Add support for 40 and 64 bit RC2 and RC4 algorithms: document
1664 the 'enc' command.
1665 [Steve Henson]
1666
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001667 *) Add the possibility to add extra information to the memory leak
1668 detecting output, to form tracebacks, showing from where each
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001669 allocation was originated: CRYPTO_push_info("constant string") adds
1670 the string plus current file name and line number to a per-thread
1671 stack, CRYPTO_pop_info() does the obvious, CRYPTO_remove_all_info()
1672 is like calling CYRPTO_pop_info() until the stack is empty.
1673 Also updated memory leak detection code to be multi-thread-safe.
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001674 [Richard Levitte]
1675
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001676 *) Add options -text and -noout to pkcs7 utility and delete the
Dr. Stephen Henson954ef7e1999-11-12 01:42:25 +00001677 encryption options which never did anything. Update docs.
1678 [Steve Henson]
1679
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf298111999-11-11 18:41:31 +00001680 *) Add options to some of the utilities to allow the pass phrase
1681 to be included on either the command line (not recommended on
1682 OSes like Unix) or read from the environment. Update the
1683 manpages and fix a few bugs.
1684 [Steve Henson]
1685
Dr. Stephen Hensonaba3e651999-11-10 02:52:17 +00001686 *) Add a few manpages for some of the openssl commands.
1687 [Steve Henson]
1688
Dr. Stephen Hensona0ad17b1999-11-08 13:58:08 +00001689 *) Fix the -revoke option in ca. It was freeing up memory twice,
1690 leaking and not finding already revoked certificates.
1691 [Steve Henson]
1692
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001693 *) Extensive changes to support certificate auxiliary information.
1694 This involves the use of X509_CERT_AUX structure and X509_AUX
1695 functions. An X509_AUX function such as PEM_read_X509_AUX()
1696 can still read in a certificate file in the usual way but it
1697 will also read in any additional "auxiliary information". By
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001698 doing things this way a fair degree of compatibility can be
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001699 retained: existing certificates can have this information added
1700 using the new 'x509' options.
1701
1702 Current auxiliary information includes an "alias" and some trust
1703 settings. The trust settings will ultimately be used in enhanced
1704 certificate chain verification routines: currently a certificate
1705 can only be trusted if it is self signed and then it is trusted
1706 for all purposes.
1707 [Steve Henson]
1708
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001709 *) Fix assembler for Alpha (tested only on DEC OSF not Linux or *BSD).
1710 The problem was that one of the replacement routines had not been working
1711 since SSLeay releases. For now the offending routine has been replaced
1712 with non-optimised assembler. Even so, this now gives around 95%
1713 performance improvement for 1024 bit RSA signs.
Mark J. Coxce2c95b1999-11-03 14:10:10 +00001714 [Mark Cox]
1715
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001716 *) Hack to fix PKCS#7 decryption when used with some unorthodox RC2
1717 handling. Most clients have the effective key size in bits equal to
1718 the key length in bits: so a 40 bit RC2 key uses a 40 bit (5 byte) key.
1719 A few however don't do this and instead use the size of the decrypted key
1720 to determine the RC2 key length and the AlgorithmIdentifier to determine
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001721 the effective key length. In this case the effective key length can still
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001722 be 40 bits but the key length can be 168 bits for example. This is fixed
1723 by manually forcing an RC2 key into the EVP_PKEY structure because the
1724 EVP code can't currently handle unusual RC2 key sizes: it always assumes
1725 the key length and effective key length are equal.
1726 [Steve Henson]
1727
Dr. Stephen Henson74400f71999-10-27 00:15:11 +00001728 *) Add a bunch of functions that should simplify the creation of
1729 X509_NAME structures. Now you should be able to do:
1730 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, "CN", MBSTRING_ASC, "Steve", -1, -1, 0);
1731 and have it automatically work out the correct field type and fill in
1732 the structures. The more adventurous can try:
1733 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, field, MBSTRING_UTF8, str, -1, -1, 0);
1734 and it will (hopefully) work out the correct multibyte encoding.
1735 [Steve Henson]
1736
1737 *) Change the 'req' utility to use the new field handling and multibyte
1738 copy routines. Before the DN field creation was handled in an ad hoc
1739 way in req, ca, and x509 which was rather broken and didn't support
1740 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings. Since some software doesn't implement
1741 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings yet, they can be enabled using the config file
1742 using the dirstring_type option. See the new comment in the default
1743 openssl.cnf for more info.
1744 [Steve Henson]
1745
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001746 *) Make crypto/rand/md_rand.c more robust:
Bodo Möller62ac2931999-10-26 16:26:48 +00001747 - Assure unique random numbers after fork().
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001748 - Make sure that concurrent threads access the global counter and
1749 md serializably so that we never lose entropy in them
1750 or use exactly the same state in multiple threads.
1751 Access to the large state is not always serializable because
1752 the additional locking could be a performance killer, and
1753 md should be large enough anyway.
1754 [Bodo Moeller]
1755
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001756 *) New file apps/app_rand.c with commonly needed functionality
1757 for handling the random seed file.
1758
1759 Use the random seed file in some applications that previously did not:
1760 ca,
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001761 dsaparam -genkey (which also ignored its '-rand' option),
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001762 s_client,
1763 s_server,
1764 x509 (when signing).
1765 Except on systems with /dev/urandom, it is crucial to have a random
1766 seed file at least for key creation, DSA signing, and for DH exchanges;
Bodo Möller99e87561999-10-26 11:19:42 +00001767 for RSA signatures we could do without one.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001768
1769 gendh and gendsa (unlike genrsa) used to read only the first byte
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001770 of each file listed in the '-rand' option. The function as previously
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001771 found in genrsa is now in app_rand.c and is used by all programs
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001772 that support '-rand'.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001773 [Bodo Moeller]
1774
1775 *) In RAND_write_file, use mode 0600 for creating files;
1776 don't just chmod when it may be too late.
1777 [Bodo Moeller]
1778
1779 *) Report an error from X509_STORE_load_locations
1780 when X509_LOOKUP_load_file or X509_LOOKUP_add_dir failed.
1781 [Bill Perry]
1782
Dr. Stephen Henson462f79e1999-10-21 13:20:49 +00001783 *) New function ASN1_mbstring_copy() this copies a string in either
1784 ASCII, Unicode, Universal (4 bytes per character) or UTF8 format
1785 into an ASN1_STRING type. A mask of permissible types is passed
1786 and it chooses the "minimal" type to use or an error if not type
1787 is suitable.
1788 [Steve Henson]
1789
Dr. Stephen Henson08e9c1a1999-10-20 01:50:23 +00001790 *) Add function equivalents to the various macros in asn1.h. The old
1791 macros are retained with an M_ prefix. Code inside the library can
1792 use the M_ macros. External code (including the openssl utility)
1793 should *NOT* in order to be "shared library friendly".
1794 [Steve Henson]
1795
Dr. Stephen Henson673b1021999-10-13 01:11:56 +00001796 *) Add various functions that can check a certificate's extensions
1797 to see if it usable for various purposes such as SSL client,
1798 server or S/MIME and CAs of these types. This is currently
1799 VERY EXPERIMENTAL but will ultimately be used for certificate chain
1800 verification. Also added a -purpose flag to x509 utility to
1801 print out all the purposes.
1802 [Steve Henson]
1803
Dr. Stephen Henson56a3fec1999-10-11 01:30:04 +00001804 *) Add a CRYPTO_EX_DATA to X509 certificate structure and associated
1805 functions.
1806 [Steve Henson]
1807
Dr. Stephen Henson4654ef91999-10-09 02:54:10 +00001808 *) New X509V3_{X509,CRL,REVOKED}_get_d2i() functions. These will search
1809 for, obtain and decode and extension and obtain its critical flag.
1810 This allows all the necessary extension code to be handled in a
1811 single function call.
1812 [Steve Henson]
1813
Andy Polyakov7e102e21999-10-07 12:10:26 +00001814 *) RC4 tune-up featuring 30-40% performance improvement on most RISC
1815 platforms. See crypto/rc4/rc4_enc.c for further details.
1816 [Andy Polyakov]
1817
Dr. Stephen Hensond71c6bc1999-10-05 13:10:21 +00001818 *) New -noout option to asn1parse. This causes no output to be produced
1819 its main use is when combined with -strparse and -out to extract data
1820 from a file (which may not be in ASN.1 format).
1821 [Steve Henson]
1822
Dr. Stephen Henson2d681b71999-10-05 12:57:50 +00001823 *) Fix for pkcs12 program. It was hashing an invalid certificate pointer
1824 when producing the local key id.
1825 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
1826
Dr. Stephen Henson3908cdf1999-10-04 23:56:06 +00001827 *) New option -dhparam in s_server. This allows a DH parameter file to be
1828 stated explicitly. If it is not stated then it tries the first server
1829 certificate file. The previous behaviour hard coded the filename
1830 "server.pem".
1831 [Steve Henson]
1832
Dr. Stephen Henson3ea23631999-10-04 21:17:47 +00001833 *) Add -pubin and -pubout options to the rsa and dsa commands. These allow
1834 a public key to be input or output. For example:
1835 openssl rsa -in key.pem -pubout -out pubkey.pem
1836 Also added necessary DSA public key functions to handle this.
1837 [Steve Henson]
1838
Dr. Stephen Henson393f2c61999-10-04 12:08:59 +00001839 *) Fix so PKCS7_dataVerify() doesn't crash if no certificates are contained
1840 in the message. This was handled by allowing
1841 X509_find_by_issuer_and_serial() to tolerate a NULL passed to it.
1842 [Steve Henson, reported by Sampo Kellomaki <sampo@mail.neuronio.pt>]
1843
1844 *) Fix for bug in d2i_ASN1_bytes(): other ASN1 functions add an extra null
1845 to the end of the strings whereas this didn't. This would cause problems
1846 if strings read with d2i_ASN1_bytes() were later modified.
1847 [Steve Henson, reported by Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
1848
Dr. Stephen Henson4579dd51999-10-02 13:33:06 +00001849 *) Fix for base64 decode bug. When a base64 bio reads only one line of
1850 data and it contains EOF it will end up returning an error. This is
1851 caused by input 46 bytes long. The cause is due to the way base64
1852 BIOs find the start of base64 encoded data. They do this by trying a
1853 trial decode on each line until they find one that works. When they
1854 do a flag is set and it starts again knowing it can pass all the
1855 data directly through the decoder. Unfortunately it doesn't reset
1856 the context it uses. This means that if EOF is reached an attempt
1857 is made to pass two EOFs through the context and this causes the
1858 resulting error. This can also cause other problems as well. As is
1859 usual with these problems it takes *ages* to find and the fix is
1860 trivial: move one line.
