Ralf S. Engelschall651d0af1998-12-22 15:04:48 +00002 _______________
3
Richard Levittec5e85802000-09-24 17:31:37 +00004 Changes between 0.9.6 and 0.9.7 [xx XXX 2000]
5
Dr. Stephen Henson9d6b1ce2000-12-08 19:09:35 +00006 *) Merge in replacement ASN1 code from the ASN1 branch. This almost
7 completely replaces the old ASN1 functionality.
8 [Steve Henson]
9
Bodo Möller8dea52f2000-12-07 22:06:09 +000010 *) Change BN_mod_exp_recp so that negative moduli are tolerated
11 (the sign is ignored). Similarly, ignore the sign in BN_MONT_CTX_set
12 so that BN_mod_exp_mont and BN_mod_exp_mont_word work
13 for negative moduli.
14 [Bodo Moeller]
15
16 *) Fix BN_uadd and BN_usub: Always return non-negative results instead
17 of not touching the result's sign bit.
18 [Bodo Moeller]
19
Bodo Möller80d89e62000-12-07 08:48:58 +000020 *) BN_div bugfix: If the result is 0, the sign (res->neg) must not be
21 set.
22 [Bodo Moeller]
23
Geoff Thorpef1919c32000-12-04 03:35:35 +000024 *) Changed the LHASH code to use prototypes for callbacks, and created
25 macros to declare and implement thin (optionally static) functions
26 that provide type-safety and avoid function pointer casting for the
27 type-specific callbacks.
28 [Geoff Thorpe]
29
Ulf Möller1946cd82000-12-02 07:50:30 +000030 *) Use better test patterns in bntest.
31 [Ulf Möller]
32
Bodo Möllera47b5052000-12-04 19:04:55 +000033 *) Added Kerberos Cipher Suites to be used with TLS, as written in
34 RFC 2712.
Richard Levitte33479d22000-12-01 14:40:45 +000035 [Veers Staats <staatsvr@asc.hpc.mil>,
Ulf Möller1946cd82000-12-02 07:50:30 +000036 Jeffrey Altman <jaltman@columbia.edu>, via Richard Levitte]
Richard Levitte33479d22000-12-01 14:40:45 +000037
Ulf Möllera0230522000-12-01 01:53:08 +000038 *) rand_win.c fix for Borland C.
39 [Ulf Möller]
40
Bodo Möllerfc2e05c2000-11-30 22:34:57 +000041 *) BN_rshift bugfix for n == 0.
42 [Bodo Moeller]
43
Richard Levitte0ae485d2000-11-30 13:04:14 +000044 *) Reformat the FAQ so the different questions and answers can be divided
Ulf Möller4b757c82000-12-01 01:51:04 +000045 in sections depending on the subject.
Richard Levitte0ae485d2000-11-30 13:04:14 +000046 [Richard Levitte]
47
Richard Levitte20f88b92000-11-30 10:25:45 +000048 *) Have the zlib compression code load ZLIB.DLL dynamically under
49 Windows.
50 [Richard Levitte]
51
Bodo Möller6b5d39e2000-11-30 00:20:20 +000052 *) New function BN_mod_sqrt for computing square roots modulo a prime
Bodo Mölleraa66eba2000-12-06 21:33:58 +000053 (using the probabilistic Tonelli-Shanks algorithm unless
54 p == 3 (mod 4) or p == 5 (mod 8), which are cases that can
55 be handled deterministically).
Bodo Möller6b5d39e2000-11-30 00:20:20 +000056 [Lenka Fibikova <fibikova@exp-math.uni-essen.de>, Bodo Moeller]
57
Lutz Jänickec6a926d2000-11-29 18:06:18 +000058 *) Store verify_result within SSL_SESSION also for client side to
59 avoid potential security hole. (Re-used sessions on the client side
60 always resulted in verify_result==X509_V_OK, not using the original
61 result of the server certificate verification.)
62 [Lutz Jaenicke]
63
Bodo Möller499e1672000-11-29 09:41:19 +000064 *) Make BN_mod_inverse faster by explicitly handling small quotients
Bodo Möllerbdec3c52000-11-29 11:06:50 +000065 in the Euclid loop. (Speed gain about 20% for small moduli [256 or
66 512 bits], about 30% for larger ones [1024 or 2048 bits].)
Bodo Möller499e1672000-11-29 09:41:19 +000067 [Bodo Moeller]
68
Bodo Möller000e2172000-11-28 11:13:06 +000069 *) Disable ssl2_peek and ssl3_peek (i.e., both implementations
70 of SSL_peek) because they both are completely broken.
71 They will be fixed RSN by adding an additional 'peek' parameter
72 to the internal read functions.
73 [Bodo Moeller]
74
Bodo Möllerdcbd0d72000-11-27 21:17:20 +000075 *) New function BN_kronecker.
76 [Bodo Moeller]
77
78 *) Fix BN_gcd so that it works on negative inputs; the result is
79 positive unless both parameters are zero.
80 Previously something reasonably close to an infinite loop was
81 possible because numbers could be growing instead of shrinking
82 in the implementation of Euclid's algorithm.
83 [Bodo Moeller]
84
85 *) Fix BN_is_word() and BN_is_one() macros to take into account the
86 sign of the number in question.
87
88 Fix BN_is_word(a,w) to work correctly for w == 0.
89
90 The old BN_is_word(a,w) macro is now called BN_abs_is_word(a,w)
91 because its test if the absolute value of 'a' equals 'w'.
92 Note that BN_abs_is_word does *not* handle w == 0 reliably;
93 it exists mostly for use in the implementations of BN_is_zero(),
94 BN_is_one(), and BN_is_word().
95 [Bodo Moeller]
96
Geoff Thorpeef8b6012000-11-29 20:02:00 +000097 *) Initialise "ex_data" member of RSA/DSA/DH structures prior to calling
98 the method-specific "init()" handler. Also clean up ex_data after
99 calling the method-specific "finish()" handler. Previously, this was
100 happening the other way round.
Geoff Thorpe0ac87022000-11-26 18:39:27 +0000101 [Geoff Thorpe]
102
Bodo Möller78a0c1f2000-11-26 16:42:38 +0000103 *) New function BN_swap.
104 [Bodo Moeller]
105
106 *) Use BN_nnmod instead of BN_mod in crypto/bn/bn_exp.c so that
107 the exponentiation functions are more likely to produce reasonable
108 results on negative inputs.
109 [Bodo Moeller]
110
111 *) Change BN_mod_mul so that the result is always non-negative.
112 Previously, it could be negative if one of the factors was negative;
113 I don't think anyone really wanted that behaviour.
114 [Bodo Moeller]
115
116 *) Move BN_mod_... functions into new file crypto/bn/bn_mod.c
Ulf Möller1946cd82000-12-02 07:50:30 +0000117 (except for exponentiation, which stays in crypto/bn/bn_exp.c,
Bodo Möller78a0c1f2000-11-26 16:42:38 +0000118 and BN_mod_mul_reciprocal, which stays in crypto/bn/bn_recp.c)
119 and add new functions:
Bodo Möller5acaa492000-11-26 18:31:32 +0000120
Bodo Möller78a0c1f2000-11-26 16:42:38 +0000121 BN_nnmod
122 BN_mod_sqr
123 BN_mod_add
Bodo Möller5acaa492000-11-26 18:31:32 +0000124 BN_mod_add_quick
Bodo Möller78a0c1f2000-11-26 16:42:38 +0000125 BN_mod_sub
Bodo Möller5acaa492000-11-26 18:31:32 +0000126 BN_mod_sub_quick
127 BN_mod_lshift1
128 BN_mod_lshift1_quick
129 BN_mod_lshift
130 BN_mod_lshift_quick
131
Bodo Möller78a0c1f2000-11-26 16:42:38 +0000132 These functions always generate non-negative results.
Bodo Möller5acaa492000-11-26 18:31:32 +0000133
Bodo Möller78a0c1f2000-11-26 16:42:38 +0000134 BN_nnmod otherwise is like BN_mod (if BN_mod computes a remainder r
135 such that |m| < r < 0, BN_nnmod will output rem + |m| instead).
Bodo Möller5acaa492000-11-26 18:31:32 +0000136
137 BN_mod_XXX_quick(r, a, [b,] m) generates the same result as
138 BN_mod_XXX(r, a, [b,] m, ctx), but requires that a [and b]
139 be reduced modulo m.
Bodo Möller78a0c1f2000-11-26 16:42:38 +0000140 [Lenka Fibikova <fibikova@exp-math.uni-essen.de>, Bodo Moeller]
141
Richard Levittebaa257f2000-11-18 22:58:26 +0000142 *) Remove a few calls to bn_wexpand() in BN_sqr() (the one in there
143 was actually never needed) and in BN_mul(). The removal in BN_mul()
144 required a small change in bn_mul_part_recursive() and the addition
Ulf Möller1946cd82000-12-02 07:50:30 +0000145 of the functions bn_cmp_part_words(), bn_sub_part_words() and
146 bn_add_part_words(), which do the same thing as bn_cmp_words(),
Richard Levittebaa257f2000-11-18 22:58:26 +0000147 bn_sub_words() and bn_add_words() except they take arrays with
148 differing sizes.
149 [Richard Levitte]
150
Bodo Möllerdb70a3f2000-11-17 09:03:02 +0000151 *) In 'openssl passwd', verify passwords read from the terminal
152 unless the '-salt' option is used (which usually means that
153 verification would just waste user's time since the resulting
154 hash is going to be compared with some given password hash)
155 or the new '-noverify' option is used.
156
157 This is an incompatible change, but it does not affect
158 non-interactive use of 'openssl passwd' (passwords on the command
159 line, '-stdin' option, '-in ...' option) and thus should not
160 cause any problems.
161 [Bodo Moeller]
162
Richard Levitteccb96432000-11-08 17:51:37 +0000163 *) Remove all references to RSAref, since there's no more need for it.
164 [Richard Levitte]
165
Bodo Möller7f7b8d62000-11-08 10:05:34 +0000166 *) Increase BN_CTX_NUM (the number of BIGNUMs in a BN_CTX) to 16.
167 The previous value, 12, was not always sufficient for BN_mod_exp().
168 [Bodo Moeller]
169
Richard Levittee06433d2000-11-07 11:25:26 +0000170 *) Make DSO load along a path given through an environment variable
171 (SHLIB_PATH) with shl_load().
172 [Richard Levitte]
173
Richard Levitte10e473e2000-11-06 22:15:50 +0000174 *) Constify the ENGINE code as a result of BIGNUM constification.
Richard Levitte55b3c872000-11-06 23:29:52 +0000175 Also constify the RSA code and most things related to it. In a
176 few places, most notable in the depth of the ASN.1 code, ugly
177 casts back to non-const were required (to be solved at a later
178 time)
Richard Levitte10e473e2000-11-06 22:15:50 +0000179 [Richard Levitte]
180
Richard Levittee7ef1a52000-11-06 22:03:00 +0000181 *) Make it so the openssl application has all engines loaded by default.
182 [Richard Levitte]
183
Richard Levitte020fc822000-11-06 21:15:54 +0000184 *) Constify the BIGNUM routines a little more.
185 [Richard Levitte]
186
Richard Levitte6b77e6d2000-11-06 06:52:47 +0000187 *) Make sure that shared libraries get the internal name engine with
188 the full version number and not just 0. This should mark the
189 shared libraries as not backward compatible. Of course, this should
190 be changed again when we can guarantee backward binary compatibility.
191 [Richard Levitte]
192
Richard Levitte11c0f122000-11-02 20:33:04 +0000193 *) Add the following functions:
194
195 ENGINE_load_cswift()
196 ENGINE_load_chil()
197 ENGINE_load_atalla()
198 ENGINE_load_nuron()
199 ENGINE_load_builtin_engines()
200
201 That way, an application can itself choose if external engines that
202 are built-in in OpenSSL shall ever be used or not. The benefit is
203 that applications won't have to be linked with libdl or other dso
204 libraries unless it's really needed.
205
206 Changed 'openssl engine' to load all engines on demand.
207 Changed the engine header files to avoid the duplication of some
208 declarations (they differed!).
209 [Richard Levitte]
210
Richard Levitte69e78052000-11-02 19:24:48 +0000211 *) 'openssl engine' can now list capabilities.
212 [Richard Levitte]
213
Richard Levittee264cfe2000-11-02 18:58:43 +0000214 *) Better error reporting in 'openssl engine'.
215 [Richard Levitte]
216
Bodo Möller15d52dd2000-11-02 10:35:10 +0000217 *) Never call load_dh_param(NULL) in s_server.
218 [Bodo Moeller]
219
Richard Levitte14c6d272000-11-01 02:57:35 +0000220 *) Add engine application. It can currently list engines by name and
221 identity, and test if they are actually available.
222 [Richard Levitte]
223
Richard Levittedcea8e12000-11-01 00:05:04 +0000224 *) Add support for shared libraries under Irix.
225 [Albert Chin-A-Young <china@thewrittenword.com>]
226
Richard Levitte501ebf12000-10-31 23:26:32 +0000227 *) Improve RPM specification file by forcing symbolic linking and making
228 sure the installed documentation is also owned by root.root.
229 [Damien Miller <djm@mindrot.org>]
230
Richard Levitte815c83f2000-10-31 23:14:19 +0000231 *) Add configuration option to build on Linux on both big-endian and
232 little-endian MIPS.
233 [Ralf Baechle <ralf@uni-koblenz.de>]
234
Richard Levitte3aba98e2000-10-28 22:44:03 +0000235 *) Give the OpenSSL applications more possibilities to make use of
236 keys (public as well as private) handled by engines.
237 [Richard Levitte]
238
Richard Levitte7c155332000-10-27 11:22:17 +0000239 *) Add OCSP code that comes from CertCo.
240 [Richard Levitte]
241
Ulf Möller34a14882000-10-26 22:24:49 +0000242 *) Add VMS support for the Rijndael code.
Richard Levitte5270e702000-10-26 21:07:28 +0000243 [Richard Levitte]
244
245 *) Added untested support for Nuron crypto accelerator.
246 [Ben Laurie]
247
248 *) Add support for external cryptographic devices. This code was
249 previously distributed separately as the "engine" branch.
250 [Geoff Thorpe, Richard Levitte]
251
Geoff Thorpe1df586b2000-10-26 20:02:33 +0000252 *) Rework the filename-translation in the DSO code. It is now possible to
253 have far greater control over how a "name" is turned into a filename
254 depending on the operating environment and any oddities about the
255 different shared library filenames on each system.
256 [Geoff Thorpe]
257
Richard Levitte53400da2000-10-21 22:53:32 +0000258 *) Support threads on FreeBSD-elf in Configure.
259 [Richard Levitte]
260
Richard Levitte0fd44e22000-10-21 21:24:11 +0000261 *) Add the possibility to create shared libraries on HP-UX
262 [Richard Levitte]
263
Dr. Stephen Henson627ec352000-10-20 00:36:45 +0000264 *) Fix for SHA1 assembly problem with MASM: it produces
265 warnings about corrupt line number information when assembling
266 with debugging information. This is caused by the overlapping
267 of two sections.
268 [Bernd Matthes <mainbug@celocom.de>, Steve Henson]
269
Richard Levitte567f17c2000-10-21 20:01:34 +0000270 *) NCONF changes.
271 NCONF_get_number() has no error checking at all. As a replacement,
272 NCONF_get_number_e() is defined (_e for "error checking") and is
273 promoted strongly. The old NCONF_get_number is kept around for
274 binary backward compatibility.
275 Make it possible for methods to load from something other than a BIO,
276 by providing a function pointer that is given a name instead of a BIO.
277 For example, this could be used to load configuration data from an
278 LDAP server.
279 [Richard Levitte]
280
Dr. Stephen Henson71d525c2000-10-14 23:51:52 +0000281 *) Fix typo in get_cert_by_subject() in by_dir.c
282 [Jean-Marc Desperrier <jean-marc.desperrier@certplus.com>]
283
Richard Levittea22fb392000-10-13 15:25:06 +0000284 *) Rework the system to generate shared libraries:
285
286 - Make note of the expected extension for the shared libraries and
287 if there is a need for symbolic links from for example libcrypto.so.0
288 to libcrypto.so.0.9.7. There is extended info in Configure for
289 that.
290
291 - Make as few rebuilds of the shared libraries as possible.
292
293 - Still avoid linking the OpenSSL programs with the shared libraries.
294
295 - When installing, install the shared libraries separately from the
296 static ones.
297 [Richard Levitte]
298
Dr. Stephen Henson924046c2000-10-12 01:50:33 +0000299 *) Fix for non blocking accept BIOs. Added new I/O special reason
300 BIO_RR_ACCEPT to cover this case. Previously use of accept BIOs
301 with non blocking I/O was not possible because no retry code was
302 implemented. Also added new SSL code SSL_WANT_ACCEPT to cover
303 this case.
304 [Steve Henson]
305
Richard Levitte3ab56512000-10-14 20:09:54 +0000306 *) Added the beginnings of Rijndael support.
307 [Ben Laurie]
308
Dr. Stephen Hensond0c98582000-10-04 01:16:32 +0000309 *) Fix for bug in DirectoryString mask setting. Add support for
Dr. Stephen Henson8ca533e2000-10-06 11:51:47 +0000310 X509_NAME_print_ex() in 'req' and X509_print_ex() function
311 to allow certificate printing to more controllable, additional
312 'certopt' option to 'x509' to allow new printing options to be
313 set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond0c98582000-10-04 01:16:32 +0000314 [Steve Henson]
315
Richard Levitteef71cb62000-10-01 21:46:43 +0000316 *) Clean old EAY MD5 hack from e_os.h.
317 [Richard Levitte]
318
Bodo Möller3a0afe12000-09-26 11:39:37 +0000319 *) Fix SSL_CTX_set_read_ahead macro to actually use its argument.
320
321 Copy SSL_CTX's read_ahead flag to SSL object directly in SSL_new
322 and not in SSL_clear because the latter is also used by the
323 accept/connect functions; previously, the settings made by
324 SSL_set_read_ahead would be lost during the handshake.
325 [Bodo Moeller; problems reported by Anders Gertz <gertz@epact.se>]
326
Richard Levitte88aeb642000-09-25 11:12:27 +0000327 *) Correct util/mkdef.pl to be selective about disabled algorithms.
328 Previously, it would create entries for disableed algorithms no
329 matter what.
330 [Richard Levitte]
Richard Levittec5e85802000-09-24 17:31:37 +0000331
Richard Levitte0e8f2fd2000-09-24 15:21:30 +0000332 Changes between 0.9.5a and 0.9.6 [24 Sep 2000]
Richard Levittec90341a2000-04-01 11:24:27 +0000333
Bodo Möllerf1192b72000-09-22 21:39:33 +0000334 *) In ssl23_get_client_hello, generate an error message when faced
335 with an initial SSL 3.0/TLS record that is too small to contain the
336 first two bytes of the ClientHello message, i.e. client_version.
337 (Note that this is a pathologic case that probably has never happened
338 in real life.) The previous approach was to use the version number
Bodo Möller5a5accd2000-09-22 21:45:49 +0000339 from the record header as a substitute; but our protocol choice
Bodo Möllerf1192b72000-09-22 21:39:33 +0000340 should not depend on that one because it is not authenticated
341 by the Finished messages.
342 [Bodo Moeller]
343
Ulf Möllerd49da3a2000-09-23 05:17:40 +0000344 *) More robust randomness gathering functions for Windows.
345 [Jeffrey Altman <jaltman@columbia.edu>]
346
Dr. Stephen Hensondbba8902000-09-22 21:32:08 +0000347 *) For compatibility reasons if the flag X509_V_FLAG_ISSUER_CHECK is
348 not set then we don't setup the error code for issuer check errors
349 to avoid possibly overwriting other errors which the callback does
350 handle. If an application does set the flag then we assume it knows
351 what it is doing and can handle the new informational codes
352 appropriately.
353 [Steve Henson]
354
Dr. Stephen Henson6cffb202000-09-21 18:57:00 +0000355 *) Fix for a nasty bug in ASN1_TYPE handling. ASN1_TYPE is used for
356 a general "ANY" type, as such it should be able to decode anything
357 including tagged types. However it didn't check the class so it would
358 wrongly interpret tagged types in the same way as their universal
359 counterpart and unknown types were just rejected. Changed so that the
360 tagged and unknown types are handled in the same way as a SEQUENCE:
361 that is the encoding is stored intact. There is also a new type
362 "V_ASN1_OTHER" which is used when the class is not universal, in this
363 case we have no idea what the actual type is so we just lump them all
364 together.
365 [Steve Henson]
366
Richard Levitte645749e2000-09-20 13:55:50 +0000367 *) On VMS, stdout may very well lead to a file that is written to
368 in a record-oriented fashion. That means that every write() will
369 write a separate record, which will be read separately by the
370 programs trying to read from it. This can be very confusing.
371
372 The solution is to put a BIO filter in the way that will buffer
373 text until a linefeed is reached, and then write everything a
374 line at a time, so every record written will be an actual line,
375 not chunks of lines and not (usually doesn't happen, but I've
376 seen it once) several lines in one record. BIO_f_linebuffer() is
377 the answer.
378
379 Currently, it's a VMS-only method, because that's where it has
380 been tested well enough.
381 [Richard Levitte]
382
Bodo Möllerfe035192000-09-19 23:25:00 +0000383 *) Remove 'optimized' squaring variant in BN_mod_mul_montgomery,

388
Dr. Stephen Henson730e37e2000-09-18 12:30:57 +0000389 *) Disable the check for content being present when verifying detached

391 include zero length content when signing messages.
392 [Steve Henson]
393
Bodo Möller07fcf422000-09-17 01:23:53 +0000394 *) New BIO_shutdown_wr macro, which invokes the BIO_C_SHUTDOWN_WR

403 [Ulf Möller]
404
Richard Levitte775bceb2000-09-14 15:28:44 +0000405 *) Add RPM specification openssl.spec and modify it to build three
406 packages. The default package contains applications, application
407 documentation and run-time libraries. The devel package contains
408 include files, static libraries and function documentation. The
409 doc package contains the contents of the doc directory. The original

424 behaviour that SSL_read may result in SSL_ERROR_WANT_READ (even if
425 the underlying transport is blocking) if a handshake took place.
426 (The default behaviour is needed by applications such as s_client
427 and s_server that use select() to determine when to use SSL_read;

429 just makes things more complicated.)
430 [Bodo Moeller]
431
Ben Laurie2959f292000-09-11 17:58:09 +0000432 *) Add RAND_egd_bytes(), which gives control over the number of bytes read

454
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000455 *) Allow the verify time to be set by an application,
456 rather than always using the current time.
457 [Steve Henson]
458
459 *) Phase 2 verify code reorganisation. The certificate
460 verify code now looks up an issuer certificate by a
461 number of criteria: subject name, authority key id
462 and key usage. It also verifies self signed certificates
463 by the same criteria. The main comparison function is
464 X509_check_issued() which performs these checks.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000465
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000466 Lot of changes were necessary in order to support this
467 without completely rewriting the lookup code.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000468
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000469 Authority and subject key identifier are now cached.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000470
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000471 The LHASH 'certs' is X509_STORE has now been replaced
472 by a STACK_OF(X509_OBJECT). This is mainly because an
473 LHASH can't store or retrieve multiple objects with
474 the same hash value.
475
476 As a result various functions (which were all internal
477 use only) have changed to handle the new X509_STORE
478 structure. This will break anything that messed round
479 with X509_STORE internally.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000480
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000481 The functions X509_STORE_add_cert() now checks for an
482 exact match, rather than just subject name.
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000483
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000484 The X509_STORE API doesn't directly support the retrieval
485 of multiple certificates matching a given criteria, however
486 this can be worked round by performing a lookup first
487 (which will fill the cache with candidate certificates)
488 and then examining the cache for matches. This is probably
489 the best we can do without throwing out X509_LOOKUP
490 entirely (maybe later...).
Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000491
Dr. Stephen Hensonbbb72002000-09-05 22:30:38 +0000492 The X509_VERIFY_CTX structure has been enhanced considerably.
493
494 All certificate lookup operations now go via a get_issuer()
495 callback. Although this currently uses an X509_STORE it
496 can be replaced by custom lookups. This is a simple way
497 to bypass the X509_STORE hackery necessary to make this
498 work and makes it possible to use more efficient techniques
499 in future. A very simple version which uses a simple
500 STACK for its trusted certificate store is also provided
501 using X509_STORE_CTX_trusted_stack().
502
503 The verify_cb() and verify() callbacks now have equivalents
504 in the X509_STORE_CTX structure.
505
506 X509_STORE_CTX also has a 'flags' field which can be used
507 to customise the verify behaviour.