1861 [Steve Henson, reported by ian@uns.ns.ac.yu (Ivan Nejgebauer) ]
1862
Dr. Stephen Henson06f45361999-09-20 22:09:17 +00001863 *) Ugly workaround to get s_client and s_server working under Windows. The
1864 old code wouldn't work because it needed to select() on sockets and the
1865 tty (for keypresses and to see if data could be written). Win32 only
1866 supports select() on sockets so we select() with a 1s timeout on the
1867 sockets and then see if any characters are waiting to be read, if none
1868 are present then we retry, we also assume we can always write data to
1869 the tty. This isn't nice because the code then blocks until we've
1870 received a complete line of data and it is effectively polling the
1871 keyboard at 1s intervals: however it's quite a bit better than not
1872 working at all :-) A dedicated Windows application might handle this
1873 with an event loop for example.
1874 [Steve Henson]
1875
Dr. Stephen Henson1c800191999-09-18 22:37:44 +00001876 *) Enhance RSA_METHOD structure. Now there are two extra methods, rsa_sign
1877 and rsa_verify. When the RSA_FLAGS_SIGN_VER option is set these functions
1878 will be called when RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() are used. This is useful
1879 if rsa_pub_dec() and rsa_priv_enc() equivalents are not available.
1880 For this to work properly RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt()
1881 should *not* be used: RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() must be used instead.
1882 This necessitated the support of an extra signature type NID_md5_sha1
1883 for SSL signatures and modifications to the SSL library to use it instead
1884 of calling RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt().
1885 [Steve Henson]
1886
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00001887 *) Add new -verify -CAfile and -CApath options to the crl program, these
1888 will lookup a CRL issuers certificate and verify the signature in a
1889 similar way to the verify program. Tidy up the crl program so it
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001890 no longer accesses structures directly. Make the ASN1 CRL parsing a bit
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00001891 less strict. It will now permit CRL extensions even if it is not
1892 a V2 CRL: this will allow it to tolerate some broken CRLs.
1893 [Steve Henson]
1894
Bodo Möller396f6311999-09-08 21:58:13 +00001895 *) Initialize all non-automatic variables each time one of the openssl
1896 sub-programs is started (this is necessary as they may be started
1897 multiple times from the "OpenSSL>" prompt).
1898 [Lennart Bang, Bodo Moeller]
1899
Dr. Stephen Henson4a61a641999-09-08 18:02:25 +00001900 *) Preliminary compilation option RSA_NULL which disables RSA crypto without
1901 removing all other RSA functionality (this is what NO_RSA does). This
1902 is so (for example) those in the US can disable those operations covered
1903 by the RSA patent while allowing storage and parsing of RSA keys and RSA
1904 key generation.
1905 [Steve Henson]
1906
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +00001907 *) Non-copying interface to BIO pairs.
Bodo Möller6f7af151999-09-10 14:03:21 +00001908 (still largely untested)
Bodo Möllerc1082a91999-09-07 21:37:09 +00001909 [Bodo Moeller]
1910
Dr. Stephen Hensona785abc1999-09-07 12:16:29 +00001911 *) New function ANS1_tag2str() to convert an ASN1 tag to a descriptive
1912 ASCII string. This was handled independently in various places before.
1913 [Steve Henson]
1914
Dr. Stephen Hensonaef838f1999-09-04 17:19:55 +00001915 *) New functions UTF8_getc() and UTF8_putc() that parse and generate
1916 UTF8 strings a character at a time.
1917 [Steve Henson]
1918
Bodo Möller074309b1999-09-03 16:33:11 +00001919 *) Use client_version from client hello to select the protocol
1920 (s23_srvr.c) and for RSA client key exchange verification
1921 (s3_srvr.c), as required by the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 specifications.
1922 [Bodo Moeller]
1923
Dr. Stephen Henson8ce97161999-09-03 01:08:34 +00001924 *) Add various utility functions to handle SPKACs, these were previously
1925 handled by poking round in the structure internals. Added new function
1926 NETSCAPE_SPKI_print() to print out SPKAC and a new utility 'spkac' to
1927 print, verify and generate SPKACs. Based on an original idea from
1928 Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@comune.modena.it> but extensively modified.
1929 [Steve Henson]
1930
Andy Polyakov2d4287d1999-08-28 13:18:25 +00001931 *) RIPEMD160 is operational on all platforms and is back in 'make test'.
1932 [Andy Polyakov]
1933
Dr. Stephen Henson87a25f91999-08-27 00:08:17 +00001934 *) Allow the config file extension section to be overwritten on the
1935 command line. Based on an original idea from Massimiliano Pala
1936 <madwolf@comune.modena.it>. The new option is called -extensions
1937 and can be applied to ca, req and x509. Also -reqexts to override
1938 the request extensions in req and -crlexts to override the crl extensions
1939 in ca.
1940 [Steve Henson]
1941
Dr. Stephen Hensonf9150e51999-08-25 23:18:23 +00001942 *) Add new feature to the SPKAC handling in ca. Now you can include
1943 the same field multiple times by preceding it by "XXXX." for example:
1944 1.OU="Unit name 1"
1945 2.OU="Unit name 2"
1946 this is the same syntax as used in the req config file.
1947 [Steve Henson]
1948
Dr. Stephen Hensonc79b16e1999-08-25 16:59:26 +00001949 *) Allow certificate extensions to be added to certificate requests. These
1950 are specified in a 'req_extensions' option of the req section of the
1951 config file. They can be printed out with the -text option to req but
1952 are otherwise ignored at present.
1953 [Steve Henson]
1954
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00001955 *) Fix a horrible bug in enc_read() in crypto/evp/bio_enc.c: if the first
Bodo Möller0f7e6fe1999-09-24 20:24:24 +00001956 data read consists of only the final block it would not decrypted because
Dr. Stephen Henson7b65c321999-08-24 13:21:35 +00001957 EVP_CipherUpdate() would correctly report zero bytes had been decrypted.
1958 A misplaced 'break' also meant the decrypted final block might not be
1959 copied until the next read.
1960 [Steve Henson]
1961
Dr. Stephen Henson13066ce1999-08-23 23:11:32 +00001962 *) Initial support for DH_METHOD. Again based on RSA_METHOD. Also added
1963 a few extra parameters to the DH structure: these will be useful if
1964 for example we want the value of 'q' or implement X9.42 DH.
1965 [Steve Henson]
1966
Dr. Stephen Hensonc0711f71999-08-22 17:57:38 +00001967 *) Initial support for DSA_METHOD. This is based on the RSA_METHOD and
1968 provides hooks that allow the default DSA functions or functions on a
1969 "per key" basis to be replaced. This allows hardware acceleration and
1970 hardware key storage to be handled without major modification to the
1971 library. Also added low level modexp hooks and CRYPTO_EX structure and
1972 associated functions.
1973 [Steve Henson]
1974
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +00001975 *) Add a new flag to memory BIOs, BIO_FLAG_MEM_RDONLY. This marks the BIO
1976 as "read only": it can't be written to and the buffer it points to will
1977 not be freed. Reading from a read only BIO is much more efficient than
1978 a normal memory BIO. This was added because there are several times when
1979 an area of memory needs to be read from a BIO. The previous method was
1980 to create a memory BIO and write the data to it, this results in two
1981 copies of the data and an O(n^2) reading algorithm. There is a new
1982 function BIO_new_mem_buf() which creates a read only memory BIO from
1983 an area of memory. Also modified the PKCS#7 routines to use read only
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001984 memory BIOs.
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +00001985 [Steve Henson]
1986
Bodo Möllerde1915e1999-08-18 17:14:42 +00001987 *) Bugfix: ssl23_get_client_hello did not work properly when called in
1988 state SSL23_ST_SR_CLNT_HELLO_B, i.e. when the first 7 bytes of
1989 a SSLv2-compatible client hello for SSLv3 or TLSv1 could be read,
1990 but a retry condition occured while trying to read the rest.
1991 [Bodo Moeller]
1992
Dr. Stephen Hensonc6c34501999-08-17 12:58:01 +00001993 *) The PKCS7_ENC_CONTENT_new() function was setting the content type as
1994 NID_pkcs7_encrypted by default: this was wrong since this should almost
1995 always be NID_pkcs7_data. Also modified the PKCS7_set_type() to handle
1996 the encrypted data type: this is a more sensible place to put it and it
1997 allows the PKCS#12 code to be tidied up that duplicated this
1998 functionality.
1999 [Steve Henson]
2000
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00002001 *) Changed obj_dat.pl script so it takes its input and output files on
2002 the command line. This should avoid shell escape redirection problems
2003 under Win32.
2004 [Steve Henson]
2005
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +00002006 *) Initial support for certificate extension requests, these are included
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00002007 in things like Xenroll certificate requests. Included functions to allow
2008 extensions to be obtained and added.
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +00002009 [Steve Henson]
2010
Bodo Möller1b1a6e71999-08-09 13:01:48 +00002011 *) -crlf option to s_client and s_server for sending newlines as
2012 CRLF (as required by many protocols).
2013 [Bodo Moeller]
2014
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +00002015 Changes between 0.9.3a and 0.9.4 [09 Aug 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +00002016
Bodo Möller9a577e21999-08-08 22:41:24 +00002017 *) Install libRSAglue.a when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
Ralf S. Engelschalldfbaf951999-08-08 19:12:26 +00002018 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002019
Ralf S. Engelschall96395151999-08-08 10:15:43 +00002020 *) A few more ``#ifndef NO_FP_API / #endif'' pairs for consistency.
2021 [Andrija Antonijevic <TheAntony2@bigfoot.com>]
2022
Dr. Stephen Hensoned7f60f1999-08-06 21:47:09 +00002023 *) Fix -startdate and -enddate (which was missing) arguments to 'ca'
2024 program.
2025 [Steve Henson]
2026
Bodo Möller48c843c1999-08-05 11:50:18 +00002027 *) New function DSA_dup_DH, which duplicates DSA parameters/keys as
2028 DH parameters/keys (q is lost during that conversion, but the resulting
2029 DH parameters contain its length).
2030
2031 For 1024-bit p, DSA_generate_parameters followed by DSA_dup_DH is
2032 much faster than DH_generate_parameters (which creates parameters
2033 where p = 2*q + 1), and also the smaller q makes DH computations
2034 much more efficient (160-bit exponentiation instead of 1024-bit
2035 exponentiation); so this provides a convenient way to support DHE
2036 ciphersuites in SSL/TLS servers (see ssl/ssltest.c). It is of
2037 utter importance to use
2038 SSL_CTX_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
2039 or
2040 SSL_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
2041 when such DH parameters are used, because otherwise small subgroup
2042 attacks may become possible!
2043 [Bodo Moeller]
2044
2045 *) Avoid memory leak in i2d_DHparams.
2046 [Bodo Moeller]
2047
Dr. Stephen Henson922180d1999-07-30 01:12:46 +00002048 *) Allow the -k option to be used more than once in the enc program:
2049 this allows the same encrypted message to be read by multiple recipients.
2050 [Steve Henson]
2051
Dr. Stephen Henson3e3d2ea1999-07-27 22:22:58 +00002052 *) New function OBJ_obj2txt(buf, buf_len, a, no_name), this converts
2053 an ASN1_OBJECT to a text string. If the "no_name" parameter is set then
2054 it will always use the numerical form of the OID, even if it has a short
2055 or long name.
2056 [Steve Henson]
2057
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00002058 *) Added an extra RSA flag: RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY. Previously the rsa_mod_exp
2059 method only got called if p,q,dmp1,dmq1,iqmp components were present,
2060 otherwise bn_mod_exp was called. In the case of hardware keys for example
2061 no private key components need be present and it might store extra data
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00002062 in the RSA structure, which cannot be accessed from bn_mod_exp.
2063 By setting RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY rsa_mod_exp will always be called for
2064 private key operations.
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00002065 [Steve Henson]
2066
Andy Polyakova0618e31999-07-25 15:13:49 +00002067 *) Added support for SPARC Linux.
2068 [Andy Polyakov]
2069
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002070 *) pem_password_cb function type incompatibly changed from
2071 typedef int pem_password_cb(char *buf, int size, int rwflag);
2072 to
2073 ....(char *buf, int size, int rwflag, void *userdata);
2074 so that applications can pass data to their callbacks:
2075 The PEM[_ASN1]_{read,write}... functions and macros now take an
2076 additional void * argument, which is just handed through whenever
2077 the password callback is called.
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00002078 [Damien Miller <dmiller@ilogic.com.au>; tiny changes by Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002079
2080 New function SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata.
2081
2082 Compatibility note: As many C implementations push function arguments
2083 onto the stack in reverse order, the new library version is likely to
2084 interoperate with programs that have been compiled with the old
2085 pem_password_cb definition (PEM_whatever takes some data that
2086 happens to be on the stack as its last argument, and the callback
2087 just ignores this garbage); but there is no guarantee whatsoever that
2088 this will work.
Bodo Möller0cceb1c1999-05-30 23:54:52 +00002089
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +00002090 *) The -DPLATFORM="\"$(PLATFORM)\"" definition and the similar -DCFLAGS=...
2091 (both in crypto/Makefile.ssl for use by crypto/cversion.c) caused
2092 problems not only on Windows, but also on some Unix platforms.
Bodo Möller2e0fc871999-07-27 09:10:36 +00002093 To avoid problematic command lines, these definitions are now in an
Bodo Möller57119941999-07-29 12:57:23 +00002094 auto-generated file crypto/buildinf.h (created by crypto/Makefile.ssl
2095 for standard "make" builds, by util/mk1mf.pl for "mk1mf" builds).
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +00002096 [Bodo Moeller]
2097
Andy Polyakov73634551999-07-20 15:50:20 +00002098 *) MIPS III/IV assembler module is reimplemented.
2099 [Andy Polyakov]
2100
Ulf Möller64344501999-07-16 00:50:45 +00002101 *) More DES library cleanups: remove references to srand/rand and
2102 delete an unused file.
2103 [Ulf Möller]
2104
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +00002105 *) Add support for the the free Netwide assembler (NASM) under Win32,
2106 since not many people have MASM (ml) and it can be hard to obtain.
2107 This is currently experimental but it seems to work OK and pass all
2108 the tests. Check out INSTALL.W32 for info.
2109 [Steve Henson]
2110
Bodo Möller50596581999-07-12 17:15:42 +00002111 *) Fix memory leaks in s3_clnt.c: All non-anonymous SSL3/TLS1 connections
2112 without temporary keys kept an extra copy of the server key,
2113 and connections with temporary keys did not free everything in case
2114 of an error.
2115 [Bodo Moeller]
2116
Bodo Möller03cd4941999-07-11 22:00:55 +00002117 *) New function RSA_check_key and new openssl rsa option -check
2118 for verifying the consistency of RSA keys.
2119 [Ulf Moeller, Bodo Moeller]
2120
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +00002121 *) Various changes to make Win32 compile work:
2122 1. Casts to avoid "loss of data" warnings in p5_crpt2.c
2123 2. Change unsigned int to int in b_dump.c to avoid "signed/unsigned
2124 comparison" warnings.
2125 3. Add sk_<TYPE>_sort to DEF file generator and do make update.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +00002126 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +00002127
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5139391999-07-11 12:40:46 +00002128 *) Add a debugging option to PKCS#5 v2 key generation function: when
2129 you #define DEBUG_PKCS5V2 passwords, salts, iteration counts and
2130 derived keys are printed to stderr.
2131 [Steve Henson]
2132
Dr. Stephen Henson0ab8beb1999-07-11 12:30:55 +00002133 *) Copy the flags in ASN1_STRING_dup().
2134 [Roman E. Pavlov <pre@mo.msk.ru>]
2135
Dr. Stephen Hensonf7daafa1999-07-11 01:48:21 +00002136 *) The x509 application mishandled signing requests containing DSA
2137 keys when the signing key was also DSA and the parameters didn't match.
2138
2139 It was supposed to omit the parameters when they matched the signing key:
2140 the verifying software was then supposed to automatically use the CA's
2141 parameters if they were absent from the end user certificate.
2142
2143 Omitting parameters is no longer recommended. The test was also
2144 the wrong way round! This was probably due to unusual behaviour in
2145 EVP_cmp_parameters() which returns 1 if the parameters match.
2146 This meant that parameters were omitted when they *didn't* match and
2147 the certificate was useless. Certificates signed with 'ca' didn't have
2148 this bug.
2149 [Steve Henson, reported by Doug Erickson <Doug.Erickson@Part.NET>]
2150
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00002151 *) Memory leak checking (-DCRYPTO_MDEBUG) had some problems.
2152 The interface is as follows:
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00002153 Applications can use
2154 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ON) aka MemCheck_start(),
2155 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_OFF) aka MemCheck_stop();
2156 "off" is now the default.
2157 The library internally uses
2158 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_DISABLE) aka MemCheck_off(),
2159 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ENABLE) aka MemCheck_on()
2160 to disable memory-checking temporarily.
2161
2162 Some inconsistent states that previously were possible (and were
2163 even the default) are now avoided.
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00002164
2165 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_TIME is new and additionally stores the current time
2166 with each memory chunk allocated; this is occasionally more helpful
2167 than just having a counter.
Bodo Möllere3911161999-07-19 10:36:10 +00002168
2169 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_THREAD is also new and adds the thread ID.
2170
2171 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_ALL enables all of the above, plus any future
2172 extensions.
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00002173 [Bodo Moeller]
2174
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00002175 *) Introduce "mode" for SSL structures (with defaults in SSL_CTX),
2176 which largely parallels "options", but is for changing API behaviour,
2177 whereas "options" are about protocol behaviour.
Bodo Möller9c962481999-07-19 12:59:12 +00002178 Initial "mode" flags are:
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00002179
2180 SSL_MODE_ENABLE_PARTIAL_WRITE Allow SSL_write to report success when
2181 a single record has been written.
2182 SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER Don't insist that SSL_write
2183 retries use the same buffer location.
2184 (But all of the contents must be
2185 copied!)
2186 [Bodo Moeller]
2187
2188 *) Bugfix: SSL_set_mode ignored its parameter, only SSL_CTX_set_mode
2189 worked.
2190
Ulf Möller5271ebd1999-06-30 00:42:56 +00002191 *) Fix problems with no-hmac etc.
2192 [Ulf Möller, pointed out by Brian Wellington <bwelling@tislabs.com>]
2193
Dr. Stephen Hensonce8b2571999-06-29 22:22:42 +00002194 *) New functions RSA_get_default_method(), RSA_set_method() and
2195 RSA_get_method(). These allows replacement of RSA_METHODs without having
2196 to mess around with the internals of an RSA structure.
2197 [Steve Henson]
2198
Bodo Möller9c729e01999-06-25 14:04:10 +00002199 *) Fix memory leaks in DSA_do_sign and DSA_is_prime.
2200 Also really enable memory leak checks in openssl.c and in some
2201 test programs.
2202 [Chad C. Mulligan, Bodo Moeller]
2203
Dr. Stephen Henson034292a1999-06-24 01:50:27 +00002204 *) Fix a bug in d2i_ASN1_INTEGER() and i2d_ASN1_INTEGER() which can mess
2205 up the length of negative integers. This has now been simplified to just
2206 store the length when it is first determined and use it later, rather
2207 than trying to keep track of where data is copied and updating it to
2208 point to the end.
2209 [Steve Henson, reported by Brien Wheeler
2210 <bwheeler@authentica-security.com>]
2211
Dr. Stephen Henson170afce1999-06-22 13:33:22 +00002212 *) Add a new function PKCS7_signatureVerify. This allows the verification
2213 of a PKCS#7 signature but with the signing certificate passed to the
2214 function itself. This contrasts with PKCS7_dataVerify which assumes the
2215 certificate is present in the PKCS#7 structure. This isn't always the
2216 case: certificates can be omitted from a PKCS#7 structure and be
2217 distributed by "out of band" means (such as a certificate database).
2218 [Steve Henson]
2219
Dr. Stephen Hensondbd665c1999-06-22 01:38:31 +00002220 *) Complete the PEM_* macros with DECLARE_PEM versions to replace the
2221 function prototypes in pem.h, also change util/mkdef.pl to add the
2222 necessary function names.