Dr. Stephen Henson2f043892000-09-05 17:53:58 +0000509
Dr. Stephen Henson34216c02000-09-05 13:27:57 +0000510 *) Add new PKCS#7 signing option PKCS7_NOSMIMECAP which
511 excludes S/MIME capabilities.
512 [Steve Henson]
513
514 *) When a certificate request is read in keep a copy of the
515 original encoding of the signed data and use it when outputing
516 again. Signatures then use the original encoding rather than
517 a decoded, encoded version which may cause problems if the
518 request is improperly encoded.
519 [Steve Henson]
520
Bodo Mölleraffadbe2000-09-04 15:47:17 +0000521 *) For consistency with other BIO_puts implementations, call

523 BIO_write(b, ...).
Bodo Möller22c7ea42000-09-05 12:46:10 +0000524
525 In BIO_puts, increment b->num_write as in BIO_write.

527
Bodo Möllerbbb8de02000-09-04 15:34:43 +0000528 *) Fix BN_mul_word for the case where the word is 0. (We have to use
529 BN_zero, we may not return a BIGNUM with an array consisting of
530 words set to zero.)
531 [Bodo Moeller]
532
533 *) Avoid calling abort() from within the library when problems are
534 detected, except if preprocessor symbols have been defined
535 (such as REF_CHECK, BN_DEBUG etc.).
536 [Bodo Moeller]
537
Dr. Stephen Hensonbd08a2b2000-09-03 23:13:48 +0000538 *) New openssl application 'rsautl'. This utility can be
539 used for low level RSA operations. DER public key
540 BIO/fp routines also added.
541 [Steve Henson]
542
Bodo Möllera545c6f2000-09-01 09:54:25 +0000543 *) New Configure entry and patches for compiling on QNX 4.
544 [Andreas Schneider <andreas@ds3.etech.fh-hamburg.de>]
545
Ben Laurie7049ef52000-08-30 18:14:28 +0000546 *) A demo state-machine implementation was sponsored by

548 demos/state_machine.
549 [Ben Laurie]
550
Dr. Stephen Henson7df1c722000-08-30 16:14:29 +0000551 *) New options added to the 'dgst' utility for signature

553 [Steve Henson]
554
Dr. Stephen Hensond096b522000-08-22 22:20:25 +0000555 *) Unrecognized PKCS#7 content types are now handled via a
556 catch all ASN1_TYPE structure. This allows unsupported
557 types to be stored as a "blob" and an application can
558 encode and decode it manually.
559 [Steve Henson]
560
Dr. Stephen Henson7df1c722000-08-30 16:14:29 +0000561 *) Fix various signed/unsigned issues to make a_strex.c
Dr. Stephen Henson469938c2000-08-22 12:54:21 +0000562 compile under VC++.
563 [Oscar Jacobsson <oscar.jacobsson@celocom.com>]
564
565 *) ASN1 fixes. i2d_ASN1_OBJECT was not returning the correct
566 length if passed a buffer. ASN1_INTEGER_to_BN failed
567 if passed a NULL BN and its argument was negative.
568 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Sven Heiberg <sven@tartu.cyber.ee>]
569
Dr. Stephen Hensoneaa28182000-08-21 22:02:23 +0000570 *) Modification to PKCS#7 encoding routines to output definite
571 length encoding. Since currently the whole structures are in
572 memory there's not real point in using indefinite length
573 constructed encoding. However if OpenSSL is compiled with
574 the flag PKCS7_INDEFINITE_ENCODING the old form is used.
575 [Steve Henson]
576
Richard Levittee6629832000-08-18 09:36:59 +0000577 *) Added BIO_vprintf() and BIO_vsnprintf().
578 [Richard Levitte]
579
Richard Levitte6fd5a042000-08-17 23:27:03 +0000580 *) Added more prefixes to parse for in the the strings written
581 through a logging bio, to cover all the levels that are available
582 through syslog. The prefixes are now:
583
584 PANIC, EMERG, EMR => LOG_EMERG
585 ALERT, ALR => LOG_ALERT
586 CRIT, CRI => LOG_CRIT
587 ERROR, ERR => LOG_ERR
588 WARNING, WARN, WAR => LOG_WARNING
589 NOTICE, NOTE, NOT => LOG_NOTICE
590 INFO, INF => LOG_INFO
591 DEBUG, DBG => LOG_DEBUG
592
593 and as before, if none of those prefixes are present at the
594 beginning of the string, LOG_ERR is chosen.
595
596 On Win32, the LOG_* levels are mapped according to this:
597
598 LOG_EMERG, LOG_ALERT, LOG_CRIT, LOG_ERR => EVENTLOG_ERROR_TYPE
599 LOG_WARNING => EVENTLOG_WARNING_TYPE
600 LOG_NOTICE, LOG_INFO, LOG_DEBUG => EVENTLOG_INFORMATION_TYPE
601
602 [Richard Levitte]
603
Richard Levitte368f8552000-08-17 10:25:46 +0000604 *) Made it possible to reconfigure with just the configuration
605 argument "reconf" or "reconfigure". The command line arguments
606 are stored in Makefile.ssl in the variable CONFIGURE_ARGS,
607 and are retrieved from there when reconfiguring.
608 [Richard Levitte]
609
Richard Levitte30094582000-08-14 14:05:53 +0000610 *) MD4 implemented.

Richard Levitte88364bc2000-08-11 19:43:20 +0000613 *) Add the arguments -CAfile and -CApath to the pkcs12 utility.
614 [Richard Levitte]
615
Dr. Stephen Hensond4fbe312000-08-06 18:43:32 +0000616 *) The obj_dat.pl script was messing up the sorting of object
617 names. The reason was that it compared the quoted version
618 of strings as a result "OCSP" > "OCSP Signing" because
619 " > SPACE. Changed script to store unquoted versions of
620 names and add quotes on output. It was also omitting some
621 names from the lookup table if they were given a default
622 value (that is if SN is missing it is given the same
623 value as LN and vice versa), these are now added on the
624 grounds that if an object has a name we should be able to
625 look it up. Finally added warning output when duplicate
626 short or long names are found.
627 [Steve Henson]
628
Dr. Stephen Henson2d978cb2000-08-04 00:01:39 +0000629 *) Changes needed for Tandem NSK.

Bodo Mölleraa826d82000-07-29 19:27:20 +0000632 *) Fix SSL 2.0 rollback checking: Due to an off-by-one error in
633 RSA_padding_check_SSLv23(), special padding was never detected
634 and thus the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 countermeasure against protocol
635 version rollback attacks was not effective.
636
Bodo Möller37569e62000-07-29 18:50:41 +0000637 In s23_clnt.c, don't use special rollback-attack detection padding
638 (RSA_SSLV23_PADDING) if SSL 2.0 is the only protocol enabled in the
639 client; similarly, in s23_srvr.c, don't do the rollback check if
640 SSL 2.0 is the only protocol enabled in the server.
641 [Bodo Moeller]
642
Richard Levitteca1e4652000-07-27 17:28:25 +0000643 *) Make it possible to get hexdumps of unprintable data with 'openssl
644 asn1parse'. By implication, the functions ASN1_parse_dump() and
645 BIO_dump_indent() are added.
646 [Richard Levitte]
647
Dr. Stephen Hensona6575462000-07-28 01:58:15 +0000648 *) New functions ASN1_STRING_print_ex() and X509_NAME_print_ex()
649 these print out strings and name structures based on various
650 flags including RFC2253 support and proper handling of
651 multibyte characters. Added options to the 'x509' utility
652 to allow the various flags to be set.
653 [Steve Henson]
654
Dr. Stephen Henson284ef5f2000-07-26 01:18:37 +0000655 *) Various fixes to use ASN1_TIME instead of ASN1_UTCTIME.
656 Also change the functions X509_cmp_current_time() and
657 X509_gmtime_adj() work with an ASN1_TIME structure,
658 this will enable certificates using GeneralizedTime in validity
659 dates to be checked.
660 [Steve Henson]
661
662 *) Make the NEG_PUBKEY_BUG code (which tolerates invalid
663 negative public key encodings) on by default,
664 NO_NEG_PUBKEY_BUG can be set to disable it.
665 [Steve Henson]
666
667 *) New function c2i_ASN1_OBJECT() which acts on ASN1_OBJECT
668 content octets. An i2c_ASN1_OBJECT is unnecessary because
669 the encoding can be trivially obtained from the structure.
670 [Steve Henson]
671
Bodo Möllerfa729132000-07-21 15:17:04 +0000672 *) crypto/err.c locking bugfix: Use write locks (CRYPTO_w_[un]lock),
673 not read locks (CRYPTO_r_[un]lock).
674 [Bodo Moeller]
675
Richard Levitteb436a982000-07-21 15:08:53 +0000676 *) A first attempt at creating official support for shared
677 libraries through configuration. I've kept it so the
678 default is static libraries only, and the OpenSSL programs
679 are always statically linked for now, but there are
680 preparations for dynamic linking in place.
681 This has been tested on Linux and True64.
682 [Richard Levitte]
683
Ulf Möllerc0722722000-07-19 21:35:35 +0000684 *) Randomness polling function for Win9x, as described in:
685 Peter Gutmann, Software Generation of Practically Strong
686 Random Numbers.
687 [Ulf Möller]
688
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd13f0e2000-07-12 23:55:30 +0000689 *) Fix so PRNG is seeded in req if using an already existing
690 DSA key.
691 [Steve Henson]
692
Dr. Stephen Henson094fe662000-07-10 18:33:05 +0000693 *) New options to smime application. -inform and -outform
694 allow alternative formats for the S/MIME message including
695 PEM and DER. The -content option allows the content to be
696 specified separately. This should allow things like Netscape
697 form signing output easier to verify.
698 [Steve Henson]
699
700 *) Fix the ASN1 encoding of tags using the 'long form'.
701 [Steve Henson]
702
Dr. Stephen Hensona338e212000-07-07 13:24:36 +0000703 *) New ASN1 functions, i2c_* and c2i_* for INTEGER and BIT
704 STRING types. These convert content octets to and from the
705 underlying type. The actual tag and length octets are
706 already assumed to have been read in and checked. These
707 are needed because all other string types have virtually
708 identical handling apart from the tag. By having versions
709 of the ASN1 functions that just operate on content octets
710 IMPLICIT tagging can be handled properly. It also allows
711 the ASN1_ENUMERATED code to be cut down because ASN1_ENUMERATED
712 and ASN1_INTEGER are identical apart from the tag.
713 [Steve Henson]
714
Richard Levitted5870bb2000-07-05 02:52:47 +0000715 *) Change the handling of OID objects as follows:
716
717 - New object identifiers are inserted in objects.txt, following
718 the syntax given in objects.README.
719 - objects.pl is used to process obj_mac.num and create a new
720 obj_mac.h.
721 - obj_dat.pl is used to create a new obj_dat.h, using the data in
722 obj_mac.h.
723
724 This is currently kind of a hack, and the perl code in objects.pl
725 isn't very elegant, but it works as I intended. The simplest way
726 to check that it worked correctly is to look in obj_dat.h and
727 check the array nid_objs and make sure the objects haven't moved
728 around (this is important!). Additions are OK, as well as
729 consistent name changes.
730 [Richard Levitte]
731
Bodo Möller1f4643a2000-06-23 18:00:16 +0000732 *) Add BSD-style MD5-based passwords to 'openssl passwd' (option '-1').
733 [Bodo Moeller]
734
Richard Levittefb0b8442000-06-22 09:19:59 +0000735 *) Addition of the command line parameter '-rand file' to 'openssl req'.
Richard Levitte1023b122000-06-22 21:17:46 +0000736 The given file adds to whatever has already been seeded into the
737 random pool through the RANDFILE configuration file option or
738 environment variable, or the default random state file.
Richard Levittefb0b8442000-06-22 09:19:59 +0000739 [Richard Levitte]
740
Dr. Stephen Henson4dd45352000-06-22 00:34:27 +0000741 *) mkstack.pl now sorts each macro group into lexical order.
742 Previously the output order depended on the order the files
743 appeared in the directory, resulting in needless rewriting
744 of safestack.h .
745 [Steve Henson]
746
Dr. Stephen Henson13083212000-06-21 02:25:30 +0000747 *) Patches to make OpenSSL compile under Win32 again. Mostly
748 work arounds for the VC++ problem that it treats func() as
749 func(void). Also stripped out the parts of mkdef.pl that
750 added extra typesafe functions: these no longer exist.
751 [Steve Henson]
752
Dr. Stephen Henson3aceb942000-06-16 23:29:26 +0000753 *) Reorganisation of the stack code. The macros are now all
754 collected in safestack.h . Each macro is defined in terms of
755 a "stack macro" of the form SKM_<name>(type, a, b). The
756 DEBUG_SAFESTACK is now handled in terms of function casts,
757 this has the advantage of retaining type safety without the
758 use of additional functions. If DEBUG_SAFESTACK is not defined
759 then the non typesafe macros are used instead. Also modified the
760 mkstack.pl script to handle the new form. Needs testing to see
761 if which (if any) compilers it chokes and maybe make DEBUG_SAFESTACK
Dr. Stephen Henson7ef82062000-06-20 18:45:28 +0000762 the default if no major problems. Similar behaviour for ASN1_SET_OF
763 and PKCS12_STACK_OF.
Dr. Stephen Henson3aceb942000-06-16 23:29:26 +0000764 [Steve Henson]
765
Dr. Stephen Hensond3ed8ce2000-06-15 23:48:05 +0000766 *) When some versions of IIS use the 'NET' form of private key the
767 key derivation algorithm is different. Normally MD5(password) is
768 used as a 128 bit RC4 key. In the modified case
769 MD5(MD5(password) + "SGCKEYSALT") is used insted. Added some
770 new functions i2d_RSA_NET(), d2i_RSA_NET() etc which are the same
771 as the old Netscape_RSA functions except they have an additional
772 'sgckey' parameter which uses the modified algorithm. Also added
773 an -sgckey command line option to the rsa utility. Thanks to
774 Adrian Peck <bertie@ncipher.com> for posting details of the modified
775 algorithm to openssl-dev.
776 [Steve Henson]
777
Dr. Stephen Hensone366f2b2000-06-11 15:43:17 +0000778 *) The evp_local.h macros were using 'c.##kname' which resulted in
779 invalid expansion on some systems (SCO 5.0.5 for example).
780 Corrected to 'c.kname'.
781 [Phillip Porch <root@theporch.com>]
782
Dr. Stephen Hensona91dedc2000-06-11 12:18:15 +0000783 *) New X509_get1_email() and X509_REQ_get1_email() functions that return
784 a STACK of email addresses from a certificate or request, these look
785 in the subject name and the subject alternative name extensions and
786 omit any duplicate addresses.
787 [Steve Henson]
788
Bodo Möllerdc434bb2000-06-08 20:26:03 +0000789 *) Re-implement BN_mod_exp2_mont using independent (and larger) windows.
790 This makes DSA verification about 2 % faster.
791 [Bodo Moeller]
792
793 *) Increase maximum window size in BN_mod_exp_... to 6 bits instead of 5
794 (meaning that now 2^5 values will be precomputed, which is only 4 KB
795 plus overhead for 1024 bit moduli).
796 This makes exponentiations about 0.5 % faster for 1024 bit
797 exponents (as measured by "openssl speed rsa2048").
798 [Bodo Moeller]
799
Bodo Möller947b3b82000-06-08 15:01:14 +0000800 *) Rename memory handling macros to avoid conflicts with other
801 software:
802 Malloc => OPENSSL_malloc
803 Malloc_locked => OPENSSL_malloc_locked
804 Realloc => OPENSSL_realloc
805 Free => OPENSSL_free
806 [Richard Levitte]
807
Bodo Möller482a9d42000-06-10 12:05:52 +0000808 *) New function BN_mod_exp_mont_word for small bases (roughly 15%
809 faster than BN_mod_exp_mont, i.e. 7% for a full DH exchange).
Bodo Möller6dad7bd2000-06-07 21:29:25 +0000810 [Bodo Moeller]
811
Ulf Möllerbe5d92e2000-06-03 23:23:10 +0000812 *) CygWin32 support.
813 [John Jarvie <jjarvie@newsguy.com>]
814
Geoff Thorpee41c8d62000-06-01 05:13:52 +0000815 *) The type-safe stack code has been rejigged. It is now only compiled
816 in when OpenSSL is configured with the DEBUG_SAFESTACK option and
817 by default all type-specific stack functions are "#define"d back to
818 standard stack functions. This results in more streamlined output
819 but retains the type-safety checking possibilities of the original
820 approach.
821 [Geoff Thorpe]
822
Geoff Thorpeccd86b62000-06-01 02:36:58 +0000823 *) The STACK code has been cleaned up, and certain type declarations
824 that didn't make a lot of sense have been brought in line. This has
825 also involved a cleanup of sorts in safestack.h to more correctly
826 map type-safe stack functions onto their plain stack counterparts.
827 This work has also resulted in a variety of "const"ifications of
828 lots of the code, especially "_cmp" operations which should normally
829 be prototyped with "const" parameters anyway.
830 [Geoff Thorpe]
831
Bodo Möller361ee972000-05-30 21:44:36 +0000832 *) When generating bytes for the first time in md_rand.c, 'stir the pool'
833 by seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes (with zero entropy count).
834 (The PRNG state consists of two parts, the large pool 'state' and 'md',
835 where all of 'md' is used each time the PRNG is used, but 'state'
836 is used only indexed by a cyclic counter. As entropy may not be
837 well distributed from the beginning, 'md' is important as a
838 chaining variable. However, the output function chains only half
839 of 'md', i.e. 80 bits. ssleay_rand_add, on the other hand, chains
840 all of 'md', and seeding with STATE_SIZE dummy bytes will result
841 in all of 'state' being rewritten, with the new values depending
842 on virtually all of 'md'. This overcomes the 80 bit limitation.)
843 [Bodo Moeller]
844
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000845 *) In ssl/s2_clnt.c and ssl/s3_clnt.c, call ERR_clear_error() when
846 the handshake is continued after ssl_verify_cert_chain();
847 otherwise, if SSL_VERIFY_NONE is set, remaining error codes
848 can lead to 'unexplainable' connection aborts later.
849 [Bodo Moeller; problem tracked down by Lutz Jaenicke]
850
851 *) Major EVP API cipher revision.
852 Add hooks for extra EVP features. This allows various cipher
853 parameters to be set in the EVP interface. Support added for variable
854 key length ciphers via the EVP_CIPHER_CTX_set_key_length() function and
855 setting of RC2 and RC5 parameters.
856
857 Modify EVP_OpenInit() and EVP_SealInit() to cope with variable key length
858 ciphers.
859
860 Remove lots of duplicated code from the EVP library. For example *every*
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000861 cipher init() function handles the 'iv' in the same way according to the
862 cipher mode. They also all do nothing if the 'key' parameter is NULL and
863 for CFB and OFB modes they zero ctx->num.
864
Dr. Stephen Henson49528752000-05-30 18:26:22 +0000865 New functionality allows removal of S/MIME code RC2 hack.
866
Dr. Stephen Henson57ae2e22000-05-30 02:10:57 +0000867 Most of the routines have the same form and so can be declared in terms
868 of macros.
869
Dr. Stephen Henson360370d2000-05-28 12:44:46 +0000870 By shifting this to the top level EVP_CipherInit() it can be removed from
871 all individual ciphers. If the cipher wants to handle IVs or keys
872 differently it can set the EVP_CIPH_CUSTOM_IV or EVP_CIPH_ALWAYS_CALL_INIT
873 flags.
Dr. Stephen Hensonbe06a932000-05-27 12:38:43 +0000874
875 Change lots of functions like EVP_EncryptUpdate() to now return a
876 value: although software versions of the algorithms cannot fail
877 any installed hardware versions can.
Dr. Stephen Henson7f060602000-05-26 23:51:35 +0000878 [Steve Henson]
879
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000880 *) Implement SSL_OP_TLS_ROLLBACK_BUG: In ssl3_get_client_key_exchange, if
881 this option is set, tolerate broken clients that send the negotiated
882 protocol version number instead of the requested protocol version
883 number.
884 [Bodo Moeller]
885
886 *) Call dh_tmp_cb (set by ..._TMP_DH_CB) with correct 'is_export' flag;
887 i.e. non-zero for export ciphersuites, zero otherwise.
888 Previous versions had this flag inverted, inconsistent with
889 rsa_tmp_cb (..._TMP_RSA_CB).
890 [Bodo Moeller; problem reported by Amit Chopra]
891
Dr. Stephen Hensonb4b41f42000-05-24 13:09:59 +0000892 *) Add missing DSA library text string. Work around for some IIS
893 key files with invalid SEQUENCE encoding.
894 [Steve Henson]
895
Richard Levitte6d7cce42000-05-18 21:25:48 +0000896 *) Add a document (doc/standards.txt) that list all kinds of standards
897 and so on that are implemented in OpenSSL.
898 [Richard Levitte]
899
Dr. Stephen Henson439df502000-05-18 00:33:00 +0000900 *) Enhance c_rehash script. Old version would mishandle certificates
901 with the same subject name hash and wouldn't handle CRLs at all.
902 Added -fingerprint option to crl utility, to support new c_rehash
903 features.
904 [Steve Henson]
905
Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000906 *) Eliminate non-ANSI declarations in crypto.h and stack.h.
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000907 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möller0e1c0612000-05-15 22:54:43 +0000908
Dr. Stephen Henson0cb957a2000-05-04 23:03:49 +0000909 *) Fix for SSL server purpose checking. Server checking was
910 rejecting certificates which had extended key usage present
911 but no ssl client purpose.
912 [Steve Henson, reported by Rene Grosser <grosser@hisolutions.com>]
913
Dr. Stephen Hensona331a302000-05-04 00:08:35 +0000914 *) Make PKCS#12 code work with no password. The PKCS#12 spec
915 is a little unclear about how a blank password is handled.
916 Since the password in encoded as a BMPString with terminating
917 double NULL a zero length password would end up as just the
918 double NULL. However no password at all is different and is
919 handled differently in the PKCS#12 key generation code. NS
920 treats a blank password as zero length. MSIE treats it as no
921 password on export: but it will try both on import. We now do
922 the same: PKCS12_parse() tries zero length and no password if
923 the password is set to "" or NULL (NULL is now a valid password:
924 it wasn't before) as does the pkcs12 application.
925 [Steve Henson]
926
Bodo Möller316e6a62000-05-02 20:29:03 +0000927 *) Bugfixes in apps/x509.c: Avoid a memory leak; and don't use
928 perror when PEM_read_bio_X509_REQ fails, the error message must
929 be obtained from the error queue.
930 [Bodo Moeller]
931
Bodo Möllerdcba2532000-04-29 23:58:05 +0000932 *) Avoid 'thread_hash' memory leak in crypto/err/err.c by freeing
933 it in ERR_remove_state if appropriate, and change ERR_get_state
934 accordingly to avoid race conditions (this is necessary because
935 thread_hash is no longer constant once set).
936 [Bodo Moeller]
937
Ulf Möller39736282000-04-27 15:06:26 +0000938 *) Bugfix for linux-elf makefile.one.
939 [Ulf Möller]
940
Geoff Thorpedeb4d502000-04-20 06:44:18 +0000941 *) RSA_get_default_method() will now cause a default
942 RSA_METHOD to be chosen if one doesn't exist already.
943 Previously this was only set during a call to RSA_new()
944 or RSA_new_method(NULL) meaning it was possible for
945 RSA_get_default_method() to return NULL.
946 [Geoff Thorpe]
947
Geoff Thorpeb9e63912000-04-19 21:45:17 +0000948 *) Added native name translation to the existing DSO code
949 that will convert (if the flag to do so is set) filenames
950 that are sufficiently small and have no path information
951 into a canonical native form. Eg. "blah" converted to
952 "libblah.so" or "blah.dll" etc.
953 [Geoff Thorpe]
954
Bodo Möllere5c84d52000-04-14 23:36:15 +0000955 *) New function ERR_error_string_n(e, buf, len) which is like
956 ERR_error_string(e, buf), but writes at most 'len' bytes
957 including the 0 terminator. For ERR_error_string_n, 'buf'
958 may not be NULL.
959 [Damien Miller <djm@mindrot.org>, Bodo Moeller]
960
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000961 *) CONF library reworked to become more general. A new CONF
962 configuration file reader "class" is implemented as well as a
963 new functions (NCONF_*, for "New CONF") to handle it. The now
964 old CONF_* functions are still there, but are reimplemented to
965 work in terms of the new functions. Also, a set of functions
966 to handle the internal storage of the configuration data is
967 provided to make it easier to write new configuration file
968 reader "classes" (I can definitely see something reading a
969 configuration file in XML format, for example), called _CONF_*,
970 or "the configuration storage API"...
971
972 The new configuration file reading functions are:
973
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000974 NCONF_new, NCONF_free, NCONF_load, NCONF_load_fp, NCONF_load_bio,
975 NCONF_get_section, NCONF_get_string, NCONF_get_numbre
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000976
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000977 NCONF_default, NCONF_WIN32
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000978
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +0000979 NCONF_dump_fp, NCONF_dump_bio
Richard Levittea9831302000-04-10 15:48:16 +0000980
981 NCONF_default and NCONF_WIN32 are method (or "class") choosers,
982 NCONF_new creates a new CONF object. This works in the same way
983 as other interfaces in OpenSSL, like the BIO interface.
984 NCONF_dump_* dump the internal storage of the configuration file,
985 which is useful for debugging. All other functions take the same
986 arguments as the old CONF_* functions wth the exception of the
987 first that must be a `CONF *' instead of a `LHASH *'.
988
989 To make it easer to use the new classes with the old CONF_* functions,
990 the function CONF_set_default_method is provided.
991 [Richard Levitte]
992
Bodo Möller1d90f282000-04-06 22:33:14 +0000993 *) Add '-tls1' option to 'openssl ciphers', which was already
994 mentioned in the documentation but had not been implemented.
995 (This option is not yet really useful because even the additional
996 experimental TLS 1.0 ciphers are currently treated as SSL 3.0 ciphers.)
997 [Bodo Moeller]
998
Geoff Thorpe6ef4d9d2000-04-04 22:49:27 +0000999 *) Initial DSO code added into libcrypto for letting OpenSSL (and

1005
1006 *) Make sure _lrotl and _lrotr are only used with MSVC.
Bodo Möller865874f2000-02-28 18:03:16 +00001007
Bodo Möllercf194c12000-03-30 08:12:35 +00001008 *) Use lock CRYPTO_LOCK_RAND correctly in ssleay_rand_status
1009 (the default implementation of RAND_status).
1010
Bodo Möller3bc90f22000-03-27 18:10:08 +00001011 *) Rename openssl x509 option '-crlext', which was added in 0.9.5,
1012 to '-clrext' (= clear extensions), as intended and documented.
1013 [Bodo Moeller; inconsistency pointed out by Michael Attili
1014 <attili@amaxo.com>]
1015
Dr. Stephen Hensonb475baf2000-03-27 00:53:27 +00001016 *) Fix for HMAC. It wasn't zeroing the rest of the block if the key length
1017 was larger than the MD block size.
1018 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Yost William <YostW@tce.com>]
1019
Dr. Stephen Hensone77066e2000-03-22 13:50:23 +00001020 *) Modernise PKCS12_parse() so it uses STACK_OF(X509) for its ca argument
1021 fix a leak when the ca argument was passed as NULL. Stop X509_PUBKEY_set()
1022 using the passed key: if the passed key was a private key the result

1025 [Steve Henson]
1026
Ulf Möller7af48162000-03-19 02:06:37 +00001027 *) des_quad_cksum() byte order bug fix.