2223 [Steve Henson]
2224
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00002225 *) mk1mf.pl (used by Windows builds) did not properly read the
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00002226 options set by Configure in the top level Makefile, and Configure
Bodo Möller975d3dc1999-07-09 13:02:14 +00002227 was not even able to write more than one option correctly.
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00002228 Fixed, now "no-idea no-rc5 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG" etc. works as intended.
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00002229 [Bodo Moeller]
2230
Dr. Stephen Henson8623f691999-06-20 17:36:11 +00002231 *) New functions CONF_load_bio() and CONF_load_fp() to allow a config
2232 file to be loaded from a BIO or FILE pointer. The BIO version will
2233 for example allow memory BIOs to contain config info.
2234 [Steve Henson]
2235
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00002236 *) New function "CRYPTO_num_locks" that returns CRYPTO_NUM_LOCKS.
2237 Whoever hopes to achieve shared-library compatibility across versions
2238 must use this, not the compile-time macro.
Bodo Möller11af1a21999-06-18 18:22:38 +00002239 (Exercise 0.9.4: Which is the minimum library version required by
2240 such programs?)
2241 Note: All this applies only to multi-threaded programs, others don't
2242 need locks.
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00002243 [Bodo Moeller]
2244
Bodo Möller95d29591999-06-12 01:03:40 +00002245 *) Add missing case to s3_clnt.c state machine -- one of the new SSL tests
2246 through a BIO pair triggered the default case, i.e.
2247 SSLerr(...,SSL_R_UNKNOWN_STATE).
2248 [Bodo Moeller]
2249
2250 *) New "BIO pair" concept (crypto/bio/bss_bio.c) so that applications
2251 can use the SSL library even if none of the specific BIOs is
2252 appropriate.
2253 [Bodo Moeller]
2254
Dr. Stephen Henson9bce3071999-06-11 22:30:45 +00002255 *) Fix a bug in i2d_DSAPublicKey() which meant it returned the wrong value
2256 for the encoded length.
2257 [Jeon KyoungHo <khjeon@sds.samsung.co.kr>]
2258
Dr. Stephen Henson565d1061999-06-11 01:58:42 +00002259 *) Add initial documentation of the X509V3 functions.
2260 [Steve Henson]
2261
Dr. Stephen Hensonb7d135b1999-06-10 17:32:52 +00002262 *) Add a new pair of functions PEM_write_PKCS8PrivateKey() and
2263 PEM_write_bio_PKCS8PrivateKey() that are equivalent to
2264 PEM_write_PrivateKey() and PEM_write_bio_PrivateKey() but use the more
2265 secure PKCS#8 private key format with a high iteration count.
2266 [Steve Henson]
2267
Ralf S. Engelschall9d9b5591999-06-10 08:13:52 +00002268 *) Fix determination of Perl interpreter: A perl or perl5
2269 _directory_ in $PATH was also accepted as the interpreter.
2270 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2271
Dr. Stephen Henson5f6d0ea1999-06-09 23:33:48 +00002272 *) Fix demos/sign/sign.c: well there wasn't anything strictly speaking
2273 wrong with it but it was very old and did things like calling
2274 PEM_ASN1_read() directly and used MD5 for the hash not to mention some
2275 unusual formatting.
2276 [Steve Henson]
2277
Dr. Stephen Hensonf62676b1999-06-09 18:05:30 +00002278 *) Fix demos/selfsign.c: it used obsolete and deleted functions, changed
2279 to use the new extension code.
2280 [Steve Henson]
2281
2282 *) Implement the PEM_read/PEM_write functions in crypto/pem/pem_all.c
2283 with macros. This should make it easier to change their form, add extra
2284 arguments etc. Fix a few PEM prototypes which didn't have cipher as a
2285 constant.
2286 [Steve Henson]
2287
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00002288 *) Add to configuration table a new entry that can specify an alternative
2289 name for unistd.h (for pre-POSIX systems); we need this for NeXTstep,
2290 according to Mark Crispin <MRC@Panda.COM>.
2291 [Bodo Moeller]
2292
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +00002293#if 0
Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00002294 *) DES CBC did not update the IV. Weird.
2295 [Ben Laurie]
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +00002296#else
Bodo Möllera7bd0391999-06-09 18:01:49 +00002297 des_cbc_encrypt does not update the IV, but des_ncbc_encrypt does.
2298 Changing the behaviour of the former might break existing programs --
2299 where IV updating is needed, des_ncbc_encrypt can be used.

Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00002301
Ben Laurie233bf731999-06-09 10:19:53 +00002302 *) When bntest is run from "make test" it drives bc to check its
2303 calculations, as well as internally checking them. If an internal check
2304 fails, it needs to cause bc to give a non-zero result or make test carries
2305 on without noticing the failure. Fixed.
2306 [Ben Laurie]
2307
Ulf Möller908eb7b1999-06-08 16:35:11 +00002308 *) DES library cleanups.
2309 [Ulf Möller]
2310
Dr. Stephen Henson8eb57af1999-06-08 00:09:51 +00002311 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 PBE algorithms. This will permit PKCS#8 to be
2312 used with any cipher unlike PKCS#5 v1.5 which can at most handle 64 bit
2313 ciphers. NOTE: although the key derivation function has been verified
2314 against some published test vectors it has not been extensively tested
2315 yet. Added a -v2 "cipher" option to pkcs8 application to allow the use
2316 of v2.0.
2317 [Steve Henson]
2318
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00002319 *) Instead of "mkdir -p", which is not fully portable, use new
2320 Perl script "util/mkdir-p.pl".
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00002321 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00002322
Dr. Stephen Henson69cbf461999-06-06 13:07:13 +00002323 *) Rewrite the way password based encryption (PBE) is handled. It used to
2324 assume that the ASN1 AlgorithmIdentifier parameter was a PBEParameter
2325 structure. This was true for the PKCS#5 v1.5 and PKCS#12 PBE algorithms
2326 but doesn't apply to PKCS#5 v2.0 where it can be something else. Now
2327 the 'parameter' field of the AlgorithmIdentifier is passed to the
2328 underlying key generation function so it must do its own ASN1 parsing.
2329 This has also changed the EVP_PBE_CipherInit() function which now has a
2330 'parameter' argument instead of literal salt and iteration count values
2331 and the function EVP_PBE_ALGOR_CipherInit() has been deleted.
2332 [Steve Henson]
2333
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00002334 *) Support for PKCS#5 v1.5 compatible password based encryption algorithms
Dr. Stephen Hensone7871ff1999-06-05 12:39:10 +00002335 and PKCS#8 functionality. New 'pkcs8' application linked to openssl.
2336 Needed to change the PEM_STRING_EVP_PKEY value which was just "PRIVATE
2337 KEY" because this clashed with PKCS#8 unencrypted string. Since this
2338 value was just used as a "magic string" and not used directly its
2339 value doesn't matter.
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00002340 [Steve Henson]
2341
Ben Laurie84c15db1999-06-04 22:23:10 +00002342 *) Introduce some semblance of const correctness to BN. Shame C doesn't
2343 support mutable.
2344 [Ben Laurie]
2345
Bodo Möller272c9331999-06-07 00:26:20 +00002346 *) "linux-sparc64" configuration (ultrapenguin).

Ulf Möllera53955d1999-06-04 21:35:58 +00002351 *) config now generates no-xxx options for missing ciphers.
2352 [Ulf Möller]
2353
2354 *) Support the EBCDIC character set (work in progress).
2355 File ebcdic.c not yet included because it has a different license.
2356 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
2357
2358 *) Support BS2000/OSD-POSIX.
2359 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
2360
Ben Laurieb4f76581999-06-03 18:04:04 +00002361 *) Make callbacks for key generation use void * instead of char *.
2362 [Ben Laurie]
2363
Ben Laurie213a75d1999-06-03 16:07:37 +00002364 *) Make S/MIME samples compile (not yet tested).
2365 [Ben Laurie]
2366
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002367 *) Additional typesafe stacks.
2368 [Ben Laurie]
2369
Bodo Möller885982d1999-06-04 21:46:35 +00002370 *) New configuration variants "bsdi-elf-gcc" (BSD/OS 4.x).

Bodo Möller054009a1999-05-27 23:59:58 +00002379 [Sean O Riordain, Wade Scholine]
Bodo Möller71f08091999-05-27 23:52:31 +00002380
Bodo Möllere95f6261999-05-27 20:55:18 +00002381 *) Add missing BIO_free at exit of pkcs12 application.
2382 [Wu Zhigang]
2383
2384 *) Fix memory leak in conf.c.
2385 [Steve Henson]
2386
Bodo Möller472bde41999-05-27 20:49:27 +00002387 *) Updates for Win32 to assembler version of MD5.
2388 [Steve Henson]
2389
2390 *) Set #! path to perl in apps/der_chop to where we found it
2391 instead of using a fixed path.
2392 [Bodo Moeller]
2393
2394 *) SHA library changes for irix64-mips4-cc.
2395 [Andy Polyakov]
2396
2397 *) Improvements for VMS support.
2398 [Richard Levitte]
2399
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002400
Bodo Möller557068c1999-05-24 22:38:23 +00002401 Changes between 0.9.2b and 0.9.3 [24 May 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00002402
Ulf Möllere14d4441999-05-20 01:43:07 +00002403 *) Bignum library bug fix. IRIX 6 passes "make test" now!
2404 This also avoids the problems with SC4.2 and unpatched SC5.
2405 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2406
Dr. Stephen Hensone84240d1999-05-19 12:45:16 +00002407 *) New functions sk_num, sk_value and sk_set to replace the previous macros.
2408 These are required because of the typesafe stack would otherwise break
2409 existing code. If old code used a structure member which used to be STACK
2410 and is now STACK_OF (for example cert in a PKCS7_SIGNED structure) with
2411 sk_num or sk_value it would produce an error because the num, data members
2412 are not present in STACK_OF. Now it just produces a warning. sk_set
2413 replaces the old method of assigning a value to sk_value
2414 (e.g. sk_value(x, i) = y) which the library used in a few cases. Any code
2415 that does this will no longer work (and should use sk_set instead) but
2416 this could be regarded as a "questionable" behaviour anyway.
2417 [Steve Henson]
2418
Dr. Stephen Henson1b266da1999-05-16 17:32:32 +00002419 *) Fix most of the other PKCS#7 bugs. The "experimental" code can now
2420 correctly handle encrypted S/MIME data.
2421 [Steve Henson]
2422
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00002423 *) Change type of various DES function arguments from des_cblock
Bodo Möllerf43c8141999-05-16 14:20:17 +00002424 (which means, in function argument declarations, pointer to char)
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00002425 to des_cblock * (meaning pointer to array with 8 char elements),
2426 which allows the compiler to do more typechecking; it was like
2427 that back in SSLeay, but with lots of ugly casts.
2428
2429 Introduce new type const_des_cblock.
2430 [Bodo Moeller]
2431
Dr. Stephen Henson84fa7041999-05-16 00:25:36 +00002432 *) Reorganise the PKCS#7 library and get rid of some of the more obvious
2433 problems: find RecipientInfo structure that matches recipient certificate
2434 and initialise the ASN1 structures properly based on passed cipher.
2435 [Steve Henson]
2436
Ben Laurie62bad771999-05-15 15:59:28 +00002437 *) Belatedly make the BN tests actually check the results.
2438 [Ben Laurie]
2439
Dr. Stephen Henson1ad2ecb1999-05-14 18:21:21 +00002440 *) Fix the encoding and decoding of negative ASN1 INTEGERS and conversion
2441 to and from BNs: it was completely broken. New compilation option
2442 NEG_PUBKEY_BUG to allow for some broken certificates that encode public
2443 key elements as negative integers.
2444 [Steve Henson]
2445
Ulf Möllerbd3576d1999-05-13 13:16:42 +00002446 *) Reorganize and speed up MD5.
2447 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2448
Ulf Möller7d7d2cb1999-05-13 11:37:32 +00002449 *) VMS support.
2450 [Richard Levitte <richard@levitte.org>]
2451
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5eac851999-05-12 01:56:27 +00002452 *) New option -out to asn1parse to allow the parsed structure to be
2453 output to a file. This is most useful when combined with the -strparse
2454 option to examine the output of things like OCTET STRINGS.
2455 [Steve Henson]
2456
Bodo Möllerb31b04d1999-05-11 07:43:16 +00002457 *) Make SSL library a little more fool-proof by not requiring any longer
2458 that SSL_set_{accept,connect}_state be called before
2459 SSL_{accept,connect} may be used (SSL_set_..._state is omitted
2460 in many applications because usually everything *appeared* to work as
2461 intended anyway -- now it really works as intended).
2462 [Bodo Moeller]
2463
Ulf Möllerd5a2ea41999-05-10 23:59:28 +00002464 *) Move openssl.cnf out of lib/.
2465 [Ulf Möller]
2466
Ralf S. Engelschall397f7031999-05-10 08:33:56 +00002467 *) Fix various things to let OpenSSL even pass ``egcc -pipe -O2 -Wall
2468 -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wmissing-prototypes
2469 -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Winline'' with EGCS 1.1.2+
2470 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2471
Dr. Stephen Henson884e8ec1999-05-10 00:47:42 +00002472 *) Various fixes to the EVP and PKCS#7 code. It may now be able to
2473 handle PKCS#7 enveloped data properly.
2474 [Sebastian Akerman <sak@parallelconsulting.com>, modified by Steve]
2475
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002476 *) Create a duplicate of the SSL_CTX's CERT in SSL_new instead of
2477 copying pointers. The cert_st handling is changed by this in
2478 various ways (and thus what used to be known as ctx->default_cert
2479 is now called ctx->cert, since we don't resort to s->ctx->[default_]cert
2480 any longer when s->cert does not give us what we need).
2481 ssl_cert_instantiate becomes obsolete by this change.
2482 As soon as we've got the new code right (possibly it already is?),
2483 we have solved a couple of bugs of the earlier code where s->cert
2484 was used as if it could not have been shared with other SSL structures.
2485
2486 Note that using the SSL API in certain dirty ways now will result
2487 in different behaviour than observed with earlier library versions:
2488 Changing settings for an SSL_CTX *ctx after having done s = SSL_new(ctx)
2489 does not influence s as it used to.
2490
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002491 In order to clean up things more thoroughly, inside SSL_SESSION
Bodo Möllerb56bce41999-05-13 15:09:38 +00002492 we don't use CERT any longer, but a new structure SESS_CERT
2493 that holds per-session data (if available); currently, this is
2494 the peer's certificate chain and, for clients, the server's certificate
2495 and temporary key. CERT holds only those values that can have
2496 meaningful defaults in an SSL_CTX.
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002497 [Bodo Moeller]
2498
Dr. Stephen Hensonc8b41851999-05-09 16:39:11 +00002499 *) New function X509V3_EXT_i2d() to create an X509_EXTENSION structure
2500 from the internal representation. Various PKCS#7 fixes: remove some
2501 evil casts and set the enc_dig_alg field properly based on the signing
2502 key type.
2503 [Steve Henson]
2504
Dr. Stephen Hensone40b7ab1999-05-08 12:59:50 +00002505 *) Allow PKCS#12 password to be set from the command line or the
2506 environment. Let 'ca' get its config file name from the environment
2507 variables "OPENSSL_CONF" or "SSLEAY_CONF" (for consistency with 'req'
2508 and 'x509').
2509 [Steve Henson]
2510
2511 *) Allow certificate policies extension to use an IA5STRING for the
2512 organization field. This is contrary to the PKIX definition but
2513 VeriSign uses it and IE5 only recognises this form. Document 'x509'
2514 extension option.
2515 [Steve Henson]
2516
Ben Laurie5b640021999-05-07 15:42:23 +00002517 *) Add PEDANTIC compiler flag to allow compilation with gcc -pedantic,
2518 without disallowing inline assembler and the like for non-pedantic builds.
2519 [Ben Laurie]
2520
Ulf Möller31a674d1999-05-06 00:46:34 +00002521 *) Support Borland C++ builder.
2522 [Janez Jere <jj@void.si>, modified by Ulf Möller]
2523
2524 *) Support Mingw32.
2525 [Ulf Möller]
2526
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002527 *) SHA-1 cleanups and performance enhancements.
2528 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2529
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002530 *) Sparc v8plus assembler for the bignum library.
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002531 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002532
Ulf Möllerafd1f9e1999-05-04 11:52:26 +00002533 *) Accept any -xxx and +xxx compiler options in Configure.
2534 [Ulf Möller]
2535
2536 *) Update HPUX configuration.
2537 [Anonymous]
2538
Ralf S. Engelschalldee75ec1999-05-04 10:15:02 +00002539 *) Add missing sk_<type>_unshift() function to safestack.h
2540 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2541
Bodo Möllerb3ca6451999-05-01 17:43:52 +00002542 *) New function SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file that sets the
2543 "extra_cert"s in addition to the certificate. (This makes sense
2544 only for "PEM" format files, as chains as a whole are not
2545 DER-encoded.)
2546 [Bodo Moeller]
2547
Bodo Möller7f897141999-05-01 03:20:40 +00002548 *) Support verify_depth from the SSL API.
2549 x509_vfy.c had what can be considered an off-by-one-error:
2550 Its depth (which was not part of the external interface)
2551 was actually counting the number of certificates in a chain;
2552 now it really counts the depth.
2553 [Bodo Moeller]
2554
Bodo Möllerdc1f6071999-05-01 20:16:35 +00002555 *) Bugfix in crypto/x509/x509_cmp.c: The SSLerr macro was used
2556 instead of X509err, which often resulted in confusing error
2557 messages since the error codes are not globally unique
2558 (e.g. an alleged error in ssl3_accept when a certificate
2559 didn't match the private key).
2560
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002561 *) New function SSL_CTX_set_session_id_context that allows to set a default
Bodo Möllerdd1462f1999-05-01 00:07:42 +00002562 value (so that you don't need SSL_set_session_id_context for each
2563 connection using the SSL_CTX).
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002564 [Bodo Moeller]
2565
Ulf Möllerc6652741999-04-29 21:56:13 +00002566 *) OAEP decoding bug fix.
2567 [Ulf Möller]
2568
Bodo Möllere5f30451999-04-29 21:52:08 +00002569 *) Support INSTALL_PREFIX for package builders, as proposed by
2570 David Harris.
2571 [Bodo Moeller]
2572
Bodo Möller87bc2c01999-04-29 16:10:41 +00002573 *) New Configure options "threads" and "no-threads". For systems
2574 where the proper compiler options are known (currently Solaris
2575 and Linux), "threads" is the default.
2576 [Bodo Moeller]
2577
Bodo Möller6e6acfd1999-04-28 22:33:54 +00002578 *) New script util/mklink.pl as a faster substitute for util/mklink.sh.
2579 [Bodo Moeller]
2580
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002581 *) Install various scripts to $(OPENSSLDIR)/misc, not to
2582 $(INSTALLTOP)/bin -- they shouldn't clutter directories
2583 such as /usr/local/bin.
2584 [Bodo Moeller]
2585
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002586 *) "make linux-shared" to build shared libraries.
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002587 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002588
Ulf Möllerf5d7a031999-04-27 01:14:46 +00002589 *) New Configure option no-<cipher> (rsa, idea, rc5, ...).
2590 [Ulf Möller]
2591
Dr. Stephen Hensonb64f8251999-04-27 00:36:20 +00002592 *) Add the PKCS#12 API documentation to openssl.txt. Preliminary support for
2593 extension adding in x509 utility.
2594 [Steve Henson]
2595
Ulf Möllera9be3af1999-04-26 16:43:10 +00002596 *) Remove NOPROTO sections and error code comments.
2597 [Ulf Möller]
2598
Dr. Stephen Henson47339f61999-04-26 00:23:10 +00002599 *) Partial rewrite of the DEF file generator to now parse the ANSI
2600 prototypes.
2601 [Steve Henson]
2602
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002603 *) New Configure options --prefix=DIR and --openssldir=DIR.
Ulf Möller9c4711c1999-04-24 23:39:52 +00002604 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002605
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002606 *) Complete rewrite of the error code script(s). It is all now handled
2607 by one script at the top level which handles error code gathering,
2608 header rewriting and C source file generation. It should be much better
2609 than the old method: it now uses a modified version of Ulf's parser to
2610 read the ANSI prototypes in all header files (thus the old K&R definitions
2611 aren't needed for error creation any more) and do a better job of
2612 translating function codes into names. The old 'ASN1 error code imbedded
2613 in a comment' is no longer necessary and it doesn't use .err files which
Dr. Stephen Henson6e781e81999-04-24 13:28:57 +00002614 have now been deleted. Also the error code call doesn't have to appear all
2615 on one line (which resulted in some large lines...).