1030
Dr. Stephen Henson80870562000-03-14 03:29:57 +00001031 *) Fix so V_ASN1_APP_CHOOSE works again: however its use is strongly

1033 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Brian Korver <briank@cs.stanford.edu>]
1034
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +00001035 *) For easily testing in shell scripts whether some command
1036 'openssl XXX' exists, the new pseudo-command 'openssl no-XXX'
Bodo Möllerdf1ff3f2000-03-13 21:01:05 +00001037 returns with exit code 0 iff no command of the given name is available.
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +00001038 'no-XXX' is printed in this case, 'XXX' otherwise. In both cases,
Bodo Möller46c46472000-03-13 20:31:46 +00001039 the output goes to stdout and nothing is printed to stderr.
1040 Additional arguments are always ignored.
1041
1042 Since for each cipher there is a command of the same name,
1043 the 'no-cipher' compilation switches can be tested this way.
Bodo Möller7694ddc2000-03-13 20:48:23 +00001044
1045 ('openssl no-XXX' is not able to detect pseudo-commands such

1048
Bodo Möller65b002f2000-03-13 19:24:39 +00001049 *) Update test suite so that 'make test' succeeds in 'no-rsa' configuration.
1050 [Bodo Moeller]
1051
Bodo Möllere11f0de2000-03-13 17:07:04 +00001052 *) For SSL_[CTX_]set_tmp_dh, don't create a DH key if SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE
1053 is set; it will be thrown away anyway because each handshake creates
1054 its own key.
1055 ssl_cert_dup, which is used by SSL_new, now copies DH keys in addition
1056 to parameters -- in previous versions (since OpenSSL 0.9.3) the
1057 'default key' from SSL_CTX_set_tmp_dh would always be lost, meanining
1058 you effectivly got SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE when using this macro.
1059 [Bodo Moeller]
1060
Bodo Möller2d5e4492000-03-10 13:49:02 +00001061 *) New s_client option -ign_eof: EOF at stdin is ignored, and
1062 'Q' and 'R' lose their special meanings (quit/renegotiate).
1063 This is part of what -quiet does; unlike -quiet, -ign_eof
1064 does not suppress any output.
1065 [Richard Levitte]
1066
Bodo Möllerdaf4e532000-03-07 15:10:08 +00001067 *) Add compatibility options to the purpose and trust code. The
Dr. Stephen Henson068fdce2000-03-07 14:04:29 +00001068 purpose X509_PURPOSE_ANY is "any purpose" which automatically
1069 accepts a certificate or CA, this was the previous behaviour,
1070 with all the associated security issues.
1071
1072 X509_TRUST_COMPAT is the old trust behaviour: only and
1073 automatically trust self signed roots in certificate store. A
1074 new trust setting X509_TRUST_DEFAULT is used to specify that
1075 a purpose has no associated trust setting and it should instead
1076 use the value in the default purpose.
1077 [Steve Henson]
1078
Dr. Stephen Henson48fe0ee2000-03-07 01:03:33 +00001079 *) Fix the PKCS#8 DSA private key code so it decodes keys again
1080 and fix a memory leak.
1081 [Steve Henson]
1082
Bodo Möller59fc2b02000-03-05 00:19:36 +00001083 *) In util/mkerr.pl (which implements 'make errors'), preserve
1084 reason strings from the previous version of the .c file, as
1085 the default to have only downcase letters (and digits) in
1086 automatically generated reasons codes is not always appropriate.
1087 [Bodo Moeller]
1088
Bodo Möller0a150c52000-03-04 01:36:53 +00001089 *) In ERR_load_ERR_strings(), build an ERR_LIB_SYS error reason table
1090 using strerror. Previously, ERR_reason_error_string() returned
1091 library names as reason strings for SYSerr; but SYSerr is a special
1092 case where small numbers are errno values, not library numbers.
1093 [Bodo Moeller]
1094
Bodo Möller41918452000-03-03 22:18:19 +00001095 *) Add '-dsaparam' option to 'openssl dhparam' application. This
1096 converts DSA parameters into DH parameters. (When creating parameters,
1097 DSA_generate_parameters is used.)
1098 [Bodo Moeller]
1099
1100 *) Include 'length' (recommended exponent length) in C code generated
1101 by 'openssl dhparam -C'.
1102 [Bodo Moeller]
1103
Dr. Stephen Hensond9c88a32000-03-03 00:06:40 +00001104 *) The second argument to set_label in perlasm was already being used
1105 so couldn't be used as a "file scope" flag. Moved to third argument
1106 which was free.
1107 [Steve Henson]
1108
Bodo Möller84d14402000-03-02 22:44:55 +00001109 *) In PEM_ASN1_write_bio and some other functions, use RAND_pseudo_bytes
1110 instead of RAND_bytes for encryption IVs and salts.
1111 [Bodo Moeller]
1112
Bodo Möller5eb8ca42000-03-02 14:34:58 +00001113 *) Include RAND_status() into RAND_METHOD instead of implementing
1114 it only for md_rand.c Otherwise replacing the PRNG by calling
1115 RAND_set_rand_method would be impossible.
1116 [Bodo Moeller]
1117
Ulf Möller7a2dfc22000-03-01 19:07:58 +00001118 *) Don't let DSA_generate_key() enter an infinite loop if the random
1119 number generation fails.
1120 [Bodo Moeller]
1121
Bodo Möller55f7d652000-03-01 07:57:25 +00001122 *) New 'rand' application for creating pseudo-random output.
1123 [Bodo Moeller]
1124
Ralf S. Engelschall010712f2000-02-29 15:29:02 +00001125 *) Added configuration support for Linux/IA64
1126 [Rolf Haberrecker <rolf@suse.de>]
1127
Ulf Möller2da0c112000-02-28 19:16:41 +00001128 *) Assembler module support for Mingw32.
1129 [Ulf Möller]
1130
Ulf Möllera4709b32000-02-28 19:14:46 +00001131 *) Shared library support for HPUX (in shlib/).
1132 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE> and Anonymous]
1133
1134 *) Shared library support for Solaris gcc.
1135 [Lutz Behnke <behnke@trustcenter.de>]
Bodo Möller865874f2000-02-28 18:03:16 +00001136
Richard Levitte74cdf6f2000-02-28 11:59:02 +00001137 Changes between 0.9.4 and 0.9.5 [28 Feb 2000]
Ulf Möller38e33ce2000-01-27 19:31:26 +00001138
Dr. Stephen Henson82b93182000-02-28 14:11:19 +00001139 *) PKCS7_encrypt() was adding text MIME headers twice because they
1140 were added manually and by SMIME_crlf_copy().
1141 [Steve Henson]
1142
Dr. Stephen Henson587bb0e2000-02-27 17:34:30 +00001143 *) In bntest.c don't call BN_rand with zero bits argument.
1144 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Andrew W. Gray <agray@iconsinc.com>]
1145
Ulf Möller688938f2000-02-27 02:05:39 +00001146 *) BN_mul bugfix: In bn_mul_part_recursion() only the a>a[n] && b>b[n]
Andy Polyakova5770be2000-02-27 02:34:37 +00001147 case was implemented. This caused BN_div_recp() to fail occasionally.
Ulf Möller688938f2000-02-27 02:05:39 +00001148 [Ulf Möller]
1149
Dr. Stephen Henson94de0412000-02-27 01:15:25 +00001150 *) Add an optional second argument to the set_label() in the perl
1151 assembly language builder. If this argument exists and is set
1152 to 1 it signals that the assembler should use a symbol whose
1153 scope is the entire file, not just the current function. This
1154 is needed with MASM which uses the format label:: for this scope.
1155 [Steve Henson, pointed out by Peter Runestig <peter@runestig.com>]
1156
Dr. Stephen Henson02021972000-02-26 19:25:31 +00001157 *) Change the ASN1 types so they are typedefs by default. Before
1158 almost all types were #define'd to ASN1_STRING which was causing
1159 STACK_OF() problems: you couldn't declare STACK_OF(ASN1_UTF8STRING)
1160 for example.
1161 [Steve Henson]
1162
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001163 *) Change names of new functions to the new get1/get0 naming
1164 convention: After 'get1', the caller owns a reference count
1165 and has to call ..._free; 'get0' returns a pointer to some
1166 data structure without incrementing reference counters.
1167 (Some of the existing 'get' functions increment a reference
1168 counter, some don't.)
1169 Similarly, 'set1' and 'add1' functions increase reference
1170 counters or duplicate objects.
Dr. Stephen Hensonc7cb16a2000-02-26 01:55:33 +00001171 [Steve Henson]
1172
Dr. Stephen Hensonfbb41ae2000-02-25 00:23:48 +00001173 *) Allow for the possibility of temp RSA key generation failure:
1174 the code used to assume it always worked and crashed on failure.
1175 [Steve Henson]
1176
Ulf Möller505b5a02000-02-24 22:57:42 +00001177 *) Fix potential buffer overrun problem in BIO_printf().
1178 [Ulf Möller, using public domain code by Patrick Powell; problem
1179 pointed out by David Sacerdote <das33@cornell.edu>]
1180
Ulf Möller4ec2d4d2000-02-24 02:51:47 +00001181 *) Support EGD <http://www.lothar.com/tech/crypto/>. New functions
1182 RAND_egd() and RAND_status(). In the command line application,
1183 the EGD socket can be specified like a seed file using RANDFILE
1184 or -rand.
1185 [Ulf Möller]
1186
Dr. Stephen Henson3142c862000-02-23 01:11:01 +00001187 *) Allow the string CERTIFICATE to be tolerated in PKCS#7 structures.
1188 Some CAs (e.g. Verisign) distribute certificates in this form.
1189 [Steve Henson]
1190
1191 *) Remove the SSL_ALLOW_ADH compile option and set the default cipher
1192 list to exclude them. This means that no special compilation option
1193 is needed to use anonymous DH: it just needs to be included in the
1194 cipher list.
1195 [Steve Henson]
1196
Dr. Stephen Henson72b60352000-02-22 02:59:26 +00001197 *) Change the EVP_MD_CTX_type macro so its meaning consistent with
1198 EVP_MD_type. The old functionality is available in a new macro called
1199 EVP_MD_md(). Change code that uses it and update docs.
1200 [Steve Henson]
1201
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +00001202 *) ..._ctrl functions now have corresponding ..._callback_ctrl functions
1203 where the 'void *' argument is replaced by a function pointer argument.
1204 Previously 'void *' was abused to point to functions, which works on
1205 many platforms, but is not correct. As these functions are usually
1206 called by macros defined in OpenSSL header files, most source code
1207 should work without changes.
Ulf Möllercdf20e02000-02-23 21:57:22 +00001208 [Richard Levitte]
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +00001209
1210 *) <openssl/opensslconf.h> (which is created by Configure) now contains
1211 sections with information on -D... compiler switches used for
1212 compiling the library so that applications can see them. To enable
1213 one of these sections, a pre-processor symbol OPENSSL_..._DEFINES
1214 must be defined. E.g.,
1215 #define OPENSSL_ALGORITHM_DEFINES
1216 #include <openssl/opensslconf.h>
1217 defines all pertinent NO_<algo> symbols, such as NO_IDEA, NO_RSA, etc.