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002616 [Steve Henson]
2617
Bodo Möller018b4ee1999-04-23 22:38:22 +00002618 *) Change #include filenames from <foo.h> to <openssl/foo.h>.
Bodo Möller92df9601999-04-23 22:20:21 +00002619 [Bodo Moeller]
2620
Bodo Möller85f48f71999-04-22 14:28:38 +00002621 *) Change behaviour of ssl2_read when facing length-0 packets: Don't return
2622 0 (which usually indicates a closed connection), but continue reading.
2623 [Bodo Moeller]
2624
Bodo Möller90b8bbb1999-04-22 13:38:03 +00002625 *) Fix some race conditions.
2626 [Bodo Moeller]
2627
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002628 *) Add support for CRL distribution points extension. Add Certificate
2629 Policies and CRL distribution points documentation.
2630 [Steve Henson]
2631
Ulf Möller8e10f2b1999-04-21 17:31:05 +00002632 *) Move the autogenerated header file parts to crypto/opensslconf.h.
2633 [Ulf Möller]
2634
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002635 *) Fix new 56-bit DES export ciphersuites: they were using 7 bytes instead of
2636 8 of keying material. Merlin has also confirmed interop with this fix
2637 between OpenSSL and Baltimore C/SSL 2.0 and J/SSL 2.0.
2638 [Merlin Hughes <merlin@baltimore.ie>]
2639
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002640 *) Fix lots of warnings.
2641 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2642
2643 *) In add_cert_dir() in crypto/x509/by_dir.c, break out of the loop if
2644 the directory spec didn't end with a LIST_SEPARATOR_CHAR.
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002645 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002646
Ulf Möller8fb04b91999-04-20 16:23:03 +00002647 *) Fix problems with sizeof(long) == 8.
2648 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2649
Ulf Möller6b691a51999-04-19 21:31:43 +00002650 *) Change functions to ANSI C.
2651 [Ulf Möller]
2652
Ulf Möllerdf82f5c1999-04-19 14:45:02 +00002653 *) Fix typos in error codes.
2654 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>, Ulf Möller]
2655
Ulf Möller22a4f961999-04-19 13:54:11 +00002656 *) Remove defunct assembler files from Configure.
2657 [Ulf Möller]
2658
Ulf Möller5e85b6a1999-04-19 13:41:45 +00002659 *) SPARC v8 assembler BIGNUM implementation.
2660 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2661
Dr. Stephen Henson3edd7ed1999-04-19 17:55:11 +00002662 *) Support for Certificate Policies extension: both print and set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002663 Various additions to support the r2i method this uses.
Dr. Stephen Henson41b731f1999-04-18 23:21:03 +00002664 [Steve Henson]
2665
Ben Lauriee7788021999-04-17 21:25:43 +00002666 *) A lot of constification, and fix a bug in X509_NAME_oneline() that could
2667 return a const string when you are expecting an allocated buffer.
2668 [Ben Laurie]
2669
Dr. Stephen Hensonc83e5231999-04-17 23:55:39 +00002670 *) Add support for ASN1 types UTF8String and VISIBLESTRING, also the CHOICE
2671 types DirectoryString and DisplayText.
Dr. Stephen Hensond77b3051999-04-17 15:53:32 +00002672 [Steve Henson]
2673
Dr. Stephen Henson1d48dd01999-04-16 23:57:04 +00002674 *) Add code to allow r2i extensions to access the configuration database,
2675 add an LHASH database driver and add several ctx helper functions.
2676 [Steve Henson]
2677
Dr. Stephen Henson953937b1999-04-15 23:07:00 +00002678 *) Fix an evil bug in bn_expand2() which caused various BN functions to
2679 fail when they extended the size of a BIGNUM.
2680 [Steve Henson]
2681
Dr. Stephen Henson28a98801999-04-14 23:44:41 +00002682 *) Various utility functions to handle SXNet extension. Modify mkdef.pl to
2683 support typesafe stack.
2684 [Steve Henson]
2685
Ben Laurie8f7de4f1999-04-14 11:13:47 +00002686 *) Fix typo in SSL_[gs]et_options().
2687 [Nils Frostberg <nils@medcom.se>]
2688
Dr. Stephen Henson0490a861999-04-13 23:56:39 +00002689 *) Delete various functions and files that belonged to the (now obsolete)
2690 old X509V3 handling code.
2691 [Steve Henson]
2692
Ulf Möller5fbe91d1999-04-13 00:58:49 +00002693 *) New Configure option "rsaref".
2694 [Ulf Möller]
2695
Bodo Möller5fd4e2b1999-04-12 19:58:17 +00002696 *) Don't auto-generate pem.h.
2697 [Bodo Moeller]
2698
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00002699 *) Introduce type-safe ASN.1 SETs.
2700 [Ben Laurie]
2701
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002702 *) Convert various additional casted stacks to type-safe STACK_OF() variants.
Ben Laurie135a1dc1999-05-07 09:18:25 +00002703 [Ben Laurie, Ralf S. Engelschall, Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002704
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00002705 *) Introduce type-safe STACKs. This will almost certainly break lots of code
2706 that links with OpenSSL (well at least cause lots of warnings), but fear
2707 not: the conversion is trivial, and it eliminates loads of evil casts. A
2708 few STACKed things have been converted already. Feel free to convert more.
2709 In the fullness of time, I'll do away with the STACK type altogether.
2710 [Ben Laurie]
2711
Ralf S. Engelschallf9a25931999-04-12 11:45:14 +00002712 *) Add `openssl ca -revoke <certfile>' facility which revokes a certificate
2713 specified in <certfile> by updating the entry in the index.txt file.
2714 This way one no longer has to edit the index.txt file manually for
2715 revoking a certificate. The -revoke option does the gory details now.
2716 [Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@openca.org>, Ralf S. Engelschall]
2717
Ralf S. Engelschall2f0cd191999-04-12 10:36:16 +00002718 *) Fix `openssl crl -noout -text' combination where `-noout' killed the
2719 `-text' option at all and this way the `-noout -text' combination was
2720 inconsistent in `openssl crl' with the friends in `openssl x509|rsa|dsa'.
2721 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2722
Ralf S. Engelschall268c2101999-04-12 09:59:05 +00002723 *) Make sure a corresponding plain text error message exists for the
2724 X509_V_ERR_CERT_REVOKED/23 error number which can occur when a
2725 verify callback function determined that a certificate was revoked.
2726 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2727
Bodo Möllerfc8ee061999-04-11 02:49:35 +00002728 *) Bugfix: In test/testenc, don't test "openssl <cipher>" for
2729 ciphers that were excluded, e.g. by -DNO_IDEA. Also, test
2730 all available cipers including rc5, which was forgotten until now.
2731 In order to let the testing shell script know which algorithms
2732 are available, a new (up to now undocumented) command
2733 "openssl list-cipher-commands" is used.
2734 [Bodo Moeller]
2735
Bodo Möllerc7ac31e1999-04-09 20:54:25 +00002736 *) Bugfix: s_client occasionally would sleep in select() when
2737 it should have checked SSL_pending() first.
2738 [Bodo Moeller]
2739
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002740 *) New functions DSA_do_sign and DSA_do_verify to provide access to
2741 the raw DSA values prior to ASN.1 encoding.
2742 [Ulf Möller]
2743
2744 *) Tweaks to Configure
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002745 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002746
Dr. Stephen Hensond2e26dc1999-04-08 23:55:42 +00002747 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 ASN1 PBES2 structures. No other support,
2748 yet...
2749 [Steve Henson]
2750
Ulf Möller99aab161999-04-01 12:34:33 +00002751 *) New variables $(RANLIB) and $(PERL) in the Makefiles.
2752 [Ulf Möller]
2753
Ulf Möller2613c1f1999-03-31 12:38:27 +00002754 *) New config option to avoid instructions that are illegal on the 80386.
2755 The default code is faster, but requires at least a 486.
2756 [Ulf Möller]
2757
Bodo Möller6d02d8e1999-03-31 12:06:30 +00002758 *) Got rid of old SSL2_CLIENT_VERSION (inconsistently used) and
2759 SSL2_SERVER_VERSION (not used at all) macros, which are now the
2760 same as SSL2_VERSION anyway.
2761 [Bodo Moeller]
2762
2763 *) New "-showcerts" option for s_client.
2764 [Bodo Moeller]
2765
Dr. Stephen Hensonee0508d1999-03-29 17:50:26 +00002766 *) Still more PKCS#12 integration. Add pkcs12 application to openssl
2767 application. Various cleanups and fixes.
2768 [Steve Henson]
2769
Dr. Stephen Henson8d8c7261999-03-28 23:17:34 +00002770 *) More PKCS#12 integration. Add new pkcs12 directory with Makefile.ssl and
2771 modify error routines to work internally. Add error codes and PBE init
2772 to library startup routines.
2773 [Steve Henson]
2774
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00002775 *) Further PKCS#12 integration. Added password based encryption, PKCS#8 and
2776 packing functions to asn1 and evp. Changed function names and error
2777 codes along the way.
2778 [Steve Henson]
2779
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00002780 *) PKCS12 integration: and so it begins... First of several patches to
2781 slowly integrate PKCS#12 functionality into OpenSSL. Add PKCS#12
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00002782 objects to objects.h
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00002783 [Steve Henson]
2784
Dr. Stephen Henson785cdf21999-03-27 14:06:25 +00002785 *) Add a new 'indent' option to some X509V3 extension code. Initial ASN1
2786 and display support for Thawte strong extranet extension.
2787 [Steve Henson]
2788
Ben Laurieba423ad1999-03-27 13:03:37 +00002789 *) Add LinuxPPC support.
2790 [Jeff Dubrule <igor@pobox.org>]
2791
Ben Laurie67da3df1999-03-27 12:53:21 +00002792 *) Get rid of redundant BN file bn_mulw.c, and rename bn_div64 to
2793 bn_div_words in alpha.s.