Bodo Möllerb35e9052000-02-20 23:04:06 +00001220 *) Bugfix: Tolerate fragmentation and interleaving in the SSL 3/TLS
1221 record layer.
1222 [Bodo Moeller]
1223
Dr. Stephen Hensond754b382000-02-20 18:27:23 +00001224 *) Change the 'other' type in certificate aux info to a STACK_OF
1225 X509_ALGOR. Although not an AlgorithmIdentifier as such it has
1226 the required ASN1 format: arbitrary types determined by an OID.
1227 [Steve Henson]
1228
Dr. Stephen Henson8a208cb2000-02-18 00:54:21 +00001229 *) Add some PEM_write_X509_REQ_NEW() functions and a command line
1230 argument to 'req'. This is not because the function is newer or
1231 better than others it just uses the work 'NEW' in the certificate
1232 request header lines. Some software needs this.
1233 [Steve Henson]
1234
Dr. Stephen Hensona3fe3822000-02-16 23:16:01 +00001235 *) Reorganise password command line arguments: now passwords can be
1236 obtained from various sources. Delete the PEM_cb function and make
1237 it the default behaviour: i.e. if the callback is NULL and the
1238 usrdata argument is not NULL interpret it as a null terminated pass
1239 phrase. If usrdata and the callback are NULL then the pass phrase
1240 is prompted for as usual.
1241 [Steve Henson]
1242
Ben Lauriebd03b992000-02-16 22:15:39 +00001243 *) Add support for the Compaq Atalla crypto accelerator. If it is installed,
1244 the support is automatically enabled. The resulting binaries will
1245 autodetect the card and use it if present.
1246 [Ben Laurie and Compaq Inc.]
1247
Dr. Stephen Hensonde469ef2000-02-15 14:19:44 +00001248 *) Work around for Netscape hang bug. This sends certificate request
1249 and server done in one record. Since this is perfectly legal in the
1250 SSL/TLS protocol it isn't a "bug" option and is on by default. See
1251 the bugs/SSLv3 entry for more info.
1252 [Steve Henson]
1253
Andy Polyakovbcba6cc2000-02-12 23:33:01 +00001254 *) HP-UX tune-up: new unified configs, HP C compiler bug workaround.
1255 [Andy Polyakov]
1256
Dr. Stephen Hensond13e4eb2000-02-12 03:03:04 +00001257 *) Add -rand argument to smime and pkcs12 applications and read/write
1258 of seed file.
1259 [Steve Henson]
1260
Bodo Möller3ebf0be2000-02-11 17:18:50 +00001261 *) New 'passwd' tool for crypt(3) and apr1 password hashes.
Bodo Möllerbb325c72000-02-10 21:50:52 +00001262 [Bodo Moeller]
1263
Dr. Stephen Hensonf07fb9b2000-02-08 01:34:59 +00001264 *) Add command line password options to the remaining applications.
1265 [Steve Henson]
1266
Ulf Möllercae55bf2000-02-06 15:56:59 +00001267 *) Bug fix for BN_div_recp() for numerators with an even number of
1268 bits.
1269 [Ulf Möller]
1270
1271 *) More tests in bntest.c, and changed test_bn output.
1272 [Ulf Möller]
1273
Andy Polyakov0fad6cb2000-02-06 11:15:20 +00001274 *) ./config recognizes MacOS X now.
1275 [Andy Polyakov]
1276
Ulf Möller4a6222d2000-02-06 00:25:39 +00001277 *) Bug fix for BN_div() when the first words of num and divsor are
1278 equal (it gave wrong results if (rem=(n1-q*d0)&BN_MASK2) < d0).
1279 [Ulf Möller]
1280
Dr. Stephen Henson66430202000-02-05 21:07:56 +00001281 *) Add support for various broken PKCS#8 formats, and command line
1282 options to produce them.
1283 [Steve Henson]
1284
Ulf Möller9b141122000-02-05 14:17:32 +00001285 *) New functions BN_CTX_start(), BN_CTX_get() and BT_CTX_end() to
1286 get temporary BIGNUMs from a BN_CTX.
1287 [Ulf Möller]
1288
1289 *) Correct return values in BN_mod_exp_mont() and BN_mod_exp2_mont()
1290 for p == 0.
1291 [Ulf Möller]
1292
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf57d842000-02-04 14:01:38 +00001293 *) Change the SSLeay_add_all_*() functions to OpenSSL_add_all_*() and
1294 include a #define from the old name to the new. The original intent
1295 was that statically linked binaries could for example just call
1296 SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() to just add ciphers to the table and not
1297 link with digests. This never worked becayse SSLeay_add_all_digests()
1298 and SSLeay_add_all_ciphers() were in the same source file so calling
1299 one would link with the other. They are now in separate source files.
1300 [Steve Henson]
1301
Dr. Stephen Henson82fc1d92000-02-03 02:56:48 +00001302 *) Add a new -notext option to 'ca' and a -pubkey option to 'spkac'.
1303 [Steve Henson]
1304
Bodo Möllere74231e2000-02-02 21:20:44 +00001305 *) Use a less unusual form of the Miller-Rabin primality test (it used
1306 a binary algorithm for exponentiation integrated into the Miller-Rabin
1307 loop, our standard modexp algorithms are faster).
1308 [Bodo Moeller]
1309
Bodo Möller2c5fe5b2000-02-01 07:50:42 +00001310 *) Support for the EBCDIC character set completed.
Ulf Möller8efb6012000-02-01 02:21:16 +00001311 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@Mch.SNI.De>]
1312
Ulf Möller98d0b2e2000-01-30 23:34:33 +00001313 *) Source code cleanups: use const where appropriate, eliminate casts,
1314 use void * instead of char * in lhash.
1315 [Ulf Möller]
1316
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001317 *) Bugfix: ssl3_send_server_key_exchange was not restartable
1318 (the state was not changed to SSL3_ST_SW_KEY_EXCH_B, and because of
1319 this the server could overwrite ephemeral keys that the client
1320 has already seen).
1321 [Bodo Moeller]
1322
1323 *) Turn DSA_is_prime into a macro that calls BN_is_prime,
1324 using 50 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test.
1325
1326 DSA_generate_parameters now uses BN_is_prime_fasttest (with 50
1327 iterations of the Rabin-Miller test as required by the appendix
1328 to FIPS PUB 186[-1]) instead of DSA_is_prime.
1329 As BN_is_prime_fasttest includes trial division, DSA parameter
1330 generation becomes much faster.
1331
1332 This implies a change for the callback functions in DSA_is_prime
Bodo Möllercdd43b52000-01-30 11:05:39 +00001333 and DSA_generate_parameters: The callback function is called once
1334 for each positive witness in the Rabin-Miller test, not just
1335 occasionally in the inner loop; and the parameters to the
1336 callback function now provide an iteration count for the outer
1337 loop rather than for the current invocation of the inner loop.
1338 DSA_generate_parameters additionally can call the callback
1339 function with an 'iteration count' of -1, meaning that a
1340 candidate has passed the trial division test (when q is generated
1341 from an application-provided seed, trial division is skipped).
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001342 [Bodo Moeller]
1343
Bodo Möller7865b872000-01-30 02:40:38 +00001344 *) New function BN_is_prime_fasttest that optionally does trial
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001345 division before starting the Rabin-Miller test and has
1346 an additional BN_CTX * argument (whereas BN_is_prime always
1347 has to allocate at least one BN_CTX).
Bodo Möller1baa9492000-01-30 03:32:28 +00001348 'callback(1, -1, cb_arg)' is called when a number has passed the
1349 trial division stage.
1350 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001351
Dr. Stephen Hensone1314b52000-01-29 00:00:26 +00001352 *) Fix for bug in CRL encoding. The validity dates weren't being handled
1353 as ASN1_TIME.
1354 [Steve Henson]
1355
Dr. Stephen Henson90644dd2000-01-28 01:35:31 +00001356 *) New -pkcs12 option to CA.pl script to write out a PKCS#12 file.
1357 [Steve Henson]
1358
Ulf Möller38e33ce2000-01-27 19:31:26 +00001359 *) New function BN_pseudo_rand().
1360 [Ulf Möller]
Ralf S. Engelschalld91e2011999-08-09 11:14:08 +00001361
Ulf Möllere93f9a32000-01-27 01:50:42 +00001362 *) Clean up BN_mod_mul_montgomery(): replace the broken (and unreadable)
1363 bignum version of BN_from_montgomery() with the working code from
1364 SSLeay 0.9.0 (the word based version is faster anyway), and clean up
1365 the comments.
1366 [Ulf Möller]
1367
Bodo Möller2557eae2000-01-24 17:57:56 +00001368 *) Avoid a race condition in s2_clnt.c (function get_server_hello) that
1369 made it impossible to use the same SSL_SESSION data structure in
1370 SSL2 clients in multiple threads.
1371 [Bodo Moeller]
1372
Bodo Möllera46faa22000-01-24 16:02:29 +00001373 *) The return value of RAND_load_file() no longer counts bytes obtained
1374 by stat(). RAND_load_file(..., -1) is new and uses the complete file
1375 to seed the PRNG (previously an explicit byte count was required).
1376 [Ulf Möller, Bodo Möller]
Bodo Mölleraabbb742000-01-24 14:42:26 +00001377
Dr. Stephen Hensondd9d2332000-01-23 23:41:49 +00001378 *) Clean up CRYPTO_EX_DATA functions, some of these didn't have prototypes
1379 used (char *) instead of (void *) and had casts all over the place.
1380 [Steve Henson]
1381
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001382 *) Make BN_generate_prime() return NULL on error if ret!=NULL.
1383 [Ulf Möller]
1384
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001385 *) Retain source code compatibility for BN_prime_checks macro:
1386 BN_is_prime(..., BN_prime_checks, ...) now uses
1387 BN_prime_checks_for_size to determine the appropriate number of
1388 Rabin-Miller iterations.
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001389 [Ulf Möller]
1390
1391 *) Diffie-Hellman uses "safe" primes: DH_check() return code renamed to
1392 DH_CHECK_P_NOT_SAFE_PRIME.
1393 (Check if this is true? OpenPGP calls them "strong".)
1394 [Ulf Möller]
1395
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +00001396 *) Merge the functionality of "dh" and "gendh" programs into a new program
1397 "dhparam". The old programs are retained for now but will handle DH keys
1398 (instead of parameters) in future.
1399 [Steve Henson]
1400
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +00001401 *) Make the ciphers, s_server and s_client programs check the return values
1402 when a new cipher list is set.
1403 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson018e57c2000-01-22 03:17:06 +00001404
Dr. Stephen Hensonfabce042000-01-23 02:28:08 +00001405 *) Enhance the SSL/TLS cipher mechanism to correctly handle the TLS 56bit
1406 ciphers. Before when the 56bit ciphers were enabled the sorting was
1407 wrong.
1408
1409 The syntax for the cipher sorting has been extended to support sorting by
1410 cipher-strength (using the strength_bits hard coded in the tables).
1411 The new command is "@STRENGTH" (see also doc/apps/ciphers.pod).
1412
1413 Fix a bug in the cipher-command parser: when supplying a cipher command
1414 string with an "undefined" symbol (neither command nor alphanumeric
1415 [A-Za-z0-9], ssl_set_cipher_list used to hang in an endless loop. Now
1416 an error is flagged.
1417
1418 Due to the strength-sorting extension, the code of the
1419 ssl_create_cipher_list() function was completely rearranged. I hope that
1420 the readability was also increased :-)
1421 [Lutz Jaenicke <Lutz.Jaenicke@aet.TU-Cottbus.DE>]
Dr. Stephen Henson09483c52000-01-22 13:58:29 +00001422
Dr. Stephen Henson81004902000-01-21 02:42:14 +00001423 *) Minor change to 'x509' utility. The -CAcreateserial option now uses 1
1424 for the first serial number and places 2 in the serial number file. This
1425 avoids problems when the root CA is created with serial number zero and
1426 the first user certificate has the same issuer name and serial number
1427 as the root CA.
1428 [Steve Henson]
1429
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +00001430 *) Fixes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities, change the 'req' program so it uses
1431 the new code. Add documentation for this stuff.
1432 [Steve Henson]
1433
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +00001434 *) Changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE utilities. These have been renamed from
1435 X509_*() to X509at_*() on the grounds that they don't handle X509
1436 structures and behave in an analagous way to the X509v3 functions:
1437 they shouldn't be called directly but wrapper functions should be used
1438 instead.
1439
1440 So we also now have some wrapper functions that call the X509at functions
1441 when passed certificate requests. (TO DO: similar things can be done with
1442 PKCS#7 signed and unsigned attributes, PKCS#12 attributes and a few other
1443 things. Some of these need some d2i or i2d and print functionality
Dr. Stephen Henson6e6bc352000-01-20 01:37:17 +00001444 because they handle more complex structures.)
Dr. Stephen Henson77b47b92000-01-19 01:02:13 +00001445 [Steve Henson]
1446
Ulf Mölleraa82db42000-01-16 21:10:00 +00001447 *) Add missing #ifndefs that caused missing symbols when building libssl
1448 as a shared library without RSA. Use #ifndef NO_SSL2 instead of
1449 NO_RSA in ssl/s2*.c.
1450 [Kris Kennaway <kris@hub.freebsd.org>, modified by Ulf Möller]
1451
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +00001452 *) Precautions against using the PRNG uninitialized: RAND_bytes() now
Bodo Möller09837602000-01-13 21:20:26 +00001453 has a return value which indicates the quality of the random data
1454 (1 = ok, 0 = not seeded). Also an error is recorded on the thread's
Ulf Möller373b5752000-01-16 15:58:17 +00001455 error queue. New function RAND_pseudo_bytes() generates output that is
Bodo Möller853f7572000-02-19 15:22:53 +00001456 guaranteed to be unique but not unpredictable. RAND_add is like
1457 RAND_seed, but takes an extra argument for an entropy estimate
1458 (RAND_seed always assumes full entropy).
Ulf Möllereb952082000-01-13 20:59:17 +00001459 [Ulf Möller]
1460
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +00001461 *) Do more iterations of Rabin-Miller probable prime test (specifically,
1462 3 for 1024-bit primes, 6 for 512-bit primes, 12 for 256-bit primes
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001463 instead of only 2 for all lengths; see BN_prime_checks_for_size definition
Ulf Möller4486d0c2000-01-22 20:05:23 +00001464 in crypto/bn/bn_prime.c for the complete table). This guarantees a
Bodo Möllera87030a2000-01-30 02:23:03 +00001465 false-positive rate of at most 2^-80 for random input.
Bodo Möller76aa0dd2000-01-12 11:57:30 +00001466 [Bodo Moeller]
1467
Bodo Möller3cc6cde2000-01-11 08:09:27 +00001468 *) Rewrite ssl3_read_n (ssl/s3_pkt.c) avoiding a couple of bugs.
Bodo Möllerc51ae172000-01-11 01:07:26 +00001469 [Bodo Moeller]
1470
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001471 *) New function X509_CTX_rget_chain() (renamed to X509_CTX_get1_chain
1472 in the 0.9.5 release), this returns the chain
Dr. Stephen Henson25f923d2000-01-09 14:21:40 +00001473 from an X509_CTX structure with a dup of the stack and all
1474 the X509 reference counts upped: so the stack will exist
1475 after X509_CTX_cleanup() has been called. Modify pkcs12.c
1476 to use this.
1477
1478 Also make SSL_SESSION_print() print out the verify return
1479 code.
1480 [Steve Henson]
1481
Dr. Stephen Hensondad666f2000-01-08 03:16:04 +00001482 *) Add manpage for the pkcs12 command. Also change the default
1483 behaviour so MAC iteration counts are used unless the new
1484 -nomaciter option is used. This improves file security and
1485 only older versions of MSIE (4.0 for example) need it.
1486 [Steve Henson]
1487
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001488 *) Honor the no-xxx Configure options when creating .DEF files.
1489 [Ulf Möller]
1490
Dr. Stephen Henson35f48502000-01-07 00:55:54 +00001491 *) Add PKCS#10 attributes to field table: challengePassword,
1492 unstructuredName and unstructuredAddress. These are taken from
1493 draft PKCS#9 v2.0 but are compatible with v1.2 provided no
1494 international characters are used.
1495
1496 More changes to X509_ATTRIBUTE code: allow the setting of types
1497 based on strings. Remove the 'loc' parameter when adding
1498 attributes because these will be a SET OF encoding which is sorted
1499 in ASN1 order.
1500 [Steve Henson]
1501
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001502 *) Initial changes to the 'req' utility to allow request generation
1503 automation. This will allow an application to just generate a template
1504 file containing all the field values and have req construct the
1505 request.
1506
1507 Initial support for X509_ATTRIBUTE handling. Stacks of these are
1508 used all over the place including certificate requests and PKCS#7
1509 structures. They are currently handled manually where necessary with
1510 some primitive wrappers for PKCS#7. The new functions behave in a
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001511 manner analogous to the X509 extension functions: they allow
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001512 attributes to be looked up by NID and added.
1513
1514 Later something similar to the X509V3 code would be desirable to
1515 automatically handle the encoding, decoding and printing of the
1516 more complex types. The string types like challengePassword can
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001517 be handled by the string table functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensonb38f9f62000-01-06 01:26:48 +00001518
1519 Also modified the multi byte string table handling. Now there is
1520 a 'global mask' which masks out certain types. The table itself
1521 can use the flag STABLE_NO_MASK to ignore the mask setting: this
1522 is useful when for example there is only one permissible type
1523 (as in countryName) and using the mask might result in no valid
1524 types at all.
1525 [Steve Henson]
1526
Bodo Möllerca031092000-01-06 01:19:17 +00001527 *) Clean up 'Finished' handling, and add functions SSL_get_finished and
1528 SSL_get_peer_finished to allow applications to obtain the latest
1529 Finished messages sent to the peer or expected from the peer,
1530 respectively. (SSL_get_peer_finished is usually the Finished message
1531 actually received from the peer, otherwise the protocol will be aborted.)
1532
1533 As the Finished message are message digests of the complete handshake
1534 (with a total of 192 bits for TLS 1.0 and more for SSL 3.0), they can
1535 be used for external authentication procedures when the authentication
1536 provided by SSL/TLS is not desired or is not enough.
Bodo Möllerf2d9a322000-01-06 00:24:24 +00001537 [Bodo Moeller]
1538
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +00001539 *) Enhanced support for Alpha Linux is added. Now ./config checks if
1540 the host supports BWX extension and if Compaq C is present on the
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001541 $PATH. Just exploiting of the BWX extension results in 20-30%
Andy Polyakovbdf5e182000-01-02 20:46:58 +00001542 performance kick for some algorithms, e.g. DES and RC4 to mention
1543 a couple. Compaq C in turn generates ~20% faster code for MD5 and
1544 SHA1.
1545 [Andy Polyakov]
1546
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +00001547 *) Add support for MS "fast SGC". This is arguably a violation of the
1548 SSL3/TLS protocol. Netscape SGC does two handshakes: the first with
1549 weak crypto and after checking the certificate is SGC a second one
1550 with strong crypto. MS SGC stops the first handshake after receiving
1551 the server certificate message and sends a second client hello. Since
1552 a server will typically do all the time consuming operations before
1553 expecting any further messages from the client (server key exchange
1554 is the most expensive) there is little difference between the two.
1555
1556 To get OpenSSL to support MS SGC we have to permit a second client
1557 hello message after we have sent server done. In addition we have to
Bodo Möller745c70e2000-02-21 10:16:30 +00001558 reset the MAC if we do get this second client hello.
Dr. Stephen Henson3d14b9d2000-01-02 18:52:58 +00001559 [Steve Henson]
1560
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +00001561 *) Add a function 'd2i_AutoPrivateKey()' this will automatically decide
1562 if a DER encoded private key is RSA or DSA traditional format. Changed
1563 d2i_PrivateKey_bio() to use it. This is only needed for the "traditional"
1564 format DER encoded private key. Newer code should use PKCS#8 format which
1565 has the key type encoded in the ASN1 structure. Added DER private key
1566 support to pkcs8 application.
1567 [Steve Henson]
1568
Bodo Möller47134b71999-12-29 17:43:03 +00001569 *) SSL 3/TLS 1 servers now don't request certificates when an anonymous
1570 ciphersuites has been selected (as required by the SSL 3/TLS 1
1571 specifications). Exception: When SSL_VERIFY_FAIL_IF_NO_PEER_CERT
1572 is set, we interpret this as a request to violate the specification
1573 (the worst that can happen is a handshake failure, and 'correct'
1574 behaviour would result in a handshake failure anyway).
1575 [Bodo Moeller]
1576
Bodo Möller45fd4db1999-12-29 14:29:32 +00001577 *) In SSL_CTX_add_session, take into account that there might be multiple
1578 SSL_SESSION structures with the same session ID (e.g. when two threads
1579 concurrently obtain them from an external cache).
1580 The internal cache can handle only one SSL_SESSION with a given ID,
1581 so if there's a conflict, we now throw out the old one to achieve
1582 consistency.
1583 [Bodo Moeller]
1584
Dr. Stephen Hensonf45f40f1999-12-29 02:59:18 +00001585 *) Add OIDs for idea and blowfish in CBC mode. This will allow both
1586 to be used in PKCS#5 v2.0 and S/MIME. Also add checking to
1587 some routines that use cipher OIDs: some ciphers do not have OIDs
1588 defined and so they cannot be used for S/MIME and PKCS#5 v2.0 for
1589 example.
1590 [Steve Henson]
1591
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +00001592 *) Simplify the trust setting structure and code. Now we just have
1593 two sequences of OIDs for trusted and rejected settings. These will
1594 typically have values the same as the extended key usage extension
1595 and any application specific purposes.
1596
1597 The trust checking code now has a default behaviour: it will just
1598 check for an object with the same NID as the passed id. Functions can
1599 be provided to override either the default behaviour or the behaviour
1600 for a given id. SSL client, server and email already have functions
Dr. Stephen Henson20432ea2000-01-01 16:42:49 +00001601 in place for compatibility: they check the NID and also return "trusted"
Dr. Stephen Henson6447cce1999-12-29 00:40:28 +00001602 if the certificate is self signed.
1603 [Steve Henson]
1604
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +00001605 *) Add d2i,i2d bio/fp functions for PrivateKey: these convert the
1606 traditional format into an EVP_PKEY structure.
1607 [Steve Henson]
1608
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +00001609 *) Add a password callback function PEM_cb() which either prompts for
1610 a password if usr_data is NULL or otherwise assumes it is a null
Dr. Stephen Hensone6f3c581999-12-26 19:20:03 +00001611 terminated password. Allow passwords to be passed on command line
Dr. Stephen Henson36217a91999-12-24 23:53:57 +00001612 environment or config files in a few more utilities.
1613 [Steve Henson]
1614
Dr. Stephen Henson525f51f1999-12-23 02:02:42 +00001615 *) Add a bunch of DER and PEM functions to handle PKCS#8 format private
1616 keys. Add some short names for PKCS#8 PBE algorithms and allow them
1617 to be specified on the command line for the pkcs8 and pkcs12 utilities.
1618 Update documentation.
1619 [Steve Henson]
1620
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +00001621 *) Support for ASN1 "NULL" type. This could be handled before by using
1622 ASN1_TYPE but there wasn't any function that would try to read a NULL
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001623 and produce an error if it couldn't. For compatibility we also have
Dr. Stephen Hensone76f9351999-12-22 01:39:23 +00001624 ASN1_NULL_new() and ASN1_NULL_free() functions but these are faked and
1625 don't allocate anything because they don't need to.
1626 [Steve Henson]
1627
Andy Polyakov099f1b31999-12-19 16:17:45 +00001628 *) Initial support for MacOS is now provided. Examine INSTALL.MacOS
1629 for details.
1630 [Andy Polyakov, Roy Woods <roy@centicsystems.ca>]
1631
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +00001632 *) Rebuild of the memory allocation routines used by OpenSSL code and
1633 possibly others as well. The purpose is to make an interface that
1634 provide hooks so anyone can build a separate set of allocation and
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001635 deallocation routines to be used by OpenSSL, for example memory
1636 pool implementations, or something else, which was previously hard
1637 since Malloc(), Realloc() and Free() were defined as macros having
Richard Levittede73e392000-01-11 22:32:37 +00001638 the values malloc, realloc and free, respectively (except for Win32
1639 compilations). The same is provided for memory debugging code.
1640 OpenSSL already comes with functionality to find memory leaks, but
1641 this gives people a chance to debug other memory problems.
Richard Levitted8df48a1999-12-18 01:14:39 +00001642
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001643 With these changes, a new set of functions and macros have appeared:
1644
Bodo Möller2c05c492000-05-25 09:50:40 +00001645 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() [F]
1646 CRYPTO_get_mem_debug_functions() [F]
1647 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options() [F]
1648 CRYPTO_dbg_get_options() [F]
1649 CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() [M]
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001650
1651 The memory debug functions are NULL by default, unless the library
1652 is compiled with CRYPTO_MDEBUG or friends is defined. If someone
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001653 wants to debug memory anyway, CRYPTO_malloc_debug_init() (which
1654 gives the standard debugging functions that come with OpenSSL) or
1655 CRYPTO_set_mem_debug_functions() (tells OpenSSL to use functions
1656 provided by the library user) must be used. When the standard
1657 debugging functions are used, CRYPTO_dbg_set_options can be used to
1658 request additional information:
1659 CRYPTO_dbg_set_options(V_CYRPTO_MDEBUG_xxx) corresponds to setting
1660 the CRYPTO_MDEBUG_xxx macro when compiling the library.
Richard Levittef3a2a041999-12-18 02:34:37 +00001661
1662 Also, things like CRYPTO_set_mem_functions will always give the
1663 expected result (the new set of functions is used for allocation
1664 and deallocation) at all times, regardless of platform and compiler
1665 options.
1666
1667 To finish it up, some functions that were never use in any other
1668 way than through macros have a new API and new semantic:
1669
1670 CRYPTO_dbg_malloc()
1671 CRYPTO_dbg_realloc()
1672 CRYPTO_dbg_free()
1673
1674 All macros of value have retained their old syntax.
Richard Levittecbfa4c32000-01-11 22:16:12 +00001675 [Richard Levitte and Bodo Moeller]
Richard Levitte9ac42ed1999-12-17 12:56:24 +00001676
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2166641999-12-11 20:04:06 +00001677 *) Some S/MIME fixes. The OID for SMIMECapabilities was wrong, the
1678 ordering of SMIMECapabilities wasn't in "strength order" and there
1679 was a missing NULL in the AlgorithmIdentifier for the SHA1 signature
1680 algorithm.
1681 [Steve Henson]
1682
Dr. Stephen Hensond8223ef1999-12-10 13:46:48 +00001683 *) Some ASN1 types with illegal zero length encoding (INTEGER,
1684 ENUMERATED and OBJECT IDENTIFIER) choked the ASN1 routines.
1685 [Frans Heymans <fheymans@isaserver.be>, modified by Steve Henson]
1686
Dr. Stephen Henson5a9a4b21999-12-05 00:40:59 +00001687 *) Merge in my S/MIME library for OpenSSL. This provides a simple
1688 S/MIME API on top of the PKCS#7 code, a MIME parser (with enough
1689 functionality to handle multipart/signed properly) and a utility
1690 called 'smime' to call all this stuff. This is based on code I
1691 originally wrote for Celo who have kindly allowed it to be
1692 included in OpenSSL.
1693 [Steve Henson]
1694
Bodo Möllercddfe781999-12-03 20:24:21 +00001695 *) Add variants des_set_key_checked and des_set_key_unchecked of
1696 des_set_key (aka des_key_sched). Global variable des_check_key
1697 decides which of these is called by des_set_key; this way
1698 des_check_key behaves as it always did, but applications and
1699 the library itself, which was buggy for des_check_key == 1,
1700 have a cleaner way to pick the version they need.
1701 [Bodo Moeller]
1702
Dr. Stephen Henson21131f01999-12-03 03:46:18 +00001703 *) New function PKCS12_newpass() which changes the password of a
1704 PKCS12 structure.
1705 [Steve Henson]
1706
Dr. Stephen Hensondd413411999-12-02 02:33:56 +00001707 *) Modify X509_TRUST and X509_PURPOSE so it also uses a static and
1708 dynamic mix. In both cases the ids can be used as an index into the
1709 table. Also modified the X509_TRUST_add() and X509_PURPOSE_add()
1710 functions so they accept a list of the field values and the
1711 application doesn't need to directly manipulate the X509_TRUST
1712 structure.
1713 [Steve Henson]
1714
1715 *) Modify the ASN1_STRING_TABLE stuff so it also uses bsearch and doesn't
1716 need initialising.
1717 [Steve Henson]
1718
Dr. Stephen Henson08cba611999-12-01 01:49:46 +00001719 *) Modify the way the V3 extension code looks up extensions. This now
1720 works in a similar way to the object code: we have some "standard"
1721 extensions in a static table which is searched with OBJ_bsearch()
1722 and the application can add dynamic ones if needed. The file
1723 crypto/x509v3/ext_dat.h now has the info: this file needs to be
1724 updated whenever a new extension is added to the core code and kept
1725 in ext_nid order. There is a simple program 'tabtest.c' which checks
1726 this. New extensions are not added too often so this file can readily
1727 be maintained manually.
1728
1729 There are two big advantages in doing things this way. The extensions
1730 can be looked up immediately and no longer need to be "added" using
1731 X509V3_add_standard_extensions(): this function now does nothing.
1732 [Side note: I get *lots* of email saying the extension code doesn't
1733 work because people forget to call this function]
1734 Also no dynamic allocation is done unless new extensions are added:
1735 so if we don't add custom extensions there is no need to call
1736 X509V3_EXT_cleanup().
1737 [Steve Henson]
1738
Ben Lauriefea9afb1999-11-30 20:15:19 +00001739 *) Modify enc utility's salting as follows: make salting the default. Add a
1740 magic header, so unsalted files fail gracefully instead of just decrypting
1741 to garbage. This is because not salting is a big security hole, so people
1742 should be discouraged from doing it.
1743 [Ben Laurie]
1744
Dr. Stephen Henson98682321999-11-27 01:14:04 +00001745 *) Fixes and enhancements to the 'x509' utility. It allowed a message
1746 digest to be passed on the command line but it only used this
1747 parameter when signing a certificate. Modified so all relevant
1748 operations are affected by the digest parameter including the
1749 -fingerprint and -x509toreq options. Also -x509toreq choked if a
1750 DSA key was used because it didn't fix the digest.
1751 [Steve Henson]
1752
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001753 *) Initial certificate chain verify code. Currently tests the untrusted
1754 certificates for consistency with the verify purpose (which is set
1755 when the X509_STORE_CTX structure is set up) and checks the pathlength.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001756
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001757 There is a NO_CHAIN_VERIFY compilation option to keep the old behaviour:
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001758 this is because it will reject chains with invalid extensions whereas
1759 every previous version of OpenSSL and SSLeay made no checks at all.
Dr. Stephen Henson51630a31999-11-27 19:43:10 +00001760
1761 Trust code: checks the root CA for the relevant trust settings. Trust
1762 settings have an initial value consistent with the verify purpose: e.g.
1763 if the verify purpose is for SSL client use it expects the CA to be
1764 trusted for SSL client use. However the default value can be changed to
1765 permit custom trust settings: one example of this would be to only trust
1766 certificates from a specific "secure" set of CAs.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001767
1768 Also added X509_STORE_CTX_new() and X509_STORE_CTX_free() functions
1769 which should be used for version portability: especially since the
1770 verify structure is likely to change more often now.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001771
Dr. Stephen Hensonbb7cd4e1999-11-29 22:35:00 +00001772 SSL integration. Add purpose and trust to SSL_CTX and SSL and functions
1773 to set them. If not set then assume SSL clients will verify SSL servers
1774 and vice versa.
1775
Dr. Stephen Hensond4cec6a1999-11-26 00:27:07 +00001776 Two new options to the verify program: -untrusted allows a set of
1777 untrusted certificates to be passed in and -purpose which sets the
1778 intended purpose of the certificate. If a purpose is set then the
1779 new chain verify code is used to check extension consistency.
Dr. Stephen Henson11262391999-11-24 01:31:49 +00001780 [Steve Henson]
1781
1782 *) Support for the authority information access extension.
Dr. Stephen Henson6d3724d1999-11-23 18:50:28 +00001783 [Steve Henson]
1784
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001785 *) Modify RSA and DSA PEM read routines to transparently handle
1786 PKCS#8 format private keys. New *_PUBKEY_* functions that handle
1787 public keys in a format compatible with certificate
1788 SubjectPublicKeyInfo structures. Unfortunately there were already
1789 functions called *_PublicKey_* which used various odd formats so
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001790 these are retained for compatibility: however the DSA variants were
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001791 never in a public release so they have been deleted. Changed dsa/rsa
1792 utilities to handle the new format: note no releases ever handled public
1793 keys so we should be OK.
1794
1795 The primary motivation for this change is to avoid the same fiasco
1796 that dogs private keys: there are several incompatible private key
1797 formats some of which are standard and some OpenSSL specific and
1798 require various evil hacks to allow partial transparent handling and
1799 even then it doesn't work with DER formats. Given the option anything
1800 other than PKCS#8 should be dumped: but the other formats have to
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001801 stay in the name of compatibility.
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001802
1803 With public keys and the benefit of hindsight one standard format
1804 is used which works with EVP_PKEY, RSA or DSA structures: though
1805 it clearly returns an error if you try to read the wrong kind of key.
1806
1807 Added a -pubkey option to the 'x509' utility to output the public key.
Bodo Möller6d0d5432000-02-26 08:36:46 +00001808 Also rename the EVP_PKEY_get_*() to EVP_PKEY_rget_*()
1809 (renamed to EVP_PKEY_get1_*() in the OpenSSL 0.9.5 release) and add
1810 EVP_PKEY_rset_*() functions (renamed to EVP_PKEY_set1_*())
1811 that do the same as the EVP_PKEY_assign_*() except they up the
1812 reference count of the added key (they don't "swallow" the
1813 supplied key).
Dr. Stephen Henson52664f51999-11-21 22:28:31 +00001814 [Steve Henson]
1815
1816 *) Fixes to crypto/x509/by_file.c the code to read in certificates and
1817 CRLs would fail if the file contained no certificates or no CRLs:
1818 added a new function to read in both types and return the number
1819 read: this means that if none are read it will be an error. The
1820 DER versions of the certificate and CRL reader would always fail
1821 because it isn't possible to mix certificates and CRLs in DER format
1822 without choking one or the other routine. Changed this to just read
1823 a certificate: this is the best we can do. Also modified the code
1824 in apps/verify.c to take notice of return codes: it was previously
1825 attempting to read in certificates from NULL pointers and ignoring
1826 any errors: this is one reason why the cert and CRL reader seemed
1827 to work. It doesn't check return codes from the default certificate
1828 routines: these may well fail if the certificates aren't installed.
1829 [Steve Henson]
1830
Dr. Stephen Hensona716d721999-11-19 02:19:58 +00001831 *) Code to support otherName option in GeneralName.
1832 [Steve Henson]
1833
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001834 *) First update to verify code. Change the verify utility
1835 so it warns if it is passed a self signed certificate:
1836 for consistency with the normal behaviour. X509_verify
1837 has been modified to it will now verify a self signed
1838 certificate if *exactly* the same certificate appears
1839 in the store: it was previously impossible to trust a
1840 single self signed certificate. This means that:
1841 openssl verify ss.pem
1842 now gives a warning about a self signed certificate but
1843 openssl verify -CAfile ss.pem ss.pem
1844 is OK.
1845 [Steve Henson]
1846
Bodo Möllerb1fe6ca1999-11-16 23:15:41 +00001847 *) For servers, store verify_result in SSL_SESSION data structure
1848 (and add it to external session representation).
1849 This is needed when client certificate verifications fails,
1850 but an application-provided verification callback (set by
1851 SSL_CTX_set_cert_verify_callback) allows accepting the session
1852 anyway (i.e. leaves x509_store_ctx->error != X509_V_OK
1853 but returns 1): When the session is reused, we have to set
1854 ssl->verify_result to the appropriate error code to avoid
1855 security holes.
1856 [Bodo Moeller, problem pointed out by Lutz Jaenicke]
1857
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001858 *) Fix a bug in the new PKCS#7 code: it didn't consider the
1859 case in PKCS7_dataInit() where the signed PKCS7 structure
1860 didn't contain any existing data because it was being created.
Dr. Stephen Hensonf76d8c41999-11-17 01:20:29 +00001861 [Po-Cheng Chen <pocheng@nst.com.tw>, slightly modified by Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson91895a51999-11-16 14:54:50 +00001862
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd699ac1999-11-16 02:49:25 +00001863 *) Add a salt to the key derivation routines in enc.c. This
1864 forms the first 8 bytes of the encrypted file. Also add a
1865 -S option to allow a salt to be input on the command line.
1866 [Steve Henson]
1867
Dr. Stephen Hensone947f391999-11-16 00:56:03 +00001868 *) New function X509_cmp(). Oddly enough there wasn't a function
1869 to compare two certificates. We do this by working out the SHA1
1870 hash and comparing that. X509_cmp() will be needed by the trust
1871 code.
1872 [Steve Henson]
1873
Bodo Möller07e6dbd2000-01-28 21:26:30 +00001874 *) SSL_get1_session() is like SSL_get_session(), but increments
1875 the reference count in the SSL_SESSION returned.
Mark J. Coxb7cfcfb1999-11-15 16:31:31 +00001876 [Geoff Thorpe <geoff@eu.c2.net>]
1877
Dr. Stephen Henson06556a11999-11-14 23:10:50 +00001878 *) Fix for 'req': it was adding a null to request attributes.
1879 Also change the X509_LOOKUP and X509_INFO code to handle
1880 certificate auxiliary information.
1881 [Steve Henson]
1882
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001883 *) Add support for 40 and 64 bit RC2 and RC4 algorithms: document
1884 the 'enc' command.
1885 [Steve Henson]
1886
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001887 *) Add the possibility to add extra information to the memory leak
1888 detecting output, to form tracebacks, showing from where each
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001889 allocation was originated: CRYPTO_push_info("constant string") adds
1890 the string plus current file name and line number to a per-thread
1891 stack, CRYPTO_pop_info() does the obvious, CRYPTO_remove_all_info()
1892 is like calling CYRPTO_pop_info() until the stack is empty.
1893 Also updated memory leak detection code to be multi-thread-safe.
Richard Levitte71d75261999-11-12 03:12:46 +00001894 [Richard Levitte]
1895
Dr. Stephen Hensona0e9f521999-11-14 03:23:17 +00001896 *) Add options -text and -noout to pkcs7 utility and delete the
Dr. Stephen Henson954ef7e1999-11-12 01:42:25 +00001897 encryption options which never did anything. Update docs.
1898 [Steve Henson]
1899
Dr. Stephen Hensonaf298111999-11-11 18:41:31 +00001900 *) Add options to some of the utilities to allow the pass phrase
1901 to be included on either the command line (not recommended on
1902 OSes like Unix) or read from the environment. Update the
1903 manpages and fix a few bugs.
1904 [Steve Henson]
1905
Dr. Stephen Hensonaba3e651999-11-10 02:52:17 +00001906 *) Add a few manpages for some of the openssl commands.
1907 [Steve Henson]
1908
Dr. Stephen Hensona0ad17b1999-11-08 13:58:08 +00001909 *) Fix the -revoke option in ca. It was freeing up memory twice,
1910 leaking and not finding already revoked certificates.
1911 [Steve Henson]
1912
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001913 *) Extensive changes to support certificate auxiliary information.
1914 This involves the use of X509_CERT_AUX structure and X509_AUX
1915 functions. An X509_AUX function such as PEM_read_X509_AUX()
1916 can still read in a certificate file in the usual way but it
1917 will also read in any additional "auxiliary information". By
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001918 doing things this way a fair degree of compatibility can be
Dr. Stephen Hensonce1b4fe1999-11-04 00:45:35 +00001919 retained: existing certificates can have this information added
1920 using the new 'x509' options.
1921
1922 Current auxiliary information includes an "alias" and some trust
1923 settings. The trust settings will ultimately be used in enhanced
1924 certificate chain verification routines: currently a certificate
1925 can only be trusted if it is self signed and then it is trusted
1926 for all purposes.
1927 [Steve Henson]
1928
Bodo Möllera8733562000-01-13 21:10:43 +00001929 *) Fix assembler for Alpha (tested only on DEC OSF not Linux or *BSD).
1930 The problem was that one of the replacement routines had not been working
1931 since SSLeay releases. For now the offending routine has been replaced
1932 with non-optimised assembler. Even so, this now gives around 95%
1933 performance improvement for 1024 bit RSA signs.
Mark J. Coxce2c95b1999-11-03 14:10:10 +00001934 [Mark Cox]
1935
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001936 *) Hack to fix PKCS#7 decryption when used with some unorthodox RC2
1937 handling. Most clients have the effective key size in bits equal to
1938 the key length in bits: so a 40 bit RC2 key uses a 40 bit (5 byte) key.
1939 A few however don't do this and instead use the size of the decrypted key
1940 to determine the RC2 key length and the AlgorithmIdentifier to determine
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00001941 the effective key length. In this case the effective key length can still
Dr. Stephen Henson9716a8f1999-10-29 13:06:25 +00001942 be 40 bits but the key length can be 168 bits for example. This is fixed
1943 by manually forcing an RC2 key into the EVP_PKEY structure because the
1944 EVP code can't currently handle unusual RC2 key sizes: it always assumes
1945 the key length and effective key length are equal.
1946 [Steve Henson]
1947
Dr. Stephen Henson74400f71999-10-27 00:15:11 +00001948 *) Add a bunch of functions that should simplify the creation of
1949 X509_NAME structures. Now you should be able to do:
1950 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, "CN", MBSTRING_ASC, "Steve", -1, -1, 0);
1951 and have it automatically work out the correct field type and fill in
1952 the structures. The more adventurous can try:
1953 X509_NAME_add_entry_by_txt(nm, field, MBSTRING_UTF8, str, -1, -1, 0);
1954 and it will (hopefully) work out the correct multibyte encoding.
1955 [Steve Henson]
1956
1957 *) Change the 'req' utility to use the new field handling and multibyte
1958 copy routines. Before the DN field creation was handled in an ad hoc
1959 way in req, ca, and x509 which was rather broken and didn't support
1960 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings. Since some software doesn't implement
1961 BMPStrings or UTF8Strings yet, they can be enabled using the config file
1962 using the dirstring_type option. See the new comment in the default
1963 openssl.cnf for more info.
1964 [Steve Henson]
1965
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001966 *) Make crypto/rand/md_rand.c more robust:
Bodo Möller62ac2931999-10-26 16:26:48 +00001967 - Assure unique random numbers after fork().
Bodo Möllerc1e744b1999-10-26 14:49:12 +00001968 - Make sure that concurrent threads access the global counter and
1969 md serializably so that we never lose entropy in them
1970 or use exactly the same state in multiple threads.
1971 Access to the large state is not always serializable because
1972 the additional locking could be a performance killer, and
1973 md should be large enough anyway.
1974 [Bodo Moeller]
1975
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001976 *) New file apps/app_rand.c with commonly needed functionality
1977 for handling the random seed file.
1978
1979 Use the random seed file in some applications that previously did not:
1980 ca,
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001981 dsaparam -genkey (which also ignored its '-rand' option),
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001982 s_client,
1983 s_server,
1984 x509 (when signing).
1985 Except on systems with /dev/urandom, it is crucial to have a random
1986 seed file at least for key creation, DSA signing, and for DH exchanges;
Bodo Möller99e87561999-10-26 11:19:42 +00001987 for RSA signatures we could do without one.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001988
1989 gendh and gendsa (unlike genrsa) used to read only the first byte
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001990 of each file listed in the '-rand' option. The function as previously
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001991 found in genrsa is now in app_rand.c and is used by all programs
Bodo Möller78baa171999-12-22 16:10:44 +00001992 that support '-rand'.
Bodo Möllera31011e1999-10-26 01:56:29 +00001993 [Bodo Moeller]
1994
1995 *) In RAND_write_file, use mode 0600 for creating files;
1996 don't just chmod when it may be too late.
1997 [Bodo Moeller]
1998
1999 *) Report an error from X509_STORE_load_locations
2000 when X509_LOOKUP_load_file or X509_LOOKUP_add_dir failed.
2001 [Bill Perry]
2002
Dr. Stephen Henson462f79e1999-10-21 13:20:49 +00002003 *) New function ASN1_mbstring_copy() this copies a string in either
2004 ASCII, Unicode, Universal (4 bytes per character) or UTF8 format
2005 into an ASN1_STRING type. A mask of permissible types is passed
2006 and it chooses the "minimal" type to use or an error if not type
2007 is suitable.
2008 [Steve Henson]
2009
Dr. Stephen Henson08e9c1a1999-10-20 01:50:23 +00002010 *) Add function equivalents to the various macros in asn1.h. The old
2011 macros are retained with an M_ prefix. Code inside the library can
2012 use the M_ macros. External code (including the openssl utility)
2013 should *NOT* in order to be "shared library friendly".
2014 [Steve Henson]
2015
Dr. Stephen Henson673b1021999-10-13 01:11:56 +00002016 *) Add various functions that can check a certificate's extensions
2017 to see if it usable for various purposes such as SSL client,
2018 server or S/MIME and CAs of these types. This is currently
2019 VERY EXPERIMENTAL but will ultimately be used for certificate chain
2020 verification. Also added a -purpose flag to x509 utility to
2021 print out all the purposes.
2022 [Steve Henson]
2023
Dr. Stephen Henson56a3fec1999-10-11 01:30:04 +00002024 *) Add a CRYPTO_EX_DATA to X509 certificate structure and associated
2025 functions.
2026 [Steve Henson]
2027
Dr. Stephen Henson4654ef91999-10-09 02:54:10 +00002028 *) New X509V3_{X509,CRL,REVOKED}_get_d2i() functions. These will search
2029 for, obtain and decode and extension and obtain its critical flag.
2030 This allows all the necessary extension code to be handled in a
2031 single function call.
2032 [Steve Henson]
2033
Andy Polyakov7e102e21999-10-07 12:10:26 +00002034 *) RC4 tune-up featuring 30-40% performance improvement on most RISC
2035 platforms. See crypto/rc4/rc4_enc.c for further details.
2036 [Andy Polyakov]
2037
Dr. Stephen Hensond71c6bc1999-10-05 13:10:21 +00002038 *) New -noout option to asn1parse. This causes no output to be produced
2039 its main use is when combined with -strparse and -out to extract data
2040 from a file (which may not be in ASN.1 format).
2041 [Steve Henson]
2042
Dr. Stephen Henson2d681b71999-10-05 12:57:50 +00002043 *) Fix for pkcs12 program. It was hashing an invalid certificate pointer
2044 when producing the local key id.
2045 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2046
Dr. Stephen Henson3908cdf1999-10-04 23:56:06 +00002047 *) New option -dhparam in s_server. This allows a DH parameter file to be
2048 stated explicitly. If it is not stated then it tries the first server
2049 certificate file. The previous behaviour hard coded the filename
2050 "server.pem".
2051 [Steve Henson]
2052
Dr. Stephen Henson3ea23631999-10-04 21:17:47 +00002053 *) Add -pubin and -pubout options to the rsa and dsa commands. These allow
2054 a public key to be input or output. For example:
2055 openssl rsa -in key.pem -pubout -out pubkey.pem
2056 Also added necessary DSA public key functions to handle this.
2057 [Steve Henson]
2058
Dr. Stephen Henson393f2c61999-10-04 12:08:59 +00002059 *) Fix so PKCS7_dataVerify() doesn't crash if no certificates are contained
2060 in the message. This was handled by allowing
2061 X509_find_by_issuer_and_serial() to tolerate a NULL passed to it.
2062 [Steve Henson, reported by Sampo Kellomaki <sampo@mail.neuronio.pt>]
2063
2064 *) Fix for bug in d2i_ASN1_bytes(): other ASN1 functions add an extra null
2065 to the end of the strings whereas this didn't. This would cause problems
2066 if strings read with d2i_ASN1_bytes() were later modified.

2068
Dr. Stephen Henson4579dd51999-10-02 13:33:06 +00002069 *) Fix for base64 decode bug. When a base64 bio reads only one line of
2070 data and it contains EOF it will end up returning an error. This is
2071 caused by input 46 bytes long. The cause is due to the way base64
2072 BIOs find the start of base64 encoded data. They do this by trying a
2073 trial decode on each line until they find one that works. When they
2074 do a flag is set and it starts again knowing it can pass all the
2075 data directly through the decoder. Unfortunately it doesn't reset
2076 the context it uses. This means that if EOF is reached an attempt
2077 is made to pass two EOFs through the context and this causes the
2078 resulting error. This can also cause other problems as well. As is
2079 usual with these problems it takes *ages* to find and the fix is
2080 trivial: move one line.
2081 [Steve Henson, reported by ian@uns.ns.ac.yu (Ivan Nejgebauer) ]
2082
Dr. Stephen Henson06f45361999-09-20 22:09:17 +00002083 *) Ugly workaround to get s_client and s_server working under Windows. The
2084 old code wouldn't work because it needed to select() on sockets and the
2085 tty (for keypresses and to see if data could be written). Win32 only
2086 supports select() on sockets so we select() with a 1s timeout on the
2087 sockets and then see if any characters are waiting to be read, if none
2088 are present then we retry, we also assume we can always write data to
2089 the tty. This isn't nice because the code then blocks until we've
2090 received a complete line of data and it is effectively polling the
2091 keyboard at 1s intervals: however it's quite a bit better than not
2092 working at all :-) A dedicated Windows application might handle this
2093 with an event loop for example.
2094 [Steve Henson]
2095
Dr. Stephen Henson1c800191999-09-18 22:37:44 +00002096 *) Enhance RSA_METHOD structure. Now there are two extra methods, rsa_sign
2097 and rsa_verify. When the RSA_FLAGS_SIGN_VER option is set these functions
2098 will be called when RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() are used. This is useful
2099 if rsa_pub_dec() and rsa_priv_enc() equivalents are not available.
2100 For this to work properly RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt()
2101 should *not* be used: RSA_sign() and RSA_verify() must be used instead.
2102 This necessitated the support of an extra signature type NID_md5_sha1
2103 for SSL signatures and modifications to the SSL library to use it instead
2104 of calling RSA_public_decrypt() and RSA_private_encrypt().
2105 [Steve Henson]
2106
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00002107 *) Add new -verify -CAfile and -CApath options to the crl program, these
2108 will lookup a CRL issuers certificate and verify the signature in a
2109 similar way to the verify program. Tidy up the crl program so it
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00002110 no longer accesses structures directly. Make the ASN1 CRL parsing a bit
Dr. Stephen Henson090d8481999-09-18 01:42:02 +00002111 less strict. It will now permit CRL extensions even if it is not
2112 a V2 CRL: this will allow it to tolerate some broken CRLs.
2113 [Steve Henson]
2114
Bodo Möller396f6311999-09-08 21:58:13 +00002115 *) Initialize all non-automatic variables each time one of the openssl
2116 sub-programs is started (this is necessary as they may be started
2117 multiple times from the "OpenSSL>" prompt).
2118 [Lennart Bang, Bodo Moeller]
2119
Dr. Stephen Henson4a61a641999-09-08 18:02:25 +00002120 *) Preliminary compilation option RSA_NULL which disables RSA crypto without
2121 removing all other RSA functionality (this is what NO_RSA does). This
2122 is so (for example) those in the US can disable those operations covered
2123 by the RSA patent while allowing storage and parsing of RSA keys and RSA
2124 key generation.

2130
Dr. Stephen Hensona785abc1999-09-07 12:16:29 +00002131 *) New function ANS1_tag2str() to convert an ASN1 tag to a descriptive
2132 ASCII string. This was handled independently in various places before.
2133 [Steve Henson]
2134
Dr. Stephen Hensonaef838f1999-09-04 17:19:55 +00002135 *) New functions UTF8_getc() and UTF8_putc() that parse and generate
2136 UTF8 strings a character at a time.
2137 [Steve Henson]
2138
Bodo Möller074309b1999-09-03 16:33:11 +00002139 *) Use client_version from client hello to select the protocol
2140 (s23_srvr.c) and for RSA client key exchange verification
2141 (s3_srvr.c), as required by the SSL 3.0/TLS 1.0 specifications.
2142 [Bodo Moeller]
2143
Dr. Stephen Henson8ce97161999-09-03 01:08:34 +00002144 *) Add various utility functions to handle SPKACs, these were previously
2145 handled by poking round in the structure internals. Added new function
2146 NETSCAPE_SPKI_print() to print out SPKAC and a new utility 'spkac' to
2147 print, verify and generate SPKACs. Based on an original idea from
2148 Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@comune.modena.it> but extensively modified.

2150
Andy Polyakov2d4287d1999-08-28 13:18:25 +00002151 *) RIPEMD160 is operational on all platforms and is back in 'make test'.

2153
Dr. Stephen Henson87a25f91999-08-27 00:08:17 +00002154 *) Allow the config file extension section to be overwritten on the
2155 command line. Based on an original idea from Massimiliano Pala
2156 <madwolf@comune.modena.it>. The new option is called -extensions
2157 and can be applied to ca, req and x509. Also -reqexts to override
2158 the request extensions in req and -crlexts to override the crl extensions
2159 in ca.
2160 [Steve Henson]
2161
Dr. Stephen Hensonf9150e51999-08-25 23:18:23 +00002162 *) Add new feature to the SPKAC handling in ca. Now you can include
2163 the same field multiple times by preceding it by "XXXX." for example:
2164 1.OU="Unit name 1"
2165 2.OU="Unit name 2"
2166 this is the same syntax as used in the req config file.
2167 [Steve Henson]
2168
Dr. Stephen Hensonc79b16e1999-08-25 16:59:26 +00002169 *) Allow certificate extensions to be added to certificate requests. These
2170 are specified in a 'req_extensions' option of the req section of the
2171 config file. They can be printed out with the -text option to req but
2172 are otherwise ignored at present.
2173 [Steve Henson]
2174
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00002175 *) Fix a horrible bug in enc_read() in crypto/evp/bio_enc.c: if the first
Bodo Möller0f7e6fe1999-09-24 20:24:24 +00002176 data read consists of only the final block it would not decrypted because
Dr. Stephen Henson7b65c321999-08-24 13:21:35 +00002177 EVP_CipherUpdate() would correctly report zero bytes had been decrypted.
2178 A misplaced 'break' also meant the decrypted final block might not be
2179 copied until the next read.
2180 [Steve Henson]
2181
Dr. Stephen Henson13066ce1999-08-23 23:11:32 +00002182 *) Initial support for DH_METHOD. Again based on RSA_METHOD. Also added
2183 a few extra parameters to the DH structure: these will be useful if
2184 for example we want the value of 'q' or implement X9.42 DH.
2185 [Steve Henson]
2186
Dr. Stephen Hensonc0711f71999-08-22 17:57:38 +00002187 *) Initial support for DSA_METHOD. This is based on the RSA_METHOD and
2188 provides hooks that allow the default DSA functions or functions on a
2189 "per key" basis to be replaced. This allows hardware acceleration and
2190 hardware key storage to be handled without major modification to the
2191 library. Also added low level modexp hooks and CRYPTO_EX structure and
2192 associated functions.
2193 [Steve Henson]
2194
Dr. Stephen Henson84847211999-08-19 13:07:43 +00002195 *) Add a new flag to memory BIOs, BIO_FLAG_MEM_RDONLY. This marks the BIO
2196 as "read only": it can't be written to and the buffer it points to will
2197 not be freed. Reading from a read only BIO is much more efficient than
2198 a normal memory BIO. This was added because there are several times when
2199 an area of memory needs to be read from a BIO. The previous method was
2200 to create a memory BIO and write the data to it, this results in two
2201 copies of the data and an O(n^2) reading algorithm. There is a new
2202 function BIO_new_mem_buf() which creates a read only memory BIO from
2203 an area of memory. Also modified the PKCS#7 routines to use read only
Ulf Möller0f583f62000-01-07 03:17:47 +00002204 memory BIOs.

2206
Bodo Möllerde1915e1999-08-18 17:14:42 +00002207 *) Bugfix: ssl23_get_client_hello did not work properly when called in
2208 state SSL23_ST_SR_CLNT_HELLO_B, i.e. when the first 7 bytes of
2209 a SSLv2-compatible client hello for SSLv3 or TLSv1 could be read,
2210 but a retry condition occured while trying to read the rest.
2211 [Bodo Moeller]
2212
Dr. Stephen Hensonc6c34501999-08-17 12:58:01 +00002213 *) The PKCS7_ENC_CONTENT_new() function was setting the content type as
2214 NID_pkcs7_encrypted by default: this was wrong since this should almost
2215 always be NID_pkcs7_data. Also modified the PKCS7_set_type() to handle
2216 the encrypted data type: this is a more sensible place to put it and it
2217 allows the PKCS#12 code to be tidied up that duplicated this
2218 functionality.
2219 [Steve Henson]
2220
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00002221 *) Changed obj_dat.pl script so it takes its input and output files on
2222 the command line. This should avoid shell escape redirection problems
2223 under Win32.
2224 [Steve Henson]
2225
Dr. Stephen Henson87c49f61999-08-09 22:38:05 +00002226 *) Initial support for certificate extension requests, these are included
Dr. Stephen Hensonfd520571999-08-11 13:08:58 +00002227 in things like Xenroll certificate requests. Included functions to allow
2228 extensions to be obtained and added.