2794 [Hannes Reinecke <H.Reinecke@hw.ac.uk> and Ben Laurie]
2795
Ralf S. Engelschall0e9fc711999-03-25 07:49:33 +00002796 *) Make sure the RSA OAEP test is skipped under -DRSAref because
2797 OAEP isn't supported when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
2798 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2799
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00002800 *) Move definitions of IS_SET/IS_SEQUENCE inside crypto/asn1/asn1.h
2801 so they no longer are missing under -DNOPROTO.
2802 [Soren S. Jorvang <soren@t.dk>]
2803
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00002804
2805 Changes between 0.9.1c and 0.9.2b [22 Mar 1999]
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00002806
Ben Laurieb4cadc61999-03-22 12:22:14 +00002807 *) Make SSL_get_peer_cert_chain() work in servers. Unfortunately, it still
2808 doesn't work when the session is reused. Coming soon!
2809 [Ben Laurie]
2810
2811 *) Fix a security hole, that allows sessions to be reused in the wrong
2812 context thus bypassing client cert protection! All software that uses
2813 client certs and session caches in multiple contexts NEEDS PATCHING to
2814 allow session reuse! A fuller solution is in the works.
2815 [Ben Laurie, problem pointed out by Holger Reif, Bodo Moeller (and ???)]
2816
Ralf S. Engelschallafb23061999-03-20 13:04:12 +00002817 *) Some more source tree cleanups (removed obsolete files
2818 crypto/bf/asm/bf586.pl, test/test.txt and crypto/sha/asm/f.s; changed
2819 permission on "config" script to be executable) and a fix for the INSTALL
2820 document.
2821 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2822
Dr. Stephen Henson199d59e1999-03-14 01:16:45 +00002823 *) Remove some legacy and erroneous uses of malloc, free instead of
2824 Malloc, Free.
2825 [Lennart Bang <lob@netstream.se>, with minor changes by Steve]
2826
Ben Laurieb4899bb1999-03-12 20:41:09 +00002827 *) Make rsa_oaep_test return non-zero on error.
2828 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
2829
Ben Laurie29c0fcc1999-03-12 20:26:27 +00002830 *) Add support for native Solaris shared libraries. Configure
2831 solaris-sparc-sc4-pic, make, then run shlib/solaris-sc4.sh. It'd be nice
2832 if someone would make that last step automatic.
2833 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@AdNovum.CH>]
2834
Ben Lauriecadf1261999-03-12 19:58:43 +00002835 *) ctx_size was not built with the right compiler during "make links". Fixed.
2836 [Ben Laurie]
2837
Dr. Stephen Hensonbc420ac1999-03-12 01:43:28 +00002838 *) Change the meaning of 'ALL' in the cipher list. It now means "everything
2839 except NULL ciphers". This means the default cipher list will no longer
2840 enable NULL ciphers. They need to be specifically enabled e.g. with
2841 the string "DEFAULT:eNULL".
2842 [Steve Henson]
2843
Dr. Stephen Hensonabd4c911999-03-11 02:42:13 +00002844 *) Fix to RSA private encryption routines: if p < q then it would
2845 occasionally produce an invalid result. This will only happen with
2846 externally generated keys because OpenSSL (and SSLeay) ensure p > q.
2847 [Steve Henson]
2848
Ralf S. Engelschall7e37e721999-03-10 19:57:05 +00002849 *) Be less restrictive and allow also `perl util/perlpath.pl
2850 /path/to/bin/perl' in addition to `perl util/perlpath.pl /path/to/bin',
2851 because this way one can also use an interpreter named `perl5' (which is
2852 usually the name of Perl 5.xxx on platforms where an Perl 4.x is still
2853 installed as `perl').
2854 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2855
Ralf S. Engelschall637691e1999-03-10 19:51:43 +00002856 *) Let util/clean-depend.pl work also with older Perl 5.00x versions.
2857 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
2858
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00002859 *) Fix Makefile.org so CC,CFLAG etc are passed to 'make links' add
2860 advapi32.lib to Win32 build and change the pem test comparision
2861 to fc.exe (thanks to Ulrich Kroener <kroneru@yahoo.com> for the
Dr. Stephen Henson38138021999-03-10 18:30:48 +00002862 suggestion). Fix misplaced ASNI prototypes and declarations in evp.h
2863 and crypto/des/ede_cbcm_enc.c.
2864 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00002865
Ben Laurieb241fef1999-03-09 11:37:23 +00002866 *) DES quad checksum was broken on big-endian architectures. Fixed.
2867 [Ben Laurie]
2868
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002869 *) Comment out two functions in bio.h that aren't implemented. Fix up the
2870 Win32 test batch file so it (might) work again. The Win32 test batch file
2871 is horrible: I feel ill....
2872 [Steve Henson]
2873
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00002874 *) Move various #ifdefs around so NO_SYSLOG, NO_DIRENT etc are now selected
2875 in e_os.h. Audit of header files to check ANSI and non ANSI
2876 sections: 10 functions were absent from non ANSI section and not exported
2877 from Windows DLLs. Fixed up libeay.num for new functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002878 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00002879
Ralf S. Engelschalld10f0521999-03-08 12:35:01 +00002880 *) Make `openssl version' output lines consistent.
2881 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2882
Ralf S. Engelschallc0e538e1999-03-08 11:41:26 +00002883 *) Fix Win32 symbol export lists for BIO functions: Added
2884 BIO_get_ex_new_index, BIO_get_ex_num, BIO_get_ex_data and BIO_set_ex_data
2885 to ms/libeay{16,32}.def.
2886 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2887
Ralf S. Engelschall84107e61999-03-08 11:25:49 +00002888 *) Second round of fixing the OpenSSL perl/ stuff. It now at least compiled
2889 fine under Unix and passes some trivial tests I've now added. But the
2890 whole stuff is horribly incomplete, so a README.1ST with a disclaimer was
2891 added to make sure no one expects that this stuff really works in the
2892 OpenSSL 0.9.2 release. Additionally I've started to clean the XS sources
2893 up and fixed a few little bugs and inconsistencies in OpenSSL.{pm,xs} and
2894 openssl_bio.xs.
2895 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2896
Ben Laurie26a08461999-03-07 15:08:38 +00002897 *) Fix the generation of two part addresses in perl.
2898 [Kenji Miyake <kenji@miyake.org>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
2899
Ben Laurie7d3ce7b1999-03-07 14:17:32 +00002900 *) Add config entry for Linux on MIPS.
2901 [John Tobey <jtobey@channel1.com>]
2902
Ben Laurieefadf601999-03-07 15:21:08 +00002903 *) Make links whenever Configure is run, unless we are on Windoze.
Ben Lauriecba50681999-03-07 14:05:36 +00002904 [Ben Laurie]
2905
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00002906 *) Permit extensions to be added to CRLs using crl_section in openssl.cnf.
2907 Currently only issuerAltName and AuthorityKeyIdentifier make any sense
2908 in CRLs.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00002909 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00002910
Ralf S. Engelschall116e3151999-03-06 16:07:47 +00002911 *) Add a useful kludge to allow package maintainers to specify compiler and
2912 other platforms details on the command line without having to patch the
2913 Configure script everytime: One now can use ``perl Configure
2914 <id>:<details>'', i.e. platform ids are allowed to have details appended
2915 to them (seperated by colons). This is treated as there would be a static
2916 pre-configured entry in Configure's %table under key <id> with value
2917 <details> and ``perl Configure <id>'' is called. So, when you want to
2918 perform a quick test-compile under FreeBSD 3.1 with pgcc and without
2919 assembler stuff you can use ``perl Configure "FreeBSD-elf:pgcc:-O6:::"''
2920 now, which overrides the FreeBSD-elf entry on-the-fly.
2921 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2922
Ben Lauriebc348241999-03-06 15:21:02 +00002923 *) Disable new TLS1 ciphersuites by default: they aren't official yet.
2924 [Ben Laurie]
2925
Ralf S. Engelschall3eb0ed61999-03-06 14:35:03 +00002926 *) Allow DSO flags like -fpic, -fPIC, -KPIC etc. to be specified
2927 on the `perl Configure ...' command line. This way one can compile
2928 OpenSSL libraries with Position Independent Code (PIC) which is needed
2929 for linking it into DSOs.
2930 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2931
Ben Laurief415fa31999-03-06 14:09:36 +00002932 *) Remarkably, export ciphers were totally broken and no-one had noticed!
2933 Fixed.
2934 [Ben Laurie]
2935
Ralf S. Engelschall0b903ec1999-03-06 13:29:09 +00002936 *) Cleaned up the LICENSE document: The official contact for any license
2937 questions now is the OpenSSL core team under openssl-core@openssl.org.
2938 And add a paragraph about the dual-license situation to make sure people
2939 recognize that _BOTH_ the OpenSSL license _AND_ the SSLeay license apply
2940 to the OpenSSL toolkit.
2941 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2942
Ralf S. Engelschallbb8f3c51999-03-06 12:32:06 +00002943 *) General source tree makefile cleanups: Made `making xxx in yyy...'
2944 display consistent in the source tree and replaced `/bin/rm' by `rm'.
2945 Additonally cleaned up the `make links' target: Remove unnecessary
2946 semicolons, subsequent redundant removes, inline point.sh into mklink.sh
2947 to speed processing and no longer clutter the display with confusing
2948 stuff. Instead only the actually done links are displayed.
2949 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2950
Ben Laurie988788f1999-03-06 12:09:36 +00002951 *) Permit null encryption ciphersuites, used for authentication only. It used
2952 to be necessary to set the preprocessor define SSL_ALLOW_ENULL to do this.
2953 It is now necessary to set SSL_FORBID_ENULL to prevent the use of null
2954 encryption.
2955 [Ben Laurie]
2956
Dr. Stephen Henson924acc51999-03-05 02:05:15 +00002957 *) Add a bunch of fixes to the PKCS#7 stuff. It used to sometimes reorder
2958 signed attributes when verifying signatures (this would break them),
2959 the detached data encoding was wrong and public keys obtained using
2960 X509_get_pubkey() weren't freed.
2961 [Steve Henson]
2962
Dr. Stephen Hensond00b7aa1999-03-05 01:07:04 +00002963 *) Add text documentation for the BUFFER functions. Also added a work around
2964 to a Win95 console bug. This was triggered by the password read stuff: the
2965 last character typed gets carried over to the next fread(). If you were
2966 generating a new cert request using 'req' for example then the last
2967 character of the passphrase would be CR which would then enter the first
2968 field as blank.
Dr. Stephen Henson9985bed1999-03-04 23:29:51 +00002969 [Steve Henson]
2970
Ralf S. Engelschall789285a1999-03-04 12:55:42 +00002971 *) Added the new `Includes OpenSSL Cryptography Software' button as
2972 doc/openssl_button.{gif,html} which is similar in style to the old SSLeay
2973 button and can be used by applications based on OpenSSL to show the
2974 relationship to the OpenSSL project.
2975 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2976
Ralf S. Engelschalla06c6021999-03-04 07:54:01 +00002977 *) Remove confusing variables in function signatures in files
2978 ssl/ssl_lib.c and ssl/ssl.h.
2979 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
2980
Ralf S. Engelschall8d697db1999-03-04 07:47:27 +00002981 *) Don't install bss_file.c under PREFIX/include/
2982 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
2983
Dr. Stephen Henson06c68491999-03-03 02:01:26 +00002984 *) Get the Win32 compile working again. Modify mkdef.pl so it can handle
2985 functions that return function pointers and has support for NT specific
2986 stuff. Fix mk1mf.pl and VC-32.pl to support NT differences also. Various
2987 #ifdef WIN32 and WINNTs sprinkled about the place and some changes from
2988 unsigned to signed types: this was killing the Win32 compile.
2989 [Steve Henson]
2990
Ralf S. Engelschall72e442a1999-03-22 15:50:34 +00002991 *) Add new certificate file to stack functions,
2992 SSL_add_dir_cert_subjects_to_stack() and
2993 SSL_add_file_cert_subjects_to_stack(). These largely supplant
2994 SSL_load_client_CA_file(), and can be used to add multiple certs easily
2995 to a stack (usually this is then handed to SSL_CTX_set_client_CA_list()).
Ben Laurieeb90a481999-02-28 17:41:55 +00002996 This means that Apache-SSL and similar packages don't have to mess around
2997 to add as many CAs as they want to the preferred list.
2998 [Ben Laurie]
2999
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00003000 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
3001 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
3002 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
3003 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
3004 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +00003005
3006 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
3007 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00003008
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +00003009 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
3010 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
3011 [Steve Henson]
3012
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +00003013 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
3014 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
3015 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
3016 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
3017 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
3018 (e.g. s_server).
3019 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
3020 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
3021 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
3022 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
3023 no way to reconfigure them.
3024 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
3025 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
3026 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
3027 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
3028 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
3029 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3030
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +00003031 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
3032 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
3033 recognized by the users.
3034 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3035
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +00003036 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
3037 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
3038 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
3039 already masked variable.
3040 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3041
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +00003042 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
3043 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3044
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +00003045 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
3046 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
3047 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
3048 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3049
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +00003050 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
3051 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
3052 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3053
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +00003054 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
3055 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
3056 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
3057 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
3058 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
3059 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
3060 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
3061 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
3062 now, too.
3063 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3064
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +00003065 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
3066 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
3067 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
3068
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +00003069 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
3070 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
3071 config file.
3072 [Steve Henson]
3073
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +00003074 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
3075 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
3076
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +00003077 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
3078 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
3079 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
3080 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
3081 [Ben Laurie]
3082
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +00003083 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
3084 [Steve Henson]
3085
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +00003086 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
3087 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3088
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +00003089 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
3090 [Ben Laurie]
3091
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +00003092 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
3093 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
3094 [Steve Henson]
3095
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00003096 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
3097 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
3098 [Steve Henson]
3099
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +00003100 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
3101 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
3102 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
3103 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
3104 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
3105 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
3106 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
3107 Ben Laurie]
3108
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +00003109 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
3110 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3111
3112 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
3113 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
3114 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
3115 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
3116 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3117
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003118 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
3119 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00003120 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003121 [Steve Henson]
3122
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00003123 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
3124 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for
3125 an example.
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003126 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00003127
Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +00003128 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
3129 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
3130 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
3131
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +00003132 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
3133 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
3134 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
3135 build instructions.
3136 [Steve Henson]
3137
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +00003138 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
3139 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
3140 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
3141 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
3142 [Steve Henson]
3143
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +00003144 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
3145 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
3146 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
3147 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
3148 [Ben Laurie]
3149
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00003150 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
3151 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
3152 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
3153 so it wasn't spotted.
3154 [Steve Henson, reported by Erwann ABALEA <eabalea@certplus.com>]
3155
Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +00003156 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
3157 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
3158 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
3159 vectors if you have them.
3160 [Ben Laurie]
3161
Ralf S. Engelschall2c6ccde1999-03-06 14:01:29 +00003162 *) Correct calculation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +00003163 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
3164 [Ben Laurie]
3165
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00003166 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
3167 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
3168 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
3169 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
3170 If you do a:
3171 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
3172 it will update them.
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00003173 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00003174
Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +00003175 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
3176 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
3177 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
3178 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
3179 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
3180 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
3181 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
3182 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3183
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +00003184 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
3185 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
3186 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
3187 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
3188 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
3189 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
3190 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
3191 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
3192 the crypto/md/ stuff).
3193 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3194
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +00003195 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
3196 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
3197 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
3198 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
3199 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
3200 [Steve Henson]
3201
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +00003202 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the
3203 INTEGER code.
3204 [Steve Henson]
3205
Mark J. Cox351d8991999-01-31 12:14:39 +00003206 *) Add new function, EVP_MD_CTX_copy() to replace frequent use of memcpy.
3207 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3208
Ralf S. Engelschallb621d771999-01-31 11:10:10 +00003209 *) Make sure `make rehash' target really finds the `openssl' program.
3210 [Ralf S. Engelschall, Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
3211
Ben Lauriea96e7811999-01-30 17:53:00 +00003212 *) Squeeze another 7% of speed out of MD5 assembler, at least on a P2. I'd
3213 like to hear about it if this slows down other processors.
3214 [Ben Laurie]
3215
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +00003216 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.
3217 [Alan Batie <batie@aahz.jf.intel.com>]
3218
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00003219 *) Fixed ms/32all.bat script: `no_asm' -> `no-asm'
3220 [Rainer W. Gerling <gerling@mpg-gv.mpg.de>]
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00003221
3222 *) New program nseq to manipulate netscape certificate sequences
3223 [Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall320a14c1998-12-23 12:09:47 +00003224
Dr. Stephen Henson9fe84291999-01-29 01:53:55 +00003225 *) Modify crl2pkcs7 so it supports multiple -certfile arguments. Fix a
3226 few typos.
3227 [Steve Henson]
3228
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +00003229 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION
3230 but the BN code had some problems that would cause failures when
3231 doing certificate verification and some other functions.
3232 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3233
Dr. Stephen Henson92c046c1999-01-28 00:16:44 +00003234 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
3235 [Steve Henson]
3236
Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00003237 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
3238 [Steve Henson]
3239
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +00003240 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
3241 [Steve Henson]
3242
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +00003243 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
3244 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
3245 [Steve Henson]
3246
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00003247 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
3248 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
3249 CA extensions.
3250 [Steve Henson]
3251
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00003252 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the
3253 error code, add initial support to X509_print() and x509 application.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00003254 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00003255
Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +00003256 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
3257 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
3258 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
3259 [Steve Henson]
3260
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00003261 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
3262 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
3263 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
3264 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
3265 properly to be processed.
3266 [Steve Henson]
3267
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +00003268 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
3269 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
3270 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
3271 [Ben Laurie]
3272
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +00003273 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.
3274 [Ben Laurie, reported by Jeremy Hylton <jeremy@cnri.reston.va.us>]
3275
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00003276 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
3277 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
3278 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
3279 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
3280 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
3281 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
3282 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
3283 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
3284 or delete all the .err files.
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00003285 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00003286
Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +00003287 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
3288 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
3289 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
3290 to regenerate it if needed.
3291 [Ben Laurie, reported (with fix for C version) by Jun-ichiro itojun
3292 Hagino <itojun@kame.net>]
3293
3294 *) File was opened incorrectly in randfile.c.
3295 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3296
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +00003297 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
3298 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
3299 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
3300 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
3301 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
3302 [Steve Henson]
3303
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +00003304 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.
3305 [Ulf Möller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3306
Ben Laurie512d2221999-01-17 14:14:41 +00003307 *) Remove pointless MD5 hash when using DSA keys in ca.
3308 [Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
3309
Ben Laurie2c1ef381999-01-17 14:10:08 +00003310 *) Generate an error if given an empty string as a cert directory. Also
3311 generate an error if handed NULL (previously returned 0 to indicate an
3312 error, but didn't set one).
3313 [Ben Laurie, reported by Anonymous <nobody@replay.com>]
3314
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +00003315 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
3316 [Ben Laurie]
3317
Dr. Stephen Hensonee13f9b1999-01-14 18:25:07 +00003318 *) Fix the dummy function BN_ref_mod_exp() in rsaref.c to have the correct
3319 parameters. This was causing a warning which killed off the Win32 compile.
3320 [Steve Henson]
3321
Dr. Stephen Henson27eb6221999-01-14 18:21:57 +00003322 *) Remove C++ style comments from crypto/bn/bn_local.h.
3323 [Neil Costigan <neil.costigan@celocom.com>]
3324
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +00003325 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
3326 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
3327 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
3328 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
3329 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
3330 OID is not part of the table.
3331 [Steve Henson]

Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00003394 *) First cut of a cleanup for apps/. First the `ssleay' program is now named
3395 `openssl' and second, the shortcut symlinks for the `openssl <command>'
3396 are no longer created. This way we have a single and consistent command
3397 line interface `openssl <command>', similar to `cvs <command>'.

3421
stephen792a9001998-12-31 01:35:07 +00003422 *) Enhanced the err-ins.pl script so it makes the error library number
3423 global and can add a library name. This is needed for external ASN1 and

3427 *) Fixed sk_insert which never worked properly.
3428 [Steve Henson]
3429

3436 into a single doc/ssleay.txt bundle. This way the information is still
3437 preserved but no longer messes up this directory. Now it's new room for
3438 the new set of documenation files.
3439 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3440
Ben Laurie4098e891998-12-29 21:43:55 +00003441 *) SETs were incorrectly DER encoded. This was a major pain, because they
3442 shared code with SEQUENCEs, which aren't coded the same. This means that
3443 almost everything to do with SETs or SEQUENCEs has either changed name or