2241 [Andrija Antonijevic <TheAntony2@bigfoot.com>]
2242
Dr. Stephen Hensoned7f60f1999-08-06 21:47:09 +00002243 *) Fix -startdate and -enddate (which was missing) arguments to 'ca'
2244 program.
2245 [Steve Henson]
2246
Bodo Möller48c843c1999-08-05 11:50:18 +00002247 *) New function DSA_dup_DH, which duplicates DSA parameters/keys as
2248 DH parameters/keys (q is lost during that conversion, but the resulting
2249 DH parameters contain its length).
2250
2251 For 1024-bit p, DSA_generate_parameters followed by DSA_dup_DH is
2252 much faster than DH_generate_parameters (which creates parameters
2253 where p = 2*q + 1), and also the smaller q makes DH computations
2254 much more efficient (160-bit exponentiation instead of 1024-bit
2255 exponentiation); so this provides a convenient way to support DHE
2256 ciphersuites in SSL/TLS servers (see ssl/ssltest.c). It is of
2257 utter importance to use
2258 SSL_CTX_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
2259 or
2260 SSL_set_options(s_ctx, SSL_OP_SINGLE_DH_USE);
2261 when such DH parameters are used, because otherwise small subgroup
2262 attacks may become possible!
2263 [Bodo Moeller]
2264
2265 *) Avoid memory leak in i2d_DHparams.
2266 [Bodo Moeller]
2267
Dr. Stephen Henson922180d1999-07-30 01:12:46 +00002268 *) Allow the -k option to be used more than once in the enc program:
2269 this allows the same encrypted message to be read by multiple recipients.
2270 [Steve Henson]
2271
Dr. Stephen Henson3e3d2ea1999-07-27 22:22:58 +00002272 *) New function OBJ_obj2txt(buf, buf_len, a, no_name), this converts
2273 an ASN1_OBJECT to a text string. If the "no_name" parameter is set then
2274 it will always use the numerical form of the OID, even if it has a short
2275 or long name.
2276 [Steve Henson]
2277
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00002278 *) Added an extra RSA flag: RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY. Previously the rsa_mod_exp
2279 method only got called if p,q,dmp1,dmq1,iqmp components were present,
2280 otherwise bn_mod_exp was called. In the case of hardware keys for example
2281 no private key components need be present and it might store extra data
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00002282 in the RSA structure, which cannot be accessed from bn_mod_exp.
2283 By setting RSA_FLAG_EXT_PKEY rsa_mod_exp will always be called for
2284 private key operations.
Dr. Stephen Henson770d19b1999-07-27 21:58:08 +00002285 [Steve Henson]
2286
Andy Polyakova0618e31999-07-25 15:13:49 +00002287 *) Added support for SPARC Linux.
2288 [Andy Polyakov]
2289
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002290 *) pem_password_cb function type incompatibly changed from
2291 typedef int pem_password_cb(char *buf, int size, int rwflag);
2292 to
2293 ....(char *buf, int size, int rwflag, void *userdata);
2294 so that applications can pass data to their callbacks:
2295 The PEM[_ASN1]_{read,write}... functions and macros now take an
2296 additional void * argument, which is just handed through whenever
2297 the password callback is called.
Bodo Möller96c22011999-09-21 13:33:15 +00002298 [Damien Miller <dmiller@ilogic.com.au>; tiny changes by Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möller74678cc1999-07-21 20:57:16 +00002299
2300 New function SSL_CTX_set_default_passwd_cb_userdata.
2301
2302 Compatibility note: As many C implementations push function arguments
2303 onto the stack in reverse order, the new library version is likely to
2304 interoperate with programs that have been compiled with the old
2305 pem_password_cb definition (PEM_whatever takes some data that
2306 happens to be on the stack as its last argument, and the callback
2307 just ignores this garbage); but there is no guarantee whatsoever that
2308 this will work.
Bodo Möller0cceb1c1999-05-30 23:54:52 +00002309
Bodo Möller664b9981999-07-21 20:49:15 +00002310 *) The -DPLATFORM="\"$(PLATFORM)\"" definition and the similar -DCFLAGS=...
2311 (both in crypto/Makefile.ssl for use by crypto/cversion.c) caused
2312 problems not only on Windows, but also on some Unix platforms.
Bodo Möller2e0fc871999-07-27 09:10:36 +00002313 To avoid problematic command lines, these definitions are now in an

2319 [Andy Polyakov]
2320
Ulf Möller64344501999-07-16 00:50:45 +00002321 *) More DES library cleanups: remove references to srand/rand and

2323 [Ulf Möller]
2324
Dr. Stephen Hensonb617a5b1999-07-12 23:35:10 +00002325 *) Add support for the the free Netwide assembler (NASM) under Win32,
2326 since not many people have MASM (ml) and it can be hard to obtain.
2327 This is currently experimental but it seems to work OK and pass all
2328 the tests. Check out INSTALL.W32 for info.
2329 [Steve Henson]
2330
Bodo Möller50596581999-07-12 17:15:42 +00002331 *) Fix memory leaks in s3_clnt.c: All non-anonymous SSL3/TLS1 connections
2332 without temporary keys kept an extra copy of the server key,
2333 and connections with temporary keys did not free everything in case
2334 of an error.
2335 [Bodo Moeller]
2336
Bodo Möller03cd4941999-07-11 22:00:55 +00002337 *) New function RSA_check_key and new openssl rsa option -check
2338 for verifying the consistency of RSA keys.
2339 [Ulf Moeller, Bodo Moeller]
2340
Dr. Stephen Hensonf598cd11999-07-11 17:09:04 +00002341 *) Various changes to make Win32 compile work:

Dr. Stephen Hensonf5139391999-07-11 12:40:46 +00002348 *) Add a debugging option to PKCS#5 v2 key generation function: when

2350 derived keys are printed to stderr.
2351 [Steve Henson]
2352
Dr. Stephen Henson0ab8beb1999-07-11 12:30:55 +00002353 *) Copy the flags in ASN1_STRING_dup().
2354 [Roman E. Pavlov <pre@mo.msk.ru>]
2355
Dr. Stephen Hensonf7daafa1999-07-11 01:48:21 +00002356 *) The x509 application mishandled signing requests containing DSA
2357 keys when the signing key was also DSA and the parameters didn't match.
2358
2359 It was supposed to omit the parameters when they matched the signing key:
2360 the verifying software was then supposed to automatically use the CA's
2361 parameters if they were absent from the end user certificate.
2362
2363 Omitting parameters is no longer recommended. The test was also
2364 the wrong way round! This was probably due to unusual behaviour in
2365 EVP_cmp_parameters() which returns 1 if the parameters match.
2366 This meant that parameters were omitted when they *didn't* match and
2367 the certificate was useless. Certificates signed with 'ca' didn't have
2368 this bug.
2369 [Steve Henson, reported by Doug Erickson <Doug.Erickson@Part.NET>]
2370
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00002371 *) Memory leak checking (-DCRYPTO_MDEBUG) had some problems.
2372 The interface is as follows:
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00002373 Applications can use
2374 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ON) aka MemCheck_start(),
2375 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_OFF) aka MemCheck_stop();
2376 "off" is now the default.
2377 The library internally uses
2378 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_DISABLE) aka MemCheck_off(),
2379 CRYPTO_mem_ctrl(CRYPTO_MEM_CHECK_ENABLE) aka MemCheck_on()
2380 to disable memory-checking temporarily.
2381
2382 Some inconsistent states that previously were possible (and were
2383 even the default) are now avoided.
Bodo Möller458cddc1999-07-19 09:25:35 +00002384
2385 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_TIME is new and additionally stores the current time
2386 with each memory chunk allocated; this is occasionally more helpful
2387 than just having a counter.
Bodo Möllere3911161999-07-19 10:36:10 +00002388
2389 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_THREAD is also new and adds the thread ID.

2391 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG_ALL enables all of the above, plus any future
2392 extensions.
Bodo Möller777ab7e1999-07-09 16:27:30 +00002393 [Bodo Moeller]
2394
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00002395 *) Introduce "mode" for SSL structures (with defaults in SSL_CTX),
2396 which largely parallels "options", but is for changing API behaviour,
2397 whereas "options" are about protocol behaviour.
Bodo Möller9c962481999-07-19 12:59:12 +00002398 Initial "mode" flags are:
Bodo Möllere1056431999-07-02 13:55:32 +00002399
2400 SSL_MODE_ENABLE_PARTIAL_WRITE Allow SSL_write to report success when
2401 a single record has been written.
2402 SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER Don't insist that SSL_write
2403 retries use the same buffer location.
2404 (But all of the contents must be
2405 copied!)
2406 [Bodo Moeller]
2407
2408 *) Bugfix: SSL_set_mode ignored its parameter, only SSL_CTX_set_mode
2409 worked.
2410
Ulf Möller5271ebd1999-06-30 00:42:56 +00002411 *) Fix problems with no-hmac etc.
2412 [Ulf Möller, pointed out by Brian Wellington <bwelling@tislabs.com>]
2413
Dr. Stephen Hensonce8b2571999-06-29 22:22:42 +00002414 *) New functions RSA_get_default_method(), RSA_set_method() and
2415 RSA_get_method(). These allows replacement of RSA_METHODs without having
2416 to mess around with the internals of an RSA structure.
2417 [Steve Henson]
2418
Bodo Möller9c729e01999-06-25 14:04:10 +00002419 *) Fix memory leaks in DSA_do_sign and DSA_is_prime.
2420 Also really enable memory leak checks in openssl.c and in some
2421 test programs.
2422 [Chad C. Mulligan, Bodo Moeller]
2423
Dr. Stephen Henson034292a1999-06-24 01:50:27 +00002424 *) Fix a bug in d2i_ASN1_INTEGER() and i2d_ASN1_INTEGER() which can mess
2425 up the length of negative integers. This has now been simplified to just
2426 store the length when it is first determined and use it later, rather
2427 than trying to keep track of where data is copied and updating it to
2428 point to the end.
2429 [Steve Henson, reported by Brien Wheeler
2430 <bwheeler@authentica-security.com>]
2431
Dr. Stephen Henson170afce1999-06-22 13:33:22 +00002432 *) Add a new function PKCS7_signatureVerify. This allows the verification
2433 of a PKCS#7 signature but with the signing certificate passed to the
2434 function itself. This contrasts with PKCS7_dataVerify which assumes the
2435 certificate is present in the PKCS#7 structure. This isn't always the
2436 case: certificates can be omitted from a PKCS#7 structure and be
2437 distributed by "out of band" means (such as a certificate database).
2438 [Steve Henson]
2439
Dr. Stephen Hensondbd665c1999-06-22 01:38:31 +00002440 *) Complete the PEM_* macros with DECLARE_PEM versions to replace the
2441 function prototypes in pem.h, also change util/mkdef.pl to add the
2442 necessary function names.
2443 [Steve Henson]
2444
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00002445 *) mk1mf.pl (used by Windows builds) did not properly read the
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00002446 options set by Configure in the top level Makefile, and Configure
Bodo Möller975d3dc1999-07-09 13:02:14 +00002447 was not even able to write more than one option correctly.
Bodo Möller6888f2b1999-07-09 12:01:40 +00002448 Fixed, now "no-idea no-rc5 -DCRYPTO_MDEBUG" etc. works as intended.
Bodo Möllerf76a8081999-06-21 11:32:25 +00002449 [Bodo Moeller]
2450
Dr. Stephen Henson8623f691999-06-20 17:36:11 +00002451 *) New functions CONF_load_bio() and CONF_load_fp() to allow a config
2452 file to be loaded from a BIO or FILE pointer. The BIO version will
2453 for example allow memory BIOs to contain config info.
2454 [Steve Henson]
2455
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00002456 *) New function "CRYPTO_num_locks" that returns CRYPTO_NUM_LOCKS.
2457 Whoever hopes to achieve shared-library compatibility across versions
2458 must use this, not the compile-time macro.
Bodo Möller11af1a21999-06-18 18:22:38 +00002459 (Exercise 0.9.4: Which is the minimum library version required by
2460 such programs?)
2461 Note: All this applies only to multi-threaded programs, others don't
2462 need locks.
Bodo Möllera1113061999-06-18 16:14:18 +00002463 [Bodo Moeller]
2464
Bodo Möller95d29591999-06-12 01:03:40 +00002465 *) Add missing case to s3_clnt.c state machine -- one of the new SSL tests
2466 through a BIO pair triggered the default case, i.e.
2467 SSLerr(...,SSL_R_UNKNOWN_STATE).
2468 [Bodo Moeller]
2469
2470 *) New "BIO pair" concept (crypto/bio/bss_bio.c) so that applications
2471 can use the SSL library even if none of the specific BIOs is
2472 appropriate.
2473 [Bodo Moeller]
2474
Dr. Stephen Henson9bce3071999-06-11 22:30:45 +00002475 *) Fix a bug in i2d_DSAPublicKey() which meant it returned the wrong value
2476 for the encoded length.
2477 [Jeon KyoungHo <khjeon@sds.samsung.co.kr>]
2478
Dr. Stephen Henson565d1061999-06-11 01:58:42 +00002479 *) Add initial documentation of the X509V3 functions.
2480 [Steve Henson]
2481
Dr. Stephen Hensonb7d135b1999-06-10 17:32:52 +00002482 *) Add a new pair of functions PEM_write_PKCS8PrivateKey() and
2483 PEM_write_bio_PKCS8PrivateKey() that are equivalent to
2484 PEM_write_PrivateKey() and PEM_write_bio_PrivateKey() but use the more
2485 secure PKCS#8 private key format with a high iteration count.
2486 [Steve Henson]
2487
Ralf S. Engelschall9d9b5591999-06-10 08:13:52 +00002488 *) Fix determination of Perl interpreter: A perl or perl5
2489 _directory_ in $PATH was also accepted as the interpreter.
2490 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2491
Dr. Stephen Henson5f6d0ea1999-06-09 23:33:48 +00002492 *) Fix demos/sign/sign.c: well there wasn't anything strictly speaking
2493 wrong with it but it was very old and did things like calling
2494 PEM_ASN1_read() directly and used MD5 for the hash not to mention some
2495 unusual formatting.
2496 [Steve Henson]
2497
Dr. Stephen Hensonf62676b1999-06-09 18:05:30 +00002498 *) Fix demos/selfsign.c: it used obsolete and deleted functions, changed
2499 to use the new extension code.
2500 [Steve Henson]
2501
2502 *) Implement the PEM_read/PEM_write functions in crypto/pem/pem_all.c
2503 with macros. This should make it easier to change their form, add extra
2504 arguments etc. Fix a few PEM prototypes which didn't have cipher as a
2505 constant.
2506 [Steve Henson]
2507
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00002508 *) Add to configuration table a new entry that can specify an alternative
2509 name for unistd.h (for pre-POSIX systems); we need this for NeXTstep,
2510 according to Mark Crispin <MRC@Panda.COM>.
2511 [Bodo Moeller]
2512
Bodo Möllerc77f47a1999-06-09 13:41:51 +00002513#if 0
Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00002514 *) DES CBC did not update the IV. Weird.

Ben Laurie05861c71999-06-09 11:08:36 +00002521
Ben Laurie233bf731999-06-09 10:19:53 +00002522 *) When bntest is run from "make test" it drives bc to check its
2523 calculations, as well as internally checking them. If an internal check
2524 fails, it needs to cause bc to give a non-zero result or make test carries
2525 on without noticing the failure. Fixed.
2526 [Ben Laurie]
2527
Ulf Möller908eb7b1999-06-08 16:35:11 +00002528 *) DES library cleanups.
2529 [Ulf Möller]
2530
Dr. Stephen Henson8eb57af1999-06-08 00:09:51 +00002531 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 PBE algorithms. This will permit PKCS#8 to be
2532 used with any cipher unlike PKCS#5 v1.5 which can at most handle 64 bit
2533 ciphers. NOTE: although the key derivation function has been verified
2534 against some published test vectors it has not been extensively tested
2535 yet. Added a -v2 "cipher" option to pkcs8 application to allow the use
2536 of v2.0.
2537 [Steve Henson]
2538
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00002539 *) Instead of "mkdir -p", which is not fully portable, use new
2540 Perl script "util/mkdir-p.pl".
Bodo Möller8151f521999-06-09 13:29:51 +00002541 [Bodo Moeller]
Bodo Möllerd4443ed1999-06-07 13:34:25 +00002542
Dr. Stephen Henson69cbf461999-06-06 13:07:13 +00002543 *) Rewrite the way password based encryption (PBE) is handled. It used to
2544 assume that the ASN1 AlgorithmIdentifier parameter was a PBEParameter
2545 structure. This was true for the PKCS#5 v1.5 and PKCS#12 PBE algorithms
2546 but doesn't apply to PKCS#5 v2.0 where it can be something else. Now
2547 the 'parameter' field of the AlgorithmIdentifier is passed to the
2548 underlying key generation function so it must do its own ASN1 parsing.
2549 This has also changed the EVP_PBE_CipherInit() function which now has a
2550 'parameter' argument instead of literal salt and iteration count values
2551 and the function EVP_PBE_ALGOR_CipherInit() has been deleted.
2552 [Steve Henson]
2553
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00002554 *) Support for PKCS#5 v1.5 compatible password based encryption algorithms
Dr. Stephen Hensone7871ff1999-06-05 12:39:10 +00002555 and PKCS#8 functionality. New 'pkcs8' application linked to openssl.
2556 Needed to change the PEM_STRING_EVP_PKEY value which was just "PRIVATE
2557 KEY" because this clashed with PKCS#8 unencrypted string. Since this
2558 value was just used as a "magic string" and not used directly its
2559 value doesn't matter.
Dr. Stephen Hensonef8335d1999-06-04 23:32:14 +00002560 [Steve Henson]
2561
Ben Laurie84c15db1999-06-04 22:23:10 +00002562 *) Introduce some semblance of const correctness to BN. Shame C doesn't
2563 support mutable.
2564 [Ben Laurie]
2565
Bodo Möller272c9331999-06-07 00:26:20 +00002566 *) "linux-sparc64" configuration (ultrapenguin).

Ulf Möllera53955d1999-06-04 21:35:58 +00002571 *) config now generates no-xxx options for missing ciphers.
2572 [Ulf Möller]
2573
2574 *) Support the EBCDIC character set (work in progress).
2575 File ebcdic.c not yet included because it has a different license.
2576 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
2577
2578 *) Support BS2000/OSD-POSIX.
2579 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>]
2580
Ben Laurieb4f76581999-06-03 18:04:04 +00002581 *) Make callbacks for key generation use void * instead of char *.
2582 [Ben Laurie]
2583
Ben Laurie213a75d1999-06-03 16:07:37 +00002584 *) Make S/MIME samples compile (not yet tested).
2585 [Ben Laurie]
2586
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002587 *) Additional typesafe stacks.
2588 [Ben Laurie]
2589
Bodo Möller885982d1999-06-04 21:46:35 +00002590 *) New configuration variants "bsdi-elf-gcc" (BSD/OS 4.x).

Bodo Möllere95f6261999-05-27 20:55:18 +00002601 *) Add missing BIO_free at exit of pkcs12 application.
2602 [Wu Zhigang]
2603
2604 *) Fix memory leak in conf.c.
2605 [Steve Henson]
2606
Bodo Möller472bde41999-05-27 20:49:27 +00002607 *) Updates for Win32 to assembler version of MD5.
2608 [Steve Henson]
2609
2610 *) Set #! path to perl in apps/der_chop to where we found it
2611 instead of using a fixed path.
2612 [Bodo Moeller]
2613
2614 *) SHA library changes for irix64-mips4-cc.
2615 [Andy Polyakov]
2616
2617 *) Improvements for VMS support.

Bodo Möller557068c1999-05-24 22:38:23 +00002621 Changes between 0.9.2b and 0.9.3 [24 May 1999]
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00002622
Ulf Möllere14d4441999-05-20 01:43:07 +00002623 *) Bignum library bug fix. IRIX 6 passes "make test" now!
2624 This also avoids the problems with SC4.2 and unpatched SC5.
2625 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2626
Dr. Stephen Hensone84240d1999-05-19 12:45:16 +00002627 *) New functions sk_num, sk_value and sk_set to replace the previous macros.
2628 These are required because of the typesafe stack would otherwise break
2629 existing code. If old code used a structure member which used to be STACK
2630 and is now STACK_OF (for example cert in a PKCS7_SIGNED structure) with
2631 sk_num or sk_value it would produce an error because the num, data members
2632 are not present in STACK_OF. Now it just produces a warning. sk_set
2633 replaces the old method of assigning a value to sk_value
2634 (e.g. sk_value(x, i) = y) which the library used in a few cases. Any code
2635 that does this will no longer work (and should use sk_set instead) but
2636 this could be regarded as a "questionable" behaviour anyway.
2637 [Steve Henson]
2638
Dr. Stephen Henson1b266da1999-05-16 17:32:32 +00002639 *) Fix most of the other PKCS#7 bugs. The "experimental" code can now
2640 correctly handle encrypted S/MIME data.
2641 [Steve Henson]
2642
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00002643 *) Change type of various DES function arguments from des_cblock
Bodo Möllerf43c8141999-05-16 14:20:17 +00002644 (which means, in function argument declarations, pointer to char)
Bodo Möller55519bb1999-05-16 12:29:28 +00002645 to des_cblock * (meaning pointer to array with 8 char elements),
2646 which allows the compiler to do more typechecking; it was like
2647 that back in SSLeay, but with lots of ugly casts.
2648
2649 Introduce new type const_des_cblock.
2650 [Bodo Moeller]
2651
Dr. Stephen Henson84fa7041999-05-16 00:25:36 +00002652 *) Reorganise the PKCS#7 library and get rid of some of the more obvious
2653 problems: find RecipientInfo structure that matches recipient certificate
2654 and initialise the ASN1 structures properly based on passed cipher.
2655 [Steve Henson]
2656
Ben Laurie62bad771999-05-15 15:59:28 +00002657 *) Belatedly make the BN tests actually check the results.
2658 [Ben Laurie]
2659
Dr. Stephen Henson1ad2ecb1999-05-14 18:21:21 +00002660 *) Fix the encoding and decoding of negative ASN1 INTEGERS and conversion
2661 to and from BNs: it was completely broken. New compilation option
2662 NEG_PUBKEY_BUG to allow for some broken certificates that encode public
2663 key elements as negative integers.
2664 [Steve Henson]
2665
Ulf Möllerbd3576d1999-05-13 13:16:42 +00002666 *) Reorganize and speed up MD5.
2667 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2668
Ulf Möller7d7d2cb1999-05-13 11:37:32 +00002669 *) VMS support.
2670 [Richard Levitte <richard@levitte.org>]
2671
Dr. Stephen Hensonf5eac851999-05-12 01:56:27 +00002672 *) New option -out to asn1parse to allow the parsed structure to be
2673 output to a file. This is most useful when combined with the -strparse
2674 option to examine the output of things like OCTET STRINGS.
2675 [Steve Henson]
2676
Bodo Möllerb31b04d1999-05-11 07:43:16 +00002677 *) Make SSL library a little more fool-proof by not requiring any longer
2678 that SSL_set_{accept,connect}_state be called before
2679 SSL_{accept,connect} may be used (SSL_set_..._state is omitted
2680 in many applications because usually everything *appeared* to work as
2681 intended anyway -- now it really works as intended).
2682 [Bodo Moeller]
2683
Ulf Möllerd5a2ea41999-05-10 23:59:28 +00002684 *) Move openssl.cnf out of lib/.
2685 [Ulf Möller]
2686
Ralf S. Engelschall397f7031999-05-10 08:33:56 +00002687 *) Fix various things to let OpenSSL even pass ``egcc -pipe -O2 -Wall
2688 -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wmissing-prototypes
2689 -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -Winline'' with EGCS 1.1.2+
2690 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2691
Dr. Stephen Henson884e8ec1999-05-10 00:47:42 +00002692 *) Various fixes to the EVP and PKCS#7 code. It may now be able to
2693 handle PKCS#7 enveloped data properly.
2694 [Sebastian Akerman <sak@parallelconsulting.com>, modified by Steve]
2695
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002696 *) Create a duplicate of the SSL_CTX's CERT in SSL_new instead of
2697 copying pointers. The cert_st handling is changed by this in
2698 various ways (and thus what used to be known as ctx->default_cert
2699 is now called ctx->cert, since we don't resort to s->ctx->[default_]cert
2700 any longer when s->cert does not give us what we need).
2701 ssl_cert_instantiate becomes obsolete by this change.
2702 As soon as we've got the new code right (possibly it already is?),
2703 we have solved a couple of bugs of the earlier code where s->cert
2704 was used as if it could not have been shared with other SSL structures.
2705
2706 Note that using the SSL API in certain dirty ways now will result
2707 in different behaviour than observed with earlier library versions:
2708 Changing settings for an SSL_CTX *ctx after having done s = SSL_new(ctx)
2709 does not influence s as it used to.

Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002711 In order to clean up things more thoroughly, inside SSL_SESSION
Bodo Möllerb56bce41999-05-13 15:09:38 +00002712 we don't use CERT any longer, but a new structure SESS_CERT
2713 that holds per-session data (if available); currently, this is
2714 the peer's certificate chain and, for clients, the server's certificate
2715 and temporary key. CERT holds only those values that can have
2716 meaningful defaults in an SSL_CTX.
Bodo Möllerca8e5b91999-05-09 20:12:44 +00002717 [Bodo Moeller]
2718
Dr. Stephen Hensonc8b41851999-05-09 16:39:11 +00002719 *) New function X509V3_EXT_i2d() to create an X509_EXTENSION structure
2720 from the internal representation. Various PKCS#7 fixes: remove some
2721 evil casts and set the enc_dig_alg field properly based on the signing
2722 key type.
2723 [Steve Henson]
2724
Dr. Stephen Hensone40b7ab1999-05-08 12:59:50 +00002725 *) Allow PKCS#12 password to be set from the command line or the
2726 environment. Let 'ca' get its config file name from the environment
2727 variables "OPENSSL_CONF" or "SSLEAY_CONF" (for consistency with 'req'
2728 and 'x509').
2729 [Steve Henson]
2730
2731 *) Allow certificate policies extension to use an IA5STRING for the
2732 organization field. This is contrary to the PKIX definition but
2733 VeriSign uses it and IE5 only recognises this form. Document 'x509'
2734 extension option.
2735 [Steve Henson]
2736
Ben Laurie5b640021999-05-07 15:42:23 +00002737 *) Add PEDANTIC compiler flag to allow compilation with gcc -pedantic,
2738 without disallowing inline assembler and the like for non-pedantic builds.
2739 [Ben Laurie]
2740
Ulf Möller31a674d1999-05-06 00:46:34 +00002741 *) Support Borland C++ builder.
2742 [Janez Jere <jj@void.si>, modified by Ulf Möller]
2743
2744 *) Support Mingw32.
2745 [Ulf Möller]
2746
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002747 *) SHA-1 cleanups and performance enhancements.
2748 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2749
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002750 *) Sparc v8plus assembler for the bignum library.
Ulf Möller8e7f9661999-05-05 00:23:53 +00002751 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
Ulf Möller4f5fac81999-05-04 20:35:18 +00002752
Ulf Möllerafd1f9e1999-05-04 11:52:26 +00002753 *) Accept any -xxx and +xxx compiler options in Configure.
2754 [Ulf Möller]
2755
2756 *) Update HPUX configuration.
2757 [Anonymous]
2758
Ralf S. Engelschalldee75ec1999-05-04 10:15:02 +00002759 *) Add missing sk_<type>_unshift() function to safestack.h
2760 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2761
Bodo Möllerb3ca6451999-05-01 17:43:52 +00002762 *) New function SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file that sets the
2763 "extra_cert"s in addition to the certificate. (This makes sense
2764 only for "PEM" format files, as chains as a whole are not
2765 DER-encoded.)
2766 [Bodo Moeller]
2767
Bodo Möller7f897141999-05-01 03:20:40 +00002768 *) Support verify_depth from the SSL API.
2769 x509_vfy.c had what can be considered an off-by-one-error:
2770 Its depth (which was not part of the external interface)
2771 was actually counting the number of certificates in a chain;
2772 now it really counts the depth.
2773 [Bodo Moeller]
2774
Bodo Möllerdc1f6071999-05-01 20:16:35 +00002775 *) Bugfix in crypto/x509/x509_cmp.c: The SSLerr macro was used
2776 instead of X509err, which often resulted in confusing error
2777 messages since the error codes are not globally unique
2778 (e.g. an alleged error in ssl3_accept when a certificate
2779 didn't match the private key).
2780
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002781 *) New function SSL_CTX_set_session_id_context that allows to set a default
Bodo Möllerdd1462f1999-05-01 00:07:42 +00002782 value (so that you don't need SSL_set_session_id_context for each
2783 connection using the SSL_CTX).
Bodo Möller4eb77b21999-04-30 17:15:56 +00002784 [Bodo Moeller]
2785
Ulf Möllerc6652741999-04-29 21:56:13 +00002786 *) OAEP decoding bug fix.
2787 [Ulf Möller]
2788
Bodo Möllere5f30451999-04-29 21:52:08 +00002789 *) Support INSTALL_PREFIX for package builders, as proposed by
2790 David Harris.
2791 [Bodo Moeller]
2792
Bodo Möller87bc2c01999-04-29 16:10:41 +00002793 *) New Configure options "threads" and "no-threads". For systems
2794 where the proper compiler options are known (currently Solaris
2795 and Linux), "threads" is the default.
2796 [Bodo Moeller]
2797
Bodo Möller6e6acfd1999-04-28 22:33:54 +00002798 *) New script util/mklink.pl as a faster substitute for util/mklink.sh.
2799 [Bodo Moeller]
2800
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002801 *) Install various scripts to $(OPENSSLDIR)/misc, not to
2802 $(INSTALLTOP)/bin -- they shouldn't clutter directories
2803 such as /usr/local/bin.
2804 [Bodo Moeller]
2805
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002806 *) "make linux-shared" to build shared libraries.
Bodo Möllerddeee821999-04-28 22:06:19 +00002807 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller09739101999-04-28 16:16:31 +00002808
Ulf Möllerf5d7a031999-04-27 01:14:46 +00002809 *) New Configure option no-<cipher> (rsa, idea, rc5, ...).
2810 [Ulf Möller]
2811
Dr. Stephen Hensonb64f8251999-04-27 00:36:20 +00002812 *) Add the PKCS#12 API documentation to openssl.txt. Preliminary support for
2813 extension adding in x509 utility.
2814 [Steve Henson]
2815
Ulf Möllera9be3af1999-04-26 16:43:10 +00002816 *) Remove NOPROTO sections and error code comments.
2817 [Ulf Möller]
2818
Dr. Stephen Henson47339f61999-04-26 00:23:10 +00002819 *) Partial rewrite of the DEF file generator to now parse the ANSI
2820 prototypes.
2821 [Steve Henson]
2822
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002823 *) New Configure options --prefix=DIR and --openssldir=DIR.
Ulf Möller9c4711c1999-04-24 23:39:52 +00002824 [Ulf Möller]
Ulf Möllerb0b7b1c1999-04-24 23:01:36 +00002825
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002826 *) Complete rewrite of the error code script(s). It is all now handled
2827 by one script at the top level which handles error code gathering,
2828 header rewriting and C source file generation. It should be much better
2829 than the old method: it now uses a modified version of Ulf's parser to
2830 read the ANSI prototypes in all header files (thus the old K&R definitions
2831 aren't needed for error creation any more) and do a better job of
2832 translating function codes into names. The old 'ASN1 error code imbedded
2833 in a comment' is no longer necessary and it doesn't use .err files which
Dr. Stephen Henson6e781e81999-04-24 13:28:57 +00002834 have now been deleted. Also the error code call doesn't have to appear all
2835 on one line (which resulted in some large lines...).
Dr. Stephen Henson6d311931999-04-24 00:15:18 +00002836 [Steve Henson]
2837
Bodo Möller018b4ee1999-04-23 22:38:22 +00002838 *) Change #include filenames from <foo.h> to <openssl/foo.h>.
Bodo Möller92df9601999-04-23 22:20:21 +00002839 [Bodo Moeller]
2840
Bodo Möller85f48f71999-04-22 14:28:38 +00002841 *) Change behaviour of ssl2_read when facing length-0 packets: Don't return
2842 0 (which usually indicates a closed connection), but continue reading.
2843 [Bodo Moeller]
2844
Bodo Möller90b8bbb1999-04-22 13:38:03 +00002845 *) Fix some race conditions.
2846 [Bodo Moeller]
2847
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002848 *) Add support for CRL distribution points extension. Add Certificate
2849 Policies and CRL distribution points documentation.
2850 [Steve Henson]
2851
Ulf Möller8e10f2b1999-04-21 17:31:05 +00002852 *) Move the autogenerated header file parts to crypto/opensslconf.h.
2853 [Ulf Möller]
2854
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002855 *) Fix new 56-bit DES export ciphersuites: they were using 7 bytes instead of
2856 8 of keying material. Merlin has also confirmed interop with this fix
2857 between OpenSSL and Baltimore C/SSL 2.0 and J/SSL 2.0.
2858 [Merlin Hughes <merlin@baltimore.ie>]
2859
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002860 *) Fix lots of warnings.
2861 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
2862
2863 *) In add_cert_dir() in crypto/x509/by_dir.c, break out of the loop if
2864 the directory spec didn't end with a LIST_SEPARATOR_CHAR.
Ben Laurie49971381999-04-21 13:24:58 +00002865 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
Ulf Möller95dc05b1999-04-20 22:50:42 +00002866
Ulf Möller8fb04b91999-04-20 16:23:03 +00002867 *) Fix problems with sizeof(long) == 8.
2868 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2869
Ulf Möller6b691a51999-04-19 21:31:43 +00002870 *) Change functions to ANSI C.
2871 [Ulf Möller]
2872
Ulf Möllerdf82f5c1999-04-19 14:45:02 +00002873 *) Fix typos in error codes.
2874 [Martin Kraemer <Martin.Kraemer@MchP.Siemens.De>, Ulf Möller]
2875
Ulf Möller22a4f961999-04-19 13:54:11 +00002876 *) Remove defunct assembler files from Configure.
2877 [Ulf Möller]
2878
Ulf Möller5e85b6a1999-04-19 13:41:45 +00002879 *) SPARC v8 assembler BIGNUM implementation.
2880 [Andy Polyakov <appro@fy.chalmers.se>]
2881
Dr. Stephen Henson3edd7ed1999-04-19 17:55:11 +00002882 *) Support for Certificate Policies extension: both print and set.
Dr. Stephen Hensond943e371999-04-21 17:44:45 +00002883 Various additions to support the r2i method this uses.
Dr. Stephen Henson41b731f1999-04-18 23:21:03 +00002884 [Steve Henson]
2885
Ben Lauriee7788021999-04-17 21:25:43 +00002886 *) A lot of constification, and fix a bug in X509_NAME_oneline() that could
2887 return a const string when you are expecting an allocated buffer.
2888 [Ben Laurie]
2889
Dr. Stephen Hensonc83e5231999-04-17 23:55:39 +00002890 *) Add support for ASN1 types UTF8String and VISIBLESTRING, also the CHOICE
2891 types DirectoryString and DisplayText.
Dr. Stephen Hensond77b3051999-04-17 15:53:32 +00002892 [Steve Henson]
2893
Dr. Stephen Henson1d48dd01999-04-16 23:57:04 +00002894 *) Add code to allow r2i extensions to access the configuration database,
2895 add an LHASH database driver and add several ctx helper functions.
2896 [Steve Henson]
2897
Dr. Stephen Henson953937b1999-04-15 23:07:00 +00002898 *) Fix an evil bug in bn_expand2() which caused various BN functions to
2899 fail when they extended the size of a BIGNUM.
2900 [Steve Henson]
2901
Dr. Stephen Henson28a98801999-04-14 23:44:41 +00002902 *) Various utility functions to handle SXNet extension. Modify mkdef.pl to
2903 support typesafe stack.
2904 [Steve Henson]
2905
Ben Laurie8f7de4f1999-04-14 11:13:47 +00002906 *) Fix typo in SSL_[gs]et_options().
2907 [Nils Frostberg <nils@medcom.se>]
2908
Dr. Stephen Henson0490a861999-04-13 23:56:39 +00002909 *) Delete various functions and files that belonged to the (now obsolete)
2910 old X509V3 handling code.
2911 [Steve Henson]
2912
Ulf Möller5fbe91d1999-04-13 00:58:49 +00002913 *) New Configure option "rsaref".
2914 [Ulf Möller]
2915
Bodo Möller5fd4e2b1999-04-12 19:58:17 +00002916 *) Don't auto-generate pem.h.
2917 [Bodo Moeller]
2918
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00002919 *) Introduce type-safe ASN.1 SETs.
2920 [Ben Laurie]
2921
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002922 *) Convert various additional casted stacks to type-safe STACK_OF() variants.
Ben Laurie135a1dc1999-05-07 09:18:25 +00002923 [Ben Laurie, Ralf S. Engelschall, Steve Henson]
Ralf S. Engelschall9263e881999-05-04 10:27:10 +00002924
Ben Laurief73e07c1999-04-12 17:23:57 +00002925 *) Introduce type-safe STACKs. This will almost certainly break lots of code
2926 that links with OpenSSL (well at least cause lots of warnings), but fear
2927 not: the conversion is trivial, and it eliminates loads of evil casts. A
2928 few STACKed things have been converted already. Feel free to convert more.
2929 In the fullness of time, I'll do away with the STACK type altogether.
2930 [Ben Laurie]
2931
Ralf S. Engelschallf9a25931999-04-12 11:45:14 +00002932 *) Add `openssl ca -revoke <certfile>' facility which revokes a certificate
2933 specified in <certfile> by updating the entry in the index.txt file.
2934 This way one no longer has to edit the index.txt file manually for
2935 revoking a certificate. The -revoke option does the gory details now.
2936 [Massimiliano Pala <madwolf@openca.org>, Ralf S. Engelschall]
2937
Ralf S. Engelschall2f0cd191999-04-12 10:36:16 +00002938 *) Fix `openssl crl -noout -text' combination where `-noout' killed the
2939 `-text' option at all and this way the `-noout -text' combination was
2940 inconsistent in `openssl crl' with the friends in `openssl x509|rsa|dsa'.
2941 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2942
Ralf S. Engelschall268c2101999-04-12 09:59:05 +00002943 *) Make sure a corresponding plain text error message exists for the
2944 X509_V_ERR_CERT_REVOKED/23 error number which can occur when a
2945 verify callback function determined that a certificate was revoked.
2946 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
2947
Bodo Möllerfc8ee061999-04-11 02:49:35 +00002948 *) Bugfix: In test/testenc, don't test "openssl <cipher>" for
2949 ciphers that were excluded, e.g. by -DNO_IDEA. Also, test
2950 all available cipers including rc5, which was forgotten until now.
2951 In order to let the testing shell script know which algorithms
2952 are available, a new (up to now undocumented) command
2953 "openssl list-cipher-commands" is used.
2954 [Bodo Moeller]
2955
Bodo Möllerc7ac31e1999-04-09 20:54:25 +00002956 *) Bugfix: s_client occasionally would sleep in select() when
2957 it should have checked SSL_pending() first.
2958 [Bodo Moeller]
2959
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002960 *) New functions DSA_do_sign and DSA_do_verify to provide access to
2961 the raw DSA values prior to ASN.1 encoding.
2962 [Ulf Möller]
2963
2964 *) Tweaks to Configure
Bodo Möller748365e1999-05-31 21:58:18 +00002965 [Niels Poppe <niels@netbox.org>]
Ulf Möller9d892e21999-04-09 17:04:32 +00002966
Dr. Stephen Hensond2e26dc1999-04-08 23:55:42 +00002967 *) Add support for PKCS#5 v2.0 ASN1 PBES2 structures. No other support,
2968 yet...
2969 [Steve Henson]
2970
Ulf Möller99aab161999-04-01 12:34:33 +00002971 *) New variables $(RANLIB) and $(PERL) in the Makefiles.
2972 [Ulf Möller]
2973
Ulf Möller2613c1f1999-03-31 12:38:27 +00002974 *) New config option to avoid instructions that are illegal on the 80386.
2975 The default code is faster, but requires at least a 486.
2976 [Ulf Möller]
2977
Bodo Möller6d02d8e1999-03-31 12:06:30 +00002978 *) Got rid of old SSL2_CLIENT_VERSION (inconsistently used) and
2979 SSL2_SERVER_VERSION (not used at all) macros, which are now the
2980 same as SSL2_VERSION anyway.
2981 [Bodo Moeller]
2982
2983 *) New "-showcerts" option for s_client.
2984 [Bodo Moeller]
2985
Dr. Stephen Hensonee0508d1999-03-29 17:50:26 +00002986 *) Still more PKCS#12 integration. Add pkcs12 application to openssl
2987 application. Various cleanups and fixes.
2988 [Steve Henson]
2989
Dr. Stephen Henson8d8c7261999-03-28 23:17:34 +00002990 *) More PKCS#12 integration. Add new pkcs12 directory with Makefile.ssl and
2991 modify error routines to work internally. Add error codes and PBE init
2992 to library startup routines.
2993 [Steve Henson]
2994
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00002995 *) Further PKCS#12 integration. Added password based encryption, PKCS#8 and
2996 packing functions to asn1 and evp. Changed function names and error
2997 codes along the way.
2998 [Steve Henson]
2999
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00003000 *) PKCS12 integration: and so it begins... First of several patches to
3001 slowly integrate PKCS#12 functionality into OpenSSL. Add PKCS#12
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcefcb1999-03-28 17:46:10 +00003002 objects to objects.h
Dr. Stephen Henson4b518c21999-03-28 01:00:56 +00003003 [Steve Henson]
3004
Dr. Stephen Henson785cdf21999-03-27 14:06:25 +00003005 *) Add a new 'indent' option to some X509V3 extension code. Initial ASN1
3006 and display support for Thawte strong extranet extension.
3007 [Steve Henson]
3008
Ben Laurieba423ad1999-03-27 13:03:37 +00003009 *) Add LinuxPPC support.
3010 [Jeff Dubrule <igor@pobox.org>]
3011
Ben Laurie67da3df1999-03-27 12:53:21 +00003012 *) Get rid of redundant BN file bn_mulw.c, and rename bn_div64 to
3013 bn_div_words in alpha.s.
3014 [Hannes Reinecke <H.Reinecke@hw.ac.uk> and Ben Laurie]
3015
Ralf S. Engelschall0e9fc711999-03-25 07:49:33 +00003016 *) Make sure the RSA OAEP test is skipped under -DRSAref because
3017 OAEP isn't supported when OpenSSL is built with RSAref.
3018 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3019
Ralf S. Engelschall1b276f31999-03-24 10:24:35 +00003020 *) Move definitions of IS_SET/IS_SEQUENCE inside crypto/asn1/asn1.h
3021 so they no longer are missing under -DNOPROTO.
3022 [Soren S. Jorvang <soren@t.dk>]
3023
Bodo Möller1b24cca1999-05-13 21:17:03 +00003024

Ben Laurieb4cadc61999-03-22 12:22:14 +00003027 *) Make SSL_get_peer_cert_chain() work in servers. Unfortunately, it still
3028 doesn't work when the session is reused. Coming soon!
3029 [Ben Laurie]
3030
3031 *) Fix a security hole, that allows sessions to be reused in the wrong
3032 context thus bypassing client cert protection! All software that uses
3033 client certs and session caches in multiple contexts NEEDS PATCHING to
3034 allow session reuse! A fuller solution is in the works.
3035 [Ben Laurie, problem pointed out by Holger Reif, Bodo Moeller (and ???)]
3036
Ralf S. Engelschallafb23061999-03-20 13:04:12 +00003037 *) Some more source tree cleanups (removed obsolete files
3038 crypto/bf/asm/bf586.pl, test/test.txt and crypto/sha/asm/f.s; changed
3039 permission on "config" script to be executable) and a fix for the INSTALL
3040 document.
3041 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3042
Dr. Stephen Henson199d59e1999-03-14 01:16:45 +00003043 *) Remove some legacy and erroneous uses of malloc, free instead of
3044 Malloc, Free.
3045 [Lennart Bang <lob@netstream.se>, with minor changes by Steve]
3046
Ben Laurieb4899bb1999-03-12 20:41:09 +00003047 *) Make rsa_oaep_test return non-zero on error.
3048 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3049
Ben Laurie29c0fcc1999-03-12 20:26:27 +00003050 *) Add support for native Solaris shared libraries. Configure
3051 solaris-sparc-sc4-pic, make, then run shlib/solaris-sc4.sh. It'd be nice
3052 if someone would make that last step automatic.
3053 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@AdNovum.CH>]
3054
Ben Lauriecadf1261999-03-12 19:58:43 +00003055 *) ctx_size was not built with the right compiler during "make links". Fixed.
3056 [Ben Laurie]
3057
Dr. Stephen Hensonbc420ac1999-03-12 01:43:28 +00003058 *) Change the meaning of 'ALL' in the cipher list. It now means "everything
3059 except NULL ciphers". This means the default cipher list will no longer
3060 enable NULL ciphers. They need to be specifically enabled e.g. with
3061 the string "DEFAULT:eNULL".
3062 [Steve Henson]
3063
Dr. Stephen Hensonabd4c911999-03-11 02:42:13 +00003064 *) Fix to RSA private encryption routines: if p < q then it would
3065 occasionally produce an invalid result. This will only happen with
3066 externally generated keys because OpenSSL (and SSLeay) ensure p > q.
3067 [Steve Henson]
3068
Ralf S. Engelschall7e37e721999-03-10 19:57:05 +00003069 *) Be less restrictive and allow also `perl util/perlpath.pl
3070 /path/to/bin/perl' in addition to `perl util/perlpath.pl /path/to/bin',
3071 because this way one can also use an interpreter named `perl5' (which is
3072 usually the name of Perl 5.xxx on platforms where an Perl 4.x is still
3073 installed as `perl').
3074 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
3075
Ralf S. Engelschall637691e1999-03-10 19:51:43 +00003076 *) Let util/clean-depend.pl work also with older Perl 5.00x versions.
3077 [Matthias Loepfe <Matthias.Loepfe@adnovum.ch>]
3078
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00003079 *) Fix Makefile.org so CC,CFLAG etc are passed to 'make links' add
3080 advapi32.lib to Win32 build and change the pem test comparision
3081 to fc.exe (thanks to Ulrich Kroener <kroneru@yahoo.com> for the
Dr. Stephen Henson38138021999-03-10 18:30:48 +00003082 suggestion). Fix misplaced ASNI prototypes and declarations in evp.h
3083 and crypto/des/ede_cbcm_enc.c.
3084 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson83ec54b1999-03-10 01:37:33 +00003085
Ben Laurieb241fef1999-03-09 11:37:23 +00003086 *) DES quad checksum was broken on big-endian architectures. Fixed.
3087 [Ben Laurie]
3088
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00003089 *) Comment out two functions in bio.h that aren't implemented. Fix up the
3090 Win32 test batch file so it (might) work again. The Win32 test batch file
3091 is horrible: I feel ill....
3092 [Steve Henson]
3093
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00003094 *) Move various #ifdefs around so NO_SYSLOG, NO_DIRENT etc are now selected
3095 in e_os.h. Audit of header files to check ANSI and non ANSI
3096 sections: 10 functions were absent from non ANSI section and not exported
3097 from Windows DLLs. Fixed up libeay.num for new functions.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00003098 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson0cc39571999-03-08 22:46:56 +00003099
Ralf S. Engelschalld10f0521999-03-08 12:35:01 +00003100 *) Make `openssl version' output lines consistent.
3101 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3102
Ralf S. Engelschallc0e538e1999-03-08 11:41:26 +00003103 *) Fix Win32 symbol export lists for BIO functions: Added
3104 BIO_get_ex_new_index, BIO_get_ex_num, BIO_get_ex_data and BIO_set_ex_data
3105 to ms/libeay{16,32}.def.
3106 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3107
Ralf S. Engelschall84107e61999-03-08 11:25:49 +00003108 *) Second round of fixing the OpenSSL perl/ stuff. It now at least compiled
3109 fine under Unix and passes some trivial tests I've now added. But the
3110 whole stuff is horribly incomplete, so a README.1ST with a disclaimer was
3111 added to make sure no one expects that this stuff really works in the
3112 OpenSSL 0.9.2 release. Additionally I've started to clean the XS sources
3113 up and fixed a few little bugs and inconsistencies in OpenSSL.{pm,xs} and
3114 openssl_bio.xs.
3115 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3116
Ben Laurie26a08461999-03-07 15:08:38 +00003117 *) Fix the generation of two part addresses in perl.
3118 [Kenji Miyake <kenji@miyake.org>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
3119
Ben Laurie7d3ce7b1999-03-07 14:17:32 +00003120 *) Add config entry for Linux on MIPS.
3121 [John Tobey <jtobey@channel1.com>]
3122
Ben Laurieefadf601999-03-07 15:21:08 +00003123 *) Make links whenever Configure is run, unless we are on Windoze.
Ben Lauriecba50681999-03-07 14:05:36 +00003124 [Ben Laurie]
3125
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00003126 *) Permit extensions to be added to CRLs using crl_section in openssl.cnf.
3127 Currently only issuerAltName and AuthorityKeyIdentifier make any sense
3128 in CRLs.
Dr. Stephen Hensond4d2f981999-03-09 03:01:48 +00003129 [Steve Henson]
Dr. Stephen Henson1756d401999-03-06 19:33:29 +00003130
Ralf S. Engelschall116e3151999-03-06 16:07:47 +00003131 *) Add a useful kludge to allow package maintainers to specify compiler and
3132 other platforms details on the command line without having to patch the
3133 Configure script everytime: One now can use ``perl Configure
3134 <id>:<details>'', i.e. platform ids are allowed to have details appended
3135 to them (seperated by colons). This is treated as there would be a static
3136 pre-configured entry in Configure's %table under key <id> with value
3137 <details> and ``perl Configure <id>'' is called. So, when you want to
3138 perform a quick test-compile under FreeBSD 3.1 with pgcc and without
3139 assembler stuff you can use ``perl Configure "FreeBSD-elf:pgcc:-O6:::"''
3140 now, which overrides the FreeBSD-elf entry on-the-fly.
3141 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3142
Ben Lauriebc348241999-03-06 15:21:02 +00003143 *) Disable new TLS1 ciphersuites by default: they aren't official yet.
3144 [Ben Laurie]
3145
Ralf S. Engelschall3eb0ed61999-03-06 14:35:03 +00003146 *) Allow DSO flags like -fpic, -fPIC, -KPIC etc. to be specified
3147 on the `perl Configure ...' command line. This way one can compile
3148 OpenSSL libraries with Position Independent Code (PIC) which is needed
3149 for linking it into DSOs.
3150 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3151
Ben Laurief415fa31999-03-06 14:09:36 +00003152 *) Remarkably, export ciphers were totally broken and no-one had noticed!
3153 Fixed.
3154 [Ben Laurie]
3155
Ralf S. Engelschall0b903ec1999-03-06 13:29:09 +00003156 *) Cleaned up the LICENSE document: The official contact for any license
3157 questions now is the OpenSSL core team under openssl-core@openssl.org.
3158 And add a paragraph about the dual-license situation to make sure people
3159 recognize that _BOTH_ the OpenSSL license _AND_ the SSLeay license apply
3160 to the OpenSSL toolkit.
3161 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3162
Ralf S. Engelschallbb8f3c51999-03-06 12:32:06 +00003163 *) General source tree makefile cleanups: Made `making xxx in yyy...'
3164 display consistent in the source tree and replaced `/bin/rm' by `rm'.
3165 Additonally cleaned up the `make links' target: Remove unnecessary
3166 semicolons, subsequent redundant removes, inline point.sh into mklink.sh
3167 to speed processing and no longer clutter the display with confusing
3168 stuff. Instead only the actually done links are displayed.
3169 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3170
Ben Laurie988788f1999-03-06 12:09:36 +00003171 *) Permit null encryption ciphersuites, used for authentication only. It used
3172 to be necessary to set the preprocessor define SSL_ALLOW_ENULL to do this.
3173 It is now necessary to set SSL_FORBID_ENULL to prevent the use of null
3174 encryption.
3175 [Ben Laurie]
3176
Dr. Stephen Henson924acc51999-03-05 02:05:15 +00003177 *) Add a bunch of fixes to the PKCS#7 stuff. It used to sometimes reorder
3178 signed attributes when verifying signatures (this would break them),
3179 the detached data encoding was wrong and public keys obtained using
3180 X509_get_pubkey() weren't freed.
3181 [Steve Henson]
3182
Dr. Stephen Hensond00b7aa1999-03-05 01:07:04 +00003183 *) Add text documentation for the BUFFER functions. Also added a work around
3184 to a Win95 console bug. This was triggered by the password read stuff: the
3185 last character typed gets carried over to the next fread(). If you were
3186 generating a new cert request using 'req' for example then the last
3187 character of the passphrase would be CR which would then enter the first
3188 field as blank.
Dr. Stephen Henson9985bed1999-03-04 23:29:51 +00003189 [Steve Henson]
3190
Ralf S. Engelschall789285a1999-03-04 12:55:42 +00003191 *) Added the new `Includes OpenSSL Cryptography Software' button as
3192 doc/openssl_button.{gif,html} which is similar in style to the old SSLeay
3193 button and can be used by applications based on OpenSSL to show the
3194 relationship to the OpenSSL project.
3195 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3196
Ralf S. Engelschalla06c6021999-03-04 07:54:01 +00003197 *) Remove confusing variables in function signatures in files
3198 ssl/ssl_lib.c and ssl/ssl.h.
3199 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
3200
Ralf S. Engelschall8d697db1999-03-04 07:47:27 +00003201 *) Don't install bss_file.c under PREFIX/include/
3202 [Lennart Bong <lob@kulthea.stacken.kth.se>]
3203
Dr. Stephen Henson06c68491999-03-03 02:01:26 +00003204 *) Get the Win32 compile working again. Modify mkdef.pl so it can handle
3205 functions that return function pointers and has support for NT specific
3206 stuff. Fix mk1mf.pl and VC-32.pl to support NT differences also. Various
3207 #ifdef WIN32 and WINNTs sprinkled about the place and some changes from
3208 unsigned to signed types: this was killing the Win32 compile.
3209 [Steve Henson]
3210
Ralf S. Engelschall72e442a1999-03-22 15:50:34 +00003211 *) Add new certificate file to stack functions,
3212 SSL_add_dir_cert_subjects_to_stack() and
3213 SSL_add_file_cert_subjects_to_stack(). These largely supplant
3214 SSL_load_client_CA_file(), and can be used to add multiple certs easily
3215 to a stack (usually this is then handed to SSL_CTX_set_client_CA_list()).
Ben Laurieeb90a481999-02-28 17:41:55 +00003216 This means that Apache-SSL and similar packages don't have to mess around
3217 to add as many CAs as they want to the preferred list.
3218 [Ben Laurie]
3219
Ben Laurie4f43d0e1999-02-28 12:41:50 +00003220 *) Experiment with doxygen documentation. Currently only partially applied to
3221 ssl/ssl_lib.c.
3222 See http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/index.html, and run doxygen with
3223 openssl.doxy as the configuration file.
3224 [Ben Laurie]
Ralf S. Engelschall74d7abc1999-02-27 12:17:40 +00003225
3226 *) Get rid of remaining C++-style comments which strict C compilers hate.
3227 [Ralf S. Engelschall, pointed out by Carlos Amengual]
Ralf S. Engelschall0172f981999-01-30 11:36:05 +00003228
Dr. Stephen Henson7283ece1999-02-26 01:37:34 +00003229 *) Changed BN_RECURSION in bn_mont.c to BN_RECURSION_MONT so it is not
3230 compiled in by default: it has problems with large keys.
3231 [Steve Henson]
3232
Ralf S. Engelschall15d21c21999-02-25 14:40:29 +00003233 *) Add a bunch of SSL_xxx() functions for configuring the temporary RSA and
3234 DH private keys and/or callback functions which directly correspond to
3235 their SSL_CTX_xxx() counterparts but work on a per-connection basis. This
3236 is needed for applications which have to configure certificates on a
3237 per-connection basis (e.g. Apache+mod_ssl) instead of a per-context basis
3238 (e.g. s_server).
3239 For the RSA certificate situation is makes no difference, but
3240 for the DSA certificate situation this fixes the "no shared cipher"
3241 problem where the OpenSSL cipher selection procedure failed because the
3242 temporary keys were not overtaken from the context and the API provided
3243 no way to reconfigure them.
3244 The new functions now let applications reconfigure the stuff and they
3245 are in detail: SSL_need_tmp_RSA, SSL_set_tmp_rsa, SSL_set_tmp_dh,
3246 SSL_set_tmp_rsa_callback and SSL_set_tmp_dh_callback. Additionally a new
3247 non-public-API function ssl_cert_instantiate() is used as a helper
3248 function and also to reduce code redundancy inside ssl_rsa.c.
3249 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3250
Ralf S. Engelschallea14a911999-02-25 11:26:26 +00003251 *) Move s_server -dcert and -dkey options out of the undocumented feature
3252 area because they are useful for the DSA situation and should be
3253 recognized by the users.
3254 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3255
Ralf S. Engelschall90a52ce1999-02-25 11:03:18 +00003256 *) Fix the cipher decision scheme for export ciphers: the export bits are
3257 *not* within SSL_MKEY_MASK or SSL_AUTH_MASK, they are within
3258 SSL_EXP_MASK. So, the original variable has to be used instead of the
3259 already masked variable.
3260 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3261
Ralf S. Engelschalldef9f431999-02-25 10:54:27 +00003262 *) Fix 'port' variable from `int' to `unsigned int' in crypto/bio/b_sock.c
3263 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3264
Ralf S. Engelschall8aef2521999-02-25 10:47:24 +00003265 *) Change type of another md_len variable in pk7_doit.c:PKCS7_dataFinal()
3266 from `int' to `unsigned int' because it's a length and initialized by
3267 EVP_DigestFinal() which expects an `unsigned int *'.
3268 [Richard Levitte <levitte@stacken.kth.se>]
3269
Ralf S. Engelschalla4ed5531999-02-25 08:48:52 +00003270 *) Don't hard-code path to Perl interpreter on shebang line of Configure
3271 script. Instead use the usual Shell->Perl transition trick.
3272 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3273
Ralf S. Engelschall7be304a1999-02-24 17:17:31 +00003274 *) Make `openssl x509 -noout -modulus' functional also for DSA certificates
3275 (in addition to RSA certificates) to match the behaviour of `openssl dsa
3276 -noout -modulus' as it's already the case for `openssl rsa -noout
3277 -modulus'. For RSA the -modulus is the real "modulus" while for DSA
3278 currently the public key is printed (a decision which was already done by
3279 `openssl dsa -modulus' in the past) which serves a similar purpose.
3280 Additionally the NO_RSA no longer completely removes the whole -modulus
3281 option; it now only avoids using the RSA stuff. Same applies to NO_DSA
3282 now, too.
3283 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3284
Ben Laurie55ab3bf1999-02-23 21:44:34 +00003285 *) Add Arne Ansper's reliable BIO - this is an encrypted, block-digested
3286 BIO. See the source (crypto/evp/bio_ok.c) for more info.
3287 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>]
3288
Dr. Stephen Hensona43aa731999-02-23 00:07:46 +00003289 *) Dump the old yucky req code that tried (and failed) to allow raw OIDs
3290 to be added. Now both 'req' and 'ca' can use new objects defined in the
3291 config file.
3292 [Steve Henson]
3293
Ben Laurie0849d131999-02-22 21:21:08 +00003294 *) Add cool BIO that does syslog (or event log on NT).
3295 [Arne Ansper <arne@ats.cyber.ee>, integrated by Ben Laurie]
3296
Ben Laurie06ab81f1999-02-21 20:03:24 +00003297 *) Add support for new TLS ciphersuites, TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC4_56_MD5,
3298 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_RC2_CBC_56_MD5 and
3299 TLS_RSA_EXPORT56_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA, as specified in "56-bit Export Cipher
3300 Suites For TLS", draft-ietf-tls-56-bit-ciphersuites-00.txt.
3301 [Ben Laurie]
3302
Dr. Stephen Hensondeff75b1999-02-21 17:41:08 +00003303 *) Add preliminary config info for new extension code.
3304 [Steve Henson]
3305
Dr. Stephen Henson0c8a1281999-02-21 17:39:07 +00003306 *) Make RSA_NO_PADDING really use no padding.
3307 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>]
3308
Ben Laurie4004dbb1999-02-20 11:50:07 +00003309 *) Generate errors when private/public key check is done.
3310 [Ben Laurie]
3311
Dr. Stephen Henson0ca5f8b1999-02-19 01:29:29 +00003312 *) Overhaul for 'crl' utility. New function X509_CRL_print. Partial support
3313 for some CRL extensions and new objects added.
3314 [Steve Henson]
3315
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00003316 *) Really fix the ASN1 IMPLICIT bug this time... Partial support for private
3317 key usage extension and fuller support for authority key id.
3318 [Steve Henson]
3319
Ben Lauriea4949891999-02-17 21:11:08 +00003320 *) Add OAEP encryption for the OpenSSL crypto library. OAEP is the improved
3321 padding method for RSA, which is recommended for new applications in PKCS
3322 #1 v2.0 (RFC 2437, October 1998).
3323 OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) has better theoretical
3324 foundations than the ad-hoc padding used in PKCS #1 v1.5. It is secure
3325 against Bleichbacher's attack on RSA.
3326 [Ulf Moeller <ulf@fitug.de>, reformatted, corrected and integrated by
3327 Ben Laurie]
3328
Mark J. Cox413c4f41999-02-16 09:22:21 +00003329 *) Updates to the new SSL compression code
3330 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3331
3332 *) Fix so that the version number in the master secret, when passed
3333 via RSA, checks that if TLS was proposed, but we roll back to SSLv3
3334 (because the server will not accept higher), that the version number
3335 is 0x03,0x01, not 0x03,0x00
3336 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3337
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003338 *) Run extensive memory leak checks on SSL apps. Fixed *lots* of memory
3339 leaks in ssl/ relating to new X509_get_pubkey() behaviour. Also fixes
Dr. Stephen Henson3d8accc1999-02-17 23:21:01 +00003340 in apps/ and an unrelated leak in crypto/dsa/dsa_vrf.c
Dr. Stephen Hensona8236c81999-02-15 21:05:21 +00003341 [Steve Henson]
3342
Dr. Stephen Henson388ff0b1999-02-14 16:48:22 +00003343 *) Support for RAW extensions where an arbitrary extension can be
3344 created by including its DER encoding. See apps/openssl.cnf for

Ralf S. Engelschall6013fa81999-02-14 13:21:52 +00003348 *) Make sure latest Perl versions don't interpret some generated C array
3349 code as Perl array code in the crypto/err/err_genc.pl script.
3350 [Lars Weber <3weber@informatik.uni-hamburg.de>]
3351
Dr. Stephen Henson5c008791999-02-14 00:40:13 +00003352 *) Modify ms/do_ms.bat to not generate assembly language makefiles since
3353 not many people have the assembler. Various Win32 compilation fixes and
3354 update to the INSTALL.W32 file with (hopefully) more accurate Win32
3355 build instructions.
3356 [Steve Henson]
3357
Dr. Stephen Henson9becf661999-02-13 23:13:32 +00003358 *) Modify configure script 'Configure' to automatically create crypto/date.h
3359 file under Win32 and also build pem.h from pem.org. New script
3360 util/mkfiles.pl to create the MINFO file on environments that can't do a
3361 'make files': perl util/mkfiles.pl >MINFO should work.
3362 [Steve Henson]
3363
Ben Laurie4e31df21999-02-13 18:52:38 +00003364 *) Major rework of DES function declarations, in the pursuit of correctness
3365 and purity. As a result, many evil casts evaporated, and some weirdness,
3366 too. You may find this causes warnings in your code. Zapping your evil
3367 casts will probably fix them. Mostly.
3368 [Ben Laurie]
3369
Dr. Stephen Hensone4119b91999-02-13 17:15:32 +00003370 *) Fix for a typo in asn1.h. Bug fix to object creation script
3371 obj_dat.pl. It considered a zero in an object definition to mean
3372 "end of object": none of the objects in objects.h have any zeros
3373 so it wasn't spotted.

3375
Ben Laurie4a71b901999-02-13 15:03:47 +00003376 *) Add support for Triple DES Cipher Block Chaining with Output Feedback
3377 Masking (CBCM). In the absence of test vectors, the best I have been able
3378 to do is check that the decrypt undoes the encrypt, so far. Send me test
3379 vectors if you have them.
3380 [Ben Laurie]
3381
Ralf S. Engelschall2c6ccde1999-03-06 14:01:29 +00003382 *) Correct calculation of key length for export ciphers (too much space was
Ben Laurie436d3181999-02-13 12:39:50 +00003383 allocated for null ciphers). This has not been tested!
3384 [Ben Laurie]
3385
Dr. Stephen Henson55a9cc61999-02-11 01:39:30 +00003386 *) Modifications to the mkdef.pl for Win32 DEF file creation. The usage
3387 message is now correct (it understands "crypto" and "ssl" on its
3388 command line). There is also now an "update" option. This will update
3389 the util/ssleay.num and util/libeay.num files with any new functions.
3390 If you do a:
3391 perl util/mkdef.pl crypto ssl update
3392 it will update them.

Ralf S. Engelschall80730361999-02-10 09:38:31 +00003395 *) Overhauled the Perl interface (perl/*):
3396 - ported BN stuff to OpenSSL's different BN library
3397 - made the perl/ source tree CVS-aware
3398 - renamed the package from SSLeay to OpenSSL (the files still contain
3399 their history because I've copied them in the repository)
3400 - removed obsolete files (the test scripts will be replaced
3401 by better Test::Harness variants in the future)
3402 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3403
Ralf S. Engelschall483fdf11999-02-10 08:34:01 +00003404 *) First cut for a very conservative source tree cleanup:
3405 1. merge various obsolete readme texts into doc/ssleay.txt
3406 where we collect the old documents and readme texts.
3407 2. remove the first part of files where I'm already sure that we no
3408 longer need them because of three reasons: either they are just temporary
3409 files which were left by Eric or they are preserved original files where
3410 I've verified that the diff is also available in the CVS via "cvs diff
3411 -rSSLeay_0_8_1b" or they were renamed (as it was definitely the case for
3412 the crypto/md/ stuff).
3413 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3414
Dr. Stephen Henson175b0941999-02-10 01:12:59 +00003415 *) More extension code. Incomplete support for subject and issuer alt
3416 name, issuer and authority key id. Change the i2v function parameters
3417 and add an extra 'crl' parameter in the X509V3_CTX structure: guess
3418 what that's for :-) Fix to ASN1 macro which messed up
3419 IMPLICIT tag and add f_enum.c which adds a2i, i2a for ENUMERATED.
3420 [Steve Henson]
3421
Dr. Stephen Hensonbceacf91999-02-09 01:29:37 +00003422 *) Preliminary support for ENUMERATED type. This is largely copied from the

3434 [Ben Laurie]
3435
Ralf S. Engelschalle04a6c21999-01-30 11:50:48 +00003436 *) Add CygWin32 platform information to Configure script.

3447 [Steve Henson]
3448
Mark J. Coxa0a54071999-01-28 10:40:38 +00003449 *) Fixes to BN code. Previously the default was to define BN_RECURSION

3452 [Eric A. Young, (from changes to C2Net SSLeay, integrated by Mark Cox)]
3453

Dr. Stephen Henson79dfa971999-01-29 23:34:19 +00003457 *) Add ASN1 and PEM code to support netscape certificate sequences.
3458 [Steve Henson]
3459
Dr. Stephen Hensona27598b1999-01-26 23:13:14 +00003460 *) Add several PKIX and private extended key usage OIDs.
3461 [Steve Henson]
3462
Dr. Stephen Hensonb2347661999-01-26 01:19:27 +00003463 *) Modify the 'ca' program to handle the new extension code. Modify
3464 openssl.cnf for new extension format, add comments.
3465 [Steve Henson]
3466
Dr. Stephen Hensonf317aa41999-01-25 01:09:21 +00003467 *) More X509 V3 changes. Fix typo in v3_bitstr.c. Add support to 'req'
3468 and add a sample to openssl.cnf so req -x509 now adds appropriate
3469 CA extensions.
3470 [Steve Henson]
3471
Dr. Stephen Henson834eeef1999-01-24 17:50:32 +00003472 *) Continued X509 V3 changes. Add to other makefiles, integrate with the

Dr. Stephen Henson9aeaf1b1999-01-24 00:50:01 +00003476 *) Takes a deep breath and start addding X509 V3 extension support code. Add
3477 files in crypto/x509v3. Move original stuff to crypto/x509v3/old. All this
3478 stuff is currently isolated and isn't even compiled yet.
3479 [Steve Henson]
3480
Dr. Stephen Henson9b5cc151999-01-20 00:14:40 +00003481 *) Continuing patches for GeneralizedTime. Fix up certificate and CRL
3482 ASN1 to use ASN1_TIME and modify print routines to use ASN1_TIME_print.
3483 Removed the versions check from X509 routines when loading extensions:
3484 this allows certain broken certificates that don't set the version
3485 properly to be processed.
3486 [Steve Henson]
3487
Ben Laurie80392571999-01-19 21:36:31 +00003488 *) Deal with irritating shit to do with dependencies, in YAAHW (Yet Another
3489 Ad Hoc Way) - Makefile.ssls now all contain local dependencies, which
3490 can still be regenerated with "make depend".
3491 [Ben Laurie]
3492
Ben Laurieb13a1551999-01-19 19:18:20 +00003493 *) Spelling mistake in C version of CAST-128.

3495
Dr. Stephen Henson6c8abdd1999-01-18 22:18:38 +00003496 *) Changes to the error generation code. The perl script err-code.pl
3497 now reads in the old error codes and retains the old numbers, only
3498 adding new ones if necessary. It also only changes the .err files if new
3499 codes are added. The makefiles have been modified to only insert errors
3500 when needed (to avoid needlessly modifying header files). This is done
3501 by only inserting errors if the .err file is newer than the auto generated
3502 C file. To rebuild all the error codes from scratch (the old behaviour)
3503 either modify crypto/Makefile.ssl to pass the -regen flag to err_code.pl
3504 or delete all the .err files.

Ben Laurie649cdb71999-01-17 16:26:24 +00003507 *) CAST-128 was incorrectly implemented for short keys. The C version has
3508 been fixed, but is untested. The assembler versions are also fixed, but
3509 new assembler HAS NOT BEEN GENERATED FOR WIN32 - the Makefile needs fixing
3510 to regenerate it if needed.

3516
Dr. Stephen Hensonfdd3b641999-01-17 15:10:33 +00003517 *) Beginning of support for GeneralizedTime. d2i, i2d, check and print
3518 functions. Also ASN1_TIME suite which is a CHOICE of UTCTime or
3519 GeneralizedTime. ASN1_TIME is the proper type used in certificates et
3520 al: it's just almost always a UTCTime. Note this patch adds new error
3521 codes so do a "make errors" if there are problems.
3522 [Steve Henson]
3523
Ben Lauriedabba111999-01-17 14:20:20 +00003524 *) Correct Linux 1 recognition in config.

3534
Ben Lauriec3ae9a41999-01-16 18:46:23 +00003535 *) Add prototypes to SSL methods. Make SSL_write's buffer const, at last.
3536 [Ben Laurie]
3537
Dr. Stephen Hensonee13f9b1999-01-14 18:25:07 +00003538 *) Fix the dummy function BN_ref_mod_exp() in rsaref.c to have the correct
3539 parameters. This was causing a warning which killed off the Win32 compile.
3540 [Steve Henson]
3541
Dr. Stephen Henson27eb6221999-01-14 18:21:57 +00003542 *) Remove C++ style comments from crypto/bn/bn_local.h.

3544
Dr. Stephen Henson2d723901999-01-12 18:40:33 +00003545 *) The function OBJ_txt2nid was broken. It was supposed to return a nid
3546 based on a text string, looking up short and long names and finally
3547 "dot" format. The "dot" format stuff didn't work. Added new function
3548 OBJ_txt2obj to do the same but return an ASN1_OBJECT and rewrote
3549 OBJ_txt2nid to use it. OBJ_txt2obj can also return objects even if the
3550 OID is not part of the table.
3551 [Steve Henson]
3552
Ben Lauriea6801a91999-01-10 20:36:02 +00003553 *) Add prototypes to X509 lookup/verify methods, fixing a bug in

3555 [Ben Laurie]
3556
Ben Laurie50acf461999-01-09 19:15:59 +00003557 *) Sort openssl functions by name.

3559
Dr. Stephen Henson7f9b7b01999-01-09 17:29:34 +00003560 *) Get the gendsa program working (hopefully) and add it to app list. Remove

3583 [Ben Laurie]
3584
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00003585 *) Make DH_free() tolerate being passed a NULL pointer (like RSA_free() and

3604 [Ralf S. Engelschall]
3605
Dr. Stephen Hensoncfcf6451999-01-03 01:08:33 +00003606 *) Fix the various library and apps files to free up pkeys obtained from
Dr. Stephen Hensonad65ce71999-01-06 01:39:24 +00003607 X509_PUBKEY_get() et al. Also allow x509.c to handle netscape extensions.

3612 [Steve Henson and Ben Laurie]
3613
Ralf S. Engelschall06d5b161999-01-02 12:59:33 +00003614 *) First cut of a cleanup for apps/. First the `ssleay' program is now named

3622 [Steve Henson]
3623
Dr. Stephen Hensonebc828c1999-01-01 18:43:44 +00003624 *) Add CA.pl, perl version of CA.sh, add extended key usage OID.
3625 [Steve Henson]
3626
Paul C. Sutton79e259e1999-01-01 14:04:07 +00003627 *) Make the top-level INSTALL documentation easier to understand.

3640 [Ben Laurie]
3641
stephen792a9001998-12-31 01:35:07 +00003642 *) Enhanced the err-ins.pl script so it makes the error library number

3653 [Steve Henson]
3654
Ralf S. Engelschallce72df11998-12-30 23:07:32 +00003655 *) Merged the various old/obsolete SSLeay documentation files (doc/xxx.doc)

3660
Ben Laurie4098e891998-12-29 21:43:55 +00003661 *) SETs were incorrectly DER encoded. This was a major pain, because they
